lbr this isn't about rights. i don't think either of these countries is lgbt+ friendly by a long shot. Even in India, you have to be in a metropolitan city to have any gay scene, marriage legalization is decades away. That is not what I'm talking about.
What I am curious about is how even under censorship 'queer coded' media is made in China when it is a much stricter, harsher, authoritarian country. While India, the land of unity in diversity doesn't have the same. I'm NOT talking about they-kiss-on-the-lips gay. I'm talking, i guess, essentially what destial did or how Shen Wei waits 10,000 years for Yun lan or ZZS and WKX calling each other soulmates. We don't have those type of things where people can speculate. Not that it's any help but it's about starting a conversation. It's about bringing attention to this. Think how in Kal Ho Na Ho you have Kantaben but it's made by a gay man, he knows what he is doing. And Kantaben's comedy is put in a negative albeit comedic light. (Also one of the song about love 'Kuch to hua hai' has a gay couple kissing. It's only a few seconds, blink and miss it type, but for a movie in India, in 2000's, putting queer love in the same song as the main leads.... )
And it's not like there is 0 queer content ever. But the one that is made, even those that are made with good intentions, somehow aren't quite right, like there is something abstract missing. idk where you are from. If you are Indian, you would know what I'm talking about. Shubh mangal zyada savdha, starring Ayushuman Khurana, came out in 2019, had a gay couple, the story was convincing family members that it's okay that they are gay. But personally, it felt really off. The only thing I can say about why is coz they were straight actors playing a gay role without adding queerness to the acting itself. I'm not talking limp wrist-ing. Something about it, as a queer person, felt inauthentic.
Compare that to Maja Ma, starring Madhuri Dixit, came out 2022, that felt queer. Honestly queer. And Badhai Do had queer characters but it wasn't really honestly queer. And this one I have a hard time explaining, coz I love the movie, it had some amazing scenes that I can't ever complain about, but as a whole, idk...
A lot of the times, there would be queer char to grand stand / represent / gain woke points while the end product misses the mark by just a little. But that could be a personal opinion.
But that's now, pre-censorship, China had BLs. Like BL BLs. China is trying so fucking hard to avoid all of this and pretend that queer people just don't fucking exist. But even they have to give in. Think IQiyi hosting so many queer shows and they haven't left the top 10 list, hell Kinnporsche alone hasn't left top 10. On a platform that is also used by people in Mainland China, the population alone should tell you how many people are watching these shows outside the country since they aren't visible inside it. China understands that pink milk is making money and they are happy to be hypocrites and cash in on it whether through Thai BLs or their own censored bromance BLs. But India isn't. India never has. Is this just a lack of business acummen or lack of future planning in the country?
Just capitalistically, why hasn't India cashed in on this?
Also, I truly believe the second queer media / BLs start making money is the second the rules start to get laxer and laxer until we get marriage equality. Money moves the world, you like it or not. No organization/institution/country is controlled by politics and righteousness alone.
Getting into BL in 2022 makes me think - why not India? Like China is making BLs. CHINA! And before 2016 they were not censored. Yes they were not HEAs and were problematic but they were there. And that is what irks me, I guess. I keep thinking does the audience just not want queer stories, even like the Oscar bait kind. You google this and there is a list of the same 10 books/movies and half of them are non-fiction. So do people just not want it? But that can't be, given how popular BLs are. (Percentage wise it's low but in a population of 1 billion+, even 1% is a million people) Is someone blocking the making of this type of content? Coz like I said, the sheer size of the country's population would justify spending money on this. We've seen some in the last year but even those aren't love stories, they are sad coming out stories.
My gripe with this remains the fact that China made BL and even post censorship they made BLs. Guardian, The Untamed, WoH, etc. While I don't think they will continue making more, these were, like I said, POST censorship BLs. India doesn't have even remotely similar content. And the reason I compare these two countries is there are other variables that are similar. Like India vs USA would not be a fair fight. USA has a different culture. But Asian cultures are overall similar and China also has the same population and they were destitute after the British too. So unlike say, Thailand, which wasn't majorly affected by colonialism, well not as much as the others, India and China have a similar starting point.

