Silverleaf: Chapter 13--Unlucky Numbers
Another chapter of Silverleaf, sponsored by Ben! Please let him know if you’re enjoying! I am! You can find the whole Silverleaf series here.
“Hotaru,” Ms. Hino said it sharply but not unkindly, “Are you with us?”
Hotaru looked up from the wood grain of her desk that she had been studying, and gave a nod that she hoped would pass muster. Of course she hadn’t been paying attention, and she hadn’t been doing a very good job of faking it either.
“The ethics of sourced information, how you verify it, how you get it--”
Hotaru wished she hadn’t started listening. If only she hadn’t dropped the letter. If only no one had picked it up. If only it hadn’t been Cere.
“--and who you get it from--”
Maybe she could be reasoned with. Cere was part of Chibiusa’s group, and if she could be friends with someone as sunny and kind as Chibiusa, there had to be something of that same kindness in her. Hotaru was...a nice girl, wasn’t she? Her father told her often that she was intelligent and wonderful, and he was a nationally celebrated scientist. Ms. Tenoh seemed to like her too, and all the girls in school thought she was terribly handsome and dashing. Ms. Kaioh said she had a rather natural aptitude with the viola, despite having little opportunity for recital as a child.
She sighed. She was hoping Cere would cut her a break because her father liked her and two teachers were nice.
Hotaru Tomoe truly was pathetic.
Sakiko shook her arm. “Hotaru, what is going on with you?”
Hotaru was broken from her whirlpool of despair. Sakiko looked at her with concern and confusion, the rest of the girls in the classroom pairing off to do some activity that had completely missed Hotaru’s notice.
It could certainly do no harm to tell Sakiko, not when Cere had an entire letter’s worth of her feelings.
“I’m in trouble, Saki.” She put her hand on Sakiko’s arm.
She pulled over her desk and put her head close to Hotaru’s. “What’s wrong?”
“I have to tell you something,” she fiddled with her pen and looked off for a moment, “I...I have a crush on Chibiusa Purisesu. And--”
“Duh.” Sakiko rolled her eyes, but then giggled excitedly, “Are you going to ask her to the dance?”
“Oh god no, Saki, I’m…”
A loser. Sheltered. Scarred up. Thin. Pale. I look like Edward Scissorhands got a schoolgirl makeover. And Chibiusa is rosy-cheeked and funny and--
“Nice? Interesting? A good student?” Sakiko looked at her incredulously.
“I wrote her a letter,” Hotaru did not bother trying to dissuade Sakiko from complimenting her. Sakiko had been her friend and champion since they met that first day, “I wasn’t going to give it to her! I just...needed to say something.”
Sakiko sucked her teeth. “And you gave it to her? I mean it can’t be that--”
“No!” Hotaru leaned in closer, whispering harshly. “Cere found it.”
Sakiko’s eyes grew wide. “Cere?! It’s worse than I thought.” She sat back in her chair. “Maybe you can transfer schools.”
“Thanks, Saki.” She crossed her arms and slid down in her chair.
Sakiko did not pay attention to Hotaru’s pouting, just took her pencil down to her notebook and began to draw a circle, over and over again, staring at it intently while Hotaru looked on. Sakiko often joked about being able to see the future, and Hotaru was never sure if it was a joke or not--she did, sometimes, know how people were going to be, but this could just the same be that unique quality that Sakiko’s youthful shyness had given her, the one of incredible observation. She’d made Hotaru for lower-class than the other girls immediately, which hadn’t surprised Hotaru, and for having spent a lot of time out of school, which did.
Sakiko bit her lip and looked up. “I don’t think she’s told Chibiusa. Not yet.”
Hotaru thought for a moment. “Maybe we can talk to her?”
It was there, that glimmer of hope, the one she’d tried to avoid all her years in the hospital, but that had grown even more stubbornly since she’d been told she would grow up.
Sakiko looked at her with a mix of pity and false cheer, nodding. “Sure. We’ll--we’ll ask her to give it back.”
___
Sometimes, Minako Aino did not understand herself. Or worse, she did understand herself, and had to live with all the understanding of every stupid thing she did. She lectured Haruka on dating and not getting hung up on one particular woman, but at least Haruka had gone on a date with Michiru.
Mina had wanted to go out with Rei for years, but all she seemed to manage was a rough and bawdy sort of flirt, the kind Mina excelled at, and that most of the people she dated liked.
But Rei was not those sort of people. There was something about her, beyond the fun of teasing her, that Mina couldn’t seem to get away from. If Mina was sweet, and bright, than Rei was spice, and smoke. Where Mina was a river, Rei was a highway, and the differences in them only seemed to make them belong side by side all the more.
