A change of pace is always nice and refreshing while one is on a reading spree, like me. The books that I read in the past month were very deep and intense hence I needed to read something light and less overwhelming, and here I was going through Ruskin Bond’s bibliography when I stumbled upon The Hidden Pool. MILVERTON'S POSSIBLE BIRTH CLASS

This is again something I always hinted thoughts about, but the topic also deserves its own analysis/theory (well, more of a theory).

What is Milverton's birth class?

First and foremost, let's talk a little about the classes of the Victorian era. The upper class - mostly nobles with a great wealth and titles, properties what passed to them through their families. The middle class, mostly professionals, merchants who earned their wealth - not a big wealth but enough to give a better education to their children, have some servants and own a house. The working class where the workers belonged to who always stayed poor and barely received education and they were just replaceable employees to the classes above. And the underclass, the outcasts of society who had nothing.

Now, before we go on to determine where Milverton originally belonged to, a little reminder because I feel like people often forget this in the fandom - Milverton is not a noble. He is now an upper class person with a business empire, wealth, several properties and houses, but he was not always that high. We can even hear it from him, that his companies and influence are all to taste the thrill of temptation, which hints that it was him who built up his business empire just to have the power for evil. But where did he come from? Here, I will raise four points we can speculate by.

THE MORIGANG'S TALK

When the Morigang first talked about him, they mentioned that he is the King of Media with several newspapers, but nothing else beside that. This is very much in contrast on how they talk about nobles where they also tell some information about their families. Even Jack doesn't know more about Milverton than that he is no noble but a successful businessman. Well, Jack is old and he was a butler at a noble family so he must have known about the important families of London - just see Albert's original family, they always gossiped among each other. The fact that even he didn't know more about Milverton, not knowing where he came from means that he wasn't from some notable middle class family (like, not from a family who owned companies because he would have mentioned that) but from a family of nobodies and Milverton was the first person who gained a position. He also probably took up a new name and his family is not even alive anymore, that's why his past cannot get traced back.

THE VIOLIN

Milverton wasn't able to recognize that the violin was fake. Music studies or going to music-related events were important things for the better part of the middle class. Sherlock for example could learn to play violin - but Milverton couldn't recognize a fake (like Ruskin or also, John.) So this means that all three of them comes from a class lower than Sherlock's.

HIS CLOSEST SUBORDINATES

His most trusted people - Ruskin, Harry, Gosling - are clearly either working class or underclass people. (I speculate that Harry and Gosling are definitely underclass, they know the darkest places of the city too well and that's what made them to be so good mercenaries. And Ruskin's behaviour around the violin suggests that he is also from the lower class). Obviously, Milverton hired them because they are capable of doing their jobs, but might also because they didn't have a better background than him. Milverton has a sensitive ego, if he would have hired a middle class person as a secretary - like other influential businessman did that time - it could have remind him of his own lower background.  So this can be another reason why the people around him are from lower classes.

BLACKMAIL IS HIS MAIN WEAPON

Who was the other blackmailer in the story? Irene Adler (I talk about Bond's past self as someone completely separated from Bond now), who tried to help the poor by blackmailing influential people (nobles) - and as a woman who was not noble, who had lesser rights in the society she lived in because of her gender and class, that was her only way to fight. Because blackmail is the weapon of the weak, those who have lesser rights than the rest, the only thing someone who is weak can gain some power with. Now Milverton blackmails because it became a tendency for him and he enjoys it but back then, he must have blackmailed because he didn't have a chance otherwise. I am sure he gained all of his current power and built up his companies with blackmail.

Based on what we can gain from these information, I would say Milverton is most likely from the working class or the very very lows of the middle class. I would love to learn more about his backstory and his way to power.

soo, it goes long back ofc, but i began with Geronimo Stilton, god i was OBSESSED, little me and my cousin, wanted to open a library dedicated to Geronimo Stilton, so we'd hoard books like crazy, but then i moved on to ruskin bond for a while, if i had to pick my favourite out of his collection, it'd be "A gathering of friends" it's a compilation of little stories and is totally worth the read, then came enid blyton, Roald Dahl, nancy drew and every teen book, then i read the inescapable, The fault in our stars, and Looking for Alaska, then came the book that legitimately changed the literature world for me, "The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusak, from then i transitioned to a lot more mature? themed books, i read The Secret History, Frankenstein and Dead Poets Society, i've also ventured into non fiction, with some self help and autobiographies, but nah, i like fiction more, i also read the og Dracula (stole it from my dad) also stole "The strange case of Dr.Jekyl and Mr.Hyde", for a little while i had this phase of subconscious mind and read a book about it don't remember the name thought and ofc The Alchemist, though i have a whole literal pinterest board dedicated to the books i want to read, so hopefully when i'm done with jee, i'd get back to reading, i REALLY want to read The Picture of Dorian Grey and If We Were Villains.

