Best person to keep a secret, their mouth is sealed and they are intimidating. If gossips bring up the subject they will be cold saying "It's none of your business"

Dean blinked in shock. "Y/N? What are you doing here?"

"Ya know, just hangin' out." She awkwardly leaned against the doorway and winced when she accidentally whacked her elbow. She rubbed the sore spot. "What are you doing here?"

"Well we..."

The longer haired man. Sam, she thinks his name is, reached into his pocket and pulled out an ID. He nudged Dean to do the same.

"We're -"

"You two are not FBI," she interrupted.

"How do you know that?" Sam countered.

"I've had my fair share of run ins with the Feds." She crossed her arms over her chest and stared Sam down.

"Why have you interacted with the FBI?"

"I'm a criminal mastermind," she deadpanned.

Dean snickered. Sam frowned at his brother.

"Why are you two really here?"

"You wouldn't believe us if we told you."

"Try me."

"Alright," Dean said. "Monsters Exist."

He waited for a freak out, but all he got was a blank stare.

"You don't seem surprised."

"I'm not."

"You're not?"

"Nope."

"Oookay. Well, my brother and I are what we call Hunters. We find and kill monsters. We think your classmate Chrissy Cunningham was killed by a demon and Eddie Munson may be possessed by one."

"Eddie Munson isn't possessed by a demon and he sure as shit didn't kill Chrissy Cunningham. She was killed by a sorcerer called Vecna who resides in an alternate dimension that we call the Upside Down."

She could feel her friends' eyes burning into the back of her head and practically hear them scream, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Sam and Dean stared at her like she grew a second head.

"You seem surprised."

"We are."

Y/N raised an eyebrow. "You two hunt monsters for a living, but an alternate dimension shocks you?"

Dean shrugged. "You got us there, Sweetheart."

"Only I get to call her Sweetheart," Eddie grumbled.

"Shhh." Dustin nudged the rowboat his friend hid in to shut him up.

"So," Sam said. "Do you know where Eddie is?"

Y/N opened her mouth to answer, but was stopped by Steve. He grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

"What are you doing?" he hissed.

"Maybe they can help."

"Help?" He ran a hand over his face. "You are making a huge risk!"

"We are at a disadvantage against Vecna without El. Two more people who fight monsters could be really helpful for us."

"So you're not just doing this because you think Dean is hot?"

Y/N glared at him, offended. "I would never put Eddie's life at risk for an attractive guy and you suggesting otherwise is extremely hurtful, Steve."

He deflated. "I'm sorry. You're right, that was too far. If you trust Dean, I can give him a chance too."

"Thank you."

She turned back to the Winchesters and welcomed them in, closing the door behind them.

Her friends stared at the brothers with caution. Dean greeted everyone with a nod.

"Eddie, you can come out now."

The Metalhead threw off the tarp and turned to look at the new arrivals. His eyes widened at the sight of Dean and his cheeks flushed red.

Oh shit.

Dean's face felt hot as he stared. No one has the right to have eyes that big or that brown. His stomach twisted with nerves and he clenched his sweaty hands.

Why is it that this small town in Indiana had two of the hottest people he had ever seen in his life?

Son of a Bitch, he thought.

Hi anon! I encourage all questions! No such thing as a dumb one, truly. How can something that leads to more knowledge be dumb? So thank you for asking! It gives me an opportunity to talk about pop culture (omg if I could have gotten another PhD in pop culture studies, I totally would, istg I was THIS CLOSE to doing it). AND IT ALSO GIVES ME A REASON TO TALK ABOUT SAD BOI NAMJOON!

The “sad girl” is an aesthetic and characterization that has gone through many evolutions and holds many facets, but describes an expression, aesthetic, and, in some cases, romanticization of reveling in the beauty of existential pain. 

The Sad Girl reads Sylvia Plath and Albert Camus. The Sad Girl listens to SZA, Snoh Aalegra, Jazmine Sullivan, Kehlani, Sara Bareilles, later Kacey Musgraves, Adele, Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell, Roberta Flack, Mazzy Star... music right at or under 100 bpm and with plenty of minor keys. The Sad Girl likes nocturnes. And the Sad Girl is nocturnal, likes pretty and delicate things, is sensitive, can bottle up feelings until they come out in big, rolling tears. The Sad Girl enjoys a good cry.  The Sad Girl would watch Casablanca over Singin’ in the Rain. If the Sad Girl is a Freudian defense mechanism, she would be catharsis. The great Shenee from Grown Ass Fandom once told me this was “recreational sadness", a term that made me cackle and that I now hold dear! (Check out her podcast if you haven’t already!)

