How to help the people in Spain
As you may have seen online, Spain is going through a flash flood since October 29. It's mainly affected the Community of Valencia but also some parts of the south-west and the cold drop is now moving to the north-east.
95 bodies have been found at the time I'm writing this (edit: 205 now), there's still people missing and entire towns are isolated as they don't have electricity and their roads have been destroyed. A lot of people don't have tap water or any means to cook. If you're wondering why people didn't evacuate beforehand, it's because authorities didn't care enough to warn people so technically everyone had to go to work and school. Though politicians should be held accountable, the most important thing at the moment is to help those in need. So here's some ways you can help both people and animals that have been affected.
NGOs and fundraisers
MOST NEEDED AT THE MOMENT: You can donate to Valencia's food bank by making a transfer to this bank account: ES86 2100 2806 6402 0009 8998.
Horta Sud is a county in Valencia that has been the most affected by the floodings. People are leaving their houses because they're scared of the infrastructure getting damaged and even walking by foot to Valencia capital to get food. You can help those families via this gofundme.
Hambre Cero is a Spanish non-profit that was founded after the earthquakes in Indonesia. They will be giving food to those who need it. Here's different ways you can donate.
This gofundme is joining efforts with the town hall of Valencia to help people who have lost their homes.
Una copa por Valencia ("a drink to Valencia") is a campaign organized by Spanish influencer David Aliagas. The idea behind it is to donate the amount of money you would spend on drinks on a night out. He'll be joining effort with local non-profits. You can help here.
Here's a thread of artists that are accepting commissions in exchange for donations for Valencia.
Spanish Kpop fans are organizing a collective fundraiser.
EDIT: took Cáritas and Spanish Red Cross out of this post after this tiktok made by a volunteer went viral and a lot of people posted their experiences working for these NGOs. Apparently they're not distributing food. Instead they're telling people not to send more food and send money instead so they can keep part of it.
Help people directly
Help Sara, Steven and Bruno rebuild their home in Valencia.
Help this high school teacher buy a new car to get back to work.
Raúl was about to open his barbershop on October 31 but it was destroyed by the flood. Please help him get his dream back.
Help the neighbours of Aldaia (Valencia) rebuild their homes.
This artist has been affected by the floods and lost their car. They've opened emergency commissions.
You can help rebuild the town of Letur (Albacete) by donating to this gofundme that's directly coordinated with the town hall.
Rebeca is a seamstress. Her studio was both her workplace and a place were came together for a sewing club in the afternoons. It was destroyed by the flood. You can help her rebuild it here
Animal shelters
Refugio Minipow was home to 50 rabbits and guinea pigs. Thankfully, the owners were able to move all the animals to their homes and those of their neighbors, though the shelter itself has been destroyed right after recent renovations. There's different ways to donate here.
El Refugio de María a dog shelter in Sueca (Valencia), is completely flooded, leaving the dogs visibly distressed, as shown here. You can donate to PayPal [email protected]
Modepran is a dog shelter in Campanar (Valencia) where infrastructure damage has left some dogs without a proper sleeping area. You can donate through PayPal here.
Gatos Campo de Gibraltar is a cat shelter in Los Barrios (Cádiz). need of assistance for relocating cats to new homes and rebuilding damaged facilities. You can donate to their PayPal [email protected]
Protectora San Antón is an animal shelter for cats and dogs in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). The entire place is flooded and the animals don't have a comfortable place to sleep in. Cats can't even walk on the ground. You can donate to their PayPal [email protected]
I'll be adding more as I find them. Thank you everyone for your help.
Edit: adding this because I keep seeing people on Twitter and Tiktok say it makes no sense to give money to people in a "first world" country. I need you people to understand that living in a western country doesn't equal politicians caring about you.
This whole thing started because politicians weren't doing their job and they're still not doing it. People (literal civilians, not firefighters or policemen) are literally pulling bodies from under cars and putting them inside the trunks so children in the affected areas don't see them. There's underground parkings still flooded by water and we don't know how many people may be inside them.
France offered to send us 200 firemen and the Ministry of Interior literally REFUSED. Some of these French firemen came on their own anyway. But that's what our politicians are doing. Negating help and pointing fingers at each other so they don't seem guilty.

