Happy constitutional day to the Sámi people! ❤️💚💛💙
Sámi people are the indigenous people of Norway, Sweden and Finland, as well as one of the indigenous groups of Russland. ❤️💚💛💙
The date, February 6th was chosen as the day, back in 1917, is when the first Sámi congress took place in Trondheim. ❤️💚💛💙
Today marks 30 years since the first Sámi national day was celebrated for the first time. ❤️💚💛💙
For my fellow Norwegians, and others who knows Norwegian, I recommend reading or listening to Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen! ❤️💚💛💙

Museum news from Finland:
Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia donates its Sámi collection to the Sámi Museum Siida
The Sámi Museum Siida is the national museum with the responsibility for preserving the material and cultural heritage of Finland's Sámi people. The Sámi objects in the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia's collections were mainly acquired between 1900 and the 1960s with the last ones added to the collections in the 1980s.
The first part of the donation, which includes the textile items of the collection, will be transferred to representatives of the Sámi museum in the collection facilities of the Museum of North Ostrobothnia on Tuesday, 16 January 2024.
– As the new collection and exhibition facilities of the Sámi Museum Siida are now completed, this seemed like a good time to donate the objects of Sámi origin back to the Sámi community, says Pasi Kovalainen, Director of Cultural heritage work at the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia.
– The Sámi objects and their return have a profound meaning for the Sámi community. The donation is a significant addition to the oldest part of the Sámi Museum Siida's collections. We thank the Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia for this important decision, says Taina Pieski, Siida's Museum Director.
The collections of the Museum of North Ostrobothnia that include objects of Sámi origin date back to the early days of the only professionally run museum in Northern Finland. The objects were collected by Samuli Paulaharju (1875–1944), a folklorist and museum curator from Oulu. The collection was destroyed almost completely by two fires in the museum buildings in 1929 and 1940. After both fires, replacement items were collected in Lapland.
The collection of approximately 400 items now donated consists of Sámi textiles and utensils, including a goahti (traditional Sámi hut) and several sledges. The oldest items include a cheese mould from Enontekiö dating back to 1797 and rare crossbow stocks, the oldest of which dates back to 1730.
As a large part of the Sámi cultural heritage is still held by museums outside the Sámi region, the transfer of the collection is important for the Sámi community.
The Sámi material culture is both practical and beautiful in its diversity, and the museum objects contain a wealth of intangible knowledge about their manufacture and use. This knowledge is best preserved in Sápmi by the Sámi themselves. Through the study of artefacts, it is possible to revive the old craft traditions and techniques of the Sámi community, knowledge of materials and the vocabulary related to the production and use of the objects. The revitalisation processes are a form of communal and intergenerational transfer of learning and knowledge, and they contribute to the transmission of Sámi material and immaterial culture to future generations.
The transfer of Sámi collections to the Sámi Museum Siida over the past decade is a concrete demonstration of genuine cooperation between museums and the increased understanding of the importance of cultural heritage for the Sámi community.

Just saw someone compare the 'Celts' of the 'Celtic Isles' to indigenous peoples of the US and Australia, to Jews and Sámi peoples.
Buddy no one is 'trying to erase' the concept of Celtic indigeneity like they are with these other groups because it is not the same thing!!
I understand I cannot post about how horrifying this concept it is without erasing the concept of Celtic indigeneity. But I am not erasing it because it doesn't exist unless you're some kind of fucking ethno-nationalist loon.
How do we recognise these indigenous Celts, hm? Is it the red hair and green eyes? The wode and tree lore? Should the nasty Saxons get out of their lands and go back to the continent? While we're at it let's have reparations from Rome.*
*(this makes me sound like I'm against serious land back campaigns and reparations when I'm not. The 'Celtic' nations already have devolved governments and flourishing independence campaigns because they are actual countries with diverse populations, not people confined to reservations where they can be conveniently discriminated against by a central government or diffuse groups scattered by not so historic pogroms. Again, not to make it sound like there isn't discrimination against people of these nationalities, but it is not discrimination rooted in anyone's indigenous identity)
People from countries with languages termed part of the Celtic language tree do face hardships owing to lingering ties with Westminster and have historically suffered from colonialism. Language has been a huge part of the effort to suppress any nationalist feeling or identity different to the colonial ideal. Indigenous blood or genetics is not a part of this and should not be brought into it and the only people I've seen seriously argue for that are extremists.
