Syb's 2023 MOTY List!
I had a lot of fun doing this roundup last year! Though it feels like a patchier year than 2022 for great wrestling, there were still a few real standouts that blew my socks clean off. Here's my top 5 recs!
Jay White NJPW Departure Series (Wrestle Kingdom 17 IWGP Heavyweight Belt 04.01.20203, Loser Leaves Japan Match vs. Hikuleo 11.02.2023, Loser Leaves NJPW Match vs. Eddie Kingston 18.02.2023)
It was so hard to pick a single match from this series so I chose not to. The sequence of these really tells a complete story I was fully glued to in real-time. The IWGP WK match I slept on a little bit because everyone was buzzing over Omega vs. Ospreay, but I have to say when I finally watched it, it has wormed its way into my brain and has not stopped chewing. The Hikuleo match broke me a little for the last offered too-sweet. And if you forced me to pick a match of the three to recommend, it would be Eddie vs. Jay. There’s something special about Eddie being the man with so much integrity, so much love for puroresu, that he almost made me believe Jay would fight for New Japan and win. I’ll close this by saying it felt really graceful that Jay got to put an endpoint on his time in New Japan, and tell a little story with it. I’m not sure most wrestlers get the chance for whatever reason when their contract ends, but this felt like a beautiful Shakespearean tragedy, and a great way to end a killer run in NJPW.
Yota Tsuji vs. Ren Narita (G1 Climax 33, 18.07.2023)
The most memorable G1 Climax match for me by a long shot. Physical, deranged, so many gorgeous spots (that I will miss dearly from Narita specifically as he heads off to do…whatever it is that you can call House of Torture spots). I rewatched this three times. I loved the tie booking for the Reiwa Three Muskateers, it made A-block super fun. I was really hopeful after Tsuji’s backstage comments that they’d make a story out of Narita shedding Shibata’s shadow…alas for the booking that wasn’t.
Saki Akai Retirement Match (Tag match with Yukio Sakaguchi & Hideki Okatani, vs. Kazusada Higuchi & Naomichi Marufuji & Miyu Yamashita, 12.11.2023)
There is so much to miss about Saki Akai. Although I honestly and sincerely wish more wrestlers would retire younger and let their bodies rest (or at least do a soft retirement and then come back to do bullshit) – god, I’m going to miss her. She’s been a mainstay on the DDT roster for as long as I’ve been watching and before, and carries the intergender work with unparalleled grace. This match was booked as a unique treat for me; who had an Eruption moment back when Sakaguchi and Higuchi had their singles match, and who loves both Marufuji and Yamashita.
Swerve Strickland vs. Hangman Page Texas Deathmatch (AEW Full Gear 18.11.2023)
TOXIC!!! YAOI!!! DEATHMATCH!! INSANE!!! This match probably would have made it on the list for the “stapling my son’s drawing and then drinking the blood from the wound” spot alone, good god. If people didn’t believe Swerve was a mega-star before this match, they surely do now. Match that made me dissolve into monkey noises, and easily my favourite AEW match this year.
Mask vs. Mask 5-Way Cage Survival (Dragon Kid vs Shun Skywalker vs Strong Machine J vs Ultimo Dragon vs Diamante, 02.07.2023)
Dragongate is honestly a promotion I’d love to have the time and attention span to carve out some more space for. Luckily I do have puro friends who are willing to catch me up on the dynamics so I can swing by for banger matches like these. And wow, holy shit, this was a cagematch for the age. Pulling on the drama of Dragon Kid who promised the survival of his older mentor Ultimo Dragon – leading into the personal beef of Strong Machine J and Diamante, and crystallizing to another horrible moment from one of wrestling’s best working heels right now, Shun Skywalker. This match had it all!
Honorable Mentions
Eddie Kingston vs. Claudio Castagnoli (AEW Grand Slam 2023, 20.09.2023)
Jun Kasai & El Desperado vs. Masashi Takeda & Rina Yamashita Thumbtack Board & Razor Cross Board Alpha Death (Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS, 11.08.2023)
Hiromu Takahashi vs. Kazuki Hirata"Let's Have Fun!!" What Will Happen!? Fun Death Match (DDT Ultimate Party 2023, 12.11.2023)

