Welcome to Science Genius Girl Showdown, where your favorite she/her scientists go head to head to see who is the smartest* of them all!
*=SGGShowdown is not an accurate assessment of character intelligence.
Submit your Science Genius Girls here! Submissions will remain open until July 30th! Due to the high number of submissions received shortly upon making the blog, submissions will now be closing on July 20th! Submissions are now officially closed! Preliminaries are planned to be held over the next couple days, and the bracket itself is planned to be announced on July 22nd or 23rd!
Some rules, guidelines, and disclaimers before getting started!
The bracket is aimed to be announced on August 1st or 2nd! Due to the high number of submissions received shortly upon making the blog, the projected date for the bracket reveal is now July 22nd or 23rd!
Depending on how many unique submissions are made, this bracket may have 16, 32, or 64 participants! If more scientists are submitted past that, there's the potential that a second bracket may be held, though that's not guaranteed. Due to the high number of submissions received shortly upon making the blog, the bracket will now contain 128 participants! Rounds 1 and 2 will be split into 1A/1B and 2A/2B respectively. Starting with round 3 there will no longer be a split. This is to avoid mod getting overwhelmed with sorting through 64 polls worth of propaganda all at once, but I'm sorry for the inconvenience!
This bracket will generally work off of a weekly format, though exceptions may be made for special outliers.
While SGGShowdown understands that trashtalking is part of the bracket experience, please try to keep it respectful! Mod reserves the right to block voters for being too rowdy or disqualify participants if their supporters cause too much of a ruckus. This is mainly intended to be a celebration of girl scientists in media, so aim to keep the mood light!
Real people and OCs will not be accepted, and while no fandoms will be banned outright, mod reserves the right to exclude characters that they believe may cause unnecessary drama or they personally take issue with.
In order to have as much fandom diversity as possible, mod will be limiting the number of participants from a fandom to one (or two if there's enough submissions for the bracket to feature 64 participants.) Due to the high influx of submissions received shortly upon making the blog, this bracket will now feature a fandom cap of 3! If you'd like to submit multiple characters from a piece of media, you might have a better time getting the girls into the bracket if you submit them as a single participant! As an example, if you'd like to submit multiple girls from the same property that are all part of their school's science club, you could submit them as [School]'s Science Club rather than submitting them as five individuals. If multiple girls are submitted from the same property, 1 day preliminaries may be held to determine which will make it into the bracket proper.
While genius is right there in the name, science is far more the focus of this poll! As long as your girl's interest in science is one of her main character traits, she may be implemented even if she's not the brightest! Mod is an avid fan of failgirls, so there's no need to worry about your character being smart enough to be accepted!
In a similar vein, while mod supports smart girls from all walks of life, this is a poll about scientists first and foremost. Authors and literaries are fantastic, but we're specifically shooting for women in STEM here!
That being said, the science your girl specializes in does not necessarily have to be one that exists in the real world! If your girl is in a setting where magical or otherwise fantastical setting and her field of study centers around something unique to the setting, she may also be accepted! As long as they have the science girl vibe, they may be accepted!
SGGShowdown is the first tournament that mod has hosted, so I'd like to ask for your understanding if any missteps or mistakes are made along the way.
The askbox is open if you have any questions you'd like to ask me, though I will note that questions such as "How many submissions do you have for [character]?" or "Will [character] be making it into the bracket?" will be deleted. "How many submissions do you have for [fandom]?" will be permitted due to the cap, but please search to see if that question has already been addressed.
Here's some specific tags this blog intends to make use of!
"#SGGShowdown Polls" - A general tag used on every poll across the bracket's rounds.
"#SGGShowdown Round [Number]" - Used to indicate what round of the bracket a poll is a part of.
"#SGGShowdown [Participant] Propaganda" - Used so all the propaganda for a participant may be found in the same place.
"#SGGShowdown Fanart" - Used as a general tag for fanart that is either submitted or directly mentions the blog upon being posted. "#SGGShowdown [Participant] Fanart" will also be used so all the fanart for a participant may be found in the same place.
"#SGGShowdown Speaks" - A general tag used for all mod posts.
"#SGGShowdown Announcements" - Used for mod posts that are related to the state of the bracket itself, such as if the bracket will take a short hiatus or any future rule updates. This tag will also be used to give a warning if mod believes that any participant's supporters are flying a bit too close to the sun with their type of propaganda, so try to keep a close eye on it if you can!
"#SGGShowdown Off Topic" - Used for mod posts that aren't important announcements related to the bracket itself, such as jokes regarding submissions or answers to questions that aren't directly related to how the bracket is being ran.
#SGGShowdown Signal Boost" - Used for mod reblogs that are promoting other tournament blogs.
Finally, some tagging and inspirations in the hopes of spreading the word around! Don't feel like you have to reblog, of course!

