Saving Private Ryan (1998); AFI #71

The next film on the list is one of the best films of any genre, Saving Private Ryan (1998). This is what I consider the best war film of all time despite how overwhelming it is to watch. Maybe it is because it is so difficult to watch, since the movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and received five trophies. Because of the ensemble cast and almost complete lack of women, the film was never going to garner much in the way of acting awards. Like the soldiers who they hoped to portray, these actors shouldn’t have expected much individual recognition. This movie affected me greatly, and I would like to delve into that after going through the story line.

MAJOR SPOILER WARNING!!! BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THE FILM, EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE REVEALED AS FAR AS PLOT IS GIVEN AWAY BELOW!!!

In the present day, an elderly man visits the Normandy Cemetery with his family. At a tombstone, he falls to his knees in anguish. The establishing shots showing the mass of grave stones is overwhelming from the get-go. The movie transitions from the graveyard to a landing boat at the battle of Normandy. Be prepared because it is about to get rough.

On the morning of June 6, 1944, American soldiers land at Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy invasion. Everything goes bad immediately as machine guns and mortars literally tear the landing soldiers to shreds. Soldiers are screaming for their mothers as they die on the beach. There is no going back into the ocean so the soldiers have run into the machine gun fire. Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks) of the 2nd Ranger Battalion leads a breakout from the beach that makes it through to the German encampment. It is about 15 minutes of carnage and nobody will blame you if you want to forward through this until the action cools down. Elsewhere on the beach, a dead soldier lies face-down in the bloody surf; his pack is stenciled Ryan, S. It is at this point I would recommend taking a breather if you need one.

Continuing on, we are shifted to Washington, D.C., at the War Department (keep an eye out for Bryan Cranston with one arm), where General George C. Marshall learns that three of the four sons of the Ryan family were killed in action within a short time of one another. Daniel Ryan in New Guinea shortly before D-Day, Sean Ryan at Omaha Beach, and Peter Ryan at Utah Beach: all dead with letters arriving the same day for their mother. The fourth son, James Francis Ryan, is with the 101st Airborne Division somewhere in Normandy. After reading Abraham Lincoln's Bixby letter, which is meant to comfort grieving parents, aloud, Marshall orders Ryan found and brought home.

Three days after D-Day, Miller receives orders to find Ryan and bring him back. He chooses seven men from his company for the job—T/Sgt. Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Privates First Class Richard Reiben (Edward Burns) and Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel), Privates Stanley Mellish (Adam Goldberg) and Daniel Jackson (Barry Pepper), T/4 medic Irwin Wade (Giovanni Ribisi) and T/5 Timothy Upham (Jeremy Davies), an interpreter from the 29th Infantry Division. The group moves out to Neuville where they meet a squad of the 101st engaged against the enemy and both Ted Danson and Paul Giamatti show up. THe group searching for Ryan bump into a stranded French family who try to give over their children but a German sniper breaks up the party. Caparzo is killed by a German sniper, who is then killed by Jackson (who makes the most amazing shot that legends are made of). They locate a Private James Ryan (Nathan Fillion), only to learn that he is James Frederick Ryan. On the point of giving up, the Captain starts asking random passing soldiers and learns that Ryan is defending an important bridge in Ramelle.

Near Ramelle, Miller decides to neutralize a German machine gun position at a derelict radar station, despite his men's misgivings. It does not go well and the medic, Wade, is killed in the process. They take a German soldier that they name Steamboat Willie (Joerg Stadler) who gives up willingly and pleads for his life. The men are angry and want to kill the soldier since they can’t take any extras, so, at Upham's urging, Miller frees the surviving German soldier. Losing confidence in Miller's leadership, Reiben declares his intention to desert, prompting a confrontation with Horvath, who threatens to shoot him. Miller defuses the standoff by disclosing his civilian career as a high school English teacher in a small Pennsylvania town.

At Ramelle, they find Ryan (Matt Damon) among a small group of paratroopers preparing to defend the key bridge against an imminent German attack. Miller tells Ryan that his brothers are dead, and that he was ordered to bring him home. Ryan is distressed about his brothers, but is unwilling to leave his post. Miller combines his unit with the paratroopers in defense of the bridge. He devises a plan to ambush the enemy with two .30-caliber machine guns, Molotov cocktails, anti-tank mines, and improvised satchel charges made from socks. It is basically suicide so the bridge is wired to explode in case it can’t be held. 

Now is a time to take a breather if you need one because it is about to get bad again. Elements of the 2nd SS Panzer Division arrive with two Tiger tanks and two Marder tank destroyers, all protected by infantry. The small American group holds off the force the best they can, Although they inflict heavy damage on the Germans, nearly all of the paratroopers, along with Jackson, Mellish and Horvath, are killed. It turns out that Steamboat Willie joined the group and he personally kills Mellish with a Nazi youth knife (it is horrible) and shoots Miller Captain Miller as he attempts to blow up the bridge. Miller crawls to retrieve the bridge detonator, and fires ineffectually but defiantly with his pistol at an oncoming tank. As the tank reaches the bridge, an American P-51 Mustang flies overhead and destroys the tank, after which American armored units arrive to rout the remaining Germans. With the Germans in full retreat, Upham emerges from hiding and shoots Steamboat Willie dead, having witnessed him shooting Miller, but allows his fellow soldiers to flee.

