Okay, kittens, here's an old Russian slang lesson: in our language calling a man "blue" means "he's gay".

Headcanon is fun and i love discussing it. it’s all fictional and since the text doesn’t give us much concrete shit on these topics we’re all free to make our own, equally valid readings of it. :3

Leo- Transmasc He/Him, gay as fuck who here could’ve guessed, ADHD haver, definitely smokes weed. Fluent in spanish from watching telenovellas as a child. Wants to be a flirty whore/aff so fucking bad but whenever he sees someone he’s legitimately attracted to any charisma he might’ve had gets thrown out the window and into a woodchipper in favor of helpless stuttering. His portalling mishaps early in the series have led him to silly sidequests all over the world that he just,,,, doesn’t really talk about. This won’t come up until they’ll end up in some random ass place and find out just how well travelled and connected he actually is. He’s also got a job at Hueso’s for fun and extra cash to fund his addiction to pot and ordering stupid shit he doesn’t need online. He’s a server, wears rollerskates to “move faster” on the job, just ends up running into shit more often than not. Great with the kids tho, performs little sleight of hand magic tricks and tells jokes to make them happy, never had a fussy kid he couldn’t calm down in a snap. Calls himself Hueso’s nephew and nepotism hire, ignoring the fact that he’s actually a decently competent and well liked employee outside of the several skating related accidents. Shell was cracked badly in the invasion, when they sealed it up, he asked Mikey to paint the healed cracks gold, mimicking the japanese practice of Kintsugi.

Mikey- Definitely queer but not into labels ;3 He/Him is what he defaults to, but any pronouns work for them. Semi fluent in italian, don’t ask me why, just feels right, let chef boy speak italian dammit. One of those mfs on instagram who insists on posting pictures of the food he makes, except his actually looks good and not painfully mediocre so they get a pass. Has been tagging walls in hard to reach spots all over the city for years at this point, after Raph confronted her abt it, fearing that he’d get caught someday, he told him that he’d stop. Donnie- NonBinary They/He Bisexual but i can’t decide if they’re the kind that can’t stop pulling or can’t pull to save his life. Fluent in several languages, ASL, French, Russian, Japanese. Actually one of their few acedemic endeavors that he doesn’t typically show off and gloat about, makes it all the scarier when his siblings hear him muttering vaguely threatening sounding shit in russian when shit doesn’t go their way. Has tried most substances for “research purposes”, ultimately decided he doesn’t like the feeling of their big ol brain being hindered under the influence, this has a few exceptions tho, mainly when it’s with Leo. Has John Bishops IP address and threatens to drop it on 4chan to “see what happens” every time he tries messing with their family or stopping him from “borrowing” material resources from the US government. Almost considered bs-ing his way into college before they used a cloaking broach to shadow april at school for like 2 days. It was there they learned that the education system fucking sucks and he probably knows more than most professors about his topics of interest anyway. Does freelance work for cash, as far as their brothers know they’re not building and selling anything dangerous (which is code for probably arming both sides in a far away military conflict with deathrays). Spends his free time cyber bullying children on roblox and twitter, and caring for their greenhouse of plants that all have names. Raph- Someone please send the big man some help😭 he/him(?) Definitely queer in some way shape or form but refuses to confront any identity crisis because he’s just so busy keeping his dumb ass siblings outta shit. Tried weed once and will never touch a substance again, makes his anxiety spike real bad when he doesn’t feel in full control of himself. Runs around with Cassandra and sometimes Jr to do vigilante justice on the side of he and his siblings’ usual patrols. Living garbage disposal and i mean that quite literally. He has and will eat anything, rocks, toys, silverware, sometimes on accident, sometimes on a dare, and sometimes just because he wants to. He grew up gnawing on the legs of furniture, rusty sewer pipes, really any nonliving thing that he could fit his choppers around (unlike donnie who just bit any living creature within a 5 mile radius of his location). Since the invasion made Leo step up as leader Raph has been able to step back a little bit and not have everything in a chokehold, he has a mini crisis about his place in the family and his sense of identity without being a leader. Tries to hide how much it’s affecting him but ofc, living with mikey, this does not last and his ass FINALLY gets chucked (very lovingly) into therapy. Loves to knit, definitely in some kind of old lady facebook group centered around it (he has so much nursing home gossip floating around in his brain hehe)

Sexyman criteria I go into (from the Sexypedia):

Some are either I am "___-coded", have hints of some of these tropes, or I am related to things here (due to me being an actual person and not a character).

