Chapter 2

......

As the gems made their way inside the building, Spinel took note on how gorgeous it is! The color scheme were based off of various shades of golds and reds. Spinel magenta eyes explored the interior awing at the high ceiling. The venue has three levels hosting rows of hundreds of red cushion seats. The room is lit up with soft lighting, giving the atmosphere an air of sophistication. Spinel admired the beauty of the structure adoring minor details and the curves on the walls. However, the showstopper was the stage; it was enormous! The thick red velvet curtains are closed concealing what’s behind it and slowly Spinel could feel the excitement grow inside waiting to find out!

The Crystal Gems and Spinel sat at the front row of the venue; the seats were a good distance away from the stage so they all may be able to enjoy the performances comfortably. Spinel fiddles with the cuffs of her gloves as she sat quietly in her seat as the other gems talks amongst themselves. Spinel sighs as she sinks further down her seat, she wanted to join in on the fun, but she did not have anything interesting to say. Therefore, she sat put waiting for the show to start. The lights soon flicker signaling the audience the show is about to start. Once the lights went out the curtains began to rise.

The audience clapped loudly as four magnificent shows were put on for them. Two being short musicals numbers and two dance routines. Spinel was very impressed by the gems skills in vocals and style of dances. She was honestly a fan of the hip-hop genre. The pink gem was over in the moon with excitement. She took in all the colors and sounds in and it created such a wonderful experience for her senses! She has never been to anything like this and it was so much fun. The shy gem even started a  conversation with Amethyst, the short purple gem bragged about how she is one of the hip-hop and freestyle teachers with Garnet while Pearl taught ballet whenever they had the time. Spinel was mind blown that humans were able to learn such difficult choreography. This got her mind wondering if they would willing to let her teach a swing class?  The short admission break was over as the last performance was about to begin.

“This one is going to be amazing! Well, they were all amazing but (Y/N) is in this one!” Steven gushes to Spinel as she got comfortable in her seat ready to be dazzled. Soft music began to play as the curtain slowly rises up. There was a chorus of ‘awes’ as the red velvet drapes revealed what was behind and it was breathtaking. Spinel eyes gloss over in awestruck as she took in the sight before her. On the stage was varies of gems of every size and color adored in silk shimmery dress similar to White Diamonds. On their heads are delicate gold wire crowns decorated with crystals. The minerals caught the bright stage lights and reflected like stars.  The background and props were large crystals in the soft blue and purple color range. Then a soft voice began to sing, a spotlight flashes down onto a (B/S) (Y/G). Holey Moley! Spinel was stunned by the appearance of the gem as she stood tall on her pedestal surrounded by her fellow gems, her piercing (E/C) shined under the lights making her look like powerful deity. Who is she?

“That’s her! That’s (Y/N).” Steven Whispers to Spinel pointing the deity. The pink gem was shaken out of her trance as the bass of the music rattled the venue and (Y/N) began to sing.

The gems on the stage began to dance in sync to the beat of the music. Their limbs moved ever so elegantly and their facial expression shows determination as they all moved as a singular unit.  Though the dancers were putting up quite the performance, Spinel’s eyes were glued onto the singer as she stood tall in the masses of gems. She was able to stand out amongst them with her unique form as she too moves so delicately to her own singing. She….she’s amazing, talented, ENCHANTING! The singer was making her skin tickle with excitement as she felt her chest like it was tightening with every breath she took.

A strange sensation coursed through Spinel as she heard the (Y/G) belt out such a high note so effortlessly. Oh stars. Spinel couldn’t look away not even for a second as she watched her dance; the red in her face brighten with every roll of (Y/N) hips. The slits on her dress seem to get higher as more of her thighs are exposed and her skin gleamed under the lights. The choreography was sensual with suggestive undertone; at one point, the ladies got on their knees and rolled their backs down leaving their butt in the air for a hot second before dropping their hips onto the stage, then getting back on their knees to caress one another wherever their hands desired. Spinel rolled in her lips; she could not deny that her eyes have lingered on (Y/N)  backside longer than they should have. Can you blame her?! It’s so round!

The backup singers supported the lead gorgeously, but she really did not need them seeing she was able to support herself. Spinel placed her hands on her warm gem feeling her chest swell, new feelings taking place in the emptiness that was once there.  She nips at her lower lip as she watched the performance hitting its climax. A few gems fused which made the audience thrilled, but Spinel did not care. Her eyes are trained onto the (Y/G) singing her heart out; the (Y/G) was doing riffs and runs she never heard before hitting higher notes than before. Goodness, it gave the spinel chills. 

Spinel was completely entranced by the tiny gem, she had not noticed Amethyst smirking beside her. The purple gem softly elbows Garnet and pointed to the pink gem. The fusion glanced over at her to see the Spinel gawking the singer, eyes following her every move. A smile graces her lips as she looked back at the show. How cute. Amethyst reached behind Spinel and tapped Steven on the shoulder. The teen peeked over at her to see her pointing at Spinel. Steven peeked over at the gem and noticed her starry eyes gazing at (Y/N) with bright magenta cheeks. Oh. My. Goodness! The boy couldn’t fight back the smile as his eyes shine just as bright; Spinel and (Y/N)!? He had to make it happen!

