There was never a rat in the Van Der Linde Gang
I'm gonna be honest. Micah is a conniving snake. But there was never a rat.
Why did Blackwater fail? Dutch killed a mother in cold blood and then a massacre happened. The money was a set up and Dutch took the bait. Pinkertons swarmed the area and even Landon Rickets was there.
How did they find them at Horseshoe? By chance the Pinkertons found Arthur and Jack fishing, but was it really by chance? What happens in chapter 2?
A bar fight where fucking everyone in town is there, which afterwords Dutch is there
You sprang Sean free and there are bounty hunters who flee, you seriously don't think they talked??
Oh yeah, ARTHUR AND MICAH SHOOT UP A FUCKING TOWN
John killing Micah led to Ross and Fordham finding him. Any of the missions I mentioned practically led Milton and Ross to finding Arthur near Horseshoe.
How did the Gray/Braithewaite scheme fail?
The Grays knew what they were doing and so did the Braithewaites. They played both families instead of just one and instead of LYING LOW. Dutch's vanity, ego and sense of wanting petty revenge against Confederate white trash caused Sean to be killed and Jack to be abducted.
How did Saint Denis fail?
Dutch played Bronte in his own city, refused a favor(you do NOT refuse the Mob asking a favor) which caused the set up, then Bronte's murder and finally the Bank Robbery which they knew they were there.
The common theory is someone from the gang snitched and talked to the Pinkertons. Who exactly ? Micah ? Well, Agent Milton said they picked up Micah AFTER they came back from Guarma, so it could not have been him. Molly ? Again, Milton said they did pick her up (not mentioned when), but she did not say anything. I have also read theories that it might have been Agibail who snitched to which my response is - pure BS.
The truth is, nobody snitched, nobody talked. Yes. Yet the reaction of the Pinkertons was insanely fast, as if they knew the robbery was going to go down. How you wonder ? Well, it's simple. It's a long one, but have a read.
From the very beginning of the game, Dutch has been claiming that they are a few steps ahead of everyone else, but his arrogance proved to be the downfall. You see, the Pinkertons are not as dull and foolish as Dutch claim them to be, they are extremely efficient as a detective agency proven by the fact that they tracked down Arthur in Valentine. Now, when the gang moved to Clemens Point near Rhodes, the Pinkertons lost their trail for a while. However the gang contradicted their own plan of staying low by creating a huge chaos in Rhodes after killing both the Gray's and the Braithwaite's (best mission in the game btw). As soon as the word spread of the massacre of both the families in Rhodes all over the place, the Pinkertons connected the dots and knew that it could be the Van Der Lind gang who created the fuss and if so, they must be camping somewhere near Rhodes. Nonetheless, they found the gang hideout after sniffing around, a day or two after the Braithwaite massacre. At this point Agent Milton knew these bunch of people would not be too hard to find as all you need to do is to sniff around an area where there has been murder and madness.
Now to Saint Denis, Dutch dismissed Hosea's idea and went after Angelo Bronte just after the failed trolley station robbery. If he listened to Hosea, hit the bank at once, then vanished, the Pinkertons would have never caught on and they would be harvesting mango's in Tahiti. But a failed trolley station robbery followed by a huge shootout in the city killing dozens of cops then followed by a kidnapping and murder of the most powerful man in the city was enough chaos for the Pinkertons to realize it's the Van Der Lind gang. So they knew the gang is around this city and increased security in Saint Denis hoping that the next time they attempt a robbery, it would be the endgame. That is why as soon as the bank robbery started, the Pinkertons were all over the place.
It is also easy to explain why Hosea was captured and Abigail escaped. While causing the distraction, both of them did not realise how fast the response is going to be. The Pinkertons caught Hosea as his face along with other male members of the gang was known to them, specially Hosea, Dutch and Arthur as they have been the oldest members of the gang. But Abigail at this point was unknown to them so it was easy for her to walk right past them without them realizing.
Why did the gang fell?
Micah got into Dutch's ear, Hosea died and Arthur got sick.
Micah promised him riches and the glorious scores that appealed to Dutch's ego and vanity. But he wasn't the rat.
If he did rat, he was playing Dutch and the Pinkertons to get the Blackwater money and the money for turning in Dutch.
However.
It was all Dutch.
Dutch. killed Cornwall in broad fucking daylight. Arthur sprung John out of prison, they blew up a fucking bridge, Dutch led the Natives to their doom, Colm's execution turned into a bloodbath, an attack on the Oil Refinery which led to the deaths of Colonel Favors and Eagle Flies and to top it all with robbing the military. It's no fucking wonder the Pinkertons found them.
There was no rat. The Pinkertonâs were actually just good at their jobs. Micah being a rat makes no sense if you actually think about it. Thereâs NO WAY the pinkertons would have been ok with the death of Leviticus Cornwall as he was paying their wages. Micah and Dutch planned to kill him together. Thereâs also the fact that Micah straight up killed Pinkertons in the firefight that ensued cornwallâs death. Micah was an asshole but not a rat. Watch that scene with Milton and Arthur againâŠMilton would have most likely let Arthur go with that false information but Arthur decided to attack him. There was never a rat, they got played.
It's a combination of things on why they all failed.
Reason 1. Dutch's vanity and ego. Dutch desperately needed to be seen as this great American hero. He cares more of the thrill of âone last scoreâ itâs all about his ego and how he has to be seen as this Evelyn Millerian figure. This great American Literature hero when heâs really as bad as the greed that he says poisons America. He never cared about the people in the gang. It was the prestige of the name "The VAN DER LINDE Gang" HIM. He wanted to be seen as this infamous outlaw and righteous leader. He didn't care about the people in the gang. Arthur? He was dying and he didn't care. John? He wanted him to hang. Abigail? He left her behind the first chance he got. Micah killed Susan RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM and Dutch didn't care. He considerd Mary-Beth, Pearson and Uncle leaving as a betrayal. Dutch never cared for the people within the VDL Gang. He cared what they could do for him and the glory they could bring him. It was never of settling down to become farmers, it was always about the thrill of being an outlaw the that great big score.
There are a lot of people who think if Hosea never died, then Dutch never would've lost it. He was always bad. He just had good ways of masking it. Hosea failed at every venture to talk out of getting Dutch to see sense and avoid bloodshed. If Hosea lived, there is a very good chance that Dutch would've lost it and had Hosea killed. Either it would've been an accidental death like he tried by leaving Arthur behind, he would've went into full paranoid mode "You're trying to undermine me and take the group from me" and order Hosea to draw his gun and then shoot him. Like Hosea said "You'll damn us all" and he did.
Reason 2. Loyalty to a fault.
Loyalty held the gang together. Loyalty was what Dutch valued - blind, obedient loyalty. âHe had a plan,â after all.
Doubt broke the gang apart. Dutch became suspicious, uncertain of the faith of even his most dedicated friends. This undermined the entire operation and caused its eventual downfall.
âYouâll betray me, Arthur,â Dutch says, âYouâre the type.â Dutch couldnât be more wrong on that account.
