Or- a lot better actually. Especially without any prophecies breathing down his neck [he has a feeling Percy could relate with that last bit]

Idea for an AU: Umetsuba but they are roomates.

Umemiya is studying political science at university, living in a small two-person apartment until Higarii has to move back home because he plans to quit his degree. Now, the rent that two people used to pay has to be paid by one, which is complicated with a minimum wage in multiple jobs.

Tsubaki, by the other hand, is studying performing art and the situation with his parents is tense. Really tense. And he doesn't want to bother the old couple that let him be himself, besides, he has some money for his night work at the bar.

They ended up meeting eachother thanks to Kotoha, and, until Tsubaki finds a better place, they start living together (besides, they assist at the same university, so it's a win-win situation)

NOW THAT I HAVE YOUR ATENTION, HEAR ME OUT, THIS IS IMPORTANT:

Tsubaki isn't 'out' when he meet with Umemiya. Since he lived with his parents and had several arguments about dressing as a woman or painting his nails, he prefers to "pretend" indoors (like in canon, he actually want to have his hair long and his nails pretty, but usually uses men's clothing)

Umemiya finds out when he does laundry, because he sometimes finds women's clothes among Tsubaki's clothes (he was told NOT TO wash Tsubaki's pile, but he is too nice to let him do that, besides, Tsubakino usually returns tired from the job and he needs his clothes clean)

Ume is actually pretty cool with it, and doesn't say anything about it because he is a gentleman, but Tsubaki's pissed because he isn't saying anything. He was always on guard, on his parents house, on the streets, the job, he cannot understand why Umemiya isn't saying shit about this, why isnt he crashing out about "the crossdressed freak living with him".

The situation turns tense when Tsubaki returns home from his job and finds Umemiya (who usually is sleeping) baking brownies because he lost the control of his life.

He doesn't say anything about the skirt or the high heels, Ume just smiles and says "do you want one?"

In that moment, Tsubaki's patience FINALLY breaks and ask him why the hell he isn't freak out about all that.

Ume just says that he is cool with it, and that he respects Tsubakino preference for woman's clothes, and that if HE is happy with it, he would be there to support him. And then, the silence invaded the apartment, until Tsubaki starts to cry.

That's when Tsubaki starts to feel at home, and exclaims to Umemiya that he's actually glad he agreed to live together until they finish college. They ended up on the couch eating brownies at two in the morning watching Sherlock (BBC) online.

There's some ideas I have to this AU, feel free to use it if you want to (only tag me to read it):

- Ume dyeing Tsubaki's hair

- They having they first kiss

- Higarii returning to the house and thinking "damn, these bitches gay, good for them, good for them-"

- Sakura, the young next-door neighbor, thinks they are in a relationship until he discovers that they are actually just good friends/buddies/roomates/collages/anything but lovers

- Ume confronting Sugichi because he is a disgusting piece of sh- (for the record: this is the bastard who calls Umemiya a lameass and fights with Tsubaki)

- Tsubaki being jealous of a girl who talks with Ume (later he finds out that its only Mizuki, Umemiya's classmate)

- Did already mention Sugichi being punched in the face? Well, do it again.

- Ume trying to understand his own feelings ("ARE YOU INTENTIONALLY DENSE???" <-Sakura or Kotoha / "HUH?" <-Ume (he isn't))

- Ume falling in love first but don't doing anything because the situation would be weird for them because they only know since a couple of weeks.