Androgynous: Characters who are either genderless, or partly male and partly female in appearance.

Animal Theming: A strong association or connection to an animal. (I'm a moth therian.)

Artsy: Sexymen who appeal to the theater kid in us: whether they paint, make music, or perform, they’ve got a flair for the arts for sure.

Bait: Some sexymen emerge organically. Others are created by design. The creators of these characters are aware of this phenomenon, and deliberately design characters to be picked up by sexyman culture. (I wanted to look and act like a sexyman.)

European: A sort of broader variation of the British trope, for Sexymen that are Russian, Italian, French, etc. (I'm Russian.)

Chaoslord: Characters who are strongly associated with themes of chaos, are nearly always trolls, and almost certainly rely heavily on random/quirky style humor (hey, nothing wrong with that!).

Deadpan Snarker: Sexymen that use a lot of deadpan humor, are snippy with others, or both.

Distinctive Voice: In many cases sexymen have extremely distinctive vocal performances that are virtually always considered by the fandom to be a major component of their sex appeal.

Quotable Catchphrase(s): Many sexymen say something quotable that the fandom picks up on. (I say shiz all the time and I have a slogan.)

Distinctive Speech Patterns: Characters that speak in easily recognizable ways - using slang from certain decades, unusually posh wording, archaic or simple grammar, overusing abbreviations or barely using them... Especially common in media without voice acting, or depending on exaggeration. (I talk more eloquently and old-timey.)

Distinctive Laugh: Characters who have a tendency to laugh frequently and/or have a distinctive, iconic laugh.

Duality: Think Jekyll and Hyde. Sometimes the character has an existing evil side, sometimes the fans make it happen.

Egotistical: Characters who think they are hot shit, basically. Expect them to brag about their accomplishments and act like they are the next coming. Might have a real "would date their clone" energy, which... might explain some things.

Gay: Characters who are canonically LGBTQ+. (I'm transmasc xenogender aroace.)

Questionable LGBT Rep: A character that embodies a negative LGBTQ+ trope or stereotype such as predatory gay man/lesbian, gay-coded villain, etc. (I kind of embody "AroAces are evil and narcissistic and not human".)

Intelligence: A common trait of sexymen, whether canonically present or added/accentuated by the fandom, is marked intelligence, especially of the clever calculating manipulative chessmaster kind. especially common in chaoslords and anyone with "well-dressed class British tophat twink" vibes. (I can usually manipulate people into doing things for me.)

Smartdumb: Characters that are both intelligent and stupid at the same time, usually being "book smart yet street dumb" - for example, being an expert in their field, but lacking common sense or basic knowledge of the world they live in. (I have problems with social skills and I am more old-timey and a bunch of modern things just do not make sense to me.)

Knifemurder: Characters who like to kill people, usually by stabbing. (I talk about murder a lot and act like I've killed people before.)

Magnificent Bastard: As per TV Tropes, a Magnificent Bastard is a "villain (or morally gray character at best) portrayed as confident, charming schemers who thinks on their feet, outsmarts their competitors with style and grace, and remains graceful even in the event of defeat".

Neurodivergent: For characters that are canonically neurodivergent in some way, usually autistic/anxiety but it can be anything. (I might have autism, generalized anxiety disorder. I'm a maladaptive daydreamer and a plural system)

Neurodivergent Coded: For when a character has really strong HINTS at being neurodivergent, but nothing is ever confirmed in canon. (I'm not diagnosed but I'm basically neurodivergent.)

Pale Twink: Skinny young pale dudes. Usually taller than average. Not much facial or body hair. Doesn't have to be white, just pale; this is an archetype of many Japanese anime characters. (I barely go outside.)

Parental Issues: Character who have serious conflict with their parents and/or were abused by them

Demonic: Characters that are either demons or associated with occult/satanic imagery (I'm the Daydream Demon for Hell's sake-)

Retro: Sexymen that are heavily associated with "retro" things, such as old 1920s style cartoon animation, radios, and 8-bit arcade games. (I'm a 1920s type of guy!)

