As soon as their party had crossed the threshold of the city proper, they'd turned to a local rabblerouser for directions, inquiring about points of interest and general information about the city. He'd filled them in while still trying to hold court with the group of refugees and protesters crowded around him, adding in fiery criticisms of animancy and the local constabulary, and as soon as the opportunity to escape had presented itself the little band of adventurers had beelined for the nearest tavern, a busy little neighborhood eatery and inn called the Goose and Fox.
Bit strange, that name. Sounds kind of predatory for a house of respite. Sagani glanced down at her own fox, and then chuckled to herself, shaking her head. ...Alright, maybe I'm looking a little too hard into this.
She noticed Axa looking at her quizzically, so she leaned over and murmured: "Here, stop me if you've heard this one: An orlan, a dwarf, a folk, an elf, an aumaua, and an arctic fox walk into a bar..."
"The bartender looks at them and says, 'What is this, a joke?'" Axa quipped back, not missing a beat. It was a punchline from a different bit, catching Sagani off guard, and both women laughed loudly enough to draw attention. In particular, that of a sour-faced elf with a rag draped over his shoulder who frowned and pointed at Itumaak, shaking his finger as he scurried out from behind the bar.
"Hey, hey, c'mon now, ladies, no loose animals in the dining area– Is that a dog, or...? Either way, tie it up outside, please. This isn't the Salty Mast." He spat the last few words from his mouth like a foul-tasting venom and turned to resume his duties, only to find himself nose-to-chest with Edér.
"He's an arctic fox, actually," the large man drawled softly, his tone hovering between casual and threatening. "And he goes where we go. ...'Sides, he's clean, and he don't make no trouble. Not 'less there's trouble with us. Which there ain't. Right?" He smiled amicably, looming over the sweaty little man as Axa stepped forward to intercede and the rest of her crew discreetly slid into a corner table.
The two of them returned shortly, followed by a husky orlan barmaid loaded down with stew and brew for the party of five, plus a little something for Itumaak. They talked while they ate: planning, mostly, about what to do with the rest of the evening and the days to come. The Hall of Revealed Mysteries, temple to Wael and the largest library in the Dyrwood, was a high-priority destination, as was the Ducal Palace in First Fires, for the war records Edér was after. And, of course, eventually they'd have to head for the western gates to escort Sagani to the cliffs where she might meet Persoq.
Even though your initial offer wasn't an escort to the cliffs. Only to the city. Sagani smirked as she considered the implications and nursed her tankard. You that eager to prove you're really a Watcher? Or are you just hoping to keep me on as a hireling you don't have to pay? She watched them eat and talk and drink and laugh, and when the orlan caught her staring, she smiled and offered the huntress a toke from her pipe.
...Frost's sake, Sagani, she thought as she politely waved the proffered whiteleaf away, maybe she's just nice.
She was pleasantly buzzed and half-listening to Aloth and Kana argue about whether to visit the asylum in Brackenbury when she noticed that Axa's attention had drifted as well– to the folk woman at the table nearest the back wall, the one who kept her face out of the lamplight and stared grimly into her ale.
Sagani nudged Axa, indicated the woman with a nod of her head. "You know her?"
"No." The redhead rose from her seat, wiping her mouth and knitting her brow. "But I know that look." She spared a glance at the lads– Edér, his eyes shut, blissfully gnawing on a hunk of beef; Kana and Aloth still wrapped up in the discourse on animancers in the Dyrwood– before striding purposefully towards the solitary woman, Sagani close behind.
It took some coaxing, but they got her talking. She told them her name was Kaenra, and that her fiancé had recently struck up a close friendship with svef, had started bringing strange, unsavory people around to the house to use. That he'd become distant, and then violent, and that all she wanted from him now was for him to take his grandmother's ring back and fuck off out of her life. Sagani watched as Axa listened, watched as she bristled with righteous rage, her eyes lingering on the woman's fresh bruise as she squeezed the ring tightly in her fist.
"I'll make sure he gets it," she vowed.
And so it came to pass that Sagani found herself spending her first evening as a tourist in Defiance Bay firing off arrows in a stranger's kitchen and siccing Itumaak on the drug-addled thugs in the study. Judging from the reactions of the rest of her retinue, apparently this sort of thing wasn't exactly out of the ordinary for Axa: the girl had a thirst for justice, it seemed, and she damn well meant to slake it.
