A lot of you requested SpUk yesterday, and I’ve been meaning to draw something for them,,, so here’s a small snippet from an au where the two of them get stranded and they have to make their way back… together 😳

some engspa headcanons i've collected over the last decade and a bit (because i am once again in a nostalgic mood for these two specifically):

when arthur spends a lot of time around antonio he starts to struggle with english, integrating in middle and early-modern pronunciation. because of this, he tries not to speak english around him.

when things become too intense or difficult for them to talk about, they swap into latin; they find it grounding, since it was the first language they ever communicated in.

they had both been excited for their first marriage in 1170; they had both been young and in love. they gradually became cold and cruel towards each other as time went on.

they made a tentative agreement in the modern era to only meet around other people, preferably in places that look modern because they are both prone to "fits of nostalgia"*. (*start to reminisce which inevitably leads to them losing their tempers and beating the hell into each other, which isn't good for their re-brandings as a gentleman or easy-going guy respectively).

against all logic, they are the person the other goes to in a personal crisis or emotional breakdown. more than once they have shown up at each other’s doors drunk and worn down. (arthur has drunkenly claimed it's because antonio is 'the only one who he can trust...' the pause was a little too long before he added '...to pretend it never happened afterwards'.)

arthur frequently holidays in spain and is often drunk and rowdy while there, which antonio thinks is incredibly rude. arthur genuinely loves it there. he would move there if he could.

antonio will call arthur to taunt him every football match he beats him, even if the games are friendlies.

to this day they know how the other takes their drinks. they will occasionally make them for each other at world meetings. little peace offerings they don't talk about.

antonio has teeth marks on his crucifix that he blames arthur for, but he'll never admitting they came from biting onto it to stop himself lashing out at the other during a meeting once.

engspa but it’s a tragic, doomed, prelude-that-haunts-the-narrative summer affair in the dusty olive groves of Andalusia, between the only son of a wealthy landowner and a disillusioned former soldier seeking to find himself after fighting in the international brigade during the Spanish Civil War. Blah blah catholic guilt and feelings left unsaid. Arthur leaves Antonio to get rid of the love that is destroying his life, ends up destroying himself even more.
