I need to celebrate and everyone I know is acting like it was a given instead of something I worked hard for. So I'm coming to you guys.
Last time I was in college, a decade ago, my GPA was a 1.something.
I finished high-school in the bottom 20-30 kids.
Last time I had all A's was early middle school or elementary school.
And I just finished my fall semester of my freshman year with a 4.0 GPA. I never thought it would happen. I want to cry, I want to shout it from the skies.
I did that! I got a 4.00!!
I just needed someone to hear it and understand that this was a victory i fought for and not a given.

Hello friends! Popping back in briefly, as promised, to let you know that Secrets of the Past is available today in both ebook and paperback! Follow this link for retailers
For those of you who might be new followers or generally only follow the Narnia, Star Wars, or Princess Bride posts (no worries, I do the same), Secrets of the Past is the third and final book of the Pauline Gray series, a collection of mystery novellas set in a little town called Canton in northern NY state during the 1930s.
Canton is an unusual place: it is located between the Adirondack mountain region and the St Lawrence River region, and home to both St Lawrence University and SUNY Canton. Its next-door town of Potsdam is home to Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam. It is closer to Ottawa than it is to any large US city. In its heyday, it had a gorgeous Opera House, a fancy hotel, a bustling train station, and it played host to many of New York City's elite wanting to escape from the big city. By the 1930s, it was not quite so popular, but it still had that peculiar blend of rural farm life and more cosmopolitan imports thanks to the colleges and its location--the perfect setting for some quiet mysteries featuring a detective protagonist who would really rather spend her time researching obscure historical topics but whose sense of justice keeps dragging her into solving mysteries, and who finds an unexpected community of friends as a result.
Canton also happens to be the town where I lived for the first twenty-one years of my life, which added a slightly more personal touch to these stories, and made for some amazingly fun research by way of calling my dad and saying, "hey, did Grandma and Grandpa or any of your aunts and uncles tell you anything about ____?" or, "since the Opera House was still standing when you were a kid, can you tell me what it looked like?" or, "what road should I locate this particular house on?" It's a research method I highly recommend, especially if you are lucky enough to have been born into a story-telling family like I was--not only does my dad spin marvelous tales from his youth, his parents, aunts, and uncles all did the same, so he has a wonderful repository of what life was like in the '30s tucked away in his memory.
The first book is Candles in the Dark, the second Diamonds to Dust, and the third, released today, is Secrets of the Past. I hope you'll give them a try!

Introducing NYPA’s Interns
Welcome to NYPA’s 2018 Summer Intern blog series. Each week, we’ll be featuring several interns working across NYPA’s various sites and departments. Read on to learn more about our interns and why they chose to work at NYPA!
Many developmental interns have taken full-time positions at NYPA. NYPA was named one of America’s Best Mid-Size Employers by Forbes in 2018. To search openings, visit nypa.gov/careers.
Haluk Oz is interning with the Human Resources & Enterprise Shared Services department at NYPA’s White Plains office. He is from Plano, Texas and has a B.S. from the University of North Texas and a M.A. from Columbia University. He said that his favorite course was Strategic Talent Management because it sparked his interest in a learning and development career focus. He also explained that he finds innovations in sustainable energy the most interesting aspect of the energy industry, and he enjoys the welcoming professional community that comprises NYPA. In five years, Haluk hopes to be advancing his career within the field of learning and development.
Ashley Livingston is a Project Management Intern at NYPA’s St. Lawrence Project. She’s from Lisbon, NY and is studying Civil and Environmental Engineering Technology at SUNY Canton. She said her favorite classes have been her soil, hydro, and environmental classes because she finds the versatility of water and other compounds extremely interesting. She also explained that she’s most interested in using water to make electricity, and that she enjoys working at NYPA because everyone has been very nice and professional and she finds the St. Lawrence dam fascinating from an engineering standpoint. In five years, she hopes to be working as a Civil or Environmental Engineer, perhaps at NYPA or another state agency, and getting her Professional Engineering license.
Igor Portnoy is a Metering Engineering Intern at NYPA’s 500 MW site in Queens. He is from Queens, NY and is currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University. He said that his favorite courses have been Intro to Power Engineering and Sensors & Measurements because they have showed him “the vastness of our grid system and the intricacies that go into something that seems initially simple, but is rather much more complex.” He also explained that he finds real-time operation of the energy grid the most interesting and important aspect of the energy industry, and that he enjoys working at NYPA because he appreciates how NYPA has made “many strides in the digital sphere with advances such as New York Energy Manager and the ISOC” while also providing low cost power. In five years, he hopes to “improve data acquisition systems such as SCADA for real time operation of the system, particularly for renewable energy sources such as wind which can cause issues in voltage and frequency for the grid.”