I’m curious to know if fellow self-proclaimed Sad Girls out there would like to weigh in? 

These are, of course, generalizations. Personally, it is less about #YouLookPrettyWhenYouCry for me and more about my own proclivity for gentle nostalgia and learning how to express your negative feelings. It just so happens that when I am feeling negative, I reach for sadness and detachment before anger. So that’s what drives it for me. Looking back on things not necessarily to regret or mourn, but to remind me to just go for it and move forward in moments where my tendency is to shy away, sacrifice, and lament instead. It’s why my soft feels are really my hard feels, and why I am a tender tsundere.

Like with everything else, the term is not without its controversy! This Vice article by Alice Hines shares really key and interesting points about cultural appropriation of the sad girl aesthetic, namely, that it comes from systems in which there is male oppression, and to attach it to a Western, affluent identity removes a certain aspect of the inhibiting aspects that necessitated it. Removing it from its original and nuanced contexts takes vital aspects away, and I definitely see that point.

So now, we come to Sad Boi Namjoon.

Sad boys are the male sad girl corollary, and Sad Boi Namjoon is AMOMK!Namjoon. He struggles with love because his heart is just so full. He romanticizes life. Romanticizes love itself. Was too optimistic early in life and got burned, and is shying away from the world as a result. Listens to Brandy and, like, Frank Ocean and Cuco. 

In fact, Cuco is on Namjoon’s recommended songs on Spotify. 

And Cuco recently dropped a song called “Caution” that I screamed to @mochilatae / Roomie about BECAUSE IT IS 100% AMOMK!NAMJOON TO A T! TO A T!!!!!!

And when it comes to Sad Girl, he pines. 

But there’s something deeper here that I want to say about Sad Girls and Sad Bois, so stay tuned as you see their characters develop!

Looking back at SMT IV, something bothers me about the plot. You know that alignment fork after Shene Duque, where you have to go with either Jonathan or Walter? Before all that you're told that the people of Tokyo can't come to Mikado or they'll be killed. Wouldn't it have made sense to have a third path, where you go with Isabeau instead and try to warn Fujiwara and Skins and then maybe something else happens?

Since Flynn basically has no character in the game other than the choices available to him, I always thought the Jonathan/Walter binary split to be a (completely unintentional) indictment of his intelligence and critical thinking skills and makes his lionization in Apocalypse extra funny. In reality, there’s no third choice because of the intentional design to make Neutral harder to achieve.

But I honestly think that’s a poor reason to not include a scenario like you describe, where you met up with the Tokyo players and then take out both Lilith and Tayama, which is the obvious sensible choice from the perspective of an SMT veteran and ethically since the arguments for supporting either are not incredibly compelling. Might need a few narrative shifts, but Jon/Walt can kinda fuck off for a bit but still meet up at the Yamato where the story could proceed as normal.

But Jon/Walt still seem to me the weak links of the alternate Tokyo sections since they are each meant to be the versions chosen by the player, but there’s nothing compelling or progressing about either, but regression in some sense. DIving deep into Identity Crisis images:

They never seem to question or really think deeply about what’s in front of them in these scenarios, just continuing to act as the player’s voice or describing things. Like Jonathan should object to destroying Pluto if it’s part of God’s plan and a Walter who just murdered some dudes in real Tokyo should not be questioning pillaging, he should be “hell yes, I love destroying things because this is a world where the strong can do as we please.” The alt. Tokyos could have only been enhanced if only one character was present in each, allowing the player to not only see the weaknesses or strengths of alignment for themselves but allow much needed individual character development for both reps. Mini character studies.

Writing is one of SMT4′s big weaknesses for sure and maybe it’s a result of the tug of war between the “bitter” and “sweet” camps. But unlike Apocalypse, it’s maybe only a script revision or two (and maybe a world building revision or two) away from being sufficient. Honestly, I may be being kind there. Based on trends, there’s reason to expect similar things from SMT5′s writing.

