Picture a jolly Santa, donning a red Hawaiian shirt and shorts instead of his usual winter attire, tending to a large smoker filled with juicy brisket. His white beard might be slightly tinged with barbecue sauce, and instead of milk and cookies, he's sampling different BBQ rubs and sauces.
This concept could inspire summer gatherings, blending the joy of Christmas with the relaxed atmosphere of a July cookout. It might feature decorations like tinsel-wrapped smokers, barbecue tool ornaments, or stockings filled with grilling accessories.

Poly Pack Future Careers
( This AU takes place after Beasts of Santa Carla fanfic series)
David in the early 2000's invested in an old western themed whiskey business that he liked and now has shares in it while not having to work a day in his life.
Tumblr media
Dwayne sometimes bartends/ bouncers at Chateau Vermillion when he gets bored though his main focus is taking care of Laddie while he goes through teenage vampirism with his slow ageing pills he is required to take by the vampiric council.
Tumblr media
Paul started cultivating his own strain of weed back in the 90s in him and Stars smoker room in the new house. He sold his strain for a long time but his business didn't take off until legalization. Celebrities will pay top dollar just to get an ounce of his strain Fanging Flower.
Tumblr media
Marko has sold his art for ages and dipped into learning many different art styles but in the 2000's he really got into tattooing non humans and humans alike. David got him a tattoo gun one Christmas and Marko would spend his time using Paul as a guinea pig canvas ever since. Paul only kept the ones he thought were the best. Was a hard thing to explain when Dwayne caught Marko giving Paul a tongue piercing in the basement bathroom in the stoner room.
Tumblr media
Star got into learning witch craft and magic after becoming a Day walker. She works at the witch shop in town during the day as she enjoys the time away from the pack. David is happy she brings him good smelling incense from time to time.
Tumblr media
Micheal works at a mechanic shop in town with the lycanthropes as he formed a close bond with a lot of them. He specializes in motorcycles and enjoys customizing rides. The whole pack thinks it's attractive when he comes home smelling like motor oil and gasoline.
Tumblr media
Bonus:
(Y/n) took over Chateau Vermillion and is now on the Santa Carla inhuman committee as a representative for the vampires and succubi kind. She still participates in the fight club to this day even if the pack gets worried about her after she starts having kids. Nothing like Star and Dwayne having to take turns watching over a heavily pregnant hybrid as she tries to go fighting when no one's looking.

(tw warning, alcohol and cigarettes mention)
hey, it’s your secret santa, back again and feeling the pressure! Can you believe it’s nearly December? I hope your own gift is going well. Anyway, just a quick question for you this time - are slightly more adult themes okay with you? I know you wanted some kissing and cuddling (it’s all very fluffy, don’t worry), but I wasn’t sure if you were okay with some swearing here and there. It is a fluffy fic after all! Also, there are currently mentions of alcohol and cigarettes. Nothing extreme, but it is there so if that’s a trigger for you please let me know, I want to make sure your gift is as fluffy and perfect as possible! Be good, and I’ll see you soon!! ≧ ◡ ≦
Your dedication is sending me 🥺
December is around the corner here! (Still 20 minutes to get there 😏) Can’t wait!
Listen, listen, listen… I know smoking is bad and so is alcohol abuse but andkdf I’m the first one to write Dabi as a smoker and throwing alcohol in my own fics for additional fun so I have absolutely no problem with that 😂
HHHH It will be awesome, I can feel it! :3 🔥☺️
(I’m very curious to know more about the great human hiding behind their Santa role now 🙈)

Get Creative with Unique Weed Pipes
Smoking weed recreationally can be a really fun experience, whether that’s why friends or even by yourself. Some smokers tend to enjoy it in some ritualistic way, making it an entire experience for themselves during the process. Other smokers may just do it casually whenever they feel the need to relax or relieve some stress after a long day. No matter how you like to enjoy your smoking experience, there’s always room for change and/or improvement.
There are many ways to improve your entire smoking experience that doesn’t involve changing out the type or strain of dry herb that you smoke. You can do all sorts of things to get creative with your smoking routine. One of the best ways to do that would be to switch up what you smoke with.

Rainy Afternoon with HYUKOH
Tumblr media
It was one of the chilliest days in November when we waited for the South Korean quartet. The rain reluctantly wetted Kemang road; creating a lazy rhythm to our ears as we look out from inside JUNI Records’ homey headquarter. It was a perfect timing for middle-class, young urban to think about coffee—I did too. And funnily enough, HYUKOH was thinking about the same thing too.
