Slain former prime minister Shinzo Abe was the son of a foreign minister, and grandson of another prime minister, Nobusuke Kishi. Grandpa Kishi was a member of the wartime junta and was arrested by the Americans as a suspected war criminal. But he escaped the hangman and in the mid-1950s helped found the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has ruled Japan ever since. Some people joke Japan is a one-party state. It isn't. But it's reasonable to ask why Japan continues to re-elect a party run by an entitled elite, which yearns to scrap American-imposed pacifism, but has failed to improve living standards for 30 years.

every time i read an article from the bbc i am shocked once again by how poorly written it all is. not only am i opposed to their whole ideology, i find myself cringing at their writing style, which is consistently unprofessional and unpleasant to read. i get that they’re not going for anything super complex or creative, but they essentially write in bullet points. and every attempt at going off-script sounds super childish

The US is quietly arming Taiwan to the teeth
BBC News By Rupert Wingfield-Hayes When US President Joe Biden recently signed off on a $80m (£64.6m) grant to Taiwan for the purchase of American military equipment, China said it “deplores and opposes” what Washington had done. To the casual observer it didn’t appear a steep sum. It was less than the cost of a single modern fighter jet. Taiwan already has on order more than $14bn worth of US…

A third of Japanese people are over 60, making Japan home to the oldest population in the world, after tiny Monaco. It is recording fewer births than ever before. By 2050, it could lose a fifth of its current population. Yet its hostility to immigration has not wavered. Only about 3% of Japan's population is foreign-born, compared to 15% in the UK. In Europe and America, right-wing movements point to it as a shining example of racial purity and social harmony. But Japan is not as ethnically pure as those admirers might think. There are the Ainu of Hokkaido, Okinawans in the south, half a million ethnic Koreans, and close to a million Chinese. Then there are Japanese children with one foreign parent, which include my own three. These bi-cultural kids are known as "hafu" or halves - a pejorative term that's normal here. They include celebrities and sports icons, such as tennis star Naomi Osaka. Popular culture idolises them as "more beautiful and talented". But it's one thing to be idolised and quite another to be accepted.

"Look there's something you need to understand about how Japan works," an eminent academic told me. "In 1868 the Samurai surrendered their swords, cut their hair, put-on Western suits and marched into the ministries in Kasumigaseki (the government district of central Tokyo) and they're still there today."
In 1868, fearing a repeat of China's fate at the hands of Western imperialists, reformers overthrew the military dictatorship of the Tokugawa Shogunate and set Japan on a course of high-speed industrialisation.
But the Meiji restoration, as it's known, was no storming of the Bastille. It was an elite putsch. Even after a second convulsion of 1945, the "great" families survived. This overwhelmingly male ruling class is defined by nationalism and a conviction that Japan is special. They do not believe Japan was the aggressor in the war, but its victim.

News 🎥 Japan floods: Country braces for more rain as death toll rises.
Tumblr media
Japan is bracing for more heavy rain after a weekend of flooding left at least 37 people dead.
More than 40,000 rescue workers in the south-west were still searching for survivors on Monday, after record rains caused landslides and rivers to burst their banks on Saturday.
Thirteen people remain unaccounted for, with 800 rescued so far, Japan's chief cabinet secretary told reporters.
Another 30cm (12 inches) of rain is expected in the next two days.
BBC Tokyo correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says that, while it is normal for Western Japan to bear the brunt of the rains sweeping out from the tropics during monsoon season, the last two days have seen truly extraordinary amounts of rain falling over the island of Kyushu.
How do I feel?
•Is a news that cares about Japanese people. Hope to be able to escape the flood crisis. Hope everyone is safe. I hope everyone is happy and healthy. Take care. ✌️💪🏻

Controversy Assignment (Standard Edition--list of opinions only)
When it comes to holocaust, the intentional systematic mass murder against an incredible amount of group of people, there are always people deny the existence of it. The most famous holocaust is about the killings of Jews and Chinese by the fascists. During the second world war, an estimate of six million Jews were killed by the Nazi Germany. Also, on December 13th, 1937, from 260000 to 350000 Chinese civilians were tormented, raped, killed by Japanese army after their capture of the capital city of the Nationalist’s government—Nanking. Still, there are people who want to deny the happening and other aspects of the holocaust and want to use other reasons to justify the considered war crime. Here are some opinions from both sides.
into Asia, first……
Tumblr media
Toshio Tamogami denies it because there is no evidence about people seeing Japanese soldiers harming Chinese civilians. He also thinks Japan never invades China because Japan only wants to free Asia as a heroic savior. (Wingfield-Hayes 2015)
Okuno Seisuki says it is unfair to blame Japan because it is the whites of the western world that colonize Asia. So the whites should take the blame. ( Shermer and Grobman 234)
Ishihara Shintaro says the Nanking massacre is a fraud because China wants to stimulate America to bombard the later two cities which are the target of the nuclear bomb. (Shermer and Gorbman 233-234)
Another side like John Rabe, he says he has seen a Japanese soldier raping a Chinese woman who has also been stabbed by the bayonet in the neck. (Erwin 2000)
back to Europe……
Tumblr media
Throughout the second world war, for the world-famous Jewish holocaust is denied by people like David Irving, saying that Hitler never has the intention of killing Jews because Eichmann has lied about it to free himself from responsibility. Also, he says he has translated one of the Himmler’s telephone notes proving the non-existence of the order of Hitler to kill Hews.(Sherman and Grobman, 54, 201))
Zyklon-B is the poisonous gas used by the Nazis to kill Jews in the gas chamber.
Fred Leuchter doesn’t think Nazis have used Zyklon-B is used to gas Jews because the German participants will also be affected and exposed to the poisonous gas. (Shermer and Gorbman, 130)
Also, deniers says the number of Jews killed has been overstated because Israel can receive much more compensation, having the base of finance. (Shermer and Grobman 106)
But from the side they want to protect, the SS statistician Dr. Richard Korherr is sure that 1496283 Jews have been sent to the death camps in Auschwitz and Treblinka where Jews will be gassed with Zyklon-B and Carbon Monoxide. (Shermer and Gorbman 128, 178)
On January 20th, 1942, during the Wannsee Conference, the Nazi officers have made the decision to deport nearly 11 million Jews to the forced labor gangs where most of them are expected to die during the forced labor. (Niewyk 34)
Adolf Eichmann proved that during the Wannsee Conference, the decision was surely discussed about the plan of murdering, destroying and eradicating Jews. (Niewyk 35)
Above are just a few opinions from both sides about the topic of holocaust. Efforts for neutrality are made to only show a simple cold-blooded display of few ideas and personal opinions or bias is surely to be removed. (which is part for the next final much more challenging assignment)