Under no authority but my own, I'm going to five out end of year wrestling awards.
Award one: Wrestler of the year
Self explanatory but this aware is coming from an entertainment perspective as well as in ring. Who made me want to tune in each and every week?
Award goes to: Athena
In addition to being the best Women's wrestling in the West and one of the best in the world, she's also really funny. There is no wrestler I've enjoyed being on my screen more than Athena this year, so I believe there is no person more deserving of receiving my 2023 wrestler of the year award.
Honourable mentions: Saki Kashima, Toni Storm, Saki Akai, Tam Nakano

CORE Pro presents The Co-Op 2023 Senior Division Slam-O-Rama 03/30/23 Pico Union Project - Los Angeles, California Attendance: 500+ Super No Vacancy
Match #1
Mike Jackson vs. Sheepherder Luke - Mike Jackson controlled the wrist of Sheepherder Luke and walked the ropes until Marcus Mathers ran out and pushed Jackson off the top rope and to the floor. Winner: No Contest
- Marcus Mathers, Kerry Morton, and Starboy Charlie attacked Luke inside the ring while Brogan Finlay, Nick Wayne, Kenzie Paige, and Kylie Paige worked over Mike Jackson on the floor. Billie Starkz dove off the top rope to the outside with a somersault senton on the bloodied Mike Jackson while Mathers and Starboy held Luke in position for a devastating chair shot from Morton. The locker room emptied and chased the attackers off as two of the oldest active wrestlers in history were left in a bloody heap.
Match #2
Aja Kong vs. Sumie Sakai - Aja Kong went for the spinning backfist on Sumie Sakai, but Sakai ducked, dropkicked Kong in the knee, and cradled her for a pin attempt but Aja Kong kicked out at one. Kong connected with the spinning backfist and got the traditional Senior Division two count pinfall victory. Winner: Aja Kong
Match #3
Jeff Jarrett vs. David Arquette - Sonjay Dutt slid Paul Walter Hauser's Golden Globe to Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett went to swing it but David Arquette was ready and instead cracked Jarrett over the head with Arquette's 2000 Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Arquette made the cover but Jarrett somehow kicked out at one. Arquette went for the Golden Globe but Jarrett hit him with The Stroke onto the award and got the pinfall. Winner: Jeff Jarrett
Match #4
Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Masakatsu Funaki - Dr. Wagner Jr. wasted no time opening back up the cut Masakatsu Funaki suffered in his earlier match with Jeff Cobb. Wagner went for the Michinoku Driver, but Funaki slipped behind him and spiked Wagner with the Hybrid Blaster tombstone and the two count. Winner: Masakatsu Funaki
Match #5
Curry Man, Psicosis, and Damien 666 vs. Great Sasuke, Tiger Mask IV, and Ultimo Dragon - Curry Man had Tiger Mask IV up for the Spicy Drop, but Great Sasuke and Ultimo Dragon saved their partner with a pair of spinning kicks. Tiger Mask IV hit the tiger suplex on Curry Man to earn his team the win. Winners: Great Sasuke, Tiger Mask IV, and Ultimo Dragon

