what’s runic magic in CoL? :0

Runic Magic is sorta a weird mix of elemental, physical & spiritual magic. Able to either manefest/create objects OR enchant a item.

It existed way before Animus did (in my wof universe) & it has a few sub sets. One of them being the psyche based one, which may or may not evolved into the Animus we know today- (but at this point it literally became it own thing that we really can't call it Runic anymore can we?)

As forit consequences of using it. Here's the thing, there's only consequences IF YOU USE IT FOR EVIL! Which is why a lot of tribes (especially the Gaiawings) have strict rules about it.

Now it isn't truly powerful, but if used correctly, it can be. But it can be powerful in 2 ways, helpfully or... dangerously...

Also objects enchanted by/created by Runic-born dragons are referred to as "Runes" & there's a few types of them. Here's the ones currently: Elemental, Spiritual, psychological, & physical.

Psychological Runes are considered as "threats" & are SCRICTLY to be handled by trusted individuals. Anyone who DARES uses ANY Psychological Rune for evil will be considered a terrorist & thrown down into the pits of the dammed.

Thats... kinda it ig? Idk this concept has been with me for awhile since my screb days & recently I just stated to make lore for it.

Here's some Epic/ Odyssey stuff I think would be cool/sad.

1. Odysseus not aging and experiencing time differently on Calypso's island, so he has to deal with his little sister Ctimene being older than him when he gets home.

2. Argos being a month old puppy that Ody and Penelope got to be a friend for Telemachus.

3. Ctimene having been newly pregnant with Eurylochus's daughter when he left.

4. This is less a headcanon and more of a detail in the Odyssey. Athena magically putting Penelope to sleep whenever she was up late crying.

5. Stolen headcanon, but what if Odysseus thought Penelope was Helen when they met because all he knew about Helen was that she was the most beautiful girl in the world.

6. Circe having magic runic tattoos to mark her power, and moly temporarily giving Ody those same tats

Is there any specific literature you could recommend for those who want to learn more about the pre-Christian culture in Finland? (In Finnish or in English!)

I can link both. I have some personal faves but they are only accessible through our university's accounts...

The first page is a website with multiple good texts about this subject. It is the site of Jaakko Häkkinen, which if you google him you can see that he is a credible source. There are also texts about subjects like language and history.

This article (in Finnish) discusses the claim that Finland had ancient kingdoms. I also listened to this podcast episode from Yle Areena about it (in Finnish).

Yana Borodulina's master's thesis Suomalaisten uskomustarinoiden yliluonnolliset olennot ja niiden nimityksien alkuperä (2016) (in Finnish) is a very good text if you want to read about what ancient Finns believed in (without Kalevala pseudo-Finnish stories!)

An article about the Finnish "bear cult": THE BEAR AND THE YEAR: ON THE ORIGIN OF THE FINNISH LATE IRON AGE FOLK CALENDAR AND ITS CONNECTION TO THE BEAR CULT by Marianna P. Ridderstad (in English) was very fun to read! I will include it only because I love that they mention the Finnish 13th month which has been lost to time. This one is short though.

An article in English with the absolute basics of the ancient Finnish religion, made by Anssi Alhonen from the politically independent organization Taivaannaula.

Now while I cannot give you recommendations on physical books and only have PDFs (we are very digital at our university I guess) I can tell you what to avoid when looking for these books in stores or in the library. A credible book about pre-Christian culture in Finland would NOT promote:

Finnish runic writing. If there were runes found in Finland, they were imported from Scandinavia.

Finnish pre-Latin alphabet. Nothing like this has been found to this day.

"Finnish people descended from the Mongols"/"Finns are mongoloid". Modern genetic technology says otherwise. Put the book down immediately if it says this (or don't, who am I to tell you)

Describing the pre-Christian culture as "vulgar" or similar words. (This point may be ignored if you have good media literacy)

Using the Kalevala as a credible source for Finnish culture.

Additional: beware of texts written by a specific type of people. I would avoid people who do not cite sources. (I have stumbled across so many Neopagan witches who just write stuff like "ancient Finnish spells" which cannot be found in any archive. We have real spells too! No need to make up history)

what map are you using?