Phulera Village: Is It Real?
Tumblr media
The maiden season of Amazon Prime Video’s Panchayat was released about a week after the 2020 Covid lockdown gifting the house-arrest with an easy escape from the unprecedented turn of events. For many, what started as a mindless watch eventually topped the binge-watch lists of India.
The series has garnered immense praise for its heartwarming portrayal of Indian rural life, capturing the essence of small-town dynamics with humor and sensitivity. The first two seasons, which premiered in 2020 and 2022 respectively, resonated deeply with audiences, leaving them eagerly waiting for the next chapter.
Phulera village had been the epicenter of the entire plot. Where is this village located? Is Phulera for real? Finally, Madhya Pradesh Tourism have shared details that TVF and Amazon’s series was shot in a village named Mahodiya in Sehore District of Madhya Pradesh
Slight reveal of behind the scene of the shoot location seems to amp the excitement. While shooting, the crew used one of the schools in the village to have lunch and the entire production team of workers came from Bhopal.
The by lane children in the village greet you with amiable pride, one of the most hit web series was shot in their very own village. While few say candidly, ‘Pani ki kami hain.’
Mahodiya is a well-known treasure trove of natural beauty, wildlife, history, and heritage. However, owing to the popularity of Panchayat series, the village is a well-loved mass destination.
Jeetendra Kumar expressed that R.K.Narayan’s Malgudi Days had been a great source of inspiration for the show.
Panchayat 3 Release Date: What to Expect from Jeetendra Kumar?
Best known for his role in ‘The Kota Factory’ Jeetendra Kumar went on to carve a spectacular niche for himself with three seasons in his kitty.
While essaying the role as the secretary to the Village Panchayat, Jeetendra Kumar might have been slightly apprehensive with the audience pull but to the surprise of the team, Panchayat today has rural, urban as well as international viewers.
An IIT alumnus, Jeetendra always harbored love for acting. It was a chance meeting with Biswapati Sarkar, the creative director and writer at TVF, which landed him his first project, 'Munna Jazbati: The Q-tiya Intern' in 2013. It was followed by the super hit series 'Kota Factory', where he played a teacher at an engineering coaching center turning him to the digital superstar. And the entire season of Panchayat only reinforced the genuineness of the title. Over the last four years, he has also forayed into films, the most mainstream one being 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan,’ 'Chaman Bahar' and 'Dry Day' (2023) was released.
Whether the hindi cinema veteran, Neena Gupta or Jeetendra Kumar whose popularity rocketed with Panchayat expressed that they shot in the unbearable heat when even the locals would stay indoors.

7 Comfort Movies
@hughungrybear ilysm tagging me in this
I'm not really on the movies side of media but I'll let y'all know that once upon a time when I was straight i was a movie freak okay so without further bs
(okay so I realised the movies I've watched are all in hindi💀 because I was a movie freak before covid and after that I started other language stuffs 💀 so)
1. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan
Ayushmann Khurrana as Kartik Singh and Jeetu as Aman Tripathi
Tumblr media
this was the first queer movie I've ever watched. and this is also India's first mainstream gay movie. and the amount of comfort I got from this is unparalleled.
2. Taare Zameen Par
Darsheel Safary as Ishaan Awasthi, Aamir Khan as Ram Shankar Nikumbh (this man here is a genius. his stories are so good and has such nice social messages-)
Tumblr media
a little dyslexic boy is misunderstood by his family (as usual🙄) and is sent in a hostel BUT AN TEMPORARY ART TEACHER THERE UNDERSTANDS HIM
I can't watch this movie much because this makes me so sad and-
3. 3 idiots (jshdjddj I swear I didn't plan it on writing it at 3 it just happened)
R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Aamir Khan as Rancho and Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi
Tumblr media
I've lost count how many times I've watched this movie it's just so good. just the right amount of comedy and seriousness and it's about the pressure in the education system in a college setting
4. Chhichhore
too many actors so.. just a little tribute to the one who died trying. Sushant Singh Rajput as Aniruddh Pathak
Tumblr media
this again talks about the pressure of education system, and depression and suicide, and hope. one thing I would like to roughly quote is, "Everyone has a plan after achieving success but if you by chance fail then how you need to deal with failure, no one talks about that."
5. PK
Aamir Khan as PK, Anushka Sharma Jaggu AND Sushant Singh Rajput as Sarfaraz Usuf
Tumblr media
(y'all must be thinking (I mean if you even read upto this that is) not aamir khan again. and yep valid jrgdjrhd but I love his movies)
again a movie idk how many times I've watched. but this is about religion. (and an alien on earth)
.......so yea that's all I could think of :)
tagging all my mutuals pls do this