Miller tells Ryan to “earn this” before dying from his injuries. As the scene transitions to the present, Ryan is revealed to be the veteran from the beginning of the film, and is standing in front of Miller's grave expressing his gratitude for the sacrifices Miller and his unit made in the past. Ryan asks his wife if he was worthy of such sacrifice, to which she replies that he is. The final scene shows Ryan saluting Miller's grave and fades to the American flag gently waving in the breeze.

I really have a hard time getting through this film without pausing and taking a breather. I saw the film in the theater when I was 18, so my friends and I were all around the age that these soldiers would have been that rushed that beach and retook France. It was truly terrifying. Now I am old and have back issues, so I wouldn’t be put on a front line, but the kids that I work with and care for would be the exact age to be caught in a draft and that scares me even more. The creative ways in which man finds to kill one another is the greatest threat to humanity. 

The first two times I saw the film, I did not realize that it was the same German soldier that the group had captured who eventually killed many of the group we were following. It really changes the message in the end. I had thought that Captain Miller had showed his humanity showing mercy, but it turns out that this mercy is misplaced. Now it seems like Spielberg is saying that neither humanity, nor religion, nor innocence, nor skill, nor even intelligence can save a man in the heat of battle. The only way to live is to watch the back of your group and protect each other like family.

There was a little bit of a travesty that occurred at the Academy in early 1999, because this film lost out in the Best Picture category to Shakespeare in Love. This is the same year that also saw Saving Private Ryan, The Truman Show, Life is Beautiful, Elizabeth, and The Thin Red Line. There had to be something behind that because I wouldn’t consider the winner even in the top 5. Shakespeare in Love is considered one of the worst Best Picture winners along with Crash and The Artist. Oscars are not everything and this movie is one of the best examples of this.

When I say that some of the scenes from this movie are difficult, I really do mean it. There was a hotline set up for people who have PTSD that was triggered by the film. One of the actual members of the 101st Airborne, Major Richard Winters, was consulted about the occurrences surrounding the attack. He said that it brought up many memories that he had worked hard to suppress because he had been taught that war veterans couldn’t express the psychological pain of battle. He also said that it was an important film that revealed what war was really like.

On Veteran’s Day in 2001 and 2004, ABC aired the film uncut with limited commercial interruptions. Living in California, I was able to watch the film on both of those occasions and remember getting my girlfriend at the time to watch in 2004. The film has become like a memorial to Americans lost in the European Campaign during WW2, so I treat viewing as a badge of honor and understanding, no matter how difficult it is to watch.

This film is a pretty easy answer when it comes to the standard questions for the most part. Does this film belong on the AFI top 100? Of course. It is the new benchmark for which all American war films will be judged. It is historically accurate, it is beautifully shot and directed, and it leaves a lasting impression far longer than just about any movie I have seen. Would I recommend it? This one has an age warning. It is not appropriate for young children because the first and last battle scenes are nightmare fuel. Even worse, they are apparently very realistic. It is hard to recommend something that is so scarring, but it will keep people for glorifying battle. It is horrific and should be avoided as much as possible. And that is a lesson that I believe this movie teaches better than any other. So please give this movie a watch and feel free to take a break if you need it.

AU Thursday: Tell Me Where To Find Shelter -- Layers of Victor

Saw this meme going around the #fallout4 tag a while back (I believe I specifically ganked it from @radbeetle), and thought it might be fun to do for my Sole Survivor!Victor. And my Malkavian!Alice, but let’s start with SS!Victor. XD

LAYER ONE: THE OUTSIDE

- Name: Victor Fitzwilliam Van Dort

- Eye Color: Very dark brown – it can be very hard to tell the difference between pupil and iris!

- Hair Style/Color: Black, generally combed back with two "tufts" of bangs falling over what little forehead he has

- Height: Six feet three inches (and thin as a rail)

- Clothing style: Relatively formal pre-War – he grew up in a household that impressed upon him that you wore ties and suits whenever you were in public, and often even in private. Post-War, he spends a lot of time switching between a pair of upgraded Vault suits from Vault 111 while looking for clothes that actually fit his lanky frame. He's a lot more casual in his style once he does – though he still likes a good sweater vest, and he keeps a few suits if he needs to look fancy.

- Best physical feature: Victor would personally say his hands – he's a pianist and a tinkerer, and he appreciates his long reach over a keyboard, along with his ability to finely handle delicate parts when upgrading or repairing things!

LAYER TWO: THE INSIDE

- Fears: Total darkness (as in you can't see ANYTHING – as long as there's some sort of light source, he can manage); blindness (related to previous); small enclosed spaces (being locked in a cryonic pod will do that to a guy); losing those he cares about again (he – has a lot of trauma from seeing Victoria shot, Shaun kidnapped, then trying to open Emily's pod after he finally got out, only to see her corpse half-rotted inside)

- Guilty pleasure: Pre-War, it would have been comics – he was always a little embarrassed about how much he continued to like the adventures of Grognak and the Unstoppables and whatnot after his teenage years (not helped by his mother sneering at the stories). Post-War, though, he ditches the "guilty" part – especially after meeting Kent Connolly and getting to play Silver Shroud. XD I'm not sure he has one post-War – he occasionally feels weird about how much he enjoys modifying his weapons and armor? But that's quite practical as well as pleasurable, so. . .

- Biggest pet peeve: Being rapidly promoted in organizations that he's only just joined (Preston, you're easily one of his best friends, but SERIOUSLY, dude, GENERAL?)

