HOW TO NOT SURVIVE HIGHSCHOOL
LYING to his friends about having a girlfriend was definitely not on his ‘how to survive highschool’ list and now, he has to convince his biggest rival that will surely laugh at his face, to fake date him.
PAIRING. rugby player+rival!sunghoon X rival-fem!reader (mentions of the rest of enha, aespa’s karina and boynextdoor taesan)
GENRE. childhood enemies to fake dating to lovers, angst, comedy, fluff and idk what more.
WARNINGS. young sunghoon’s a bitch, so is young y/n, also older sunghoon’s a bitch and so is y/n, manipulating here and there, misunderstandings, miscommunications, definitely curse words (seventh graders already know how to curse here!) , horrible humor, ik its weird but all of the mentioned idols here are the same age! (lmk if i missed something pls!)
WORD-COUNT. 10.4k+
NOTE. ok fine! bully me for not knowing how to make a pretty cover, its the story that matters though, right? anyways besties i really dunno when will be my next update so please be patient!! i miss writing and being here 24/7 honestly but its just been really hard for me.
“i need you to fake date me”
“no”
“please?”
“are you seriously begging right now?”
“yes?”
“that’s fun, get on your knees and beg more”
“are you nuts? i’ll never do that”
“fine then, pay me for that”
“how much?”
“two”
“dollars?”
“billions”
if there’s one thing sunghoon can say about himself is that he’s quite an organized person, therefore he made a list for highschool.
a list that will help him survive his last years in highschool and will help him stay sane at the same time.
he called his list “how to survive highschool”, creative, right?
he’s been following his list and so far managed to survive just perfectly.
staying in rugby team with his friends? check!
“sunghoon! catch!” he heard a voice calling him and saw a ball coming right at him, he caught the ball and ran with it, then passing the ball to riki, his friend and teammate who scored the game and ended it with a win.
“that was a good one! take a break and return in thirty minutes!” the rugby team’s coach clapped and sent the players off for break.
“hey! i got your exam grades here! come collect them!” jungwon, one of sunghoon’s friends waved the exams to show the players he got the them in his hands.
sunghoon went up to jungwon and took his own.
get high grades? check!
“i got A+ again!” he looked at the grade and excitedly smiled.
“ugh, you’re making me sick being the nerdy rugby player” jay, another friends of his rolled his eyes.
“you’re just jealous my grades are higher than your chances with your crush” sunghoon joked.
“oh you—“ “enough! no fighting on break time” heeseung cut jay in the middle of his sentence.
“let’s just get something to snack, it’s lunch time anyway” sunoo suggested and they all nodded.
“you guys ready?” riki asked before they entered the hallway.
get popular enough so students will freak out when they see you? check!
“sunghoon! i got you this chocolate snack! please accept this and enjoy it” a one random student handed him the chocolate snack.
before he could take it, jake snatched it and smiled, “i’ll take that, thank you” and left the girl and sunghoon speechless.
“dude what the fuck?” he asked his friend.
“it could be poisoned for all you care” jake shrugged but proceeded to take a bite from the snack as they kept walking.
“let’s just sit right there!” jungwon pointed at one lunch table as they entered the cafeteria.
“really? right in front of where y/n is sitting?” sunoo whispered in his ear.
“sure, let’s do that” sunghoon replied and started walking towards the table.
“um, i’ll go grab the snacks” riki said and ran to get the snacks.
“did he just-“ “oh, it’s going to be interesting” jake smirked and watched sunghoon as he walked really closer to you, who was sitting with your back towards him.
“so, what are your plans for the weekend?” your friend karina asked as she took a bite of your food.
“oh i don’t really know, probably chilling at home and—“ you were cut off middle sentence by someone bumping into you, causing you to spill some of your food on your uniform.
“what the fuck?” you turned around and saw the person behind it, “should’ve known it was you, park”
get yourself a rival so it’ll be more fun and interesting….? check!
“sorry, couldn’t see you there” he smirked.
“just go away” you rolled your eyes at him and turned to your friend who looked awkward as hell.
“sure” he started to walk but bumped into you again, causing you to spill more food on your clothes.
“oops! that happened again” he chuckled and continued to walk to the table.
“that’s it” that was your last straw.
you got up and took your water bottle, “y/n dont—“ your friend tried to stop you but it was too late already.
as you got closer to sunghoon, you poured all your water on him.
“what the—“ “sorry!! i slipped over and spilled some on you!!” you replied with a smirk and stormed off.
his friends who were watching the whole thing from afar, walked closer to now drenched sunghoon and started laughing.
“damn, that was fun. do it again!” jay cheered.
“here sunghoon i got you a towel!” a student walked up to him and handed him a towel to dry himself.
“thank you, i’ll take it” sunoo said and took the towel.
sunghoon glared at him, “what? you’re already used to being drenched by sweat, it’s the same thing, no?”
“i hate him” you rolled your eyes.
“say, what’s the deal with you and sunghoon? you never really told me and i just assumed he annoys you because he’s a nerdy rugby player,” she chuckled, “but it seems more than that”
“park sunghoon has been on my ass ever since seventh grade” you sighed.
“why? what happened on seventh grade?” she asked, leaving everything she was busy on behind and crossing her hands to focus on you and you only.
before seventh grade you and sunghoon were best friends, hell, your parents could’ve sworn that one day you’ll end up marrying each other.
you were stuck like a glue, always around each other and doing basically everything together, no one could tear you apart.
until, seventh grade happened.
you were the top student in class, you aced everything, from math to arts and received praises from all teachers. for the last few days of school, the teacher wanted you to show the whole school your arts project.
you drew your favorite view, which was your house garden, the teacher got so excited over the drawing and decided she wants you to show it to everyone else too.
a day before the last day of school, you were busy doing the last touches of your art, sunghoon was busy doing his usual, which was to annoy you.
