Australia and France were named the HSBC SVNS 2024 Champions
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/australia-france-were-named-hsbc-svns-2024/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/australia-france-were-named-hsbc-svns-2024/
Australia and France were named the HSBC SVNS 2024 Champions
At the first-ever Grand Final in Madrid, Franceâs men and Australiaâs women were declared the HSBC SVNS 2024 Champions following the most dramatic and intense rugby sevens competition in history. Following an incredible 19-5 victory against Argentina in the menâs final to deprive the HSBC SVNS 2024 League Winners the double in Madrid, France will head into their home Olympic Games with a lot of confidence.
After winning in Vancouver, France ended their 19-year cup drought. They sealed the victory with two tries in the second half, and Rodrigo Isgro of Argentina was sent out late for an illegal tackle.
Meanwhile, with the Olympics approaching, a rejuvenated Fiji defeated New Zealand for the second time this weekend to take home bronze, matching their best finish of the year. Australia won the womenâs division after defeating France 26-7 behind a hat-trick from Maddison Levi, who gave her team their first cup victory since Cape Town in December. Australia was the best team all weekend in Madrid, defeating New Zealand 21-19 in an exciting semifinal comeback. Australia was the HSBC SVNS League leaders for nearly the whole season until falling short to fierce rivals New Zealand in the last round in Singapore.
In retaliation for losing to the same opponents in the pool round, the Blacks Ferns Sevens defeated Canada 26â14 to win the bronze medal. The top four teams from the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 competed against the teams placed ninth through twelfth in the SVNS 2024 promotion and relegation Play Off competition.
Samoa and Canada lost their spots on the HSBC SVNS series in the menâs HSBC SVNS Play-Offs, but the USA and Spain kept their spots thanks to wins. Following their respective victories over Germany and Chile in the Challenger Series, Kenya and Uruguay will be joining them.
China won the womenâs play-offs and will join South Africa on the SVNS Series the following season. In the qualification final, the newcomers overcame Belgium 33-0, while South Africa was crushed 22-0 by hosts Spain. Brazil defeated Poland 38â7 with a commanding performance, and Japan defeated Argentina 26â12 to keep their spots on HSBC SVNS 2025. The Play Off losing teams will go through the regional qualification process to compete in the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2025. News for The Daily Rugby
âWeâre finally getting some pay for our hard work, which is good,â Maddison Levi of Australia stated. Weâre finally building; the Olympics are so close. Itâs always a hard struggle between the two, and the fact that we havenât defeated New Zealand since Perth, in my opinion, simply shows that we can succeed.
They did a great job with the framework, in my opinion. Sevens is an exhilarating experience, and as an athlete, you canât always perform at your best. Our coaches have our utmost confidence and trust, and I believe that their efforts are truly evident on the pitch. the bravery and readiness of each person to delve deeply throughout training.

Old corrals and a resilient tree
Sunday 8th October
Bosnia and Herzegovina remain an unpopular choice for visitors from the rest of Europe. I have watched a steady stream of traffic slowly wobble past on their way for weekend lunch in nearby Lukomir, 99% of them are Bosnian, and Iâve seen only one other campervan, and yet a couple of hundred kilometres west on the Croatian coast itâs almost still high tourist season. This is a perfect time to visit here, pleasantly warm days, and the autumn colours about to arrive. There isnât even a Cicerone book about these mountains, though there is about all the surrounding countries. I have offered..
Bosnia suffered more than most countries in the Balkan War. Many of its beautiful hills and valleys had mines laid and it is common still to see warning signs not to wander off paths. That certainly doesnât encourage outdoor tourists, though it is less of a problem than when I was here 5 years ago. There is no problem in the National Parks, and areas like where I am now. The country is on its last step to join NATO, projected now for 2025, and is a potential candidate country for EU accession.
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire it has a rich culture and history. It is also religiously diverse, with a 50% Muslim population, 30% Orthodox Christians, and 15% Catholic Christians.
Sarajevo was ranked in the top ten best cities in the world by Lonely Planet in 2009, and though international tourism has grown in the last ten years, it is still way below most of its neighbours.
Today, this little part of the country was at its very best. The sort of day that inspires you to write about it.
Roja and I sauntered, as one does on a Sunday after a late Saturday, up the other side of the valley. Here there are as many old stone walls as we have back in the Lake District. And again here, most of them seem pointless. We found an old track, clearly something more than that, as it was walled, so perhaps an old road. Once we gained some height we stumbled on old corrals bordered by the stone walls.
Shepherds clearly took their flocks higher in the summer months, and the risk of wolves and bears was greater when their populations were so much higher. This is about 1750 metres, and almost a different world to the one below. There is so much for an outdoor enthusiast here, with the relatively gentle gradients of the slopes, pretty much everywhere can be accessed on foot or by mountain bike, and the views are superb. The snow would provide a whole load of new opportunities.
We came to the top of the hill we were aiming for, and perched exactly on the summit was a magnificent and greatly resilient, tree.
This area, and the local villages of Umoljani and Lukomir, are amongst the oldest villages in Bosnia. Umoljani was destroyed in the war, but was soon rebuilt, along with a new ecological ski complex at Babin Do, just 30 kilometres from Sarajevo.
Itâs tourism that has breathed new life into these villages, particularly Lukomir. Its ragged road, 15 slow kilometres from Umoljani, is part of the attraction.
There arenât many areas of Europe left like this, still wild after all these years. Many rural areas are becoming wild for a different reason, that of depopulation. But this is a superb example of the a relatively undiscovered gem.