- Ambitions for the future: To continue keeping his little portion of the Commonwealth safe, and start training up someone with some more Charisma to be the General of the Minutemen once he retires (he's still not sure why people follow him when he's so socially awkward)

LAYER THREE: THOUGHTS

- First thoughts waking up: Depends on what wakes him up. If he's waking up on his own, it's generally a variation on "Breakfast? Where breakfast?" If someone else wakes him up, it's generally "Why are you shaking/licking me, I don't wanna get up yet." And if it's combat nearby, it's generally "SHIT WHERE'S MY GUN oh wait are they shooting at me still should find gun."

- What they think about most: All his various responsibilities – finding his son, acting as General of the Minutemen, working with the Railroad, helping the people on the settlements, wondering what the hell is going to happen between him and the Brotherhood of Steel, or him and the Institute. . .it doesn't do much for his anxiety, is what I'm saying.

- What they think about before bed: If he's not exhausted enough just to collapse onto the nearest sleeping surface, then probably what I mentioned above. He's probably up late trying to plan routes to help settlements that have called for assistance and follow leads on the Institute and whatnot.

- What they think their best quality is: Victor would consider it his willingness to be helpful whenever possible. He generally enjoys helping people, and it makes him feel better in general to help improve the Commonwealth in some small way. (Not to mention, him helping out personally with the problems of a lot of the families/communities in the Commonwealth has earned him a lot of friends for his Minutemen! A General so hands-on seems to impress people.)

LAYER FOUR: WHAT’S BETTER?

- Single or group dates: . . .this gets a little harder to answer when he was in a polyamorous relationship pre-War, you know. XD But yeah, Victor prefers one-on-one, or one-on-two in the case of Victoria and Emily. A group date puts the pressure on him to perform like the perfect boyfriend/husband, and he doesn't need the extra stress. Maybe he'd be okay with a double date if it was with some very close friends.

- To be loved or respected: Victor would rather be loved, or at least liked – though part of that is low self-esteem telling him people aren't going to respect him. (Or like him, for that matter.) It's what informs his desire to help people, at least in part.

- Beauty or brains: While Victor isn't immune to a nice face or body, he really likes having someone he can talk to about stuff. Sharing interests is fun, and he appreciates someone who will at least try to keep up with his nattering on about butterflies and robots and whatnot.

- Dogs or cats: Dogs! Victor gets along decently with cats, but he is first and foremost a dog person. He had a dog named Scraps when he was a child, and he, Victoria, and Emily were making plans to adopt one before the bombs fell. Meeting Dogmeat at the Red Rocket really helped pull him out of his post-War "almost everything I knew is gone and I'm a stranger in my own state" funk.

LAYER FIVE: DO THEY?

- Lie: Yup. Victor will tell the usual social "white lies" (even if he's not very good at them), and he's done bigger lies in the past – like not telling his parents that Emily was more than their "roommate." (Of course, that was done not to have a family blowout about him and his wife having a girlfriend.)

- Believe in themselves: Not usually – as stated, Victor has pretty low self-esteem, thanks mostly to growing up with a mother who was criticizing him and everything he was when she wasn't absent doing social climbing stuff. It's hard for him to think of himself as being someone who has worth, sadly. He gets better when he starts seeing more results of his actions in helping the Minutemen and the Railroad, and realizes he's genuinely making a difference for people.

- Believe in love: Yes – his relationship with Victoria and Emily was one of the high points of his pre-War life. He was utterly heartbroken when Victoria was shot, and Emily later died due to the life support to the other pods being cut off. But then later he meets Alice, and. . .well, it takes some time, but he manages to come around to loving and being loved again.

- Want someone: Pre-War, not really – he was in a happy threesome and wasn't currently looking to expand. Post-War, most of his life precludes wanting anyone – though he does develop a bit of a crush on Piper as time goes on. And then, of course, he meets Alice, and eventually ends up wanting her. . . (Yes, in-game I intend for him to romance Piper – and there's a chance in the AU he, Piper, and Alice would end up in a poly situation. We'll see where this goes!)

LAYER SIX: EVER?

- Been on stage: Pre-War, never officially – Nell had him play piano at some of her parties (which was always stressful, as he felt all her guests were either judging him or just hated him for being related to her), but that was as far as performing got. He of course had the speech he was asked to do that he was practicing the day the bombs dropped, but – well, the bombs dropped. Post-War – he probably will have to give some inspirational speeches to his Minutemen troops, which he will somehow get through and then go have a little quiet panic attack somewhere.

- Done chems/drugs: . . .I have occasionally toyed with the headcanon that Victor was unwillingly dosed with Psycho, or a drug like it, back in his Army days and has been haunted by the experience ever since. But other than that, not the hard stuff – Victor doesn't even smoke (he tried once – after nearly coughing up a lung, he refused to ever try again) and he tends not to drink (he's tried that too, and discovered he's an embarrassingly chatty drunk, so he doesn't typically indulge). He will, of course, take Rad-X and Rad-Away, because those are freaking necessary to survive in parts of the Wasteland.

- Changed who you were to fit in: Occasionally attempted, never stuck. He's not good at keeping up a facade. One of his most embarrassing memories is trying to ask a girl to dance at a party his mother dragged him to when he was about 16, imitating the more popular "jock"-kinda guys, and getting laughed at so much he retreated to the buffet for the rest of the night.