The Wastelands! Ranchclan is usually super lush and pretty at least in the camp gardens, but it is a semi-post apocalyptic world with a diminished twoleg population, and lots of trash and left behind junk. I made the save before the Ruins camp update, and if I knew enough about coding Id move them there. Id love to get into it to do more stuff like add in more traits, mods! but thats practically runic magic to me.

…or the one where everyone had a soulmark that disappeared when they met their soulmate, but Stiles and Derek met when they were too young to do anything about it.

So once again, Stiles came up with a crazy and risky plan. If the alpha didn't see how capable the incubus was of accompanying Derek in his rut, Stiles is going to prove him wrong. He was going to show the alpha that they could have the best wild, feral sex of their lives. The werewolf wouldn't have to control himself and depend on those medicines anymore. And that Stiles would be sated with energy for months. Also there was something in Scott's books called "knotting".

And Stiles needed to experience that firsthand.

I wanna talk about how DEEP the lore of League of Legends actually is. Because while some people might be confused by the events of some things that happened in Season 2 of Arcane, the series itself is less so pulling from our own earthly history, but instead that of the history of Runeterra.

Let me tell you about the tale of Azir:

“The youngest and least-favored son of the Shuriman emperor, Azir was never destined for greatness. He was a slender, studious boy who spent more time perusing the texts collected in the Great Library of Nasus than training to fight.”

Azir befriends a slave and the two of them bond over their love of ancient texts and magic. Eventually Azir is so enamored with his slave friend that he names him Xerath and appoints him to be his closest adviser.

After a series of cataclysmic events that resulted in Azir being in a position to become the new emperor, Xerath convinced him that “to stand as ruler over the entire world, Azir would need to be all but invincible, a god amongst men – an Ascended being.”

Azir agrees to undertake a dangerous ascension ritual, unaware that Xerath has actually been studying the dark arts and was seething with jealousy, hatred, and rage for being a slave.

“At the height of the ritual, the former slave unleashed his powers and Azir was blasted from his place on the dais. Without the protection of the runic circle, Azir was consumed by the sun’s fire as Xerath took his place. The light filled Xerath with power, and he roared as his mortal body began to transform.”

“But the magic of the ritual was not intended for Xerath, and such awesomely powerful celestial energies could not be diverted without dire consequence. The power of the Ascension ritual exploded outward, devastating Shurima and laying waste to the city. All that remained of Azir’s city were sunken ruins and echoes of its people’s screams on the night winds.”

“Azir saw none of this. For him, all was nothingness. His last memories were of pain and fire; he knew nothing of what befell him atop the temple, nor what became of his empire. He remained lost in timeless oblivion until, thousands of years after Shurima’s doom, the blood of his last descendant spilled onto the temple ruins and resurrected him. Azir was reborn, but was yet incomplete; his body little more than animate dust given form, held together by the last vestiges of his indomitable will.”

Azir comes across a woman who was stabbed. By using his powers he is able to resurrect her and heal her of her wounds.

“And with that act of selflessness, Azir was lifted up in a column of fire as the magic of Shurima renewed him, remaking him as the Ascended being he was meant to become. The sun’s immortal radiance poured into him, crafting his magnificent, hawk-armored form and granting him the power to command the very sand itself.”

“With the power and prescience of an Ascended being, Azir summoned an army of sand warriors to march alongside their reborn emperor saying; “I will reclaim my lands and take back what was mine!””

I had to edit a lot of that down and find respective screenshots that emulate the scenes that were being referenced… but I wanted to do this because I think it helps explain some of the stuff going on in Arcane.

Arcane is VERY MUCH drawing from its own lore and history of Runeterra. When you start digging into the lore you’ll start seeing these direct parallels and references, and some of the oddities start to make sense. I know we like to joke about Viktor being hextech Jesus, but his arc and storyline more closely resembles that of Azir than of Jesus.

League of Legends lore is FILLED with stories like this. Stories that are referenced by Arcane in many subtle ways that won’t be obvious to outsiders. This stuff runs DEEP, and the creators of Arcane know the lore enough to use it to tell their own stories with it as a guideline and reference.