Marissa Tandon is a black woman who's made a bunch of shows - in particular Super Ordinary, which I'm pretty sure has a couple of queer characters. Also check out Jordan Cobb's work - she's a black woman who made Here Be Dragons, which has a bunch of queer characters. (1/2)

sOther audio dramas made by black people and featuring majority black casts include Fan Wars by Shenee Howard, Sumeria by Mark Luckie, Vega by Ivuoma Okoro, Deadbeats Inc by Aisha Casey, Bronzeville and Harlem Queen - though I'm not sure about queer rep. Shows made by mixed crews with black queer characters include Unwell (Lily is a queer black woman), Forest 404, The Lavender Ladies podcast, Kalila Stormfire and Masala Jones (2/2 - but sorry, there's more)

Punishment Island is made in Uganda and stars a queer black woman. The Van is engineered by Rye Dorsey, who is a black person, and features a bunch of queer characters. When Angels Visit Armadillo is made by a mixed crew and features a black lesbian character. Ok, I think that's everything I know!! Radio Elusia also has a mixed crew and black director, but I don't know if it'll feature queer characters (3/3)

Thanks so much! This is a great bunch to look at. Fan Wars can confirm no queer rep but it’s a very fun story. If you’re Star Wars Fan and have spent time in fanspheres it’s really worth a listen.

@mistah-aluminum and @cactusjuicepod also suggested the list put out by the folks at Death By Dying which isn’t exclusively queer but has some really good ones and overlaps with @lesetoilesfous suggestions. Find that here.

@bi-blue suggested Caravan, which has a creator of colour as the lead writer/director/producer and a whole cast of indigenous, black, people of colour working on the project. I love Caravan it’s a really fun story. A queer Western meets Dante’s inferno.

Have you heard of the RedWing Audio Drama? I can best describe it as queer black batman. Main character is a queer black man, by day he’s an uber rich philantropist, by night he’s a masked superhero. This podcast is fun cuz it’s got all the wish fulfillment/power fantasy tropes that’s usually aimed at a white cishet able bodied men, but this one’s aimed at the more marginalized people, queer people of color especially.

I can also recommend the Fuck Humans Podcast. Which is about a post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy world where humans and monsters live, and any relations between them are forbidden by law. And the story is about how love overcomes hatred and prejudice (and also hot monster fucker porn with plot and  feelings. be aware that this is an erotica podcast so the sex scenes are very graphic and that’s the selling point)

I also really love The Glass Appeal. It’s the future but many people are dying from diseases we’ve already cured because of capitalism. So a rogue group of cyberneticists are going around trying to start the solarpunk revolution by teaching people how to take care of themselves. but they’ve been framed by the big companies for bioterrorism and our main character was sent to jail and it’s up to his husband to prove his innocence. Despite the harsh conditions, this show feels really hopeful and the married couple dynamic of the main characters is the sweetest thing

Those are the shows i’d recommend at the top my head, but i’ve got more i just can’t remember them rn cuz i’m subscribed to literally 300 shows at this point. my dms are always open for talking about and recommending podcasts!”

What if SMT4 was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe au?

I know it’s a weird idea but I couldn’t get it out of my head and wrote the basic gist of it since I never think I’ll actually have the time to write this especially with college.

The SMT4 movies:

(Precedes Avengers) Phase 1

The Cobalt Samurai-Basically the events of the first part of the game all the way up till them seeing the Underground which instead of Tokyo is New York in the MCU. Most of the superfluous side quests are shown through montage (Ex. The side quests that are a part of the challenges Navarre gives them.). At the movies midpoint the events of Kiccigiori village would transpire. The events of Kiccigiori are expanded on and a big chuck of the movie. Flynn is given more of a character before the events of Kiccigiori he feels a bit homesick and thinks of what he left behind. We see what actually happens to Flynn’s parents in the movie rather than it being left ambiguous like the game. For the first time the others see a strange flicker of gold in Flynn’s eyes which becomes clearer and continues throughout the movies. The finale is the Minotaur fight and then them gazing upon New York.