LAYER SEVEN: FAVORITES

- Favorite color: Blue

- Favorite animal: Dogs, butterflies

- Favorite movie: Victor will confess to a love for schlocky monster movies, so he was quite enamored of Night of the Fish Men's Revenge when it came out (he's quite excited when he sees it in the projector in Eden Meadows Cinema, and quite sad that he can only get it to play the title screen). He also enjoyed Another Day In the Monster Factory for much the same reasons.

- Favorite game: With his affinity for comic books and a secret love of roleplaying (which becomes not-so-secret once he starts Silver Shrouding), Grognak & The Ruby Ruins quite appeals to him. He likes that it has some replay value too, with changing up your party and whatnot. The action of Pipfall appeals to him too, though that time limit can be stressful!

LAYER EIGHT: AGE

- DOB: June 9th, 2050 (he was 27 and a few months when the bombs dropped)

- Day of their next birthday, they will be: His next birthday according to the game would be June 9th, 2088 – he'd be 238 in terms of time passed, 28 in terms of biology

- Age they lost their virginity: Twenty – Victor had been yanked by the Army into Canada to help with the Sino-American war shortly after graduating high school, but got some leave around his twentieth birthday to go home. He immediately caught back up with his high school sweethearts, Victoria and Emily, and ended up doing the deed with Victoria. They managed to keep it a secret from their conservative parents, fortunately.

- Does age matter: In general? Victor is willing to listen to advice from those older than he is, certainly – though he tends to take it with a grain of salt depending on their obvious biases. In a relationship? Unless one of the parties is a minor, Victor won't get involved, though bigger gaps will probably make him wonder what exactly they see in each other. (He allows this is hypocritical of him to a degree, as Alice is much older than him even taking into account the freezing – but on the flip side, she was Embraced at 20, he was frozen at 27. . .)

LAYER NINE: IN A BOY OR GIRL

- Best personality: Victor likes people who are sweet and kind, but have a tougher or sassier side to them as well. Victoria leaned mostly toward the "sweet" side, but was also pretty determined when it came to getting what she wanted from him; Emily was cheerful and enthusiastic, but if you angered her – wooo boy; Alice of course is snark incarnate, but is kind to people and generally likes helping others. Even Piper is one of the kinder companions, but doesn't shy away from sarcastic comments.

- Best eye color: Well, Victoria and Emily both had blue eyes (of differing shades), and Alice's green eyes were one of the first things that struck Victor about her, sooo. . .blue or green!

- Best hair color: I'm not sure Victor has a preference here – Victoria was a super-light brown, almost gray; Emily was a blonde; Alice has dark hair that looks black or brown depending on the light/how well cared for it is (and she says her hair was almost red when she was a kid!); Piper has dark brown/black hair. I guess pre-War he went for lighter; post-War he goes for darker?

- Best thing to do with a partner: Victor likes finding some sort of creative interest they can share, or at least do at the same time. He would sit in the living room and draw while Victoria embroidered in the afternoons; and he and Emily both played piano, so they'd often have little duets. With Alice, he probably ends up illustrating some of the stories she tells – maybe eventually they throw together a book of sorts, with Piper's help!

LAYER TEN: FINISH THE SENTENCE

- I love: Alice! And the rest of my friends too, of course.

- I feel: completely out of my depth, most of the time.

- I hide: how anxious all of this makes me – not sure how well I'm succeeding, but. . .

- I miss: the life I had before, in Sanctuary.

- I wish: that Victoria and Emily hadn't – that t-they were still here to meet the friends I've made.

Karl Marx’s “On: The Jewish Question” seems a prototype for conflict theory, but has ‘the real jew’ as the 'Haves’ the in place of the 'bourgeois/rich/capitalist’ 'oppressor class’. Conflict theory, icydk, is the collectivist egalitarian pseudoscientific theoretical paradigm taught in sociology, underpinning essentially the whole social justice perspective, and directly encompassing marxist theory, feminist theory, critical race theory, critical theory, gender schema theory (and likely influenced John Money’s gender theory, and builds on gender theory), queer theory, gender critical theory, postmodern theory, lysenkoism (mostly abandoned), standpoint theory,  post colonial theory, animal liberationism, and of course, intersedtional theory which synthesizes them all together wherever they can be synthesized. Marx said the nature of jews is huckstery, he said the real lofe manifestationnof the god of israel is money itself, he said eliminating money would render the jew an equal and normal person. His whole theory, and every conflict theory since, relies on the presupposition the indovodual is irrelevant and what matters is only the aggregate disparities between groups. This turns his theoey ultimately against all boundaries of the individual, their private property and necessarily their innate natural self ownership, their right to self ddetermination. Marx viewed liberalism/individualism as egoism. His whole family was actually jewish, IIRC, he just didnt succeed like they did, he was jealous and a mooch, kind of a beta, likely an aspie if i am to go off the symptomology. He hated them, he was jealous, he wanted success and they had it and he didnt, and so he was basically spot-on like the character Cain from hebrew legend.

Martin Luther. He wrote “On The Jews and Their Lies”. He described jews as piglets suckling from their mother pig, israel, and blamed jews for pretty much everything he viewed as wrong in society. He was basically the predocessor to Hitler and Marx. And one might actually say Marx was an additional predocessor to Hitler. I sure would posot that as likely, even if by proxy of Hitler being influenced by left socialists. I mean, he literally modified the marxist “'class struggle” into his own version of “the struggle”, “MY Struggle/Mein Kampf”. Which brings us to out next german collectivist philosopher. If youre picking up the theme im putting down.

