Text
June 28th 2012 on the campus of San Diego State University … I sat down with my team in a meeting room and an hour later San Diego Sports Domination was born. Today marks seven years. San Diego Sports Domination (SDSD for short) is an award-winning sports blog based in San Diego, California. We created this blog to share our love of sports with the San Diego Community and to help cover teams that the San Diego Media might not have the bandwidth to cover.
Since our creation we have been read in over 180 countries around the world. We have received over 450,000 views. We have also won two blogging awards (eCollege Finders Top Collegiate Blog Award and Our City San Diego’s Top 10 Blog Award). We have had articles linked to newspapers and blogs all over the United States. We have worked with many major brands across the country to cover events in San Diego. We have worked with Bellator MMA, Dove Just For Men, Petco, America’s Best Racing, Delaware North Sportservice, Staples and AT&T just to name a few.
We are the largest all-inclusive sports blog in San Diego. We have been guests on many radio shows including Xtra Sports 1360, Mighty 1090 “Scott & BR Show”, ESPN 1700 “Rod Luck”, Talk Now San Antonio (ESPN), SB Nation Podcasts and many more. We have been invited onto a few local TV stations to talk about San Diego Sports. Those stations being NBC 7 San Diego, CBS 8 San Diego and KUSI Sports. We also have spoken with Fox 5 San Diego just incase they need a sports expert to comment. We almost did a March Madness segment with them last year.
NBC 7’s Todd Strain, SDSD CEO David Frerker and SDSD Senior Writer John Kegley.
Back in 2016 we teamed up with Oakwood Escrow SD and Ignite Now Media to create a new sports segment on The American Dream TV Show. The goal of the show was to provide sports stories to fans of the American Dream and SDSD. I was one of the main driving forces behind getting guests to appear on The American Dream Sports Stories. All in all we had guests ranging from super fans, NFL players, Olympic Gold Medalists and more. Below is one of the segments of the show that I hosted.

We have made leaps and strides to make San Diego Sports Domination your go to destination for San Diego Sports News. For the first six years of our site we have provided game day coverage on Social Media and through post game articles. In December of 2018, we asked all of our fans one question. Instead of posting one high quality cover photo would you guys like full photo albums from events? The response was heavily in favor of posting a ton of photos. That new strategy was implemented on January 1st 2019. Since then we have had over 200,000 views on the blog this year. Site traffic this year has grown exponentially. We have had 6x as many hits in 6 months as we did in all of 2018.

San Diego Sports Domination has been a project from the very beginning. We have relied on our staff of dedicated writers and photographers. Our staff does this because they love sports. We have had many writers along for the ride with us… but two of them stand out. Olivia Sandusky and Scott Koppenhaver. SDSD has helped both of them enter into their current fields. Scott wrote for us back in 2014 covering San Diego State Baseball on the blog and on all of our social media platforms. Scott did an amazing job. I was honored to give Scott a glowing recommendation during his interview process with the NFL. Scott is now working as a social media content producer at the National Football League. Olivia wrote for us back in 2016 covering Albion SC Pros now ASC San Diego. We connected and I learned about how Olivia wanted to get in front of the camera. I was able to work with Albion to place Olivia as the pre/post game interviewer. Olivia went on to bigger and better things. Olivia is now rocking her career as an on air TV journalist.
So far in 2019 San Diego Sports Domination has provided coverage of 83 events with three more on Saturday. Then taking a break for the month of July. This fall we will be adding some high school football photography into our line up of sports coverage. We could not have done it without the photos of Tony Amat, Edwin Dickerson, Von Ware, Chris Atkans and John Mathew Harrison. Our professional photographer’s photos have brought San Diego Sports Domination to a whole new level! Also thank you to all of our loyal readers and followers. We would not be here if we didn’t have you all! We do not publish every sports update that comes across the lines in an attempt to not alienate our followers. The best way to keep up with us is on Facebook or Twitter. We look forward to continuing to bring you up to the minute news coverage of every San Diego Sports team for years to come!

so. today marks a pretty special occasion for me. today officially marks the 5-year anniversary of the first LA Kings/hockey game i’ve ever been to. on Thursday, April 4th, 2013, my dad and i went to the Kings v. Wild game and saw Justin Williams score one minute and twenty nine seconds into the first period for what would eventually be the game-winning goal, as former Kings backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier posted a shutout.
so i’m making a post to sort of commemorate this achievement(? i guess you can call it that)--5 awesome years of being a hockey fan, and all the amazing games and events and players i’ve seen in these past 5 years.

