As a late diagnosed Audhd girl, this is something I think about often.

I was a really well-behaved kid for the most part, and generally didn't have a lot of issues with getting told off when it was just my mum and I because we could always understand one another. That all changed the second I had new parental figures enter my life, who seemed to operate on a bunch of unspoken rules that I had never heard of but constantly seemed to break.

The two biggest ones that I remember still affecting me even when I was in high school (which often brought me to literal tears from the sheer frustration) was being repeatedly accused of "giving excuses" when I was asked why I did whatever the argument was about, and for "rolling [my] eyes" at my Dad when I swore I wasn't.

Being asked why you did something would logically mean explaining your thought process to the person who asked you that, right? So when I'd repeatedly get told off for "giving excuses" when I'd respond to that question with my thought process, I ended up viewing the question as a trap and then getting distressed that my parent seemingly wanted me to fall for said trap so they had an excuse to tell me off. I know now that wasn't the case, but at the time, I ended up having to learn to calculate my responses because I didn't trust my parents to have good intentions towards me anymore. And that just made me aware/afraid that all children are only treated with respect so long as they continuously tick the seemingly arbitrary boxes their parents give them.

I actually only found out recently that "rolling your eyes" doesn't always mean literally making a circular motion with your eyes, but can refer to looking upwards/to the side if the eye movement is considered to be done out of exasperation/a reaction to what someone said. I've always struggled with eye contact and conflict, so any timeI was in trouble or having a tense conversation would inevitably result in my eyes constantly shifting around the room while I tried to gather my thoughts and regulate my emotions. I'd then get told off for being disrespectful for rolling my eyes, when I was actively trying to avoid doing anything that could be seen as disrespectful (speaking without thinking first, being too emotional etc).

Turns out I'm AuDHD. A huge stereotype with autistic kids is eye contact avoidance, and yet no one picked up on my struggles with it, and my parents instead made it an even bigger complex for me because I was repeatedly yelled at for somehow doing it the wrong way, without them explaining how.

And im actually pretty damn lucky in the parent department, all things considered. But even my parents who did their best to teach me about fairness, to treat others with kindness/that abuse is wrong, and to stand up for myself/my beliefs would still regularly reinforce some kinda fucked up ideals about children's autonomy and respect on their neurodivergent kid.

When you're autistic, it's impossible to miss how much society normalizes child abuse.

I could dedicate my entire life to studying how to interact with people and I'd still never master the social skills that young children are expected to have on command.

Say the wrong thing? That's disrespectful and you're punished. And you don't even have to actually say anything wrong. Pretty much anything you say can be considered "giving lip" if your parent wants some excuse to punish you. But if you say nothing, then you get punished for ignoring. You also have to calculate your response to their mind game quickly because taking too long to respond is considered ignoring. Also, if you're being wrongly accused of something, saying nothing is considered a confession. And even if you somehow manage to say exactly what your parent wants in exactly the correct tone, they'll still punish you for "sarcasm" or "not really meaning it".