Third subject, Hitler. Self explanatory. Jew-hating anti-egalitarian ethno socialist. Obviously fits in with the last two subject entries. BTW,I have a larger point to all this random pattern listing. One more.

Slightly diverging from hatred of jews, and more toward the begining of postmodernist thought, Max Horkheimer who said freedom and justice are incompatible opposites, and argued everything are oppressive social constructs, every letter and word and phrase and interaction. He said there is no way to know what a just society is, but that we can complain and struggle against the things we dont like and dont find just. And so if you also consider he in the same sitting said freedom and justice are opposites, and this was while summarizing his academic ideas to an interviewer, we can deduce he was directly opposed to freedom, despite considering himself anti-authoritarian…. Anyways, he was bonkers, hope you dont live near Frankfurt, theyre bonkers around them parts, and i know someone who has told me firsthand just how horkheimer style bonkers that town is.

{Honorary mentions. The Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albert. Although there was clearly nuance here, Prussia WAS part of the German Empire, but the german youth injunction/sinker was still set in him, to which collectivism was his driver/floatation. He was a nationalist and refused advisors compelling him into an anti-left policy. Honorary mention 2. Antifasciste Aktion, the communist vanguard formed by the german communist party, the KPD, formed to forght fire with fire, using brownshirt tactics against the brownshirts (to whom they lost).}

All four, all German. All of them. 5 if we include the Kaiser. The father of protestantism, the father of communism, the left reformer whos students sparked the “New Left” movement, and Hitler, HITLER. ALL GERMAN. Which is not an implicit racial claim im implying, but one about a sour philosophy. I refer to this as German Collectivism. It is the archetype if collectivism which germany seems particularly possessed by. These have ravaged the whole world, toppled entire nations and enslaved likely over two billion people considering just the PRC, USSR, and Nazi Germany esp with its labir camps. Luther could be viewed as the origin, certainly the origin of modern german collectivism (protestantism & lutherean conspiracy theory, left socialism, and nazism), but the purpose of germany has not changed through any of its past or present phases. It’s purpose seems to be unintentionally destroying itself in the process of intentionally trying to destroy the rest of Europe in attempt to conquer Europe and/or the world. Maybe it came from its clash with Rome, and it never left that modality of picking away at its neighbors. I guess the ritual is that the story always starts off with a cheating boyfriend lol! Heroine in this one and I guess the rest of her friends are all rich though. Rich people problems now? Well, that was creative… Using a planner to keep track of when he’s meeting what girls and then him actually having a twin to swap places with all the time on dates etc, and they’re using the heroine as the mould for an android girl they want to build? Yep, she sure found a wonderful cheating boyfriend. And so for the sake of the future of her family company, she’s gotta marry a rich guy they can do business with and her time limit is by graduation to find one that’s suitable for her, otherwise she’ll have to marry this cheating boyfriend that has a twin, I can feel how desperate she must be feeling already…

1st Liar HAHAHA, what is a professional virgin??? Textbook knowledge with no experience I guess?? Maan, they stole her bra? There’s an underwear thief going around? Yeah… That’s not fun. Anyway, Nagi seems like a nice guy, lolll when he joked to the heroine to feed him. Hahahaha the king game is the best, it’s a common game you see in Japanese media where everyone has a numbered stick except one person who has the king stick and they can order whatever number to do something to another number or to the king e.g. when the heroine asked Shunya (number whatever) to flick the forehead of Anko (number whatever). You don’t know who is what number so it can be pretty romantic or cute, or funny such as when Koh (Yu) asked number two to kiss him on the cheek (since he’s king) thinking that it’s one of the girls but it’s actually Shunya hahaha.

Omggg when Shunya said ‘I love you’ to the heroine as part of the game but then privately messages her and says that he was serious when he said that, and then even looks away blushing after she looks at him once she’s read it. I was wondering what the problem would be this time around, guess there’s someone in the group that likes to upload videos, and they uploaded the whole mixer party online and even had shots of the heroine’s panties when she stumbled because she was a bit drunk🤨 This person is very…🤨 But lol, oh yeah, Shunya was the one that always knows what’s on the tests, yeah I remember thinking he was dodgy for sure because of that, didn’t think he would hack the security camera to get this footage to upload though lol. And his “reasons” for starting to do all this was silly zzz.

3rd Liar Hmmmm, so this one is kinda about which rumour about which person is actually true? Not really buying the one about the gay guy, but I’m pretty sceptical about Akari after she gave the heroine the wrong time for the shoot and took her spot, it was the heroine’s fault for not having her planner and not knowing the time but stilllll, she does seem to hang with guys a lot and act suspiciously. Sounds like a long stretch for Mio to be having an affair, seems more like she’s buying stuff for her dad that she doesn’t see much or something.

