Brussels & Amsterdam!

Hello again, we are going to jump right into it! The next week was fairly normal, I went to school and recovered from the week prior. However, the weekend was not typical. My roommate Stella and I and our two friends from our new school took a (self-made) long weekend trip to Brussels, Belgium and Amsterdam, Netherlands! 

My friends, Alex and Rachel, from Maryland, and I left for Brussels on Thursday afternoon. It was all of our first trip outside of Spain. Although the airport was confusing, our flight was fine and we landed in Brussels around 8pm. We then took a taxi to our tiny (I mean TINY) Airbnb that consisted of a bed that almost touched all four walls, and a very small bathroom. We wanted to explore the area we were staying in, but it was dark and everything was closing early because Brussels was still partially locked down due to Covid. We ended up at a well-reviewed Lebanese restaurant close to the Airbnb. We were the only ones in the restaurant. The staff was very nice and helpful, but they didn’t speak any english, and we did not speak any french, which lead us ordering by pointing at the photos of the food from the menu. The server, whom we assumed was also the owner, instead brought us out the most popular dishes which were amazing!!! I had never had authentic Lebanese food before, but I feel in love. After our delicious meal, we headed back to the Airbnb and sleep 3 people across the length of the bed. Not the best nights-sleep I’ve ever had but it sure was cozy! 

The next day consisted of a lot of sightseeing. We walked to the Grand Place, got authentic Belgian waffles (put Taste of Belgium to shame), saw Manneken Pis, went inside of the Eglise Notre Dame du Sabion (The Church of Our Blessed Lady of the Sablon), hung around the Poelaertplien area, and finally made it to the Royal Palace. All of the sites were breathtaking, especially the quaint little streets! However, it took us up until the Royal Palace when we were drenched in rain to realize we were stuck in storm Eunice... We took shelter in a cute little coffee shop close to the Palace. 

That evening, we went to an awesome market for dinner before going to a bar crawl. We had signed up for it before we came to see more of the city and meet new people. That experience was very fun, we went to four bars and met some great people! Lots of them were from the U.S. but we did befriend some lovely ladies from Ireland. My roommate Stella met us that evening (she came late to go to her Friday classes), and the two of us stayed in our first hostel! It was very nice and did seem much like a hotel, besides the other four girls staying in our room that we did not know. 

The next morning, we had our chocolate making class! That was so much fun, but by the end we all had terrible stomach aches from sneaking chocolate during the class. The instructor, whom we quickly befriended, was just a bit older than us, and was very knowledgable about all things chocolate and the history of Brussels. Again, there were a lot of people in the class from the U.S., and even two girls who went to Clemson (BOO)! Anyways ... the chocolate was so yummy and made us very sleepy for our train ride to Amsterdam (don’t get me wrong, we were riding high from the sugar for a while).