15 minutes before they arrived, they came up the idea of coffee, requesting five cups of Americano to indulge here. I was just about to volunteer and get them coffee from the nearest Warkop - perhaps to get some Indomie Ayam Bawang as well. Ain’t nobody would miss the chance to witness them caressing one of the best foods in our only known universe.
The four of them seemed to be really quiet in the first impression. They even entered the room with no slightest sound. If it wasn’t Oh Hyuk who rushed to ask where the toilet was, they could’ve won Santa Claus of the Year award for their sneaking prowess.
Dressed in their consistent wardrobe—coats and trousers 4 size bigger than their actual figure—they greeted us in formal way and sat on the seats prepared for them about 6-feet opposite to us. I sat exactly in front of them, right in the middle. Wasn’t a perfect spot either, because I look better with my face slightly facing the left side than facing the front.
Tumblr media
So here they are: Im Dong Gun, Lee In Woo, Oh Hyuk, and Lim Hyun Jae—from left to right. We were given the chance to ask one question each, which we already rehearsed to each other. It was quite useless, though, since each of us already prepared at least a dozen questions—enough of a stock in case our intended question had already been asked.
Here’s the transcript of the ludicrous talk with the band earlier before the concert took place (DG=Dong Gun, IW=In Woo, OH=Oh Hyuk, HJ=Hyun Jae):
What can we expect from the concert at The Establishment tomorrow?
OH: We will certainly be playing all songs from (our latest album) 23. As for the others, let’s just see what we prepared for you.
We’ve known that you paid close attention to fashion; mostly for Oh Hyuk who has posed for certain magazines like Vogue, DAZED, and worked with brands like Nike. What is the fashion statement and where do you get the inspiration from?
OH: Each of us actually has different fashion taste, so it’s hard to exactly explain our fashion statement. As for our latest album, we talked to our team (including the stylist) and have decided to go on oversized outfits that just seem to fit the overall theme.
You guys have different musical background. How do you stay on the same page when it comes to music-making process?
OH: True, we have very diverse music taste, as well as influences. Our influences change over time, but there are few who stay as our main influence (in other interview, he said the major influences include Whitest Boy Alive and The Beatles, but I didn’t scrutinize every word from Oh Hyuk during our interview). I think that difference does not separate us from one music element from another—instead it gives us a chance to make our music sounds even more diverse.
We cannot ignore that you have reached mainstream music scene lately. How does that impact your music?
OH: First of all, I’m pretty glad to enter the mainstream market because it makes a lot of money *laughed awkwardly*. However, yes, sometimes I’m anxious if someday it (the mainstream market) may alter our musical identity. But so far we are still enjoying it.
Tumblr media
Since it’s raining outside, what song from your own discography you would recommend to listen to on rainy days?
OH: Paul.
HJ: Paul.
IW: *one-minute pause* Paul.
DG: *three-minute pause that feels like forever* TOMBOY.
What is the philosophy behind your orderly album titles?
OH: The numbers mean our chronological ages by the time we are working on the album, so we can remember how old we were when we produced it. 20 when we were 20, and so on with 22 and 23. As for 21… There isn’t any just because… There just isn’t.
You are currently nominated for major awards like MAMA and MMA. What do you feel about it and how’s your preparation for the show?
OH: We are happy to get our first nomination ever at MAMA. As for the performance… Please just stay tune for the surprise.
Jakarta is your last destination for the World Tour before you return to South Korea. Do you have any expectation about it?
OH: We just expect no more flight *jokingly*. Since it’s our first ever live performance in Jakarta, we just have to make sure to perform our best.
What is the meaning behind your consistently artistic album artwork?
OH: To be honest, I don’t even know myself. There’s no actual interpretation about these. The man behind the artwork was my sunbae (senior) during school days. I just found his artwork very interesting and told him, “If someday I’m gonna make an album, I want you to illustrate the cover”. We just give him the tracklist to listen and let him illustrate it based on his own interpretation about the overall music.
What’s your favorite track from the latest album?
DG: TOMBOY. I think it has a really good melody—it rings a lot in my head.
IW:  Die Alone. It’s the song that helps me to concentrate during a performance.
OH: I would say TOMBOY. The song took the longest process to produce, so I remembered every detail of it very well.
HJ: I have two favorites: TOMBOY and 지정석 (Reserved Seat). I like them because the outcome somehow fits how I expect them to be.
What can we expect from HYUKOH in the future?