Honestly I've already gotten way more submissions than I thought I would and it's only been two hours... Might end up cutting the submission time by a bit and hosting a second season sooner than I expected... Either that or I might bump the number of participants to 128 (maybe with a new fandom cap of 3?) and split the bracket into left and right sides...

Would once again like to apologize for the delay! Life has been really hectic for the past couple of days, but I'm trying my damnedest to get this out for y'all! Once four SGGs have been chosen from the DC preliminary and Marvel preliminary I'll be trying to get the bracket up by the 28th! Currently the plan is for the first half of polls for Round 1 to go up on August 1st, so take that time to prepare all the propaganda and voters you can!

Hey so unfortunately I was having a bit of a Real Life moment the past couple days so I haven't really been able to work on poll things, I deeply apologize! I don't know if I'll be able to work on poll things tomorrow since I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up having to take care of some stuff all day, but I'll try my best to get the bracket announced by the 25th! I've looked through all the submissions and I believe I won't actually need to do any preliminaries, so I should hopefully be able to post the bracket without worrying about any of that! Just in case I'm mistaken and preliminaries do have to be held, the bracket will be postponed until the 26th so preliminaries can be held on the 25th!

Submissions are officially closed! I'll spend the next couple days sorting through them (and throwing up preliminaries for certain SGGs), so please look forward to the main event!

So uh while the site explodes due to Tumblr desperately trying to draw in more people that fled to Twitter once the porn ban happened, I'd like to remind everyone that the deadline for Science Genius Girl submissions has been adjusted to tomorrow due to the influx of submissions! If you'd like to see your SGG compete, please submit them to this form by midnight CST tomorrow night!
Also, since I've had a couple people confused about this, SGGs are solely meant to be submitted through the form! Thankfully, all the SGGs that have been sent in as asks instead have been submitted by someone else in the form itself, but please don't send submissions into my askbox! It'd make my life a whole lot easier for all the SGGs to be i the same place, plus there's some extra things I'd like to know that are only mentioned in the form itself.

Regarding the "If you would like for mod to use any specific images, please send them as an ask!" listed in the form, should we wait for you to confirm that our submission made it through before sending you images? Or can we send them right away?
I'd ask for you to go ahead and send them, yes! If you have a link to the image, you may also include it within the response to that question in the submission form!

Can we submit Genderfluid Science Geniuses?
I'd say my stance is that, if a character wouldn't mind being referred to as a girl at least part of the time, they're definitely permitted! Speaking from the perspective of a nonbinary person (though not specifically a genderfluid person) I know I wouldn't be the most comfortable if I myself was submitted to an explicitly gendered poll like this, but I know that that take won't be the same for everyone! So if a character is generally comfortable with being lumped in with women then I wouldn't have an issue with it at all! If their preference when it comes to how they're acknowledged is vague, I may open up a preliminary asking for voters familiar with them their thoughts on whether it'd be respectful to the character for them to be included.
I will add that, with the current number of unique submissions already nearing the 128 limit with the submission period still having a ways to go, there's a chance that they may be one of the characters that doesn't make the cut in the end. If they don't, please know that it's not because of any phobic sentiments on mod's part! While I'd love to include every character sent to me, at the end of the day some will be facing the chopping block. If I do decide to run another SGGShowdown bracket sometime after this one ends, I'm like, 99% sure that I'll make it so characters that were solely rejected from the first bracket due to being at capacity would take up the first however many slots of the second bracket.
With all that being said, I'd definitely submit them if you think they wouldn't mind being a part of something like this! I'm worried it may sound like I'm already planning on rejecting them, but I promise that's not the case! I haven't decided exactly how I'll be picking which valid submissions get to be in the limited number of slots and which don't yet, so I just wanted to get that little disclaimer out of the way!
#SGGShowdown Speaks#SGGShowdown Announcements#The current plan is to have the format of every poll mention Science Genius Girl somewhere within the post.#Not exactly sure how yet but like#I wouldn't feel great about having the post say smth like “Who should be Tumblr's Science Genius Girl?”#only for one of the characters to not be comfortable with being called a girl you know?#Also for a certain set of characters (I am thinking about one in particular here but I won't say a name to avoid showing bias)#where there's like different possibilities for them but they're still distinctly the same character#and in one or more possibilities they're not a woman#I personally will be avoiding using images of them from the possibility where they're not a woman#and I'd generally recommend not propagandizing using information from the possibilities where they're not a woman#but they're still totally fine to be submitted!#If it's a case like a character starting the series off as a woman but later on transitions to a man or something like that#with absolutely no substantial (canon) examples of alternate timelines where that's not the case#the character will be rejected.#I know some media has situations like multiple endings where no one ending is considered the “canon” one where this can get messy#but just generally I'd like for winning SGGShowdown to be something fans of a character can be proud of instead of smth to feel awkward abt#Tags ended up running a bit long but the words just kept tumbling out lmao.#I hope this all makes sense! I just don't want to end up offending anyone accidentally or anything like that.