At the end of the performance, a large green Jasper had placed (Y/N) on their shoulders as she ends the song chorusing with her team. The (Y/G) adjusted her stare from the audience to Spinel and sent her wink. What the? And just like that, the curtains dropped. Everyone in the audience stood on their feet as cheers and applause filled the venue. Spinel, on the other hand, was still star-struck and in the midst of freaking out. Was that wink for…her? No. But she was looking right at her! Spinel sat still, stuck in her seat unblinking.

“Hey close your mouth you’re getting drool everywhere!” Amethyst says teasingly jerking the toony gem out her trance. Spinel snapped back into reality as she sat up in the chair shifting her confused gaze at her short friend.

“Wha?” Was she could mustard up sending Amethyst into a cackling fit, she couldn’t help it!. Spinel look like a lost puppy with her large uncertain eyes. There is no way she wasn’t going to tease her!

“Oh dudes! Someone is in loooove!” she says loudly. This caught the attention of the others as they now watched the two vibrant gems go at it.  Spinel’s cheeks flares back up as at her words before snapping back. The venue was slowly growing empty as the crowd exited leaving the Crystal Gems to their shenanigans.

“What?! I’m not in love!” Spinel argues only making Amethyst smirk as she crosses her arms.

“Riiiigght.” She then shapeshifts into (Y/G) making Spinel gasp, her chest tightens as she places her hands over her mouth. She was speechless. Even though she knew it was not really her, she couldn’t help but freeze up. Then Amethyst laughter ruined the illusion making Spinel huff in irritation.

“I’m not!” She mutters as she slouches further back into her seat childishly, the rest of the Crystal Gems laughed softly at the two. Leave it to Amethyst to get the shy gem out her shell. Steven gave the pink gem a soft smile as he places a hand on the sulking gem shoulders.

“Would you like to meet her?” he offered making her face light up again. Meet her? Seriously?! Just the thought of it made her wanna puke in nervousness. 

“W-wha-“ But before she could finish her sentence an excited voice called out to them.

“HEY GUYS!” And in a flash, the gem that was making Spinel feel nauseous  popped up. She hugged the members of the Crystal Gems happily, as they each praised her for her performance.

“Thank you so much for coming!  It means so much you all make time to come out and see me!” she beams, her eyes drifting over to Spinel every so often. Steven waves it off as he offers her the kindest smile.

“Anytime (Y/N)! What are friends for! And speaking of friends, (Y/N), this is Spinel she just came to Earth today.” He introduced, Spinel nervously stood beside the human boy as she waves shyly at the small gem.

“H-how do you do?” Spinel greets quietly. (Y/N) smiles brightly at her; oh goodness Spinel could collapse right now. It was too pure.

“It’s nice to meet you Spinel!” she says reaching out a hand to the pink gem. Spinel reached out and shook her hand. They were so small! The nervous gem clears her throat as she drops (Y/N) hand and rubs the back of her neck anxiously. The rest of their peers just watched on, some giddy and some in pain from the awkward energy Spinel put off.

“Uh, t-that was q-quite the performance, you have a b-beautiful voice.” Spinel compliments, she could feel her cheeks still burning red. 

“Thank you! I’m glad you liked it!” (Y/N) chirps bashfully as she glances at Spinel with wide eyes, the (Y/G) couldn’t help but find Spinel  absolutely adorable! There were a few times she had to check herself during her performance, getting completely distracted by her staring, it was sweet.  

“(Y/N!) We need to get ready for the next performance!” A Ruby called out, (Y/N) glances over her shoulders and responded with “I’m coming”, before looking back at her friends, but her eyes shifted back to Spinel.

“I hope to see you around sometime? You can stop by my studio anytime if you like?” she asked hopefully, cheeks glowing. Spinel choked up completely off guard by the question. She wanted to see her? Again? The pink gem felt like her brain was being fried as she tried to make sense of it. Why would this stunning being want to see her!? Spinel was so lost in her self-deprecating thought she forgot to answer, making (Y/N) deflate a bit. Steven went into panic mode as he realized Spinel was frozen in place, so he did what he does best and saved the day.

“Definitely. We’ll stop by tomorrow!” He says as he wraps his arms around a stun Spinel. (Y/N) smiles, relieved to finally have an answer, even though it was not from the gem herself.

“Ok, stop by around 1! See you guys tomorrow, bye Spinel.” (Y/N) turned around and floated over to her friends who were waiting for her on the stage and she disappeared behind the curtain. God she looked so beautiful as she floated away.  

“Wha…what just happened?” Spinel asked in disbelief at the whole exchange.

“Looks like you got yourself a hot date!” Amethyst cheers excitedly for her friend. 

“Well it’s not a date if Steven is going.” Pearl chimes as she stood beside the shorter gem. Date….? DATE!?

“WHA?! Date why would someone like HER wanna go on a date with ME?” Spinel asks frantically to Steven who only chuckled.