Additionally it’s helpful to know that magic in League of Legends lore is a sentient thing that corrupts and WANTS to be used. This is why Heimerdinger hypothesizes that mages who use the Arcane magic often go astray and that this temptation to use the magic to commit world ending cataclysms “might be a property of the Arcane itself.”

As Rise says:

"Magic wants to be used, It is all around us, emanating from the first fragments of creation. It wants to be wielded. And that is the true challenge on the path we both walk. When you realize what the magic wants, how eager it is... Well, then the difficulty isn't how to begin wielding it. It's knowing when to stop."

Arcane tells the story of Viktor, a weak boy who makes a friend over their shared interest in studying and learning. Who goes through a metamorphosis after a cataclysmic event, saves people with his benevolence and newfound power, is ultimately betrayed and killed by his closest friend, and is resurrected through the use of (Warwick’s) determination and will to live, reborn into a godly figure who can control armies of his followers.

Look buddy, I get annoyed at wizards just the same as any mun mun mun mundane human, but if everyone shot at a wizard every time they did something obnoxious there'd be no wizards left. No offense, wizards.

Burning that herb in the crystal ball. Rolling the occult joint the likes of which wizardkind had never seen. Runic reefer tended by the most spaced out spellcaster on the eastern seaboard. Smoking the kind of stuff that gives you illegal divinations, that wicked wicca-kush liable to make you live deliciously. Skunky six leafed plants watered with pure alchemy, you know what I mean.

That's not legal in very many states, still federally restricted. If you can live with the idea of being a narc you can report it through standard LEP Recon team channels.

Seriously though I cannot tell if I'm doing something wrong in my writing or if I am just fighting this giant trope that's been built up. The mage's college in my campaign setting has always had this thin veneer of being this really cool magical wonderland and a single peek underneath reveals wanton disregard for the life, safety, and well-being of its students. Putting students in huge piles of debt just to force them to pay back the same institution through what is effectively indentured servitude/free labor for the academy.

There are people here who make horribly dangerous weapons just because they know they'll be payed well for them. The graduate necromancy courses are so literally cutthroat that there is a running problem of people killing each other for the success of their experiments. The party was indebted to the academy for so much gold that they could not feasibly pay it off within a single human lifetime (but that's fine, because they had more than that, so we're sure we'll get it back :) ). They have been asked to gather unicorn horns. There was a Rakshasa (!!!) preying on students because he got summoned there and nothing was done about it until it became inconvenient for administration! The school collects hair clippings so that it can track students through scrying spells!!

And like yeah these are all separate instances and many of them are all initiated by individuals within the university but! The school lets all these things get swept under the rug and gives the perpetrators a slap on the wrist to keep up appearances while doing nothing to remedy the patterns!

All they seem to get out of it though is "hogwarts" which drives me mad because on it's good days it's the Unseen University actually thank you very much!

Even now that they're starting to fear the institution they seem to think they've been singled out. Like this is some kind of anomaly. And the point is it's not and I don't know how much more hamfisted I can get than "The guy who killed his boyfriend to become a lich got off scott free while you are paying for trying to stop him, and the only way out was for a punk kid (the kid who got murdered here, yeah the boyfriend we were just talking about) to find a loophole that he only knows because he spent almost ten years of his life here getting into various forms of trouble, and also bribing someone who may or may not be a fey which we all know from the last campaign is a very safe plan."

Hello! I'm sorry to bother you with this, but I have a question: At any point in mutant history, was there any mention of whether the Maximoff siblings can speak German? I've had that question stuck in my head all day.

Hey anon! You can bother me any time you like, no need to apologise. I like talking about this stuff. It's not like this question and others like it are remotely googleable either. I wish they were.

Obscure confirmation, though doppelganger has been an English loanword since the 1600s

Outside of the X-books I'm not the biggest expert on Maximoff history, except when Magneto shows up of course. To the best of my knowledge Pietro hasn't been shown speaking German on panel, though Wanda has once that I know of, in Excalibur #38, shown above. She knows at least that phrase and understood Kurt's question so I think we can take her at her word. I'd assume that would extend to Pietro too, but no confirmation.

