I’m going on my first research trip in February to see a seashell show in Sarasota, Florida!
Sanibel, south of Sarasota, calls itself the seashell capital of the world, and they have the only US seashell museum with the word “National” in the title, but Sanibel is still pretty damaged from Hurricane Ian.
So, I’d anyone has hookups for lodging in Sarasota, LMK. But I have decided I can at least budget for this one trip for the book, and more trips if I get a grant.
Then I’m going to check out a fur farm in Michigan, and maybe a zooarchaeologist when I get back (in Salt Lake City, which is also where the nearest big airport is to me.)

HI JD. Please give us an update as to how you and yours are fairing after the devastating hurricane Ian. It is heartbreaking seeing all the damage done to Florida and my prayers go out to all effected. I hope you are in a good situation and that our area was spared the worst. If you have some time, please let us, all your fans and followers, know that you are o.k. Bless.
It was incredibly devasting!
We were outside at our carport at the beginning checking it out. Our group yelled holy shit as we watched people's roofs and pink insulation fly above. Then suddenly, a carport roof landed and rapped itself to my metal upside patio table, which slammed against the carport for hours!
We tried to walk out onto the street, but we got slammed by cold salt water.
My neighbor and I witness a home lose its roof and fall to pieces. It imploded! Ken and I tried to save the man's big-screen TV, but we were pelted by debris going at least 50 miles an hour. I went inside after that one.
The men were getting drunk, yelling at the storm gods as homes fell apart around us. That was the front end of the storm, then the eye came (insert scary music). I was yelling get in the house, goobers! I was desperately closing windows when it came through.
Holy moly, it came through so strong we couldn't see the house next door, and you could feel the walls shaking. At the time, your trying to get hold of God, but his line was busy answering other requests.
Trees snapped in half, and power lines went down left and right.
We no longer had any means of communication.
The water was off. Thank god I made Lee gets 5-gallon buckets of water out of the pool to flush the toilets. It was disgusting! Irma, the water was on but not Ian for days! When they got the water back on, you had to boil it. You could shower, but don't swallow the water! What the hell.
If you have been reading the blog, I kept saying, Be prepared! We were with gas, solar generators, and propane. Two weeks without electricity, close to a month without cable and cell phone. We had rabbit ears for the TV and a hand crank radio.
Now comes the good part, America came through! We are so grateful to everyone who traveled to help us. They provided food, water, essentials, and gas for generators.
Even corporate stepped up. @walmart, @tyson, @elonmusk, @jimmiejohns, @redcross, and others.
Thank you, thank you, god bless America and the best governor on the planet, @RonDeSantis. Our barrier islands lost bridges, and this hero made them to within a week to Pine Island and to Sanibel within two weeks. We are coming back! #southwestfloridastrong
Our hearts are with the families who lost loved ones.
Love JD, and thanks for asking. 💋🤟🏻
PS: I'm breathing, and nerve damage and pain

It was a campaign I shot before Hurricane Ian destroyed Sanibel island two years later. Dec 20, 2020 was a bright sunny Wednesday. Considering wearing face masks and social distancing were mandated because of Covid-19. Tourism was very active on the island and on Ft Myers Beach.
I found that when it comes to traditional Indian Bridal Garments, most images often depict lifeless homogenized images. It’s why I instructed Natalie to play with the breeze off the Gulf when shooting. Which she flawlessly allowed me to capture the life she gave to the garments.
Two years later, the designer placed these three and other images from separate campaigns I shot in this publication’s Dec 2022 issue.

