d'you know what? it's TIME. Time for what? you ask. Well, my lovelies, it is time for me to finally commit to the internet the theory I've had for twenty years, since I spent the last three evenings watching the Extended Editions at the cinema and am finally possessed of the executive function to do something about it. You guys, I am convinced that Elladan, Elrohir and Glorfindel are in Return of the King, and here's why.

Firstly, the reforging the sword scene (for which several people very kindly indulged me last Innumerable Stars when I nominated 'the twins are the smiths who reforge the sword' as a worldbuilding tag):

Look (at 1:48), there's two of them, you can't clearly see both faces (so they might be identical, there's no proof otherwise), and I'm convinced the one whose face we can see is Jason Secto, who also played Orophin. This is significant because he's there in the coronation scene, and he's there twice. Look:

At 2:25, there he is on the right of the screen, at Arwen's left shoulder. Then at 2:52 he's behind her right shoulder and he has had no opportunity to move. The only explanation is that there's two of him. HAS to be the twins. (there are also two other, non-identical dark-haired Elves over Legolas' right shoulder just before Arwen appears, one of whom bears a passing resemblance to Jason Secto but isn't him, and is in the right position to be a placeholder for his second appearance, so I maintain my point. :D )

(as an aside, because I've seen some speculation that the twins are fraternal and therefore not identical, and so could be any of the Elves in that scene: while Tolkien doesn't use the word 'identical', the description of them in 'The Passing of the Grey Company' in The Return of the King is pretty unequivocal: "...two tall men, neither young nor old. So much alike were they, the sons of Elrond, that few could tell them apart; dark-haired, grey-eyed, and their faces elven-fair, clad alike in bright mail beneath cloaks of silver-grey.")

Meanwhile, also at 2:25 on the left of the screen, I am well aware that is Jarl Benzon who was on a trading card as Glorfindel (and is also seen walking ahead of Arwen's horse in the leaving-for-the-Grey-Havens scene), but I see you your Jarl Benzon and I raise you this incredibly smug-looking fucker behind Elrond's right shoulder:

This is Sandro Kopp, and I contend that there is nobody else that he could be than Mr I-Told-You-So-Not-By-The-Hand-Of-Man-I-Said-And-I-Was-RIGHT.

Happy Birthday Tilda Swinton!

Tilda Swinton’s partner made the Rosenthaler’s art for The French Dispatch.

Along with his gifted assistants Sian Smith and Edith Baudrand, Kopp relocated his studio to the abandoned paper mills in the French town of Angoulême to work on the paintings amid the frenetic atmosphere of the film shoot. Here, with the input of Anderson, he created Rosenthaler’s entire oeuvre, drawing on influences such as Frank Auerbach, Willem de Kooning, and Francis Bacon while retaining a distinct style capable of acting as the catalyst for a radical rethinking of painting itself.

The second-round action in the Helsinki Challenger the other day continued with Joao Fonseca, who previously nailed his first-round match against lucky loser Jelle Sels 6-2, 6-3 in an almost flawless performance, taking on Jan Choinski, who defeated qualifier Sandro Kopp 6-2, 6-1 in another solid performance. This was a notable rematch from the first round of Estoril (250), where the latter dug deep to win the said match in three sets, but this chaos would only require either of them to put the ball in play, specifically as things got more physical in this match.

J. Fonseca kicked off the match with a forehand down-the-line winner as he capitalized on J. Choinski's previous errors before breaking early to 1-0, consolidating to 2-0 right after. Somehow, his fourth-shot forehand winners created his latest break point somewhere in the next game before he doubled his break advantage to 3-0. Subsequently, the Brazilian strengthened his position with a service game hold to 4-0.

Somehow, J. Fonseca continued his dominance as he found the court, noticeably firing another fourth-shot winner to triple his break lead (5-0), thus earning him the opportunity to serve for the first-set bagel. Without any further hesitation, he fired a backhand pass to create his set point after minimizing the deficit when J. Choinski struck back, ultimately taking the first set 6-0 to assert his dominance in this match.

Artist research: Sandro Kopp

Sandro Kopp is a German artist who graduated with a degree in fine art and English. He is most famous for his beautiful portraits, in particular his eye portraits. I really love these portraits because of the style of painting, and the patterns he creates in the iris. I was inspired by this to create my own collection of eye portraits of friends and family.

This is an interesting ask. Thank you for sending it in. Nothing I love more than a celebrity research project. 😉

One relationship that is the stuff of twisted-soap-opera legend for sure is that of Tilda Swinton and her boyfriend Sandro Kopp.

They met on a film set when he 24 and she was 43. That's a nineteen-year spread between them. However, at the time, she was in a relationship with Scottish playwright John Byrne, who was older than her by 21 years, making him 64. So, yes, she left her then-boyfriend for someone 40 years his junior.

That's not all. John was legally married during his entire fifteen-year relationship with Tilda to a woman he met while in art school. They were married for 50 years before finally divorcing in 2014. John is also the product of an incestuous affair between his mother and his grandfather. That's still not all. Tilda, her boyfriend Sandro, her ex John, and the twins she shares with John, all lived under one roof together in Scotland as recently as in 2015.
