RAKSHA BANDHAN
Tumblr media
India is known as country of festivals. Raksha bandhan is also a very important festival celebrated in India. It is a festival to celebrate the bond between siblings. Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in India in the month of Shravan, also called Sawan, which generally falls on July or August. This year, we will be celebrating Raksha Bandhan on August 2.
In Sanskrit, Raksha Bandhan simply means ‘the bond of protection, obligation, or care’ and thus it signifies the bond between a sister and her brother. To celebrate this bond, a simple ceremony is performed when a sister ties Rakhi on the wrist of her brother as he promises to protect her from all the troubles. Both sisters and brothers then treat each other with gifts and surprises and share affection with each other.
Importance
Raksha Bandhan is not just a festival celebrated as a custom. Rather, this festival is a day to build new relationships with emotions. On this day, sisters not only tie Rakhi to brothers but they also tie Rakhi to those whom they wish to protect. Like in India, there are women in different places who send Rakhi to the heroes (soldiers) of the country and pray for their long life.
HISTORY
There are many mythological stories behind the festival of Raksha Bandhan. One of the most famous stories is from ‘Mahabharata’. It is said that once Lord Krishna was flying kite with Pandavas, Draupadi and Subhadra. Lord Krishna met with a deep cut with Kite’s threat and the wound started bleeding. Draupadi rushed to lord Krishna and tied a piece of cloth on his finger to avoid bleeding. To see the gesture of Draupadi, Lord Krishna promised her that he will always protect her from all the difficulties likewise.
Apart from Hindu mythology, Chittor’s queen Karnavati and Agra’s emperor Humayun's Raksha Bandhan story is highly admirable. It has been said that Raani Karnavati was a widowed queen of Chittor, Rajasthan. Once, she was attacked by the Afghan Sultan from Gujarat. She knew that it won’t be easy for her to win the battle, so she sent a Rakhi to the Mughal emperor. After receiving Rakhi, Humayun went emotional and sent his troops to protect Chittor. This incident added feathers to the festival's significance and also released it from the religious barriers.
Raksha Bandhan Legends
The festival of Raksha Bandhan is mainly celebrated for protection. There are various stories and legends in Hindu Mythology as well as in history, where Gods have tied the rakhi to protect their loved ones for their protection. Here are the stories:
Indra Indrani: This legend tells us that Rakhi is a sacred thread of protection and it cannot only be tied to the brothers for protection, but also to the ones we love. The story of Indra and Indrani takes place in the Vedic period when a battle of the gods and demons took place. Indrani, the companion of Indra, tied a sacred thread on the wrist of her husband for protection against the evil demons.
Krishna and Draupadi: In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna had hurt his finger when he had sent his Sudarshan Chakra from his finger to behead Shishupala. Draupadi then bandaged his finger with a piece of cloth from her saree. Lord Krishna who was moved by her deed promised to protect her from all odds.
Yama Yamuna: In this story, Yama tied a sacred thread on the wrist of her brother Yamuna to protect him from the curse of dead and mutilation from his stepmother, Chhaya. He told his mother that he knew of her secret to which she got furious and gave this curse to him, which was lifted because of the thread.
King Bali and Goddess Laxmi: Goddess Laxmi disguised herself as a Brahmin woman and tied a rakhi to King Bali on the day of Shravan Purnima. She then revealed herself and asked the king to free his companion, Lord Vishnu and let him return to Vaikunth.
Santoshi Maa and Lord Ganesha: This legend is considered to be the reason behind the celebration of Raksha Bandhan. Lord Ganesha had two sons who asked him to bring a sister who would tie rakhi to them. Ganesha then created Santoshi Maa who tied rakhi to his sons.
How do we celebrate Rakhi?
Before raksha bandhan also known as “rakhi”, sisters brings Rakhi for their brother. Rakhi is typically a band which can be tied on wrist. While brother brings their sister a gift. On the day of rakhi, sister first do the Pooja after getting ready and then apply roli and chawal on forehead of her brother and then tie rakhi and in exchange brother promise her to always protect her and gives her a gift.

