Fort Myers' Sanibel Causeway (road over the water to Sanibel island) was repaired in less than a week after hurricane Ian thanks to Gov DeSantis. He pulled out all the usual stops. It was damaged badly.

26+ MILE Bike Ride
I no longer trust Gray and Karen. They are always telling us we are going on a little bike ride, or, its only a short drive. Well let me tell you,,, For someone that is as out of shape as I am, 26+ Miles, is not a little bike ride !
Sanibel Island has an amazing Bike Trail System. All the trails are on the map below. And all are nice and wide, and well maintained.
Tumblr media
We drove over the Toll Causeway to Sanibel Island, and parked at the first place we saw, then bilked all the way to Captiva Island !

They are rebuilding the bridge system to the island.

Journal 7
Estero Island is a barrier island that contains the great Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers Beach was and is a massive area for tourism and homes for thousands of people. It has changed over the years. The first video was a presentation by Mrs.Jo Hughes who was a lifetime resident of Estero Island. She talked about all the changes that have happened to Fort Myers and Estero Island over the years. Mrs.Hughes brought up the man made changes to the island and the impacts they have had on the area and the wildlife. She specifically mentioned how many more canals the island has (over 100) and the risks that the canals posed to the island. She showed the various brides that were made and destroyed to connect the island to the mainland. She made one point about how the Sanibel causeway and how it restricted the flow of water and that she thought it hurt the natural way of things and how a Hurricane could come through and wash it out. Little did she know that would happen a few years later with Hurricane Ian. My mom just like Mrs.Hughes was a life long resident of Lee County being born, raised, lived, and died here in Fort Myers. She always talked about how much things have changed and how built up it had become. One thing she always mentioned is how clear the water was when she was a kid in the 60’s just as Mrs.Hughes did. I wish I could see Fort Myers Beach decades ago when it was quiet and simple, not the built up overcrowded place it is today. The other video of interest was the aerial footage of Fort Myers Beach taken in October of 2022 right after Hurricane Ian ravaged the area. I got emotional seeing it just torn apart as I had spent many sunny days there having fun and eating and exploring. My mom knew lots of the area by heart, having been there thousands of times. The same channel had a video of more aerial footage taken in late May of this year. It's cleaned up compared to the video linked but it is still devastating with just how empty and different the space is. It is going to take years to recover. Once it gets built up again it’ll be nice to explore and see all that is different and all that had stayed the same.

Even Dreams
They made the Key West Express ferry with seconds to spare. He watched in silence as the fascinating woman drove them across the Sanibel Causeway, which on the mainland became McGregor Boulevard, which in turn became Summerlin Road. She took the San Carlos Boulevard exit and followed it south to San Carlos Island where she made a left on Main before taking a right just past Shrimp Boat Lane into…

Sanibel Causeway & Waters Then and Now🌀Hurricane Ian
Todd Thurlow eyeonlake.com Today I am trying my hand at posting while mobile. So if the two YouTube videos I share do not come through and eyeonlakeo.com is not linked I apologize. Many of you who follow my blog know my brother’s “Time Capsule Flights, “and his web site eyeonlake.com. Section of the causeway to Sanibel is wiped out
Section of the causeway to Sanibel is wiped out
JUST BEFORE THE SANIBEL CAUSEWAY — Under the toll plaza sign — 1/2 a mile out — McGregor Road to Sanibel Island is impassable. The pavement is folded up like an accordion, ripped to ribbons by a powerful storm surge. Nearby, a spiral staircase was deposited in the brush next to a white pickup. The storm flung a boat trailer and other debris, too. Section of the causeway to Sanibel is wiped…

Sections of the Sanibel Causeway, which connects Sanibel Island to the Florida mainland, were washed away by Hurricane Ian. Many of Sanibel Island’s 6,500 residents evacuated before the storm, but hundreds who stayed were left stranded by the damage. Some have since been rescued by helicopter or ferry. Officials believe the entire causeway, which spans 3 miles (5 kilometers), will need to be rebuilt.

I am wating for you report back, I hope you are staying safe!
Boy howdy, we got HAMMERED.
As of now, we, at Cape Coral, are still without power. Damage was pretty catastrophic. Boats resting on the docks. Some of them against houses.

As bad as it is here, there are other places worse off... The Sanibel Causeway is destroyed. Only way to Captiva/Sanibel is by boat or helicopter.
Fort Myers Beach/Estero Islands are pretty bad too.
But for the moment, I am reporting to say: I am alive!
Will try and keep you updated!

Quote
We’ve been building in harm’s way. We refuse to hear the caution of hurricanes. We refer to them as natural disasters, which is offensive to me because then we blame nature, not ourselves and let ourselves off the hook. As much as I think people there have practiced smart development, we really shouldn’t be on that barrier Island.... We shouldn’t be on any of these barrier islands.
Jack Davis quoted in a report by Divya Kumar in the Tampa Bay Times. Ian’s nasty swipe at Sanibel cuts deep for many Floridians. Here’s why.
A rich history surrounds the island and the causeway leading to it. But Sanibel has suffered the wrath of hurricanes before.