OH: We have a motto that goes “Everything that is done with pleasure is cool”. In the future, we would like to present our music that is always done with pleasure for our listeners.
Tumblr media
As the roundtable session ended, four of them grabbed their coffee and went straightly to the porch to light some cigarettes. As the smoke resembled fog amidst the rain, the oversized coats they wore made them looking like spectres from behind. Despite the grim combination of coffee, their serious-yet-witty look, and the overwhelming smoke, I still can’t deny I wanted so badly to join them and offer a pack of local wisdom called Gudang Garam Signature. There’s a chance they would suspect me as suicidal for smoking such high dose of nicotine though, but come on—you cannot be a smoker and wandering in Jakarta without tasting a kretek once.

Ah...off to the dentist again. Bus to the East Side.  Walk north on Madison.  Weather cool...not the stinging cold I anticipated. (There is actually a clothing store called Acne?)
In the fancy chair...a kind of bare bones view out the window...Pandora is playing jazz.  Coltrane.  I think of the catcher, Russell Martin, whose middle name is Coltrane...I think of Deval Patrick, former governor of Massachusetts who has thrown his hat into the presidential ring, whose father was Pat Patrick, the saxophonist in Sun Ra's band.  And of Maynard Jackson, mayor of Atlanta, who at a local jazz fest was mistaken for saxist (Willis) Gator Tail Jackson...
There is the requisite numbing, scraping and such.  When I am released, realizing I have nothing much to eat at home, I stop by a deli-grocery on Madison Avenue.  As I thought, every item is twice as expensive as on the West Side.
Home.  TV. More impeachment "inquiry."  I can't imagine that anything will come of this. But I keep watching.
Another school shooting.  This time in Santa Clarita, California.  OMG.
Friday, November 15, 2019
Ms. Yavankovitch, the ousted Ukrainian ambassador, shows up to give testimony.  You think: they wouldn't bully a woman, would they?  They certainly would.  They have at her.  But she keeps her composure.  Can't watch too much of this...it goes on for hours.  Ms. Yavankovitch is applauded when she exits the room.
Evening:
Carnegie Hall.  The Chicago Symphony under Muti.  Packed house.  They open with Bizet's "Roma."  New to me. The work of a very young Bizet, bringing to my mind another rarely heard work with a similar theme, "Aus Italien," by a quite young Richard Strauss.
Odd thing about Bizet.  His are all the works of a young man.  He died at thirty-six.  It is said he was a keen smoker.
"Roma" a beautiful piece not much performed.  The sound of Muti's score pages being turned.
A Berlioz piece follows.  I so admire the composer's vision but haven't gotten much from his vocal music. "The Death of Cleopatra."  Quite dramatic.  She dies. Oh, it does go on and on...  Ms. DiDonato, a mezzo of great gifts does the piece "on book," or, rather, on iPad.  Huge response.
The main event comes after intermission.  "The Pines of Rome."  Mussolini's favorite work.  But Respighi, escaping the fate of some contemporary German composers remained apolitical.  He was never tarred with the Fascist brush. It is a great story...Respighi's having to wear a uniform when given a prize (he did this out of loyalty to other Italian composers...intervened when Toscanini was being attacked by a mob.  What a story. Would make a great movie, but perhaps there already is one.

The home run has always been the glamour hit
The history of field hockey may date back to 4,000 years ago, when ancient Egyptians played a similar game with a small ball and a long stick nfl jerseys. The modern game of field hockey took shape in England in the late 18th century. It was introduced to the United States in 1901 by an English physical education teacher named Constance Applebee.

You can maintain this percentage fairly easily, and it can boost your health, reducing your risk for metabolic disturbances and heart disease. You may need to exercise more than the minimum recommended by the CDC, however, and focus on lifestyle choices such as limiting stress and getting a fair amount of sleep.  wholesale jerseys

This was a big year for food and booze in Denver. From esteemed chefs pouring in from all corners of the country to open new and exciting restaurants to fresh bar concepts, distilleries, breweries and coffee shops — 2018 was a year of dining and drinking expansion, to say the least. Some of the new additions are even gaining national attention from big names Bon Appétit. Now, as 2018 comes to a close, we loosen our belts, look to the future and prepare for yet another momentous year of eating and drinking in Denver.
Stay tuned — we will update this as more information arises.