(The beginning takes place before Avengers but the middle and latter parts are mostly after the Avengers) Phase 2

The Cobalt Samurai: The Black Samurai- They leave the sky tower which disappears behind them seemingly leaving them trapped in New York. They continue the journey while they are pursued by a Hydra agent named Medusa. Nozomi first appears in this movie and helps them adjust to life on Earth. Nanashi and Asahi have a cameo. We also hear about gods starting to return. The movie is road trip esk. On their way to find the Black Samurai they run into familiar faces like Xi Wangmu,

the Ring of Gaea, and even have a brush in with the Avengers. The Avengers being led by the Hydra controlled Shield are told that they are planning to destroy Earth and must be stopped. This is the movie’s climax afterwards Lillith is captured and they bring her back to Mikado. Sister Gabby uses her powers to allow them to return. The movie ends with them learning of her returning to life after being executed.

In between movies

After Flynn and Isabeau leave in Civil War they go around helping people across Earth. Isabeau notices a strange golden light flickering in Flynn’s eyes as he starts to gain people’s hopes. His perspective on things starts to change and he starts thinking of the people of Earth more and growing attached to them. He was so focused on the Black Samurai before he had mostly ignored everything else. Without her he’s finally letting himself be enthralled with Earth’s splendor. They actually meet Nanashi and Asahi who are just kids right now.

(Takes place in alongside Infinity War) Phase 3

The Cobalt Samurai: Divided We Fall- After Flynn, Jonathan and Walter get sucked into the reactor they end up traveling to 2 parallel New York’s one of chaos and law. The law one is a dystopia not unlike 1984. The chaos one is marvel zombies. In the alternate worlds they meet alternate versions of the Avengers and fight Lucifer and Merkabah in their respective worlds. After their defeat Jonathan and Walter start to feel strange before they are sucked into the world of the white. The white try to drive Flynn into despair by revealing everything to him and that no matter what choices he makes the world will suffer and he will die. He is nearly taken over before Jonathan and Walter snap him out of it, surprising the white that they are here when they weren’t in the other worlds. They are more surprised when the ghost of Navarre becomes visible and gives Flynn his support. Jonathan and Walter with Lucifer and Merkabah’s powers will Isabeau into being transported to the white realm who also knocks some sense into Flynn. Flynn’s fellows declare that they’ll stay by him and defeat their fates together. Hope starts to overflow within him and Masakado’s katana materializes in his hands simply called “The Godslayer Sword”. Together they all defeat the white and the movie ends with the samurai returning to a post-Infinity War Mikado.

The movies that are altered:

(In Iron Man 2 their presence is mentioned in the movie as the supposed “Angels from the Heavens”.)

Thor-Their is an extra scene with Odin talking to Matrieya and telling him that he is no longer a part of the Divine Powers. Thor overhears this and questions Odin who refuses to elaborate. Matrieya offers Thor to join them and Odin drives him away.

(They are not present but are referenced in Avengers)

Thor: The Dark World-(This movie sucks) So, instead the one trying to get the reality stone is Matrieya who Thor fights. Some of the members of the Divine Powers appear in this movie and Krishna is foreshadowed. Thor finds out earlier about his father’s shady past, but this time it involves the Divine Powers who helped Odin conquer the 9 realms.

Captain America: Winter Soldier-They actually run into each other during the movie and they reveal everything about Tayama and Lillith. They were looking for the ‘face of true evil’ that Lillith told them about. That evil is being done by Hydra who Tayama is a part of in this version. They agree to help out Cap and expose Hydra from within Shield. They find out about all the very messed up things Hydra have done and realize Hydra is the true evil.

(The messiah is mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy)

Guardians of the Galaxy vol2-Ego is in league with the Divine Powers.

Avengers: Age of Ultron-A young Hallelujah appears in this movie alongside Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. The samurai appear and fight the Ultron bots alongside the Avengers. Due to their meeting in their sequel they are acquainted with the Avengers. As things get hairy Nick Fury picks them up and has them join the fight. We find out that currently the were on their way back to Mikado to report to Shene Duke. In the end credits we see the archangels. Hallelujah doesn’t join the Avengers since he’s too young. Like Wanda and Pietro he gets his powers from being experimented on.