“Good question.” Peridot comments bluntly receiving a few scowls from Bismuth and Lapis.

“Peri.” They both chorused sternly. The green gem rises her arms up in defense as she looks over at her team.

“What? It’s a valid question! It doesn’t  make any sense!” She exclaims defending herself, she knew what she said! Spinel nods in agreement as she loops her arms to stretched over to Peridot and points at her.

“The Dorito is right! It doesn’t make sense! Doesn’t she know who I am? Doesn’t she know what I’ve done to the Earth!?” Panic coats Spinel’s words as she looks at Steven for answers. Her eyes wide with fear as she practically shook in place.  

“Dorito?” Peri mutters under her breath. Steven places his hands on her shoulders and stares back into her tired orbs. Though he recommended Spinel to start sleeping to slow down her mind, the bags under eyes says she hasn’t had enough of it. 

“Spinel you need to take a deep breath and calm down. I think (Y/N) might like you too.” He reassures, Spinel scoffs as she looks away from the boy.

“How would you know?” she mutters feeling the weight of doubt on her shoulders.

“Look behind you and see for yourself.” Garnets soothing voice spoke. Spinel and the Crystal Gems looked behind them to the stage to see (Y/N), an orange Amber and purple Pearl peeking at the group from the slit of the curtains. Once Spinel made eye contact with (Y/N), her eyes widen as she closed her part of the drapes leaving the Amber and Pearl. They giggled at her reaction and closed their individual small opening.

“Whoa, who knew (Y/N) was a grade-A creep.” Lapis teased as she crossed her arms making her friends chuckle softly. Spinel was still staring at the spot where (Y/N) had been spying on her from, a soft smile grew on her lips. She couldn’t wait for tomorrow.

Can you do a story with Steven and Spinel dressing up as different animals with a nose mask with each of their animal costumes?

AN: Thank you so much for sending this request! I actually had fun doing it! I had to make it Halloween bc tbh I couldn’t imagine them dressing up in animal costumes any other occasion. I hope you like it ^^

“A week! We gave you a whole week! I can’t believe you couldn’t last a week! No, scratch that! I do believe it!”

Spinel rolled her eyes and continued walking towards the Warp Room, tuning out Yellow Pearl’s useless rambling as said gem followed closely behind her with Blue Pearl and Pink Pearl in tow.

“Aw leave her alone, Yellow!” Pink Pearl said, stepping in to defend Spinel as usual. “What’s wrong with wanting to visit a friend?”

“What’s wrong?! What’s wrong!!! I’ll tell you what’s wrong!!! She does this every single day!! ‘Oh where are you going, Spinel?’ ‘I’m going to visit Steven.’ ‘Oh! Has anyone seen Spinel?’ ‘She’s with Steven, my Diamond.’ With that track record, she’s better off living on Earth with him then staying here in Homeworld.”, Yellow Pearl retaliated, very defensively and with her arms crossed.

“Well...uhm..but Spinel,” Pink Pearl began, searching for what to say. After a few more attempts, she gave up, giving Spinel an apologetic look that told her: ‘She does have a point.’

Yellow Pearl beamed upon seeing this and raised her head up in a very haughty manner. She focused her attention on Blue Pearl. “What do you think, Blue?”

“To be quite honest, it really doesn’t bother me at all. It’s cute that she likes visiting him a lot,” she calmly responded with a small smile on her face, “Besides, Yellow, I thought you were happy about Spinel’s daily trips to Earth. You were talking about it the other day.”

Spinel bit down on her lip, stifling a giggle. Behind her, she heard Pink Pearl try to do the same, but she failed and snorted loudly.

An offended look passed through Yellow Pearl’s face and she crossed her arms, huffing. “At first,” she began to defend herself, “But it gets tiring and frustrating when all your Diamond asks you is: ‘Where’s Spinel? Has anyone seen Spinel?’ I was hoping for a week or more of not having to hear that, but our dear Spinel just couldn’t wait at all! Oh, but 6,000 years? She can definitely wait for that long! That’s nothing for her!”

A thick blanket of silence fell upon everyone the moment those words came out of her mouth.

Pink Pearl stood aside with her hand over her mouth. Blue Pearl’s mouth hung slightly open and with her hands, she pushed back her bangs to reveal her eyes, pupils wide in shock.

It took Yellow Pearl only a matter seconds before she realized what she had just said. She began to stutter, desperately looking for an apology.

“Sp-Spinel! I didn’t m-m-mean it—oh my s-stars!”

It was too late. Before she knew it, she was backed up against a tight corner. Spinel loomed over her, tall and intimidating with her hands balled up into giant fists, ready to take aim. Yellow Pearl gulped and instantly shielded her gem with both her hands.

“S-Spinel! Don’t! She didn’t mean it!” Pink Pearl begged, hands outstretched as if she was about to grab Spinel to stop her, but she didn’t. She held back, only hopeful that her words would get to the gem.

They didn’t. Made obvious by Spinel raising her right hand high over her head.

Yellow Pearl shut her eyes tightly and turned her face away, expecting a very painful blow that never came. Instead, she felt a finger flick her nose, making a loud, audible ‘whack!’ sound.