Leevers Locavore
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Where: 2630 W. 38th Ave., Denver
Estimated opening: Spring 2019
The Lowdown: Taking over the old Save-A-Lot store on 38th, this new market will bring a Leevers gourmet grocery to the area with help from restaurateurs Jeff Osaka and Justin Brunson. Osaka is likely to bring a hybrid of some of his best concepts (think ramen, sushi, rice bowls and wraps) whereas Brunson is likely to spearhead the butchery. On the shelves, the grocer plans to bring in mostly local, natural and organic ingredients for shoppers to peruse.
 Broadway Market
Where: 950 Broadway., Denver
Estimated opening: January 2019
The Lowdown: Broadway Market has been on everyone’s radar since it was first announced in March. And the team behind this highly-anticipated space has brought on big names like Pizzeria Coperta, an Ottoman-inspired spot by chef Daniel Asher, an outpost of Biju’s — and more. They still have plenty of space to fill in the market and construction is underway for the new food hall. Currently, it is set to finish in December with an expected January opening. Check back here to follow our updates.
Little Man Factory
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Where: 4411 W. Colfax Ave., Denver
Estimated Opening: Summer 2019
The Lowdown: Little Man has grown to be a sweet staple of the Denver community. And the new Little Man factory (originally slated to open in 2018) will triple the company’s ice cream production. The company plans to make the factory its flagship location in the Sloan’s Lake neighborhood. Modeled off the interior of an industrial ice cream churn, the new spot will also have a “Willy Wonka” type tasting room, including a conveyor belt that’ll transport ice cream and goodies overhead. From scoops to pints, ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, malts, ice cream flights and new baked goods — this new Little Man location is going bigger than ever here in the Mile High City.
  Denver Street Eats

Where: Denver International Airport, Great Hall
Estimated opening: Summer 2019
The Lowdown: As a part of the renovation of the Great Hall at Denver International Airport, Denver Street Eats will mirror its concept off the bustling restaurant scene in RiNo by bringing in local chefs from the area. Currently, Jeff Osaka, known for his sushi and ramen joints in RiNo, will open Osaka Kitchen whereas Biju Thomas, known for his famous fast-casual Indian food, will bring something of his own.
Golden Mill Market
Rendering courtesy of Golden Mill.
Where: 1012 Ford Street, Golden
Estimated Opening: End of 2019
The Lowdown: Located in the historic Golden Mill, the 150-year-old building will be transformed into a bustling food hall. Featuring a coffee shop, a central bar, several food vendors, event space, and a flexible community gathering area, the project was spearheaded by Golden residents, who bought the space after they were concerned it might become condos. The forthcoming market will be two buildings totaling in 6,000 square feet. The original Mill building will remain intact and an additional 1,500 square feet added to the warehouse building next door.
Tributary Market & Drinkery
Photo courtesy of Tributary Market & Drinkery on Facebook
Where: 1012 Ford Street, Golden
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: Yet another food hall is set to open in Golden. This one, however, comes from chef Daniel Asher and restaurateur Josh Dinar (the two are also behind the Ottoman concept coming to Broadway Market). For their own spot, there will be eight food vendors and drink stalls totaling out at 3,000-square-feet. According to Denver Eater,  Kona Bowls, Woodgrain Bagels, Generous Coffee and a sandwich shop by the chef at Denver’s Brider are all signed on. According to Asher, the new market is still on track to open in early 2019.
Brass Tacks
Rendering courtesy of Consume & Create.
Where: 1526 Blake Street., Denver
Estimated opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: Brass Tacks is opening inside the historic building that formerly housed Blake Street Vault. Led by husband and wife duo Katsumi Yuso Ruiz and Stephen Julia, the aim of this new space is to offer the same high-quality cocktails as their other bar— Denver Central Market’s Curio Bar — but at affordable prices and in an unpretentious environment. They wanted that same approachability to run throughout the entire project and brought on chef Zach Spott to roll out food menu for all types of diners.  From lunchtime sandwiches and salads to happy hour bar snacks and ‘shareables’ for dinner, chef Spott is aiming to keep the bites as approachable and casual as bar manager Stuart Jensen’s beverage program.
Owlbear BBQ
Where: 2826 Larimer St., Denver
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: After a long and tumultuous delay, the beloved BBQ spot Owlbear is back.  According to owner and pitmaster Karl Fallenius, the RiNo spot is aiming for early 2019. He said they will return with old favorites (like the fatty brisket and succulent pulled pork) as well as new specials, vegan-friendly options as well as housemade BBQ sauce. And while we’re looking forward to all the tasty meats, we can’t wait to see what vegan delights he pulls from his smoker.