Yay I’m right! Like, seriously, who bothers to type 15:00, totally a liar, totally meant the 5:00 so that the heroine would be late. But wow, she’s been stealing boyfriends, stealing jobs and sleeping with all these guys in the entertainment circle making it seem as if she’s their girlfriend but she’s really not😶 and now it’s biting back at her because the guys she’s been playing with are friends that regularly hang out together! This is why you shouldn’t play around with guys so close to you and could be friends lol. I guess reading the True end is better than the secret end for SS?🤔 Akari sleeps with so many men because she seeks the validation she can’t get from her father from them since her dad will never praise her and will always disapprove of her modelling and her appearance when she should be working hard like her capable brother that’s in the police force, but really, even though she works hard, her dad doesn’t see it or really care, so it’s pretty saddening. Doesn’t give her the right to play with the guys like she’s serious though, she should be open with the fact that she’s playing lol. Anywho, her problem, her life, still despicable to steal jobs, especially from friends, like wth, don’t buy or care about her story.

4th Liar Lol at the heroine meeting all the guys coincidentally and they’re all interning at Media Act (the setting in Office Deception). Right now tbh, Shotaro and Kaname are pretty unappealing so I don’t really have anything to say about them. Nagi seems cool but that’s all too. Tbh, I’m kinda hoping all the guys are a dud, she gets a best friend at the end and then marries her butler Haru🤣 I feel like he’s the only one she has a genuine bond with, the rest are so superficial lol. Hmmmm maybe Haru is secretly a rich boy! That would be nice, they were so cute eating the birthday cake together and talking about her internship. She needs to dump all those other guys and get with himmmm!

How scary for the heroine though. Accidentally stumbling upon illegal deals for guns at a party that you thought was just some fun😶 I find it so hard to take any of the guys seriously when they just all randomly confess like that though lol. Anddd it’s Kaname! Tbh, I don’t remember anything about this guy besides him being in the same club as the heroine lol. His True End on how he initially traded things his explorer brother brought back and then it becoming a big thing with him eventually going deeper and holding parties and then letting them get out of control because he thinks he’s “helping people out” by doing these people favours for them to trade there. Yeah, no. I have no idea how the son of a top attorney could be so silly and think so naively when it comes to illegal stuff that probably ends up killing people. It’s ridiculous. Outrageous. No sympathy, do not care, would call police on their parties but too scared that I’d get killed lmao.

5th Liar Hmmmm I think that a big problem that I have with this story is that for each liar, I don’t really know what the story is going along to and what is the problem with the “liar” until like the last two chapters before the accusation part where the heroine suddenly finds out some random problem, and right when she discovers the problem, she discovers the culprit too! It’s just so…bad in terms of how the story flows imo. Anyway, the story isn’t particularly interesting either too, since as usual, another guy confesses, she travels around Kyoto and then they realise someone has been posting her photos and details of her and her trip on a blog as if it’s her blogging.

After looking at the blog posts, it’s obvious that it’s Senri, he’s the only one that knows that the handkerchief is a Chinese peony specifically and not a tree peony. Sigh, I liked him the most out of the three personally. Well, Anko is cute I guess lol, but sigh, Senri, why are you a disappointment? Yeah that was creepy, Senri, your true ending just made me even more uhhh wth lol. I thought these true endings were supposed to make me sympathise with them but it just makes me even more disgusted with them lol. So creepy of of him to make a blog about her and all the things she does “out of love”, like dude, that ain’t love, you’re just obsessed and infatuated with her, you don’t even know her, you haven’t even talked to her since she was 8 like whaaaat. Not gonna feel sorry for you even if you cry, Senri. Totally disappointed in him. Anyway, at this rate, I don’t like any of the guys so I hope one of the girls is the one lol.

6th Liar Toru and Azusa are brothers?? Well, he sounds dodgy already. Uhhh Nagi knew that the water bottle had lotion without opening it? Can all the good looking ones stop disappointing meeeee!? I don’t like Sosuke or Shotaro either but I thought Nagi looked pretty good, sighhhhh. Why be a kinky fetishist and kidnap the heroine for, sighhhhh. Lol, I honestly feel like these stories and reasons are getting even more shallow as the story goes on, it’s just so…basic? Like, Nagi just found out he’s a masochist when his girlfriend slapped him when she wanted to break up, and then now he’s like this, it’s like uhh okay? What did the heroine do to make him so into her? Okaaay. Well, I guess it’s good that the heroine is open to reporter jobs as well, wasn’t sure why she was so keen on the magazine editor job specifically when her reasons for wanting it weren’t something only that job provided, but whatever.

7th Liar Right now, I don’t think I’ll be surprised at whoever is the traitor friend. I feel like it’s Anko just because she feels so fake? She’s way too sweet and nice that it’s impossible for her to be real! Mio’s cool so I want her to be the best friend🤣 Honestly not sure how safe it is for the heroine and them to pick mushrooms in the forest when they’re complete newbies relying on the web to see if these mushrooms are edible or not like hmmmm… That doesn’t sound very safe at all!

Hahahah, I’m sorry Anko, you were the genuine good friend LOL. I’m pretty sure Mio cut her finger on purpose just to interrupt the heroine’s conversation with Shotaro. Aaaand she did, no idea why Mio is like this but geez~ Lol, awesome, she loves the heroine and is obsessed with her to the point that she is willing to die together with her, yay, what a wonderful best friend. I don’t get why if the one she likes is the heroine, why would she get the heroine lost in the mountains by herself in the snow and force her to take cover in a cave???? Like, what if she slipped or got so lost she couldn’t find it and died? I am so confused and weirded out. As expected, Mio is so obsessed with her because she was the first person she met that didn’t act fake and genuinely wanted to be friends with her and liked hanging with her, she’s still weirdly obsessed for no reason though.

