arthur gets back to camp one unremarkable day to everyone in a flustered panic? charles is quick to explain it's kieran: charles found him being held by o'driscolls, he's beat up, he's hurt, and the medically inclined of the gang are currently trying to cut through the stitches on his mouth that were an obvious 'you talked, you're not talking anymore'

they get through it only for kieran to roll onto his side and start hacking clumps of blood. by the time the gang get an update kieran is passed out asleep despite maintaining a white-knuckle grip on mary-beth's wrist.

his tongue is gone, there was a cut in his throat from attempted decapitation, he's so thin and weak they're shocked he's still breathing. frankly, they advise he's probably going to die during the night

instead of dying, they're greeted to the terrifying visage of kieran bolting into shady belle in the dead of night, hyperventilating, his mouth a black hole in the dim light as he starts screaming. he woke up alone and it is very quickly not a mistake they will make again

without a tongue, and with some nerve damage to his mouth and throat, kieran can't communicate. especially at first. it's hoarse grunts and screaming. he can't make words, but the thing that distresses him most is that he can't whistle. whistling meant being able to call branwen, always having an escape and a means to run from danger.

anxiety becomes all-consuming. he can't handle being alone, because he can't call for help. he can scream, sure, but screaming didn't help when he was taken in the first place. for a long while, he needed to have someone in grabbing distance. his anxiety won't let him groom horses, because he's terrified of someone coming up behind him.

lenny teaches him, and the few gang members Kieran actually might talk to (namely Arthur, Mary-Beth, Karen and for funsies Sean's alive in this au) asl, which somehow leads to a new fear: kieran is terrified of the dark. dark means not being able to find people, and dark means people not being able to understand him

when the gang breaks down those four would become their own posse, with kieran stable boy and mary-beth becoming a sadie adler style 'don't fuck with my husband' protective of him. he loves listening to her read

one positive interaction between kieran and hosea in canon would've cured me. just one. i mean i'd settle for an interaction but a positive interaction?? imagine hosea talking to kieran at the scouts' fire in clemen's point, just small talk, a teasing comment saying he was surprised kieran hadn't run back to the o'driscolls and then asking kieran a little about himself, kieran absolutely failing to hold a conversation because it's been so long since an interaction with the gang didn't result in his balls and/or life being threatened, hosea asking if he fishes in desperation to get any conversation going and kieran lighting up a little. hosea saying he'll get kieran a fishing pole since he doesn't have one yet. just seeing kieran slowly become accepted by the gang.

If i remember correctly, the gang finds kieran whole hes out hunting for food, so you could assume that hes good at it, good enough to feed a whole camp of odriscolls.

I think it would be really funny if arthur, kieran and charles go hunting and kieran comes back wearing a full fur coat and chaps lol

Anything that gave us more canon Kieran content but also it would be hilarious.

Charles is trying to explain tracking while a herd of deer are grazing nearby. Arthur admittedly is listening because he needs a refresher but Kieran is showing to be a very dutiful student

Until he suddenly grabs the rifle he's borrowing from Arthur off his back and fires towards the deer, missing by a few inches and spooking the lot off.

As Arthur starts to mock him 'oh great we got the dud O'Driscoll that can't hit a goddamned deer standing still 30 yards ahead of him', Charles taps Arthur's shoulder.

A behemoth of a grizzly bear is sliding down the hill dead, a single shot perfectly between its eyes.

Kieran sighs in relief and very sincerely apologizes for interrupting Charles, asking him to go on with the lesson.

Turns out Kieran is insanely far-sighted, to the point where he can make out things moving at a distance most people can't. And words in a book are just black smudges to him.

Since the very firm agreement was they only get to keep what they kill (intended to cut Kieran out of any profit ), Kieran rides into camp with a new saddle, coat, pants and boots all curtesy of the trapper and more meat than they can keep without it spoiling.

Hosea is almost moved to tears by the bear meat stew just like his mama used to make it (burned to hell and back).

Everyone eats good and Kieran, who still has no intention of leaving camp alone, gives the surplus away to the boys who regularly work jobs, earning himself a slither of respect.

Arthur, petty drama queen, insists on cooking the rabbit he shot at the scout fire, occasionally spitting out buckshot.

The gang are all aware Arthur is like this and are letting him eat alone - because he would swallow the buckshot out of pride if someone was there to witness it.

ok im playing blessed are the peacemakers. and they leave camp. and walk past kieran. the odriscoll. the guy they literally tortured for weeks. to get information about the odriscolls. why would they not consult the guy who knows more about the odriscolls. than anyone else in the whole gang. where is the logic dutch. where is it.

i think it's because only the player, a very dedicated player, can see all the situations where kieran proves he's not an o'driscoll. telling sean about his past, how traumatic his life has been even before the o'driscolls. the fear in kieran's voice when he tells sean (again, shoutout to sean for being the only guy who gave my boy a chance) about colm 'turn[ing] his men into monsters... he scares me'. going fishing with arthur, talking more about his parents only to be ridiculed, but then how desperate he is to be trusted or even accepted. the fact he's still terrified to leave camp not because of the suspicion of the vdls, but because he's scared of o'driscolls.

now it's obvious why the gang don't trust him, the rivalry with the o'driscolls has gone on for decades, resulted in the deaths of loved* ones. saving one life doesn't prove he isn't an o'driscoll. arthur was raised by dutch, and it showed in that he tried to keep being suspisious of kieran. one of the reasons why john was dutch's predecessor instead of arthur is because arthur began judging kieran less harshly after kieran saved his life - meanwhile john was still berating them ever 'trusting' kieran during the o'driscoll attack at shady belle. once an o'driscoll, always an o'driscoll.

dutch was never going to trust kieran. he wanted him buried close but not too close. kieran was always going to be just another corpse to dutch even before he became one. he was a number in the gang's roster, a mouth to feed, an o'driscoll in his camp. hell, kieran could've jumped in front of the horses and screamed it was a trap, he knew it was a trap, he'd heard colm talk about it and was a ploy to get arthur, and dutch still would've ridden into the parlay with micah and arthur in tow. the logic - specifically dutch's logic - was sound.

*i think dutch is incapable of love, and never cared about annabelle

today i destroyed it so i could finish my house
