Estero Island is a barrier island that contains the great Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers Beach was and is a massive area for tourism and homes for thousands of people. It has changed over the years. The first video was a presentation by Mrs.Jo Hughes who was a lifetime resident of Estero Island. She talked about all the changes that have happened to Fort Myers and Estero Island over the years. Mrs.Hughes brought up the man made changes to the island and the impacts they have had on the area and the wildlife. She specifically mentioned how many more canals the island has (over 100) and the risks that the canals posed to the island. She showed the various brides that were made and destroyed to connect the island to the mainland. She made one point about how the Sanibel causeway and how it restricted the flow of water and that she thought it hurt the natural way of things and how a Hurricane could come through and wash it out. Little did she know that would happen a few years later with Hurricane Ian. My mom just like Mrs.Hughes was a life long resident of Lee County being born, raised, lived, and died here in Fort Myers. She always talked about how much things have changed and how built up it had become. One thing she always mentioned is how clear the water was when she was a kid in the 60’s just as Mrs.Hughes did. I wish I could see Fort Myers Beach decades ago when it was quiet and simple, not the built up overcrowded place it is today. The other video of interest was the aerial footage of Fort Myers Beach taken in October of 2022 right after Hurricane Ian ravaged the area. I got emotional seeing it just torn apart as I had spent many sunny days there having fun and eating and exploring. My mom knew lots of the area by heart, having been there thousands of times. The same channel had a video of more aerial footage taken in late May of this year. It's cleaned up compared to the video linked but it is still devastating with just how empty and different the space is. It is going to take years to recover. Once it gets built up again it’ll be nice to explore and see all that is different and all that had stayed the same.

Hurricane Ian, currently downgraded to a tropical storm (though still a very destructive one), is leaving Florida on a north-northeastward path with devastation in its wake.
but now it’s expected to make a second U.S. landfall, turning northwest along the coastline and possibly regaining Cat. 1 Hurricane strength, then going into South Carolina.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
much of eastern Florida is still under watches and warnings. the coastline of Georgia and the whole of the Carolinas are preparing for the same tropical weather.
many heavily-impacted areas of Florida are still without power and communication, so until these areas are reached, it will take a bit longer to know the full scale of the destruction. a portion of Sanibel Causeway was washed away, cutting off access to the Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I suggest reading this article from the Tampa Bay Times, it details some of the destruction very poignantly. much of it was caused by the record-breaking storm surge and high winds.
much of Cuba is still feeling the effects of Ian days later. at one point, the entire country was without power. around twenty Cuban migrants went missing after their boat sank off the Florida Keys, due to Hurricane Ian. some of Cuba’s most important tobacco farms were devastated.

I'll be disgruntled if we pay to rebuild their road and they ever once before or any day after this bitch about paying off people's college loans.
Sections of the Sanibel Causeway, which connects Sanibel Island to the Florida mainland, were washed away by Hurricane Ian. Many of Sanibel Island’s 6,500 residents evacuated before the storm, but hundreds who stayed were left stranded by the damage. Some have since been rescued by helicopter or ferry. Officials believe the entire causeway, which spans 3 miles (5 kilometers), will need to be rebuilt.

I have no electricity, no running water so I haven't showered since last Tuesday, and my cell signal is spotty. But that's the least of my worries.
Hurricane Ian was a freak of nature. It remained a category 3 hurricane long after it made landfall. Winds in my area were clocking 140 mph with gusts up to 160 mph. I could only sit and watch my neighbors trees, roof shingles, and solar panels blow away. Hurricane Ian basically wiped my hometown off the map. Ft. Myers beach, where I made so many memories with my friends and family was completely leveled in a matter of hours. The Sanibel causeway, which was rebuilt after hurricane Charley blew it down back in 2004, is now gone again. Pine Island and Matlacha were decimated. The flooding was horrible. And its still causing problems throughout my state. So many people lost their homes. And lives were lost; the death toll is slowly rising as search and rescue teams look through the carnage. It's unreal. It almost feels like a never ending nightmare. And the weirder thing is, it was absolutely gorgeous outside the day after Ian hit. Partly cloudy, 60° weather, breezy..
I don't think people who live outside of hurricane infested states understand how devastating these storms are. I've lived in Florida my whole life. I was here to witness hurricane Charley, Wilma, and Irma, the worst 3 hurricanes to hit my area. But none of them compared to Ian. This was the first hurricane where I was legitimately worried for mine and my family's safety. And I know some people will ask "Why didn't you evacuate?" Well, some can't and some won't. I worked up until the day before Ian made landfall. Some can't afford to leave. Others have disabilities that would make it hard to travel, like my partner, he has kidney failure and taking his dialysis machine and all the accessories that go with it is a pain. People could have pets, and traveling with pets can be hard.
But most people don't want to leave because this is our home. And nobody wants to leave knowing that they may not have a home to come back to.
And please, to any northerners who come to Florida every winter, please stay home this year. Let us have our home for once. Let us rebuild what was lost. Let us grieve what we lost, because we all lost a lot.