there’s probably a hell of a lot more info number-wise i could put on here, like which individuals we’ve seen score the most for and against each team, etc., but honestly idk if i have the patience to figure that out, lmao. also i’m sure there’s plenty of games we’ve been to where so-and-so or what’s-his-face got a milestone goal/point/game career total but again, can’t be bothered to go back and look it up. for those who may want more info tho, here’s a post i made a while ago that i update regularly w/ all the games i’ve been to w/ a final score and the goal-scorers.
for real tho like. i don’t wanna get all sappy and shit and suddenly turn this post all emotional (just watch me do so anyway) but i honestly cannot express how much this sport means to me. like insert tragic backstory(tm) here and how hockey was what saved me and all that jazz but shit like. i mean yeah this shit’s got it’s ups and downs but at least whenever i get frustrating about personal stuff, i can distract myself w/ a game. or if the game’s pissing me off, at least i’m not focusing on all the shit going on in my personal life. b/c before i started watching, i really.. didn’t have much, kinda??
basically i went through a major bought of depression throughout 2012 which sorta peaked in early 2013 w/ stuff i’d rather not discuss here, but if my dad hadn’t taken me to that game 5 years ago, i honestly don’t know if i’d still be around today. i felt like i’d lost a lot. nothing interested me anymore. my favorite band at the time broke up when i felt like i’d already hit rock bottom. i had like no outlet for what little strong emotion i did feel at the time b/c otherwise i just felt empty. but when Justin Williams scored that goal a minute and twenty nine freaking seconds into that game, i knew that was it. that’s what sealed the deal for me.
i had zero idea what to expect, even w/ my dad giving me a basic rundown of the roster and some basic rules about the game. like we watched the wild warm up (b/c that’s where our seats were) and my dad kept pointing out Zach Parise to me damn-near every time he skated past us b/c he’s a former UND alumni, as is like half my family on my dad’s side, but after a while it was like “okay dad, i get it. Zach Parise. UND. pretty cool,” lmao. and then the game starts and it was so quiet. like i’ve been to like a million high school football games, a good number of pro baseball games, and one pro basketball game, but all of them were.. well a hell of a lot louder, for one. like people were watching the game, but at the same time they weren’t. people in and out of their seats all the time, tons of idle chit-chat, etc. but when that first puck dropped, people sat down and shut up. they watched, like. really watched. and when Williams scored, the utter elation of the entire building (save the wild fans of course), the horn, the “hey hey hey!” chant complete w/ fist-pumping--it was just. i honestly can’t even describe it properly. but what i can say was that it was the first time in a looong time i felt genuinely happy.
and here i am exactly 5 years later. going back to Staples for my 47th Kings game. and i like to think i’ve seen some pretty wild shit in these past five years. league rule changes that ultimately changed the entire ASG format, amazing players both leaving and joining the league (i.e. Teemu Selanne, Auston Matthews), the 2014 Olympics, a few All-Star games, and a World Cup, the first paid pro women’s league and the U.S. women’s team fight for equitable wages, the first transgender athlete to play pro hockey (i.e. the amazing and inspirational Harrison Browne), a freaking expansion team in Vegas.
and speaking of Vegas, i went to the first ever hockey games held in the new arena, and while it wasn’t the result we wanted, at least i got to spent two nights in a row in the coolest new arena in town, plus i got to see 3 native players on the ice in one game on the second night vs. the Avalanche, which is probably more than any other team/match-up in this league could boast. and i could not have been more proud.
i was there for Andy Andreoff’s NHL debut where he got into a fight w/ Matt Hendricks in his first shift on the ice.
i accidentally met Matt Greene’s parents b/c his mom happened to notice my dad was wearing his jersey and asked for a picture.
i ran into Bob Miller outside Staples and he let me see his 2014 Stanley Cup Championship ring, the same night they raised the banner.
the first time i saw my next favorite team, the Avalanche, was three years ago on the 2-year anniversary of my first Kings game, and i took @gofredthefish along for the ride.
i stood and cheered and cried for Mike Richards and Justin Williams on their return to LA after both had signed w/ the Capitals.
i was there to see Jonathan Quick’s epic scorpion kick save against Winnipeg three seasons ago (the night before we drove down to San Deigo so i could catch an Of Mice & Men concern, then drive back to LA the following day so i could catch a flight to Bismarck, ND to visit family for senior year spring break).
i jokingly put a “native curse” San Jose’s bench before warmups back in 2014 during the first round of the playoffs, the night the Kings started their reverse sweep (as well as it being Tyler Toffoli’s 22nd birthday).
the first shootout i ever saw went to the Blues, courtesy of Troy Brouwer’s goal in the 7th round.
sent our 2014 Olympians off on a high note w/ a 2-1 overtime win against the Blue Jackets where Robyn Regehr scored the gwg from right in front of where i was sitting.
went to my first game in Honda Center and the Ducks were gloriously shut out. (i was also one of maybe ten Blue Jackets fans in the entire building.)
