Sculpture and combined media + Photography
After looking at work done by artist Angus Whitty I decided to go a beach myself and recreate my version of ‘plastic beaches’. I went to Salthill beach in co Galway and spends some time trying to gather plastic waste left on the beach. The beach I was on was very clean and I couldn’t find much plastic waste to use as sculptures. Eventually I found a cone, a toy phone and brush, some string and a few bottle caps and started trying to stack them. I really enjoyed this process of stacking things that weren’t made to be stacked. I found it difficult to make them balance off each other. I then decided that it didn’t matter if they didn’t balance for too long, as long as it was enough time to photograph them. In this way the balancing wasn’t an important part of the structure as it becomes an illusion captured in photography.

Woche 3 - Teil 2

June 22 - Galway, Cliffs of Moher & Limerick
After breakfast we decided to do a 90 minute Hop on Hop off bus tour of Galway. It left from the opposite side of Eyre Square from our hotel!
Tumblr media
We got front row seats on the second deck and settled in for the show. I’ll just give the highlights…the Spanish Arch that according to our guide is the most underwhelming monument in Ireland! (It was the doorway used by new arrivals as they walked from the docks into the city.)
Tumblr media
Couldn’t figure out how they made the list! Then it was off to Salthill, the beach / amusement park section of the city. For those in PA, think Sans Souci or Hansens at Harveys Lake. Prominent here is the Black Rock Diving Tower still in use today.
Tumblr media
Also seen were several golf courses, O’Connor’s bar, the University of Galloway and finally the Galloway Cathedral, which was built in 1965.

Oh good…time to head to the Cliffs of Moher.

Artist Research - Vanda Luddy
Vanda Luddy is a Galway-based artist who runs her own gallery on Abbeygate Street. She sells her original work and fine art prints of Galway landscapes, people, flora and fauna.
I chose her as artist research as we have some of her work in my family home and as I was born and raised in Galway, I find her paintings very nostalgic. They remind me of sunny summer days as a child and because of her vivid and saturated colour pallete they feel warm and welcoming.

Little Diggers
I especially love this piece, we have a similar one in my house, with two girls instead , supposedly me and my sister. It feels so reminiscent of childhood and spending days at our local beach or the beach across from my grandparents house, building sandcastles, searching rockpools and swimming,

Piers & Promenades - Galway, Ireland
Tumblr media
We had a picture-perfect day for a lovely stroll from Galway to Salthill along the shores of Galway Bay. We crossed the River Corrib and walked out to Nimmo's Pier. Wonderful views of the bayfront in Galway.
Tumblr media
Beautiful views of Galway Bay from the path.
Tumblr media
We walked out to Mutton Island on the causeway - the island is not accessible to the public, as there is a water treatment plant on it, but you can walk out as far as the gate to the plant.
Tumblr media
Nice view of Salthill from the causeway.
Tumblr media
We continued along the path toward Salthill, I think that I read a sign that called the path "The Long Walk".
Tumblr media
Famine Ship Memorial - dedicated to the captains and crews who carried many thousands of victims of the great famine to safety. The names of the ships are on the stone in the left and right in the picture. The stone in the middle represents the light from Mutton Lighthouse - the last light from their homeland that the thousands of refugees saw as they fled from the famine to safety.
Tumblr media
Celia Griffin Memorial Park - she was a victim of the famine. Her story is a sad one, but just one of many of the Irish who suffered and died during the Great Famine.
Tumblr media
Salthill Promenade - Saturday crowds enjoying the amazing weather.
Tumblr media
Beautiful rocky beaches in Salthill.
Tumblr media
Lots of people swimming in the bay - the water had to have been freezing. At high tide, the locals will jump from the platform on the building at the end of this walkway. No thank you!!
After a nice walk along the promenade, we stopped and had brunch at O'Reilly's Bar and Kitchen. We had hoped to sit out on their rooftop deck, but it wasn't open until later. We had a nice breakfast and a couple of Irish coffees, before walking back to Galway. We didn't walk back along the bay, we chose to stay inland and just followed Whitestrand Road back to town.
Tumblr media
Crossing back over the River Corrib on Father Griffin Road in Galway.
Tumblr media
We wandered through the Latin Quarter, a shopping district in Galway, on our way back to our Airbnb.
Tumblr media
Plenty of people out and about in the Latin Quarter, a busy Saturday!
We spent the afternoon relaxing at our place and doing a bit of laundry - as we are headed to Limerick tomorrow. We wanted to catch a bit of the Rugby World Cup this evening, so we managed to find a small pub (where we didn't need a reservation) and enjoyed a nice meal and a good match. Perfect way to end our time in Galway.

MAN EXPLORING BEACH TOGETHER WITH HIS SON AND THEIR DOG
Seapoint is a small seafront area between Blackrock and Monkstown in Dublin in the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown area. It is best known for its beach and bathing areas, beside a Martello Tower on the Dublin Bay seashore. The beach currently has an International
SEAPOINT – SALTHILL – MONKSTOWN I was very far away from the people in the photograph and there was a degree of camera shake which result in some blur. Actually the man is using a tennis racquet to propel tennis balls into the Irish Sea for the dog to chase and recover. Seapoint is a small seafront area between Blackrock and Monkstown in Dublin in the Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown area. It is best…