Micah is named by the Pinkertons as a rat, but according to them, he wasnât approached until after theyâd returned from Guarma. So, by that timeline, the Pinkertonâs hadnât needed a rat to foil their plans in Blackwater, or to find Arthur fishing by the side of a stream, or for the bank robbery in Saint Denis.
The Pinkertons always knew where Dutch was and what he was up to. They didnât need a rat, especially not after their return from Guarma. So, why drop Micahâs name?
Well, the Pinkertons knew the gang was scrambling, that they were on the run, and that it was damn near impossible to arrest one of them at a time without a successful rescue of said gang member, ie Micah, John, Abigail and Sean. They are not the local sheriffâs office, after all. They are the federals and they want Dutch Vander Linde done in for good.
Staring down the barrel of a gun, why would a Pinkerton agent spill their collateral to the enemy? Arthur wasnât even asking for any information at the time. Why would this agent, in his dying moments, tell Arthur that Micah was the rat?
Unless the agent knew the gang was on thin ice, and that loyalty was all that was keeping it together. He introduced what he hoped would be a final blow to the gang, accomplishing post-huminously what had been his career goal in life.
Also, why would Micah become an informant after Guarma? What were the promising him? After all, he stuck with Dutch and formed a new gang after Arthur died. He never took a big cut from the government and ran. He was a brown-noser and an asshole, but stood nothing to gain from becoming a rat.
Arthur hated Micah, so he took the bait. He wanted a reason to hate him, to have him kicked out of the gang. Micah was pragmatic and greedy and he hardened Dutchâs humanitarian side - the side that Arthur valued. But, Micah being a rat wasnât the truth.
After all, we know who became a rat - John Marston.
Arthurâs readiness to believe a Pinkertonâs dying words proved the point of the narrative - the gang fell apart because they lost faith in Dutch, and because Dutch grew jealous and fearful as their doubts became apparent.
Loyalty kept the gang together, and its absence tore the gang apart.
Reason 3. "We didn't need a rat. We got sloppier than the town drunk."
The gang was careless. It got sloppy and their overconfidence and ego was their downfall.
Micah wasnât the cause of their downfall he simply hastened it. The game tells you from the opening titles how itâs going to end and why. It mentions that the remaining gangs are being hunted down and destroyed with the word underlined for emphasis. It was always going to end in their demise, it just happened quicker than it would have because they got sloppy, careless, conceited, and arrogant.

The survivors
Sometimes I think about the survivors of the Van Der Linde gang scattered across the map and beyond, each of them carrying the same wound that was left with the break of their family and how they try to remember them.
Both Trelawny and Tilly lives in Saint-Denis, I wonder if they ever bumped into one another a few years later, looking at each other across the street, just trying to process the face before them and the time and people that it pulls them back to. The happiest yet the most tragic time for both of them.
They probably crossed the road, meeting half way, their respective parntners holding eye contact for a moment and knowing immediately "oh, they know each other from... that" allowing the two the moment.
I wonder if Tilly cried to Trelawny , telling him how it felt to be there in the end after he left, finally having someone who understands her, and I wonder if Trelawny offered to hunt the others down like he used to. One last chase, one last time searching for the Van Der Lindes, whatever remained of them.
Mary-Beth was probably shocked when she saw Trelawny standing there in Valentine, waving at her with his usual charm, yet a bit of sorrow hidden in his voice. He probably strolled up to her, told her about Tilly and asked her to come visit as they walked together down to Horseshoe Overlook, Mary-Beth telling him about the adventures they had there.
Trelawny probably didn't struggle to find Pearson in Rhodes either, the hollow man with the picture of the old gang on the wall, who could barely look down the street without thinking of the hole in poor Sean's head and who would daily walk down to Clemens Point just to remind himself.
Pearson agrees to meet with Tilly and it becomes a monthly thing, often joined by Mary-Beth. They were held together by their common trauma, their unusual common past.
Trelawny was probably the one who found out about Karen and the fact she had drunken herself to death and had to hang his head low and let Tilly know.
Strauss was beaten to death, he had read that in the newspapers, Uncle was a bit harder to find, staying out of trouble yet also ending up in debt with some ugly men Trelawny could call in favour with. They talk and he brings him to TIlly, but they don't keep in touch.
For the remaining it took years, Trelawny searched up and downand at some point, early 1907 he found Charles fighting in Saint Denis. He told Charles about Tilly and was visibly able to see a weight being lifted off the man's shoulders, but he was too scared of brining back any bad luck to the happy Tilly and stayed away.
John had covered his, Jack's and Abigail's tracks from the law and him. Sadie he found out too late had been in the country but made her way to South Africa to work.
Trelawny stands left, he found them, just like he had done for years, except there is none left now, only John, John who has disappeared into thin air, a bad dream with a bittersweet aftertaste. He doesn't know what to do so he does the one thing he is good at, searching. His wife tells him to stop and although he shortly tries he can't, he too misses the past and wants it back no matter how much the words Arthur spoke to him telling him to leave and not look back had burned themselves into his skull. Searching is what he does, he can do nothing else.
At some point he finds John, after years he finally finds John's name in the newspaper, except it is too late and the only thing that remains of the man is two headstones with his and his wife's name, Abigail's last name replacing Roberts with Marston.
Jack is there too, he doesn't remember Trelawny, but Trelawny remembers him. He sees John's features in the young man who used to have twenty people there to care for him but because of one man now stood alone, the young man who would hopefully outlive the rest of the gang, except he probably wouldn't as he carried a gun and John's hat.
Trelawny knew then that the boy would suffer the same fate his uncle hat and he knew that a few years from then his search would lead to yet another early grave or a name scratched in the book of a jailor.

Echo Canyon near Deathâs Rock This is one of the most scenic of spots along the entire route of the Pacific Railroad. The Union Pacific, racing to meet the Central Pacific, built through here in the first months of 1869. David Haward Bain, in his book The Old Iron Road, does a wonderful job providing some of the history of this unique and stunningly beautiful area. He covers the origin of the Hastings Cutoff, the trials and tribulations of the Donner-Reed party, as well as anecdotal evidence of others who passed through the canyon.
This would include Mormon saints, daring young riders of the Pony Express, the drivers and coachmen of the Overland Stage, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), and of course the railroad surveyors, graders, and track layers. One image by Richard Koenig; taken October 29th 2011.

Javier and Dutchâs Relationship Analysis
I feel like as a whole, Javier is generally one of the gang members who is under looked in terms of his dynamic with Dutch. Especially considering how critical it is to his character.
First of all, as most people know, Javier met Dutch at an extremely vulnerable time in his life, he knew no English, he was starving, and he was in a country which was actively hostile to him, he was also around 22 when Dutch found him.
This means that he fit neither criteria for Dutchâs usual choice of muscle for the gang. He was weak when he found him, but he was also already an established adult who had his own beliefs and morals in place, he couldnât be groomed like John or Arthur, and he wasnât already in a position to immediately start working for him like Charles or Sean.