The last day of the World Cup Pools, and the last game, just in case I needed to justify to myself the time that watching sport occupies, Portugal provided the answer. I coached at one of their clubs, in Porto, in 2012 where three of this squad are from, most notably Pedro Bettencourt, who was in the Senior Colts (under 18s) then. I coached the level below, the 16s.
The reality is that the vast majority of the Portuguese population wonât be aware of what happened, it is a country dominated by football like few others, to its detriment. My next visit has been shoved up the agenda so as I can spread the word a bit more. Now the ball is passed to World Rugby, who, unlike on previous such occasions, must act to give more exposure, more games, to these teams that have entertained us so much in the last five weeks. Iâm not confident they will sadly, but, letâs at least enjoy this moment.
And a word too for something that the Portugal have done better than anyone else in the tournament, and thatâs their shorts. Whoever it was said, âShorts, theyâre not important, itâs whatâs inside them that counts..â was wrong here. Those shorts were special.
(and, the quote is of course from Barnstoneworth Unitedâs coach, in Golden Gordon).

All Blacks captain Sam Cane to retire from international rugby
New Post has been published on https://thedailyrugby.com/sam-cane-to-retire-from-international-rugby/
The Daily Rugby
https://thedailyrugby.com/sam-cane-to-retire-from-international-rugby/
All Blacks captain Sam Cane to retire from international rugby
Sam Cane, the captain of New Zealand, said on Monday that he will retire from Test rugby at the end of 2024, capping a 12-year international career that included a World Cup victory. Having played 95 Tests â 27 as captain â the 32-year-old has decided to focus on spending more time with family and sign a long-term contract with Suntory Goliath in Tokyo, New Zealand Rugby stated in a statement.
Since South Africa defeated the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup final last year, the team has not played, and Sam Cane had already taken a sabbatical in Japan. Cane stated that the opportunity to sign a three-year contract with the affluent Tokyo club was too good to refuse. I had to weigh up everything and, in the end, with a young family, it seemed like the best decision to help set up our future, he stated.
It was a very hard one because I love the teams that I represent here in New Zealand. Sam Cane has announced his decision to retire from Test cricket at the end of 2024, some 12 years after making his All Blacks debut. Sam Cane has made the decision to sign a long-term contract with and concentrate on spending more time with his family.
As arranged, Sam Cane, who is on sabbatical and eligible to be selected for the All Blacks in 2024, will return home at the conclusion of the current Japanese club season. Sam, Iâm grateful for all the years and moments youâve shared with the black jersey. Complete legend. Cane has two Super Rugby championship winning teams with the Chiefs and won the World Cup with New Zealand in 2015.
Sam Cane to retire from Test rugby in best decision for his family
However, he did not always have an easy time leading the All Blacks after replacing Kieran Read as captain in 2020. Cane had moments of poor form and was substituted in the 28th minute in the Rugby World Cup final the previous year. There had been calls for his dismissal due to the threat posed by players like Ardie Savea and Dalton Papalii. In 2022, New Zealand lost its first Test series at home to Ireland, and a few weeks later, they were shocked to lose to Argentina in Christchurch. These events occurred under his term.
I genuinely appreciate the opportunity I got to wear the captainâs armband. It was a great pleasure and privilege, and Cane learned a lot from it as well as experienced personal growth. The decision of Sam Cane to accept the new contract in Japan was addressed âat lengthâ by the recently appointed All Blacks coach Scott Robertson. I fully understand the reasons behind his decision and support him,â stated Robertson.
Being the captain demands more of you physically and mentally because of the position he plays. That makes what heâs accomplished over such a long time so amazing. I applaud him much for seizing this chance. After the current Japanese club season concludes, Cane will return to New Zealand and be available for selection for the All Blacks for the remainder of 2024, although he will not be captain. Itâs part of the natural process that happens in rugby, Cane stated. I had my time as captain and it was a huge honour and privilege Rugby News the daily rugby
Sam Cane, the captain of New Zealand, said that he will leave the game at the end of 2024 after agreeing to a three-year contract with Suntory Sungoliath of Japan.
At the conclusion of the Japanese season this summer, Cane will rejoin the team and be available to play for the All Blacks for the remainder of the season.
Sam Cane to retire from Test rugby and pursue club career in Japan
Following New Zealand Rugbyâs external agreement to release him from the last year of his contract, which extended to the end of 2025, the 32-year-old will subsequently return to Japan.
Cane stated, âI was given a great opportunity when Suntory Sungoliath offered me a three-year contract.â âI had to consider all the options, and ultimately, it seemed like the best course of action to help establish our future as a young family.â Making his All Blacks debut in 2012, the flanker has participated in 95 Test matches, 27 of which he has captained, and he assisted his nation in winning the 2015 World Cup. However, after New Zealandâs 2023 tournament loss to South Africa, he became the first male player in World Cup history to be sent off in a final. Since then, the All Blacks have not participated in a match, and Cane will not lead them when they play next. âThatâs just a part of the way rugby works naturally.
I will remain true to myself even if I have the good fortune to be selected for the All Blacks this year. Cane became a Suntory Sungoliath employee last year after choosing to exercise his Waikato Chiefs contractâs sabbatical option. After discussing this at length with Sam, I fully understand the reasons behind his decision and support him, stated All Blacks coach Scott Robertson.
Sam Cane, the captain of New Zealand, said on May 13 that he will retire from Test rugby at the end of 2024, ending a 12-year international career that included a World Cup victory. Read more about Sam Cane to retire from international rugby