Captain America: Civil War-The samurai have completely split off now going their separate ways. We see a flashback of Jonathan and Flynn killing Lillith when Jonathan mentions it. They are dragged into the discussion at the beginning of the movie clearly not on speaking terms with each other especially after Walter hears that they killed Lillith. Isabeau awkwardly shuffled around feeling very nervous and out of place especially with all the tension. After the Sokova Accords are revealed Walter sides with Cap and Jonathan sides with Tony. Jonathan is surprised when Flynn doesn’t take a side simply not seeing it as their problem. Since it isn’t their world anyway. His head seems in the clouds after defeating Lillith and he walks out of the movie with Isabeau following behind them. From there the movie is the same, but with Walter and Jonathan included. They both start to question how they stand as those they favored flipped. Previously Jonathan would favor Cap and Walter would favor Tony. This whole conflict makes them realize things may not be as black and white as they thought.

(Flynn and Isabeau are referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is where it is revealed that they have been going around helping people.)

Thor: Ragnarok-Hella is a part of the Divine Powers and Shesha makes an appearance.

Avengers: Infinity War-Isabeau and Nozomi are in the movie on the Earth team. Isabeau reveals that her fellows have disappeared after going to the reactor. Flynn had convinced her to stay behind because she didn’t really have a stance in the conflict between Jonathan and Walter. Strangely, Flynn appears later in the movie but is acting awfully strange. Isabeau is transported to the white’s world right before the snap. After the snap he takes the gauntlet right off Thanos and Krishna reveals himself. Krishna explains that he allowed Thanos to do the snap on purpose to half the forces of law and chaos. His allies had been transported to another world when the snap happened; ‘Flynn’ even briefly disappeared before returning out of nowhere foreshadowing this. Flynn is revealed to be Shesha who fights Thanos. They are actually pretty even in power, but due to the Avengers wearing down Thanos before he gains the upper hand and defeats him. Krishna gives his salvation speech and Shesha flexes on everybody. He also mentions that his kalki, the true godslayer, will return to Earth.

Avengers: Endgame-Isabeau informs them of the snap. They actually appear after the time skip due to their trio back to Earth being wonky. After seeing even Mikado was ravaged Jonathan further questions his earlier values. We actually see Gaston who is fully grown to his age in Apocalypse. Many of their families were decimated or mostly gone after the snap. This whole thing brings the group even closer. Gaston joins them on their way back to New York. After arriving Toko appears trying to assassinate Flynn. The whole world thinking him and Shesha were the same and he betrayed them. Flynn defeats Toki and they try to convince her that it wasn’t Flynn who took the gauntlet. After her defeat Toki begrudgingly stands down and leaves, however claims she will kill Flynn one day which makes them nervous. They are also joined by Nozomi. Then they join up with the Marvel heroes who are wary at first, but Cap is able to realize that Flynn obviously wasn’t Shesha. They have to track down the Divine Powers who currently possess the stones. Krishna plans to use the stones to get to YHVH’s realm and have Flynn kill him. They fight the rest of the Divine Powers and it is revealed that Walter and Jonathan can transform into Lucifer and Merkabah. After their encounter in the other worlds an incomplete version of their power went into them. They fight Krishna and after seemingly winning Krishna slips into Flynn. Vishnu-Flynn is born and fights everyone after getting through to Flynn on the inside he breaks out and finishes Krishna. They take the infinity stones and restore everyone to normal. The samurai realize that there is a bigger threat and the universe is bigger than they imagined. Thus the samurai split again Flynn and Isabeau while Navarre and Walter depart to space while Jonathan returns to Mikado.

Spider-Man: Far From Home- Nanashi and Asahi are present. In the movie after one of the accidents Nanashi is revived by Dadga. It is also revealed Krishna is still alive and has only been sealed.

Smoke billowed up into the sky. There was so much black smoke. I couldn’t see the stars. “Rina, come. You can’t stay,” A man in a dark cloak lifted me off the ground. His pale skin was shened with sweat and dirt. I looked towards the burning house and the smoke. Where are the others? Where are my parents? Why aren’t they coming with us?     

