On Solas & That One Scene in Act I

Discussions of Blood magic + spoilers for endgame ahead (Seriously don't read unless you've finished the game)

I sincerely apologize if this has already been said (I don't keep up with the Solas tag), and not to keep being Annoying on Main, but I've seen a few posts suggesting the Bioware devs forgot how Solas feels about blood magic in DATV and I have to disagree.

In Inquisition, Solas has a neutral opinion on blood magic. He sees it as a tool, like any other form of magic, and no more or less dangerous depending on how its used.

In Veilguard, in that one scene with Rook, he says "I abhor the use of Blood Magic" and people say this is out of character.

I don't think it is.

It only seems that way if you take his words at face value.

Think about it. If he openly says to Rook, who he just met, "Yeah I'm actually fine with blood magic depending on how its used and I may or may not have used it on you" - how well do we think that conversation is going to go. Rook already has no reason to trust Solas. Him openly admitting how he feels about blood magic would destroy any remaining credibility he could build with Rook in order to mold them into a pawn. Rook would shut down and not listen to him because they would be questioning their own thoughts by this point.

Solas has a habit of using people & spirits as tools to accomplish is end goal. Using their blood should be no different.

I actually thought it was completely in character for him to decry the use of blood magic, to disarm Rook by saying 'Had I the power to control your mind I would have used it already' " - which gets Rook to at least listen to the rest of what he has to say. I think that line gave him some buy-in with Rook.

And what do you know, Rook buys it and doesn't realize until the end just how much Solas is actually is fine with using Blood magic - to the point of making them hallucinate a memory of dead Varric to keep them going.

It's all very clever for, and I quote, the Elven god of trickery, lies & betrayal.

i can't get over how cute javier is when he introduces himself to ppodong. he's so serious about it that lloyd thinks he's about to question his cover story for how ppodong was summoned but no. he was just thinking really hard about how he should call him or if he had a name. and then when lloyd gives him the go ahead to call ppodong however he wants he just. calls him sir ppodong and fucking shakes hands with him. he introduces himself and shakes hands with the hamster like c'mon that's so fucking cute i cannot stop thinking about it just look at him

it's adorable.

and it's also one of the first times in the novel that you get the sense that 'oh. that's a kid.' it's subtle and lowkey but you can kinda feel that javier is actually excited about ppodong, he's curious about him and really gentle when he meets him. like. he's just a kid. a kid that probably never had a pet before and is now in close proximity with a cute and fluffy little hamster and just. wants to know his name.

it's just. it's very cute.

I keep rotating this line in my head lately - mostly, in comparison to the idea that Vegas will be feeling immense guilt about wanting to "hurt" Pete post-canon. I always have to take a step back and remind myself that this particular idea is a headcanon: nowhere in the show does Vegas actually express such thoughts or feelings to Pete, or even to himself. Everything that happens in regards to VegasPete has to do with Vegas not treating Pete like a person, but an outlet for his frustration and self-loathing, to put it very plainly. It doesn't mean that the guilt is not there, it's just that we, the fans, interpreted it this way (myself included). It's particularly funny to me though, as well as very intriguing, how what Vegas and Pete did while having sex wasn't even on the sadomasochistic side of BDSM - if we could even call what VP engaged in as such. The chains, the rope, even the position with Vegas being a literal weight on Pete's body: this all indicated that Vegas took the role of the dominant and Pete took the role of the submissive. It's because of this that I find Vegas' words here a little amusing and very, very sad: he finds his desire to dominate people shameful and freaky. And in my opinion, that's what he'll be feeling guilty over post-canon. It makes me wonder if the main reason for it is because in the past, he had to force people into the role of the submissive and it didn't happen willingly. We don't know how he was fucking Tawan (if he was even the top in that exchange), but the glimpse we got made it seem to me like Tawan was coerced into doing things he didn't really want to, in order to keep Vegas in his life and to please him (like the whole mission with Kinn). I'm not denying that Vegas could have sadistic tendencies and/or desires - the show did demonstrate such ideas and, mask or no mask, he could want to hurt Pete during sex down the line. I just really love thinking about the possibility that what Vegas wanted this entire time was someone who'd willingly submit to him, and how that could fuck him up post-canon because he thinks he doesn't deserve Pete's submission, even when he chose to offer it.