Villain: Characters who are the bad guys of their stories. (I am very villain-coded.)

Morally Grey: Characters who aren't necessarily evil, but aren't exactly good either.

Villain Protagonist: A villain who is the protagonist or main character. It's fairly self-explanatory.

Well-Dressed: Sexypeople who wear overly intricate or fanciful outfits.

Suitguy: Characters who typically wear formalwear, specifically suits. Often includes waistcoats, top hats, bowties, and pinstripes. Other neckwear may also be worn.

Hatguy: Characters that wear fancy hats like top hats and fedoras as prominent part of their design (I wear a fedora a lot.)

After watching MGS4 cinematic cutscenes, I honestly believe that Bosselot is canon imo even though it was one-sided at first but I do think that BB notices Ocelot's love especially how loyal Ocelot is for him maybe after MGS3 or during MGSV. Just like BBKaz in PW for Date with Kaz

it's a very efficient and safe way of using wood fire to heat yr house!

❌️ a fireplace gives you direct radiant heat from the flames & embers, but all the hot air goes up & out the chimney. plus even well-seasoned wood only burns incompletely, especially once you've "banked" it (set it up to burn cooler & slower), so you end up with a sooty tarry chimney that needs to be cleaned fairly frequently.

➿️ a cast iron stove also gives direct radiant heat, and it stops the hot air in your house from going out of the chimney! this is an improvement for sure. but the hot air from the fire itself still goes out of the chimney, you still run into the banking problem, plus cast iron stoves tend to get extremely, dangerously hot to the touch & often don't show it. they need a lot of tending to ensure you're heating yr house safely and consistently and they just aren't safe if you have little kids or pets.

☑️ soapstone stoves are cast iron stoves with inset slabs of soapstone, a soft, dense type of stone. the slabs tend to absorb a lot of the most intense heat and gently radiate it out over a longer period of time. this helps with the risk of burns and also reduces the constant tending needed by a typical cast iron stove (but doesn't come close to eliminating it). these are pretty good. but the hot air from the fire itself still goes straight out the chimney, so you still end up losing a decent amount of heat that way. i've mostly seen them as like, conversation pieces or secondary sources of heat at best.

if only there were a way to keep the hot air inside until it has let off all its heat! enter the masonry stove aka tile stove/masonry heater/kachelofen/russian stove! ✅️✅️✅️

its firebox is designed to burn VERY hot, allowing for nearly complete combustion of the wood fuel - so almost no smoke & almost no tarry buildup. but unlike a cast iron stove, the whole thing is made of stone/brick/tile, so all that heat gently trickles through & there's no risk of burning yourself.

the hot exhaust (almost exclusively co2 and water vapor) goes through a long and convoluted chimney passageway, also made of stone/brick/tile, gradually releasing that heat into the thermal mass of the stove, until it is juuust hot enough to rise out of the rest of the chimney into the sky. this is a super super efficient use of wood - something like 90-95% of the potential thermal energy of the wood is kept inside.

because of how slowly the heat trickles through the thermal mass, you don't actually have to keep a fire burning the whole time - often people do a burn for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, which means it's generally less work. and since you don't have to worry about banking a fire, keeping embers smoldering, etc, you can use smaller sticks & branches that wouldn't be suitable for a log fire except as kindling. this is actually an ideal use for coppiced wood!

(side note - if you bundle up the sticks & branches into a big armful, the technical term is actually a "faggot" of wood, and no the slur didn't come from using those to burn gay people (something that actually didn't happen), it's from british slang for cigarettes & british boarding school slang)

the main downside is they tend to be BIG. you see smaller ones in modern scandanavian homes, but when you see them in historical contexts they're often like a quarter of the room. this means they're super expensive and really really heavy, so you often need to build a reinforced foundation pad for them! or at the least plan for them to be as heavy as a Big fireplace. on the plus side this means they often have (heated) benches built into them, and historically people would actually sleep on top!

Hirschfeld, (an Ashkenazi Jew from a prominent family in Poland) was educated in philosophy, philology and medicine. An outspoken advocate for sexual minorities, Hirschfeld founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee and World League for Sexual Reform. He based his practice in Berlin-Charlottenburg during the Weimar period. Historian Dustin Goltz characterized the committee as having carried out "the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights". He is regarded as one of the most influential sexologists of the twentieth century.

