I would very much enjoy it if s5 introduced a queer coded guy in the first few eps and everyone just assumed that he's Will's new love interest and that after Mike rejects Will, then Will is going to get with this new guy..

But then the guy starts flirting with Mike instead.

And Will was happy to support Mike's relationship with his sister (who is now Mike's ex), but he is NOT going to let this random dude flirt with the love of his life!!!!!

Thinking about how people think Byler isn't reciprocated but only because it's spread apart.

In season 4, episode 8, Will tells Mike that he is the heart of the party, leading them into battle in a painting of their DnD characters.

But in season 2, episode 8, Mike emphasized to Will a story about how he saved the party in DnD.

In season 1, episode 1, Mike tells Lucas and Dustin that they should start a dangerous search party because Will risked himself by throwing a fireball the previous night to save them and would do it for them.

Season 4 isn't Will loving Mike unreciprocated. Season 4 is Will finally reciprocating Mike's love that has just been seemingly dormant for a little while, or quiet.

One belief that I have which shows up repeatedly in my story ideas is that (a) Will would try to date a girl (despite knowing that he’s gay) if he hadn’t been taken to the UD in S1 and (b) Mike would not try to date a girl if El hadn’t shown up. (I don’t feel super-strongly about Mike’s sexuality, but I will usually write him as gay because I think it’s the funnest option.)

Random headcanon that Will's first crush was actually Lucas Sinclair because Will thinks he's so manly and brave so Mike started sulking like a jealous puppy pulling Will away from Lucas and making it his life mission to protect Will at all cost, and at first Will find it really funny and stupid but then something happened with his dad (or Troy) and Mike stood up for him taking a punch at the action.

So it was sunday late afternoon, Mike's parents at work, Nancy at Barb's, all oblivious on Mike's huge bruise on the cheeks as the two boys sat quietly at his basement's couch. Will, worried while dabbing an ice pack on the forming bruise, Mike, watching Will. Will wanted to say he shouldn't have done that, that he should've just let them say what they want. But Mike looks a little too determined for Will to tell him off so he just lets him be. His little heart fluttering too much— the moment he realized he's different from the rest. A bittersweet memory really.