The most famous story in Indian mythology, Draupadi and Lord Krishna, is 'The wife the five Pandavas'. According to the legend, Krishna accidentally cut his finger while handling sugarcane on Makar Sankranti. Rukmini, his Queen, immediately sent an official to apply bandages. Draupadi was watching and cut off a small portion of her Saree to stop the bleeding. Krishna offered to help her if she needed it. Krishna provided help during Draupadi unceremonious disrobing. Krishna made Draupadi a saree that would never end, saving her embarrassment and giving her protection when she most needed it
Rani Karnavati, Emperor Humayun
Rani Karnavati, Emperor Humayun are two other famous versions of Rakhi's history. After Rana Sanga's death, Karnavati became the official of Mewer. Vikramjeet, her older son, was her ruler. Mewer was attacked by Bahadur Shah, Gujarat for the second consecutive time. He had defeated Vikramjeet earlier. The Queen started looking for support from other kingdoms. Although initially apprehensive at first, the nobles eventually agreed to take on Shah. Karnavati wrote to Humayun in the meantime. She sent him a Rakhi and requested protection. It was interesting to learn that Humayun's father Babur had defeated Rana Sanga in 1527 when he led an amalgamation Rajput armies against Rana Sanga. He abandoned the campaign and turned his attention towards Mewar.
He was unable to make it in time because the Rajput army had been defeated at Chittoor. Bahadur Shah was unable to save the queen from the humiliation of her fall. Shah could not continue and was forced to leave Chittoor when Mughal military reinforcements arrived shortly after. Humayun restored the kingdom to Karnavati son Vikramjeet.
Yama & the Yamuna
Another legend states that Yama, the Lord Of Death, and Yamuna (the river that flows in India), followed the ritual of Raksha bandha. According to the legend, Yama, the Lord of Death granted Yamuna immortality when he tied a Rakhi to Yama. He was so moved by the gesture that he declared that any brother who tied a Rakhi to Yama would be granted immortality.
The Birth and Death of Santoshi Maa
This version of the festival of rakhi refers to the Santoshi Maa birth. Lord Ganesha's sister Manasa visits him on an auspicious day to tie him a rakhi. After seeing this, Ganesha's children insist on getting a sister. Ganesha’s gives in to his demands and creates goddess Santoshi using the divine flames said to have come from his consorts Siddhi, Riddhi, and Siddhi.
Roxana, King Porus
Another legend states that Alexander the Great invaded India 326 BC. Roxana, Roxana's wife, sent Porus a sacred thread, and requested him not to hurt her husband on the battlefield. Alexander refuses to be killed after he honors his request. Porus would eventually lose the Battle of the Hydaspes, but Alexander would earn his respect and honor. Porus would eventually become a loyal Macedonian satrap after his death.

After the Katha is over and the Aarti is done, sprinkle the water of the Kalash everywhere in the house and water the remaining water in the Tulsi bed. The Deity
Almost all the womenfolk in our industrial township were homemakers. A very few worked as teachers, nurses, doctors. The homemakers would mostly remain engaged all day in their household chores. In their free time, they would catch up with the other women in the neighborhood. Occasionally, they exchanged new recipes or some special traditional dish. In winter, they also exchanged designs for woolens and knitwear. Kitty parties or all-women hangouts were not so much in vogue until the movie Jai Santoshi Maa became a big hit.  The so-far lesser-known, presumably powerful deity found fame and luck through Bollywood. She quickly found many followers among the womenfolk in the township. In fact, she brought a purpose to their otherwise routine lives.  It also gave them the opportunity to invite each other and enjoy a small get together of sorts. The like, share, subscription multiplied through little booklets exchanging hands, containing the deity’s story. The new followers would submit their Wishlist to the deity for her blessings. It required them to worship her for 16-consecutive Fridays. This was the least standard timeline. The number of Fridays varied beyond the least according to the importance or urgency of the wishes of the devotees. The Wishlist would have a wide-spectrum interest. Husbands’ promotion or ‘Phoren (foreign) tour for work, son’s admission in IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), and daughter’s marriage to a fresh GET (Graduate Engineer Trainee) in the company or a Green Card Holder in the USA, topped the list.
The devotees and their family members abstained from eating any sour food on Fridays when they did the puja. It was the primary condition to please the deity. Supposedly, it ensured 100% effectiveness of the puja.
Despite being reminded by my mom several times, I would always end up eating something containing citric acid on those very Fridays when she kept her vow to Santoshi Mata. I felt a little guilty and scared too for possibly spoiling my mom’s chances of receiving her quota of the very coveted blessings and boon from the deity.

I also failed at the second most important step in pleasing the deity.  After completing the puja, my mom would assign me the task of finding out a stray cow around our house and offer her the first morsel of the ‘prasad’. Invariably, all the local, friendly, stray cows would decide to play hide and seek with me.  If I managed to find one, she would not be a timid, sober and shy type. She would always be a mischievous one. She would shake her head vigorously, pointing her horns towards me as I tried to approach her. I would find  in her another sinful, non-believer like me. She was also dumb to not understand that I had a tasty snack of soaked Bengal gram and pieces of jaggery to offer her. I had no option but to commit another sin. I would throw the packet of prasad towards her from a safe distance. My gesture would not have any trace of reverence to the Deity or the holy creature and then I would run for my life.