Hirschfeld was targeted by Nazis for being Jewish and gay; he was beaten by völkisch activists in 1920, and in 1933 his Institut für Sexualwissenschaft was sacked and had its books burned by Nazis. He was forced into exile in France, where he died in 1935.

The Institute housed Hirschfeld's immense archives and library on sexuality and provided educational services and medical consultations; the clinical staff included psychiatrists Felix Abraham and Arthur Kronfeld, gynecologist Ludwig Levy-Lenz, dermatologist and endocrinologist Bernhard Schapiro, and dermatologist Friedrich Wertheim. The institute also housed the Museum of Sex, an educational resource for the public, which is reported to have been visited by school classes. Hirschfeld himself lived at the Institution on the second floor with his partner, Karl Giese, together with his sister Recha Tobias (1857–1942). Giese and Hirschfeld were a well-known couple in the gay scene in Berlin where Hirschfeld was popularly known as Tante Magnesia. Tante ('aunt') was a German slang expression for a gay man but did not mean, as some claim, that Hirschfeld himself cross-dressed.

People from around Europe and beyond came to the institute to gain a clearer understanding of their sexuality. Christopher Isherwood writes about his and W. H. Auden's visit in his book Christopher and His Kind; they were calling on Francis Turville-Petre, a friend of Isherwood's who was an active member of the Scientific Humanitarian Committee. Other celebrated visitors included German novelist and playwright Gerhart Hauptmann, German artist Christian Schad, French writers René Crevel and André Gide, Russian director Sergei Eisenstein, and American poet Elsa Gidlow.

In addition, a number of noted individuals lived for longer or shorter periods of time in the various rooms available for rent or as free accommodations in the Institute complex. Among the residents were Isherwood and Turville-Petre; literary critic and philosopher Walter Benjamin; actress and dancer Anita Berber; Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch; Willi Münzenberg, a member of the German Parliament and a press officer for the Communist Party of Germany; Dora Richter, one of the first transgender patients to receive sex reassignment surgery at the institute, and Lili Elbe. Richter had been previously arrested for cross-dressing and discharged from the military. At the suggestion of a close friend, she later came to the institute for help. Hirschfeld had coined the term transvestite in 1910 to describe what today would be called transgender people, and the institution became a haven for transgender people, where Hirschfeld offered them shelter from abuse, performed surgeries, and gave otherwise unemployable transgender people jobs, albeit of a menial type, mostly as "maids".

That is the official account. But left out is that Magnus Hirschfeld was also an advocate of sexualizing children or Pedophilia and was engaged in Social Experimentation and Engineering while in Weimer.

This sounds reasonable enough, and it was entirely in accord with the value-set I was raised with. Yet, in the context of other less openly-discussed areas of “sexual exploration” which seemed to sprout quite organically from the Fabian tree (such as PIE), it also reads like a recipe for disaster.

If we look at the twentieth century alone, the idea of sexualized children, and a belief in the benefits of adult-child sex, can be found in areas as seemingly diverse as:

Freud's theories, and his insistence that children's accounts of being sexually abused were based in their own fantasy life and secret desires, more than on actual events.

Early psychosexual research in the UK by Havelock Ellis and the Fabian Society (and later via the Tavistock Institute).

Magnus Hirschfeld and the Scientific Humanitarian Committee in Germany, probably the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights and later the Institute of Sexual Research.

The Order of Chaeronea (founded by George Cecil Ives)nd the “Uranian” or “third sex” movement.

Early literary works such as Nabokov's Lolita (inspired by Ellis).

Experiments in progressive schooling initiated by Fabians such as Edward Carpenter and Cecil Reddie.

The early Wiccan movement (such as the Order of Woodcraft), which Crowley influenced and was directly involved in (he wrote many of the rituals with Gerald Gardener).

“MKULTRA” mind control experimentation in the US and the UK in the 1950s and beyond. This overlapped with the use of hallucinogens as a means of “liberation,” something Crowley was directly involved in.

Alfred Kinsey's “groundbreaking research,” which entailed the controlled sexual abuse of children and the recruitment of child molesters to do it. (Kinsey was also interested in Crowley.)

Charles Manson and his “family,” who, like Crowley (having doubtless read him), prohibited the discipline of children and included them in group sex play.

