More than half a million people call Albuquerque, New Mexico, home. But you’d be hard-pressed to notice—except maybe in the region’s numerous Mexican restaurants that are world-famous for their fiery chile-based dishes. Given the metropolitan area’s sprawl, bordered only by the rugged (and stunning) Sandia–Manzano Mountains, there’s plenty of breathing room. Even better: More than two-thirds of New Mexico’s land is protected, which means this isn’t likely to change any time soon.

If you’re ever in Albuquerque, Bugs Bunny says, “Turn left.”
I just got tagged in a post about who would you like to meet in real life of your internet friends. I have done this successfully before and it’s a wonderful experience. So I say, for any of my Tumblr friends, if you want to plan a trip to Albuquerque, I’m here.
I’ve been in Albuquerque for almost 25 years (Yeesh, where did the time go?!) and I am proud to show off my adopted home and state to travelers. I live in the Mile High District of the city. Yes, Denver isn’t the only city to claim that distinction. The city ranges from the Rio Grande River, which divides the city, up to the foothills of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. We host the International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta every year in October, which is something most people have heard of and we have tons of culture all around us.
Santa Fe, the City Different, is only 50 miles away. Los Alamos is 100 miles. There are several Pueblo Indian sites within a short drive and did I mention MOUNTAINS!? We have mild winters and hot summers and the air is a wee bit thin here but it’s not impossible to get used to.
The Sandia Mountains make the Eastern boarder of the city and rise to just under 11,000 feet. The word Sandia is Native for Watermelon since they look like a watermelon slice at sunset. Travelers can take the tram to the top of the crest or drive up the backside of the mountain to a look out, restaurant, hiking trails and the top of the ski area. The gap between the Sandia and Manzano ranges is the East-West pass through on good old Route 66. Yes, get your kicks on Rt 66!
Albuquerque and surrounding areas have 600,000 people, a major metropolis in the desert. We have several museums, theatres, and all kinds of other attractions and shopping. The cultural diversity alone is amazing.
If anyone wanted to come for a visit, E and I would be happy to host any friends. The house E has made an offer on would have 2 extra bedrooms and it would be our pleasure to host anyone wanting to visit. Just remember, if you run into Bugs Bunny, he thinks he should have taken a left turn at Albuqwerkkey!

Manzanita Mountain Majesty: Cedro Peak
Since moving to the East Mountains, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring my local trails on weekends when we don’t go out of town. The Manzanita Trail System, which caters to mountain bikers, ATVs, and hikers, sprawls out across the small range connecting the Sandia Mountains and the Manzano Mountains. From almost anywhere in the area, Cedro Peak looms overhead with its summit-top radio tower glistening in the New Mexican sun. Today, that was my goal.
Since I began exploring the area in January, Cedro has beckoned from the horizon of every single trail. There is a road that loops to the top, passing by Cedro Group Campground on the way up, but why do it the easy way?
For months, I’ve been eyeballing a few straight-as-an-arrow, ~10 foot wide cleared paths that stretch for miles and miles like spokes out of the peak of the mountain. They’re clearly visible on Google Maps, but I didn’t really know what they were. I parked at the Coyote Trailhead off of 337 and headed down Forest Service Road 462. Before long, I came across the cleared path and turned right.
After traveling a ways down this clearing, I was able to tell that the clearing was intended for access to a power-line of some sort that has long since been removed. Only flat topped stumps of telephone poles remained every so often through the middle of the path.
While from some angles it looks like a clear shot to the peak, there are multiple false summits and a bunch of net elevation gain and loss before reaching the peak.
The trail is mostly very steep, as it was not graded or created for hiking from what I can tell.
The trail does meet up with Delbert’s trail for a small stretch, providing a nice stretch for easy walking. After leaving the Delbert’s trail at a curve, the path appears impossible due to a 15-20 ft. rock cliff visible ahead. Don’t worry, the trail jogs to the left in the trees and there is an easy bypass around it.
At the top, enjoy the views of Tijeras. Continue up to an opening in the fence and join the road up to the radio towers. There are views on all sides!
The route back down is steep, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Just keep an eye out for loose rock and yucca. Long pants are recommended since you are mostly hiking off trail.
Once you meet back up with Forest Road 462, take a left and enjoy a quick jaunt back to the Coyote TH Parking Lot. You can extend your hike a little by jumping on the Chamisoso Trail, which you’ll pass over just before reaching 462.
All said and done, this route to Cedro Peak’s summit is 2.5 mi each way. I enjoyed off trail hiking, big views of the East side of the Sandias, and even a seashell embedded in a rock!

Minority residents target zoning rules in civil rights claim
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M./April 11, 2018 (AP)(STLRealEstate.News) — Zoning laws in New Mexico’s largest city are discriminatory and leading to the erosion of one of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods in Albuquerque, a group of residents alleged Wednesday as they asked federal housing authorities to launch an investigation. The Historic Neighborhood Alliance and the Martineztown Working Group in a civil rights complaint said Martineztown lacks the zoning protections that the city has instituted for more affluent and less diverse neighborhoods.
Martineztown was settled around the time the United States acquired the land from Mexico in the Mexican-American War in 1846. The community just east of the Rio Grande and north of what is now downtown Albuquerque was known as a paraje, or stopping off point along major trade routes that linked the river valley with the plains east of the Sandia Mountains.
Historic adobe homes still line the streets of Martineztown, and minorities make up more than 70 percent of its mostly low-income population.
Diana Dorn-Jones with the Historic Neighborhood Alliance said the city has for decades allowed the neighborhood to be destroyed by industrial encroachment.
“The residents of Martineztown are fighting to have a voice in the zoning process because it can save this culturally-rich neighborhood,” she said in a statement.
Alicia Manzano, a spokeswoman for Mayor Tim Keller, said the mayor is concerned about historical equity issues in underserved neighborhoods. She said the mayor’s office is encouraging all sides to work together to resolve concerns in a way that doesn’t jeopardize critical funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
According to the complaint, the city in the 1950s zoned the area for commerce and light manufacturing. The new zoning attracted manufacturing businesses, open storage and warehousing.
Critics contend the encouragement of commercial and industrial development sparked the deterioration of what made the neighborhood unique.
By 1976, the acequia — or traditional irrigation system — that once fed the community’s agricultural lands was filled.
In addition to failing to zone Martineztown as residential, the complaint states that the city did not protect the neighborhood’s historic resources and that led to the deterioration of many older buildings and the erection of inappropriate land uses and modern architectural styles.
The residents acknowledged that while it’s impossible to completely remedy what they call decades of mistreatment, there are steps the city can take to build a better future for Martineztown.
They are requesting federal housing officials work with the city to change the zoning map to accurately reflect actual land uses, including zoning single-family homes that are part of the community’s historic character as residential and create a buffer between homes and industrial uses.
They’re also asking for an advisory committee to be created and a historic zone to be established that would restrict new construction and retrofits to ensure they complement the existing character of Martineztown.