Before long, they were all standing above the cowering, bloodied homeowner, a man called Purnisc who struggled to explain himself to Axa's satisfaction. Turns out he had been dealing svef, too, and when his supplier had found out that he'd been pocketing more than his fair share of the profits–
"–they sent the kneebreakers downstairs," Sagani finished for him, "and the wizard to replace you. Literally." She shook her head in wonder. It really was just like one of her Vailian crime novels.
"Replacement wasn't much of an improvement on the original." The little redhead was steaming mad, and she made no move to hide it as she leaned over the battered man, finger in his face. "You silly bastard, you really thought you could steal from a professional criminal, and lie to your woman about it, and you're just so gods damned clever that no one could ever possibly be the wiser?"
The man's blacked, swollen eyes went as wide as they were able. "You... you've talked to my Kaenra? Is she alright? Sh-she doesn't know I was selling, does she? Oh, gods, please don't tell her. I'm so sorry for putting her through all this. Please don't–"
"Are you fucking kidding me?!" Axa's roar came shrill and piercing, her typical rich, smooth voice consumed in the fire of her outrage. "Kaenra sent us here to return your ring because of your lies, you crooked little shit-for-brains! She loves and respects you! And you'd have us lie to her again?"
The pathetic man had withered under the orlan's verbal assault, and Axa seemed to have made her mind up about him as the group marched solemnly back to the Goose and Fox. But after returning to Kaenra, after telling her what Purnisc had done, the little woman once again defied all reasonable expectations.
"He's just an idiot, not a monster," Axa assured the other woman, "and he still loves you. And although he did a damned foolish thing, he never meant to hurt you. You just need to decide for yourself whether he's worth a second chance." Her violet eyes shone with tears as she spoke, Purnisc's ring on the table next to the women's clasped hands.
And when Kaenra said she’d think about it, that was the first time Sagani had really started to believe in the Watcher of Caed Nua.

Watcher Claria
The Lady of Caed Nua wasn’t always a Watcher, a lady with dignity and poise, one of the most talented ciphers ever seen, and a skilled marksman to boot. Once upon a time, the Lady of Caed Nua was just Claria, and although she wasn’t born in Gilded Vale, she was raised in the small town alongside Edėr and Woden. A bookworm at heart, she worked at the inn and honed her culinary skills, baking those honey cakes Edėr loved (she was part of the reason why he loved them so) and learning every trick of the trade, in hopes of becoming the best chef Eora had ever seen. When she wasn’t in the kitchen with her knives and pans, she was in the library, reading anything she deemed interesting. Often times she was accompanied by Edér but he’d be kicked out before he even finished a book for loudly scolding her every time she moved. It always knocked off his counting of her numerous freckles dotting her face.
She was orphaned at a young age, to parents who just weren’t meant to be parents. If you ask her, she doesn’t remember much about them except they used to chew that awful drug. Any thought of svef still makes her stomach roll and she worries whenever Edér takes out his pipe for a smoke.
But the Teylecgs took her in - this tiny, blonde child who had nothing to offer - and she is forever grateful to them. Raised like a daughter, she was the one who caused the least trouble compared to the boys but had her own flair for mischief. Claria discovered her cipher abilities when she was a young child, and since then has incorporated those skills into her pranks against the Teylecg brothers. She was a bit wacky - no one in Gilded Vale had those skills, at least not the ones who stayed - but Woden and Edér loved her for who she was.
Over time, her relationship with the brothers changed with the rumours of St. Waidwen planning to invade the Dyrwood. Woden was flighty, aching to do something, Edér and Claria more nervous than anything that this could be their god. But the war ended up splitting their family for good when she woke up to Edér flinging ever horrid thing he could think of at his brother in a blind rage to prevent Woden from enlisting and him doing it anyways. The absence was strange for her at first, but when she woke months later to Woden’s birthday, she cracked. That was it for her. To see the tension finally snap and cause a chasm between the two brother, her two best friends, spurred her into action, leading to her own fight with Edér. They broke up on terrible terms, ones he thought he’d never be able to amend.
When he returned from the war, she was gone. Can’t say he wasn’t heartbroken, but he got through it, even if it meant making up twenty different lives she lived without him and driving himself half-insane wondering if she was dead or alive or worse. It was only chance for them to meet again decades later. She was a brunette now (suddenly he had a thing for brunettes), godless, alone, and without any memory of who he was. She was a bit more rough around the edges, insensitive, but still had her golden heart and her songbird voice. His gut had a good feeling about her, even if they didn’t know eachother anymore, and that was enough for him.