WHAT'S GOING ON IN SPAIN AND HOW YOU CAN HELP even if you live in a different country
Please read!!
Since October 29, Spain has been going through one of the worst flash floods of this century. The Community of Valencia has been the most affected, but the cold drop also passed through the south-west and is moving now to the north-east.
So far, 211 bodies have been found, and more than 2000 people are still missing. Most fatalities are from Valencia, entire towns are ravaged and isolated as they don't have electricity and the roads have been destroyed. A lot of people has lost their home, more than 15k homes don't have eletricity and they are in need of food, water and hygienic products
The reason Valencia was the most affected is because, despite given a warning 5 days before from the AEMET (Spain's official meteorological agency) of the possible mass floodings due to the cold drop, and the same morning of the catastrophe, it's authorities didn't warn it's people. Valencia's government waited 12h after the last warning from the AEMET (and it's president even said it would subside 2h before the floodings) before declaring the red alert, at 8pm. By then, many people was already caught in the flood while going or coming back from work.
Although politicians must be accountable, our priority is to help those in need, most which have lost their house, belongings and means to live. Because of this, here are some fundraisers and non-profits you can donate to help both people and animals that have been affected (these are from the thread I've just posted, but I'll add more if I find them!):
Horta Sud is a county in Valencia that has been the most affected by the floodings. People are leaving their houses because they're scared of the infrastructure getting damaged and even walking by foot to Valencia capital to get food.
Letur (Albacete) is a town that has been destroyed by the floods. You can help rebuild it by donating to this gofundme that's directly coordinated with the town hall.
Hambre Cero is a Spanish food bank non-profit that was founded after the earthquakes in Indonesia. They're currently active in Palestine and Lebanon but they'll also be giving food to those who need it in Spain.
El Refugio de María a dog shelter in Sueca (Valencia), is completely flooded, leaving the dogs visibly distressed and without a proper place to sleep. You can donate to their PayPal: [email protected]
Protectora San Antón is a shelter for cats and dogs in Jerez de la Frontera. It's flooded and the animals don't have a comfortable place to sleep in. If you live in Spain you can bizum them @ 635011715 If not, PayPal [email protected]
Help Sara and her family rebuild their home in Valencia.
Refugio Minipow was home to 50 rabbits and guinea pigs. Thankfully, the owners were able to move all the animals to their homes and those of their neighbors, though the shelter itself has been destroyed right after recent renovations. They accept help through PayPal, Bizum or a transference to their bank account.
Una copa por Valencia ("a drink to Valencia") is a campaign organized by Spanish influencer David Aliagas. The idea behind it is to donate the amount of money you would spend on drinks on a night out. He'll be joining effort with local non-profits.
Help the people of Mira (Cuenca) rebuild their hometown.
This group of artists is giving away drawings to people who donate at least 5€ to any of the fundraisers listed in the thread!!!
You can donate to Valencia's food bank by making a transfer to this bank account: ES86 2100 2806 6402 0009 8998
Thread of artists that are accepting comissions for Valencia:
This artist has been directed by the floodings. He just opened emergency comissions
I'll add more fundraising campaigns I find on Twitter/Bluesky, but until then, please consider helping in any way you can! Even if it's just by sharing!
#valencia#españa#spain#dana#climate crisis#there's a lot of skilled artist accepting commissions to help the victims#and some of them are even affected directly by the floodings#please at least take a look!#i'm posting these here bc this is the place where i have more followers#but i'm also sharing them on twitter and bluesky#if you can share this info in other social media i'll be more than grateful

what is happening in Valencia (Spain)?
More than 200 people have died and 2000 people are missing since the catastrophe that happened in Valencia, Spain, a couple days ago.
Valencia is one of the most popular and beautiful regions in Spain, often visited by lots of international — and national — tourists to have a great time in the summer.
Meteorologists said a year’s worth of rain had fallen in just eight hours in parts of Valencia — specially, in small towns — this Tuesday. In Spain, this phenomenon is called “Dana”, which is basically a “cold drop”, which causes saturated air to rise rapidly, leading to heavy rain, thunderstorms and tornadoes to happen.
For reference to americans: hurricane milton caused 27 dead, these massive storms in valencia caused more than 90 deaths in a region that is much, much smaller... the weather services warned about the danger, and political authorities still did nothing to send people home from their jobs. the civil alarms reached our phones at 8pm, when many were already trapped in cars, basements, malls, factories. the loss, especially human loss, is incalculable (from: @/woundposting on tumblr)
People who worked overnight for big companies were not even able to go back to their homes and ensure their safety — some of them, lots of them, even lost their lives in that same night. It has been three days now and there are still more reports of disappearances and deaths, and the government is NOT acting like they should. This is a tragedy, which could have been avoided if they only did one thing right, and no one is taking responsability — not the government, not the big companies who didn’t let their workers go home, no one.
It is always the working class people who help the working class people.
Since this is a situation that has took the whole country by surprise and horror, I will put more info under the cut if you want to know more, and if you want to donate to some gofundme’s.