Something I've been thinking a lot about lately is how everyone thought Egon had gone insane. What Happened that made them think that. They've fought a gigantic Stay Puft Marshmellow Man TWICE (counting the 2009 video game because iirc it's canon? Correct me if I'm wrong), fought an interdimensional god, fought a blood thirsty ruler that killed thousands and was hated by all that was trapped in a painting (and managed to get in to beat him by making THE STATUE OF LIBERTY start walking down the street with slime that reacted purely based on vibes), found an underground abandoned transit system full of the moodslime, had a bathtub try to eat Dana and her baby, fought a giant murderous black widow lady, fought the fisherman ghost who turned an entire hotel floor into the bottom of a ocean, and that's not even mentioning them getting trapped on an island that randomly raised up from underwater that had been abandoned for decades created by Ivor Shandor who worshipped Gozer. So what did he do or say that made everyone else think he'd gone insane?? All I can think is maybe he was acting strange / eratic before, but he's always been like that to some degree.

I don't know. It's something that I've been thinking about. The correct answer is 'it's not that deep and they needed a reason that the others weren't together anymore and weren't aware of Egons death or know what was going on,' but also. What Was He Saying that prompted everyone, including Ray, to think he lost his mind when he'd been right almost every time before that.

I'm genuinely so curious as to what he was up to before this. What was he doing. What insane idea was working on prior to this or was he even working on anything at all??

Also want to clarify this post isn't negative 😭 I really love the newer movies and their lore / the newer storyline / characters, I just like thinking about small stupid things like this. Gives me something to think about / speculate about / figure out an answer to.

So, when I played Lucanis’s questline for the first time, I genuinely thought that Illario was going to turn out to also be possessed. I like to try to come up with theories if there's some kind of mystery involved. Obviously, Illario is suspicious from the get-go but if you want to give him the benefit of the doubt you can, after all, grief really does make people act strangely, but not usually immediately after the death. But when he shows up after the defeat of Zara and kills her just as she says “Amatus” upon seeing him there's no doubt he was in cahoots with her. But then something interesting happens, he uses blood magic, some enchanted pin. He still keeps up the act of innocence though. We get further confirmation during the questioning of Zara’s corpse that the two were extremely close, at least from her perspective. But then we get a strange little tidbit from the memories of Lucanis later in his quest line when you're with spite. Lucanis has a memory or maybe it's some warped memory of Zara talking about the cultivation of an Envy demon. 

Zara’s project was to cultivate and bind different types of demons more easily through new techniques. Zara was talented enough to be able to put a demon inside of a non-mage subject, something that shouldn't be possible in the first place, or at least unheard of. She also wanted to cultivate certain types of demons, ones that are more rare and possibly harder to bind. We see the results of most of her test subjects, either walking corpses or bound demons. Let's say she agrees to take Lucanis to be a test subject, thinking the whole thing would just kill him and the terms of her deal with Illario would be met. Let's say shes surprised Lucanis is even able to merge with spite, let alone survive well afterward. Now let's say this gets her thinking, can she replicate this? Can she put demons and spirits into non-mages? Was this a freak accident?

I know I’m speculating a lot here but hang with me. Now I don't know if her scheme is to take advantage of Illarios jealousy and use it to create an envy demon, something rare and hard to bind, but it would naturally be attracted to that much envy in a person. Or maybe it's presented as an opportunity later down the line, that Illario could become an abomination and gain as much power as one, being able to tap into magic even if not in full control would still give him an edge. I don't know, I just think there was a bit more to the story that we don't know about, aside from what we’ve seen in some of the concept art. Which shows something akin to Illario being manipulated by either Zara or some kind of desire demon or??? Just someone in a pool of blood, with horns? But pieces of these ideas got left behind in the game. Fragments of something larger and it drives me up the wall. 

There's an obvious romantic connection between Illario and Zara that is never elaborated upon in conversation, It is a deeply interesting tidbit of information and nothing is done with it. Then there's Zara’s line in Lucanis’ memories of her saying that the conditions of cultivating an envy demon must be perfect (the line that sent me through this spiral). And then there is Lucanis’ log book. His 5th one if you don't save Treviso shares a reading list of books and he writes some notes with his thoughts about each. He says that Spite “trusts nothing to do with envy demons” which to be fair to spite, is reasonable they're… creepy, and envy as an emotion is a huge liar sometimes. 

There's just something there. Obviously, the story got cut up and changed with time but there was a time when I started to think that the reason Illario is so suspicious is that he's a red herring, or he's a patsy, or not in control of himself or being manipulated or SOMETHING. But no he's just… kinda stupid. He locked up his grandmother and kept her alive? IS HE STUPID?

Anyway, I just like the idea of some grander conspiracy or grander narrative and that maybe Illario wasn't all to blame for everything or that he was, and he was actually even more villainous. Being controlled by his own jealousy to the point of madness blah blah blah you see why I’m thinking about this so much now yeah?
