so like. at what point are we going to stop listening to game companies saying "the game was poorly received and didn't meet our sales targets, and that's why we're removing it from storefronts and taking down all the servers mere months or even weeks after release" for titles that had a long expensive development, were barely marketed, and nobody knew they'd even released until after they heard they were getting shut down and couldn't be played/purchased anymore?
I feel like the prevailing takeaway for anyone who doesn't just conclude "yeah, game was pretty mid, makes sense to me" has usually been "this company just has unreasonably impossible sales expectations and treats every project like a failure if it doesn't print a trillion dollars". but these ARE allegedly experienced business execs who aren't complete idiots, and after this most recent debacle with Concord I'm starting to wonder if a bunch of these "games getting wiped out of existence when they underperform instead of just being allowed to persist as they are and maybe improve with time" cases in recent years might be more of a Warner-Discovery type situation, like nuking an entire animated series or film that was worked on for years and preventing it from being sold because it has to be officially unprofitable for the company to use it as a tax write-off. I look at a game that was worked on for 8 years and only made available for 2 weeks, and it's hard not to see the parallels.
great work, AAA games industry, really normal and sustainable stuff you're doing over there as usual

This is a really good comment.
I can't get over how respectful, sensitive, thoughtful, well-researched, and well-presented this article was.
Deeply grateful for Lila Shapiro's excellent journalism, and in awe of the courage, bravery, strength, and conviction of the survivors.

This post contains spoilers for Ch4 and discussions of topics that may be upsetting like SA. Proceed with caution.
The Snowgrave route is pretty definitively an allegory for sexual assault.
I am not saying SA occurred in canon. I am saying the events are a clear allegory.
In general, the route is about Noelle losing her bodily autonomy. Having her sense of control and self taken over by someone who doesn't care about her needs. And the non consensual romantic implications are there as early as chapter 2. You have to insist you and Noelle are "something else" than friends. You have to give her a ring, which could be compared to a wedding ring.
I feel like the "deflowering" visual for the Ch4 scene pretty much confirms this. Noelle is pricked by a thorn and is "deflowered", losing her innocence. Again, I don't believe SA occurred in canon, but rather that the route as a whole is an allegory for sexual assault, and an intentional one.
Feel free to discuss further.

So i've learned about the altered scene and tbh I'm a little upset that the rose was removed? Like 1. Its clearly a metaphor its not literal- whats literally happening is something with the thorn ring and 2. Its also a metaphor that pertains exactly to the themes of the snowgrave shit. Forcing these two queer characters into hetero-and-cis-normative roles all for the audience's sick kicks, all so their minds and bodies can be used like toys. Violation of agency, feeling cornered by somebody you trusted, and frankly also a critique of fandom's vouyeristic lens on endless uncritical shipping, and how such a focus on saccharine romance can blind people to the genuine analysis of artwork. It is about sadism in a myriad of forms.
Removing it just because parts of the fanbase are apparently gonna take it as an endorsement cuz they cant fuckin understand dark themes in fiction is, with all due respect, a spineless move. I've seen ppl talking like "oh the team probably just didnt realize what it looked like" no i think they all knew EXACTLY what it looked like these chapters have been in development for a solid couple'a years. It was exactly the metaphor you think it is and that's intentional. This is how art works, welcome back to reality.

"Saturn Apollo Program
In this photograph, the Saturn I S-I stages for the SA-4, SA-6, and SA-7 missions were being assembled at the Fabrication and Assembly Engineering Division in the Marshall Space Flight Center building 4705. (Left to right: SA-6, SA-7 & SA-4.) Marshall designed, developed and managed the production of the Saturn I and the Saturn V rocket that took astronauts to the moon. SA-4, an uncrewed test flight of the Saturn I booster, was the final of a series of four tests of the Saturn I first stage."

I've been seeing a lot of discussion regarding the themes and imagery of SA seen in Chapter 4, and in light of this, I thought it would be good to emphasize one very important truth: NEVER FORGET THAT KRIS IS JUST AS MUCH OF A SURVIVOR AS NOELLE!!!!!!
The most horrific thing about Snowgrave isn't simply that the player is coercing Kris to perform acts, but that the player is literally inserting ourselves into Kris's life just as one would figuratively self-insert ourselves into the main character of an RPG, reducing Kris to a mere toy through which the player can act out its twisted fantasies.
As if it wasn't horrific enough to lose their ability to speak and act for themselves, now they have to watch helplessly as their OWN BODY is being exploited and abused against someone they love just to satiate the appetites of a cruel and unempathetic entity that sees them and those they care about as nothing more than playthings.
I don't doubt for one moment that Kris is feeling what countless other survivors have felt: the feeling of being trapped, silenced, and completely isolated, as well as the hatred and fury for not just their abuser, but also themselves, which is demonstrated in how Kris smashes our soul in the bathroom garbage (WHICH HURTS THEMSELVES AS MUCH AS IT 'HURTS' US).
Also, you could argue that saying Kris is culpable or at fault in any for the Snowgrave route ABSOLUTELY REPREHENSIBLE because it's not only textbook victim-blaming (as is guilty of how society smears and persecutes those who don't fit the mold of the "perfect victim"), it also reflects what we do to Kris and Noelle throughout all of Snowgrave, forcing into the roles of "villain" and "victim" just as the player forced them into the roles of "brave knight" and "damsel in distress" in chapter 2!!!!

A very articulate comment under this Savage Speaks video about The Boys most recent episode and Hughie's assault.
P.S. This video by Pop Culture Detective is mentioned in Savage Speaks' one and I think it's an important watch.