I'm from a mixed family, so I find this talk particularly terrifying to be honest. I'm not giving any company my dna sample but I know from my family history it would be Irish, Scottish, Ashkenazi Jewish and a smidge of English. I don't know if that makes me an indigenous Celt by this person's standards - I was born in England, and speak with an English accent. It seems to me that by the standards of 'indigeneity' applied here, a white Irish-American whose family fled the famine would have more chance of qualifying as a 'Celt' than a first or second generation immigrant poc born and raised in Wales, for example, speaking Welsh as they grow up, and contributing to the economy of Wales.
At the moment there has been a spate of horrifying racist attacks on immigrants in Northern Ireland, some connected to the wider racist riots in England, but many occurring before then and still continuing now. Some of it is Unionist, and some of it is Irish Nationalist. Hatred of immigrants, especially 'visible' (i.e. non-white) immigrants has been the first thing to unite nationalist and loyalist extremists in quite some time. The slogan 'Ireland for the Irish' has been appearing on buildings where people of colour live - many of whom have moved here to raise their children as locals and to work in sectors like the NHS, which is in a woeful state here.
I don't believe in Ireland for the Irish. I don't believe in Celtic indigeneity. I hope, one day, for a united nation of Ireland to occur peacefully, with the peaceful consent of the loyalist minority, and to be a country where the Irish language flourishes in culture and society, where immigrants of whatever nationality are welcomed and invited to integrate and share their own culture too.
---
eta: apparently the user I saw with this take is known for being a massive racist, so no surprises there! Given that they're apparently particularly racist about Palestinians it would be funny to introduce them to some bona-fide 'indigenous Celts' though

okay so unless you've been living under a rock today is orange shirt day / national truth & reconciliation day! while there were assimilation efforts starting as early as the 17th century, from the 1820s to the last residential school in canada, kivalliq hall in nunavut closing in 1997, first nations (both status & nonstatus), inuit & métis children were forced away from their families to attend residential school prisons where they were taught irrelevant curriculum that wasn't even useful for their development, subjected to colonial schooling policies, forced labour/slavery, unethical scientific research based human experimentation oftentimes without their knowledge nor consent of the children or the parents, corporal punishment, withheld food, inadequate heating, little to no contact with parents ranging from 10 months at a time to even years whereas some parents literally camped right outside the school grounds in order to be closer to their children, forced to wear white european settler clothing & having their hair cut which was & still is a source of cultural pride & sacred spirituality, solitary confinement, overcrowded & unsanitary living conditions, violently punished for speaking their languages even to themselves or outside the classroom, practicing their non-christian cultures & religions, or demonstrating any kind of independence & were abused physically, verbally, mentally, emotionally, psychologically, sexually, culturally & spiritually & many died from disease, malnutrition, starvation, beatings, whippings, electrocution, trying to run away, suicide, torture and/or were murdered; native american, alaska native & native hawaiian children were also abused in the exact same way in american indian boarding schools that started in the 17th century in 1819 & ended in 1969 (notice how canada closed the last residential school 28 years — decades — after america did? "canada's nicer" MY ASS), though while today focuses specifically on indigenous turtle island communities specifically in both canada & america, i& have to point out that this has Also happened to other indigenous communities & otherwise minority groups across the world to varying degrees, including but not limited to: the black diaspora in north america, south america & the caribbean while not being forced to attend residential schools (though the segregation of schools must never be overlooked) although there WERE a few black natives/afroindigenous children who were forced to attend residential schools as well they were forced to abandon their native languages, religions & cultural practices & still face discrimination & attempts at forced assimilation, the sámi people of norway, sweden, finland & russia, kvens, tornedalians & finns by the swedish government, several indigenous siberian peoples by the russian government, the mincéiri / travellers of ireland, scotland & wales, kurdish people by the turkish government, the chin, kachin, karen, mon, shan & rohingya people by the british & myanmar governments, aboriginal australians & torres straits islanders called the stolen generations by the australian government & the māori of aotearoa/new zealand by the new zealand government, jewish & romani by various churches & governments, ukrainians by the russian government, the murle people in southern sudan, ainu, ryukyuan, korean & taiwanese people by the japanese government & uighurs & tibetans by the chinese government that's currently ongoing & this has happened so many times across various countries that forcibly taking children away from their families into another group in the hopes of assimilating them into the dominant culture is now considered a form of cultural genocide / culturicide & linguicide. while this has predominantly happened in the so called western hemisphere to enforce western christonormative white supremacy the overwhelmingly vast majority of the time, the perpetrators of these horrible acts are NOT exclusive to white people; this has happened in every continent except antarctica.