...can i submit a medical doctor?
Medical doctors are absolutely fine! Though as a general rule, if you put the "Hi, I'm Natasha, an underworld doctor" or whatever Honkai ad in my submissions, I've been granted legal immunity! So you should watch your back as I will be coming to assassinate you!

Also to address this very quickly, if anyone has submit images through my ask box for their character or otherwise further specified things regarding their Science Genius Girl in there, don't worry about me not answering them! I'm leaving them in my askbox so I can quickly search through them later if they're included in the poll!

Is Teto automatically included because she's your pfp or should we still submit her?
Truthfully speaking I chose Pathological Facade's Teto and Roco Handa's SSR5 from The iDOLM@STER Million Live Theater Days for my layout as I feel like neither of them would make for particularly good participants seeing as, as far as I know, Pathological Facade is an entirely standalone song and Teto's use in it is more reflective of her as a mascot instead of her as a character and Roco is a case of a nonscientist character getting a scientist aesthetic for a small piece of content. I worry that having any actual participants on the layout would potentially cause concerns of mod bias and the like.
So essentially, it's the opposite of her being automatically included. I feel like having Teto be in the running wouldn't really be particularly fitting since she's never really been a character heavily associated with science outside of being used in MVs for certain science related songs as one would with vocal synths. This isn't to say that vocal synths in general are disbarred, more just that I would prefer for the science stuff to be part of their established character instead of a one-off thing.
In general I'd say my policy with vocal synths is:
If submitting a vocal synth itself, please only submit synths where the character itself is associated with science in some way, like how MAYU has her horror theme.
If submitting the vocal synth's appearance in a specific song, please only submit the character they're singing to represent, like how Len was used as the basis for Allen in The Evillious Chronicles.
If the synth's appearance in a specific song seems more incidental due to their bank being used in the song, such as Teto's appearance in Pathological Facade, rather than being representative of a character being established by the Producer, chances are they'll be getting rejected.
Sorry for any confusion this may have caused! I just don't think it'd necessarily be fair to do something like "Oh, well a Producer used Miku as a mascot for their song about science, so Miku can be submitted as a scientist!" when nothing about Miku's character at large is really reflective of that. I will note that characters from one of the projects Ghost is involved with may be considered for entry, such as Mariyam from Team 6x111's Qualia Automata series or any of the other science girls he's had a part in, but Teto is not up for consideration at the moment.

Do forensic girls count? Like Temperance Brennan from bones?
Forensics girls definitely count! As long as they're like, forensic sciences and not the debate and forensics kind. I haven't personally seen Bones, but from what I've gathered via cultural osmosis I don't see any reason why Miss Bone herself wouldn't qualify!

Update: I did end up going through with this! TL;DR is:
The bracket will now contain 128 participants instead of a maximum of 64.
The first and second rounds will be done in halves.
The submission deadline is now July 20th instead of July 30th.
The bracket is planned to be announced on July 22nd or 23rd instead of August 1st or 2nd.
The fandom cap is now 3 instead of 1 or 2.
As a bonus, if any voters would like to ask about what fictional scientists the mod would allow to conduct unethical human experimentation on them, the ask box is open and a masterpost may be made! Keep in mind that, while this is a tournament about scientist women, the mod is NBLM, so any questions regarding this subject should feature men or else you'll get a stock standard "Mod is not attracted to women" answer.
