I know we've been leaning towards Lena having nature/elemental magic. But wouldn't it be cool if she had thread magic?
Literally weaving magic into spells, pouring protection and safety into the weft of Kara's suit and cape... knitting blankets for comfort and reassurance.
I LOVE thread magic. Sandry in the Circle of Magic was my jam. So it would be cool to see Lena do it.
Also, could you imagine richly privileged Lena Luthor learning how to knit and crochet and loom and spin-- peasant work if there ever was.
She wouldn't turn up her nose at it of course, she'd revel in it even. Getting her fingers dirty, fingertips rubbed raw until callus develops.
Lena as a stitchwitch would be AMAZING.

Markab is stuck somewhere probably drunk dialed a random number to get him. Then and hour or so later a limo pulls up and out walks a short troll (sandri was the number but he called him when he was in a full blown persona excursion [horn addictions, clothes the Sandri he knows would never wear, makeup giving him clean skin instead of his freckles, the works] and didn’t other changing to get him)

I think tamora pierce’s circle of magic books hold up and are fun reads and don’t make me wince the way her alanna the lioness books do. but there was one thing in will of the empress that made me say Um
it’s a fantasy setting inspired by renaissance era Europe, primarily the area around the Mediterranean. they also have trade with fantasy China and travel north to fantasy Russia in a couple books. east of them is the “endless sea” but it’s mentioned that chocolate as a drink has become trendy recently so the Americas exist in the setting. and we know that for sure bc daja gets mad at someone and is like “why don’t you cross the endless sea and practice magic with the savages over there” Whoa!
especially to put that in the mouth of daja who is the only black member of the quartet and a member of a fictional stigmatized ethnic group. I think I would still have been shocked if it came from sandry or tris but at least the fact that they’re classist and still working through it is an established part of their characters. it feels so fucked up to make the only black protagonist call other people savages

Why you can and should hate women.
Now I know what you are all thinking, how dare he, he obviously blank blank blank blank blank, but hear me out. You see it's one thing that cash judgment on a title especially one that is designed to sensationalize and grab your attention. But the truth is I have a very thorough and scientific explanation that describes the logic behind this entire process. Bear with me for one moment here. First of all we need to take a good look at the meaning of the word sandry and misogyny. This will give us critical insight into the point I'm trying to make. You see a misogynist isa person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women. And a a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against men. And if you made it this far without revelation I suggest you keep reading. You see there's a paradigm that's about to be shifted right now but some of you will refuse to see it because you believe that the role you play transgresses outside of this website and into our otherwise shared reality. It's while finding in games to play this role inside a reality we collectively share but the issue with that is the fact that I don't recall blindly signing up or volunteering for a reality that contradicts my own. Do you understand? If you do not I understand it's because not all of you were blessed with the ability to see things other people cannot see. Which I was. Oh yes now back to the topic some of you are reading the headline right now and trying to figure out what the hell did I have to have to say about that. And honestly if you are have reached this point of this wondering what the headline about yes it's okay to hate women and why one really really should, hope I thought for one moment. Sorry I had to clear my throat. Now what was I saying oh yes back to the top of your hand. So you were wondering how can I justify it how could I say that how can I say such of a baron of warrant thing. No for reference at this point I am not going to go back and proofread this shit oh hell no to be honest if you got this deep in this shit and still can't breathing not understanding where this shit is going that is on you want this point. To be honest I can see that that last sentence that previous sentence didn't even input correctly, because I am talking too fast. And to be honest if you still haven't figured it out at this point, I would love to spell it out for you but first I need to know some critical crucial information about your time and place and date of birth. You're wondering why that's important because how when you were born directly impacts how you can how you will rather directly interpret the information presented before you. Yes sorry for example if you were born in a year I'm sorry no I got ahead of myself please forgive me. No I didn't mean near I meant sign cuz Western zodiac is adhere to signs in the given year. So if you were born in the sign of an animal that means you have type 31 CK brain. Now this is where it gets a little complicated because I have an animal brain and I hadn't it's so in-depth because of the number of animals that I have not had the time to do a comparison study of the non animal Western zodiac conflagrations. But when you mathematically multiply that by the Eastern zodiac it becomes a complex mathematical formula that's so complex lately mathematical that it's too complex and mathematically complex for me to try to explain to you right here and right now on this school day so to be honest I'm going to leave it right here folks but I wonder I wonder. I want to see wondered how many truth you read all of that and understand why it's okay to hate women and why they should hate women.

I love this series and this statement.
I grew up in an area that was fortunate enough to have few natural disasters or destructive weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. We're landlocked and in a high desert valley, so we do get amazing thunderstorms and have had several terrible floods over the last 100~ years, but luckily my specific spot hadn't had anything horrifying happen in a very long time. Bad storms, a few unexpectedly heavy snowfalls, but nothing making the news. I was taught some basic stuff or learned it from others who had gone through them (stand in doorways during earthquake, go into basement in tornado, the 101s) but honestly worried more about running into things like rattlesnakes or coyotes or bears, maybe an occasional 'have to survive a day or two without shelter/food/water' scenario thrown in.
Then I got caught in a riptide in the ocean and it scared the living daylights out of me. But hey, I don't live by the ocean and now that I am more educated about spoting them/taking a sighted buddy along, I forgot that fear.
Then I drove through a record-breaking blizzard, sudden whiteouts, black ice, semis on their sides and nothing but snow and screaming winds for hundreds of miles all around. You very quickly realize that this is a I Could Very Likely Die Here scenarios: if you stop, you could freeze. If you keep going, you could get hit or drift off the road. If you run out of fuel, you run out of heat. Roads are being closed. Radio is sporadic. There is nothing you can fight, no punch to throw, no menace to intimidate, no heart of a beast to strike at: just Nature, unflinching and immortal.
You can learn and prepare and it means very little. At least if it's a bear I can try to make noise, intimidate it, or make a choice of action based on what I can glean from the bear. I can dig up curves of dry rivers or uproot cacti to find water, I can start a fire with flint and steel or fire bow, I can make different shelters and identify things to eat, I can avoid slopes with loose rock or canyons in storm season, but when Nature unloads, your inability to fight back or enact anything you've learned that could help you in less catastrophic scenarios just bloops out and all that is left is frustration.
Disease is Nature in the tiniest parts of Herself, unseen but no less devastating. When you have no clear enemy to fight and a growing sense of frustration and uncertainty, your mind will start creating ones. Suddenly, since you cannot fight a storm, your focus on what you can do shifts, and boy can it go sideways. What if that's the last gallons of gas going into the car in front of me? What if I freeze because he took them? What if he is just being greedy and that costs me my life? Now that, my lizard brain says, is something you can do something about. It shifts the idea of survival from a hopeless notion when staring at a storm to the potential of survival when seeing a person use resources you need. Those thoughts are dangerous and insidious and exactly why buildings were boarded up from the outside and lit up with plague victims screaming. They couldn't fight the plague, but they could fight the embodiment of it, could resources as an excuse, anything. In that moment, the victims weren't people anymore, they were the physical manifestation of Nature as the Plague, and people can be killed. Enemies can be killed.
Fear is in our nature as animals, yet it is also one of the most unstable and unpredictable part of thought process. We can be concerned or worried without ramping up to fear, and we can use our knowledge as a shield against it. Compassion and empathy have saved humanity more times than anything else, and that is the force we should reach toward.
Rosethorn, in the books, had written quarantine protocol and worked endlessly to find a cure for the strange new pox raging through The Mire. Her main skill is with greenery, but she is powerful beyond that with a will nigh unbreakable, her soft heart surrounded by jagged thorns to keep others away even as she suffers their pains. As a mage and an educated woman, she realizes what they are fighting may be a mystery and an enemy unseen beyond the damage done to its victims. She's also understanding and compassionate enough to realize that fear takes hold where knowledge is unsown, and like weeds choking out transplanted flowers, just as dangerous a foe. She sees the disease as a result of greed and apathy and ignorance, created by the real enemies: the ones who unknowingly created it with their thoughtlessness and breathtaking disregard of safety measures.
I don't want to spoil any more of her story or the Circle series, so I'll stop with that line there. What it boils down to is that Rosethorn's quote is absolutely timely considering what is happening in our world today, and I think @tamorapierce herself would agree that Rosethorn (if she was out and about) would be appalled by how pepple are treating each other and there would be a heck of a lot of sudden bursts of grasses, vines and leaves showing up wrapped around unclean hands and unmasked faces.
Briar sighs, "Rosethorn, you know that Sandry just sent us thousands of masks she'd worked up and stay on whether the person wants it to or not, right?" Sandry did not take any kind of outbreak lightly, for good reasons, and always sent a box of those 'special' masks for people who refused to protect their neighbors by wearing one. It was a simple but devious little twist, and after all, they usually only used 'em when the idiots refused the perfectly normal, removable version. Rosethorn hardly even looked over as she walked past the vaguely man-shaped bush still weaving itself fast around the idiot. "You want to get him free, wait until I'm back at Udra's. Otherwise, you can come back here with the whole box and just open it up when all his 'friends' come over to cut him out and start screaming about mages taking away their rights or whatever such nonsense, come on. "
It would, Briar thought, be much more fun to see the latter.
“You know why I hate plagues? […] Most disasters are fast, and big. You can see everyone else’s life got overturned when yours did. Houses are smashed, livestock’s dead. But plagues isolate people. They shut themselves inside while disease takes a life at a time, day after day. It adds up. Whole cities break under the load of what was lost. People stop trusting each other, because you don’t know who’s sick.“”
— Rosethorn, from Briar’s Book, Tamora Pierce’s Circle of Magic series.