And exactly what went on at the institute in Weimer, founded by Hirschfeld?

"Berlin became the center of sexual research in the 1800s and early 1900s, Magnus Hirschfeld the leader of the pack. The population of Berlin exploded, from the 400,000 in the 1800s to 4 million in 1920. Berlin went from a city of open sewers to the first city ever electrified, with, in 1800, electric streetcars and lighting. It went from a city of open sewers to one of public toilets and baths, from the filthiest to the cleanest city in the world, infinitely more hygienic than London, Paris and N.Y. Magnus Hirschfeld (1868–1935) was a sexologist who practiced in Berlin. He founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee with others in 1897, the purpurpose to promote sexual understanding. His work was inspired by a military officer who committed suicide on the eve of his wedding, preferring death to what would be required on his honeymoon night, an epiphany for Hirschfeld.

Dubbed the Einstein of sex, Hirschfeld opened the Institute for Sexual Research in the liberal Weimar Republic in 1919, that housed a Museum of Sex and had some 50 rooms, one of which was occupied for a time by Christopher Isherwood and visited by W.H. Auden, André Gide and Sergei Eisenstein. There was a museum with sex toys and walls plastered with photos of nudes, presumably there for sexual education, and lots of men dressed as women and women as men, both in photos and live as visitors. Teas were offered at the Institute, reigned over by Hirschfeld and his lover Karl Giese.

In “The Childhood Origins of the Holocaust,” the psycho-historian Lloyd deMause talks about Weimar culture, the flourishing of the arts and sciences in Germany during the Weimar Republic. This period between Germany's defeat in World War I and Hitler's rise to power, deMause writes, may have produced “exuberant creativity and experimentation” but also created “anxiety, fear and a rising sense of doom.” By the end of the 1920s, so many reactionary anti-democratic backlash parties had spontaneously sprung up that Weimar was called “a Republic without republicans.” People began to call for “emancipation from emancipation” and “a restoration of authoritarian rule.” (deMause, 2005)

Magnus Hirschfeld was just one of a group of prominent to wealthy men using marginalized people for social experimentation, and the pushing of their own agendas during pre-WWII Germany. 100% sure Sexual Liberation and Gender and Sex debates by political extremists were pushed as hard then, as they are being pushed now, the result of which was/is of course, using it as an excuse to push Conservstism/Fascism. Hirschfeld was also NOT forcibly exiled from Germany. Luckily for him, in the months before and after the Nazis burned the Institution, he was on a worldwide book tour. Sharptooth - “No Sanctuary”

Virtually any track off of Sharptooth’s debut full-length record Clever Girl is fit to be included in this list. Vocalist Lauren Kashan writes about everything from politics to sexual abuse on the heavy-hitting album. “No Sanctuary” is a blistering reaction to the 2016 shooting at the gay nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando, Florida. As a queer person, Kashan writes from a very personal perspective about how homophobic language and culture leads to such horrific acts of violence.

“What would make some person think it’s OK to go into a nightclub and kill a bunch of gay people?” the vocalist said in a previous interview. “A culture that fosters that kind of homophobia. Even in small ways like in our language, in our slang. That’s the line “Every time you say faggot / It’s a bullet through my head.” Whenever you use slurs like that at somebody like me, that could, down the road, result in somebody like me getting killed. That could honestly apply to any marginalized group. People die. You’re not absolved of guilt just because you didn’t have a gun in your hand.”

The Cranberries - "Zombie"

The Cranberries most enduring song, “Zombie” is a reflection on the 1993 bombing incident in Warrington, England, carried out by members of the Irish Republican Army. Two young boys, a 3-year-old and a 12-year-old, died as a result of the explosion. Being an Irish band, The Cranberries — and vocalist Dolores O’Riordan in particular — were offended by the attack being carried out in the name of Ireland.

I've now been told by multiple Russian speakers that the word for the color "light blue" in Russia is slang for gay, and that it would be implausible for any Russian speaker of any real competency not to know that.

So that means that when Valentina Rodionenko said, "We are offered to perform under some blue flag..." she may have been using a double meaning for "They want us to perform under some gay flag."

The next question is... did the many European feds who clearly wrote that document know this when they put the light blue requirement in?