“H-Huh?” She opened her eyes. Spinel’s large, spiraling, magenta-colored eyes, filled to the brim with dark amusement, were the first thing that greeted her.

“Heh,” the gem chuckled and shook her head softly, “Ya really have a big mouth...For a Pearl. Don’t cha?”

Yellow Pearl remained silent and so did everybody else.

Spinel backed up a few steps. With her arms crossed, she shook her head and clicked her tongue in disapproval. “Gee! With that mouth, I’m very much surprised you’ve been able to hold this position of yours as Yellow Diamond’s Pearl for millions of years. You’re darn lucky things have changed now.”

“I-Spinel…”

She didn’t listen to her. Her eyes roamed around until they landed on the giant Warp Pad in the middle of the room and widened as if she just remembered why she came here in the first place. With a hop, she stretched her way on top of said Pad and warped away without saying anything.

Whatever fear Yellow Pearl had shivering within her disappeared the moment Spinel left and she rolled her eyes, letting out a tremendous sigh. “‘You’re darn lucky things have changed now!’ Bleh!” She mocked, sticking out her tongue.

It went back in the moment Pink Pearl jabbed her elbow into her side.

“Ta-da!! Our last pumpkin for tonight! What do you guys think?” Steven exclaimed with a wide, joyful smile on his face. In his arms, he cradled a large Jack-O-Lantern with a pair of monster eyes and sharp teeth.

“It looks great!” Connie complimented as she walked over and grabbed it from him. She settled it inside the red wagon, alongside the many other Jack-O-Lanterns they made.

“A little bit different than all the others you guys made, don’t you think?” Amethyst said, hopping off from the table to inspect the Jack-O-Lanterns.

She had a point. The majority were decorated with drawings of their closest family and friends: Garnet, Pearl, Bismuth, Lapis, Peridot, the Diamonds, and so on. The only one that actually seemed to be showing the terrifying spirit of Halloween was the one Steven had just finished making.

“That’s actually why I made it,” Steven admitted, chuckling softly, “Now thinking about it though, it kinda sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe it wasn’t a very good idea…”

The growing sound of squeaky shoes approaching quickly caught their attention. They turn around just in time to see Spinel hop down the stairs and run her way towards Steven. Before he could do anything, he found Spinel’s arms wrapping around him and pulling him in for a hug.

“Steven! My good pal!!” Spinel cheered, smiling widely.

“Spinel! It’s nice to see you!” Steven laughed. He gave her a hug and a pat in the back the moment she let him go.

“Hey Spinny!” Amethyst greeted with a wave. “Where you’ve been? We missed you the last three days.”

“Oh, the Pearls needed me for something that was supposedly important at first,” Spinel said, rolling her eyes. Her eyes then fell upon the wagon full of Jack-O-Lanterns and then the bucket full of candy on the table and then the Halloween decorations hanging on the ceiling. “Hey, wait a darn minute! What’s all this stuff?”

“It’s all of our decorations for Halloween!” Connie explained. The young girl grabbed the candy bucket from the table and walked over to Spinel. She held it out to the gem, offering some. “Here. Take one.”

Spinel looked at it, confused at first, but then she pulled out a round, red lollipop.

“Uhm...what’s Halloween??”

“Oh!” Steven exclaimed. “I completely forgot! This is your first Halloween!”

Amethyst scoffed playfully. “Pfft! This is the first Halloween for nearly every gem at Little Homeworld. Spinel, you should’ve seen the presentation Lapis, Peridot, and Bismuth put up a few days ago! Halloween 101. It was a huge riot!” The small gem’s eyes widened. An idea had popped into her head. “HEEYYY! What if we recreate that! Right now!”

Connie nervously laughed as she remembered the disaster that had been the presentation. “How about we not?” She clapped her hands together before grabbing a hold of the wagon’s handle. “People are going to start trick-or-treating soon, so we should start putting these guys up. Steven will tell Spinel everything there is to know about Halloween. Won’t you, Steven?”

He nodded with a small smile. “I’ll see you guys later! If my dad shows up a little bit early, tell him I’m here with Spinel.”

After the others left, Spinel pulled the wrapper off her lollipop and popped it into her mouth. “Now,” she began, crossing her arms together, “What’s this whole Halloween biz?”

“You remember how I told you about the Fourth of July a few months back, right?”

She nodded.

“Halloween is a holiday just like that one. Minus the fireworks and American flags everywhere and also the barbecue. For Halloween, everyone dresses up in costumes, be it scary, funny, or cute, and go around at people’s houses to get candy.

“Oh,” she took out her lollipop and looked at it, “That’s nice.”

“I know, right!? Free candy for a night!”

“Is there a reason ya guys celebrate it?”

“Well...it’s mostly to have fun and it’s the one night you can go around wearing any costume you want.”

“You can’t wear a costume outside of that?”

Steven shook his head, sadly. “Not unless you work at Freddy Fazbear’s or Duck-Fil-A or any other company that has a mascot that requires a costume. Hey, speaking about costumes, it’s a good thing you came here tonight! I have something to show you

She gave him a quizzical look.

