5 Tips for Salesforce Data Backups
Accidents are going to happen. This applies to circumstances with both large and small consequences. A proper data security strategy is going to guard against these potential disruptions to your Salesforce environment, but it will also prepare for these worst-case scenarios.
A Salesforce data backup will help restore your system to operations and reduce the amount of redundant work for your team members.
There are far too many potential causes of data loss to confidently eschew this important tool—natural disasters, team member error, system failure, power outages, and many more.
So how can you be sure you are getting the most from your Salesforce data backup?
Here are 5 tips to see the greatest possible return from a Salesforce data backup:
1.      Establish RPO/RTO
2.      Secure Restore Functionality
3.      Select a Type of Backup
4.      Properly Configure Your Settings
5.      Consider Archiving Data
1. Establish RPO/RTO
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) refers to the maximum period of data your company is willing to lose in the event of a data disaster.
A Recovery Time Objective (RTO) relates to how fast you can recover from the moment a data disaster occurs to the moment your company is able to return to normal operations.
These can be configured in your Salesforce data backup tool.
2. Secure Restore Functionality
Backing up your system data is only half of the battle. You must also be able to recover that data and restore it into your live environment. A Salesforce data backup that also provides recovery functionality will cover all these bases.
A Salesforce data backup and restore option that integrates with the rest of your application lifecycle management tools will provide the greatest benefits.
3. Select a Type of Backup
Choosing the right type of data backup will keep your storage needs at a manageable level while providing proper coverage.
There are four types of backups to choose from:
·        Full Backup: Entirety of data and metadata
·        Incremental Backup: Select incremental changes since previous backup
·        Normal Backup: Selected data objects as defined in backup configuration
·        Hierarchical Backup: All relationships corresponding to the selected data objects and associated relationships
4. Properly Configure Your Settings
Properly configured settings will stipulate which data sets are essential to cover so you aren’t left with outdated important information.
These types of settings will include the retention period (which stipulates how long your Salesforce data backup will store data) as well as which sets of data and metadata will be included in the scope of the backup.
It’s important to keep government regulations in mind when selecting which types of data will be backed up and how long with will be kept in your system.
5. Consider Archiving Data
Archiving is another method of storing data that can reduce the amount of information stored within your backups. A quality Salesforce data backup tool will also provide this capability.
Data archiving is the process of identifying data that is no longer used, moving it out of the production system, and storing it in long-term storage.

The cost of data loss can be extremely high. First, some potential business opportunities may not present themselves if your company’s marketing strategy is based on contact information. Secondly, an entire project may be delayed if all the data is not available. Lastly, recover of data can’t take place if the data is not being backed or if the backup were lost and so there would be a financial cost associated with those as well.