Tris thrust herself away from the table so hard that she knocked over the bench on which she sat. Struggling to pick it up, she cried, “It’s their own fault! What were they doing mucking about the Mire anyway? Everyone knows the poor breed disease!”
Sandry and Daja held their breath as Lark gazed soberly at Tris, raising her eyebrows. Even Tris knew she had gone too far. Her face was beet red with embarrassment and fury, but she met Lark’s brown eyes squarely.
“If they could afford decent places to live, and expensive health spells, they would not be poor, then, would they?” asked Lark.
That made Tris look down. She scuffed her foot along the wooden floor.
“I know you are upset,” Lark continued in that quiet, disappointed tone that made the girls wish they could hide. “You four have not spent a night apart since you came to us, and the spinning of your magics has made you closer than siblings. But you must not let distress make you cruel. Rosethorn is there because it is the way of the Circle to help all, not just those who can pay. Briar went there because that is the soil in which he grew.”
With each word Tris seemed to shrink a little more. Lark never scolded them.
“She didn’t mean it,” offered Sandry, hoping to make peace.
“Whether she did or not is beside the point. No one asks to live in squalor, Tris. It is just that squalor is all that is left to them by those with money.” Lark stood, her shoulders drooping. “When I got the wheezes, what the healers call asthma, I couldn’t work as a tumbler anymore. The only place I could afford to live was the Mire.”

I picked up the first book from a series I read when I was a kiddo, when I used to grab absolutely every book about fantasy and magic from the library. Because I always just devoured everything I could find, I would read random books from the middle of a series or all out of order. 😆
And that was definitely the case with the Circle of Magic books back in the day! Gosh, I barely remember at all any coherent parts of the storyline, thanks to the mixed-up order of my chaotic childhood reading. So I'm reading it now to finally know how the story actually goes. 💝
BUT! It's shocking me how I remember SO MUCH from the beginning of this book!! It must have been 20+ years ago that I read it, but the introductory scenes of each of the four heroes are sooo clear. Sandry weaving threads into a braid while hiding in the storehouse, Daja being recovered from the shipwreck, Briar being comforted by the greenery in his jail cell, and Triss summoning storms with her volatile moods. I'd forgotten a lot of the particulars, but those four key scenes are still SO vivid. 🌈
Did any of you all read the Circle of Magic? 🤗 Did it have you believing that magic was something you could really do in your daily life like it did to me?? 😆

Hi, I am listening to your podcast and you and your cohorts are great and very interesting to listen to, I found this tumblr and the post in defence of Kirel, who I feel sad for in the podcast as I've always liked him and I went to read the post and the link is no longer working do you have it posted elsewhere?
Hey, thanks for listening! I hope you like the podcast, even when we do go on long tangents harrassing each other about minor characters. Some of our blog posts got lost when we migrated to Acast, so how about I repost it here?
In Defense of Kirel
Those of you who have been following our podcast for a while may have noticed a rift forming between our hosts--with ND and I on one side and Britni and Goodwin on the other. This argument, of course, is about Kirel. In case you forgot, Kirel is a "great northern lad" serving as Frostpine's apprentice. A minor character in the series, he only appears about three or four times in Sandry's Book. Nevertheless, this has been enough for ND and I to fall in love with him, claim he is adorable, and wish we could see more of him, and for Goodwin and Britni to refer to him respectively as "a jerk" and "a little b****."
The proud and defensive part of me wants to comment that these are strong words about someone who appears on probably no more than ten pages. But I'm sure we'd all agree that Liesa fa Nadlen, who appears on no more than two pages, perfectly deserves her punishment when Sandry calls her a cat. So why this great rift? Why such strong disagreement about Kirel? Two obvious answers come to mind: the first that ND and I had read significantly more of the series than our co-hosts, and thus we actually know more about Kirel, so we know what's to like about him. The second theory is that reading the books as adults, Britni and Goodwin bring something with them to the story that ND and I didn't have when we first met Kirel. Considering the array of people in the Virtual Emelan Facebook group that agree that Kirel is lovable, I think this is the more likely of the two. Nevertheless, I would like to posit yet a third theory as to this difference of opinion. I think it is subtler in nature, and lies in the distinction between our favorite characters.
While its safe to say that all four of us find some amount of kinship with all four protagonists, if asked to pick a favorite, ND and I quickly cite Briar, while Britni and Goodwin favor Daja. Therefore, ND and I have both developed the feelings of playful rivalry towards Dedicate Crane (rejoicing when Sandry pulls rank on him at the gate to Discipline Cottage and ignoring the fact that Briar did just commit a crime) while Britni and Goodwin have developed a strong need to protect Daja (which, for anyone who has already read Daja's Book, will note is very Tris like behavior).
But one of the wonderful parts of digging into a text with the depth we do on the podcast, especially when, like myself, one is re-reading the text, is that we have the opportunity to examine and question our points of view. We can ask ourselves why we feel the way we do about the the characters. And isn't that the whole point of this podcast? To hold these books up like a mirror and see what else we can learn about ourselves and the people around us? To hone our skills in reading not just books, but the world around us in an attempt to improve upon it? So today I'm going to try to dig in to Kirel's motives and see if we can come to understand him better.
While Goodwin has not yet gone into detail about the specific reasons he thinks Kirel is a jerk, Britni has mentioned two specific scenes that have incited several minute long rants (which is a lot in podcast time). Let's take them in turn. The first is when Daja drops a piece of red hot iron and catches it with her bare hands, and Kirel freaks out. Britni thinks this is inappropriate behavior because Frostpine warned him that he would see weird things, and Kirel should have listened. In all fairness to Britni, she's pretty consistent about her beliefs. She was also pretty quick to criticize Tris for not listening to Niko when he told her not to control the weather, and in my opinion, Niko was much more specific about his warning. "Don't try to control the weather" logically seems like it would include stopping the tides whereas "you're going to see some weird things" does not necessitate a ten year old girl holding red-hot iron.
We got into this argument on the podcast as well. Britni implied it was unfair to say a man could do something that a girl couldn't, so let me clear: the point of this is not gender. The point is age and experience. From smithing to basic language, what an experience adult can do, a child usually cannot. Pierce could have made Frostpine female and made Briar the smith mage, and I would have still felt Kirel's reaction was justified. Yes, Kirel was told he would see "weird things." Let us also remember that he is working with the greatest smith mage in the world, and that smith magic isn't particularly common already (remember, Rosethorn and Lark mention that Frostpine has been looking for someone with his gift for years.) So it's reasonable for Kirel to assume, as he literally says in the narrative, that Frostpine's ability to hold hot metal was developed due to years of magical practice. Let's also remember that at this point in the narrative, no one has said that Daja is a mage. Literally, the only people who know about Daja's magic are Niko, Frostpine, Lark, and Rosethorn. Kirel has no reason to know. Daja herself doesn't know (meaning that if you're about to suggest that Frostpine might have told Kirel, we've got an even bigger issue because it's pretty icky to tell Kirel if he's not going to tell Daja.) So from Kirel's point of view, Daja is a very normal ten year old... until she catches hot metal with her bare hands. Do you know any ten year olds who can hold red hot iron with their bare hands? Exactly. I think Kirel's reaction is perfectly justified.
So let's move on to scene number two, which takes place shortly after Daja has found out that she has magic, and Frostpine tasks her with identifying metal without using her eyes. Kirel asks if he can join in. Judging from Britni's reaction to this scene, this absolutely infuriates her. Because it's not about Kirel, it's about Daja, who has to learn the basics, which Kirel already knows. But does he? See, the other part of having Kirel in only four scenes is that aside from he's essentially Norse and apprenticed to a blacksmith, we don't really know anything about him. So let me posit a headcanon for you:
I imagine that Kirel is the youngest of five or six boys. His family isn't nobility, like Sandry's, but they're fairly well off, and his parents are concerned with people carrying on their good name. Fortunately for Kirel, he's got older brothers to do that for him, so he can kind of pursue whatever career he wants, within reason. But he's also constantly competing for attention with his older siblings, who are better than him at everything. Sure, they're older and more experienced, but that doesn't change the fact that they can all spin circles around him singing "anything you can do, I can do better." Kirel wants something that will allow him to help people and separate him from his siblings. So he decides to go into smithing (remember, he's specifically working on iron, which means he's probably mostly making common items for every day people.) His parents aren't real big fans of it, but they don't stop him. He gets work as an apprentice around fifteen, only his teacher cares more about proving that Kirel is worthless than actually teaching him, which eventually leads to Kirel getting badly burned in an accident that could have easily been avoided.
Kirel's parents try to use this as an excuse for him to pursue a "reasonable" profession. But it turns out he likes smithing. He likes the feel of seeing things being made, and the meditative quality of working in the forge. One way or another, he meets Frostpine, who is impressed with Kirel's dedication and his quick ability to learn. Kirel almost sees a sparkle in his eyes, like for once, someone sees him and thinks he's special. Until Frostpine finds out about the incident where Kirel was burned. Frostpine doesn't criticize or blame Kirel for this problem, but Kirel knows there was a light in his teacher that got snuffed out so quick he didn't have time to figure out what it meant. But Kirel likes smithing. And he likes Frostpine. And his parents can accept that apprenticing to a smith at Winding Circle Temple is damn respectable, so he goes. Frostpine warns him he's going to see some weird stuff. Like a man holding red hot iron. This freaks him out, and reminds him of the time he got severely burned. But Frostpine is patient, and Kirel wills himself to get used to it. Because that's what this job takes. A few weeks later, this ten year old girl comes along and is interested in working with Frostpine. Kirel is happy to see her. It's nice to have someone else to learn with (because who's to say he knows the basics. We have no idea how long he's been here.) Then Kirel realizes that Daja has that spark--that thing that Frostpine hoped he had, but didn't. And once again, he knows he will be shunted to the side, as he's always been. Because Frostpine is a great smith mage. And he is none of those things.
But you're going to sit there and tell me you have never once, in your whole life, ever been jealous of anyone?
My point is that Britni and Goodwin are criticizing without context, and it's not particularly fair to condemn someone without trying to understand the behavior behind their actions. Then again, should we also consider my actions here? I mean, I made up an entire backstory to make two people feel guilty about the way they're treating a fictional character. And if we're going to closely examine Britni and Goodwin for defending Daja to the point of rage against Kirel, it's only fair that we also closely examine my intense defense of Kirel.
Why do I get so defensive about this? Why does it bother me that someone else feels such dislike toward this character. Especially when people can criticize Peter Pan, which is possibly the only thing I'm more obsessed with than the Circle of Magic, and I'll shrug and say, "yeah. That makes sense." Well, I guess that's the reason. To me, it just doesn't make sense. Or perhaps, more accurately it's the opposite. Perhaps Kirel does make sense to me. I relate to him. I mean, there's a reason I created a backstory in which he has very talented older siblings, abusive teachers, and a constant pressure to prove he is worthy even though he knows he's not particularly extraordinary, and he works every day with people who are. I feel that. I know what it is like to feel like you have to be super-human. I know what it's like to feel like you can't be more than second-best. And I know exactly what it feels like to sit right next to someone who you actually like and also feel jealous of them. So I can't condemn him for that. I understand it all too well.
But understanding behavior is not necessarily a reason to excuse it. After all, I can understand the behavior of the boys who attack Daja--they have been raised to fear traders and their gut instinct is to attack her before she attacks them. But this doesn't give them a right to harm her. Which brings us to the real question here: are Kirel's actions acceptable? Obviously, I can't be unbiased about this, but I will try look at his actions one more time as objectively as possible.
First, Kirel freaks out when he sees Daja hold red hot iron in her hands. I stand by what I said before. I think his actions here are acceptable because even in Emelan, there's really no reason for anyone to expect a normal ten year old to be able to hold red hot metal in their bare hands. To hold Kirel to different standard because he's worked in Frostpine's forge for an unspecified amount of time is unfair.
In regards to wanting to participate with Daja and Frostpine's activity, I think there is an argument to be said that he shouldn't have butted in. He should have known that this wasn't an activity for him to participate in. But I personally cannot bring myself to say he behaved poorly because this is, after all, a book about outcasts finding family and belonging, and what is Kirel in this moment if not that? If he had continued to do that, it would be inappropriate, but I don't see evidence of that. Instead, I see evidence of Kirel trying to swallow his pride (and his jealousy) and continue to show kindness to Daja and her friends (he does, after all, help Tris when she can't walk.) I think this is not only appropriate behavior, but shows a strength of character that many people don't have. So here's to Kirel--may we all seek to have such a kind-hearted nature as you. (At least until Britni refutes this essay next week.)
Addendum to the original post: In recent episodes, Britni has mentioned that after reading the Circle Opens quartet, she's not all that bothered by Kirel anymore. After all, we now know what real villains look like--Lady Zendaia, the Dihanurs, Ben, and the Ghost. It seems that in those early books, where there aren't a lot of "bad guys," Kirel is one of the first people you can latch on to as antagonistic, especially if love Daja as Britni and Goodwin do.