- Tsubaki feeling jealous about a girl that Ume meet in classes (this one is actually for real, but it could be angst because of all the "im not a girl and it would be weird, but my feelings for him still there" thing) and Kotoha/Sakura/Shizuka it's his 'shoulder to cry'

- Shizuka knowing Umemiya for the first time

- Ume going to Tsubaki's job and meeting Shizuka and Kanji (they are embarassing Tsubaki, Shizuka isn't doing on purpose, Kanji on the other hand-)

- Ume ACTUALLY being jealous of the twins (he isn't really sure about which one is his target but he has the spirit) (?)

original firebug dr was actually a fever dream. it was a better cr that i heavily fixated on throughout freshman year of high school. it took place in a major, quite historical city on the east coast, except i scripted near constant cosmic peril to befall us. dark, grungy, thrilling, inspired by the batman (because that movie literally altered the culture, 2022 was crazy). this is what my currently current superhero dr is based on. scripted my hallway crush wanted to talk to me and that i never fell over when a public bus moved.

helloo since we're on the topic: top historical fiction (or adjacent) ? can be any time period I just really love your taste in shows/games/etc and am always on the lookout for history inspired media !

ancient times: i havent really watched a lot of movies/series set in ancient times so far :(

rome HBO (2005-2007) (tv series) - OF COURSE. i personally think its one of the best series ever made. they combine political, miliatry history with the lives of every day people in an incredible way. they never let you once engage with the series through modern lenses. according to my teacher (a historian, archeologist & self described 'romaphile') its incredibly historically accurate, mostly the clothing, set designs, characterization, military practices, etc. except for the things they straight up made up, of course.

i really enjoyed gladiator (2000), i think its a masterpiece.

prince of egypt (1998) i guess?

all the asterix movies of course, all the animated ones and most of the live actions. but i wouldnt really call it historical fiction

ok i havent actually finished watching it for now but sebastiane (1976) - an erotic, x rated, gay interpretation of the martyrdom of st sebastian. its in latin also.

wait i cant believe i forgor about assassin's creed odyssey - so far the only one ive played. its so fun and incredibly immersive visually. especially pour moi who cries into the pillow about how ill never experience the ancient world. also you can b a faggot which is always fun. i have things to say about their portrayal of same-sex sexuality and slavery in classical greece but i get why they did that considering its supposed to like. appeal to a lot of people, and a more "historically accurate" portrayal (for example of pederasty or how common slavery was etc.) would b v difficult for a lot of their target audience. alas.

medieval and early modern era:

the name of the rose (1986) - my medieval history teacher literally showed us bits of this movie to teach us about monasteries and monks fhdosiasdjasd.

the borgias (2011-2013) - incredibly messy, lots of political intrigue, and so so fun to watch. about the history of the borgia family. filled to the brim with drama.

the three musketeers (1993) - my favorite adaptation, also coincidentally the one i grew up on. casting tim curry as richelieu was genius. he slays so hard.

i also like bbc's the musketeers (2014-2016) - a neat little series. very fun and entertaining to watch.

outlaw king (2018) - like i dont think most ppl heard of this movie. its about robert the bruce's fight to reclaim the throne of scotland. starring chris pine

vikings (2013-2020) - its fun. i havent watched the entire series tho. dont expect anything resembling historical accuracy

the northman (2022) - you will see something resembling historical accuracy

mihai viteazul (michael the brave) (1971) - a fun movie. very much romanian propaganda tho.

1670 (2023-) - such a fun series!!! incredible cast, shows respect to the actual history and the lives of historical people. really cute and funny.

caravaggio (1986) - a biopic about caravaggio.

wait i also forgor about pentiment - an intriguing, immersive, and incredibly beautiful video game! it has a lot of 'the name of the rose' vibes, with it being a medieval murder mystery taking place in a monastery. its incredibly touching and made me cry, and in the last few years i very rarely cry. also im 99% sure its an indie game? go support the creators!

vaguely-medieval/early modern fantasy:

mirror mirror (2012) - a retelling of snow white. a very fun movie imo, with incredible costume design. julia roberts plays the evil queen and she SLAYS. armie hammer is unfortunately in that movie.

stardust (2007) - one of my fave movies growing up. more modern-inspired but still.

the green knight (2021) - controversial i know but i actually loved this movie! i liked it both as a standalone movie but moreso as a 21st century adaptation to sir gawain and the green knight.

galavant (2015-2016) - !!!!!!! one of the most series ever! they manage to tackle such difficult concepts and conversations with a hilarious wit. so fun to watch. i listen to a lot of the songs still, and rewatch every once in a while.