    “Rin. Rin, get up” a familiar voice rasped. I slowly opened my eyes to see Arthur hovering above me. “Good morning” I whispered. “Morning” he replied, getting off me. I slowly sat up, stretching my tired body, groaning when my back popped. Out of nowhere, a shirt hit me in the face. “Hey!” I pulled the shirt off and studied it. It was clean and that’s all I really care about. Pulling it in, I stood up all the way. I flinched at the cold wood, but ignored it. The shirt covered most of me, like a short dress. One of Arthur’s shirts. Comfy.“Here are the rest of your clothes” Arthur said, handing me a pile of folded pants, and other things. “Thank you” I replayed, kissing his cheek.

          He smirked and said “Be quick, we need to talk to George. You're gonna come with.” My eyes flew to his. I studied his face for any signs he was joking or something.“Seriously?” I questioned, not believing what he was saying. Arthur would rather face 100 men than let me face one. He was protective like that.

               “Yes, so hurry up” he chuckled, and left the room. Holy shit. I quickly got dressed. Arthur never lets me go out with him and the lads on business. He’s always saying he doesn’t want me getting mixed up in that kind of stuff. So, this was a big step for the both of us. I just hope I don’t fuck it up somehow. I meet the other two downstairs. “Good morning, Rin” Back Lack said. “Comin’ with us today?” Wet Stick asked. “Hey boys, yeah, Arthur finally decided to let me out of the house.” They chuckled, having experienced Arthur’s protectiveness of me first hand. “Let’s get going, then” Wet Stick said, leading us to go get Arthur.

            After meeting him outside, we started heading towards George’s place. As we were doing that, the boys made a stop. “Morning, Art” Mike said. Mike was a fur trader. And today was payday. For us. Mike turned around. “All right, Mike,” Arthur said in greetings and started studying Mike’s load of furs. “That’s quite a load, bit bigger than usual,” he said. “Yeah, changed last minute. Just landed on me” Mike replied, seeming a little nervous. The boys and I surrounded him, still checking the load. “ More is better than less,” Arthur said. “More is always better than less, Mike” Back Lack continues. “More is definitely better than less, Mike. You’ve had a result” Wet Stick finished. I watched Arthur step towards Mike, getting in front of him. He got an annoyed look on his face. Hmm. Still a really good look on him. “I’m sorry Art. It won’t happen again. I promise” Mike said, ducking his head. 

               “You’re alright, Mike” I said, stepping forward. He looked at me, almost shocked I was there. “Why have enemies when you can have friends.” I said, but mostly to Arthur. I placed my hand in his. I know this was his work, but I didn't want him to beat Mike. I had met Mike before, and he was smart enough not to ever get chummy with me, so I liked him. Mike pulled out his money and tried to give it to me. “What are you doing, Mike?” Art asked him. “Sharing the wealth” he replied. “Don’t hand it to her Mike. It doesn’t work like that. Give it to Wet Stick.” Arthur pulled me away from him. Mike turned to Back Lack, who was behind him. “I’m Back Lack, what are you giving it to me for?” Back asked. “What was I thinking?” Mike said, getting annoyed.

               “Don’t upset the boss, Mike.” Wet Stick said. “He and his girl don’t handle the money.” “Sorry, it’s been a long day” Mike sassed. I gave him a look. “It’s first thing in the morning, Mike” Back Lack said, voicing my thoughts. After Mike finally gave the money to Wet Stick, we made our leave. “Buy some street etiquette with the change” Wet Sick said, passing Mike. “Change?” Mike questioned, desperate for any money. “There is no change, Mike” Back Lack shot back. “See you later, Mike” I called. “Cheers, Mike!” Arthur yelled, pulling me into his side. “You did good,” he whispered into my hair. “Really, all I did was keep you from hitting that poor man” I teased. Week 2 Reflection

 This weeks lecture discussed concepts of defence in depth, single points of failures, security by design, side channels, Bell Lapadua and Type 1 or 2 errors (there’s probably more but it has slipped my mind and notes). 

Lecture Notes and Comments:

Defence in depth is a solution towards single points of failures as the latter results in a vulnerable system where if a security defence is breached, then the system is compromised. By utilising defence in depth, multiple security defence mechanisms can be developed such that even if one fails, there are many back ups that continue to maintain the system. 

A good example is a Castle, surrounded by an inner wall, surrounded by a moat, which is surrounded by an outer wall and both walls are mounted by archers. Thus attackers must go through multiple defences before reaching the centre of the castle. Security by Design also encourages systems to be more secure as systems are designed with security in mind and thus allows modifications for more complex defence mechanisms. 