Lark and Rosethorn are textually confirmed in will of the empress! It's in other characters' reactions to Daja learning she herself is a lesbian
switching from leaving comments to sending an ask: yes i believe Daja is a lesbian! i *thiiiink* she has a girlfriend in one of the later books? but i only read the main two quartets and listened to Melting stones so i'm not sure. Lark and Rosethorn were confirmed gay (on twitter i think?) but it's never explicitly said in the books, only heavily hinted at
I've read the majority of Tamora Pierces tortall/circle books so if you ever wanna talk about them :eyes: just lmk
Oh yeah Lark and Rosethorn was the most obvious 'hint' I had back then 🤣 two ladies who live together who use most of their limited 'screen time' on hovering around each other and using polite double speak to describe their relationship? They're lesbians Harold. Okay maybe not lesbians idk if they're bi or something because again, not that far, but definitely picked up what was being put down.
Personally I think I would have liked if Pierce could have flat out stated in the books, but I also understand that she had some trouble getting into certain characters' heads due to lack of lived experience, and she wanted to make sure to do it right if she was going to add representation, and I can respect that. I know she said she really hesitated writing Briar for that reason, she knew how to write little girls growing into women but was afraid she'd do her little boy growing into a man an injustice.
I do really appreciate that she takes the time to listen to fans who gently guide her when/if she does fuck something up, and that she makes the effort to make her books enjoyable for all readers who want to read strong female-led stories.
#pierce is one of the few people I'll take word of god from for a variety of reasons one of which#it's that most of her characters that are WoG queer now were written that way on purpose#and if it isnt textual that's too do more with either she didn't know that was a thing people had described ie for Sandry and Kel#or publishing constraints such as either getting taken out during the exit process for flow or because#in the case of the Emelan books they were published by Scholastic in the early 2000s what do you think that was like#plenty of stuff is just coding and that's what transformative works are for#to explore what we want + what could have been or would just have been funny but for reasons like those above wouldn't fit a published work#you can pry ace sandry and vedris/niko out of my cold dead hands but only one was author intent#and thats okay!!#idk anything about OP or what their experience is this all just seemed to boil over so have some tags

I’m going on a really long meta rant about The Bartimaeus Trilogy
Dang, it is 8 paragraphs long, I’m so sorry.
I was talking with a friend who read the Bartimaeus Trilogy back in high school and had finished the Lockwood and Co. books over the summer about how long the two series take to engage your interest. We both definitely agreed that Bartimaeus takes way longer than Lockwood, despite both of us preferring Bartimaeus (though both definitely enjoying Lockwood). It would be easy to pass this off as Bartimaeus just being way denser and Lockwood being more lighthearted fun, but I don’t think that’s the full answer.
I’m going to tell you something that might be a tad controversial for this fandom considering how much we talk about how amazing the Bartimaeus Sequence is: I actually returned Amulet of Samarkand to the library less than half read the first time I tried to read it. This isn’t entirely because of of AoS’s quality. The librarian who introduced me to the series sent me home with Sandry’s Book at the same time because I’d asked for recommendations for adventurous fantasy stories without any romance and learning about Tamora Pierce’s stuff kind of derailed any other reading plans I had that summer. (The same thing happened a couple years later when I brought home The Fellowship of the Ring and The Colour of Magic at the same time and did not read the Lord of the Rings until after I had finished every single Discworld book, but I digress.) But anyways, I got to the part just after Nat sent Bart off after he learned his name and did not pick it up again until that winter, when I decided to give it another shot, finished it in a frantic all nighter that night, requested Golem’s Eye and Ptolemy’s Gate the next day, picked them up on the next trip to the library, read each of them in a day, got very sad and emotional, and then got introduced to the concept of fanfiction when I went looking to see if there had ever been an alternate ending written for it. It was a very full 2 weeks and I was very tired by the end of it.
Clearly, it’s a really good series and a really moving one. Why is it so hard to start it?
My friend and I almost perfectly agree on the exact point the series gets truly interesting. I think it’s the fight in Pinn’s shop. She thinks it’s when Bart gets arrested. These are arguably part of the same scene. And my theory is that this is the first point in the series when you can’t actually tell exactly where it’s going.
To be clear, the story before that point isn’t bad exactly. It’s funny, it’s got a cool heist sequence, it’s got a lot of thought provoking world building. But I think in establishing Bart and Nat as actually competent at what they’re each doing, Stroud accidentally ruined a lot the suspense needed to suck you into a story. They’re too good at what they’re doing and the story unfolds exactly as you expect it to. And no, Bart learning Nat’s name doesn’t count towards suspense or twists or anything like that; from the moment it’s established true names have power you just know Bart’s going to figure out Nat’s name.
But! Then there’s the scene in Pinn’s shop when Bart fucks up HUGE and gets arrested and the obvious way for him to escape gets pointed out by the narration as being the kind of thing that would happen in a bad novel...and gets shut down immediately and brutally as impossible. And the way he does escape has consequences that at least I a middle schooler at the time did not remotely see coming. And the series goes off in an incredibly different direction than everything was pointing to and finally gets really good.
My friend then said that the reason boiled down to the house burning down halfway through the book in Amulet of Samarkand but as part of the first act for The Screaming Staircase and I can’t see the lie. Shit must hit the fan to be interesting, and what is Lockwood and Co. but shit being dumped onto the fan at regular and frequent intervals? Sure, the plot isn’t necessarily as deep as Bartimaeus, but the execution was phenomenal and you frequently got the impression that Stroud was having a hoot writing it.
I’m going to chalk it up to Stroud just getting better as an author after all that practice writing books between the two series for why it turned out that way.