let me explain you little shits @steven--with-a-v @delightfullyterrible @raziyekroos
This girl lives 2000kms away from me so for every added 1000kms of distance between the two of us- I take away 50% of her girlfriend privileges which leaves her with only 25%.
the only way these privileges can be restored is if she takes me to Paris where I find out that she accidentally started a cult once or if she drives a weird-ass-svef-smth dagger through her chest cause she’s insane. Either option works for me I’m not v picky
the math might not be perfect fam but my logic is pretty tight byeeee
just realised that I’m officially the age that Alec was when he became Consul. That man has a husband, two kids, is president of an entire race whereas I have 1/4th a girlfriend and seven mental illnesses. I’d say we’re both doing pretty great.
#tell me this doesn’t make perfect sense skskkshssks#adult relationships are hard 0/10 would not recommend fam

August Member Spotlight
NCTA interviewed Teaching Garage’s founder, Janice Lanthrop for our August Member Spotlight. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting NC start-up company.
Teaching Garage creates tools to inspire the next generation of innovators. Its first product, Design SySTEM, is the first digital engineering curriculum for elementary schools focused on innovation, iteration, collaboration, and the Engineering Design Process by way of introducing different fields of engineering to young learners.
The company works with schools across the U.S. (e.g., Silicon Valley, Boston, NYC, rural WA, and more).
Teaching Garage has recently expanded into North Carolina (and is now headquartered in Raleigh), and is currently in conversations with local schools and district leaders about effective tools and professional development services that would bring innovation-based STEM education into NC elementary schools.
What do you love about doing business in NC? It's clear that educators in NC are deeply committed to serving both the academic and socio-emotional developments of all students. I frequently have the opportunity to share the passion to make an impact on students' lives with educators, parents, engineers, and business leaders, which demonstrates the desires and efforts to use cross-industry collaboration and cooperation to best prepare our students for the modern workforce.
Fun Facts about Teaching Garage: Teaching Garage hosted a star-studded Innovation in Education conference in 2015 with the vision to spur cross-industry discussion and collaboration in the effort to innovate within traditional education.
The conference featured former NYC Chancellor of Education, Joel Klein. Additional speakers included Ellen Bialo, Founder & President of Interactive Educational Systems Design, Richard Achee (Strategic Partner Manager at Google for Education), Scott Kinney (Senior Vice President at Discovery Education), Kobi Yamada (best-selling author and CEO of Compendium), Andrew Arenge (NBC Education Nation), Adam Fried (Superintendent of Harrington Park School District, NJ), Christopher Lohse (Vice President of Government Affairs at Renaissance Learning), Lisa Nielsen (Director of Digital Engagement and Professional Learning, Division of Instructional and Information Technology at NYC Department of Education), Alex Torpey (Former Mayor of South Orange, NJ), Stephanie Lo (Director of Programs at TED-Ed), and Janice Lathrop (Teaching Garage), Jeanette Duffy (Cause Platforms Manager at UNICEF Ventures), and Jae Gardner (Founder and CEO of The Ivy Key).
Teaching Garage stands out as an education startup in that it is deliberate about fostering discussion between stakeholders from different sectors to spur the most creative and effective ideas that would truly innovate in education.
Corporate Culture? Although I am the only full-time employee at Teaching Garage, I work with teachers, administrators, contractors, and partners who share the vision of empowering students of all backgrounds to innovate, problem-solve, and self-advocate towards the future they want to create. As the company grows, I plan to help foster a culture where unique personal strengths and ways of thinking are not only embraced, but also expressed through the tools to innovate.
Greatest Obstacles and How to Overcome? One of the greatest challenges in working in education is that it's hard to compete with the larger and more established vendors and publishers that schools are already aware of and using, even if the startup has created something incredibly valuable for the classroom. Through the help of many colleagues and mentors in education, I've prepared Teaching Garage to be in the education marketplace in the long-run by taking the time to present at conferences and speak with principals, teachers, superintendents, parents, potentially partners about the work Teaching Garage is doing in order to organically get the word out that Teaching Garage exists, and it's doing something important for schools
Recent Awards?
Teaching Garage Awards Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF) iHub Pitch Challenge Winner Mass Challenge Semi-Finalist TiE Boston Challenge Winner Janice Lanthrop (Founder) Achievements: Association of American Publishers On the Rise Award Honoree School Board Member in NYC (starting in School Year 2017-2018)
What’s in store for Teaching Garage? Continue to create tools that will help teachers and schools both innovate the classroom and help give students the tools for innovation. I have plans to create additional publications, then venture into the VR space.
The best way is to email [email protected] or check out photos of student work on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/teachinggarage.
If you are interested in submitting a piece for our Member Spotlight, please contact Rachel Kennedy.