Diego Javier Luis is assistant professor of history at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He is the author of The First Asians in the Americas: A Transpacific History (forthcoming, 2024).
Edited by Sam Haselby.
Cape Sebastian in Oregon perches above two forested declivities along a rocky patch of the state’s southern coast. Travel there today, and you are likely to miss a roadside marker that reads:
Spanish navigators were the first to explore the North American Pacific Coast. Beginning fifty years after Columbus discovered the Western continents, Sebastian Vizciano [sic] saw this cape in 1603 and named it after the patron saint of the day of his discovery. Other navigators, Spanish, British, and American, followed a century and a half later.
Standing before this sign, I winced rather predictably as I read ‘discovery’. But simmering beneath my displeasure with this word was a deeper conviction that Sebastián Vizcaíno’s voyage was, indeed, significant, though not in the ways that the sign suggests. Thousands of miles to the east, in Seville, the old centre of the Spanish Empire, I had stumbled upon Vizcaíno’s voyage in the dusty volumes of treasury records for the port of Acapulco, Mexico. Buried in line after line of winding, Baroque script were curious notations – ‘chino’ and ‘japón’ – next to the names of seven sailors that Vizcaíno had recruited for his voyage up the North American coast. To the tune of carriages rumbling through Seville’s cobbled streets and the crinkle of centuries-old pages turning, I read the names again and again:
Antón Tomás Antonio Bengala Francisco Miguel Cristóbal Catoya Agustín Longalo Lucas Cate Agustín Sao
Seven Asian sailors – entombed by an archive and forgotten by human memory – had sailed with Vizcaíno to what is now Oregon. Where in the chronology of Asian American history could these sailors fit? Flip to the beginning of most books on Asian America, and you will find no content earlier than the 19th century. You will be in the world of the Gold Rush, the transcontinental railroad, indenture, and the San Francisco and Los Angeles Chinatowns.
These seven names transport us to a different world, a different timeline, a different Asian America. These sailors’ presence off the coast of Oregon predated not just the entire Asian American canon but also the founding of the United States and even of the Thirteen Colonies. The histories of the first Asians in the Americas do not take place in the nations born from the fires of British colonialism but, rather, they guide us to a region rarely considered relevant to Asian American history: Latin America.

Hornillos de Camino - Castrojeriz (day 17)
Very easy walk today, we are in the Meseta of Spain and it is FLAT! Very close to our destination we came across the ruins of an old church (convent of San Antón) where they had snacks for pilgrims and trinkets for sale.
We have made it to our Albergue for the night and are thankful for the sunny evening!
Note to Jude: still fresh squeezed orange juice every day!

Encamisada festivity in Estercuel, Teruel. 2023.
This tradition has been celebrated at least since 1892, but its origins are unknown, and it celebrates San Antón ridding the town once more of the plague. The name comes from the encamisada military tactic done by the Spanish Tercios, where they would wear white shirts (camisas) and attack the enemy while sleeping to prevent them making any sounds. This is the tradition that has survived.

El Camino de Santiago - SJPDP > Santiago de Compostela
Day 13 - 28th August - Arroyo San Bol > San Anton Ruins
Day 14 - 29th August - San Anton Ruins > Frómista
Day 15 - 30th August - Frómista > Carrión de los Condes
Had a slow start to the day, MOC not feeling 💯, left Arroyo around 9am. We had a short day - only 11km to San Antón, and the Ruins. 5km into Montana - arrived just after 10. Went from Hot Chocolate to Mojitos.
At 12pm we visited the municipal pool (as it opened). It was so good to swim, and cool off. The water was so blue, nice and crisp. A few locals just sitting around. One other guy swam with us. Apparently the locals only swim later - around 5-7pm.
Off we go to San Antón - keen for one of the spots as it's first come first served, and check in opens at 2:30pm. We arrive at 2:15pm, and one other guy is waiting - said the volunteers have gone to lunch. Ended up waiting until 4:30pm - learned a new card game, but we get to sleep in a ruin. Nice family style meal, and some sing-along with a couple of guitars.
Woke up early in San Antón to lightning and thunder - quite scary in a half fallen down building. We were worried about walking in a thunderstorm, as we are quite exposed. Host said we would be fine, just need rain protection. Leave just before 8, not much rain.
In the next town, a man says something to me, and gives me a snail, feels super creepy. Heading out of town, rain is quite heavy, and we head up our big hill of the day - nice views looking back. Stopped at Hero de la Vega to dry off, and get a drink. As we left town, all cleared - jackets off, sunblock on.
Hard 8km slog to Boadillla El Camino - Juntos albergue, where we had pancakes. Pricey place, run by a dutch couple. Then another 5km to Fromista. So hot, as we left after 2:30pm. Arrived around 4pm - Albergue Vicus. Private room, which was nice. Shower, groceries, then dinner at El Chiringuito - riba and morcillo.
Left just after 7 from Fromista, walked 8km before stopped for a drink in Revenga de Campos. Then 5.9km to Villacazar de Sirga - had two big beers as a reward. It was a bit early for lunch, so kept walking in hopes of finding a shady tree, no luck. Walked into town and checked in at the municipal albergue - very nice, with big bunk rooms!
Had a picnic lunch by the river which was lovely under the trees, then went to the municipal pool for a swim. Turns out we couldn't swim without swim caps, so convinced them to lend us some, and we definitely looked fantastic.
Back at the hostel - music hour was at 6, where they sang some songs from different countries, was quite sweet. Although we looked for dinner alternatives, we couldn't find any that served before 8, so back to the albergue for family dinner. Nice, but not super filling.