Star Wars Episode 4;
Destroy malevolence
Didn’t we just do that?
I’m assuming this is going to be focusing on the aftermath of the destruction of the malevolence
And the preceding unraveling of general grievous’s net work
[And several acquaintances probably trying to break him out,]
Anyway...
On with It!
Quote;
“A Plan is only as good as those who see it out,”
Odd I’ve Stopped giving much stock into the quotes
Consider ing the last one had a relatively good one
And Is on the lower end of my expectations
My criticism of this Is a Short Plans can be good But People flawed
The narrator sounds a bit more enthusiastic
Weirdly drawn out pause
But it does get the point across
Allows enough time
“ Grievous in retreat,” Honestly Is this where we’re going to start
Like no disrespect- (I have the patience) But are we honestly going to spend the whole entire time watching Obi-Wan fuck up catching Grievous?
That would work with the theme of Jedi Masters
They make it seem a lot less stupid
[Recap
Also I really like the movement on the ship
Much more real istic
Continuing to Hold on it not so much
This is like someone continuously kicking someone when they’re already down
Or like a fire
After a while it just gets sort of boring
Or worrying
And you realize they could just take them into custody
Or that the fire is starting to envelope nearby forest With everyone having a bucket of water
Obi wan, why
Do you torment so?
He can’t even die
If so; He’d be dead
I love how Plo Koon and him are just watching the shit show like “Bitch”
You know they could both take him
But are just that dedicated to being sandry old man
“Commander, how much damage to the enemy ship?”
Have they suffered enough?
Also, geez dude’s been demoted it to commander
I mean I know he’s just Comms Guy But geez. (He probably deserved it)
Oh no, Random dude On The ground
Why?
“ She’s lost primary shields and stabilizers,”
So shooting at it is doing minimal damage
“ It can take all the fire our cannons can manage,”
Okay, time to get you two down there
“ we must summon reinforcements,”
Plo is slowly becoming that we “need reinforcements” guy
Like he can’t do anything by himself
(Except for last episode)
“ That’s why I’m here Master Plo,”
That’s not the right tone
And..... I was kind of hoping we’d get a Master Plo and Obi-Wan episode
This time around
Never mind the fact that Anakin can’t take on grievous
“ what are you able to contact Master (Liam Niara) (That’s how voice text spells it) (I have no idea)
“ Yes, master,”
That’s better
“She’s busy with a bunch of separatist reinforcement’s nearby,”
Bit too much eye movement but otherwise good
“ she won’t be able to give us support till she’s turn ing them away,”
Meanwhile you’ve already pretty much kill ed him
Guess just play poker?
Then we’ll have to do with what we have
Oh now with the teenager around you’re so brave
How’s that going to help?
Burning
On fire
Really, no mercy
Poor droid jerking around
Ex ploding
Perfect balance of kar mic pay back
“We’ve lost our primary weapon,”
Shit just continues to get worse and worse
General grievous is just there with his hands in his head
Not looking too great
“ The hyper drive is dis -abled,”
It’s been disabled since last episode but good repeating
Good to re-iterate
“Argh,”
“ General general,”
The forward engines are shutting down
“ im poss ible,”
Dude, look around
That’s pretty - heavy denial
You should just sur -render
More Sho -oting
This is going to be a sl -ow ep i sode
Ahsoka Managing systems
A not bad role for her
Certain-
“ Admiral Status- Re port,”
Shit’s fucked once again
They’re hyperdrive must be damaged
What you didn’t figure out the first time will Obi won must’ve checked
Compulsively For the 170th time in the last hour
“This our chance”
It wasn’t a few seconds ago?
“all ships target the bridge maximum fire power,”
Dude, what do you think that’ll do
Grievous is made out of pure titanium
It’s like.. a slightly long fall for him..
Generals.. really don’t wanna deal with Grievous’s shit today
Episode is 22:40 Long Left
All they’re doing is shooting at him
Grievous Called Dooku
“Dad I crashed the car,”
Sustained advanced damage
“ I know,”
Just dead panned
“ I have arranged a trap,”
Oohh! Interesting
But Also completely bullshit
Guess this is his punishment
Being used as bait
“To give you an advantage over the Jedi,”
“ I assure you,”
Please no
You’re not compound your failure this day,”
Ah, there’s the chewing out I was looking for
Perfect
Continue
“ war ship to fall,”
Oh so it wasn’t going to be a - get them sent to prison- thing
So how are you planning to unfuck the situation
Cause this looks pretty bad
They will never catch me or this ship
Bless him he’s trying
The expression just says ‘I have no idea how’
Like He knows what’s expected of him but has no idea
How?!
Heading towards you is a very important galactic senat or,”
In the middle of a war zone
Seriously not a good time for a photo op
“ With her as a hostage,”
“call off the attack,”
Ok no one is calling off an attack this important for a senator
Nor should be letting her get captured ....
*Bowing down*
*Assumed authority*
Blue
It looks remarkably better this episode 👍 Also of course it’s Padme Amidala Couldn’t be any of the 4000 other senators we know nothing about
Really getting into the love triangle stuff right away, aren’t we?
Like why couldn’t we slow burn it
(I know she was in the movie) But
I wouldn’t mind “Are you sure the infor mation from the chan cellor Palpatine is reliable?”
Fore shadowing!
Good job authors you get a cookie
“ it was secretly given to him by the leader of the Bank-he Clan, himself!”
Okay Amidala’s tone kinda works
Could use a little more monotone but it works
I gave Anakin like three tries so I’m not gonna be too harsh
There is still time for the minimal improve ment it needs
“ if they leave the separatist alliance it will go along way to shortening this war,”
Er- Okay it makes sense for her character
She’s sup posed to be around the same age as Anakin
“Beep, Beep,”
“ We’re approaching the system now,”
“Oh shit,”
Crud
“ my goodness,”
Best Droid
“This isn’t right,”
Then Move!
That’s a droid warship
“We’re in the middle of a battle!”
Hey, that’s a smart character
Hyper drive out of there
“ we’re scanning a small ship off our bow,”
Get out of there “ Good,”
Yeah, how are you going to get her?
Seeing as how like a million warships are belting your bow?
I know those must be like raindrops to him
But come on
Don’t go into the burn -ing wreckage
And towards enemy fire
Then again she was probably heading towards the Jedi ship
So (as a civilian) that makes sense
“Master I’m picking up a signal near the enemy vessel,”
Tone
Enemy reinforcements
That’s- A Good Call
Respectively
“ it looks like-”
“A Naboo ship”
“Gunners stand day,”
Hey everyone’s competent today!
(Not that there’s anything wrong with enablers being stupid)
This just requires more brain power
“ what in Blazers are they doing out here?”
A valid response
But weren’t they the ones that pledged transport ships?
Like oh yeah stupid going out into a war zone
But not completely out of the question
“ Ahsoka contact that ship,”
Bit too much energy
But still resp ect able
Literally coming from fiery hell
Identify yourself
“Padme what are you doing out here,”
Cringe
That line sounds like boomer. What boomers think high school jocks sound like
And we’re like no
“ I was sent on a special mission,”
Good job Writers
The ‘Bang he Klan Wanted to negotiate a treaty
Good reason
“Get out of there,”
Too Force ful
Better Idea; Have Obi-Wan try to calmly explain the situation to her
Possibly distracting her for general grievous to kidnap
“ Activate the tractor beam,”
Damn we’re going back to old old sci Fi- with tractor beams and shit
I was expecting like a hook and chain, a harpoon
Was not expecting that
That made me laugh
WTF
Tell them some nonsense is going on!
“i’m afraid it’s much worse than that,” Gunners Do Something?!
it’s a beam; it can be broken
“ Padme what’s happening?”
A go- decent response
“ i’m being pulled inside the droid cruiser by a tractor beam,”
Good Commun ication
Whelp, Done
So at 22: 40 Rest of the episode is hostage situ ation?
Inter es ting
Much Better Than Just Shooting at it for an hour
“I will not be made a separatist bargaining chip,”
Initiative
Though Less Emo -tion
Should be recited like something she had to read off a paper
Guessing I’m not Padme I’m Padme’s handmaiden thing only works once
Continue your attack
You must continue-
I hope she get some actual action
Nothing too intense because she’s still a kid
But like a surprise attack on General grievous
Destroy this monstrous ship
That’s kind of like-
How-
I saw the next frame
Wtf-

