Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Ceiling

In 1508 CE the Pope commissioned the celebrated Florentine sculptor and painter Michelangelo (1475-1564 CE) to paint scenes on the ceiling of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel. The walls of the chapel had already received decoration from some of the greatest of Renaissance artists, but in four years of toil, Michelangelo would outshine them all with his ambition and technical skill, producing one of the defining works of Western art of any century. The multi-panelled ceiling shows the story of Genesis from the Creation to Noah and the Great Flood. Essentially, the scenes show the creation of humanity, its fall from grace, and ultimate redemption.

The Commission

The Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Palace complex in Rome was commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV (r. 1474-1481 CE). The building was only completed c. 1481 CE but the development of a massive crack in the ceiling in 1504 CE required a repair job that also offered an opportunity to add yet more artwork to an already impressive art-packed interior. What was required was a work to match the excellence of the wall frescoes showing scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and Moses, which had been created by such masters as Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510 CE) and Pietro Perugino (c. 1450-1523 CE). One man then stood above all others in the art world, an artist already celebrated for his paintings and sculpture, especially for his massive 1504 CE statue of David, which now stood in the open air of his hometown Florence. This man was Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti, and Pope Julius II (r. 1503-1513 CE) was determined to get him for the job.

Inside-out galaxy growth observed in the early universe

Astronomers have used the NASA/ESA James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to observe the ‘inside-out’ growth of a galaxy in the early universe, only 700 million years after the Big Bang.

This galaxy is one hundred times smaller than the Milky Way, but is surprisingly mature for so early in the universe. Like a large city, this galaxy has a dense collection of stars at its core but becomes less dense in the galactic ‘suburbs’. And like a large city, this galaxy is starting to sprawl, with star formation accelerating in the outskirts.

This is the earliest-ever detection of inside-out galactic growth. Until Webb, it had not been possible to study galaxy growth so early in the universe’s history. Although the images obtained with Webb represent a snapshot in time, the researchers, led by the University of Cambridge, say that studying similar galaxies could help us understand how they transform from clouds of gas into the complex structures we observe today. The results are reported in the journal Nature Astronomy.

“The question of how galaxies evolve over cosmic time is an important one in astrophysics,” said co-lead author Dr Sandro Tacchella from Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. “We’ve had lots of excellent data for the last ten million years and for galaxies in our corner of the universe, but now with Webb, we can get observational data from billions of years back in time, probing the first billion years of cosmic history, which opens up all kinds of new questions.”

The galaxies we observe today grow via two main mechanisms: either they pull in, or accrete, gas to form new stars, or they grow by merging with smaller galaxies. Whether different mechanisms were at work in the early universe is an open question which astronomers are hoping to address with Webb.

“You expect galaxies to start small as gas clouds collapse under their own gravity, forming very dense cores of stars and possibly black holes,” said Tacchella. “As the galaxy grows and star formation increases, it’s sort of like a spinning figure skater: as the skater pulls in their arms, they gather momentum, and they spin faster and faster. Galaxies are somewhat similar, with gas accreting later from larger and larger distances spinning the galaxy up, which is why they often form spiral or disc shapes.”

This galaxy, observed as part of the JADES (JWST Advanced Extragalactic Survey) collaboration, is actively forming stars in the early universe. It has a highly dense core, which despite its relatively young age, is of a similar density to present-day massive elliptical galaxies, which have 1000 times more stars. Most of the star formation is happening further away from the core, with a star-forming ‘clump’ even further out.

The star formation activity is strongly rising toward the outskirts, as the star formation spreads out and the galaxy grows in size. This type of growth had been predicted with theoretical models, but with Webb, it is now possible to observe it.

“One of the many reasons that Webb is so transformational to us as astronomers is that we’re now able to observe what had previously been predicted through modelling,” said co-author William Baker, a PhD student at the Cavendish. “It’s like being able to check your homework.”

Using Webb, the researchers extracted information from the light emitted by the galaxy at different wavelengths, which they then used to estimate the number of younger stars versus older stars, which is converted into an estimate of the stellar mass and star formation rate.

Because the galaxy is so compact, the individual images of the galaxy were ‘forward modelled’ to take into account instrumental effects. By using stellar population modelling that includes prescriptions for gas emission and dust absorption, the researchers found older stars in the core, while the surrounding disc component is undergoing very active star formation. This galaxy doubles its stellar mass in the outskirts roughly every 10 million years, which is very rapid: the Milky Way galaxy doubles its mass only every 10 billion years.

The density of the galactic core, as well as the high star formation rate, suggest that this young galaxy is rich with the gas it needs to form new stars, which may reflect different conditions in the early universe.

“Of course, this is only one galaxy, so we need to know what other galaxies at the time were doing,” said Tacchella. “Were all galaxies like this one? We’re now analysing similar data from other galaxies. By looking at different galaxies across cosmic time, we may be able to reconstruct the growth cycle and demonstrate how galaxies grow to their eventual size today.”