saw Dwight King score on Marty Brodeur from the blue line, Alec Martinez score on the Avs twice on the same play, Milan Lucic’s first game in Staples Center as a King, got a video of the signature Nick Foligno/Sergei Bobrovsky Hug(tm)--twice, since they shut out the Ducks that one time, saw the home team get a 3-0 shutout in both my first NHL and AHL games, was there for the Luc Robitaille statue unveiling outside Staples, and stood less than 10 feet away from Cam Atkinson outside Staples before the 2017 ASG.
i went to a Reign game where they knocked the San Diego Gulls out of the playoffs just a couple of weeks after i was released from the hospital after falling into a diabetic-induced coma (also i had a cold but i’ll be damned if i wasn’t gonna persevere).
i went to two separate You Can Play-sponsored LGBT+ Pride Nights for both the NHL and NWHL--and speaking of which, that particular NWHL Pride Night was my first ever women’s hockey game ever. and Boston kept their “undefeated since last january” record alive and well.
and the one moment that still makes me cry every time i think about it was when i saw Matt Duchene score his first goal of the season in 2015-16 in what would eventually be his first 30-goal season. i was sat in the second row right in front of where he threw himself into the glass in celebration, so i like to think we kinda celly’d together.
but best of all, i got to meet @hockeyacegrace earlier this season on Native American Heritage Night, and took @kylorenedict to the Kings’ opening night against the Flyers to kick off the 50-year anniversary of the First Expansion. and not to mention the many other wonderful friends i’ve made in this fandom, who also include (but are not limited to) @brandoncarlo, @jodrouin27, @sadchihuahua, @elzaechelon, @marianyossa, and @dominic-turgeon.
basically just. here’s to 5 gods damned years of selling my soul to this hell on ice. and gods damn it, here’s to 5 more.

Major League Baseball roundup: Cole dominates, Astros top A
Gerrit Cole pitched his third straight overpowering game, while teammates Max Stassi and Derek Fisher stunned Daniel Mengden with back-to-back, two-strike home runs with two outs in the seventh inning Wednesday afternoon, sending the visiting Houston Astros to a 4-1 win over the Oakland Athletics and a sweep of their three-game series.

Cole (4-1), a California native who never previously pitched in Oakland, struck out nine in six innings to run his total to 37 in his last three starts covering 21 2/3 innings. He allowed one run, which put the Astros in a 1-0 hole in the bottom of the sixth.
A one-out single by Matt Joyce and RBI double by Jed Lowrie provided the game’s first scoring. The Astros, who completed a 4-2 trip, bounced right back against Mengden, who had shut out Houston on four hits before allowing the two homers.
Yankees 9, Red Sox 6
Brett Gardner hit a go-ahead, two-run triple, and Aaron Judge followed with a mammoth two-run homer with one out in the eighth inning as host New York pulled out a victory over Boston.
Gardner began the night with a .198 average but capped his first three-hit game of the year by lifting Craig Kimbrel’s 96 mph fastball soaring over center fielder Mookie Betts’ head to give the Yankees a 7-6 lead.
Judge and Gardner each scored three runs, and Judge drove in three. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run double for New York. Mitch Mosreland, Andrew Benintendi and Hanley Ramirez homered for the Red Sox.
Padres 2, Nationals 1
Matt Szczur doubled home Manuel Margot to break a seventh-inning tie, giving host San Diego a victory over Washington, preventing the Nationals from sweeping the three-game series.
Margot singled for his third hit of the game opening the seventh against Trevor Gott (0-2). Margot immediately stole second and moved to third when catcher Matt Wieters’ throw bounced into center field. One out later, Szczur, who was hitting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, lined an RBI double to left-center.
Craig Stammen (1-0) got the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, and Brad Hand picked up his 10th save.
Phillies 11, Giants 3
Nick Pivetta pitched five shutout innings, Maikel Franco homered, and Philadelphia handily defeated visiting San Francisco.
Pivetta allowed only four hits while striking out seven and walking none.
Carlos Santana had three hits and a career-high-tying five RBIs while Franco added three hits as the Phillies won for the third straight time in a series that ends Thursday.
Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 3
Chris Taylor reached base in his first four trips to the plate as Los Angeles proved to be opportunistic, scoring twice on wild pitches in a victory over visiting Arizona.
The Dodgers didn’t collect a hit until the fourth inning, when Taylor singled, and didn’t need a hit at all to bring home any of their first four runs. Their only RBI hit in the game was Chase Utley’s two-run double in the eighth inning.
Los Angeles scored on wild pitches in the fourth and sixth innings, added another run on a Kyle Farmer sacrifice fly in the sixth and one when Taylor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth. Taylor also walked twice.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 2
Yangervis Solarte and Justin Smoak had RBI doubles to key a four-run, eighth-inning rally, and Toronto came back to defeat visiting Seattle.