disenchantment (2018-2023) - very fun to watch, especially the first season.

i also really liked the novel uprooted by naomi novik. its a polish-inspired fantasy.

modern era:

killers of the flower moon (2023) - of course. a masterpiece

aferim! (2015) - a romanian movie set in 19th century wallachia, about two officers, a father and son, who were sent by a nobleman to retrieve an escaped enslaved romani man. a lot of the people in the comments were calling the movie humorous and funny, maybe im missing smth (as im watching with subtitles n dont understand the original language) but it was a very difficult watch for me??

the handmaiden (2016) - need i say more

black sails (2014-2017) - a prequel to the famous novel 'treasure island'. not an easy series to watch. incredibly good.

the favourite (2018) - need i say more pt 2

the rabbi's cat (le chat du rabbin) (2011) - animated movie set in early 20th century algeria. a rabbi's cat learns to talk overnight.

the nice guys (2016) - a fun murder mystery set in the 1970s

o brother, where art thou (2000) - a retelling of the odyssey set in the southern us in the 1930s

victor/victoria (1982) - set in early 20th century paris. julie andrews pretends to be a man and takes on a job as a drag queen. extremely fun, extremely gay movie.

lady chatterley's lover (2022) - very much porn for moms but it was a nice watch imo

amulet (2020) - set in like. idk. sometime in the 20th century. this is a horror movie, deals a lot with misogyny, sa, and so on. i really like it, personally. a lot of people, mostly weird men, dont tho.

the great (2020-2023) - i have mixed feelings about this show. on the one hand, its really fun to watch. on the other hand, its basically ofmd for girls who have public mental breakdowns whenever someone claims corsets were oppressive. and theyre so weird about russians, jesus christ.

disses:

domina (2021-) - i just couldnt get into it, esp since i tried right after finishing rome hbo. it was kind of silly, and not in a good way. takes itself wayyyy to seriously.

i didnt like spartacus (2010-2013) - the dialogue was almost grotesque and the editing, especially the transitions, straight up killed me

damsel (2024) - holy fuck what a trainwreck of a movie. absolute waste of angela basset and robin wright. the only good thing were the costumes.

lancelot du lac (1974) - i just didnt like it at all. couldnt get into it. i guess it was way too french and artsy fartsy for me. a movie that was trying to say both too little and too much at the same time.

i didnt rly like bram stoker's dracula (1992) - i mean. it was a fine movie. it was definitely not the godfather. the movie itself was meh. the visuals tho? absolutely stunning

few things for clarity first yes phil is a northerner but i think generally his accent has faded and possibly bc of youtube/living in london/living with dan he comes across w a generic southern accent nowadays. although obv some words/being with family/talking about his hometown and childhood etc brings it out. i know phil is a northerner don’t kill me it’s just for the poll’s sake

Doctor Who Reality War Spoilers

So BBC & Disney made the first black male doctor a deadbeat dad, made me sob like a fuckin baby, just to bring back a perfectly written off character essentially?

I hate these fuckers so god damn much they’re such dogshit people. I genuinely enjoyed the writing for 15, I adored everything about him from his fashion & mannerisms to how openly he loved people… just for him to be cut short. Couldn’t even give him a third Christmas special? 10 got FIVE, 11 got four, 12 got four, 13 got four, 14 doesn’t even count, and 15 only got TWO???

Second shortest run after 9, but at least 9 felt… more complete? More intentional? I semi recently rewatched Doctor Who & I remember being sad that he was leaving but all in all I didn’t really feel like he was leaving as soon as he did, perhaps bc we were kinda plopped into his timeline & we don’t really know how long he was 9…

But we know how long 15 was around, & it wasn’t long at all.

10 got 47 episodes. 11 got 42. 12 got 40. 13 got 31. 15 got 18.

18 fuckin episodes. Hell, views were seemingly picking BACK UP. Naw they ain’t SHOOT up but they were climbing back up after sticking in the 70m range (as low as mid 70s!) at the tail end of 13.