Day eleven July 10

Today we go to Florence. We walk through the Accademia Gallery and see Michael Angelo’s deliberately incomplete statue collection, The Prisoners 1519-1534 and, of course, the statue of David 1501-1504. Here we also see Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Woman 1579-1583, in figura serpentinata style. For lunch we go to a famous sandwich shop, All’Antico Vinaio, which is so popular, they have four locations on the same street, each equivalent in quality and each with a line out the door; on our sandwiches, we both opt for pistachio cream; we share a delightful Italian orange soda. We go to the Uffizi Gallery and see various artwork and sculptures; most notably The Birth of Venus 1486 and Primavera 1482 by Sandro Botticelli; Leonardo Da Vinci’s unfinished Adoration of the Magi 1481, Annunciation ~1473 and The Baptism of Christ ~1475. We see the (outside only) Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore, and, naturally, the Duomo 1296-1436; it is as grandiose as one can imagine. We window shop. We go to Venchi for gelato, which has an entire wall of flowing chocolate; we note their product is not covered- to patronize this gelateria would be a divergence from our rule; it is a delicious rebellion. Florence is crowded, the Pigeons have no fear of people and the day has been hot; we return to our B&B and sip crema di meloncello. I spot a Moorish Gecko scaling the stone patio wall. I think we are both quite homesick. (It is impossible to list the plethora of art and artists displayed at each gallery during our time in Florence; all that went unmentioned were no less important and beautiful.)

“What about a new nickname?” He flops down on the bed and you crawl up the mattress to meet him. Touch still careful, Dami runs a hand along your back and over to your hip. His gaze stays fixed in that region for several seconds, so you answer to distract him.

“I hadn’t thought about a replacement to be honest.”

“We don’t have to think of one,” he assures.

“No, no, I like it during…when I’m feeling a certain way. It sounds more natural than my name.” He could also just address you with the customary title “omega,” but that felt wrong too. Not to mention that adhering to customs was the antithesis of your personal philosophy. You didn’t want to be alpha and omega as society dictated, but instead Dami and something. 

“In Italian, are there pet names?”

“Oh my god, so many. There's…leprotta, topolina, pulcina.” You could listen to Damiano pronounce his R’s and T’s all day.

“What do those mean?” 

“Leprotta is bunny. Topolina means little mouse and pulcina means, um, chick.” You shake your head with an expression of displeasure. “Too cutesy?”

“Definitely.” 

“Well, my grandmother calls Sandro orsetto and me tigrotto which means little bear and little tiger.” Those names make you perk up before the reality of the association sets in.

“Won’t you think of your grandmother then?” Damiano makes a face of disgust. “Yeah, exactly. I like those though.”

“Piccola just means little one.” You ponder on that diminutive for a moment. It could only be used in Italian and the possibility of him saying it in front of another person makes you preemptively anxious. 

“Maybe…”

“That’s also pretty cutesy. Ah, okay, there's leoncina and lupina. Little lion, or I guess little lioness, and little wolf. Yeah?” You watch Dami’s expression change to one of excitement as he speaks. The both of you can feel those fit better.

“So in English that’d be cub or, um…”

“Pup.” Pup was a feeling that always landed you in headspace. It was a word you associated with submission, but not submission for the sake of it. To be Damiano’s pup was to be under his protection, to be safe, carefree. Pups weren’t expected to say and do the right thing. Pups were still learning. Everybody knew that a pup couldn't guard itself, couldn’t survive by itself.

“So you’re my pup then?” You nod and melt onto Dami’s chest. “You’re my little wolf. My little, baby wolf.” The throaty whine you omit is just an effort to externalize the swell of internal pressure. For the same reason your feet flex and hands strangle the pillow under Damiano’s head.

“I feel like your pup,” you confess.

“I can tell. You’re squirming around like a puppy.”

Hi! So, it’s Christmas Eve and the big day is almost here!

The image I’m sharing with you today is my Madonna with Infant Jesus after Sandro Botticelli 

I’m a big Botticelli fan and when in September I saw his painting of Mary and Jesus at Piazza Colona in Rome (where Steve and I celebrated marrying 20 years ago), I knew I’d paint my own version for this Christmas!

My word of the day is: INSPIRATION

And my idea is:

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.” (Pablo Picasso)

That’s something I definitely believe in! The more I work at my art, at seeing better, the more I see the beauty all around me and find my inspiration!

I hope we all have a few good days of R&R in the week to come.

Brazilian banks see weaker 2025 for real estate loan

Higher interest rate, funding restrictions expected to slow sector; banks call for regulatory changes

The real estate loan market has remained robust and is expected to end the year with record numbers. However, banks anticipate a slowdown in 2025 as the rising Selic policy interest rate and funding restrictions begin to affect supply. Loan interest rates are climbing, and a decline—once expected by the end of the year—may take longer to materialize.

The contraction in real estate loans is linked to a known issue: increased withdrawals from savings accounts. This situation was exacerbated this year by rising interest rates and changes in the rules for issuing Real Estate Credit Bills (LCIs), which extended the grace period and raised funding costs, Sandro Gamba, president of the Brazilian Association of Real Estate Credit and Savings Entities (ABECIP), told Valor.

“It won’t be in November or December, but by the first quarter of 2025, there will be a reduction in real estate loans,” Mr. Gamba said. “The current moment is positive, but considering the rise in the long-term interest curve [future interest rates], maintaining this high level of lending at rates the market has absorbed is very difficult to sustain.”

This marks a reversal in a sector that has remained very strong. Until September, loans funded by savings accounts (SBPE) totaled R$136 billion, a 19% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Financing with funds from the FGTS rose by 47%, reaching R$99 billion in the same timeframe. Considering both savings and FGTS, the total amount is expected to approach R$300 billion, according to Mr. Gamba, surpassing other positive years for the market, such as 2021.