WTF
HIS FACE JUST-
CON-torts
You are not Romeo and Juliet movie
You are two kids reinacting Romeo and Juliet clumsy
Get it right
“Admiral, order our ships to stop firing,”
No one’s gonna stop this
No one‘s gonna comment...
Okay....
Obi-Wan And Plo Koon are just gone
Left when Anakin started acting unchild like
Never mind still there
Nothing suspicious *Rubs beard*
Whelp
It does not look safe out there my lady
Screw with the tractor beam and leave
No one can stop you
Droid Related
“I see now this whole thing was a trap,”
The Bang’he Clan Works With The-
I can’t even make that joke because the bang’he clan are working with the separatists
Good writers you out joked me
“ we walked right into it,”
Pressing buttons isn’t going to help lady
Sir the republic cruisers have halted their attack
Bit too much emotion for a droid but it works
“Jedi are so predictable,”
Hit him with a gun
Get the repair team up here
“ i’m going down to the main hanger,”
The arm motion was a little weird... for ‘I’m going down to the main hanger’
Street Railways?
Are we getting *tour the inside of the ship??
Nice
This ship must be returned to Count Dooku intact
Nice little interaction
Rail ways
There’s no room for failure
Hard Moral
One on fast speed ing train
Moves over to another pad
Don’t think that’s gonna help
“Come on I’ve over loaded the power system,”
THAT’S actually really clever
Good job whoever gave that order
General grievous goes boom
Fighter door opens
Find a Fighter
And fly out
* Anakin walks away*
You know this would be a good idea if Obi-Wan had ordered him to do so when feeling the emotion of ‘love’, miscommunicating the concept of love, and didn’t realize that’s what he was doing - what clues him in
“ where do you think you’re going,”
“ someone’s got to save her,”
Still too much emotion
“I thought you might say that,”
Did you give him that, did you give him an order relevant to that?
There he goes again
Yeah Someone should really check up on that
Or get Obi-Wan to lay off the suicidal orders
“Craving adventures and excitement,”
No, orders
“ You get used to it”
Could be just a response
But too much reaction And Person ality
Oh, Shit’s On Fire
“Come on 3PO hurry,”
Flaming wreck lady
“not sure this is such a good idea,”
Neither is being held captive
You’re made of like solid gold
Timing
[also the announce in the background like a train station - just cracks me up]
Time to get blown up
“ Mind the gap”
“Mind the gap”
Haha
You two come with me
Command
That droid’s-
No, wait- It’s Amidala
And C3PO
He’s trying to help
Looks Inside
Beeping
Timer
Look like the engine- Are Set To -
Timing
“Destroy themselves,”
He really needed them to say that
Get out of my way
“Ow,” You don’t want to die
That’s just rude
So is death
You should get out of there
He’s going to come back around
Geez
Fire squad is a train wreck
They’re Trying
Crud if this gets back to Skywalker and he thinks she’s dead
After That Speech
Who knows what toxic morals of love Obi-Wan taught him could activate
This could become a train wreck
Ahhh!
It got worse
Seriously who made the droids that have to with stand high water pressure Light weights
Oof
Even high water pressure cannot kill him
Even running away cannot save him
Wonder what that attack would’ve done
Sound the alarm
“We have stowaways,”
Or...
She was never on that ship
Seriously no one besides the republic saw her
I’d go with “she isn’t on board,”
Run
Back to the republic ships
Who are doing nothing while grievous rebuilds
Like, The medical station is right there
You might want to get back on moving them
Just Saying
“ i’ve trusted you already formulated a brilliant plan to rescue the Senator,”
“ as a matter of fact I have,”
Umm,
Weird How to Code that
“ what do you have a Plan B Every good plan has a back up,”
Stop forcing his dependence on you
“ I don’t have a back up yet,”
Too much emotion
Really
Questioning
Not really helping his self-esteem
Really “ we’ll sneak behind them and dock at the emergency air lock,”
So I’m guessing this is going to set up Padme going there
“ That’s your plan?” Discouraging
“Fly land,”
That’s literally what all maneuvers rely on
Also it sounds like something out of a fairy book
Which might explain Anakin toxic behavior
“ Walk in the door,”
“Basically,”
Too much emotion
“Oh Brilliant,”
Dick
Firey Wreck
“ Might I suggest we keep moving?”
Bit Loud There It
“ I think I hear battle droids approaching,”
Talking is not helping
“But we also need to contact the fleet,”
Getting out is the prerogative
They don’t know where you are
And you can’t stay in a constant location
If I can just keep this com panel working
Ahhh!
Well just disappeared
“The Damage to the hyper drive was not as bad as we first thought,”
How?!
It’s been damaged for about two episodes
Also, Good for Her
“ We’ll be able to get underway again shortly,”
With this mess of a ship
Hyperdrive would send half of it flying
It’s barely holding together by a string
You’re screwed
I must inform count Dooku
Seems oddly suspic.
Continue the search
Find the stowaway
How does that change anything in Amidala’s eyes
Getting to know the boss isn’t worth it
Just be more careful
Roger, roger
Commander
Intimidating
*Spark*
Oh She Was In A Cabinet
Thought she made it in
C3PO Looks creepy in one frame
Shit’s Constantly on fire
“If they spot us we’ll be pulverized,”
With what guns??
You’ve been doing all the hitting this entire time
They’ve been sitting Geese
“They’re too busy repairing the ship,”
Thank you
[also Obi-Wan complainers rules]
“ They don’t have time to notice us,”
Cocky
Subtlety has never been one of your strong points Anakin
Neither Yours Person who orders him!
“ Everything I know I learned from you master,”
Point Yes Attitude? No
Oh if only that was true
Should Be
Might be a side jab at how he took orders from the Chancellor
There we go
Only Obi-Wan was worried
“Didn’t You Hear It,”
Your circuits are loose
Or maybe you’ve lost your hearing
From the impact
“ No one’s crazy enough to do that,”
Cut
“Anakin”
Perfect
“You’re Crazy,”
You groomed him this way
“ spinning is not flying”
“But it’s a good trick,”
Too much emotion
Do not want to be spotted
Good job
You’re standing more in the doorway than he is
“I knew it it’s them,”
That droid is just having a day
Aww But his friend came down to check with him
That’s adorable
Oh no
They’re backing off peacefully
ASSHOLES!
Obi-wan specifically
You stay here R2
Again why did you bring him
Another bold strategy by -
Say Skywalker
‘Skywalker’
Ordered
“I presume,”
No, Obi-Wan’s
When it’s not Palpatine’s
“That’s my master”
Children don’t show preference for handlers
“ once they rescue the Senator we will need to reinforcement to finish off the enemy
Sounds nonsense but OK
Dude really Likes enforcement’s “ i’m on my way,”
“Master Plo”
“ We’re receiving a transmission,”
Padme
Weird distance to start a conversation at
Running for some reason
“ Master we found the senator,”
Good
“ We’re patching Her through,”
Helpful...?
What is it with Skywalker and becoming a Barking over- animated Puppet Every time senator Amidala gets involved ?
“Anakin where are you,”
Better; where are your coordinates
“ On lower levels,”
Better but where
“I don’t know,”
Give a better location
For how long
Problem with this whole plan
Give Landmarks
Get to the rendezvous point
“Obi won and I are on board too,”
Better; get to the ship on level ____ on your ___ side Optional; Closest landmark ____
We’ll meet you there
What what are you doing?
Not the best point to argue
Ahsoka, how can we get to the senator
Better how can we both get to the escape pad?
In case we both get separated
Taking longer to coordinate that complicated-
How long till they get separated?
Center of the ship
Half way between the two of you
Neither Ahsoka gave neither
Bad instructions
“ we’re on our way
To a very unspecified point on not specified level at a not specified time
Let the hijinks commence
“ Did you hear that Padme?”
You’re on the same com
“ i’ll be there,”
Some-how
The question to my answer was 22:40
When do the Hijinks begin?
Let’s See
Marching Intimidated
“we just detected An unauthorized communication Coming from within the ship,”
Shouldn’t he be making a phone call?
“ what did it say?”
Interesting
Well we don’t know
That’s how encoding works
We didn’t catch it in time
Off
Droid winces
Monitor all internal communications
Like they’ll do it again
I want that senator on this bridge
Good luck with that
You haven’t even saw her
Rail-ways
Nice
Busy
Should be a cakewalk
Is Not a cakewalk
All the way up there
“I do not see her,”
Yeah, that’s the problem-
She’s here master
I sent it
Or you got the wrong port
(So you heard her voice so she’s clearly somewhere on this ship)
He’s probably late again
But we do have company of another sort
Oh She has a gun
And somehow none of that hits her
And of course that gets the attention
I’m honestly glad they didn’t go with miscommunication Causes fake stand up scenario
Even if this is faux Romeo and Juliet
Good job
Lots of jumping
Look Jedi
Good job nice guy
No wait That one guy had common sense
“I knew that was a bad idea,”
Mercy
That you didn’t show on the other guys
Who were far more hesitant
And you took out that one guy
Who didn’t do anything
Just wasn’t as vocal
Dicks
Jump The peashooter isn’t doing the job?
Jump
He tried
Power Thrust
Ana kin
“ There. they are!”
Bull shit
No way
he saw those guys
On all those Packages
Also ‘the i knew It was a bad Idea Guy Got New Friends
“Fire!”
Fuck
The bridge is out
“Jump to me,”
Try it with a little bit more disinterest
“ I’ll use the force”
Even she realizes it’s not that intense
“ You have to trust me,”
Good Luck
OMG
It looks like she just falls
Also Obi-wan’s in the back like it’s none of my business
Like dude came on a rescue mission And has become completely useless never helped once Complained the whole way there
Manages
“Got you,”
“ NICE CATCH,” Obi -Wan from the sidelines
10/10 Hilarious
“ I’ll fetch the droid,”
What??
No
This isn’t cute
Disgusting
“Oh the things you do to get me alone,”
KIDS don’t-
Ack-
Please no more smoopy-
nope
I’m putting it in the “bad” corner Till it stops trying to ship children
Bad Movie
That’s Not Cute
Obi-wan Sucks
Can’t even levitate A Droid
“Stop me please”
Poor Droid
Blast You’re Weak
“ That’s not good”
Yeah you’re weak
“Anakin I got separated from your droid,” Thank God
I’ll take care of it
Better “ We’ll meet you back at the Twilight”?
“ I overheard grievous,”
Annnnnd
“ They’re hyper-drive is nearly fixed,”
Soooo, He better get you back to the ship so we can start blasting it with Cannon balls again?
“ i’m already headed in that direction,”
Soooooo, don’t do it, Obi-wan?
Or have Anakin and take the extremely important senator And come back for you later?
“ i’ll make sure the hyperdrive stays off line,”
By shooting it with more cannon-balls?
Ha ha Ha ha ha
We’ll see about that
What?! Person who can do nothing!
Like seriously if they just go back to the ship-
That Jedi
“I’m getting you out of here,”
Good decisions
“I need you to help me find 3PO,”
How?
“ I know I know he does,”
Padme’s expression
“And i’ll be there soon,”
That’s almost adorable
Oh like that
‘Someone stop this contraption,”
Careful Words
Yeet
There We Go
Into those boxes
“ I suppose I did ask for that,”
Ha-he
That got a small giggle out of me
Stomping
Bait
Murderous Intent
Get Fucked Obi Wan
Really rolling out all the stops
Hahaha
“ Hello there,”
[Took a pause. a long break]
General Kenobi
“ kill him,”
Straight. To. The. Point.
More in line with the characterization we’ve seen up so far, not that much for conversation
Dude’s just rolling
There went the others
Bowling pins they are
Oh grievous has a gun
And hiding behind the enemy
Thought he sent both those guys flying
Apparently I was wrong
Must’ve Been a Third
Ha
Didn’t Work
Yeet
That poor Droid...
Spark*
That was impressive
Nah he ran around things
It really set up your forces for a brawl among them selves
“Argh,”
Dude, how insecure
“ Guard the hyperdrive,”
Oh yeah he did shit to it
Also sending basic level mooks to deal with it
Shooting Things
Again how did Anakin and Padme end up in the situation?
They were at the train station last
Now they’re at??
And have agroed every enemy
Who should be focusing on Obi-Wan because
That was their last order
Grievous has just completely ignored Anakin
Hiding
You aggroed Them!
Why are you calling Obi -Wan
“Come in Obi-wan,”
Get her to the shuttle
“ i’m afraid grievous is onto us,”
“We noticed,”
Hey you guys Aggroed those guys completely on your own don’t blame Grievous for this
“Ack,”
Those are Tanks
You’re peashooter isn’t going to do much
Also, Anakin shouldn’t be able to take them either
This should be a properly terrifying moment
“ We’ll meet you back on the twilight,”
Good plan
“Obi- Wan!”
Writers don’t screw this up
“Come In,”
His communicuff clearly got damaged
What’s wrong?!
They’re jamming all communication
No again it’s far more likely that his communicuff Got Damaged (Especially with Grievous listening in,”
Not everything is jammed communi cations Yeet, yeet Yeet
That should not work Those are tanks
Anakin is a lightweight
His skill set is unspecified
But he shouldn’t be able to cut more than butter with that knife
Light wieght clankers should pose a challenge
Due to the amount of energy
“That might buy us some time
Unlikely
I suppose you have a plan Yeah, Get to the escape pad
Follow Me
...To the escape pod
C3PO I do believe I’m lost
Seriously you haven’t found this guy
Enemy Territory
And all alone
You’re a service droid
Probably wouldn’t notice anything
“Ah,”
Dude, they’d probably just adopt you into the clan
“ I surrender,”
Again I really want to see the C3PO and battle droids conversation
(When not aware of the other side)
It’s a projector... R2 D2
“ you are a sight for old eyes,”
A nice interaction
“ Master Anakin sent you to find me,”
“ what kept you then?”
He does have a point
Dude got thrown off the train about an hour ago
R2′s just been messing with him
“ follow me,”
“ The general is demanding a status report,”
Oh some driod on droid interactions (without the general)
Nice
Is the hyperdrive re-paired Yet
From there?
“ i’ll give him the good news,”
This isn’t the escape pad
Did you take a wrong detour?
Also no one guarding the super important one panel repair
Just Light weight clankers
Also that’s not good news
(Especially considering it’s one panel)
Surprised this goes so well
Also; now there’s tanks
Surprised you think that peashooter can do anything ma’am
Like seriously should’ve grabbed a bigger gun
The droids have some
And you can’t tell me there hasn’t been artillery laying around this entire time
Yeet
That almost- Turned into murder This is why not going to the escape pods immediately was a bad idea
Again this should be a stressful fight
But turning your child soldier Into an all powerful can never lose child soldier
Is bullshit movie
Opened Door
“Ever since I’ve known you you’ve been playing with droids,”
Ack
“I used to put them together,”
Alright...
Now I only take them apart Child soldiering...
It sucks
So, where do we start
GETTING TO THE ESCAPE PAD!
Obi-Wan supposed to be here any minute!
With whole lot of bullshit!
Move!
First we need to get one of these droids so they don’t know we were here
No destroy the thing and go
They’ll figure it out in like five seconds
When they go to start the thing up!
Running is a good option
“I’m gonna hot wire this ship,”
How does this make anything better?
He’s already down and in kicking position
Everyone’s waiting for Amidala
You’re not helping, good sir!
(In fact I’m pretty sure you’d have to fix something To make it go,”
Secondly, This is a HUGE -ass ship
As a reason it has an electrical team
Squeezing two little wires
Isn’t going to do much
It requires continuous effort to different parts of the ship To make a dent
And I truly doubt such a large ship is going to have such a non-complicated Start-up compared to hotwiring a car
Point being; this shouldn’t work
Give Grievous a little surprise
Again if it’s anything less Then a bomb
Dude isn’t gonna have much trouble
And this is a waste of time
I’ll guess I’ll clean up the droids then
LITERally im possible
That’s a tank!
You carry light weaponry!
Back to the fleet
Plo Koon Is doing nothing
Having tea and cookies with Ahsoka
Our ships are in attack position
So... nothings changed
“Master Skywalker,”
No one else either
“No,”
Deadpanned
“ The droids are jamming our transmissions,”
(More likely reason for that on a -damaged ship)
But Ergh-
“We need to give him more time,”
Opinion!
“ i’m sure we can,”
I’ve been sitting on my ass-
[Plo’s Head Moves -Railway]
We’re back here again?
Obi-Wan should be at the station by now
Everything is behind him
Yeet
Yeet
Make it to the Coms center
Break Some Shit
Oof Those Poor Droids Good Pa rell els
Splat!
Obi won looking back-and-forth
Obi-Wan you are a Jedi master this shouldn’t be hard
Run
Tum ble
I was fully planning on him stacking it
Roof
Also, Obiwan
Stop fecking Around
Get to the place
Woof
How
Did you end up falling over?
Ironically Obi-Wan shows less emotion than Anakin
* Slashing the train*
Okay... what did I do
Snarky little shit
Could be snarkier
“That oughta do it,”
Ana -kin Doing Obi-wan’s Job
Also Oh shit is he plugging in the location of that supposed fight with master-
How’s the house cleaning going-
Im-
That dude made out of -metal
He is FIVE times your bodyweight!
HOW?
Done?
You MOVED a Tank??
HOW-
That’s-
What ever
* Guys coming in*
Oh yeah that’s a door
I guess repairs are finished
Or they went on lunch break
Prepared to charge up the hyperdrive
Right on it
“Roger, Roger,” -famous last words
Sparking
Driving
Are we seriously waiting on these two
“Are you quite sure the ship is in that direction?
He’s basically a GPS
That way looks potentially dangerous
All of them do
“Haz ardous,”
Better Example beeping irritatedly
“I know the whole place is dangerous,”
Thank you R2- D2
“ I suggest we stay here and let master Anakin find us,”
Bad idea
A better idea than anyone in the ‘let’s meet up in an undisclosed location’ came up with
Good idea
3PO
Fecking Irony
“Don’t just stand there,”
See?
“Let’s get back to the ship,”
Irony
Power up the engines R2
You know Obi-Wan’s likely going to screw up your shit right
*obi-Wan comes around the corner,*
Dude you have shit to screw up
Did you forget?
There shouldn’t be an escape pod for you
What
Hold the ship
No, you didn’t do anything...
Then again he could just cannonball it
How’s that-
Okay Very light bullshit
“ i’ll contact the fleet,”
It’s the most you’ve done this entire time
Focus On The chair
Do cking Clamp
There We Go
Off We Go
It’s still Burning
Grievous Off
Why?
He doesn’t know
Obi-Wan’s off the ship
Last saw him on the train...
(Not followed up on directly)
Flighters, Where I thought they all got destroyed?!
All batteries open fire
Again Plo Koon does not give a shit who dies
(Until sitting on his ass gets too boring)
Also this isn’t his fleet
They shouldn’t listen to him
(Especially after he got his last one killed)
More Shooting at the burning wreck
Turb ulence
And Obi-Wan still didn’t do his job
Guns
You can shoot back at any time
“ I wa-”
Obi-wan being completely useless
Anakin having too much emotion
“I got it,”
Shoo ting stuff
Somehow doesn’t go down immediately
Hit
“ She seems to know her way around,”
Gross
Hit Something
The Hyper Drive
-repaired
Also Obi-Wan didn’t fuck up shit
Dis appointed
Also it certainly as frick isn’t now
After they’ve been shooting
Should we retreat to friendly space?
If You can make there it with it in one piece (Which was the qualifications)
Engage the hyperdrive
With me not on it
“Secret base sector four,”
Interesting
“Prepare-”
Enthus iastic
“Yes, Sir,”
Fighters still chasing
Intense
“Nice Shoot,”
Gross
“Beginners luck,”
Beeping
“Pardin-”
“Hyperdrive is activating,”
Obi-Wan
“ Oh-shit Caught in a lie.”
“-what”
-They’re getting hit with cannonballs Anakin what did you do ?!
(What Did I order you to do?)
Coordinates are locked
“Hyperdrives engaging,”
Shit’s about to go-
Ar-
Sp- arking
Glitzy display Base
“ I think there’s a problem,”
“General I think there’s a problem with the hyperdrive,”
Yeah The ship got refired upon it’s probably re broken
Seriously
“ I thought the hyperdrive was fixed,”
And then it got shot again...
The navigate computer is heading a straight into the moon
What ??
Fools reset the Navi computer
“Quick,”
Tech Support
Dooku
Worst time to call
(Don’t think it could’ve gone more sideways)
Also good job Anakin You crash landed them on a planet with significantly larger surface area and resources that they can use to re-build
Aka you made things harder than they needed to be
Obi-Wan, what are you ordering this kid
Narrowed eyes
-No reset it
“General,”
Harsh
But I’m interested in where this is going
Since Grievous has had a lot of shit thrown at him
Doesn’t matter which side of enablers he still enabling
But I suppose over involved positivity Would be kind of a nice change for him
Over over involved negativity
Speeds off
“Trans -mission Has been cut,”
Intentionally
* also smart droid
“ We’re Gonna die
[Explosion]
How?!
Whelp Obi-Wan has to have a sit down talk with Anakin. about the ‘ Drive the ship into the moon,’ order
Also I realized (thanks to Obi-Wan) they know nothing about what just happened Grievous either decided to just end it
or they’re all dead
Obi-Wan
Dick move
“ I imagine you had something to do with that,”
WTF- orders
“ all part of the plan,”
Obi-Wan schooled Anakin in extraterrestrial terrorism
Cheering at least the ion cannon isn’t coming back
Nice shot
...So Destroy Malevolence
I have to say I really like this episode
Despite the plot stretched thin
There was a noticeable increase in the quality of animation
The child characters were good
The other characters were a lot more consistent And a lot smarter