Before she could say or do anything, he grabbed her hand and led her to his room. When they got there, the first thing that caught Spinel’s eyes were the two outfits lying neatly on his bed.

“I was having a hard time picking a costume for this year,” he began to explain as he grabbed both of the outfits and showed them off, “But then I decided to ask Lion to decide for me and—guess which one he picked.”

Spinel thought for a second before pointing at the costume at the right.

“Yes! Who would’ve guessed he could be like that, huh? That’s Lion for you.”

The costume was literally a lion costume that Steven had painted pink to make it look exactly like Lion. The other costume...well, she wasn’t exactly sure what it was.

“What about the other one?” She asked.

“That one’s a Cookie Cat costume!”

“Oh...uhm what’s a cookie cat?”

“Oh, Cookie Cat’s an alien cat that left both his family and home behind when he came down here to Earth to escape an interstellar war. He was the mascot of these delicious ice cream sandwiches by the same name. Unfortunately they stopped selling two years ago probably because of competition. Curse you Lion Lickers. I would’ve definitely have bought you some if they still sold them. I’m pretty sure you would’ve liked them.”

Spinel looked at the costume he still held in his hand. Her eyes were focused on Cookie Cat’s two different colored eyes.One white and one pink.

“Yeah, I would have,” She said and then reached out for the costume, taking it out of his hand, “Hey, Steven. C-Can I ask ya somethin’?”

“Hm? Yeah sure.”

“Y-Ya wouldn’t—I-I mean you guys wouldn’t mind if I joined ya for this, would you? I-I think I like the idea of this whole ‘treat-or-trick’ thing.”

Steven smiled at her. It was another one of those types of smiles, so filled with warmth and love, which left Spinel feeling kinda weak every time it happened (and let me tell ya, it was happening quite a lot recently as she came to notice). It took so much of her power to prevent herself from falling victim to her buckling knees or to let her heart-shaped gem fly out of its place in a ‘bumpidity-bump!’ mess.

“I wouldn’t mind and I’m pretty sure the others won't either. Which one would you like? I have this sneople costume and oh—I still have this Pink Diamond outfit from two years ago…”

“Actually,” Spinel began, holding out the Cookie Cat costume in front of her, “I’d like to wear this.”

He smiled again. “Sure! Go ahead.”

She wasted no time in pulling the costume over her and in such a cartoonish manner that Steven had only blinked once when she already had the full costume on.

“How do I look?”

“Great! It’s a perfect fit!” Steven complimented. Just after he said that, the sound of rock music entered through the open window of his room. “Ah, Dad’s here! You can go down with the others. Tell them I’m getting ready.”

“Sure thing!” She said and watched as he quickly walked to the bathroom. Once the door close behind him, she walked down the stairs.

“Spooky scary skeletons,” she sang to herself, happily imagining the fun night that awaited them, “Send shivers down your spine…”

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Arc Chapter 32 Translation

Hi guys!  Long time, no see.  I’d first like to apologize for the long absence on here and for missing several chapters.  But I also want to offer my sincere thanks to those of you who have supported me and been there for me through the past few difficult months.  I’m not quite back to 100%, but I’m trying little by little everyday. :)  And I’ve really missed being part of the community.

So with that, here’s my translation for chapter 32!  If I can get up to it, I would like to try and catch up on the chapters I missed as well, but I also don’t want to be overly ambitious again.  However, I’m going to try to pick up from here and stick to translating the new chapters monthly as best I can.  I hope I can stick to it!

[Note:  Possibly “We’ll be here while we’re in Japan” because Suppie is there too, but since they’re still pretending that Touya doesn’t know anything about magic – including Suppie – “I’ll” and “I’m” would fit better.]

Yukito:  Wha? Nakuru:  You have a lot of (spare) rooms right? Yukito:  <nods> Yeah. Nakuru:  And so (I’ll) be staying here. Yukito:  Okay??

P2 Touya:  Nah, it’s not “okay.” Suppie: … Nakuru:  I wanna eat oden tonight!

Yukito:  Oh yeah, oden’s delicious in the summer too! Touya:  What?

Nakuru:  Tsukishiro-kun, do you cook? Yukito:  Yeah, but Touya’s better at it. Touya:  (The hell)!?

P3 Nakuru:  Well then, Touya-kun, (thanks in advance for) the oden tonight.

[Alt:  Well then, Touya-kun, (we’d like you to make) oden tonight!]

Yukito: <quietly and starry-eyed> Oden… Touya:  WHAT THE HELL!? Nakuru:  Go buy the ingredients! Oh and make sure you add those!  Fish cake and (mochi tofu pockets……)

[Note:  I translated 餅巾着 (mochikinchaku) as “mochi tofu pockets”, but to see a clearer explanation of what they are and how to make them, check this link for a recipe.]