Cart Driver LoHi
Where: 2239 West 30th Ave., Denver
Estimated Opening: TBA
The Lowdown:Cart-Driver has been rocking rustic Italian street fare since opening in RiNo four years ago. Now, this local favorite its spreading its wings and heading to LoHi. In 2019 the eatery will open a second location in the former home of Z Cuisine. Outside of expanding the wine program, the new Cart Driven will stay true to its original style, with classics like wood-fired pizza, oysters and small plates from head chef Andrew Van Stee.
  Edgewater Public Market
Rendering courtesy of Meridian 105 and Edgewater Echo.
Where: 1725 Sheridan Blvd, Edgewater
Estimated Opening: Summer 2019
The Lowdown: Going into the vacant King Soopers west of Sloan’s Lake, this new food hall is slated to open in the summer of 2019. In addition to talk of a yoga studio, Cross Fit gym and natural pet retailer, this space is looking to add multiple restaurants to the roster.
So Radish
Scott Spears and So Radish.
Where: 5711 Olde Wadsworth Blvd, Arvada.
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: From barbeque to steak, Denver meat eaters will be in good hands in 2019. And now, so will Denver vegans. So Radish, slated to open in the old diner that most recently housed Ophelia’s Restaurant, is coming to the Mile High City in 2019 with dishes like a lettuce wrap filled with Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, jalapeños, cucumber and pickled radish, a mac and cheese recipe made from cashew cream and even a southern-style “pulled” jackfruit barbecue sandwich. Essentially, carnivores, omnivores and vegans alike can look forward to this new spot opening in the new year.
Middlestate Coffee
Where: 212 Santa Fe Drive, Denver
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: Since 2016, MiddleState Coffee has been operating out of a small space on 17 East Fourth Avenue. And now, owner/roaster Jay DeRose is expanding into new realms. The new space is a 3,000 square foot warehouse at 212 Santa Fe Drive, and the cafe portion is expected to open in early 2019.
Run for the Roses
Photo courtesy of Run for The Roses on Facebook.
Where: 1801 Blake St., Suite 10, Denver
Estimated Opening: February 2019
The Lowdown: This swanky LoDo addition comes from Steven Waters — formerly of Black Eye Coffee / White Lies. Originally scheduled to debut in the first quarter of 2018, it is now predicted to open in early 2019 and will occupy a former Irish bar on Blake Street in the new Dairy Block development. Though Run for the Roses will feature classic Derby-style drinks, this bar is not claiming to be a Kentucky Derby theme nor a speakeasy — rather playing on the iconic atmosphere of luck, superstition and fun that surrounds the race track. Offshoots of classics like an Alaskan will be the highlight of Water’s newest venture, joined by well-known concoctions such as the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. Specialty cocktails featuring high-end spirits will also be available on a separate menu as well as drinks made with spirits you may not know of or are not as accessible in Denver.
  Blue Sparrow
Where: 1615 Platte St., Denver
Estimated Opening: Summer 2019
The Lowdown: In April of 2017, Blue Sparrow Coffee opened its first location in RiNo. Since, the small space has gained attention across the city as a beloved craft coffee cafe and one of Denver’s only providers of ready-to-drink CBD coffee, among its many other memorable offerings. And now, its expanding. The petite 470-square foot cafe will open a second location, offering the same unique fare that its first location  — with the addition of some awesome upgrades. The new cafe is slated to open by the summer of 2019.
Sushi-Rama
Where: 13650 East Colfax Avenue, Aurora 80011
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: Originally from LA, chef and owner Jeff Osaka arrived in Denver in 2008 with the intent of opening a downtown concept. He has since expanded to multiple venues — Osaka Ramen, Tammen’s Fish Market, 12 @ Madison and soon to be five Sushi Ramas. The fifth location is expected to open in early 2019.
LeRoux – Opened
Where: 1555 Blake St., Suite 102, Denver
Estimated Opening: Opened December 26
The Lowdown: Originally expected to open in the summer of 2018, LeRoux just opened with a menu packed with the flavors of France, Germany, Italy and Spain to Denver. The new spot is the fifth concept by ChoLon Restuarant Concepts and with unique plays on dishes like scallops, tartines and escargot, it brings classics from some of Europes most beloved countries.