At the point of Dutch picking him up, the only thing he had to control Javier was the fact that nobody else would have taken him, Javier even says it himself, heâs so grateful to Dutch because nobody else would take him, and this is where I feel like the understanding of his relationship with Dutch gets lost for a lot of the fandom.
I see the term âblind loyaltyâ flung around for him a lot, but I donât think thatâs the case. Yes, he lets things slide that likes of John and Arthur didnât necessarily, likes of seeing the woman on the boat in the Blackwater job getting shot, but even saying that, Javier doesnât see any of the other things Dutch does.
He is not there when Angelo BrontĂ« is killed, he is not there for most of the Wapiti missions, he doesnât see Dutch killing that woman in Guarma, largely, he doesnât see Dutch doing anything out of the ordinary, and nobody speaks about these events specifically in camp, so itâs very likely Javier didnât even know about them.
He also isnât there for Dutchâs mental decline, so does not see how bad Dutch is getting over the course of the game, he is not personally involved with him in the same way enough to see any of that. All he knows of the situation is that his family is falling apart, and Dutch, the man who has just saved his life, either from death or from being sold as a slave (there is a slave trade for Mexicans in Saint Denis, a place we know Fussar is based in America), is telling him itâs John and Arthurâs fault that everything is going to shit.
Another point against it being âblindâ loyalty, is that Javier does question Dutch, he is one of the first to do so, at Clemens point he will ask Dutch what theyâre doing and express his concerns to him, and he is immediately shot down for it. He visibly becomes nervous when Dutch lashes out at the âdoubtâ, and quickly agrees with him to settle things back out again, Javier does not like to be in a conflict with Dutch. He will question Dutch again on the way back from Guarma, expressing his concerns with Dutch going against the moral compass that is the whole reason Javier so strongly connects with Dutch, and again, Dutch will shoot him down and immediacy berate him for questioning it.
My personal opinion is that Javier has developed an anxious attachment style to Dutch. We know that his parents didnât approve of Javiers actions in the revolution and that they wanted him to live the same life his father did, and overall while he expresses his love for his mother, he also expresses that he does not agree with his parents. Dutch is a parental figure who he believes shares the same views as him, who has taken him in when all odds were against him finding somewhere, and who we have seen gaslight Javier twice just in the time we see them interact in the game.
This is likely something that has happened previously to the game starting, and itâs conditioned Javier into not wanting to upset Dutch in fear of losing his place in the gang, itâs easier to trust him than to be kicked out and have nowhere to go.
Again, this is just a word vomit, donât take anything I say as gospel, this is just my understanding of their dynamic!
As usual asks are always open and I always appreciate them <333

Took me a little longer to ask again, a request maybe.
Something about Kieran Duffy x Reader (gender is up to you). Kieran is just so sweet, poor boy is bulled at camp everytime by almost everyone, he deserves some love (or friendship, platonic shipps exist too!). Maybe something about helping him with his chores or simply by talking with him without antagonizing the poor not an O'Driscoll boy.
Saint Denis
(Kieran Duffy x GN!Reader Fluff)
Your requests are palette cleansers after writing back to back smut
Warnings: none
Kieran left the cold hard comfort of his tent, the sky over Clemens Point tinged lavender with traces of dawn. Seldom were any other people up this early, the occasional good morning exchanged between he and Arthur, Pearson, or Charles, or whoever else was an early riser. Kieran did not skimp out on breakfast, yet he was prone to taking less than his allotted share of stew. He poured himself coffee, staring at his own reflection in the black liquid. The sunken embers of his green eyes stared back at him, and he looked unfavorably upon the scant unshaven stubble on his face. He looked shamefully at the forlorn expression he had adopted as a resting face. He looked away from his reflection in disappointed reprieve, feeling the stubble on his face and wondering if it was too late to tidy himself or just make himself look better for his plans today.
And indeed, it was too late.
âMorning Kieran.â You greeted in that soothingly sweet voice of yours. His shoulders jumped when he realized it was you standing next to him, and oh so closely he might add. You always looked so put together, even in the mornings when everyone else looked as though the night had not been kind to them.
âGood morning, (Name).â He smiled at you bashfully, beginning to feel his stubble again subconsciously. He cursed himself for not cleaning his appearance up the previous day at least.
âHow are you?â You asked, kneeling next to him to serve yourself some stew. The way you bent down so closely to his leg, frankly, had him blushing and clearing his throat.
âUhm, I-Iâm good. How about you?â He said hurriedly. You stood back up straight, eating a spoonful of stew before looking at him.
âIâm good! Excited for our fishing trip!â You shifted your feet where you stood. âI brought my journal for the boat.â
âYour journal? I thought we was gonna fish?â He trailed off, becoming scared that he misinterpreted something when the two of you first planned your hangout.
âWell, yeah, but I thought itâd be nice if I read to you a little from it.â You looked at him, standing far too close to him for comfort with those puppy eyes that made him bend to your will. âAnd yâknow, maybe we can get to teaching ya to read.â You giggled, nudging him on the side, making him jerk. He laughed awkwardly, squeaking out a âyeahâ in the midst of his fluster.
Kieran swore he felt like more of a bumbling fool than usual when he was around you, becoming suddenly more self conscious of how much space he took up, how he moved, how he looked. His fear of looking like an idiot in front of you subsequently forced him into a constant stiffness, crossing his arms over his chest. As fond as he was of you, he couldnât help the way he closed up and became rigid.
âLemme finish up my soup, I wanna get on the lake while itâs still quiet and early!â You exclaimed. He could only nod, noticing just how much he was shaking when he lifted his coffee to his lips and saw how the liquid trembled in the cup.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Both you and Kieran approached the end of the doc where the boat remained tied by a worn rope. In a simple gesture of help, Kieran held your hand as he helped you board the small boat; a gesture that would keep him up at night, giddy and excited. He untied the boat from the doc, pushing the boat off with his foot before hastily climbing on while it was still close.
The two of you looked across at each other, smiling silently to make up for the lack of conversation; you were both too shy and fiddly to start it off. Yet this moment of awkwardness allowed you two a moment to appreciate the serenity of the lake. The oars skated through tranquil water, the water rippling as it parted and made way for you both. Swarms of mosquitoes buzzed over the water, tall grass and reeds framed the shore, you even noticed waterbugs and dragonflies skidding over the surface of the water. The sky was painted orange as the sun began to rise, pushing away the darkness of night skies. Kieran kept rowing until you two reached far enough into the center of the lake.
The moment felt beautiful, on that fresh morning, and a part of you felt at once what it was like to be alive.
Kieran cleared his throat, picking his fishing rod up off of next to him.
âYou, uh, ready?â He smiled, holding the rod up.
âDo you mind if I tell you a story while you fish for a bit? I thought itâd be nice. You fish and I read? Just for a bit. Promise.â Your suggestions sounded more like questions, unsure whether or not Kieran would like it. But Kieran was more than happy to have you read to him, he thought it was quite intimate. You had read to him before, and he loved watching the way you became so engrossed in whatever text you were reading. And he often found himself focusing more on you than what you were reading (yet he would always ask for a summary afterwards).