andhadhun (his acting in this is actually insane prob his highest rated movie) ‘blind’ guy accidentally stumbles upon a murder lol
bala (basically he’s bald and he fears he won’t get his dream girl super funny but also touches on the perception ppl treat male baldness w!)
shubh mangal saavdhan (a couple falls in love and gets married, but the groom discovers that he suffers from erectile dysfunction) + shubh mangal zyada (more) saavdhan (basically being gay in an indian household and it’s difficulties) (same cast as badhai ho!)

India as a country is not only homophobic, but the very term 'gay' is taboo here. Despite this Ayushmann Khurrana not only starred in a LGBTQ+ film, he actually was the main gay.
This film has a 92% approval rating.
Honestly I was reduced to tears when I first saw it.
Like it may not be a big thing to many people but to a queer Indian its hope.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020)
Tumblr media
Director: Hitesh Kewalya
Stars: Ayushmann Khurrana, Jitendra Kumar, Gajraj Rao...
Presenting the life of two gay men who are in love, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan depicts their struggle to convince their families to accept the relationship. But things are never as easy as they seem and one of the boy`s family decides to get him married to a girl. Will their `unconventional` love prevail?
I really liked the movie visually speaking - it was fun, very colorful and dynamic. It seems like it strove for a comedic approach, but I have to admit it wasn’t really funny to me most of the time. In fact, at times it got serious and the amount of hardships the characters had to go through were sometimes uneasy to watch. I expected it to be lighter than it actually was, but I definitely liked the happy ending.
Rating: 3/5

can't believe Bollywood gathered enough guts to finally acknowledge the presence of sexualities other than straight
Oh my god.I love this.
Thank you for showing two men kissing
Last thing i expected bollywood to do.
When all i expected of bollywood was to keep falling it rose from the ashes

this is just me solely trying to get all you north indians to watch & support some south indian lgbt (short) films for once--namely a tamil one. recently i was on the prowl for indian lgbt media and i found this short film called magizhvan (translates to gay) on youtube.
it’s a tamil film with english subtitles (that’s also interfaith--one of the boys being hindu and the other being muslim) about two men who decide to come out to one set of parents and their reactions to it and how they come to accept them in the end. it’s pretty good, runs about an hour long, and as a tamil person, it hit super close to home. it’d be cool if y’all could take the time to check it out and support some south indian and specifically tamil endeavours in lgbt media!
here’s the link to the film on youtube!