Cho77
Red chili pork dumplings at Cho77. Photo by Glenn Ross
Where: 16th and Blake St., Denver
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown: Formerly located on South Broadway, Cho77 was known for dishing out twists on Asian street food (like their famous Cheeseburger shumai). Now the fusion hotspot is moving downtown to be next to its sister restaurant, ChoLon and its newest addition — LeRoux. With the move, Cho77 is adding breakfast and lunch with the rumor that breakfast dumplings are on the menu. We’re already sold.
Voodoo Doughnuts
Photography by Caitlin Savage
Where: 98 South Broadway, Denver
Estimated Opening: TBA
The Lowdown: This summer it was announced that beloved Famous Pizza would close on the corner of Ellsworth and South Broadway after 40 years. The iconic joint’s closure was a blow to the many people who loved the spot for a casual slice. In their place, Voodoo Doughnuts will take over the South Broadway haunt for their second Denver location. Still no word on exactly when they’ll start slinging doughnuts, but we’re glad the popular spot isn’t becoming apartments or someting equally as lame.
The Constellation Ice Cream
Photo courtesy of Little Man Ice Cream.
Where: 10175 East 29th Dr., Denver, Colorado
Estimated Opening: TBA
The Lowdown: Originally slated to open in early 2018, this project is nearly a year behind schedule and the anticipation is greater than ever. The Constellation Ice Cream will pay homage to Stapleton’s deep history in aviation. It is named after The Lockheed Constellation — a mid-20th-century passenger aircraft. To fully embrace this historic space, a 75 foot-long replica of an aircraft wing will top the ice cream kiosk. Underneath the wing will be a 354-square foot walk-up kiosk and outdoor patio seating with a fire pit and heat lamps. In addition, the space will serve the same scratch-made ice cream and sorbet that we’ve come to know and love from Little Man.
Masa
Photo courtesy of Masa via Facebook
Where: Arista Broomfield Community
Estimated Opening: Early 2019
The Lowdown:  Masa, a Kevin Taylor Restuarant Group concept, will serve contemporary fare rooted in the traditional flavors of Mexico to Broomfield. Located near the restaurant group’s other restaurant, Hickory & Ash, the team behind this new space is looking forward to providing tradition and flavor to Broomfield. With dishes like tacos al pastor, pork shoulder molcajete, Oaxacan chile rellenos and tilapia Veracruz — this menu may be worth the commute. In addition to the cuisine, the bar will have a classic Mexican focus with agave spirits, more than 30 tequilas and mezcal, craft margaritas, Palomas as well as Mexican beer and wine. Essentially, if you’re craving something south of the border, Masa plans on having it.
Maine Shack
Lobster Roll. Photo by Alden Bonecutter.
Where: 1535 Central St., Denver
Estimated Opening: Spring 2019
The Lowdown: Max Mackissock, Katie O’Shea and Juan Padro — who are three of the minds behind favorites like Señor Bear, Bar Dough and Morin, are partnering with Drew Ryan, producer at MoBoogie and John Caprio, general manager of Fiddler’s Green Amphitheater, to open Maine Shack. The space will focus on coastal dishes from lobster rolls to fried clams and roast beef sandwiches. And it’s even planning to serve beer and wine — something that we can all appreciate. The kitchen will be led by New England native Craig Dixon, a long-time Boston dweller and seafood wiz. Dixon spent years working at his family’s roast beef and clam shack before working at Vita, Honor Society and Bar Dough. And now, it’s announced two new openings in 2019. The second Choice Market location is set to open on the ground floor of the new Denver Housing Authority headquarters at the 10th and Osage light rail stop in Mariposa — and is slated to open in June of 2019. The third, will open on the site of a former restaurant on Colfax and is scheduled to open in October of 2019. Expect goods from local favorites like Rosenberg’s Bagels, Corvus Coffee, Maria Empanada, Tender Belly and The Real Dill to stock the shelves.

Second Chance
by Don Hall
I wrote and performed this piece for the third of Scott Whitehair’s Liars Contests. The second was notable because I met DMJ that night. Given the nature of my take on the theme of Second Chances it seemed apropos.
Second Chance
I believe in second chances.
The second time around, I became completely engrossed by comic books.  Superman.  The Incredible Hulk.  The X-Men.  People with super powers.  I understood Batman but he was just a wealthy sociopath so I really didn’t feel that sense of connection.
Spiderman?  Spiderman was my jam.  Given powers he didn’t ask for and a simple agenda: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.  I learned a bunch of stuff from reading Spiderman.  To experiment with my powers in private.  To figure out ways to use science to enhance them.  And to keep a secret identity.