Yes, here are few I've enjoyed:

Landour Bazaar by Ruskin Bond: all stories from, set in, and inspired by his time in Landour near Mussoorie. They're so lovely and so kind

Also, while we're on Ruskin Bond: Time Stops at Shamli, The Night Train at Deoli, and Season of Ghosts

Dark Satellites by Clemens Meyer: about people living on the margins in Germany, particularly in what used to be East Germany

The Dangers of Smoking Bed by Mariana Enriquez: spooky, gothic horror from Argentina. All stories are set in Buenos Aires, all are centered on women, and all of them definitely are creepy

No Presents Please by Jayant Kaikini: fiction on living in Mumbai, especially what the migrant, working-class encounter with the city is like

Antarctica by Claire Keegan: her debut collection, and a good place to start with Keegan. The language is tight but so, so clinical, and the stories have so much to unpack

Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman: partly fantasy, partly gothic, partly urban legend, partly just funny. It's a really varied collection and one I had fun reading because of the expanse of it

In A Free State by V. S. Naipaul: about colonial and postcolonial exiles and migrants; what rootlessness does or means on a daily basis; very moving

Hello guys!! I am writing this as an intro post. First of all, thanks to everyone for your comments and encouragement in the story 'A Job Well Done' and poem 'Death' I posted a while ago. I will try to bring better stories and improve on points that you all pointed out.

So....... I am Aurora (pen name) and am currently 16 years old. Yeah, I am still studying in school but as a hobby, I write time to time. So, I may appear with a story once in a while and then disappear for a looong time during exams or due to study pressure. English is not my first language. So, pardon my spelling and grammatical mistakes.

I don't really have a favorite genre since I read anything that comes in my way. Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Ruskin Bond, Secret Seven, Famous Five, etc. are some of my favourite reads and also I am a Potter Head (I have read all of the books in the series!). Other than these I read a mixture of tales from different authors from genres horror, comedy, sci - fic, etc.

I usually weave my stories from ideas I obtain from books, movies, day to day activities and even from my strange dreams and nightmares. Sometimes I may add some details that may be inaccurate and completely wrong. So, bear those mistakes cause I am unknown to those facts and need to read about it online or even invent those details to match the plot. Also, most of my stories may not fall in a specific genre since I usually write freestyle without fixing the genre.

Hope I can entertain you all with my stories. And I request for comments and even critiques, along with all your love and encouragement.

Still hates physics(and most things theory)> by which, he also stores insane and inane amount of stats info (abt all types of things, but mostly sports) inside his head ready to be flourished at a moments notice, which is mildly impressive when ur 6 and debating with college students the scores of a game that happened 15yrs before u were born but not now when ur 17 and ppl are more focused on your test scores rather than ones u know, so</3 also has his birthday on changbin's but he doesnt know abt that

#of Pets: there's a history there. with fishes that my ma deceived me with on my 12th birthday(when i asked for a pet, i imagined smth i could hold) and then liked too much herself that we had them for 5yrs. three times; birds, but my brother kind of freed them while singing a lullaby with only me as an unbelieving witness. a dog (belovedest of em all) my dad picked from street as a puppy and who, then, had to be given away after 3yrs bcs of Stupid Reasons im still mad abt. now i just have street cats showing up at my front door to safekeep their babies on my staircase's isolated nooks till they grow up and vanish and street dogs who believe i have endless supplies of treats and show me sad faces when i dont. i really want a pet</3 but for now im contending with pictures of kitties whose moms operate on strict 'see-dont-touch' policies and sweet sweet strays who like to befriend u too easy.

Fandoms: many, but rn im active mostly in skz and mxtx. id love to be in other stuff i read and watch but since Capitalism hates me dearly,,,

Favorite Color: darker shades of all and any colors(esp blue green and red)!!! can be relied upon immensely to look warm and pretty always

Favorite Song: picking favorites for anything is out of my capabilities. also am just listening to my favorite bollywood playlist a lot these days.

Favorite Author: have a working list of favorite poets that does not end at 1. have not read a book seriously in four years of exam/prep-locking. but even if i did, idt ill be able to pick any favorite bcs, yk. good things in many things. (tldr; its roald dahl) (and ruskin bond who i read when i was 5 and still read when im so tired bcs his stories inspire me to write always)

Hobbies: I dance(perform) sometimes? I write??(←derogatory, dubious) make stuff, mostly poems and stories and tinker with free things i can do, both online or craft. analysis of things with friends is a beloved activity. i liek yoga and stretching (rn in an ongoing war with 3° winter mornings to drag myself out of bed and go to class at 6) cooking when i have time but mostly, always, reading (or! watching) stories, poems and learning abt cool nonfiction things (does crying abt fiction count)

Favorite Holiday: none of the above its the trips and getaways u make for yourself. all my beloved memories are always mostly from when our family makes a trip to someplace my mom insists or there's a non-worrying emergency to go somewhere. just family getting together under some pretense, even tho it is stressful as fuck.

Fun facts about you/anything extra you wanna share!: since im having it rn- coffee doesnt keep me up or sometimes even makes me nod off, a fact i discovered after my 14yr old brain had the brilliant idea to try out the cool, forbidden drink after dinner knowing i wasnt allowed to. this is not fun to my ma but growing up in a sort of restrictive household, im also just weirdly good at sneaking and doing stuff im not supposed to without getting caught. i also do not know how to talk in lesser words. this is an absolute curse, yes i have tried. beware</3