"even though I want to write entire essays on The Will of the Empress, what a title, what a book" OP please don't leave me hanging like this, where is that essay, WotE is only one of my FAVORITE books of all time and I GOTTA KNOW
THE WILL OF THE EMPRESS IS ONE OF THE BEST TITLES IN THE HISTORY OF TITLES FIRST OF ALL SO JOT THAT DOWN.
Rarely is a title that just sounds cool ALSO integral to the book itself (obviously titles SHOULD BE but we all know how I feel about titles feel free to send me some for discussion I am not above ragging on bad to mediocre titles)(or don’t if you don’t want grouchy commentary on the state of YA titles especially)
Not only is the will of the empress an actual phase in the narrative, it is a common theme. People live and die by the will of Berenene and honestly I love that she isn’t painted as an irredeemable villain because she is demonstrably out of touch with what the vast majority of people need on an individual basis (or possibly out of touch with CARING about what they need on an individual basis) but extremely good at and willing to pursue what is good for her citizens as a collective. She repairs bridges. She builds schools and universities and libraries and hospitals. She taxes the shit out of every single one of her nobles to build these things for her common citizens. She actively works to keep her daughters, all of whom are born outside of marriage, as her heirs. She protects the women in her household and genuinely seems to care about Rizu, for instance, and Ishabal is the only person she unreservedly trusts.
She’s also completely blind to the privilege of her position and entirely sure that her way is the only right way, and she will leave you the individual to burn if it means the country works the way she thinks it needs to. Does she have good goals? Indisputably! Is she ruthless as hell? FUCK YES. Does she seem to think that all women have the same opportunity to fight and escape their captors or miserable situations that she does/did? Yeeeeaaaaah.
(look I will argue that Berenene does not have the legal right to do much with her feudal lords’ subjects, but the fact that she doesn’t see fit to at least work towards abolishing laws that actively hurt women is short sightedat best, and I don’t lean towards the best case scenario here. It smacks of Berenene thinking people who can’t manage every aspect of their lives themselves as weak, and that the weak don’t deserve her help. It’s not good, and I don’t like it, but I like that it’s used as an exploration of power and what it can do to people when unchecked)
Sandry ends up giving up her power over this specific area not because she doesn’t want power or like having authority (Sandry loves power and authority, fight me in the pit, she just likes using it to help people, which is another cool thing Tamora Pierce does), she gives it up because she realizes she isn’t best suited for this particular power and authority because she doesn’t care about this place or these people. We actually knew this already? Sandry’s first opinion about the world at large that we ever get to hear is that she doesn’t like her Namornese relatives and doesn’t want to live in Namorn. She likes Emelan. She’s useful in Emelan. She cares about Emelan.
Basically, Sandry realizes that if she keeps her power in Namorn, she’s exactly like her parents because she gives zero fucks about it. Sandry gives the fuck up. Sandry is, technically and eventually, beaten by the will of the empress, and Sandry… is happy about it?
I’m not sure I’m making a whole lot of sense here. Basically, The Will of the Empress is a perfect title because it perfectly encapsulates the book. Berenene and her will are the driving force behind the narrative. Sandry and Daja and Briar and Tris all have agency and all work within the story to do shit, but without Berenene none of it would be happening.
(I love Berenene as a character so much. SO MUCH.)
If this needs some clearing up please send follow up questions, my brain has been a mess lately.