Like Peter Parker, I quickly figured out that not only could I levitate above my bathtub (a fact that drove my mom crazy because she simply could get me to bathe without just spraying me with a hose) but that, if I concentrated, I could almost fly.  “Almost” because levitation doesn’t include propulsion.  At least not in my case.  I "never needed an elevator but I still needed a cab" kind of thing.
What I learned from the X-Men was that powers could be the kind of burden that turned everyone else against you.  I should've already known that.  That people love the idea of a person with super powers but would react with fear and hatred if someone actually had them.  So when I discovered my advanced healing ability - like Wolverine but with the power to sort of transfer it to other people as well - I only used it on mom when she had a cold and that one time when she found a lump in her breast.  She got a little freaked out when I spent all day trying to fix my dog Lazy after he got hit by a car when I was twelve.  I fixed him but it was more like “Pet Semetary" and he was super weird after that.  I didn’t do that again.
The food thing was cool but kind of useless except for when mom couldn’t afford to go to the grocery store.  We both thought I was making food appear like a Star Trek replicator but what was really happening was that I was telekinetically transporting food from other places to our house.  That felt like stealing so I quit that, too.
After college, I decided to experiment with being a super hero.  I wore a ski mask and roamed around our tiny town looking for wrongs to right but I wasn’t strong like Superman and my powers weren’t really very good at stopping thieves or violent crimes.  I remember the night I decided to hang that idea up.  I caught three guys breaking into a liquor store and I challenged them.  As soon as they turned on me, I realized I wasn’t really equipped to deal with these guys.  They ended beating the crap out of me - one guy hit me with an electrical cord, like, forty times.  So I ended up ditching the mask and just decided to become a teacher.  I’d moonlight as a bartender because serving booze and talking to people seemed to be a good fit.
On my 33rd birthday, after hiding among the people and jobs, I realized that I wasn’t a mutant or a super hero.  I wasn’t a part of a team. There was no one else on the entire planet with powers and life wasn’t a comic book.  So I embraced my secret identity - Don Hall, average big-mouth white guy - and did my best to pretend I was normal.  Just like everybody else.
As I approached fifty, I realized that middle-age isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.  The live hard, die young thing had worked for James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Jimi Hendrix so they never had to deal with dry feet, ear hair or having to pee every seven minutes.  I also started remembering things.  Things from a different time.  It was all triggered by Rankin and Bass one Christmas.
I figured out what I was.  At first, I thought I was Santa Claus but the powers didn't fit.  And I don't look good in red.  I wasn't Santa Claus.
I was your second chance.
This time, though, I had you to teach me.  You took my words and completely fucked them up.  I NEVER said ANYTHING about gays.  Not once.  I was seriously anti-capitalist and you started a fucking system based entirely upon it as a bedrock philosophy.  I never slutshamed - remember the “He who is without sin” thing?  For fuck’s sake, it couldn’t be simpler!
I have lived among you for fifty years now in secret.  I can tell you people because - well, this is a liar’s contest and who’s gonna believe you anyway?  I have lived among you and watched how you ignore the basic human kindnesses and twist faith into intolerance.  For monetary gain and convenience, you’ve slowly taken the most unique creation in the universe and treated it the way an aging smoker treats his lungs.  More food than you can eat and millions starving in famine.  It’s too bad my pops promised not to raze the place again because it’s all ending and cutting your head off with a cleaver is faster and less painful that cutting it off with a butter knife.