Hell, I think what caused Doctor Who the quick success with the first revival in 2005 was the way we immediately dove into it, even w as few episodes as 9 had it wasn’t super “Watch every single episode or be lost af” type of vibe, which IMO definitely got even better w 10, where I think the first time around I caught maybe half of his episodes, still followed the story, still loved him!

Instead of tryin so damn hard to hook ppl with somethin “brand new” (no hate to Ncuti OBVIOUSLY) or with somethin “nostalgic” (love Billie but… come on.) they need to focus on the WRITING. Wrap me up in ADVENTURE! Make viewers learn about and grow to love The Doctor by having us along for these adventures. Let the characters be goofy and end up in wild situations and yeah ofc have some more serious episodes… but like…

Okay, 11. I did not ADORE 11. He was funny, goofy, but whatever odd thing that was going on with Amy & him & then River was… not my cup of tea. Along with Amy either tryin to kickstart a throuple or have a side chick… meh. But!!! BUT!!!! The Centurion. Seeing the doctor being serious, but ALSO his goofy self, and also at that flip flopping point certainly leaving Rory in the dust & I’m sure leaving a few viewers like “aiight how tf is all this gonna come together?” Was amazing.

And I feel like we’ve been hard pressed for an episode quite like that- that shows off the doctor’s inherent wit, how that’s impacted by the specific doctor’s personality, how the doctor responds to even similar/SAME situations across different regens… Daleks are a great example of this- I don’t feel like any two doctors had the same exact reaction despite having who knows how many years of beef with them.

BUT WE DID NOT GET THAT WITH 15. We got all new situations, every episode essentially required the next to be seen for a decent picture of WTF is goin on, we didn’t get any OG enemies &… what? 2 worldwide, genuinely devastating, issues? Meanwhile I feel like most past doctors got 2 worldwide issues a season almost??? The type of shit that had them write in the “you humans remember what you want to remember” type line to explain away how folks keep acting like this is our first alien invasion and then promptly forgetting about it and The Doctor?

Write compelling stories! Have a bunch of episodes that folks can watch for FUN. It’s possible to address social issues w/o making them in your face/depressing, which as much as I personally appreciate IM FUCKIN WEIRD. These companies want views? Return to what worked! Long seasons! Casual “uh oh bad point in time for folks like you/me” & the quick dance around. Characters like Jack, just kissin on women & men equally enthusiastically! Cassandra & her “when I was a little boy” casual trans-ness!

Plus… atp I think most can agree- the world is fucking depressing enough, either way you look at it. Having a comfort show, a good 40min a week/every other week for a few months, then the specials, where ppl can more or less escape/enjoy a world where generally race, gender, sexuality don’t really matter at all bc “he’s a 2[something] century man!” & characters go “aiight you’re the expert”

I’m just… I’m tired. Already. I wanna give Billie a chance, bc she genuinely seems to have a love for Doctor Who from what I’ve seen.

Overall tho… if Doctor Who dies after this next season for another… 15-20 years, like the first time, and has a true revival instead of whatever this 2022 cut off & 2023 nunuwho mini revival bs has been (that alone pisses me off honestly) then chances are I’ll be right there watching… or listening if the world & tech goes to shit & we’re back to radio shows. I’ll be near 50 and tuning in like “ah, I remember this show…”

In relation to the doodle I just postedd........ don't mind me I'm just going to be gushing down here in the blow the under the cut.....