Teoscar Hernandez had three hits, including a home run, for the Blue Jays, who were no-hit Tuesday by Mariners left-hander James Paxton.
With Seattle ahead 2-1 entering the eighth, Josh Donaldson led off with a double against Mariners reliever Juan Nicasio (1-1). The Blue Jays then got RBI doubles from Solarte and Smoak.
Orioles 5, Royals 3
Mark Trumbo’s two-run single in the eighth inning allowed Baltimore to snap a seven-game losing streak with a victory over visiting Kansas City.
Chris Davis accounted for the Orioles’ other three runs with a fourth-inning home run.
Richard Bleier (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, and Brad Brach escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the ninth for his fourth save.
Braves 5, Rays 2
Julio Teheran pitched seven scoreless innings, and Atlanta beat Tampa Bay to sweep a two-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Teheran (3-1) allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter for the first time in eight starts. He struck out seven in his first career appearance against Tampa Bay. Teheran has not allowed a run in his past two starts, a stretch of 13 innings.
Arodys Vizciano pitched around a single to work a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one and earned his sixth save in seven tries.
Angels 8, Rockies 0
Justin Upton homered for the second time in two days, and Zack Cozart and Rene Rivera also hit home runs as Los Angeles snapped host Colorado’s six-game winning streak.
It was the Angels’ sixth win in their last eight games, as four pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts. The early offense backed rookie right-hander Jaime Barria (3-1), who worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Justin Anderson, Jose Alvarez and Akeel Morris completed the eight-hit shutout. Upton finished with three hits while Mike Trout and Cozart had two apiece.
Pirates 6, White Sox 5
Slideshow (5 Images)
Pittsburgh overcame a four-run deficit for the second day in a row to beat host Chicago and earn a sweep of the two-game series.
The Pirates trailed 5-2 entering the ninth but scored four runs against reliever Nate Jones (2-1) on Elias Diaz’s two-run double and Colin Moran’s two-run homer, his third, to right-center.
Pittsburgh reliever Richard Rodriguez (1-1) pitched the eighth, giving up a run but still earning his first major league win. Felipe Vazquez pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his seventh save in as many opportunities.
Cubs 13, Marlins 4
Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell homered as part of an eight-run third inning, and Chicago defeated visiting Miami. Rizzo finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs.
Russell went 3-for-3 with two walks as the Cubs swept the three-game series. That broke a Marlins streak of having won four consecutive series before arriving in Chicago.
Jose Quintana (4-2) earned the win, allowing five hits, two walks and one run in six innings. Chicago’s Kris Bryant hit a milestone homer — No. 100 for his career. The line-drive solo shot to left came on the three-year anniversary of his first major league home run.
Reds 2, Mets 1 (10 innings)
Adam Duvall homered leading off the bottom of the 10th inning as Cincinnati earned its first home series win of the season by edging visiting New York, which continues to struggle.
Duvall hit the fourth pitch he saw from AJ Ramos (1-2) well into the left field seats for his first career walk-off homer. The shot made a winner out of Rafael Iglesias (1-0), who tossed two perfect innings.
The Reds won the final two games against the Mets to win their first series at home since they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates last Sept. 15-17. The Mets lost for the 16th time in 23 games on an afternoon “highlighted” by a first inning in which a double by Asdrubal Cabrera was nullified because he batted out of order.
Indians 6, Brewers 2
Carlos Carrasco dominated on the mound with a season-high 14 strikeouts, and Tyler Naquin and Francisco Lindor each homered to help visiting Cleveland snap a four-game slide with a win against Milwaukee.
Carrasco (5-1) went the distance for his 10th career complete game and second this season. He allowed five hits and walked only one. He struck out the side in the third and fourth inning and induced inning-ending double plays in the second and sixth.
Naquin delivered the big blast in the fourth inning, hammering a 3-2 slider from Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra over the center field wall for a three-run shot that gave the Indians a 4-0 lead. It was Naquin’s second home run of the season.
Rangers 5, Tigers 4 (10 innings)
Nomar Mazara hit two solo homers, including the game-winner to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning, to give host Texas a win over Detroit. The Tigers were playing without five regulars due to injuries or rest. That group included right fielder and cleanup hitter Nicholas Castellanos, who was scratched due to knee soreness.
Mazara ripped a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall off Warwick Saupold (1-1) to allow Texas to take the series 2-1. Mazara has 10 homers this season and seven in his last nine games.
Delino DeShields walked four times and scored twice while Adrian Beltre drove in two runs for the Rangers. Keone Kela (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to notch the win.
