Eurovision 2007 - Number 37 - Elitsa Todorova & Stoyan Yankulov - "Вода"
youtube
2007 was the third year that Bulgaria had entered Eurovision. On the previous two attempts, they'd finished nineteenth and seventeenth in the semi-final with entries that aren't among those that even Eurovision fans can recall easily. They'd never qualified or come close to qualifying. This year, the semi-final was so big that only about one-third of the countries entering would go through. It was not the ideal year to send a couple of drummers to Eurovision as your entry. But that's what the people of Bulgaria did.
Elitsa Todorova and Stoyan Yankulolv are both percussionists and occasional singers. Elitsa's musical background is the Bulgarian folk traditions, while Stoyan has worked in jazz and big bands. They met in 2003 and immediately formed a musical partnership. This initially resulted in a group called Drumboy, and they played a fusion of jazz and folk to intrigued audiences.
Cut to 2007 and the Bulgarian national final Pesen Na Evrovizija 2007. Despite their previous Eurovision experiences, the musicians of Bulgaria were beginning to flock to the competition. This year, there were twenty-one entries including some big names from the worlds of Bulgarian music, entertainment and TV. Among them were Elitsa and Stoyan now using their own names having dropped the Drumboy.
Their song was immediately favoured by BNT. It was one of three songs chosen internally to progress straight into the final without having to qualify. When the Bulgarian public got to hear Вода (Voda/Water) for the first time they could understand why. Voda is a song unlike anything that had been sent by Bulgaria before. Or indeed any other country. A combination EDM and folk - that dizzying fusion that has become so desirable. It sounded more modern than (almost) everything else in either Pesen Na Evrovizija or Eurovision in 2007. At the same time it sounds genuinely authentically Bulgarian.
The underlying pulsing synth rhythm is augmented by both Elitsa and Stoyan drumming their hearts out on a variety of different drums from different cultures. Elitsa's singing soars clear over the top - a simple song about rivers and a boy and his pony. Stoyan joins in with some onomatopoeic beatboxing for a while. It's folk music. It's sweaty dance floor EDM. It's what every Eurofan wants. Distinctive and instantly popular.
Bulgaria agreed. The televoters of Pesen Na Evrovizija 2007 voted for it by the bucket-load. It won with six times the number of votes of the second place song. In Helsinki, they were the first song on stage in the semi-final. Not a great slot. They still finished sixth of all twenty-eight songs and qualified. It was the first time Bulgaria had made it through to the grand final. There they went one better. The irresistible drumming got Bulgaria to fifth place, easily their best finish to date and a song that is still ranked inside the top 200 of the best Eurovision songs ever by the annual songfestival.be top 250 (note this was written four days before the new 2024 top 250 list was released).
For Elitsa and Stoyan this meant instant huge fame back home as well as a place on the Eurovision circuit. An album was released as well as other songs. Magazines and newspapers carried interviews. Elitsa was voted woman of the year by Grazia magazine. Stoyan received a UN award for promoting Bulgarian culture around the world. They got invited back to represent Bulgaria at Eurovision again in 2013.
Both Elitsa and Stoyan went on to release music solo again, each heading back to what they knew best. Elitsa worked with Arabella von Karajan daughter of internationally renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan as well as inventing her own drum. Here she is singing Велико (Veliko/Great) with DJ 89 in 2022.

It had been a hard road, yet it was one that had been off the beaten path. Travel without horse or carriage hadn’t been an issue. Only the uneven terrain of the untamed wilds had been. Liam had found a river close by and had taken the opportunity to wash away the grim of travel. A welcomed refresher of cool water against bareskin and a chance to wash travel stained clothes. Night had started to settle by time he returned to the small area he had decided to rest at and the rabbit he had hunted roasted over a crackling fire.
He laid recumbently on his bedroll on his side with a book in front of him. When he had tended to the camp, he had made sure it was compacted enough where all had been in reach. His leather armor was being used as a pillow of sorts, his bow and quiver had been placed against a tree. The only weapon he kept close by was next to the book. One of the handaxes that he had purchased from the last settlement he had come across.
As the fire crackled and warmed his bare skin, a noise raised his attention from the pages of the book. Cautiously, he rose from his position, a hand reaching for the ax by his side in preparation. Hand weapons felt so weighted to him, more comfortable with a longbow in his hand but such a weapon was never best to wield in tighter quarters. “Is someone there ? Announce y’self and speak friend or enemy.”

🤝👤 for writing ask games
thank ya for asking! :D
🤝 Have you ever collaborated with somebody and written/created something together? Was it fun or difficult to do?
OOH so i've created a whole semi-open species called Kallitrix with my childhood bestie!! obligatory invite to our discord below (we also have a toyhouse world) but anyway, i had this idea about a young dream witch who adventured across the world with her shapeshifting shadow companion. my friend loves magic and witches, so we used this idea as a basis for making a whole bunch of ocs together.
LATER we reused this lore for familiars created by witches to help them out with basic requests, tasks, and so on, and we named them kallitrix :D it's been an absolute pleasure to work with my bestie. their mind is *chef's kiss* and it's awesome when we just hype each other up abt ideas we come up with, or seem to share a braincell and randomly converge on ideas, things like that.
technically, i also think of rping as writing a story collaboratively, so when i was into that, it was also fun and uniquely challenging to keep the story going, see what our characters do, etc.
👤 Share a description, drawing, Picrew, etc. of your OC!
OK ummm i have so many but i'll pick dmitri bc he's my favorite who lives rent free in my head.
i always get stuck at sketching when i make character refs, but his other, more complete ones are outdated now so :P
dimitar is a cardiac surgeon and former combat medic! he's kinda cold and takes a while to warm up to new people, but he's very caring as a person and a hoot to be around when he's comfortable (or drunk). he can be pretty harsh and has a dark, sarcastic sense of humor. he also enjoys hiking, winter sports, and ballroom dancing :) additionally, he's very proud of his home country, bulgaria, and is a big fan of roses. he met his best friend, stoyan, while they were in the army together!
#ask#my ocs#dimitar daskalov#kallitrix#this turned out to be a pretty long answer lol#my other fav ocs are crane fei fang alex stoyan and katya#my kalli ocs are bobby heath nagami diethelm and amadeo#pls lemme know if anyone wants to hear about them lol

Music for the End of Time
"Music for the End of Time", a review of Matthias Glasner's film 'Dying' on the European Film Festival in South Africa, until 20 October 2024.