8th Liar Rental boyfriend?! Aren’t they all rich?? Why do they need to be a rental boyfriend??? I guess they might be disowned or something? Shotaro seems so suspicious though lol, with all the women’s clothing, earrings and credit card bills etc in his “house”, hard to not doubt him tbh. Although Sosuke with two toothbrushes in one cup is kinda hmmmm… I feel like it has to be Sosuke, he probably bought all that food he said he cooked (like why was it so expensive when she paid for half?!), and having perfume and toothbrushes just seems way too dodgy. Well, my gut feeling was right even if my reasons to choose him were not hahaha! So, he’s poor and ridden with debt from his father, and his mother got sick from raising him and his siblings, so even though her condition is better now, he hopes to get a good job or marry into money so his family won’t need to suffer anymore. That’s logical. I don’t blame Sosuke for trying to lie his way through to get the heroine for that reason, doesn’t change the fact that it’s something he shouldn’t have done since he’s blatantly lying to get her money, but it just shows how desperate he is I guess, considering how tough it must be to take care of siblings, work and feed everyone :( But yeah, anyway, still don’t like Shotaro and still think he’s dodgy and hope he is, so that the heroine can go with Haruki!🤣

9th Liar Uh, what? The heroine is going to be betrayed by someone she trusts and even though there should only be two liars left to pick from, they decided to add another two, with one being Haruki? Zzzz. I don’t know but I don’t like this format, it’s like suddenly introducing another two characters that I should be suddenly considering as a part of the liar story. It’s like dude, I barely remember this Professor Mori, why is she suddenly a liar candidate, at this point in the story, I’m not gonna feel anything even if she betrays the heroine😪 Only Haru is the one that consistently appears enough in the background for you to care if he actually betrays the heroine tbh, just because I feel like Shotaro and Anko are such superficial characters that lack personality, and I much prefer and enjoy the little things the heroine and Haru share every now and then with them talking so unreservedly with each other etc.

Well, considering the suspicious calls Haruki has made throughout the story and the only one you’d care about betraying the heroine at this point, it’s most likely him. I really want it to be Shotaro, but if we take the fortune teller guy’s words to be the truth with Anko being her best friend and Shotaro being the guy she’s destined with, then really it only leaves Haru and the professor. And yeah, the professor is such a side character that I doubt it’s her. Sigh, Haru, it’s like one disappointment after another for me throughout this story lol. Reading the true ending for Haru was tough, he’s had a pretty unfortunate childhood. He initially had a nice family with a younger sister and they all loved his piano playing, but then his parents passed away, he got shafted to relatives that used his piano skills to earn money, his sister fell ill and passed away too, and then he somehow got picked up by the heroine’s dad to take care of the heroine, and by staying beside her, he got to experience all those emotions he had lost. So it’s pretty saddening that they made him one of the “liars”.

I’m quite dissatisfied with Scheming Socialites tbh, the story, the reasons for lying, the personalities for the characters, everything felt rather forced and done in quite a mundane way. Also doesn’t help that Shotaro has such a cookie cutter personality that they try to make redeeming in the end by having the same interest as the heroine, but really, it’s so superficial. I honestly only really liked Liar Uncover the Truth. Office Deception and Scheming Socialites just didn’t have the same spark and didn’t have particularly interesting liars, and their reasons were so uncreative compared to the first, oh and I totally didn’t care for them at all, at least for the first series, I felt some sort of emotions towards each liar but for the latter series, I just seriously couldn’t care for them and just felt that they were ridiculous instead. I’m not even mad at any of the liars because I feel nothing for them, yeah it’s that terrible lol. So yeah, I would only recommend playing the first series and Itaru’s Lovers Route to feel complete haha.

“It’s Terminator!”

“It's Terminator 2,” Noble mutters, glancing overhead at the oversized television screen in the corner of the bar.

When Noble -- who is strictly Nick tonight -- told me we were bound for a bachelor party, sitting with four other guys in a mundane sports bar playing pub trivia is not what I expected, especially considering Noble's usual knack for finding trouble. But it was entertaining enough and I wasn't exactly interested in waiting in a long line outside some insufferable club.

As he draws out the last word of the question like a typical radio announcer, the opening of Santeria by Sublime settles over the bar.

I tilt over to Noble. “It's Mike Tyson.”

His pen stalls as he lifts his gaze to me. “It's Muhammad Ali.”

I reach over and pull the pen from his hand before I lean in to write what I know is the correct answer on the small piece of paper.

“Dude,” he calls out, dismayed with hands spread as I push my chair back.

I glance back at him over my shoulder with a smirk. “I'm right.”

“You better be right, Jamie,” Sebastian scoffs as he turns to survey the bar. “Because I'm about to forfeit and order some shots.”

“Shots are a good idea either way,” Noble decides.

When I return, I don't miss the chance to lay a firm hand on his shoulder and I give it a rough squeeze.

He clears his throat and adjusts in his chair. “Are we winning?”

“No.” I chuckle, settling in beside him. “But I know my boxing titles.”

“Well I know Schwarzenegger movies,” he announces to the table, pointing his beer bottle at Andrew before he intentionally gets louder -- “but nobody listens to me!”

Half the tables in the bar cheer for themselves while I tilt my head to give Noble a look.

