Jimmy's breathing came out in long and calm sighs of contentment. This is nice. He thought to himself as delicate fingers carded through his brown locks. This is... really nice. He sighed, his body began to melt - muscles slowly growing heavy as the feeling of fatigue began to set in. Jimmy let out a soft moan, pressing a lazy kiss to his girlfriend’s neck who smiled down at him.

"Are you sure you’re okay baby? You've been laying here for a while. I'm sure you're uncomfortable - or that you want to go..." She whispered softly, moving hand to pull away from him. Jimmy shook his head and let out a muffled noise of protest as he clung onto her, gripping the fabric of her shirt in a tight fist. Jimmy scrunched up his eyes, voice coming out as a soft whisper. "Don't go. Please. I need this... I need you..."

Ari gave him a nervous smile. “Are you really sure? I don’t want to hog-” Whatever she was going to say was cut off by the feeling of Jimmy sinking his teeth into Ari’s shoulder. Her mouth dropped in shock and a small noise escaped her lips. “Jimmy!” Ari hissed, shooting him a glare, tugging on his hair slightly, making the man whimper in response.

He pulled away, a smug smirk on his lips. I knew it, that was her weak spot. “If anything I’m the one hogging you.” He grinned, leaning in to kiss the tip of Ari’s nose, his hands - rough and warm - slid around her waist as Jimmy smiled. Ari opened her mouth to protest before Jimmy raised an eyebrow staring back at her. “Do you really wanna argue about this? Besides, I love it when you hog me. Even if I’m the one that asked to cuddle.”

Quietly, Ari closed her mouth and a grin spread across Jimmy’s lips, he had won this ‘fight’. He hummed, placing his head back onto her chest, grabbing Ari’s hand and placing it in his hair, a silent request for her to continue her ministrations.

Ari chuckled and rolled her eyes, dragging her fingers through his hair, shaking her head. “I love you Jimmy.” She whispered.

Jimmy smiled. “I love you too.” He mumbled back.

We all know that all the characters in Criminal Minds are tragic characters. They have to be. But I think Hotch takes a great bunch of the burden, and we don't even see him suffer really, and if he does it's often in silence. He takes and gives it all for the team. What hasn't he given?

His marriage

His career

His very own body and blood

Or lost?

Hailey

Emily

Strauss

The Unsub who told him, "You're the only good man I've ever known."

And these things get thrown in his face again and again and again, and he still takes it for the team. If that's not sacrifice for the sake of something bigger than himself then I don't know what is.

To add to all this, we know that he is keenly aware that he is not winning as it were. Because when he was a lawyer he saw how corrupt and terrible the legal system was. He felt like he was too late. And as Unit Chief, even when the team solves a case, that's not winning either. Because people are still dead and he's aware that his job relies on people to continue dying. If they didn't, there wouldn't need to be a BAU.

And he metaphorically dies again and again, and we grieve with him, and our faith is strengthened in his suffering.
