Stephan Bibrowski, also known as "Lionel the Lion-Faced Man," was born in 1890 in Poland with a rare condition called hypertrichosis, which caused his body and face to be covered in thick hair. His mother believed that his condition was caused by witnessing his father being attacked by a lion before his birth. She gave him away shortly after he was born.
By the time he was four, Bibrowski had been discovered by a German showman and began performing in sideshows across Europe. Eventually, he moved to the United States, where he gained fame in the circus world, particularly with Barnum & Bailey Circus. Bibrowski was known to be gentle, intelligent, and well-spoken, often surprising audiences with his fluency in multiple languages and his polite demeanor.
After a successful career, Bibrowski returned to Europe in the 1930s, where he lived quietly until his death in 1932.

Wonderland Theater of “freaks” and “bizarre exhibits” was once in Denver, Colorado
Back in the mid-1800’s Denver’s Curtis Street between Fifteenth and Nineteenth street was home to “Theater Row.” It started with the Apollo Hall in 1859. Then the Tabor Grand opened in 1881. Many more theaters followed.

The theater was the final Curtis Street theater to be destroyed by a wrecking ball…

I am about to ask something that is probably really insensitive but please bear with me because I tried to look it up but didn't get far.
I was reading something that mentioned the old fashioned 'freak shows' and it got me thinking, why were there so many 'freaks' during those times? I understand if you gather them all in one place it looks like there are a lot, but there were so many various kinds of people in those places that there doesn't seem to be now. Or maybe they aren't as widely publicised because of course it's no one's business.
I was curious whether it was because of maybe toxins and chemicals that got into people's systems that is now regulated, inbreeding, or environmental things that impacted more people in the past than now?
I know conjoined twins still happen and dwarfism etc are normalised now which is great. Plus there are surgeries and medication to take to help a lot of those other conditions. Twisted spines can have surgery, extra limbs etc can be dealt with if wanted. But are there still the same amount of genetic variations happening or was it statistically more likely 100-150 years ago?
#I like to think we simply don't abandon or showcase people for simply being different now#But for a few pictures you see where there is a genetic anomaly are they just as common#I don't know how to tag this#p.t. barnum#sideshows#circus#circus folk

Jean Libbera was known as "The Double Bodied Man" due to the fact that he had a parasitic twin joined to his body. Jean had been born in the late 19th century in Italy with the rare congenital deformity. His twin was attached to his body in a way that their head and upper torso protruded from Jean's own torso.
He was one of 13 children, another one of whom also had a parasitic twin but did not survive past infancy. Jean's twin was underdeveloped and non-functional, with its head incapable of independent thought or movement. He depended completely on Jean for survival.
Jean's rare condition drew the attention of both medical professionals and the general public. He became a feature in sideshows, also known as "freak shows" at the time in Europe and the United States. Unlike many individuals with unusual physical conditions who were exploited in such exhibitions, Jean was said to live a comfortable life and capitalized on his condition,
Jean eventually retired from the sideshows and lived a quiet life with his wife and four children until his death in his 50s.