Hello, at long last! ❤️ Thanks for sending these.
📅 A song that calls up a very specific time and place for you
youtube
I'm back into Harvest in a big way lately, and it's fitting as things come full circle in a way that feels potentially significant. This album is nearly bookending an experience that has been at times traumatic but highly conducive to introspection and growth. Like most Americans (/humans?), I had probably heard "Heart of Gold" a dozen times on classic rock radio or something, even if I didn't know it or it didn't make much of an impact on me psychologically. Even when I discovered CSNY and began to dip into their solo endeavors, I listened to it sporadically. So this doesn't mean my first listen is etched forever in my mind, as it is so strongly with "Words (Between the Lines of Age)," where I can almost see the curve of the road I was driving down when that time change first hit me just right. With "Heart of Gold," the moment I remember was quieter, and much more subtle. I had just arrived in a new place all alone and was maybe even a little excited to make it mine. Jan 29, 2021: I was cold and alone in an unfamiliar place, and of course I couldn't sleep well in the uncomfortable temporary space. All night, this song played in my head. For all the unknowns, I had some company somehow. It would still be months before I understood what it meant to me.
🏠 A song you could live inside
youtube
I almost said "Deep Forbidden Lake," because that natural imagery is so beautiful, but no. I want a chance to feel a love as strong as the one in this song and actually be able to *do* something about it.
🔎 A song you can’t stop analyzing
youtube
I appreciate how many people sent me this one 😂 You guys either have a high opinion of my analytical skills or are just humoring my tendency to go off about some piece of music for a few hundred words. Lately I feel like I've been hearing this one a lot, and it always moves me on a visceral level. Sanibel itself, of course, has been in the news recently as it tries to recover from Hurricane Ian, and it never fails to bring this song to mind, perhaps making it even more poignant in the wake of natural disaster. Penned by Nash along with a co-writer, it is beautifully delivered by a couple of alternating vocalists, not a common technique for CSNY! But I wish they used it more. Neil's appearance in the second verse always gets me in the pit of my heart. The lyrics are an ode to the serenity of the beautiful island, but it always makes me feel like it means something more, like maybe the promise of paradise in the life beyond. Melodically, you might as well be in the presence of angels as these four voices blend and raise in perfect accord. The last song on the last CSNY studio album. If this is how they go out, it couldn't really be a better choice.

(possible TW: Natural disaster mention; Hurricane Ian.)
Em hotep~!
Long time, no see. Bear with me, it may be a long one.
The past few years have been what the kids call ✨ w i l d✨ for me. I started my Kemetic journey in 2016, and since then I have moved cross country three times. I was active on tumblr when the first one happened. However, tumblr took a huge back seat in my life as I started walking down my polytheistic path soon after.
I eventually moved to TikTok where I finally got the courage to teach about Kemeticism and make videos right before cross country move two. I had moved to Florida to help my parents run a restaurant on Sanibel Island. Those two years allowed me to flourish into my Kemetic path, teaching and making videos. It is a lot of fun for me!
It also gave me space to open an Etsy shop where I made Kemetic devotional bracelets. It was a dream of mine for the longest time, and I was super thrilled to be able to make subtle things like that for fellow Kemetics.
September 28th 2022, Hurricane Ian took the restaurant from us--and my Etsy shop as I don't have the source for a PO Box anymore. Our personal apartment was safe, but the restaurant suffered massive flooding damage and we aren't able to financially build again. So, cross country move number three took place when my husband got a job back where we were before Florida.
It's been a super wild six years.
However, I was able to find my passion teaching Kemeticism and about The Neteru though TikTok. It eventually led me to start a podcast called The Magic of Egypt that I host with my best friend. I am editing Episode Nine as I write this.
That's where this post comes in. I didn't utilize tumblr for a multitude of reasons; one of them being that it was just too much to add to TikTok, twitter, and instagram. I still won't be utilizing tumblr to be frank with y'all. I might doom scroll sometimes and post what I usually post here but that's about it.
I'll be using TikTok, going LIVE there once a month, and now my Patreon. My Patreon has a few tiers that include Neteru of the Month posts, Deity Tips, a discord server, and more exclusive content. If you're looking for a safe space for Kemetics, I'd love to see you.
I still do offer readings, too! Patreon has access to exclusive monthly Pick a Card readings and LIVES where I'll offer free Oracle card draws there. My path has definitely evolved from where it was and now I'm walking the Priestess Path with Set.
... just yanno, it came with a ton of ✨c h a o s✨, no biggie...
Anyway, thank you so much for reading this far. I wish you the best on your paths. Much love.
Y'all can find me through my other social media: https://linktr.ee/desertrosegoddess