Touya:  Why (are you being) that specific!! Nakuru:  I saw it in a recipe online!  I’m so excited! Nakuru:  Hurry up ♬ Hurry up♪ Yukito:  I’ll (go) with (you). <Nakuru grabs Yukito’s arm>

P4 Yukito:  <quietly> Whoa! Nakuru:  Tsukishiro-kun, could I please get a refill on the tea? Yukito:  Sure. Touya:  I’ll be making it from scratch when I get back, so it’ll be (ready pretty late).

[Lit:  …so it’ll be late when you can eat.]

Nakuru:  (You’d better get a move on then).

[Note:  The text is そこはまきまきでー which is a short, casual version of 巻きでお願いします – a phrase used to urge someone to hurry up when they’re pressed for time.]

Touya:  And you’re gunna help out. Nakuru:  Whaaa!?

P5 Suppie:  What’s with this (weird) sequence of events.

[Alt:  Unnatural flow of events]

Nakuru:  Wasn’t this as natural as could be?

Suppie:  <casually looking at the sweets>  It seems Touya Kinomoto has taken notice of (a lot of things). Yue:   So?  (Why) have you come here?

[Lit:  What’s the reason you’ve come here?]

P6 Nakuru:  Eriol said it was okay to come to Tomoeda. Eriol:  If our methods of communication have been cut off, then (you) should (head there) firsthand. Eriol:  Yuna D. Kaito doesn’t have it in him to crash a plane bearing someone he doesn’t want to come. Kaho:  (He) doesn’t have the power…? Eriol:  No. He does.

P7 Eriol:  However, there would be too many people (caught in the crossfire) and an investigation would be carried out to find a realistic cause of the accident.

[Lit:  ...too many people wrapped up in it…]

Eriol:  He wouldn’t risk a hazard like that.

[Alt:  He wouldn’t risk something dangerous like that.]

Eriol:  Not me, but… Nakuru: …if Suppie and I (were to come), {*he’d be even less likely to do it.*}

P8 Suppie:  It’s Spinel. Nakuru:  So what?  It’s cute! And Kaho is calling you that too recently. Suppie:  It’s (disappointing)!

[Note:  不本意 (fuhoni) literally means “involuntarily” or against one’s will.  I think the nuance is that it’s against Suppie’s will, rather than Kaho doing it against her will.]

Yue:  What did he tell you to do? Nakuru:  He said “Stay close by.” Yue:  To (our) mistresses’?

P9 Nakuru:  By yours’… Suppie:  …and Kerobero’s (sides). Yue:  …… Nakuru:  Tsukishiro-kun has (been falling) asleep a lot recently, right? Suppie:  As has Keroberos, hasn’t he?

P10 Nakuru:  Sakura-chan is certainly Yue and Keroberos’ master and the contract is being (upheld), but the cards you protect are currently in the hands of Li Syaoran.

[Alt:  …but Li Syaoran currently holds the cards that you protect.]

P11 Nakuru:  It’s reckless to take and use cards originally belonging to someone else without (first) passing them over through a formal magic ritual. Nakuru:  {*And to actually be able to do it is even more reckless.*} Nakuru:  But as expected, even the successor of the Li Clan has his hands full with the cards. Suppie:  In other words…

P12 Suppie:  The reason you’ve (been) drowsy, is because (your) magic isn’t enough.

[Note:  The implication being there isn’t enough magic to support them, so it could alternately be “…because her magic isn’t enough”.]

Nakuru:  Just like when Touya-kun was so sleepy-weepy in high school. Suppie:  In that state, when the time comes that your mistress needs you… Nakuru:  …you won’t be able to (do anything) because you’ll be sleepy-weepy too.

[Alt:  …won’t be able to move because…]

P13 Yue:  Even though her magic is strengthening to the point that she’s unconsciously creating new cards? Suppie:  She can’t control her magic to the point that she’s unconsciously creating new cards. Suppie:  You could say that as well, couldn’t you?

[Alt:  We could also say that, right?]

Yue:  ……

P14 Nakuru:  And that’s why… Nakuru:  I’ll (stick with) Yue and Suppie will (stick with) Keroberos. Suppie:  So we can split the magic (we have) from Eriol (to share) with you. Suppie:  The Sakura Cards are formerly Clow Cards.  Clow Reed is the one who made the Clow Cards.  And Eriol is half of Clow. Suppie:  (As he put it), the root of the magic is the same, so it (will be) alright. Suppie:  Of course, those (would be considered) emergency measures.

[Lit:  Of course, these would be emergency measures.]

P15 Yue:  …… Yue:  Understood.  In other words, Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun, (you) are… Yue:  …“Batteries.” Nakuru:  Ahahaha! Suppie:  What the hell!?

P18 <Scene changes to Akiho’s> Kaito:  I see.  So they’ve come. Momo:  Quite the schemer, that Hiiragizawa Eriol. Kaito:  It’s for Sakura-san’s sake that they’ve gone this far, right?

P19 Kaito:  She is dearly loved by (all of) those around her. Momo:  …Akiho loves (her) too.

[Alt:  …Akiho loves that girl too.]