would you rec tamora pierce’s stuff for adults? like it is good bc it’s good or is it good bc nostalgia? (aka should i read it?)
I absolutely would.
is my enjoyment of it probably at least colored by a bit of nostalgia? probably, but i also didn’t read these books until my late teens. they’re marketed as YA, and all of them follow a female protag. tamora is known for being one of the best in terms of representation next to the one dude whose name escapes me right now (fucking percy jackson author you know who i mean) and probably one of the first to do it (as in, before support of lgbt+/minority rep went more mainstream and became a bit more common)
the tortall universe is comprised of currently 3 different series (4 books), 2 shorter series (2 books), and i believe a fourth one is being written currently. chronologically:
the song of the lioness: focuses on alanna of trebond, a girl who masquerades as her twin brother so that she can become a page and train to be a knight in his place. deals with sexism, feminist themes, etc.
the immortals: focuses on daine surrasin(sp? sorry i don’t feel like looking it up lmao) who lost her parents in a bandit attack and joins with a caravan. she finds she has a particular type of magic that allows her to talk with animals, and like shit happens. iirc daine isn’t presented as white but it’s been a while since i read this series since tw: large age gap relationship. it’s presented in a way that’s not as creepy as it could be (daine is 18 by the time they get together) but like. the guy in the story has known her since she was 15-16 and he’s in his 30s. for me it was a dealbreaker so i couldn’t read it past that point, but the first 3 books of this are great regardless.
note: tamora has said she won’t include another relationship like this since it made some fans uncomfy. i believe she just drew from her own experiences as i think her husband was quite a bit older than her but the point is that she listened. if you decide to read tortall and want to skip this, you could just look at a summary. tamora does a good job of making her books accessible even to brand new readers, though obviously understanding references helps.
protector of the small: focuses on keladry of mindelan, the first girl to want to become a page following alanna. this series really ramps up the rep significantly as two side characters are involved in a lesbian relationship, kel speaks of lgbt relationships, and tamora herself has confirmed that kel is likely ace/aro.
other series include: beka cooper, trickster’s choice. also recently started series following daine’s husband’s earlier years before he met daine. first two are both great series in their own right but shorter. beka is sort of like a prequel lowkey cop/detective type novel. trickster’s choice follows one of alanna’s daughters. the husband books i couldn’t tell you as i don’t care that much about him lmao
the holy grail of tamora’s rep though goes to the emelan universe which is comprised of:
circle of magic (4 books), the circle opens (4), the circle reforged (currently 2 books last i heard), for a total of 10.
focuses on four main protags with found family trope: briar, daja, tris, and sandry. briar is an asian boy, daja is a dark-skinned black woman who is later revealed to be lesbian (through the cutest way ever too). their adoptive parents, lark and rosethorn, are both bisexual in a polyamorous relationship, though the poly part is only hinted at really. i believe tamora has also said it’s possible sandry may end up as ace but she hasn’t gotten to that point yet. there’s also multiple characters who are disabled, either upon first meeting them or later on in the series.
the circle series deals with a lot of prejudices such as racism, xenophobia, classism, mental health, and obviously lgbt issues as well, disability etc. it’s genuinely an amazing series that doesn’t get NEARLY enough attention. tw for the series for some darker concepts, such as murder, depictions of ptsd, plague, death, war etc, and (attempted) sexual assault - the last one is only in the 9th book (will of the empress) and implied/talked about very briefly before being WILDLY unsuccessful, but i thought it worth mentioning just in case.
bonus: the first 6? ish books of emelan universe have fully cast audiobooks with great actors. will of the empress is also fully cast and the acting in that one (especially by sandry) is phenomenal. so if you enjoy audiobooks as well i’d definitely check them out.
is it “high brow” adult fiction? no. it’s easily digestible as YA fiction tends to be, written so that teens can easily read it, but it does deal with heavier issues and tamora has been a pioneer of minority representation for literal decades.