Prompt 4: Dynamic of a Restaurant
For my dining out experience, I chose Mamma Lucia's. Mamma Lucia's is located in Potsdam, NY. I live locally to SUNY Canton and have always wanted to go to Mamma Lucia's. As far as restaurants in this area go, Mamma Lucia's is on the fancier side. They have quality food that can be a little pricey, but worth it. I highly recommend the Margherita pizza! The service is nice and pleasant! They have a nice wine selection that you can enjoy while they set a sophisticated vibe with music sung by artists like Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. People that attend this restaurant are typically around my age, 22, or older, and it is a diversity of people that show up to enjoy their food. When I was dining and observing, I noticed that people dressed up for this restaurant and appeared to be doing well in terms of money. Overall, it was a great experience with great food!

Introduction
My name is Hailey and I'm taking trendsetting in digital media because my friend Zeb took a course with Sean last semester and said it was phenomenal. I have always been interested in media but never really found the time to study it academically. This class is a chance to step out of my comfort zone and study something that I have almost no familiarity with! I hope to gain some insight on emerging trends in digital media and to network and form relationships with people who I normally wouldn't have the chance to.
I am from Watertown, NY, which is an hour north of Syracuse (basically Canada). I went to Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY for undergrad where I majored in biology and played lacrosse. I graduated in three years and took a gap year just in time for COVID-19 to hit. I had originally planned to go to the University of Kentucky for law school during that gap year but backed out at the last second. It turned out being the best decision I could have made with the onset of COVID in addition to the amazing relationships I have been able to form here at Syracuse Law. I'm currently in my last year of law school and am involved in just about everything possible, as I am an avid over-committer.
My family consists of my mom, dad, brother, dog, and my brother's guinea pig by association (I guess). My mom is Tammy and my dad is Scott. My mom has been a stay at home mom since I was about 9 and my dad is a banker at a local bank in Watertown. My brother's name is Carter and he is currently a junior at SUNY Canton in Canton, NY. He is a sports management major and plays lacrosse. One fun fact about him is that he will actually be working the World University Games in Lake Placid this upcoming January for one of his classes! My dog is an 11 year old chocolate lab who I love more than I could ever possibly love any human. Lastly, Bucky is the guinea pig that I didn't want to like but somehow ended up growing to find adorable and hilarious.
I grew up as a kid who played a sport 24/7. I played the two most demanding girls sports at my high school (basketball and lacrosse) and spent the majority of my childhood with the same two groups of girls for those sports. There was a lot of drama associated with high school sports, but looking back I really did enjoy all those years of constant travel, fun and friendships.
Lastly, I don't really have a specific area of media focus since this is the first time in my life that I am focusing on media at all. However, I think I would really enjoy looking at international tech and apps such as tiktok or voice/digital assistants such as Alexa. The concept of analytics/targeting/customizing is also extremely fascinating to me. I think that the concept of voice/digital assistants must somehow be linked to the targeting/customizing concept. TikTok is also an example of an app that uses such targeting and customizing. I'm also super interested in a media company that my friend, Zeb, is currently working on! I think I am going to learn a lot about types of media that I didn't even know existed (or knew minimal about) in this class, such as blockchain, deep fakes, and XR. I think that out of all the classes I have taken in law school, this class might be the one where I have walked in on the first day probably knowing the least about the subject matter compared to everyone else in the room, but I am excited to learn about something not law-related for once!