Disclaimer : giving it in the beginning coz this post has nothing to do with SOME OF THE TAGS (tho I am quiet involved with these tags) I have given, so some might find it irrelevent. I just wanted to spread it as much as I can. But please go through it! You will not be dissapointed.
My country, India, has gone through a lot of changes since September 6, 2018, before and after. On this day, Homosexuality was discriminalised in my country and I being a supporter and a citizen I guess it was my duty to post this.
Though it does not mean, my country was forever homophobic and suddenly all became liberal on and after 6th sept. No! Many citizens both famous or non famous has come out in open support of homosexuality! And what reached the public more is the media and movie-cinema-theatre! And I am so proud of it.
But somewhere in these movies the concept of 'Homosexuality portrayal' was just shown as slapstick-comedy in plots as extensive measure! Either thrown into the plot for a comedy relief with jokes or completely degrade them
But on the opposite side there are lot of other movies in various languages that have won national awards, forced us to cry buckets with tragic ending and goosebumps over powerful morals of the plots. Highly applauded👏
Still for me, I had always waited for movies with a homosexual couples getting their own happy ending. I understood it was not possible before 2018 as law forbade it and a movie is a mere reflection of the society. But after 2018, I defintely waited for it and then in 2020, this year, it came to me in the form of this👇👇👇👇
Tumblr media
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan!
Can't tell whether it has got a HAPPY ENDING or not, but what I can say is IT'S DIFFERENT
The upper picture is a poster where two Indian Grooms are going to get married on a horse-back ride with the parents below who are confused as hell!🤭 By the way, did you notice the triangle-tattoo on the left neck side of the man in jeans. It a gay symbol supporting homosexuality. Don't miss it!
But why is this different?
Different because it has got comedy, but not a slaptick, a very serious topic to be dealt with in Indian society but not with those heavy tragic themes shown in other previous movies. Because in this movie it is based around HOMOPHOBIA, how IT is a "disease" and that homosexuality is absolutely normal. The movie has a comedic approach with an emotional approach, showing how same it is with straight couple, also portraying a same-sex couple with a absolute adorable 💯 chemistry
Let me show you part by part!
1) Meet Kartik and Aman, a regular couple, and with a height difference for which my brain, my heart, my kidney, my whole body melts (okay that was too much, but see it yourself)
Tumblr media
(And don't miss the heart eyes😍 Kartik gives when his other half is not looking #WhippedCulture)
2) Here Kartik is a very confident gay who wears pride flags as a superhero cape, well he IS a superhero for his Aman
Tumblr media
Now this scene is important! Can you see the pigeon in front of him (sorry for the low quality, its screenshot I won't hide). In our country Pigeons, Doves, these birds are the SYMBOL OF FREEDOM... So here Kartik wears a Pride Flag🏳️‍🌈 proudly, and there are pigeons! 🤔 Understandable, right?
3) And between the comedies we find scenes we find these two fighting and so very sad when the love of their life is ALMOST going to get away! Devastating😭!
Tumblr media
4) Now the directors also show here some great Indian Movies (that ruled over bollywood for decades) parallels! And the couples, gay or straight, are so similar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now now, before you start quaking on SHADOWHUNTERS, I know its NOT a bollywood movie and no where near bollywood concept. Its just my addition!
Don't we all love Malec and their epic first kiss? Alec stepping down the altar, "enough"-ing his mother and kissed Magnus in front of the whole wedding! *dreamy eyes*
Well that sort of happened here too! Just Aman boldly kissing Kartik in front of the whole wedding. How can you not but relate? 😅
5) And we get see some great Kartik-Aman chemistry that puts my chemistry syllabus to shame, half of the other bollywood couples to go back home. They made a whole lesson out of chemistry, physics, maths, literature and bio
Tumblr media
6) But for every subject there are exams and this case they are the PARENTS & FAMILY... Aman's family is hell bent to drive Kartik away but Kartik isn't ready to back down until He marries Aman....... But that doesn't mean he left out his family
Tumblr media
Here Kartik tells how much he and Aman relates to the parents and their ACCEPTANCE is everything. If they have won over their parents, they have won over the world too.... It is also a message to the parents that their support means everything to their children
7) BONUS : The fun in Indian weddings is like no other. Dance, music, colour, clothes, families and guest, food, rituals, function *phew* thats BIG. Its big and fat!!! But its double the fun when its a BIG-FAT-GAY-INDIAN wedding and with a KISS😘
Tumblr media
And I end it here with Thanking Kartik, played by Ayushmann Khurrana and Aman, played by Jitendra Kumar. Both are the powerful actors of the industry and TV sirieses who are so supprtive.. Ayushmann is the content king of bollywood, making movies on plots no one can even think of! And Jitendra, better know an "Jeetu-bhaiya" who rules the Indian TV siries.
Tumblr media
Mention worthy GAJRAJ RAO, NEENA GUPTA, MANU RISHI CHADDA, SUNITA RAJWAR, MANVI GAGROO🙏🙏
(sorry Tumblr only allows 10 pics, so I can't upload the cast group photo)
But here is the link to the movie trailer , the movie releases on 21 Feb, 2020... Audience response is amazing and quiet unbelievable.. with more than 48M views in trailers and 5M views on songs in just 24 hours
So international, national viewers check the tralier with eng subs (you will probably get eng sub under Hindi captions😅lol) and laugh and mush and get soft watching it👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
youtube
And btw what will be the couple's SHIP NAME? Suggest now😊
Till then, TREAT PEOPLE WITH KINDNESS 🏳️‍🌈 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️🌈💐