As Mina saw it, anyway. Haruka certainly watched a lot of movies where that seemed to be the case.
Haruka. She’d told Mina that Rei had to know at least some of how she felt, and it was stupid not to just ask her out. Mina mostly told Haruka that she spent an awful lot of time sitting on the couch watching (and arguing about) The Bachelor with her cat for someone who seemed to know so much about dating.
But just because she didn’t want to hear it from Haruka didn’t make it wrong. Rei had to know something, had to feel the strange desperation Mina felt every time they were near each other, like a lost sailor stretching his hand out toward land.
But she did nothing. She did exactly what she told Haruka not to do. She let herself be paralyzed by her own feelings.
And she didn’t even have a cat to sit on the couch with her.
But what Haruka did have, that Mina did not, was someone to look out for her on the dating circuit
She looked up from her desk to the students in their groups, practicing scenes to be presented at the end of the week. It was always an interesting thing, for Mina, to see what the girls picked when left to their own devices, when they looked through the slim volumes that lined the long wall, reading through Ibsen and Williams and Chekov to find something that spoke to them.
Mina tipped back in her chair and watched. Was she ever so young? It seemed far away now. Even college seemed far away now, though it hadn’t been that long, and she saw thirty on the horizon, and the notion of it got less terrifying as it grew closer, but still, it filled her with the inspiration to do something, and the chances of stardom were behind her. How she’d squandered the time where who her date might be to a dance and what grade she might get on a test were her greatest concerns. But, you can’t tell teenagers to enjoy the age, and so Mina never tried, and she figured this was part of the reason she was well-liked in the school.
She looked over at a group of girls in the corner, whispering and giggling in that covert way Mina saw from time to time, eyes darting around the room as if they were sneaking in the shadows.
Mina was pretty sure that wasn’t any scene she knew of, and even if it was, they needed to learn how to project.
“Cere!” she called over, “you have some deep secret of the theater you’re sharing with your team? Some edge you want to share with the class, or?”
Cere turned to her, smiling, the small Cs of the Chanel earrings in her ears glistening in the light. There was something about Cere that put MIna off, though she could never place it. She was a smart girl, and could lead a crowd, but there was something about her that was too sharp, the edge of a knife you were afraid to handle.
“Sorry, Miss Aino,” she bared her teeth, the petal pink of her lip gloss parting to display perfect pearls, “I was only so excited for the dance. I can’t stop thinking about it.”
Mina disbelieved her, but it hardly mattered. She’d gotten her attention, and the girls all turned back to their printed lines, standing and reciting words they knew but did not yet understand, the tender excitement of their newness to the world brighter than the shakiness of inexperience.
The dance, of course. It was all anyone could think about, and why wouldn’t it be?
Maybe she’d call up the hottest girl she knew, an ex girlfriend who was a dancer in a club out by the west end, the one with the dark hair and flashing eyes and lithe body. Maybe Rei would see her and her nose would twitch with jealousy. Maybe Rei would wish she’d come with Mina. Maybe she’d ask Mina to dance.
Mina snorted at her own stupidity. Rei Hino would never admit she had been wrong about anything, ever, in her life.
Maybe she’d go by herself, and tell Rei how she felt, once and for all.
The bell rang Mina from her own high teenage drama. “Okay, tomorrow I want to see blocking! Think about it for 5 minutes before class, at least. Pretend for me. It’s called acting.”
The girls giggled as they streamed toward the door, books slipping into bags, Cere chatting again to her friends, but giving a last sly smile to Mina that chilled her, just a touch, and maybe it was in the way that Mina saw the reflection of her own occasional childhood cruelties in her eyes.
Maybe she wouldn’t go to the dance at all.
She shook her head, laughing at herself. Whatever she did or however she went, she’d wear the tightest dress she could get away with, maybe the hot pink one with the sequins across the front, and she’d laugh and carry on and be charming and interesting and everyone would speak about how terribly charismatic she was, and inside she’d be staring at Rei and reaching out to her and sinking inside, and only Haruka would know, and only Haruka would see her cry, however little and small the tears were.
She wished she’d just decided to go with Haruka, if she couldn’t go with Rei. She had brought Haruka as her date last year, and Haruka had gotten her a corsage, and they had danced, and laughed, and confiscated a flask or two, and gone to McDonald’s late at night, still in their fine formalwear. It had been a wonderful night.
And because it had been wonderful, she owed Haruka better than her as a date.
Besides, like Rei was so great, she shrugged.
And she had done Haruka a good deed, in this. This girl was athletic too, cute and sporty, a college runner who had never gotten to Haruka’s level of competition but had enjoyed herself and spoke of it fondly. She was kind and gregarious, and she would make Haruka laugh. She’d just broken off something serious, too. She’d be a great date for the dance. They could be fun for each other.