When I was a kid me and my sister would ride our bikes down to this statue down the road.
Her little vase poured water and there was a halo of bougainvillea around her, as seen in this vintage postcard.
I randomly googled it last night and
Hurricane Ian took her out. I'm heartbroken. Between that and the lighthouse on Sanibel being gone my two favorite things in my home town were destroyed. They're going to fix them both, but it's not the same. Also can't totally fix the lighthouse cause the buildings around it were from the 1860s and they were completely destroyed
Fun fact about the statue though, she's across the street from Thomas Edison's winter home, and she was originally supposed to be nude but his prissy wife thought it was inappropriate so they gave her a toga.

I live in South West Florida which was devastated by Hurricane Ian two years ago and killed about 150 people.
Nobody evacuated because it was suposed to hit 2 hours north of us.
We were told Not to evacuate to keep the roads clear for the people in the danger zone north of us.
There's only so many roads out of Florida.
In 2018 Huricane Irma hit and my grandparents who lived in Ft Myers evacuated.
It took 14 hours and every ounce of strength they had to get to the georiga border.
There were no hotels, no shelters open for them. No where to rest or recover and they swore they would never evacuate again.
Irma barely touch their neighborhood and they felt they were completely physically and emotionally exhausted for no reason.
Hurricane Ian saw over 5ft of water sweep through their neighborhood.
They were 5mins from the bridge to Sanibel island in a neighborhood of age 65+ (more like 80+) it was all tiny manufactured homes and trailers and rvs.
Most of those homes are gone now. A handful of people died there in the aftermath from heart attacks and infections to wounds (the clean up process was heart breaking and dangerous) the surge waters took a while to receed.
The stories I could tell about Hurricane Ian.
Please have a heart and don't talk shit about anyone effected by natural disasters.
This week it is Florida, but the same applies.

Fort Myers' Sanibel Causeway (road over the water to Sanibel island) was repaired in less than a week after hurricane Ian thanks to Gov DeSantis. He pulled out all the usual stops. It was damaged badly.

SCCF steps in to help with growing feral cat population
SANIBEL-CAPTIVA CONSERVATION FOUNDATION The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation reported that a population of stray cats has been forming on Sanibel, and it is contributing to efforts to keep the animals off the streets, where they pose a threat to native wildlife. Many residents reported lost cats following Hurricane Ian in 2022 and […]

Journal 7
Estero Island is a barrier island that contains the great Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers Beach was and is a massive area for tourism and homes for thousands of people. It has changed over the years. The first video was a presentation by Mrs.Jo Hughes who was a lifetime resident of Estero Island. She talked about all the changes that have happened to Fort Myers and Estero Island over the years. Mrs.Hughes brought up the man made changes to the island and the impacts they have had on the area and the wildlife. She specifically mentioned how many more canals the island has (over 100) and the risks that the canals posed to the island. She showed the various brides that were made and destroyed to connect the island to the mainland. She made one point about how the Sanibel causeway and how it restricted the flow of water and that she thought it hurt the natural way of things and how a Hurricane could come through and wash it out. Little did she know that would happen a few years later with Hurricane Ian. My mom just like Mrs.Hughes was a life long resident of Lee County being born, raised, lived, and died here in Fort Myers. She always talked about how much things have changed and how built up it had become. One thing she always mentioned is how clear the water was when she was a kid in the 60’s just as Mrs.Hughes did. I wish I could see Fort Myers Beach decades ago when it was quiet and simple, not the built up overcrowded place it is today. The other video of interest was the aerial footage of Fort Myers Beach taken in October of 2022 right after Hurricane Ian ravaged the area. I got emotional seeing it just torn apart as I had spent many sunny days there having fun and eating and exploring. My mom knew lots of the area by heart, having been there thousands of times. The same channel had a video of more aerial footage taken in late May of this year. It's cleaned up compared to the video linked but it is still devastating with just how empty and different the space is. It is going to take years to recover. Once it gets built up again it’ll be nice to explore and see all that is different and all that had stayed the same.