Side Channels is a method of breaching a system without exploiting it’s vulnerability. Simply, it’s just deciphering the message.

Bell Lapadua is also how you classify the privacy of an object or subject. Mostly used in military.

Type 1 and 2 errors are essentially false positive and false negatives where we want to aim to reduce false positives rather than false negatives. I personally look at the standpoint from a legal system where I’d rather see a criminal go free than an innocent bystander being jailed. It is more of a concern especially with countries with death penalties where individuals who were wrongfully convicted still suffered a death sentence and thus there were big public outrages once it was revealed that the individual was actually innocent. It is also the preferred perspective used in businesses however overall, it is very ethically debatable. 

Lecture Reflection:

Richard Buckland’s mention of paper shredding got me thinking that if government departments all paper shred confidential documents, couldn’t someone dig through the recycling bin at the end of the day and piece together the documents? But then it would probably be very pointless because either the document is out of date or there would be so many strips of paper in the bin that it would almost be impossible to piece together the document together.

Other than that not much to say this weeks lecture. I just hope my proxmark device for my something awesome arrives before the 24th of June otherwise I’m gonna face some difficulties next weekend...

Tutorial Case Study Houdini Spiritualism:

Houdini vs Spiritualism was a pretty interesting topic and I was surprised that this discussion managed to actually take up the entire tutorial time. It does raise many issues mentioned during the lecture such as Side Channels and Defence in Depth where we must always consider what if one if the defence mechanisms was compromised. In this example, what if the medium was actually able to decipher the method used by Houdini and his wife to determine if the medium is authentic. 

My group seriously struggled with this idea as we weren’t able to think of anything and we soon realised that the more complex our patterns become, the more impractical it becomes. This was also pointed out by the class when we were discussing our idea. I also mentioned two way authentication inspired by the wargame movie with the two security guards turning the keys at the same time to trigger the launch sequence, and also google’s multi factor authentication system where both parties should be able to identify whether or not the pattern is understood rather than a lucky guess. This of course does not deal with the previous issue and in fact increased it due to the fact that if a single version of the password is compromised, then it becomes a single point of failure and thus the medium could easily authenticate the wife’s password as well. However, if there are multiple patterns, it becomes so complicated that the wife might not be able to solve it. 

I did think of public key authentication but I couldn’t see how it would be applied to the actual case study until Hayden mentioned that it could be done simply if Houdini deciphered his wife’s public key with his private key. Hence maybe I don’t actually know how public key authentication works. May have to do more research into it.

 TL;DR - Interesting topic where security obscurity is not actually good and thus made it very hard to think of something practical. Public key encryption is the way to go (one of them at least).

Homework:

UNSW EMAIL-

An effective email should be straight forward where it identifies what issues that has occurred and what students or staff should expect out of such issues. It should also state what are the plans that it has undertaken to resolve this issue and what measures they have already done to prevent such issues. A major flaw in the UNSW email is that they mentioned that students and staff could easily prevent such issue by not giving away their university details and UNSW would never send emails asking for username and password. This is false because our identity management system resets our password every half a year and that in itself asks us for a password. Rather saying that, UNSW could provide more practical tips such as how to monitor your internet history and how you distribute your information. 

Furthermore, the UNSW email should outline the main assets that they are concerned about. This will allow both students and staff to understand exactly where the concern is when it comes to securing their accounts. For example, UNSW wishes students do not provide any of their University details to services outside of Australia, especially their student ID and password as it could result in an international breach, similarly to what ANU had experienced.

Potential targets include individuals like Student Researcher on political discourse in China or potential liberal politicians etc. Rather just using our information such as addresses and personal things, they could also monitor our career progress and could intervene in our life if we seem interesting enough to the Chinese government or military.

Paper shredding analysis-

I would personally burn it rather than use a paper shredder but if thats not possible, and I’m limited on resources, I would soak the paper in water and then shred it as the water can mix up the ink making it harder to piece it together. Water is also easily accessible whilst burning something may not.

If the index of coincidence is closer to 0.1, then it could use a monoalphabetic substitution or transposition cipher while if it’s further, it is a polyalphabetic cipher. However, since the provided texts could be potentially encrypted, we must calculate the index of coincidence and see which one is actually encrypted  by a mono-alphabetic substitution cipher or transposition cipher. 

