Navarre Introduction

A (former) samurai of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado who fought alongside Flynn and the others and was once one of the Luxurors within the upper echelons of society. However, after fleeing due to dirtying the family name and escaping safely to Tokyo, he lost his life to something trivial. Having become a green spirit with no corporeal form, he happens to meet Nanashi, and joins him. He has the same excessive pride he had during his lifetime, and cowardice inversely proportional to that pride.

Commentary by Masayuki Doi

A wholly green presence who brings about harmony. Well, that’s too much of an excuse after-the-fact (laughs), but don’t you think that as a result, the meaning of the color of Navarre’s scarf was realized in this title? The creation of a ghost was present since our first draft, and we were set on making him a partner as well. Given that, we wanted to have him be dragged around with the movement of the map, and to be floating around at the protagonist’s side, so we created a mascot-like design. I’m glad we were able to reintroduce him as such a beloved character (laughs).

Kurokami was curious. Nozomi wasn’t one to snap at empty air like that. Or at anything, really. She was nothing but kind to everyone, man or Demon.

Asahi’s face turned in confusion to the elder Hunter. “Who… are you talking to?”

Nozomi opened her mouth, then closed it. She looked at Nanashi as if asking a silent question, one she had seen on other’s faces before.

”Do you want to tell her this?”

Nanashi sighed deeply, looking in the same place that Nozomi was arguing in. “Yeah, there’s this ghost thing that’s been following us since Flynn- (Nozomi's eyes widened in recognition at the name, before schooling back into a neutral expression) -saved our asses. He says his name is Navarre, but…“

Whatever the child said next faded into white noise as the Name echoed in her mind.

Navarre. She could laugh.

Could it be?

One activation of The World later, and she was in front of the spot where Nozomi and Nanashi looked.

Names have power. To speak someone’s Name is to beckon their very soul to do one’s bidding. It is something intrinsic to a person's being. It is why she could use the power at The World’s fingertips so brazenly. She had heard this instance’s Navarre speak his Name already. He was ready and willing to say it in Flynn’s presence, after all. Going so far as to say that it was the third time he had said it, as if he wouldn’t have to introduce himself to every one of his peers that day regardless.

So when she spoke his Name, a small glimmer of light flashed into view. A bright, lime green. She spoke it again, and-

She couldn’t help but giggle.

He was the size of her fist, with a pudgy body and an oversized head, he looked distinctive enough. The previously described pompadour was the same color as the rest of him. She cupped a hand underneath his tiny feet, falsely supporting the outraged spirit. Ah, but there was the ongoing issue. And she surely would be noticed if she kept calling out Navarre’s name every few moments…

Hmmm…

She could try direct interfacing, but that requires a lot of concentration, an unconscious person, and time to be in motion. She could try verbal acknowledgment, but that would require striding a line she does not want to cross.

Quite a dilemma…

She glanced towards the Shade of The World, who had taken upon itself to admire the enormous cherry tree.

Now that’s an idea.

She would have to do them both at once, and while the other remained incredibly invasive, even more so than she wished, it still remained her best option. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time she used a stand untested.

She focused, drawing upon the well of power within her, and began forming another Shade.

“Rohan Kishibe’s Heaven's Door.” She called.

The shade shaped itself into a small, cloaked boy with an exaggerated top hat. She wasted no time in showing the Shade its target.

She twirled a nib pen in one hand, and watched as the spirit's face cracked into two pieces, then fluttered open like the pages of a book. Actually, it was exactly like that. Yellowed parchment under a leathery green cover.

Unlike the Stand's original user, she did not peruse the bevy of information. She respected personal boundaries enough to not read their entire life story. She merely scanned the pages, only taking in the format. Unsurprisingly, the book that is Navarre was formatted like an exceptionally dense Japanese literary work. It had some illustrations, but all of them were so embellished as to be nearly unrecognizable to their true counterparts. She continued skimming, looking for an open spot while repeating his Name every few seconds to keep him visible.

“Ah, there we are.” She muttered. She carefully wrote a single sentence on the parchment.

Will be able to be seen and heard by the ones Named Kurokami, Kuma, and Kuzé.

Commands written down in a persons book would be etched onto their very soul; unable to be disobeyed at any point of their life. Of course, Navarre did not even know he was hiding himself from her, but it would be made so nonetheless.

She swiftly closed the book and dismissed the second Stand. The “cover” quickly reformed back into the outraged face of the now-visible ghost.

She would have done it any other way, but she truly could not do anything else. Possibly, going forward, she could pretend she does not see him…? Yes, that could work. Though, he could be hard to ignore…

Well, she’ll cross that bridge when she gets to it.

She made her way back to Nanashi, who was in the middle of jabbing a thumb at Navarre with an exasperated look. Sparing a glance at his phone, she remembered her audience.

She bowed at the device. “We apologize for the interruption, High King, we merely had to rectify an issue. Thank you for your patience.”

Kurokami returned to the boy’s shadow, The World was dismissed, and time resumed its flow.

Nanashi was continuing to tell Asahi about the antics the former Samurai would get up to, with Navarre providing scathing commentary. It wasn’t lost on her how he flinched as soon as she finished her work, but she assumed it was the effects of Heaven's Door taking hold.

The Great Spirit of Void laughed at Asahi’s later remark, stating Nanashi’s status as a purported ‘Ghost Magnet.’ Please, everyone knows that all good omens come in threes and not twos.