Once on such a Friday, a man accompanied by a little girl knocked at our door in the morning. He said he was hungry and was forced to beg for food as he had lost everything in a devastating flood in his village. He didn’t look like a beggar. Yet, he looked distressed, and poverty-stricken. My mother asked him to come in the afternoon for lunch. He promised to return after a few hours and went away. Later, my mom noticed he had written the words, “Meal room” on our door and on the staircase wall of our building with a piece of charcoal in Bengali. He did it to identify our house among the similar-looking row of buildings. But it was so heart touching. Getting one time’s meal was so crucial for them.  When they came back, my mother fed them well, with a lot of care and respect. The satisfaction and joy on their face were unmissable having such a sumptuous, full meal. They didn’t even thank my mom. But my mother was so happy to see them satiated. She believed Santoshi Maa had sent them to have her prasad from her hand. My mother was happy for getting a chance to serve needy people. Not only on this occasion, on other occasions too, her devotion and generosity left an indelible impression on my heart.

I am still a non-believer. I don’t know if Santoshi Maa still enjoys the same kind of popularity or not. But I find it so sweet of my mother and other women of her time worshipping the deity. They  observed fast on the Fridays. They cooked, served and ate a non-sour, vegetarian meal, fed young children. They prayed for the well-being and prosperity of their loved ones and their families. The simplicity of their faith, their love and affection for their family mellow the harsh edges of my non-believing, critical mind.  I bow down my head to the deity in a mother’s heart, to the God in all mothers’ and women's hearts.

In &TV’sBhabijiGhar Par Hai, Vibhuti Narayan Mishra (Aasif Sheikh) will be seen in yet another interesting avatar, which is an electrician and that he is in a tricky situation. What exactly is this situation and how Vibhuti will find a solution? Coming to &TV’sAur Bhai Kya ChalRaha Hai? the Mishras and Mirzas have a shocking situation with a half-dead body! Billu Bahubali (Satyam Shukla) comes visiting the Mishra and Mirza’s haveli. But he slips and falls unconscious on the floor causing a commotion in the haveli. Talking about the Happu Ki Ultan Paltan track, Yogesh Tripathi aka DarogaHappu Singh says, “I feel there is nothing stronger and motivating than ‘Maa kiKasam’. When we were shooting this sequence, it reminded me of my childhood where my mom used to make me swear on her to not repeat any mischief that I used to do as a kid, till date I haven’t repeated the same. But coming to Happu, when he starts speaking the truth, people around him could not bear it and wish that he never swore on Amma. The audience are going to have a good dose of laughter watching Happu struggling between keeping the promise and not hurting people’s emotions.” On the BhabijiGhar Par Hai track, Aasif Sheikh aka Vibhuti Narayan Mishra shares, “With every new story, my excitement just levels up, as I am always curious to see what Vibhuti is going be next. I really love how he blends into any character, which makes it a challenging yet a fun role to portray. I had a lot of fun acting like an electrician and moving with a toolbox. But with every new thing that Vibhuti tries, a new set of hurdle comes his way. It will be really interesting to see how he is going to deal with it the Vibhuti way.” On the Aur Bhai Kya ChalRaha Hai? track,Pawan Singh aka Zafar Ali Mirza shares, “Imagine a half-dead man lying in your room and you don’t know how to hide him or wake him up and his wife threatening to call the police! The situation looks out of hand, but Mishras and Mirzas are not the families that give up so easy. They go through all the ups and downs and somehow manage. But will they be able to manage to not get arrested?” Speaking about Santoshi Maa SunayeVratKathayeintrack, Tanvi Dogra aka Swati shares, “The story takes a wild turn as new mysteries unfold in the show. The mishappenings around the resort create a situation of panic and fear in Swati and her family, and she is seen paying to Santoshi Maa for the safety and well-being of her family members. With so murders and fights continuing in the hotel, will things return back to normalcy?.”

I grew up listening to the brave encounters and stories that he narrated when we would curiously ask him about his work. Ever since my childhood I have seen him respecting his uniform and the passion with which he works for the betterment of the nation. In the current lockdown scenario, while me and my mother are stuck in Mumbai, my father and brother are in Delhi. As much as this saddens me to see me father fight every single day and night with the horrifying pandemic, it does make feel proud of him. Even though there is a constant fear that he might get infected, we are satisfied that he is doing a noble deed.”
With growing scare of the pandemic amongst people there still exists a few who deny abiding by the rules and regulations set by the government. Urging the audience to stay back at home Ashish shares, “Adhering to lockdown norms and staying at home is the need of the hour. Our frontline warriors are fighting every day to protect us from the hazardous pandemic so that we stay safe. The rules are made for our own benefit and we all must follow it.”

Just going to link this here for easy reference, but this is a good movie and I definitely recommend it; Jai Santoshi Maa follows the story of Satyavati, a newly married woman whose devotion to the goddess Santoshi is tested when discord is sown among her husband and her in-laws. Not the greatest copy, but still watchable. Subtitled, of course.