She picked up the phone and fiddled through her contacts, trying to remember her last name, clearing her throat as she lit upon the right picture on the screen, and pressed it to her ear. She popped to her feet as the phone rang, looking out the window at the cool breeze whistling through the trees.
A click.
“Hey Elsa! This is Mina, we met at that pool party in June? Yeah, with the inflatable taco,” she laughed, “I don’t know if you’re out and about yet, but I know someone…”

While its still March, let me introduce to my little bug babies from my crossover fic, Kamen Rider Thunderbirds X3 (yes I noticed the watermark is from 2022 since I made those pictures during November. But now I have the time to show them off XD)
Click on “keep reading” for a quick info for each of the characters (from left to right) ^^
@uniwolfcorn @teapotteringabout @skymaiden32 @knyee @janetm74 @the-original-sineater @amistrio @thundergeek59 @riallasheng @soniabigcheese @inertplanetary @katblu42 @dreamycloud @godsliltippy @commandermac @kamenriderserotonin
Yuuki Tsugami (Kamen Rider Agito)- The brave and kind young man with psychic powers. Much like his father, he’s really good at committing to his double-life role, to the point that most people (aside of his friends) could not distinguish from his silent, noble warrior of Agito to his happy-go-lucky, pun-loving guy personas. The first to jump into battle when monsters are in the vicinity.
Taira Kaoru (Kamen Rider Kuuga)- The optimist with nearly 2000 skills, with the goal of giving people smiles. He’s the go-to guy when his friends needed comfort and getting the spirits up. While he despises the use of violence, he feels it is a necessity to stop monsters from causing harm.
Koji Sumiko (Kamen Rider G3-X)- A half-Japanese and half-British ex-cop, who is a smart and courageous badass. When his mind is put into work, he’s a serious hacker, operator and fighter. When off duty, he’s laidback, chill (most of the time) and the type to crack a good joke or two. Though, he does get irritated when there’s chaos in the room, sometimes.
Recko Ashihara (Kamen Rider Gills)- The serious one and the “Reality Hammer” of the group. Although he has trust issues with people, he always follows his friends and not afraid to speak the truth when he feels the situation needs it. He also has a low-content woldog companion named Raider.
Tensai Kiryu (Kamen Rider Build)- The eccentric narcissist but good hearted genius of the Rider gang. While his ways of invention and problem solving could be described as chaotic and he’s a certified troll, he will do anything to keep his friends and everyone around him safe and kick some baddies’ ass for Love and Peace.
Sakiko Hino (Kamen Rider OOO)- The “big sister” and the voice of reason. Sweet and fierce, her love for adventure and her deep caring for her friends made her the person that keeps everything together when times go sore. She got super-strength that she had inherited from her grandmother, which she’s a bit embarrassed about it.
Leo Hidari and Soren (Kamen Rider W)- Two in one Rider, a pair of expert detectives from an obscure Japanese city of Fuuto. While Leo is the resident half-boiled drama queen of the group, his compassion and empathy is essential when faced with the criminals he arrests. Soren is his close partner with mysterious wind powers, who is an oblivious nerd, but very helpful when it comes to find important information.
Akira Hiden (Kamen Rider Zero One)- The youngest of the group and the CEO of an android company of his family heritage, Hiden Intelligence. Cheerful, caring and humble, he’s the type who tries his best to support his friends no matter how dire the situation is. Even when cracking one of his many terrible puns. He has a sentient android secretary named Izu, who accompanies him and act as his close support.

Ohohoh! Now this girl I had a lot of fun drawing and writing description for! :D
Known as the Nessan (”big sister”) of the Kamen Riders, she’s the type that does not take BS and will Smotherhen (or tease) her friends till her last breath. Yet she’s sweet, kind, caring and almost purely selfless, knowing what her friends need and is willing to listen and give some advice in life (that includes her philosophy of tomorrow’s underpants). Too bad she can’t give proper hugs because she may accidently crush someone thanks to her super strength. She’s so strong that its enough to for her to lift a boulder and throw it a few meters away. Sakiko may not have realized at first, but ever since she and Virgil met, they became the power couple of IR and Kamen Riders.
Her Rider System is consist of Core Medals, colorful animal-themed coins she can insert into her belt and scan it with the O-Scanner to transform. Each color/animal set has a medal for her head, torso and legs. The following sets being, green = insects, yellow = big cats, grey = heavy mammals, blue = sea animals, orange = reptiles and red = birds. If she uses all medals of the same color, she gains a powerful Combo form.
