Spanish naval ensign of the warship the 'San Ildefonso' which was captured by the 'Defence' at the Battle of Trafalgar, on display for photography in 1962, draped over the parapet of the Queen’s House, Greenwich.
Spanish ensign captured with their warship, 'San Ildefonso', 74 guns, by the 'Defence' at Trafalgar. It was hung in the crossing of St Paul's Cathedral during Nelson's funeral service on 9 Jan 1806 and was presented to Greenwich Hospital for display in the former Royal Naval Museum in the Royal Naval College at Greenwich by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's in 1907. It passed to the NMM with much of the rest of that collection in 1936. This design of ensign was in use from 1785 to 1931. The field is divided into three horizontal stripes; red, yellow, red. On an applied patch in the central stripe is an oval containing the arms of Castile (a yellow/gold castle on a red field) and Leon (a white field with a red lion rampant ), a crown above. The arms appear the have been printed or stencilled. Inscribed on the hoist in ink: 'SAN ELDEFONSO'.

Kaire, Castor and Polydeukes! ⚡
Saviors of storm-wracked ships, tamers of horses, and protectors of travelers, the Dioskouroi (Divine Twins) appear to sailors during storms in the guise of St. Elmo's fire--an electrical discharge which creates a glow about the mast-head and rigging of ships. Every year on July 15th the ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Castor and Pollux, their Roman counterparts.
"Come hither, leaving the island of Pelops, strong sons of Zeus and Leda; appear with kindly heart, Castor and Polydeukes, who go on swift horses over the broad earth and all the sea, and easily rescue men from chilling death, leaping on the peaks of their well-benched ships, brilliant from afar as you run up the fore-stays, bringing light to the black ship in the night of trouble."
--- Alcaeus

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT ILDEPHONSUS OF TOLEDO Feast Day: January 23
"No one will ever be the servant of the Son without serving the Mother."
Spanish Catholics esteem St. Ildefonsus (or Ildephonsus) as one of their greatest saints, second only to Isidore of Seville. As archbishop of Toledo, he led the Spanish church from 658 to 667. Like Isidore, Ildefonsus contributed to the creation of the collaborative union of church and state that came to typify medieval Europe. For example, he presided over a council in 653 that granted secular leaders the right to participate in ecclesiastical decisions. But at the same time, bishops participated in the election of kings and joined with state officials in publishing secular laws and pardoning traitors. Thus the saint helped forge medieval political relationships well ahead of their time.
Veneration of the Virgin Mary runs deep in the Hispanic Catholic tradition. That stream of Marian devotion can trace its roots in part to Ildefonsus. He loved Mary and honored her in his landmark book, On the Perpetual Virginity of Holy Mary. Its themes inspired the Marian 'breastplate' songs of Irish monks in Europe, and through many centuries copyists placed quotes from it in books of hours. Ildefonsus's work may have influenced the long-standing practice of celebrating mass on Saturdays in honor of Mary.
El Greco and Velásquez have memorialized in paintings a story about Ildefonsus that became popular around the 12th century. Once when he was seated in his episcopal chair, Mary is reported to have appeared and presented him with a chasuble as a token of gratitude for his devotion. Ildefonsus died on January 23, 667.

Puye was one of the ancestral villages of Santa Clara, San Ildefonso and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblos, occupied from about 900 AD to 1580 AD. In the Tewa language, the name Puye translates to "pueblo ruin where the rabbits assemble or meet."
There are extensive ruins at the base of the cliffs and on top of the mesa, with outstanding examples of early Pueblo architecture and stunning panoramas of the Rio Grande valley. The rooms dug into the base of the cliff wall extend for over a mile along the south face of the mesa. There is a secondary level that is about 2100 feet long. The sheer number of cliff dwellings at Puye, and how far they extend, is overwhelming, indicative of a large community.

Edward Sheriff Curtis - Okuwa-Tsire, or 'Cloud Bird,'of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1905.
* * * *
“Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to life, even when it is easier letting go. Hold on to my hand, even when I have gone away from you.”