Kaito:  …… <Doorbell rings>

P20 Akiho:  I’m home! Kaito:  Welcome home! <Text around Momo reads “Pretending to be a stuffed animal”> Akiho:  I’m home, Momo. Kaito:  I’ve just put on some milk tea.  Would you like to have some with a snack? Akiho:  (I’d love some!)  I’ll go wash my hands.

P21 Akiho:  Whenever I come home, you always have tea and snacks prepared for me. How do you know?

Sakura:  …Thank you.

P26 Sakura:  I’m really happy we’ve been together like we’ve been since you came to Tomoeda in the 4th grade. P27 Sakura:  Syaoran-kun!? Narration:  Syaoran has somehow (become) a child…!? The new development (you) can’t peel (your) eyes from!!

Empire City Con 2019

I can say with confidence that this has been the best weekend of my life. People will be so quick to say that the Steven Universe fandom is one of the most toxic fandoms out there, but in all my years of going to conventions, this has been the most welcoming and friendly by far. Now, this could be because it’s a convention based on one singular fandom, as opposed to the mishmash of fandoms that gather at other conventions, but even Bronycon was nowhere near this level of welcoming. Then again, I only got the chance to go to 2 Bronycons so I don’t know if I can say much.

The flight to North Carolina was surprisingly not that bad. I’m very prone to getting lost, but I left 4 hours in advance and I didn’t even need those 4 hours. But this was my first time ever flying somewhere completely alone.

I got the chance to meet Deedee Magno Hall, who signed my Guide to the Crystal Gems. Now it’s my goal to get all the character pages signed. But it’s got all the fusions of season 1, so chances are I won’t ever get the chance to get Sugilite’s page signed. Oh well, a fan can dream, right? Just kind of a bummer because she happens to be my favorite fusion.

She also validated my OC ship with Yellow Pearl which was super cool of her. Deedee is a really sweet person. While waiting in line to meet her I made friends with a kid, and he was fanboying like crazy. Later on we met somebody else, and we all did karaoke together. Then they got to do a group Karaoke with Deedee, which I was unfortunately too nervous to join. She said she would try do one with me but we never got the chance, but either way I’m so grateful. She’s a really kind person and I hope I can meet her again!

My part in the karaoke was still really fun though. Me and my 2 friends were having a hard time figuring out what song to do, and since the instrumentals were live, the people playing only had a limited number of songs they could play. Eventually we agreed on Stronger than you. But the instrumental team couldn’t play that one, so one of my new friends asked everybody to sing along and be inclusive. I got to to do the Peridot rap onstage too! Only me and 1 other person in the audience did that though so it was really scary and I fumbled a lot... but I’m still so happy that I got to because it was just such a good time for everybody.

There was actually a garnet cosplayer who’s act was right before ours and they were still by the karaoke lineup, so one of my friends asked them to come join us. Toward the middle of our act, this same friend spotted a Jasper in the front row, dragged them up on stage, and we had an adorable fake fight scene. I had to hop off stage right before the song ended to hug somebody in the front row who was crying. I was relieved to hear that they were tears of joy. In the end, they invited my group to sit in the front row with them.

Right, and Garnet’s act! They actually sang the original SU opening in German which was super amazing. Toward the end, there was a Pearl cosplayer in her Mr. Greg tuxedo who sang It’s Over isn’t it with Deedee, and a Yellow Pearl cosplayer who did an amazing Yellow Pearl-y take on Do it for her. So yeah the variety of acts was fantastic and the whole thing was just so feel-good all around.

At the very end of the karaoke, after everyone had gotten a chance and we were all just hanging out in the karaoke room, I was given a Spinel promo pin by a Mystery Girl. Not literally a Mystery Girl cosplayer, but somebody who I thought was just... well, somebody. They mentioned having extras from the movie screening in CA, and were handing them out to Spinel cosplayers. Of course I was hopping up and down being super thankful to an awkward degree, like I normally do.

That night, I told my roommates what happened, and they told me just who that Mystery Girl was. None other than Mackenzie Atwood, creator of the Pearl’s Secret Rap Career series. My facial recognition is terrible, so I didn’t realize at the time. I was lucky enough to run into her again the next morning during breakfast in the hotel lobby, so I got to thank her personally in the end.

Speaking of Mystery Girls, there actually was a Mystery Girl cosplayer who was especially awesome. Not even ten minutes after arriving at the convention, I see 2 Spinels who welcome me into their Spinel group. A Mystery Girl cosplayer is with them, and they hand me a pair of shoe squeakers. They look like tiny clear whoopie cushions, and Mystery Girl was handing them out to all the Spinels. I don’t know about everybody else, but mine drew a lot of attention from other con-goers because I was super happy and energetic at this con so I ran everywhere I went. People were always laughing and it made me so happy that I was able to make people smile. I’ll definitely be using them again in my future Spinel cosplays.

One of the people I shared a hotel room with was a Spinel cosplayer on the first day, and they were carrying an amazing Spinel plushie that I remember seeing a photo of on Deviantart, and later showed up for sale on Etsy. It was super expensive and I remember wanting it, but I couldn’t be jealous because I know I was super lucky to even see the thing in real life!