âOf course!â He felt embarrassed when he heard how enthusiastic he sounded. âUh, yeah, thatâd be great.â
He casted his rod out onto the lake as you pulled out a notebook. There was a moment of silence between you as you flipped through the pages.
âI went into Saint Denis the other day and I came across a nun, one thing led to another and I learned about who the cityâs named after. It was real interesting and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to tell you about it.â You explained. Kieran had to turn his head to hide his blush, disguising it as a cough. He was touched you had thought of him, specifically saving a story for this little outing of yours.
âPlease, go on.â He urged. You nodded and looked down at your notes.
âIt was said that Saint Denis was the patron of France, aaand, he was revered as the first bishop of Paris.â You began. Kieran hummed in acknowledgement, feeling instantly lulled by your voice.
âItâs not the most riveting stuffâŠâ You stopped suddenly, holding your journal to your chest. âAre you sure youâre okay listening to this?â You pouted. Kieran looked at you confused. Did he seem not interested? Was he not showing it enough?
âIâll listen to anything you tell me, (Name). You make anything interesting, swear.â He reassured. Your cheeks dusted pink a little, celebrating in your head over the sweet sentiment.
âOkay.â You giggled, making Kieranâs heart jump.
You continued. âAnyways, apparently Saint Denis was martyred-â
âMartyred?!â He cut you off in surprise. âLike, killed?â
You laughed loudly, amused by his surprise. âYeah, killed, killed for adhering to a certain set of beliefs, he was Christian.â You looked down your notes before continuing, tracing down the list of facts you wrote. âSaint Denis was heavily persecuted because he and his companions were so good at converting people to Christianity, that the Pagan priests were shocked by their loss of followers.â
âHe was martyred on Montmartre, quite literally meaning martyr mountain. More specifically, he was beheaded. And it was said that his decapitated corpse picked his head up and walked several miles, all while preaching a sermon, to an area northeast of Paris, where the Benedictine abbey of Saint Denis was founded!â You explained.
Kieran shuddered. âKinda morbid, especially for a peaceful morning on the lake.â He chuckled. âBut real interesting. I wouldâve never learned this if not for you.â
âYeah, I agree.â You shrugged your shoulders and set the leatherback of your journal on your lap. âSaint Denis is bustling with people and industrialization, kinda scary. Makes me want to go back west, yâknow.â
Kieran nodded as you spoke. âI ainât really allowed to leave camp, but I just know itâs nothing but bad business out in Saint Denis.â You looked off in the general direction of the city. The air became awkward again as the both of you ran out of things to say. You sucked in a breath, feeling too stiff to grab your journal and flip through the pages to find a story. You fiddled with your thumbs, attempting to occupy yourself by looking at Kieranâs fishing.
âSo, um, how have you felt since youâve fallen in with usâŠ?â You asked in an attempt to make conversation.
âI think itâs the best decision Iâve ever made.â He answered truthfully, and you found his sincerity touching. âFeels like a real family, like Iâm not at the bottom of the ladder.â
âThatâs really sweet Kieran, Iâm glad you feel so at home here.â You smiled. âEven with everyone hounding you sometimes⊠I like how you see the positive side in things.â
âSome teasing definitely beats the way I was being treated by the OâDriscolls. I can put up with it. And, Iâve made some good friends here too.â He could not hide the blush that crept onto his face, nor could he look away, mortified that he had said something, indirect as it was, referencing your friendship.
âHm, yeah.â You shifted in your seat a little, biting your lip to suppress your school girl giggles. Your foot tapped his as you moved, and you would not move it thereafter.
âIâve got some real good friends here too. Some of âem are real special.â
There were moments that you and Kieran shared that demanded to be fulfilled. Perhaps by a confession of love, or giving yourself to him, completely and in every aspect.
But these tender moments that you shared spoke every word for you, all you two needed was to listen to each other more closely. To speak your feelings directly was not necessary. All you had to do was put your ears to each other's chests, and listen.
time travel rdr2 fic but its uncle
uncle dies at beecher's hope holding jack's hand (really r*? really you didn't give my boy a CHANCE) and wakes up in a bar in 1894, shocked how good he feels?? younger and stronger despite the already familiar twitch of lumbago in his spine, not nearly as intense as it was in his later years. no scars from the skinner brothers. ready to take on the world!!
across the bar he sees a young abigail roberts, prostitute, flirting with a john (not John, just a john, which in an irony uncle had never noticed before). he starts laughing, hard, because it's 1894 and he's alive and the sheer joy of it being 1894. of course, the day his life changed - the day he met abigail, and introduced her to john, which would lead to jack's birth and just over a dozen years his forever home of beecher's hope.
he just. really wants to get back to beecher's hope
introduces abigail to the van der lindes, few years later jack comes along. despite uncle's best efforts, john still runs off, but suppose you can't fix everything. the years move along as fast as ever, and other than escaping a few narrow calls by an extra inch or two, and making an effort not to ruin his back, uncle finds himself in 1899. that horrible, dreadful year.
and suddenly it dawns on uncle he doesn't know how it happened. he wasn't exactly paying attention expecting he'd get the chance to fix it. he wasn't exactly sober for most of 1899, either. blackwater was the job that went wrong, but if hosea's opinion wasn't enough to stop dutch trying of course his isn't. arthur got sick, right? when? how? dutch lost his mind somewhere along the way - was it before, or after hosea died? fuck, that kid sean gets shot. uncle can't even remember when, or why, because it felt like one day he was there and the next no one ever fucking mentioned him again.
that doesn't mean he gives up. he didn't spend years fighting to keep his lumbago to a tolerable level for nothing! he goes out on jobs, hoping something will jog his memory. runs into charles smith a few months earlier, there's a bonus! forgot what a dullard he was in the early days. if anything, charles seems more eager to avoid him after the old man made the mistake of being too buddy-buddy
but everything just... happens. he didn't realise the first time round how sick little jack got in colter: not wanting to leave the kid's bedside, he forgot to warn john about the wolves. or the gang about the o'driscolls. but there's that nervy feller kieran again! good to see him in one piece. sneaks him a few crumbs this time around.
horseshoe bend never lasted long, before he knows it they're at clemen's point. didn't matter how many times ol' uncle said there was no gold, who's gonna listen to him? maybe a drink or two for his nerves: trying to keep an eye on sean is like watching lightning. too busy watching sean and trying to warn him about whatever it was that happened to realise it was the day jack gets taken, and then too busy trying to console abigail with the very firm and knowing assurance he's going to be okay to see sean ride back into camp dead draped over brown jack's rump.
shady belle: forgot how much he hates swamps. gators taste terrible. but they get jack back! just like he said, of course. little tyke ran back to his ma like he'd only gone to pick flowers. everyone's happy, and they celebrate and drink until they don't know night from blindness - but hey where did that kieran kid go?
oh. there.
