Runyon Canyon Park, 2000 N Fuller Ave, Los Angeles (Hollywood), CA 90046
Iâve heard about the Runyon Canyon Park many times. Itâs one of the most popular hikes in LA, so it feels safe because youâll run into lots of people. There are also a few options within the park that allow you to vary the difficulty level of your hike. Then there are the 360 degree views. You can see downtown, the Hollywood sign, lots of mansions, Griffith Observatory, etc. Itâs far enough from the traffic that you donât hear cars driving by.
The land used to belong to a celebrity who built his estate there. The house was demolished. Go left to take the 2.7 mile loop counter-clockwise and go right for the clockwise direction. The counter-clockwise direction is harder (steeper climb up a rocky, narrow path). The loop trail takes about 90 minutes to complete and has an elevation gain of 748 feet. I spotted signs for the East Ridge, West Ridge, and Paved Fire Road. There were also some picnic benches.
Wear shoes with good traction because parts of the trail are slippery. Some of the trails are overgrown with weeds. There was a good variety of wildflowers. I spotted a lot of lizards, beetles, and flies.
I found parking about two blocks away on Fuller Ave. Interestingly, they had snacks and water by the entrance with payments by an honor system.
Dogs are allowed and should be on leash except for up near the top in the dog park area. Most people donât have their dogs on a leash anywhere in the park. Bicycles, smoking, and alcohol are not allowed.

Plant, I could kick myself. I meant to send you an ask before this guessing where the Harkleâs would be papped first lol. I was going to guess: Nobu Malibu, Little Beach House, The Ivy, Melrose Ave, Craigâs, Mr. Chow, Cecconiâs, Gracias Madre or Runyon Canyon. I truly didnât expect a messy and desperate faux altruistic outing where they both looked homeless. I overestimated them đ
We often do.

The Lay of the Land: Hollywood is a Real Place
As we start this new decade, weâd like to return for a moment to our roots.
Despite myriad myths and legends, and different ideas about what âHollywoodâ is, in actuality, Hollywood is a real place, one thatâs been inhabited by real people using real land to create their lives and dreams for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Settled by some, passed through by many more, the reality of its location, geography, and pioneers cannot be separated from its history.
It is a part of the territory we know as Southern California, the Los Angeles Basin. Part of the City of Los Angeles, although that wasnât always so. It has a real and varied geography: flat parcels divided by grids of north-south and east-west streets; hillsides with canyon passes and winding roads, views and vistas. Not much water, unless you count the reservoir (man-made Lake Hollywood).
That geography, and manâs part in using (and sometimes rearranging) it, makes up one of the fascinating stories detailed by the photographs in our Hollywood Photo Archive (hollywoodphotographs.com). In particular, the galleries devoted to aerials, streets (Highland Ave, Hollywood Blvd, Vine Street, Sunset Blvd), canyons (Laurel, Runyon), neighborhoods (Outpost, Hollywoodland) and even oilfields, showcase how varied the landscape is and how its residents have used it for over one hundred years.
Native peoples of the Tongva/Gabrielino inhabited the land, although they moved from location to location in search of food, water, and shelter. Then came settlers who divided the land into large ranchos through Spanish and Mexican land grants. Next were Americans and European settlers who divided the land into parcels for agricultural use, followed by further subdivision for residential neighborhoods. Commercial thoroughfares provided locations for businesses to serve the residents. These activities were linked by transportation routes of wagons, railroads and streetcars, and most infamously, the automobile, which for better or worse, seems to remain our favorite to this today. Most of these paths of travel can be seen quite clearly in historic aerials and on maps.
The varied landscape of Southern California attracted a creative group called âmovie makersâ, bands of intrepid entrepreneurs who used the fields, deserts, mountain passes, and nearby beaches as locations for their âphotoplaysâ, a new form of storytelling.
In the coming weeks, we will continue our exploration of those galleries in the collection which highlight various facets of the place that is Hollywood. How did people get around, what did they do for a living, where did they work and play, and why? Photographs illuminate the physical patterns of life: the relationship of neighborhoods to work, shopping to entertainment, institutions to socializing. Why is the old Bette Davis adage about âtaking Fountainâ still relevant today? Because itâs still rings true! Where do you end up if you do?
Through these blog essays, our aim is to further make connections, investigate the microcosm as well as the big picture, of what it was and is, really like to live in this one-in-a-million city called Hollywood, at various points in time.

It was on this date. June 26, 2007 @pharoahemonch Realeased Desire his the second solo album. The album comes eight years after the rapper's critically acclaimed solo debut, Internal Affairs, which followed the break-up of Monch's former group Organized Konfusion. After a short stint on Geffen Records, a number of labels began a bidding war for the rapper, including Eminem's Shady Records, Denaun Porter's Runyon Ave. Records, Bad Boy Records and Sony Records. In early 2006, it was announced that Pharoahe had signed a deal with Steve Rifkind's Street Records Corporation for the release of his second album. The first song released from the album was "Let's Go", produced by Black Milk. "Let's Go" was featured as the B-side on the album's first proper single, "Push", released in September 2006. A music video for "Push" was also released in late September 2006, and has received play on MTV Base. The video is set in the New York City blackout of 1977. A ten-minute internet-only video for the track "When the Gun Draws" was released exclusively to AllHipHop.com on January 3, 2007. Desire features production from Monch, longtime collaborator Lee Stone, The Alchemist, Denaun Porter, Black Milk and Sean C. Album guests include Erykah Badu and Denaun Porter. The single Desire is featured in the video game Madden 08. https://www.instagram.com/p/CQl0H7uNG0X/?utm_medium=tumblr

One of those homes that definitely stands out - especially on this coast.
When you see it in person next to Wattles Mansion & Park, it DEFINITELY stands out, like something was plopped right out of Kalorama in the sliver of the Hollywood Hills between Nichols and Runyon canyons.
So where do I start?
Impressive level of detail here, manages to look new and classic all at once.
Thereâs something very stately and old world rich person about painterly wallpaper in the dining room. This is something you find in Beverly Hills, or Holland Park.
Trying to figure out whatâs going on here - were the columns and arches an add-on? Vaguely Moorish in a Neoclassical.
Ahh yes, the classic kitchen remod circa 2003.
Something deeply magical about large cabinet vanities, manages to distract from an otherwise âblehâ bathroom.
Ye Olde Cape Cod Motorcourte
And weâre back to the imposing front, which is aggressively close to the street if youâve been by this place.
Itâs well-priced (far less than $1k/sq ft) mostly because itâs a home out of place - the sort of folks who would purchase this property probably wouldnât want hordes of dog owners next door at the public park. The provenance is sketchy - it appeared in Rebel Without A Cause but you donât exactly think of this house when you think of the movie, and a previous owner was the gentleman who brought the Beatles to America - not an A-list name in his own right. And for this price - you do want an upgraded version of that original kitchen and the same level of care and detail upstairs as you get downstairs.
So the listing remains up, and who knows. Maybe itâll find the right buyer who can restore it properly.
