Columbo S1E1: "Murder by the Book" (1971)
Fern spotted at 49:05! I think. It looks like a tree fern, but might be a small sago palm.

KK, I collected the sago palm seeds in March, and they're germinating now in September. Got excited for a few minutes thinking they were the butia seeds, lol. nope. just the sago.
so yeah if you want one of these fancy "I have lots of money be jealous" (apparently they're super expensive?) palms:
Source for the first photo, since none of my pictures are this photogenic lol "https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/149748134"
Tumblr media
[ID: A photo of a sago palm in a large stone pot on a paved patio. The palm had deep green, feather shaped fronds with densly packed, thick needles on mostly straight, slightly yellow stems. End ID.]
(The rest of the photos are mine, and are public domain. You are explicitly encouraged to download and share them, I only ask that you include image descriptions when sharing online. You are also explicitly encouraged to copy and paste the image descriptions I wrote for them! :)
Anyways, to grow your own, go out in March and look for the seeds which should be falling off the trunk. They might still have a thin, dark brown papery husk on them, but when they're naked they're pretty big, tan, and smooth.
Tumblr media
[ID: A photo of a sago palm seed with the husk removed, sitting on a sidewalk in front of the toe of a pink shoe. The seed is solid, round with small points on either end, and tan with a completely smooth surface. Behind it is a fallen flower from an American sweetgum tree, and a dried piece of bark. End ID.]
Here's a bunch of seeds on the ground below the palm. First normal photo, then with the seeds circled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two versions of the same photograph, showing over a dozen sago palm seeds lying on the ground below the parent tree. The ground is covered in dried brown leaves and pine needles, with some younger sago palm leaves poking through in deep green fronds. Most of the seeds are naked, with tan coverings like nuts, but a few are still in the dark brown, papery husk. The second photo is the same as the first, except that each seed is now marked with a yellow circle to make them easier to see End ID.]
now that I know they're so easy to grow, next year I'll make sure to make a video showing the seeds if I didn't do that already...I'll have to check the youtube channel...
Anyways, I had the seeds I collected in a plastic shoebox with holes in the bottom for a plant pot, which is just a great seed starting container for the record.
The seeds were buried halfway, and then since it got hidden behind a bunch of other plants, they only got watered when it rained.
They were also in there with a bunch of pecans that seemed to be dead. When I collected the sago seeds, they seemed to be pretty light weight, and I'd never bothered looking up their reproduction, so I wasn't sure if they were alive or not.
So this container was pretty much "stuff that may or may not grow".
And what do you know? It seems like almost every single sago seed has sprouted!
They start out with single shoots, looking like grass - (This is why palms are called monocots -- they only have one leaf when they first sprout!) - but thicker and rounder. A few of them have formed cute little fronds already!

I just bought this gift for myself, a beautiful young sago cycad (Cycas revoluta) and I’m so excited! I’ve been wanting one for a long time now and this one happened to catch my eye at the garden center near me, they’re rare and hard to come by locally.
For those who don’t know, they are among the most basal group of plants still living today, and originated almost 300 million years ago. They have a lifespan of 200+ years and can get 15” feet tall. It definitely gives me jurassic park vibes, and I’m happy to have it. I have named it Little Foot :’)

Not sure what's up with my Sago Palm, I'm hooooping he just needed a drench & he is gonna bounce back soon!! Otherwise, internet says maybe he needs magnesium? (He was also transplanted to that bigger pot recently, but he definitely needed something bigger so idk if it's stress or what)
If anyone on here has a thought, feel free to comment/inbox me! ꒰⑅ᵕ༚ᵕ꒱˖♡

The Sago Palm: Balancing Household Aesthetics with Pet Safety
Several common houseplants are toxic to pets, but arguably one of the most dangerous is the Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta). All parts of this plant are toxic, but the seeds or “nuts” contain the highest amount of toxin. The ingestion of just one or two seeds can result in severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, depression, seizures, and liver failure, and it can be lethal. Sago Palm (Cycas…

Columbo S10E8 “Butterfly in Shades of Grey” (1994)
Boston fern spotted at 1:00!
Tumblr media
This episode is notable for featuring a gay character (as the murder victim, unfortunately) and also for having William Shatner back on, this time to play a conservative radio host. He's basically the Alex Jones of his time.
Bonus plant: this sago palm.

💕Positivity prime time! Share five things you love about yourself, four things you're excited about, OR three people you care deeply about and why. Pass this along to someone whose posts make you smile💕
- It probably doesn't come through in English since it isn't my native language, but when it comes to speaking Finnish irl, I've been told I have a large vocabulary and I'm good at explaining things. I try to remember that whenever I'm feeling like an idiot.
- I have pretty good skin, I think. It's not too dry or oily and I don't get pimples often. I started using moisturizer regularly for the first time last winter and it's really nice how soft and smooth everything feels now.
- I'm reasonably good with houseplants. My personal favorite is my sago palm, but I also have accumulated lot of prayer plants and various euphorbias. I love cacti but never seem to be able to keep them alive for long, unfortunately.
- Apart from my face blindness and poor sense of direction, I have above average visual memory, or at least I strongly suspect that to be the case. It's fun. And useful.
- I've developed a liking for long, aimless walks and I think that's a positive thing. I've always been a homebody indoor person type of guy and I'm okay with that, but it's still good for you to get some fresh air and casual, no pressure exercise every once in a while. Soon it'll be winter again though and I'm not going to go outside for any longer than I have to when it's -20°C for weeks on end, but right now I'm enjoying wandering around more than I thought I would.