nevermind - he was a sweet kid but uncle's gotta get his head on straight. bronte. saint denis. hosea, and young leonard too. christ, for laying low they do so many jobs in saint denis. uncle volunteers a handful of times: ends up grateful he can swim on what he swears is the last ferry job, shoots dutch dirty looks in the bayou with arthur trying to get a boat to bronte's. throws his hand up for one last score - would've last time if he wasn't too drunk. sees one of his oldest friends' killed, shot in the street like a dog in front of them.
h-huh. that's new. starting to understand how dutch lost it. also has to drag arthur to get him away from lenny, too, as the poor young man dies. it's a damned shame.
swears he'll never get on a boat again after ending up in guarma. all that perspiration - terrible for lumbago. thinks maybe he messed up and arthur's dead before the kid drags himself up to their meek campfire. he's maybe half-drowned but nothing a little food, water, and shade can't fix.
until he hears that cough, and duly notes whatever sick arthur was, it was something that happened before guarma. they get stuck with some freedom fighters but get home, and home is as - as broken as it was in the first 1899. poor jack didn't even have his favorite uncle uncle to play with this time around while abigail mourned for a not-dead-yet john. they'll get him back tho.
they go from lakay to beaver hollow, and uncle remembers he left. he didn't see how it played out. he saw pearson, and mary-beth, packing their things. he drinks with karen, like the first time around. finds molly in a bar - sends her to a place for down-and-out women instead of taking her back to dutch. hopefully she'll get a chance to be happy this time around.
when the pinkertons come he tells tilly to escape, he'll keep jack safe after abigail gets taken. he didn't know that happened, not something she talked about. not long though, because good old arthur is there to rescue her and brings her straight back to her boy.
he gets to say goodbye to arthur this time: a sincere, proper goodbye that arthur goes to laugh off before he starts hacking again.
for a few hours it's just them: sadie, abigail, jack and uncle, and he wonders if he changed something that meant john wasn't going to be- oh there he is.
john's quiet. they're all real quiet. no arthur. they ride off towards - don't think anyone's sure where. sadie leaves them at all trees. uncle stays. he can get a few extra years with them. sees jack grow up. sees john fuck up. he gets to be an extra voice in his ear earlier in 1907 than last time, reminding him what a moron he is for ever letting her go. but his ears burn and his chest goes tight at the mention of beecher's hope - finally, they're going home.
by 1911, it's a lot the same. he tries harder to protect abigail and jack from the bureau: gets shot in the side for it, but lives long enough to see them come home. john goes quiet again the day he has to pull out the old locker of guns, but this time uncle's serious about protecting the homestead while he's gone. john might have to live with killing javier, bill and dutch, but there's a few more chickens he saved from coyotes when he gets back. everyone's home. everyone's happy, in the strange way where they never seem to act happy but he knows they are.
sees the bureau in the distance one day, but this time he knows for sure what day it is. when they're only blurs in suits coming around the sizes of the property, he tells john to run: tries to shove him inside. instead, takes a few more bullets than last time. no jack holding his hand, just john's ugly mug as upset as he is angry as the world fades to black much faster.
wakes up in a bar in 1894. sees abigail flirting with a john. he sighs, and decides he'll start drinking earlier this time.
summary: Closed-off and rough; mean and unforgiving, uncaring and simply horrible. The apathetic cowboy draws himself no attention, usually. He's always sat around camp, slumped over a table or bent down, elbows on his knees as he cleans his guns or sharpens his knife, carving the one same piece of wood for days. He didn't talk much; he felt himself way too high above the others to even converseâexception being Dutch.
That's who Micah Bell was, simply. She couldn't change it.
Micah Bell is a threat to anyone that crosses his path, and Melody knows it. So why has she gotten herself so involved with the outlaw? She tried to keep to herself countless of times; he hated her, she wasn't a pure American and that alone should have been enough to draw her awayâand yet it simply never did.
Maybe it was just a rebound, wanting to feel something after feeling nothing from her horrible, previous partnerâsimilar in many ways to the blonde cowboyâfor years. Maybe it was his careless and cocky demeanor she never failed to give a chuckle to. And maybe, it was something more. She was going to figure it out, one way or another. They would; together.
a/n: ive had this cooking for months and this is the first of it im posting so im VERY nervous... :( it was going to be a long oneshot at first BUT im forcing myself to do it in chapters so that i have to continue writing it because ive neglected it for months now. also tags are going to change a lot probably
The wind picked up quicker than before as Melody rode along Colm through the storm. She could feel her body shivering no matter how many layers of coats and undershirts she put on before riding out. She gently brushed her horse's nose, trying to comfort her through the storm. "You reckon we're gonna find it soon? Joey said it's nearby.." She spoke up, looking to the man to her left.
"Surely. Hold on a bit longer." He replied coldly, riding his horse through the piles of snow effortlessly. She picked up her pace too, riding alongside his steed. "We gotta push a bit more." He added, his gloved hand rested on his lap.
She continued riding until the blizzard started clearing off, and they had a better view of the landscape before themselves. That's when he and Melody both noticed it; an abandoned outpost, exactly what Joey found before parting with the gang to seek it out. "Is that it?" She asked, hand hovering over her forehead to get a better view and block out the snow falling from above. "It sure looks like it."
He halted his horse next to her. "Must be it, c'mon." He ordered, and she followed him down the mountain.
They hitched their horses outside, and she followed close behind Colm. With her hand on her holstered revolver, Melody snuck around behind Colm, checking rooms with caution. "Clear!" He yelled to the rest of the gang, who moved their carriages in and hitched their horses next to their own. "Good job spottin' this gem. I'm sure Joey will be here soon." He says to Melody, taking a cigarette out of his box and offering her one. She nods, taking the offered cigarette and popping it into her mouth.
He manages to light a match on the denim of his jeans, holding it up to the tip of his cigarette "I sure hope so. We ain't seen him a few days." Melody comments, letting him light her cigarette soon after his own. "We already been losin' too much folk." She adds.
"Don't you worry. I've got it under control; those were necessary sacrifices, child." He says, his words not as reassuring as she'd hoped. Still, she nods with a small smile at him and watches him return it.
She moved her few things into the cabin closest to Colm'sâby his command. Melody huffed as she finished setting everything, walking out to check everyone else's progress. She observed them with another cigarette hanging from her mouth. "You done unpackin', kid?" Colm came up behind her, hands rested on his hips as he watched everyone work alongside Melody. "How quick you are." He adds.
Melody just chuckled, blowing smoke into the cold air above. "Yes, I'm done. Do you need any help? Anything I could do for you?" She asks him, awkwardly fiddling with the cigarette between her fingers.
"Maybe." He replies, placing his hand on her shoulder as he continues watching. "Got a train 'round here that needs robbin'. Buncha snobby, rich nobodies." He explains. "We need dynamite. I got a plan on how to rob 'em."
"I'm sure I can find myself a general store nearby, I'll buy some." Melody replies, puffing a cloud of tobacco into the air.
