at the end of the day, for me, the most disappointing thing about C3 isn't the poor narrative structure, the bad pacing where everything feels dragged out and rushed at the same time, or never giving the characters the space and focus to breathe and develop their own centric subplots

it is ultimately that Marquet started off very strong as a setting and did feel like it was making strides to properly draw from its Asian and SWANA inspirations, including with good use of work by other authors and consultants, only for that to rapidly fall off as the Ruidus plot became central and for there to be just as little space for Marquet as there was for Bells Hells as characters beyond carriers of The Moon Plot, with no space to develop and explore either to potential and richness. It's disappointing for Marquet especially, given the continued dearth of Asian and SWANA inspirations in Western AP, and I felt C3 started off promising with Marquet as a grounded and rich location in those inspirations.

I think a lot about Ela Lumas, whose sons' murders is the inciting incident, and how her title Ginang is a Tagalog word and how exciting that was for me personally. The fact that we lost this even as smaller notes, and that ultimately Marquet was supplanted in favor of Vasselheim (not even Issylra as a whole) and Ruidus without any real grounding of why Marquet was the setting in the first place or what Marquet's importance was specifically to the narrative other than "it has to be set somewhere", is just so intensely disappointing to me. The biggest disappointment I have with C3.

Writing this down before I forget:

Vincent's great niece, name to be decided, gets away from her designated babysitter and toddles up to Tito Tomas while he's reading the Gospel for that day's Mass.

She's about 2 and a half at this point, but surprisingly well behaved for a tot. She just wants to cling to one of her favorite uncles and has fisted her tiny hands near the bottom part of his robes.

Tito Tomas doesn't miss a beat. He smiles and just gently puts down a hand to caress her head.

Vincent, sitting in the papal throne near the altar, also smiles and beckons to her and she toddles over to her other favorite uncle and eventually settles on his lap so they can listen.

People laugh softly at the rapt expression on her little face as she first listens to Tito Tomas and then, later, to Tito Papa Enteng as he delivers his homily.

She happily goes with Tito Tomas when it's Tito Papa Enteng's turn to take the mic for that homily and can be seen mouthing the ritual Latin words along with him when he ends it.

Those in the crowd who can hear her baby voice are charmed and amused. She obviously hasn't got all the words yet (and she's growing up around adults with a LOT of different languages) but she's close enough and will eventually get there.

Look, she regularly makes the internet explode with cuteness. I need a name for her though - I had one in mind but I feel like a change is better. Any ideas?

Characters who know both Clark Kent and Superman, especially Lois, are classically given grief for not figuring out that Clark is just Superman wearing glasses. Have any of them ever used the 'celebrity look alike' defence? That people with no genetic relationship whatsoever looking a whole lot alike or even exactly alike is a thing that happens as a matter of coincidence.

I can't speak for canon so I don't know if anyone's used the "celebrity look alike" defense exactly. I don't personally agree with takes where people like Lois are devastated that they didn't realize it's just "Superman plus glasses" and how obvious it was. Maybe it's because I look exactly like another person, and have been mistaken for tons of other people but. It's way more common than people give it credit for.

A friend of mine put it really well when paraphrasing an old tumblr post: If you worked at a grocery store with a guy who looks exactly like Barack Obama down to the detail- you wouldn't think that's actually the 44th president of the US (moonlighting as a grocery store employee for some reason?). You'd think "dang that guy looks like the president. How about that!" especially when the guy acts nothing like the president. Context is key.

I think it also speaks to Clark's ability to code switch into being a regular mild-mannered guy on the job. Would Lois be shocked to learn that Superman is Clark Kent? Yeah, ideally she should be (I hate you forever MAWS)! Should she be devastated that she didn't realize he just put on glasses? Nah. Because it's not just the glasses.
