Dean still sleeps with his hand hanging over the couch. Even when Sam isn't even in the same state as him (to Dean's knowledge).

Still holding his arm out incase Sam needs it in the middle of the night like he did throughout his childhood. Just goes to show protective older brother mode never leaves.

I totally believe the reason why we didn't see Castiel in episode 11 season 14 "Damaged Good" is Homophobia. Like I'm sorry but Dean's plan of locking himself in the Ma'lak box would've totally been compromised by Cas' gay ass

Dean already said he loves Cas. He listed him among people he loves in 14x11 Damaged Goods.

Dean: "Sam, you've tried, Cas has tried. Jack... And I love you for trying"

the winchester surprise story is such a good example of how to write something truly devastating. Because it's not just that their father was emotionally abusive and neglectful, or that it's because Mary died, and Mary's sitting right there listening to the story, so much of what makes it so heartbreaking is that that Dean is telling it as a funny story before he even realises how fucked up of a story it is to be telling his mom as a funny anecdote.

14.11 Dean goes to see his mom amd craft a suicide plan

14.12 Dean grapples with his plan while his family tries to stop him. in the last minute he breaks down saying that he doesn't want to die but still belives himself to better off dead. episode ends with tears and the words "lets go home." i am emotionaly devestated

Cas is different; he is a major reason Dean got "shaky" on his coffin plan

Rereading 14x11 and 14x12 this morning, and I'm struck by how much Dean's farewell behavior concerning Cas is so different than other family members.

It's in part because Cas functions as protector, whether Dean accepts that dynamic at this point or not. But it's striking that Dean's not just afraid of getting emotional, he's nervous about Cas's pull. He knows seeing Cas (and Jack) specifically could ruin his resolve:

It's certainly a family effort to support Dean enough not to check out of life in the Ma'lak box, but Cas is an unspoken cornerstone that not even Sam understands the magnitude of. (That Dean admitted it even for a second is unusual.)

Later, in 14x14, Dean is still working on Cas about the coffin plan. He's effectively appealing to Cas to let him die, and he's still keeping Jack in the dark. It's as if Cas is a major barrier he has to clear, which has implications for the uncomfortable underlying tensions in 14 & 15.

If it becomes primarily Cas's "fault" that Dean got emotional and stayed, instead of throwing himself into the ocean, then the fact that Michael got out, killed the AU hunters, destroyed Jack's soul, damaged Rowena, etc. etc.--well.

Dean's feelings for Cas (whether you view them romantically or in a faith-based manner) are a BIG part of what "went wrong" here. Without the allure of faith, everyone (sans Dean ofc) would be alive and healthy. That hope and spark Cas provided when healing Donatello--that miracle--was just a narrative trap that tipped the scales too far in the direction of stupid, doomed hope.

What if Nick had kidnapped Mary before she'd gone into Donna's workshop and saw the Ma'lak box in Damaged Goods?

What might have happened if Dean had managed to go through with his trip to the bottom of the Pacific without telling Sam.

Dean: "Well, maybe you need to learn, okay? ‘Cause when people are past the point of saving, maybe you need to learn to walk away."

Well, Dean,

You just outed a bit of your stupid "I'll save the world on my own" plan to an already suspicious Sam

Like either of you are capable of just walking away from someone that. Why do you think Cas so eloquently put it as "They may find more wayward orphans along the way.....Pardon me for highlighting their crippling and dangerous empathetic response with 'sarcasm'" in 6x19. They can't just leave things like that alone. It's not what Sam and Dean do.

If you can't even do that to each other, then what makes you think that either of you can do it to other people? Especially Sam, the more emotionally aware out of the two of you.

Also, it's like, you've both tried this speech on each other at least once before in a previous season and look how well that turned out.

If you couldn't tell from my last two posts as well as this one, I just finished watching 14x11 for the first time and had thoughts.

So not only is there the usual weirdness, Sam up late in the bunker library researching a way to save his brother, obviously exhausted but determined, but then Dean says he wants to go for a drive to visit Mary... alone. And it gets weirder, the lingering shots of Dean's uncertainty in telling Sam he wants to do something without him, Sam's clear discomfort but support of whatever Dean needs, Dean's reaction to that like he knew it would be that way but was bracing for (maybe hoping for) pushback from Sam instead??? And then this hug...

Dean doesn't hug Sam goodbye when he's just going out for a drive, even if it means he'll be gone for a few days. Hugs are for "I thought you were dead" or "I may never see you again" moments so Sam knows what this is, he just doesn't know why.

And then while Dean is talking with Donna, when she finally gets to ask him about how he is doing, the bell ringing in the background is a fucking nice, subtle touch, very "for whom the bells tolls."

Again, Dean thinks he's playing things close to the vest, but he walks around holding his emotions right out in front of him all the time.

Mary: Awesome. You know, if you wanted to make it a full reunion, we could call Sam over. Dean: Yeah, you know, I was thinking I’d actually be a little greedy with my Mom time, if that’s cool. Mary: Well, I just thought, you know, if you’re staying a few nights… Dean: [quickly] I don’t want Sam here.

Mary telling Sam to give her some time to talk with Dean, meanwhile Sam is already on his way, regardless.

"Everybody keeps asking me how I am, and how I am is I don't want to talk about it. Please."

Sam: But there has to be another way. Dean: There’s not, okay? There – Sam you’ve tried. Cas has tried. Jack… And I love you for trying. [cut to Sam looking at Dean for 2 seconds like this...]

Dean: But none of it’s gonna work.

"You were gonna leave, and you weren’t even gonna tell me. Me."

Y'all, this is kicking my ass. I'm going to start crying. These two!!! I swear!

"Sam, you’re the last person I could tell, the last person I could be around, ‘cause you’re the only one that could’ve talked me out of it."

Sam: alright.