I believe in second chances.  But not this time.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Alice Liddell’s father was the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford, she was one of ten children that grew up on the Christ Church campus in the mid-19th century. Charles Dodgson was a mathematician in Oxford and an amateur photographer, Dodgson met the Liddell family while photographing the Cathedral in 1856, and came to know the family well. He used to take Alice and some of her siblings on boating trips during which he would tell them fantastical stories, Alice was always taken by his stories, and would quickly become the protagonist in many of them. Their relationship developed so quickly and they became so close that many people began to grow concerned, and one such afternoon while on a train something happened between the two of them that forced the hand of the Dean and others in the community, Dodgson was no longer allowed to see Alice, Charles Dodgson was 29 and Alice was only 11, at the time. Alice grew up to marry a professional cricket player and the couple bore three sons, and yet the events of her childhood would remain with Alice for her entire life. Charles Dodgson remained a prominent mathematician and would hold the Christ Church Mathematical Lectureship until his death in 1898, he never married, and was rumored to have died unhappy and alone. In 1864 Charles Dodgson published one of the stories that he would tell to Alice and her siblings while on their boat trips, Alice’s Adventures Underground. And in 1865 the book was republished under the title Alice’s Adventures in Wonderlandunder the pen name Lewis Carroll. I have more than 30 different copies of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Every time I find an edition or a copy that I do not have, I buy it. I have even reviewed a copy of rendition of the story for Nomadic Press by the author Steve McCaffery called Alice in Plunderland. It was hilarious, satirical, and dark. I recommend it. I have no idea why I have such a strong connection to the book. It has always fascinated me how wonderful the story is, how brilliantly the characters were written, how creative the dialogue is, and how it has brought joy and inspiration to so many people despite its origins having such a bleak beginning. The Walrus and The Carpenter is probably my favorite poem, with Invictus being a close second. And yet I know that Alice Liddell was haunted by the story for her entire life. It is said that she wouldn’t even read it, and only finally did as an old woman once her cricketer husband, Reginal Hargreaves, had passed away. Alice Liddell was even introduced to a middle aged Peter Llewelyn Davies during which Davies pleaded with Liddell about how she managed to live a normal life despite the cloud of having inspired lingering overhead. Peter Llewelyn Davies is the namesake for the famed play Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, though he was unlikely the actual inspiration for the character, but still Peter was preoccupied by the connection for his entire life. James Barrie (J. M. Barrie) acted as a co-guardian of the Llewelyn boys after their mother died. Davies would later throw himself under a train as it was returning to Sloan Square Station in London, committing suicide. It has always amazed me that the two of them, Alice Liddell and Peter Llewelyn Davies, would meet, and to do so for the sole purpose of discussing life after providing a degree of inspiration for two of the most celebrated childrens classics. One of my favorite places, when I lived in New York City, was a sculpture, in Central Park dedicated to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, in Bronze it portrays every character from the story. I would often sit at the Hans Christian Andersen Sculpture and I would write, there were always children playing on-, or people posed and taking pictures on or near the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland sculpture. I would also frequent Alice’s Tea Cup near Columbus Avenue in New York, a Mad Tea Party themed teahouse. Fun Fact: The number on the Mad Hatter’s hat, “10/6,” is a price ticket, ten shillings and a sixpence, which, especially at that time (1864-65) would have been a rather expensive, and therefore very nice hat. I’ve always been partial to Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland even though Burton did not use the name from the original story (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), not to mention Mia Wasikowska’s reinvention of Alice, I mean, how great was that? And, of course, Alan Rickman as Absolem, The Caterpillar. I’m an avid hookah smoker, I have one sitting next to me currently, so he being synonymous with wisdom is quite fitting ;) Nevertheless the most interesting and, probably famous character, aside from Alice, and maybe The Hatter, is The Cheshire Cat, sometimes helping Alice and sometimes getting her into trouble—all of Carroll’s (Dodgson) characters are so amazingly written! They all made an appearance in the sculpture, though some were more difficult to find than others. One year for Halloween, in New York City, all of my friends and I showed up to a party dressed up as The Mad Hatter, we were all The Mad Hatter, which, in-and-of-itself was the costume—the collective introduction of the many faces of The Hatter, it was pretty great. Simon Winchester wrote a really great biography of Alice Liddell titled The Alice Behind Wonderland, it’s a short read and worth every second of your time. There is also a great nonfiction-novel about Alice titled Alice, I have Been written by Melanie Benjamin. Oh my, I love that I had just mentioned a nonfiction-novel about Alice Liddell when in my last blog entry I wrote about Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, which was the first nonfiction-novel. Shit like that, as small and meaningless as it might be for you, I don’t know, man I just think that stuff, all this stuff is really cool! Maybe that’s why I feel as connected to some of these stories and authors as I do, I allow them to take ahold of me, and I want to know more, the intrigue blossoms into a passion, and one day I find myself completely surrounded by books. I get excited about these little things. For example, when I was working at Op. Cit. Books in Santa Fe I found a copy of Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang, now, I mean, everyone knows the movie starring Dick Van Dyke, right? It’s a great movie. There are scenes from that movie that Family Guy has spoofed—which, again, I think is so cool—but, anyway, I find this copy of Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang and I’ll bet that you cannot guess who wrote it? It blew my mind. Do you give up? I’ll give you a hint: “A Medium Dry Martini, Lemon Peel. Shaken, Not Stirred.” Got it yet? That’s right! Ian Flippin’ Fleming! Ian Fleming, the guy who created James Bond also wrote Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang! How can you not love books? The worlds are so incredible.