He spreads his hands to answer to it. “I doubted you. What was I thinking?”

“You should never.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Oh hey, was the answer six Jägerbombs?” Sebastian declares returning to the table with a bartender close behind to help carry the tray of glasses. “Because now it is. Forget the game.”

I know I grimace a little as the cocktail server sets the highball glasses in front of us. “Oh damn, seriously?”

“Are you…” Noble starts, lifting a shiny gaze to the waitress. “Legally allowed to serve us these? I'm like, ten years over the acceptable age limit for drinking Jägerbombs.”

The rest of the table claps their amusement. “You sure it wasn’t Terminator 2?” Andrew teases.

“It wasn’t,” Noble laughs. “But I like sequels apparently.”

“That is hilarious,” the waitress approves. “I love it. And you're definitely too old to be ordering Jägerbombs.”

“Who was it?” I question.

“Who was who?”

“The date. Do you remember?”

“Ahh.” He smiles down at the table, his shoulders shifting a little with a bouncy chuckle before he answers. “Lisa Palermo.”

Everyone at the table hollers and entertained cackle. “Lisa Palermo!” Andrew proclaims as if he knows her, then he picks up his shot glass. “Let's cheers to Lisa Palermo.”

“What the fuck?” Noble laughs. “No, dude this night's about you. We have to toast you.”

“No,” Andrew dismisses it. “It's not like this is going to be our last shot of the night.”

“What happened to Lisa Palermo?” Sebastian cuts in. “We should call her.”

I sputter another hard laugh and slap my palm on the table. “Yeah dude, was Mighty Ducks 2 just the beginning?”

“Um, she had her friend dump me at the ice skating rink at Central Park but thanks for making me remember that pain, Jamie.”

The whole thing is cracking me up and I'm just thankful I don't have to keep a straight face around him, especially when he nudges me in the arm with his own.

“Alright. To Lisa!” Andrew calls out, raising his glass and prompting everyone else to do the same. “And Nick, her biggest regret.”

We all let go of the shot, dropping the Jägermeister into the highball glass of fizzy Red Bull. I down mine, swallowing hard before I clear away the lingering spicy sweetness in my throat. “Good god, that was a flashback.”

NAZIS RAUS! We say NO to the neonazi festival!

On 20-21 April „Neißeblick” hotel in Ostritz (small Saxon town near the Polish border village Krzewina) is going to host a neonazi festival „Schild & Schwert” (Shield & Sword, SS for short) which is organized under the motto „Reconquista Europa”. A couple of thousands of neonazis from Germany and other European countries, mostly from Poland and Czechia, are expected to come. 

The date and the venue are not accidental - 20st April is Adolf Hitler’s date of birth and the choice of a small town means that no interference from the outside and no serious obstacles are to be faced. The aim is to cut off the town and fill it with thousands of neonazis, which will result in creating a temporary safe zone for Hitler’s fans. The organizers assume that large numbers of attendants will block or considerably limit any kind of protest or resistance. If this assumption proves correct, NPD, a neonazi extreme far-right German political party, is planning to regularly come back to Ostritz – Thorten Heise, the organizer of “Schild & Schwert”, has already registered another event in the town which is going to take place in October this year.

Sascha Elser from the Initiative “Rechts rockt nicht” notes: “It is obvious that they want this land back”. Apparently, it does not keep Polish neonazis from coming to the festival. Moreover, they resigned form organizing their own celebration of Hitler’s birthday called “Noc Tożsamości” (The Night of Identity) and officially invite to come to Ostritz. They do not seem to be bothered even by the fact that Michael Regener, the vocalist of the Lunikoff Verschwörung band who is going to play at SS and a notorious convict of spreading hatred in Germany, used to sing in other neonazi band called Landster which was famous for its song “Polacken Tango” and its lyrics:“Polish louts scream white power! Oh how I hate this shit nation. Since when do Polacks belong to aryan race?”

Not a problem for Polish nationalists, it seems. Actually, on the contrary. They plan to come and help organizing the festival, also offer accommodation in the nearby area on the Polish side of the border. The official SS festival website says that it is recommended to come to Krzewina by train, do some cheap shopping in Polish shops and then travel on foot. But it is not only Polish neonazis who support and help in organization of “Shield and Sword”. Both Polish and German police join forces in order to protect this “political assembly” and prevent possible riots. This basically means official state protection for the fascists so that nothing can spoil their party. Sascha Elser presents the point of view of “Rechts rockt nicht”: “In our opinion the festival in Ostritz will be a chance for German neonazis to tighten their cooperation and develop and strengthen relations with similar groups in Poland and Czechia. Also, it will be a great opportunity to collect funds for their activities. All this with police protection from Polish and German joint forces. If this is really to happen, that you can gather and celebrate Hitler’s birthday without any problems or consequences, it is a clear sign that our law and society is sick”. 

We will not stand and watch when neonazis from Germany and the rest of Europe come for a party to celebrate Fuhrer’s birthday. For us the dialogue ends where national socialism, homophobia, antisemitism, racism and misogyny start. We will support the residents of Ostritz.

We will stand together and resist them!We must all go to Krzewina on 21st April and demonstrate against neonazism.

Organize yourselves, organize transport, let’s be there together! Let’s throw a colourful fiesta on the border in support of tolerance, mutual respect and solidarity! They will not even conquer the small town of Ostritz. They are not welcome here and they will not spend happy time here.