He firmed his grip on her shoulder, his grip tight. "Attagirl." He whispered into her ear, and she just exhaled with a weak smile. "That's why you're my favourite." His breath brushed against her ear, and it made a chill travel along Melody's spine.
First night in her own cabin was weird, everything about itâfrom the cold temperature swearing to kill her of frostbite, to insomnia from fear they were occupying someone's outpost and would be shot in their sleepâjust felt off, and Melody found herself tossing in her restless state on the mildly uncomfortable bedroll.
So much has happened in the last few weeks; from having to move camp a dozen times, losing a few weaker members in the processâto Colm's weird obsession with a rival gang rising again after he swore they were done with it.
Melody got up and stretched her legs out, anxiously lighting her fourth cigarette today for any sense of warmth it'll offer. "Fuck this damned storm." She looked out of the window as the specks of snow danced around the air, covering more ground and raising the snow level, little by little.
She finished the cigarette in a few minuscule minutes, and climbed back under the thin covers, trying to get some shuteye before tomorrow.
"You sure you ain't wanna come, Melody? It'll do you good to go out'a bit." Colm straddled his horse, looking down at her before him as Melody stroked his horse's nose.
"I'm far too tired, Colm. Plus, I need to get started on some chores and.. fixing this place up a bit." She replied, looking around at the buried outpost grounds, covered with thick layers of snow.
He chuckled, a sense of lust in his eyes as he looked down. "That's my girl; always so hard workin' for old Colm." He praised. "Someone's gonna have to reward you nicely for your contributions." He chuckled slyly, making Melody scrunch up her nose briefly. "Well then, I'll leave you to it." He urged his horse forward with a swift kick in the ribs, leaving the camp grounds.
Melody sighed, turning to make a mental note of all that needs to be done around camp before starting her round of chores, running on one cup of warm coffee and two hours of rest. Just great.
Colm returned in a few hours, a crate of province and some dynamite on his horse's back. She walked over to him, grabbing the province to put it away. "Hey. You got the dynamite?" She questioned him.
He hitched his horse, taking the dynamite and walking close by Melody, towards his cabin. "Yeah.. Figured I'd get it off your hands since I knew you'd be workin' hard by the time I was back," He responded, chuckling. "and I see that I was right, my good girl's being very productive, ain't ya?" He opened his cabin door with his elbow, placing the dynamite in the corner.
Melody chuckled nervously; his words leaving a distaste in her mouth, per usual. "Well, thank you Colm." She replied simply.
"Anything for you, child." He walked up to her, placing a firm grasp on her shoulders again. "I saw someone all too familiar while ridin' to the store." He announces, releasing his hands and placing them behind his back.
"Do tell." She answered, sitting down on his desk, swaying her feet off the edge slowly as she hunched over and placed her forearms on her knees. He turned, a mischievous grin on his lips.
He paces around the room. "Little ole Hosea Matthews, saw him on my way there." He answers, and Melody is taken aback by his words; which Colm just chuckles at. "Yeah, I'm surprised he ain't seen me."
She cocks her head at him. "You reckon he ain't recognised you?" She asked. "All them years of conflict, you sure he ain't just ignored you in hopes of gettin' out in one piece?" She chuckled briefly.
He stops abruptly, laughing. "Oh, sweet child. You're quite funny." He walks over in her direction. "You could be right." He says, placing each hand on one side of her body, which stiffens at the contact; now trapped on the table. "You know, you're such a smart girl, I could lis-"
A not-so-distant gunshot goes off, scaring both people in the process. "The hell..?" Melody mutters, awkwardly slipping away from his entrapment to a window. "I reckon my theory was right.. except he also snitched." Colm walked up behind Melody, looking out of the window.
Outside stood a fraction of Dutch Van der Linde's gang; Arthur Morgan, Micah Bell, Hosea Matthews andâof courseâDutch himself.
"Ah, fuck." he cursed under his breath. "Okay, girl. You go cover me while I.. I need to move away from the area." He explains frantically.
"Yeah.. Yeah I can do that." Melody saysâalready used to this by nowâand, taking her revolver out of its holster swiftly, walks up to the door. She opens it slowly, leaving it ajar for Colm to slip out as she starts shooting back, catching the leader's glimpse.
His accuracy is almost perfect as he glazed both a strand of her hair just above her ear and immediately catches on to start shooting at the door she finds shelter behind. She takes a shot of her own, missing the first but taking his hat off just above his forehead as he ducks.
The shootout was brutal; only a few of Colm's members survived it, with some successfully hiding away from the area as they searched the outpost. Melody watched them take the train plans, along with their dynamite, and hurry off while boasting about it all, feeling victorious.
"How is it my fault, Colm? I did my best to protect you, I managed to shoot one in the arm, too!" Melody defended herself against Colm's usual outburst when things go wrong; where he blames every soul but himself, no matter if it's nobody's or everybody's fault.
He grunted angrily. "I don't care! They took the plans, and we have to move again!" He complains. Melody opens her mouth to protest, but is met with his hand high in the air before herâthreatening to strike; something she's all too used to. "Don't. I don't wanna see you talkin' back to me." He ordered firmly.
And yet she still attempts to speakâlike the fool she is. "Colm, I'm just trying to-"
And there it is. She's met with a hard, rough slap of the back of his hand, knocking her to the floor as Melody clenches her rosy red cheek, already teary-eyed. She opens her mouth to apologise, but decides against it as she notices that look in his eyes. He shakes his head in disapproval at her on the floor, choking up a silent sob. And so, she just gets up and walks out to pack her things.
Packing didn't take nearly as long as expected; calming herself did. She had everything in one crate, and was sitting on the bedroll in the cabin with a burning sensation on her left cheek, and a few slow tears trailing her cheekbones and falling into her lap. This was like routine, really; he'd get mad and take it out on her, leave her alone to sulk and then-
The door opens slowly, and Colm's body slowly steps insideâlike clockwork. "Hey.. don't be cryin' on me, my sweet Melody. You know.." He sits down on the bedroll next to her. "You know I do it out of love. You know I sometimes lose my temper, don'tcha?" He asked, interwinding his hand into Melody's, rubbing the back of her hand.
"Yes, Colm." She replies simply, looking down at the floor.
Another teardrop meets her lap and she quickly brushes her face with her sleeves.
"Look at me." He commands, placing a uncharacteristically gentle yet firm hand on Melody's chin. "I love you. You know I do." His voice is as firm as his touch, and she just silently nods. She can't help wondering if it's even close to true sometimes. You don't treat someone you love like this, she's well aware of that much. "Good. Good... And you love me too." It's less of a question, and more of a fact to him.
Melody chokes up a response to break the silence. "I do, Colm." She holds his hand just as firmly as he stands up. "Let me get your things, child." He takes the crate off of the nearby table. She just smiles downwards, walking beside him. And that's how the routine ends, every time.
"We'll drive the wagon, girl." He calls out as Melody start straddling her horse. She looks at him with protest, opening her mouth to talk. "Ah Ah.. C'mon, you're with me. Cassidy'll take good care of your horse." He taps the seat on the coach next to him-and she can't not-oblige, leaving the reins in Cassidy's hands reluctantly. "Attagirl." He watches Melody sit down next to him.