I’m compiling a list of all my wips w/ summaries here to remind myself what all I should be working on and keep myself accountable - and if y’all wanna yell at me about them please do
(Also be warned there will be some spoilers in here cause I suck at non spoiler-y summaries)
Fanfics:
Dear Evan Hansen:
(Apprentice) Park Ranger Handsome part 16 (doesn’t even have a name yet I’m so sorry)
Evan and Connor’s first date!! They go to the orchard of course, and have more relationship conversation... and a picnic.
Fae Court AU
Prince Connor of the Winter Court falls in love with a human boy and acts on it, despite his parents having Rules against relationships with humans. The consequences are big but Connor and Evan weather them well.
Flash:
Soulmate AU (I’m thinking ‘Dream A Little Dream Of Me’ for series title)
A series of one-shots following the Arrowverse characters - with a bit of a focus on Team Flash and the Legends - as they find love and happiness , with some bumps along the way, in a world where you share dreams with your soulmate. Timeline is spread out from Stein and Clarissa’s first meeting to some point around mid canon.
endgame ships include Barry/Len, Hartley/Cisco, Wally/Jax, Sara/Ava, Nate/Ollie/Felicity/Lisa(it’ll make sense I promise), Iris/Caitlin/Shawna, and more
Role-reversal AU
In a world where Barry was kept strictly away from the file on his mother’s murder after he becomes a CSI he grows resentful and distrusting of law-enforcement and a little quicker to recognize that he can’t entirely fix the issues with the police from the inside. So when he wakes from a nine month coma with super speed his first thought is how much he can shove the police’s faces in the fact that the system isn’t perfect and needs to change... he becomes the world’s fastest thief - unbeatable. At least until he goes after a certain diamond at the same time as one Leonard Snart, who walks away from the encounter looking to the world like a hero and gets a sweet taste of positive press that he’s not all that eager to give up.
Harry Potter crossover
Snart and Rory go “backpacking across Europe” on a ridiculous challenge to steal one thing in each country. Their last stop is in England and they’ve set their sights on a suburb in Surrey... which leads them to noticing the treatment of the young nephew of their potential target. Being survivors of abuse themselves they decide to remove him from that environment... along with all of Vernon Dursley’s valuables. Raising a kid is hard, raising a magical kid while maintaining positions as master thieves? ...piece of cake...
Check Please:
Moving On
When Jack and Bitty go through a messy breakup their friends are torn and Bitty is uncertain about what to do, especially when he has to go back to Georgia - where he’s firmly in the closet - for summer break. He can’t talk to his family or his friends about all his conflicting feelings about what happened, so he somehow finds himself corresponding with the one person who he knows would understand - Jack’s other ex, Kent Parson. He also finds himself growing closer to the previous year’s freshmen on his college hockey team and the team’s new manager - especially when summer ends and they’re all handling the situation better than the rest of his friends - ie: behaving like nothing happened except that they’re immediately down to fight Jack at a moment’s notice.
The Umbrella Academy:
Ghost Dave (that’s what it’s called in my google docs but it’s definitely not gonna be the title of the final product)
Dave Katz has been haunting the surviving members of his unit for a couple decades when the story about the 43 women comes on the news; a story Dave had heard plenty about before he died from his lover, Klaus Hargreeves. In whose tellings of it he was one of the children born that day. He also had claimed a few times to be from the future so Dave was fairly willing to take this as proof he was telling the truth. Immediately Dave seeks out Reginald Hargreeves and the 7 of the children he adopted. Over the next 29 years Dave follows the young Klaus around, giving him advice and unconditional friendship and protection from the other ghosts the poor kid could see.
Circle Of Magic crossover
When Tris finds herself dropping out of some kind of portal in a strange land it doesn’t take her long to figure out that some mage had decided to get rid of her - and possibly her siblings - by banishing her to another world, one with advanced technology but not much by way of magic - if one didn’t count the six super-powered siblings she appeared in the middle of. At the same time, but also not, Tris’s adopted sister Sandry wound up smack dab in the center of a group calling themself The Commission who’re very interested in adding her to their ranks, she joins up but maintains suspicion. Daja, the third sister, follows a pair of assassins. And their one brother, Briar, falls into the Vietnam War alongside one freshly tortured Klaus Hargreeves. They all find their way back together eventually - with much fewer casualties than if they hadn’t been there
Harry Potter crossover 1
When an eighteen-year-old Klaus Hargreeves gets bored of being lookout on a mission in London and wanders into the bar across the street he isn’t expecting to find a best friend, but that’s exactly what happens. Lily Evans is a couple months into a break-up and still tired of her ex and his idiocy, especially after his most recent letter - a pile of stupid big enough to send her straight to her local bar. The two hit it off instantly via complaining about anything and everything and egging each other into doing the most ridiculous but fun things. Their night of fun turns sour when Klaus finds out his brother Ben died during the mission and at least one of his siblings blame him. Lily takes the broken boy back to her flat and let’s him stay with her until his visa to stay in England runs out. Thirteen years later the apocalypse is interrupted by a tired ex-professor bringing life changing news - Lily was pregnant when Klaus left England(they’d slept together a handful of times but were never more than friends with benefits), also Lily and her husband(the idiot ex who apologized and changed his behavior, Klaus was at their wedding) are dead and Klaus and Lily’s son was placed with his aunt Petunia(who Klaus has met and knows the boy never should’ve been put with) because only five people besides Lily and James knew who Harry’s father really was and the only one capable of doing anything about it had to find the wandering junkie first. Klaus handles all this about as well as a powerful veteran with a traumatic childhood can - fighting tooth and nail for custody and then raising the boy the best he can with help from his siblings and robot mom and shoving his son’s happiness and safety in the faces of everyone who did the boy wrong
Harry Potter crossover 2
Not long after the war ends Harry finds that he can’t stand staying in magical Britain any longer, so he takes his godson and moves to America. Six years later one of the kids who live across the street sneaks out his window, wearing only pjs despite the heavy snow. Harry finds himself staying up waiting for the boy to return to their street and making some hot cocoa - which he offers to the boy as soon as he sees him. It quickly becomes a Thing(tm); Klaus will sneak out his window in the middle of the night, go for a walk, and eventually wind up having hot cocoa in Harry’s kitchen. They form a strange friendship, one where Klaus has someone he knows he can go to when everything becomes too much - even if that means crawling through Harry’s window, collapsing on his floor in tears, and falling asleep on his couch, waking up just in time to get home before his absence is noticed. Three more years have passed when Harry and Teddy are idly watching tv and Harry sees a very familiar face as Reginald Hargreeves introduces ‘the inaugural class of the Umbrella Academy.’ When Klaus comes over that night Harry asks how much choice Hargreeves gave him and his siblings in their ‘heroics’. After some thought Klaus remembers how his brother Ben hadn’t wanted anything to do with what happened at the bank but was made to participate anyway. He answers honestly: they weren’t really given any. Thus begins Harry’s campaign to get custody for the kids from Hargreeves.
Original Works:
Four Elements Universe(a collection of stories set along one timeline - very far apart and with no overarching plot, just a shared world):
Sisa:
A secluded young king sneaks out of his castle and gets a job under a false identity in hope for friendship, then gives everything up to help his new friends and the rest of his people when he realizes the extent of his adviser’s corruption. Around the same time, a teenage master thief is hired to steal a specific box from the castle - and then to help another thief break her friend out of the castle dungeon - and uncovers several major secrets that might just change the fate of the kingdom.
Kings:
Bandit King Vakhtang’s life is irrevocably changed when he agrees to lend his men to a rebellion for a hefty amount of gold. Over time he finds himself growing fond of the boy prophesied to be the next king and learning just as much from his new employer about letting himself care and open up as he’s teaching the boy how to protect himself. (His best friend and lover is very proud of this growth and kinda wants to adopt the kid)
The Completely Unrelated Adventures Of Four People Who Had Nothing To Do With Each Other Beforehand:
Four teenagers in rural Texas follow a cipher they found in an old tome and discover that all four of them have magical abilities, and that their town may not be as average as they’d believed. As they delve deeper in this new world they uncover two different secret organizations and find themselves caught in the middle of a dangerous conflict over a powerful artifact - that may or may not be the kid sister of one of them.
Mythicals:
Six kids around the world each find objects - artifacts - that grant them magical transformations and abilities. Seven years later all six of them end up at the same prestigious performing arts school in New York. When they discover that they all have these artifacts and powers - and that New York and possibly the world is in danger - they team up to protect everyone else, and quickly become close friends. Though one of them has a secret that could drastically change how the others view them... and possibly risk the fate of the human race.
Eternity And Forever(this one does have an overarching plot):
Eternity Of Forever:
Back in the early years of humanity a young man goes up a mountain for his Trials of Adulthood - a series of three trials set to test a person on the traits of whichever three gods they’ve been assigned to serve - unfortunately for this boy he’s been chosen for the gods of empathy, loyalty, and love... three traits that do not come easily to him. In his desperation to pass his trials he cheats the system and gets caught. As punishment he’s cursed to live forever just on the cusp of adulthood but never reaching it, the only way to break his curse is to prove - with no possibility of dishonesty - that he’s capable of the three traits. Over the next few millennia he gets caught up in a war for the fate of all life on earth, and also somewhat adopts a maybe-alien and falls in love with a time traveler.
Throughout Eternity:
At some unknown point in the future all that’s left of the human race is a refugee colony on an island floating above the desolate remains of our planet. It’s into this that Quinton is born. But when it’s discovered that he can travel through time with just a thought he’s trained for a very important mission: to go back in time and stop the apocalypse. Shortly into his mission he meets an immortal teenager who claims to have met Quinton’s future self and who offers to help, telling him that first thing he should do is gather a team to help him - he even provides names and years. This little team becomes like a second family to Quinton, especially the pretend-aloof immortal.
Forever And After:
After the death of the closest thing he ever had to a father, Slythus finds himself applying to the superhero school the immortal had founded - despite knowing that even if he were accepted into the student body he’d never be accepted by the student body. Somehow he manages to get in... and even more impossible; manages to make friends. But even as he learns how to be good, his past is lurking on the edges of his new life and quickly becoming impossible to ignore - figuratively and literally.
Shadow Warriors:
After the dragon Svartr gets cursed protecting a village from invaders they offer their children to be trained by him - to take care of him as his condition worsens. Those selected and taught by him become known as the Shadow Warriors. Alexir was born several generations after the tradition began of sending every twelve-year-old up Svartr’s mountain for the selection and she never expected to be chosen, being much more focused on intellectual growth than physical, so when it happens it comes as a bit of a shock. She struggles to keep up with her peers in most of the lessons but refuses to give in, pushing herself to reach their level while also learning the complexities of friendship from them all.
Consequences(originally titled ‘Consequences of War’ until I realized it’s more about just consequences for actions in general - like: don’t piss off the powerful magical Being hiding out in the abandoned building):
After deliberately pissing off what they believed to be a ghost - or a false rumor more likely - a college aged idiot ends up being banished into a strange world... with a distinct change in biology(mostly in the area of hormones and primary sex characteristics). As they travel this new world in search of a way home - and back into their original form - they learn new things about themself and make interesting new friends. They find themself questioning whether they actually want their ‘old body’ back and then, when they begin to fall in love, whether they really want to return to their old world.

Reccing Ball
Whilst I’m on the fic rec train, I thought it might be nice to supply some rare pairings. Goldenlake (and the Dancing Dove before it!) has always been characterised by its authors’, er, adventurous shipping. I tend to search AO3 by pairings, and this means missing some fics, so if you’re anything like me... here are some (hidden?) gems from Goldenlake’s alumni! All fics are complete. Paragons of Knightly Virtue by Lisafer. Affection blossoms where it's least expected in the world of knight training. Warnings for attractions between an adult and teenager (Myles/Wyldon). Winner of ‘That Should’ve Squicked Me But It Didn’t’ (no, really). After this, I’m convinced there’s nothing @lisafer can’t do. She’s the queen of unconventional pairings, and makes me not only believe but love whatever she writes. (She’s also written Wyldon/Thayet and Buri/Numair if either of those are more to your fancy!)
The Feeling Is Mutual by rain_sleet_snow. Buri and Wyldon are a disaster waiting to happen that never quite happens (Buri/Wyldon). Currently converting me to Alanna/Delia, @rain-sleet-snow has an unparalleled knack with characters and Buri is my cantankerous favourite (also, keep an eye on that Alanna/Delia!).
Somewhere Away From War by Rachy. Briar and Kel meet in the Yamani Islands, and romance ensues (Briar/Kel). The best thing about fanfiction is a flexibility canon would never allow, and Rachy takes excellent advantage.
Foreign Travel by Kit. Wyldon, resident expert, is sent to Carthak. Kalasin, resident Empress, is a good deal changed by her position (Kalasin/Wyldon). I absolutely love what Kit can do with the written word - she’s a master of it.
Sixty-Seven Years by kitsunerei88. He was younger, and even though Kel had broken many taboos on the way to knighthood, somehow this one was the wall (Kel/Alan II). Peaceful and sweet - unusual but welcome qualities in peculiar pairings!
Answers by ivyspinners. When one's former lover is a god, there are certain secrets that can be learnt (Kyprioth/Eleni). One of those fics I feel tempted to make into my personal headcanon.
Lonely Lady by Tamari. Wyldon tries to fall in love (Wyldon/Cythera). Tamari has a lovely, gentle style of writing, and there’s a wistful possibility in this fic.
Love by Dedicate Kiwicrocus (cranky__crocus). Years ago, Tris would never have comprehended being in love (Tris/Briar/Sandry/Daja). If you don’t know what SMACKDOWN is, you’re probably better off, but this is one of the gems from all the chaos!
All these link to AO3, so you may leave your appreciation via kudos or comment as you see fit, but if this has just whet your appetite for more, Goldenlake’s Peculiar Pairings ficathon archive is here. Also, SMACKDOWN fic is sorted by pairing.