A tip given by Hayden is that instead of counting the index of coincidence, count the number of vowels in the ciphered text. If there seems to be a pattern, it is a transposition cipher, otherwise it is substitution.

Blend in - Criminals may go for properties where wealth is clearly displayed. Humans love to push big red buttons. Blend in to avoid unneeded attention.

How to help journalists

One idea may be to improve the way sources can send information to journalists. International media companies use tools such as WhatsApp, Signal, Tor etc while ABC currently has a web form. Perhaps this is an area for improvement.

A: How did you come up with the title to [insert fic]?

Updated: I like clear and snappy titles that hold some relevance to a BTS reference or a key item/plot point in the story, punny titles that have multiple meanings, and parallel structure! Here are some examples!

Clear / snappy: Matchmaker is simply the name of the dating app that OC, Yoongi, and Jin are developing, but I like that it also has a twist when it comes to who is doing the matchmaking / who the matches are. Other examples: Shirt is literally about OC returning Yoongi’s shirt; Blackout is literally about meeting Jungkook during a city-wide blackout, though there’s also a little bit of a pun there in that it happens on a day that OC would rather forget initially.

Punny: Bear with Me is play on words in that Jimin x Red are figuring out how to address their relationship to one another as they make some big life choices, one of which is literally deciding to have a child together lol. Also, Countermelody represents multiple things: the undercurrent that supports the melody in a song, which represents OC’s shifting goals and perspective on life, as well as Yoongi, Namjoon, and Hobi’s shifting roles in their producer work, which are also more supportive roles to the main star in Jimin; the general trend for OC to feel like an underrated character in her own life; and the fact that OC literally works the counter at Yoongi’s favorite stationery shop, and that is where they meet, which is how Yoongi is able to help her fulfill her goals in an unexpected way! Another example: Idol Hands is about an actress OC who starts romantic entanglements with Idol Namjoon and Idol Jungkook, but she’s also on the brink of her retirement, so it’s a play on the saying, “Idle hands are the devil's playthings”.

Clear / snappy + parallel: Hideaway is literally based on the fact that Jin is retreating to his hideaway to avoid a new responsibility... though there’s... also a bit of a pun there in that a secret love comes to light... hmm... maybe they’re all punny. Anyway! The sequels all have “away” in them as well: Breakaway for Jimin, Faraway for Jungkook, and the planned sequels for the others will have that structure as well. Other examples: the sequels to Clink will also be one-word “link”-based words, called Blink and Link; the sequel to Hold the Door will be another three-word, door-related title, called Knock Three Times, and oh my god I think way too much about titles.

I shared some fave writers in this post! 

Making connections with fic writers who like to experiment with things has been such a powerful thing for me! I’ve mentioned Roomie / @mochilatae​​ already, but one really cool writer she collabs with is @purgatorywriter​! They both write beautiful oneshots and series, and they do these really fun drabble battles on Twitter and Tumblr from time to time -- check them out and see how they inspire each other to create moments equally steamy and meaningful!

Another fave writer whom I really love is @vyduan​! She writes with such heart, and I really, really dig the way she experiments with tone and structure! Check out An Economy of Words for an example of that experimentation, and check out her whole masterlist for some amazing treats!

And I know I mentioned how Shenee from Grown Ass Fandom has been a great writer to chat with, so you need to check out her ao3 fic WIP, Questions! You get a great feel for her ability to light a spark between people, and it pales in comparison only to her own spark as a wonderful writer, great content creator, and amazing friend!

V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

Oooooooh, this is interesting! There’s this really great fic, we go down together by brightlight on ao3! It’s a Namjoon x Jungkook fic, and Namjoon teaches Jungkook how to smoke weed for the first time. I read it when I was starting to get back into fanfic through becoming ARMY, and that story has really stuck with me. 

I think I’d write a sort of mishmash of a sequel and prequel that looks at the encounter from Jungkook’s perspective, peppering in flashback moments where Jungkook was watching the rest of the group’s interactions, slowly starting to build up his curiosity about weed, and then finally gathering up the courage to ask his hyung about it... then finding himself in that moment with Namjoon, and choosing to go with the energy between them.