hello! :) i wanted to start watching tjpw for a long time, do you have any match recommendations? or maybe a wrestler to follow? thank you 💕
very good choice imo!!! okay so. full disclosure. i do not have money so i am not subscribed to tjpw <3 i consume mostly through tde gifs on twitter and what matches i can find on youtube. THAT BEING SAID
there are a lot of free matches on youtube!!! i haven't seen all of them, and i haven't seen a lot of the more prestigious matches (even when those do get uploaded, i am...lacking in the energy to engage with them yet so i haven't seen a lot TT__TT) but some of my favorites are:
su yung v maho kurone! this one is cheating a bit, su isn't a regular roster member and maho is no longer with tjpw unfortunately and there's only a highlights video up on yewchube. but also its very good is the thing about it. i love gimmick characters and i love when women are out of their minds and also undead. they get zombie married. its very fun
su yung and saki v makoto and asuka! (asuka also goes by veny, because as you might know there is an asuka in doubleyew doubleyew ee as well, so keep that in mind) a fun match with some VERY good wrestling and also i love women! GOOD MATCH! FUN MATCH!
maki itoh, miyu yamashita, and raku v haruna neko, shoko nakajima, and hyper misao! if you want to see what tjpw has to offer you, this is a good match for that! hijinx! big teams full of fun interpersonal relationships! miyu kicking people very hard! what's not to love!
suzume, haruna neko, and yuka sakazaki v nodoka tenma, kamiyu, and arisu endo! MISCHIEF
mina shirakawa v kamiyu! mina is in stardom now and i haven't had the opportunity to see a ton of her matches but i think this one is a fun heroic one for her AND a great exhibition of kamiyu's fun tweener role
if you want to check out wrestle universe, where tjpw is hosted, i'm afraid my knowledge of events and matches is very limited but i think honestly? you can throw a dart at any event and come across at least one good match. its a really fun promotion!! the tokyo princess cup events are where you can see a lot of women in action and its always a good show, i think 8 was the most recent one? Big Fun! Good Time! hm. i have the september 15 2021 event listed a lot on my matches i liked list so if you get a chance, look into that one i suppose...at wrestle princess 2, october 9 last year i think, miyu v maki for the title happened and basically any time you have a chance to see a match between those two i think you should take it. october 23 2021 event seems very fun and very good...this isn't the most helpful but this is a starting point if you have the universe! which i do not </3 wrestle princess and the tokyo princess cup are big events so if you want to start somewhere, one of those seems like a sound place to dive right in
as for wrestlers you should follow! hm. miyu yamashita is the ace of tokyo joshi pro, and maki itoh is, i think its safe to say, its breakout star. they are also a tag team now which owns! definitely keep up with those two. saki akai (saki-sama in tjpw, goth queen) is one of ddtpro's staples so i think she's a good one to keep an eye on. HMMM...hyper misao is one of tokyo joshi pro's most versatile and talented storytellers and wrestlers! she's SUPER fun, a true performer, and one of those wrestlers that puts their whole heart into everything they do. i love her and i think everyone should. its hard not to! she's great. yuka sakazaki and shoko nakajima are both workhorses, at most shows you will definitely see them doing something! you can look to miyu for what the promotion considers important, but if you want to see the blood that makes tjpw run, those two are some of the best representatives of what you will see from it regularly. like, the basics of what tokyo joshi pro is, you know? i think that's important. in that vein, i recommend...well almost everyone but specifically raku and pom harajuku. they have a very specific Silly Girl vibe that is just SO fun. hm...arisu endo is REALLY good for as short a time as its been since her debut. again, my knowledge is intensely sporadic so i'm probably not the best person to ask for anything concrete but while you ARE asking me, i'm also recommending miu watanabe, veny/asuka and yuki kamifuku, and hikari noa. veny goes between a lot of promotions (including chocopro ^_^) but she's INCREDIBLE everywhere she goes and kamiyu is one of the most delightful bastards you can imagine and they are a fantastic and very homoerotic team. hikari noa does more hardcore stuff if that is what you are into, i don't know about you but i LOVE seeing women in hardcore matches because i believe in equality <3 feminism is when women get to fall into barbed wire a lot imo. and miu watanabe.......is cool :) i just really really really like her she is pink and baseball themed and she has a swing move that can pick up to two women and its so fun and i like her. OH same for nodoka tenma who i am in love with. this is...too many names. this is not helpful at all. i am very sorry
#if you go through the links you can see tjpw's official channel and see for yourself what they have#i have a spotty knowledge of tjpw and a weird relationship to watching matches im actually interested in#i love tjpw deeply but this is through sheer willpower!!! conviction!!! more than any actual expertise#it's...pretty embarrassing! i'm sorry i can't be of more use! i believe that youtube user joshizzle/operation rainfall#has covered some of the storylines in tjpw if you want to know more about those. i can't vouch for them being good#i have yet to watch them because i'm too tired to engage in something that interesting yet but its something?#i think...wrestlling you can usually jump in somewhere and figure it out but tjpw's english translations are#usually done on twitter. you'll notice if you go to their events on youtube they don't have captions#so if you're not experiencing it in real time then you will be going on a LOT of vibes which is what i do#but i definitely wouldnt consider that the ideal way to experience it#wow...this...THIS...was not at all helpful...!!! i'm so SO sorry i hope that you can find a way into tjpw#against all odds i like it a lot and i enjoy it and i hope you can do that too!!! even if i couldn't help !