The ride to a new spot is painfully long, and Melody is shivering throughout the whole thing-despite having multiple layers of shirts and jackets and putting gloves on her hands this time. "Where're we goin'?" She asks him, breaking the tense silence among us.
"Off the mountain; there's a spot I scouted out." He replies, hands gripping the coaches reins firmly. "It'll be better for all of us to get out of the cold." He looks at her shivering quickly, snaking his hand around Melody's shoulder and pulling her closer to him.
She obliges and scoots closer, resting her head on his shoulder. "Thank the Lord, then." She snickers, and he exhales with a smirk. "I'll be more than glad to be off that damned mountain.
"Oh, I know; you're shaking like a leaf, girl." He chuckles. "It's a nicer spot too, you'll love it," He snuggles her body closer, pressing her up to his side. "all the best for my best girl." His gloved hand rubs her shoulder, gentleânot like Colm at all.
She soon feels herselfârestless from the night before along with the shootout and what followedâstart to drift off on his shoulder, and he lets Melody sleep for a little while. She hated how easily she could forgive him for doing what he does, but he might really just have a temper. He's trying. He's trying. That's all she knows, and it's just how he is. Right.
The stage stops at a nice, slightly open area with a few smaller huts and barriers around it. Colm nudges Melody awake slowly, rubbing rough circles on her shoulder. "We're here, girl." He whispers into her ear as she lifts her head off his shoulder and rubs her eyes awake. The warmth of the new location can be immediately recognized, nice and actually comfortable. "C'mon. You'll be in my cabin. With me." He reveals, jumping off the coach as she follows.
"I'll be in the same cabin as you?" Melody repeats his words, puzzled, as she takes her crate with a grunt before following him. He nods his head, stopping beforeâobviously the biggest cabinâtheir spot.
"Of course, child." He simply replies, taking the crate she held off of her hands and walking inside. "Ain't it great?" Melody silently nods to answer, almost reluctantly. "Go get the rest of the things from the coach and meet me here." Melody quickly turns on her heels and walks out back to the coach.
They both finish unpacking around the same time, and Melody patiently waits for him to finish whatever on the edge of a cot. "Okay, girl." He firmly taps his thighs and stands up, beckoning her to follow him outside. She obliges quickly, walking right behind him. He calls everyone in a circle, explaining a new score he's gotten information for. Melody can feel herself distracted and spacing out, knowing she won't be invited to the jobâper usual, Colm just doesn't trust her enough to let her go with him. As infuriating as it is, her hands are tied.
Maybe she'll get that luxury one day.
Kudos on AO3 always appreciated! I'm honestly so glad to have even just the first chapter of this fic out, as it's been collecting dust in my drafts until the one month deadlineâliterally the last possible day.
Merovingian dynasty saints
Saints and martyrs had an interesting part in the Early Middle Ages. Martyrs of Christianity during the Roman age turned into saints because of their devotion to spread Christianity, which was still figuring itself out (Catholicism, Orthodoxy and Arianism).
A new wave of martyrs came during the christianization (of preferably Catholicism) in the Germanic age. Religious conversion was a process of great effort, because a lot of people had difficulties transitioning from an animistic-polytheistic to a monotheistic religion. Violence was sometimes the end result of this. Those martyrs instantly became saints, some even hoping and preparing for it during their lifetime, dying willingly.
It is also theorized that saints became of great importance in Catholicism to win over doubting Germans. To accompany the peopleâs needs to call on someone or something for specific requests or ailments was not really accounted for in Christianity, where God does acts of greatness but he was not considered (back then) to heal peopleâs tooth aches.
Saints/martyrs life stories (hagiographies) came out immediately after their deaths and they had done plenty of miracles during their lifetime, which some researchers correlate to fallen heroes going to Walhalla (receiving the greatest gift/honor of all).
Pagans needed something (new) to look out for after death. A goal to aspire to during their life, which happened to be turning into a Saint. During this time, a large number of churches dedicated to saints (that had dies just previously) came to be, all including and even trading relics of the saint.
CLEMENS FAMILY ; TIMELINE
this is technically the sort of post that should go on my multi because most of the clemens family are over there, but it's related to twain so you guys get to see it! this is my rough timeline of important events and affiliations in twain's pre-running away backstory and the current lives of him and his siblings.
content warning for religious cults, child abuse, and mentions of attempted suicide.
001. seven children are born to john and jane clemens over the span of roughly 10 years. in order, they're named orion, henry, benjamin, pleasant, pamela, samuel, and margaret.
002. over the course of their childhoods, each of the siblings manifests their own unique ability, though some of these abilities (such as pleasant's) remain mostly latent. john clemens, a local religious leader with a violent private life, quickly heralds his children as being "chosen by god" and uses them as proof that he is a divine messenger of god's will.
003. samuel neglects to manifest an ability before the age of five, leading his father and the steadily growing catholic-based cult to treat him as a pariah, reacting more harshly to his mistakes and subjecting him to various forms of abuse. john raises him to believe that he is a carrier of misfortune and a bad omen to whoever he comes into contact with.
004. the church of the blessed children slowly gains popularity in the american south, amassing members in the tens of thousands by the time samuel is 13. this is partly due to a latent ability of john's own that remains undiscovered to convince the people who hear his voice that he speaks the truth, effective on everyone but his own children.
005. on a particularly bad night, john attempts to drown samuel in the bathtub of their home while his oldest son orion watches in shock. after samuel goes unconscious, orion knocks john out and saves his brother, but doesn't stick around to claim the credit for his action.
006. two days later, samuel steals his father's shotgun and flees home. nobody searches for him.
007. a week after samuel's disappearance, john clemens puts his wife in a coma. in retaliation, his oldest daughter pleasant kills him with his own revolver.
008. the church of the blessed children kill pleasant clemens in retaliation for the death of their divine messenger. this event causes them to restructure their beliefs, and they quickly determine that the 'gifted' children were sent by the devil to lead them astray, while samuel was the only pure child. over time, he comes to be seen as a saint and a martyr.
009. the remaining five clemens siblings have a public clash with the local members of the church of the blessed children that results in the burning of the clemens family house and causes the siblings to scatter.
010. down the mississippi river, samuel encounters the being known as no. 44 after a successful suicide attempt. having changed his mind about dying, he makes a deal with 44 for the sake of survival and inherits an ability alongside this. he recieves the gift of his cat, whipped cream, whose life becomes tied to his.
011. on the same day, pleasant's latent ability activates fully for the first time, reviving her on the steep condition that her soul now exists outside of her body inside her father's revolver. she, too, flees from home.
012. samuel clemens begins calling himself "mark twain" after a mishap with his ability causes the permanent relocation from fiction to reality of huckleberry finn and tom sawyer.
