Arne confessing his love to Holmfrid in the last ever original cast performance of Så som i himmelen is something that lives in my head rent-free, but, like, in a nice way

Does crying every time* Philip Jalmelid sang something during the first time I saw Så som i himmelen count as magical? Pathetic? Something in between?
In short, I have never related to any fictional character like I related to Daniel that afternoon (not in the sense that Daniel is exactly like me in every way, but in the sense that emotionally, he makes absolute sense to me. If that makes any sense at all), and no other piece of theatre has ever made me react in such a strong way, either.
Here's a good live performance of the first song of many that made me cry, and my favourite musical theatre song to this day:
youtube
Hey hop, please tell me about a magical theatre experience you've had, or about your favourite song/musical ✨️
(Or: recommend your favourite theatre-related Tumblr blogs! I need more theatre on my dash)
#*sans Daniel's last two scenes with Lena#because to be quite frank I think that's where this A-tier musical dips its toes into mediocrity#just before pulling itself together again and delivering one of the most beautiful finales of musical theatre history#(though it's very easy to mess up via clunky direction but I'm not talking about that)#anyway! listen to Så som i himmelen. it's good#also the ending of the performance I linked here? *chef's kiss*#it could never ever in a million years be done like that onstage because story-wise the song needs to end on a very subdued note#but as a part of an out-of-context live performance?? I love#SSIH meltdown tag#music

Theory: Så som i himmelen will never be half as popular here in Finland as it is in Sweden, not because we can't relate to the story or don't like the music – but because we Finns, as a people, are significantly more averse to expressing emotions while watching theatre (or otherwise, but that's besides my point) than Swedes.
It's a show that's purpose-built to make the audience cry. As such, it's always going to make us feel slightly awkward, and, thus, wary of it.
#I'm generalizing of course! but it's a very consistently different vibe to watch the same shows in Finland and in Sweden#Nordic musical theatre#SSIH meltdown tag

Losing my mind about the second Finnish production of Så som i himmelen cutting the whole prologue again.
#like. sure you can do that#but then you need to write a new Pity the Child style song for Daniel in the second act where he explains why he is the way he is#if you just choose not to explain his life story at all then it's not really the same character/story anymore is it??#it's just a weird show that keeps hinting at its main character's trauma for 2.5 hours and never bothers to elaborate#haven't felt this annoyed at a creative decision since they cut My Nose Ain't Broken from Rocky Stuttgart 84 years ago#(the Tore magically becoming abled thing doesn't make me annoyed. it makes me feel sad offended and disappointed so it's a bit different)#I need to banish this production and everything I ever heard of it from my mind for good#but yeah. dunno what went wrong with this production exactly but I expected a lot better from the people involved#SSIH meltdown tag

Äskeisen jippijeesuomalainenmusiikkiteatteri-avautumisen teille tarjoilee... syvälle sydämeeni tallentunut muisto siitä, miten Youtubessa julkaistu Den tid jag har -demo oli kirjaimellisesti ainoa syy, että menin katsomaan Så som i himmelenin Tukholmaan.
Ilman sitä viisiminuuttista (sataantuhanteen kertaan toistettuna) olisi jäänyt monet hyvät itkut itkemättä, ei mulla muuta.

New Så som i himmelen fan theory: Stig is a fake priest. He flunked out of university before his first semester was over but faked a diploma to get employed in Ljusåker.
Would explain a lot, in my humble opinion.

missing Så som i himmelen original cast
#the thing is.#I'm absolutely not one of those people who thinks original cast is always the best or whatever#there were maybe four individual performances in OG SSIH that I don't think have been surpassed by any subsequent production I've seen#the direction wasn't the be-all-end-all either. it really fell into some uncanny valley of theatrical awkwardness during the last 5 min#but as a whole? pure magic. to me.#just what I needed to see right there and then. magical energy to sit there in the front and cry together with hundreds of Swedes#for me personally I don't think any other cast/production of SSIH will ever surpass this one. for sentimental reasons.#I have made this exact post before. I will make it again#SSIH meltdown tag

The thing is, I want my Daniel Daréuses middle-aged or, at the very least, firmly approaching middle age... and after some soul-searching, I have to admit this is less about the story feeling more authentic or interesting that way, and more about the fact that I, personally, enjoy watching sad middle-aged men onstage.
The heart wants what the heart wants, I guess. Future productions, please cast accordingly.

Missing the original production of Så som i himmelen.
#I think the subsequent productions have done a lot of things better than the original#but the original was so much more than the sum of its parts in a way I haven’t felt with any other production#the source material is of course imperfect just like every other piece of theatre out there and the direction also had some troubled bits#but as a whole? it was a perfect experience and I don’t think I’d fix anything even if I could go back in time to do so#this post was brought to you by looping the Den tid jag har Allsång på Skansen video on Youtube#SSIH meltdown tag

In other news... for whatever reason, today, I’ve been thinking about the last time I and @obiskus saw Så som i himmelen Stockholm in February 2020.
After everything that’s happened since, the memory of traveling to Sweden, going to see live theatre, visiting the backstage, and hugging the actors feels like a scene from some weird, implausible, possibly fictional alternate reality.
Yesterday would’ve been my last time seeing the original production of Så som i himmelen, had they been able to do the Göteborg performances they rescheduled for this spring. They’re still trying to reschedule it for next year... but that doesn’t really help with the fact that right now, I miss the production so much it almost hurts.
#I've been listening to Tonerna on repeat for an hour now. the most beautiful musical finale of all times.#SSIH meltdown tag

Maybe it’s a good thing Så som i himmelen the musical has even less of an online fandom than Jekyll & Hyde the musical...
BECAUSE THE ANGSTY FANFIC I COULD SQUEEZE OUT OF THAT STORY, OH BOY, OH MAN
#mind me not... working on a pretty monotonous task here and listening to SSIH and just thinking#who knows though. my creativity is in equal parts motivated by the potential amount of attention and the obscurity of the source material#anyway... HKT release a promotional video with music in the summer of 2021 challenge#SSIH meltdown tag

I’m willing to go as far as to say Den tid jag har is the best musical song of all times.