On the second day, I met a sweet little girl who seemed to think I was the real Spinel. She drew me a picture of Baby Spinel, and I gave her my drawing of Baby Spinel which I’d made earlier that day in the quiet room. Later on, one of the convention organizers was holding a game session, and this kid crushed me in a round of Gem Gem Clod... which is Duck Duck Goose, but better. Note to self: playing games that involve running when wearing pink high heeled boots probably isn’t gonna go well!

After some games, we made some meep morps. Somebody started a trend of drawing Lion on the little canvases we were given, but my Lion wasn’t coming out quite right, so after I finished drawing his head I just. put it on one single leg. You’ve heard of Leg Pearl, now get ready for Leg Lion. I was super happy about that too because I made everybody laugh.

Once we ran out of canvases, the organizer offered to take polaroids of some of us, so now me and this adorable little kid had matching photos, which we put in tiny pink frames and put a Spinel gem on each.

oh also! the game organizer had a tattoo on their leg of a bunch of anime characters, mainly the cute “squad mascot” archetype. There was Hawk, Happy, a few other characters, and Keroro! I totally freaked out over Keroro because it’s a relatively obscure series, and it was the first show that really got me into anime! I’ve always loved things like Pokemon and Naruto, but Keroro Gunso was my gateway to the anime community as a whole.

At around noon, I spent a little more time in the room where the games were held, which had some board games of its own, books, and art supplies and overall functioned as just a room to hang out in. There I met a Pink Diamond cosplayer in a pink schoolgirl uniform and an Uravity hat (really cute outfit!), and a goth Spinel cosplayer. The Pink Diamond cosplayer was a great artist and drew a really cute magical girl Steven. These 2 people also taught me what a vsco girl was when they were joking about the fact that Pink Diamond would totally be one. I was super confused but it was really funny after they explained it.

There was a cosplay fashion show much later in the day and I made friends with a Ruby and Sapphire while sitting in line. They were a couple irl and went on stage together and they were adorable! They were also both Hazbin Hotel and Harry Potter fans, so we had a lot to talk about. We kept talking while we waited in line for the Sadie Killer and the Suspects concert too, and a few other people joined us. I’d only just met these people but I really felt surrounded by friends.

Earlier in the day, while I was waiting in line to meet Kinetic Cosplay, I ran into an amazing Sour Cream and Buck Dewey. I got their photo, only to later see them on stage as a part of the real life Sadie Killer and the Suspects. Jenny Pizza was also on stage, but I didn’t see her before that.

While the convention was great, something also happened that scared the hell out of me. At NYCC just last month, I bought some very tiny stickers, one of which was Froppy from BHNA. When I got home and unpacked, it was gone. I thought maybe it fell into the fabric of my backpack, and if it did, there was really no way to retrieve it unless it decided to fall out again. However at the convention... I was at the registration table, decorating my con badge. I pick up my phone, and suddenly the Froppy sticker falls out of nowhere. It looked like it came from the phone, but I can’t imagine where it would have fit and gotten stuck. It kinda just fell out of the void. Either way I’m glad to have it back.

Lets see... I also got some pictures of the real life Mr. Universe van... and later on I ran into the owner of the van in full Mr. Universe gear.

The Garnet cosplayer was Cotton Candy garnet on the second day and I still can’t get over how sweet and nice they were.

There were some family cosplays. On the first day I saw a Yellowtail carrying a baby doll dressed as Onion, and then on the second day the same person was with a Vidalia cosplayer, and an actual child dressed as Onion.

There were also a pair of parents dressed as Connie’s mom and dad, and their kid dressed as Connie.

On the first day there was a Mr. Smiley which was super cool and unexpected, and then on the second day they were Bismuth. There were actually 3 Bismuths in total at the con which was surprising because that wig looks super difficult to make. Anyone who can pull that off is amazing!

The last day only went on until about noon, but my flight didn’t leave until the next day. I didn’t book my hotel room for that night because I wanted extra time in case I got lost on the way to the airport. Turned out there were free shuttles. I ended up in the same shuttle as that Pink Diamond cosplayer and her dad, and she showed me this adorable RPG game app called Wholesome Cats. We took some snapchats together and now I know what I’d look like as a boy...

Since there was a shuttle to the airport, that meant I was super early for my flight. Super early as in, almost 12 hours early. After going through security, I was planning to just sleep at the gate, but my gate number wasn’t on the screen. So I asked an airport employee, and he told me that I wasn’t even supposed to be let through security until the next day, which was when my gate number was supposed to show up... whoops. It wasn’t so bad though, either way I’d just be hanging out at the airport for the night. I decided not to sleep though, just in case. It felt weird late at night, when the airport was more or less completely empty. It was so nice and quiet, and the Starbucks was still open so I had a super yummy dinner of pumpkin bread and cheese danishes.

In conclusion!

This was by far my favorite convention I’ve ever been to, because you could literally just go up to someone, start talking, and you’d immediately have an awesome new friend. I’ve never been to a con before where every single person was so approachable. It really felt like everybody there was one big family. I already have a potential roommate for next year, so I really hope to get back on my feet soon so I can go!