013. the clemens siblings each end up in their own places. orion backpacks the country in search of twain. henry engages in over-the-top vigilante justice against members of the still-growing church of the blessed children. benjamin travels to las vegas where he joins a crime family. pleasant links up with a gang of homeless young adults in chicago. pamela joins an underground organization of ability users. twain joins the organization that rivals hers unknowingly. margaret travels to las vegas to use her ability to win money gambling.
I desperately want a RDR2 Undead Nightmare and since we wonât get it hereâs an idea on what it could have been
Set early into our arrival at Clemens Point (ch 3)
The story is a nightmare Arthur has after Jack tells him he read in a book that sometimes people with Typhoid fever were presumed dead, buried, and how a bell and string would be attached to their finger in case they werenât actually dead and how many people rung it, and came back from the âdeadâ; Arthur makes some comment about how he hopes the dead stay dead or smth and then goes to sleep
Arthur âwakesâ (dreaming) in the middle of the night to Dutch shaking him, saying something is going on, Hosea is standing nearby looking worried, Dutch goes and rouses everyone else and Hosea is about to explain but then the snarls of the undead ring out from the woods surrounding camp
Hosea and Arthur converse on what animals could be making that sound and conclude itâs no animal
the first undead person walks into camp and Dutch shoots it in the chest several times when it lunges at them; it falls but gets right back up, horrifying the gang; Arthur shoots it in the head and it stays dead; more come and a shootout begins; you and the gang defend Clemens Point from the horde, keenly aware that if you get overrun, the only where to run is into the river
a few gang members have been turned and are then hogtied and tied to trees (probably some of the more âuselessâ members)
once the horde has been defeated, Dutch decides the gang needs to figure out whatâs happening and tells Arthur to ride to Rhodes with him, and leaves Hosea, Bill, Charles, John, Javier and Sadie to guard the camp (also MAYBE Dutch letâs you pick a third person to ride to Rhodes with you)
they find the town is overrun with the undead and battle their way in. once the horde is defeated Arthur is sent across the counties to clear out the undead and attempt to find a cure and you can pick 2 companions to accompany you on your missions (and switch them out whenever you want; or maybe Javier and John help with Valentine, Sadie and Charles help with Annesburg, etc.) this is the bulk of the story, clearing towns, saving people, fighting hordes with your friends
Saint Denis is the last place that will become available once all the other places have been cleared and the whole gang will help; they have to kill the pinkertons including Ross and Milton who have turned which is obviously very cathartic for the player
Micah will get bitten in Saint Denis and Arthur gets to kill him :)
they find a cure either through magic or a cursed artifact or actual science idk but they return to the camp and save the members that got turned and Arthur wakes up and someone comments that he seemed to be having a bad dream and he agrees but then sees Micah walk past and says ânot all of it was badâ
that scene where milton and ross show up at clemens point and tell dutch they only want him but then kierans like âwhat if we give you colm odriscollâ and theyre like sure that works and they do that
this would most likely lead to the typical 'if the vdls were all alive who would actually be able to give up being an outlaw and settle down' dilemma
this did however make me kick my feet and giggle over the idea of the gang being forced to do a 180 because they actually realise kieran has a whole lot of power
in short: even if they had a deal with the pinkertons not being outlaws would be a condition and dutch is such a garbage power hungry vain person he wouldn't be able to help himself and end up jeopardizing the deal for everyone who WAS able to settle down. like rdr1 but with a proper 50:50 of the gang hunting down the other members of the gang who stayed with dutch in an effort to buy back the right to live free
but have you considered kieran having the sudden confidence to confront milton and ross because because he was actually an undercover agent with the og bureau: the classic fbi agent arrested by stupid cops
milton and dutch having their legendary stare down as the entire gang draw their weapons after dutch said he would go peacefully and kieran just finally groans and rolls his eyes because 'that was a pretty damned good deal but how about we give you colm o'driscoll and you let these 'murders and lowlifes' carry on their merry way if they promise not to - i don't know - rob anymore ferries??'
in the time it takes most of the bewildered gang to turn to kieran, who looks bored, and has holstered his weapon: ross is sweating a lot more than the lemoyne air should make anyone sweat and agent milton has goosebumps. 'what are you doing here' 'it's a long story. now how about we actually sit down and talk about this civilised'
kieran whistles to branwen, who calmly trots his way into camp almost going straight over micah bell. from the ratty saddle bags attached to a barely kept together saddle, kieran pulls out a badge, a very fanciful looking ID, and hundreds of photos of colm, the vdls, the braithwaites and fucking angelo bronte having tea with catherine braithwaite when the gang still just think that's a funny looking italian feller and haven't actually put a name to the face.
with only dutch, hosea, milton, ross and kieran duffy mediating, there is a back and forth of wit and snark and entire time kieran is there actually talking confidently, boredly, snarking at both 'respective' parties and making arguments about legal loopholes hosea didn't even know existed. then there's silence, milton shakes dutch's hand, and milton, ross and kieran ride off. and everyone is asking what the fuck just happened. hosea says they wait. yes jack's missing, yes they just burned down a manor, yes the pinkertons know where camp is but they stay and they wait until kieran tells them otherwise. the whole van der linde gang waiting for the word of kieran stableboy duffy
and three days later, kieran duffy rides back into camp with a very excited jack who can't wait to explain spaghetti and the dozen words of italian he learned to his parents with seemingly no idea how terrified they were. kieran kicks over a crate, gives himself a little box to stand on as he reads through dozens of pages of terms and conditions.
thanks to the unwitting work of the van der linde gang, the pinkertons and bureau were able to arrest colm, fat tommy, a half dozen other high ranking o'driscolls wanted for a collective thousand murders. they also were able to arrest angelo bronte and all his minions, severing a major international weapons dealing and money laundering operation. their reward? slate is wiped clean.
obviously, the gang are banned from ever setting foot in blackwater again. dutch is expected to be a polite and docile law abiding citizen the rest of his life. no more cons for hosea, arthur is also banned from going with 600ft of saint denis because no one should be able to accidentally trample 4 people and leave one man dead galloping through side streets. turns out that guy a wanted criminal anyway. otherwise? bounties forgiven. crimes washed away or otherwise explained as justifiable. javier esuella is an american citizen with his outstanding warrants in mexico not recognized by any us state. bill's dishonorable discharge was changed to 'other'. any members of the gang younger than 20 were given $150 to cover the tuition fee to a college of their choice and a letter of recommendation. everyone else was free to do as they wished, as long as they don't commit a crime big enough to come to either agencies' attention ever again.
well, except micah. the bureau still wanted micah, who arthur is only too happy to truss up like a thanksgiving turkey and deliver to the nearest police station
and if the gang chose to stick together (as strongly suspected they would) they were stuck with agent duffy, who was legally obligated to inform agencies if dutch started making stupid plans again (but if it was a good plan - which agent duffy may or may not have been allowed to advise on to help them not break their contract with the bureau - then what was the harm?).
the gang head west happy and free and definitely still committing much smaller scale robberies for the thrill. kieran discovers he prefers being called o'driscoll to rat king but at least he finally got his own bedroll