additionally, for residential schools in canada & america specifically, this not only applied to oral languages but even sign languages as well, with the many different indigenous children who used their own indigenous languages—both spoken & sign language—being forced to use english, french, asl & lsq, across various churches & their denominations. even moreso, the residential school system in canada & america (as well as the jim crow laws & the armenian genocide) was sick inspiration for cruel dictators like hitler for the holocaust / shoah / porajmos that resulted in the deaths of millions of lives, most especially jewish & romani lives. this is not the ancient past & assimilation is still ongoing. indigenous children all over the globe are still being taken away from their families & it must stop. every single child deserves to play & be safe, be educated & be protected from those who would harm them. every child matters.
while to my knowledge, none of my family members were residential school survivors but what i can tell you is that the evangelization & indoctrination of native communities by white western conservative christians is very much still ongoing. i was a member of an evangelical church group that has branches reaching into even refugee & migrant groups under the guise of a sort of scout group back when i was in elementary school that i later realized growing up that it was actually an international christian nationalist white supremacist child indoctrination cult with their motto to literally become soldiers for god's army with evangelization & missionary work (i will not name it for my own safety) where i was told by one of my cult leaders that indigenous cultures & spirituality — particularly the dreamcatcher — was demonic, evil & wrong, that literal demons came out of it (literal textbook antinative racism), as was anything that was nonchristian, & that the end was near, the rapture was coming in the form of microchips being planted into arms & that all nonbelievers would burn if they didn't "repent" & that god was always watching me & she told me all of this to my face when i was about 8-9 years old & it was one of the major reasons why for years i hadn't reconnected to my own cultures — that's obviously changed now & i've never been prouder; i also know two residential school survivors, both fierce, strong & powerful native women. even if what i described isn't as severe as everything i& mentioned above, considering the context, you can understand why this hits so close to home to me&. so as a two spirit indigenous person of turtle island i& not only extend my& love & support to my& communities on turtle island but also to our& indigenous siblings & cousins across the seas. solidarity is the only way we can truly go forward.
if you are indigenous canadian, you can call the following 24/7 national crisis hotline for residential school survivors & their families & everyone who's affected by it: 1-866-925-4419

Hello! Spotted some of your karelian posts and it got me intrigued; If Sami people (located around the north/Lapland, if i have understood correctly?) are the native/indigenous people of that area, and karelians are the indigenous folks from around eastern Finland/Western Russia (again, sorry if i have misunderstood!), then what are the folks living in western Finland? Are they native people too, or did they come from elsewhere and push back the other people?
Again, sorry to bother you and feel free to ignore this message if you don't feel comfortable asking. I just recently found out that i have family ties to western parts of Finland and I am trying to learn where the lines are drawn, so to speak, when it comes to cultural stuff. I have tried to look up information online, but there is not much material going around, especially written in English.
the Sámi used go inhabit pretty much everything very southern "Finland" all the way up to the northern shores of what's now Norway. There's been a lot of discussion on whether or not the southern coast of modern day Finland was also inhabited by the Sámi once upon a time or if there's been Finnic peoples living there "all along" (quotes because, you know, we as Finno-Ugric peoples ultimately decend from people who migrated here from the east but how far back in history is it reasonable to go to when discussing this stuff is another thing). But who expanded where and when and with what kind of relations with their neighbouring peoples is only a part of the whole deal; Finns aren't indigenous because they have a nation state. They have been there to establish the borders (together with other narion states) and to created a system that favours their culture, language, religion and identity. And when I say favours, I mean has been forcing it on others since "Finland" as we know it came to exist. It doesn't matter if Finns would have a claim on, say, Finland Proper or southern coast as an indigenous people under different circumstances (never having gained independence from Russia or Sweden?) because they currently are the dominant, colonising people here.
Anyhow, the western coast has a long Swedish speaking history. There are old settlements there (/have been old settlements there) that likely were Swedish speaking "all along". Where you family fits in all this depends on where exactly they live(d) and who they, in specific, are.