They grew up in Transia (a fictional Balkan country) and have been shown speaking Romanian, which is the majority language there. Pietro has spoken Russian with some fluency before, and French for Wanda (I don't remember the issues sorry.) The Marvel wiki says that Hungarian, German and Symkarian are popular in Transia so it's not unlikely they speak or understand at least some of those languages, as well as Transian' depending on who you ask.

Wanda is a very accomplished magic user, so I'd assume she knows a fair amount of Latin, Asgardian runic and spoken language, and various other tongues with heavy magic association. Then again, I'm pretty sure she knows a spell that's basically a universal translator so she can be a true omniglot when required.

As I mentioned earlier, there's big gaps in my knowledge so if anyone knows more please chime in!

Summaries:

Paeliae - Magic politician

A mage living in the period when the god vs mages war starts. (8 BD, before dissolution) He is a politician, despite having no patience for the ages old elvish mages who currently run the council. He is obsessed with leaving a lasting legacy even if that means dying today. As such he is vehemently against the concept of immortality, During the war he helps negotiate with the gods to come to a truce. 27, He/Him.

Xaeren - Runic Inventor

Xaeren designed 42 of the 47 runes and uses them to protect himself from the vengeful goddess Schaeres. When she finally attacks him, Xaeren realises there were very few limits to what he could do with the runes and sets out to kill Schaeres, both as payback and just to prove that he can. But some things can’t be done alone…

Kell - Magic Student

Xaeren rescues her from a small dock town and gets her a place at the Lysandri school of magic. Kell is thrust into a world of magic and has to keep up with the help of Xaeren’s tutoring, but as she begins to fit in with the mages there, her loyalty to the criminal godkiller Xaeren comes into question.

Tyro - Traumatised Sorcerer

lives in the modern day (about 1500 PD, post-dissolution). They have recently escaped from the abusive cult that adopted them as a child, with their adoptive brother Apollo. They are a sorcerer, so have born magic, but also we’re taught to use runes by the cult. They never used them because of trauma but they could if they wanted to. They are currently running from the cult and trying not to be noticed by the government, who take in all sorcerer children so they can have a monopoly on magic. They have found a family in some other sorcerers living in an abandoned manor outside the city. 17, They/them

Apollo - adopted older brother of Tyro.

He took care of them and the others in the cult, despite being abused severely himself. Despite the trauma he is a very powerful runic. He is currently being attacked by, and looking for other cults like the one he was adopted into to help other children like him. 21, He/They

Ez and Rin (~1000 BD)- The gay bois, who definitely don’t start the apocalypse.

Ez (short for Ezemhaziel) is the god of refined magic. He falls in love with Rin when he is researching to create the runes. He is somewhat of a Prometheus figure, as he brings the first magic to mortals by teaching Rin.

Rin is a gardener working for one of the altic kings, who equally loves Ez for his magic and creativity. Ez and Rin end up working on the runes together. The other gods get mad that Ez gave magic to a mortal, and they let the mortals murder Rin. Ez is mad. This will spiral and cause the start of the godly war, which then ushers in the godly mages war, where 3/4 of all mages die and the gods are removed from the world.

Daimion and Marsh - the regretful and the merry murderer

Daimion and marsh grew up together being trained for an elite military unit, which they both got into. While in the unit they are ordered to fire on civilians and they do it, but later Daimion regrets killing innocents and leaves the unit without notice. He goes on to find the daughter of one of the people he murdered that day and the woman who has been taking care of her. He protects them fiercely and tries to make up for what he did. Marsh however, fully commits to the ‘I kill people as a job, I might as well enjoy it’ and ends up being so recklessly violent that he is imprisoned in the highest security jail in the country, which he later breaks out of to commit a massacre, then returns to his cell like nothing happened. This occurs a couple of times until Daimion has to go get him. - Marsh intro - Marsh lore

Just a brief overview of some of the things I am currently working on. I plan to post more about the magic systems and historical events of the world. I also post maps.