But for the gushing though. I was thinking about this so hard last night and it occasionally comes in my head, but I chronically wear jackets and hoodies all the time, particularly when I'm leaving the house. And I often of course like to have my hands in my pockets while I walk around. Especially because I always have to be doing something with my hands or else I end up doing that hand pose that I can only describe as the thing that Leni Loud always did from the Loud House because I don't know if there is a term for it. And I am such such such such a horrible sucker for the linked arms thing having arms hooked/intertwined HOWEVER YOU WANNA CALL IT. Messes me up so badly I love it so much. It's like being cuffed together but in the most sweetest way possible. Okay it's like being cuffed together but in that one BBC Sherlock episode where he and John Watson are hand-cuffed together but they're having an awkward time running together and so Watson is like "We are going to have to cordinate" and Sherlock is like "..Okay. Take my hand." And then they are running together while holding hands and there is the most gorgeous shot ever of them being out infront of a bus and. I just love it. Such a little thing but it means so much to me. It's like openly admitting you want someone to just be constantly around you and glued to you, you two can't possibly be away from one another if you two have your arms like that. One person goes to walk in one direction then the other will get tugged with, and if you both go to walk in a different direction then you just get pulled right back towards each other. It's harder to get any possibly physically closer to someone unless you two are like laying on top of each other. It's like saying "I want you here with me through this and this and this and this-". And it is such a notable look as well. You see people with their arms locked and you just know "Okay, those people are probably close to one another." and YES this is different than just having your hand on their arm this is INTERLOCKED.

Bonus points if both people both have their arms in their pockets so they are literally getting each other stuck together. I don't know why this thought gets to me so much but I almost crumbled in the grocery store yesterday. Going shopping with him and if we interlock arms then I am going to be taking up a good five to fifteen minutes of the shopping trip trying to pull myself together from it. also tbf ime i had the whole story spoiled for me but i was still absolutely shook when i read it and didn't see any of the twists and turns coming at all. literally gripping my furniture flying around the room couldn't breathe hyperventilating. its that good!!! kind of an intimidating read at first but so worth it. and when you finish it, there are tons of neat adaptations to watch. but not before you finish, because no adaptation is as good as the book, especially when it comes to the really juicy plot details. i feel like most of the adaptations depend on the viewers prior knowledge of the story. because imo (maybe due to time constraints) none of them have the same delightful build-up and tension as the novel.

ok in all seriousness. And ill try to keep this as short as i can. theeee lz experience is hearing them play live, rather than the studio recordings. This may sound weird to hear from a guy born 20 years after lz stopped doing shows lol but theres a LOT of material out there that u can watch/listen to if u wanna get (what i assume is a fraction of) the experience. Probably the easiest thing to find and in best quality (though in my exp the quality of online streams is still atrocious, maybe theres some hq torrents though?) is “the song remains the same”, a concert film of three dates they played at MSG in 1973. but theres also videos floating around of their concerts at Royal Albert Hall 1970 and Earls court 1975 (you can check yt for these) plus a few odds and ends here and there (im a big fan of this tv appearance in france 1969, though this was super early on so their performance “style” isnt yet well defined, esp wrt plant, but the actual playing is still peak imo)

as far of audio-only live recordings go, theres of course the album version of TSRTS, the BBC sessions album (of various radio appearances they did through the years), and the album called “how the west was won” with live versions of many of their more popular songs taken from a couple dates in california in i believe 1972. These are all on spotify or yt or wherever else u listento music. Theyre also really well mastered (and remastered, and re remastered…) bc Jimmy Page is anal like that. So even if theyre live theyre great quality and u can hear every instrument distinctly.

ALSO theres like a million lz bootlegs out there, which is like its own niche subfandom(?). A bootleg is an illegal recording that fans made back in the 70s and then spread around and/or sold for money. the digital versions of many of these are available on yt and archive.org but theres also a huge marked of selling them, the og 70s vinyls are especially prized. idk much about lz bootlegs bc i never could listen to a single one all the way through as all the noise bothers my brain lol so if anyone reading this does and has tips please share<3

I spoke about live stuff bc in my opinion, and also according to members of lz, fans, various music critic type people, basically everyone agrees lol lz studio songs were just kind of the first iteration of what would then mutate and stretch into a more loose, longer, live experience. Imo lz, studio or live, is some of the best music ever made point blank period, but its definitely not for everyone, in that you have to be able to get in that classic rock/prog rock* type of mood of songs lasting anywhere from 6 minutes studio to 35 minutes live, and taking you on this weird journey with ebbs and flows, rather than having a tight structure that is easier to follow and listen to like all pop music ever. i mean this in an entirely value neutral way: a pop song, whether from 1965 or 2015, is easy to listen to bc IT carries YOU through the listening experience, whether you want to or not, whereas for instance a 20 min version of dazed and confused live requires you to willingly be there. Its not work or effort, exactly (at least not to me) but it definitely requires a different type of attention.