If RGG Studio ever collaborates with a pro wrestling company again, it probably will be with New Japan, but it really should be DDT, if only because the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship is practically begging for a whole suite of substory horseshit. It starts with Ichiban agreeing to win the belt off, I don’t know, Saki Akai as part of a business publicity stunt but then getting intermittently attacked by a bunch of DDT wrestlers trying to win the belt from him, and it ends with him throwing a garbage can over himself to hide, only for a ref to show up out of nowhere to count the pin for the garbage can.
And then like fifty hours, two party members, two betrayals, and a character death later, he stops by a restaurant only for a ref to show up out of nowhere again, start counting, and award his confused ass the belt, as he’s pinned the previous champion, the chair he was sitting on.

No, no, no. I trust you way more on Goto than my faulty memory. I highly recommend Kaiju Mono as it is a delightfully absurd love note to the genre. It also has Saki Akai as a femme fatale along with cameos from Sanshiro Takagi and others.
I will see if I can find a copy to watch then! And speaking of faulty memory, I forgot about Ms. Saiki as Buff Tinkerbell in Saber, I'm a disgrace to my profession (tokusatsu wrestler identifier).

Wrestler Of The Year 2017 | Yoshiko
As the year 2017 comes to an end the Squared Circle Sirens teams will be highlighting different wrestlers from across the globe that we feel have made an impact over the past 365 days! Today we will be looking at Yoshiko!
To some, this is a controversial pick, due to an incident that happened a couple years ago but Yoshiko’s fellow wrestlers and a majority of fans have moved on from the grey issue.
This year Yoshiko was in many places, her home promotion SEADLINNNG, Oz Academy, ROAD FC (Korean mma federation, Sei Za (women’s budo promotion), a return to DDT, and a couple others. Yoshiko has had a handful of top of the card feuds from this summer’s clash with Rina Yamashita to becoming a draw for international wrestling fans to watch/hate watch ROAD FC’s youtube live streams of events, ROAD FC is so invested in Yoshiko that they’ve essentially made their new women’s heavyweight division just for her.
While her feud with Rina Yamashita ended in mutual respect Yoshiko’s clashes with Tsubasa Kuragaki and Saki Akai have ended in more violent ways. The big feather in the cap for Yoshiko’s 2017 was main eventing the biggest drawing crowd in recent joshi wrestling memory, a whopping 3,789 fans at Yokohama Bunka Gymnasium saw her dethrone Hiroyo Matsumoto as the Oz Academy Openweight Champion. Her first main event at Korakuen Hall as champion drew 998 fans so if this keeps up Yoshiko could keep this title well into next year and could possibly get more.

CORE presents The Co-Op 2023 - Update #02
In this second update, we will announce the cards for night two of the CORE Co-Op 2023 taking place on March 31st 2023 from the Pico Union Project in Los Angeles, California. Updates and full card announcements for our events on April 1st and April 2nd will follow.
March 31st
Johnny Ace's Dynamic Dames
Legendary pro-wrestler and wrestling executive Johnny Ace will exclusively be appearing at The Co-Op during wrestling’s biggest weekend. As the man that laid the foundation for the “women’s revolution,” Johnny Ace presents his handpicked all women’s wrestling card filled with both current and future stars.
In the opening match SoCal independent wrestling standout Johnnie Robbie goes toe-to-toe with a mysterious new wrestler managed by UltraMantis Black known only as Giant Baba Yaga.
A veteran of many classic six man tag team battles in the rings of All Japan Pro-Wrestling, Johnny Ace put together this special six man tag match when Kenzie Paige and Billie Starkz will team with Kenzie’s little sister Kylie Paige to take on the very formidable team of Kamille, KiLynn King, and Ashley D’Amboise.
Next up, representing the Jericho Appreciation Society, Anna Jay and Tay Melo will do battle with CMLL’s Stephanie Vaquer and Gatoh Move’s Mei Suruga. Both very promising young wrestlers, Vaquer and Suruga teamed together previously during Mei’s tour for the CMLL promotion in the fall of 2022.
The following match will see AAA’s Sexy Star square off against joshi wrestling freelancer Unagi Sayaka. Since departing STARDOM and entering what she calls her “gyan period,” Unagi Sayaka has taken her talents around the Japanese independent wrestling scene with renewed intensity and focus, and will look to do the same in America.
In a rare singles match between these two Wrestle Universe competitors, Saki Akai will face off with Yuki Kamifuku in our semi-main event.
And in the main event, the next chapter will be written in the rivalry between Athena and “The Magical Girl” Yuka Sakazaki as Athena will team with Raychell Rose to take on the team of Yuka Sakazaki and Mizuki, better known to TJPW fans as the Magical Sugar Rabbits.