ANYWAY, of course theres also the actual studio albums. i dont think theres any specific way you should listen To them, like my friend has been going thru them chronologically but back in the day when i was just getting into lz i just jumped from one song or album to another as the mood struck me (which is how hoth ended up being the first lz album i ever heard… i think itd finished torrenting first and i liked the cover and took it on my ipod on holiday with me, and now its my favorite album of all time & engraved on my very soul lol). If you want MY recs of the stuff i like best, i have this recruitment playlist where i put a mix of my fave lz songs and the ones i think are must-listen for any new fan.

oh god i watched love death robots when it first came out because of all the tumblr hype

no one mentioned all the r18 explicit scenes and other stuff that would have gotten paragraphs of tw

i legit thought i watched the wrong show

some (a very small portion) of it was interesting but the overall experience was miserable

even now im still confused how it ever got that hyped on tumblr of all places

I consider myself to have a high tolerance for the most part in terms of sex scenes and trigger warning-worthy things but Christ the way this show treated women was largely abominable. (The fact that the astronaut woman and the female pilot, the only female leads who felt like regular-ass protagonists and human beings, came so late in the series, makes me think the only reason they were in there is because someone complained about how the previous episodes were.) I liked the comedy episodes written by John Scalzi the best, and some of the twists in other episodes were genuinely interesting, and all the animation was good, but so much of the writing ranged from "mediocre" to "I'm going to kill everyone in here and then myself". And I completely agree with you about being baffled on how this got hyped on Tumblr - how is the website where people go as far as to say shit like "you have to write wlw fanfiction or you hate all women no exceptions" also reccing this show with no caveats??? Two sides of a goddamn razor's edge.

I gotta go back to watching BBC Ghosts and Dead Boy Detectives and The Good Place and all my other shows that actually treat women like people and feature queer characters that aren't "we threw in exactly one set of lesbians and one of them is evil for no logical reason and also we sexualized them in a male gaze direction even though this is an episode about women fighting back against their abusers". Sigh. If anything this is just making me want to work more on my fantasy/sci-fi animated short film scripts that star women who aren't treated as sex objects.

i think the new TARDIS looks really cartoony and i think it's kinda fun, idk if ncuti is gonna end up with this TARDIS set (i'd imagine the bbc doesnt have the budget to make a whole TARDIS set for 4 episodes then just make a new one lol) but i think it looks kinda plain at the moment? idk if they added some chairs and bookshelves n shit like the capaldi one and make it look more lived in overtime it might be one of my favourites just for the whole classic who vibe it has. either way it's perfect for david he gets to run around like a little kid in there and thats all that matters lol

also tennants new suit looks so fucking good and honestly wish he just had that in series 2-4 instead of the brown suit

not like this isnt also true to an extent for other eras. i mentally grime up 13 a Lot, and like clara, or 12, or 10, or whoever, theyre all pretty, right? it's tv, and it's not grimy tv, of course theyre all gonna be made pretty! i already missed some of that lived-in-ness with 13s era but it feels even more sterile now

Every time I think about bringing in fresh blood I think about Jamie Mathieson coming in and writing Mummy on the Orient Express, Flat Line, and Oxygen -- three of my all time favorite episodes of New Who -- and I'm like?? Where'd he go?? Those episodes were so wonderful and felt so fresh and I think about them so often?? Why is he not back??

But I also 10000000% agree that there's literally nothing stopping them from getting someone other than a white man to run the show. I promise you BBC, the world will not end!!