“sunghoon stop! i need to focus” you scoffed.
sunghoon shrugged, “but i’m bored”
“go play around with others or something” you sighed.
he shook his head, “not when i can annoy you!”
he walked back and forth, even twirled around, until he became dizzy and accidentally pushed you over your drawing, making it look like a big mess over the canvas.
you let out a yelp and looked at it with teary eyes.
“i….i’m sorry!” he quickly said.
“get out!” you yelled without even looking at him.
“it can be fixed! just a few little—“ “i asked you to get out! you ruined my drawing! how will i be able to show it to everyone now?” at this point you started crying.
you didn’t show your unfinished and ruined art in front of everyone, instead it was sunghoon’s drawing that was shown to everyone.
your teacher saw the ruined art and decided to change the plans by taking sunghoon’s project and showing it to everyone.
jealousy was eating you alive. it was supposed to be you up there on stage, showing the project to everyone and getting the compliments, you deserve that after working so hard.
it was sunghoon’s fault, all of it.
before you walked away with your parents, sunghoon called you a few times. at first you ignored his callings, but your parents, unbeknown to the whole story behind it, stopped your tracks and told you to go to sunghoon.
with heavy steps you walked closer to him, “what do you want?” you coldly asked.
“i wanted to apologize” he took a deep breath.
“great, you just did”
“wait—“
“we’re good now, i forgive you” you lied. you just didn’t feel like hearing his excuses and explanations.
“wow, really?”
“yeah” no.
although you told sunghoon you forgive him, things became really awkward between the two of you.
summer vacation arrived and you did your best to ignore him, except the times where he left you no choice and just randomly showed up at your house.
eighth grade was cool between the two of you, but you still held strong feelings against him.
he tried his best to overcome the weird awkwardness between the two of you, you’re too important for him to let go. he was honestly so scared of entering highschool without you by his side.
the second half of eighth grade was the last straw between the two of you.
you started crushing over someone in your class, and started hanging out with him, slowly getting close to the guy.
sunghoon, who was carefully watching you from behind, didn’t like your new crush, he seemed like bad news to him, getting close not only to you, but to other girls as well.
your parents, who were strict that time, warned you about dating a guy at such young age, and sunghoon had to do what he had to do.
“park, what the fuck?” you came up to him and pushed him.
“what?” he asked surprised.
“why the fuck did you tell my parents about him?” you shout.
“oh,” he rolled his eyes, “so it’s about him”
“of course it’s about him! you know about my long time crush on him!”
“he’s bad news y/n” sunghoon tried to warn you.
“no, you’re bad news! i should’ve known not to forgive you at all” you scoffed and walked away.
“y/n, wait!” sunghoon called you but you were faster than the light and suddenly was nowhere to be found.
“uh oh” jay, who was there to witness everything pat his friend’s back, “you fucked up”
“yeah, thanks jay i really needed that” sunghoon rolled his eyes.
“really? going behind her back and telling her parents about some guy? you could’ve just talked with her about it” jay snapped.
“it’s not that easy”
“it sure isn’t, and so will be your attempts to talk with her”
jay was right, sunghoon tried everything to get to talk with you, followed you everywhere, sent you numerous texts and calls until you had to block his number, even showed up at your house a few times. nothing helped.
so sunghoon, being the cool teenager he is, decided to move on. he doesn’t need you anymore anyways.
nineth grade came and so did a new student that sunghoon couldn’t take his eyes off of.
slowly he tried his best to get closer to her and spending more time with her, he was so close to confess his feelings towards her.
“did you do that on purpose?” she asked, nothing but hatred in her eyes as she looked at sunghoon.
“do what…?” he asked confused.
“did you tell the whole school about my family issues?” she raised her voice.
“what? no! i would never—“
“forget it, you’re such a jerk!” she yelled and stormed out.
“wait!!” he called her and was about to run after her but his eyes caught a glimpse of a person smirking.
he clenched his jaw and moved closer to the figure, “what the fuck did you do?” he asked.
“nothing, i don’t know what you’re talking about” the person shrugged.
“don’t play dumb, y/n. i know you had something to do with it” he rolled his eyes.
“still don’t know what you’re talking about” you shrugged again, “maybe someone’s just taking a revenge on you, i don't know” you added and left with a smirk.
“i hate you choi y/n!” he shout. “it’s mutual park sunghoon!”
“oh now i get it! yes girl! give him the revenge he deserves to get” karina cheered and you nodded.
“but, don’t you think he ruined your chances with your crush just because he was jealous?” she asked and you glared at her, “i mean, even your parents could’ve sworn you’d end up getting married”
“even if he was jealous, he should’ve confronted me about it” you replied and she nodded.
“you’re right” she sighed, “but what if he was, i don’t know, scared?”
“are you seriously on his side now?” you asked in disbelief.
“never!” she hugged you and you giggled.
“let’s get you cleaned up, i think i have an extra uniform in my locker”
“oh no, walking in school hallways like that is like just straight up asking to be bullied”
“i won’t let anyone bully you bae, let’s go”
“by the way! all of you are invited to my brother’s wedding, no single hoes are invited though, that includes you sunghoon” heeseung chuckled,
“sweet! when is it?” jake asked.
“in a month”
“what? you cannot be serious!” sunghoon complained.
“sorry, your single ass will not be able to handle this wedding” heeseung shrugged.
“even riki has a partner before you” sunoo laughed.
“guys just realized sunghoon is really the only one single here” jungwon added which made everyone laugh and make jokes about him.
“all of you can shut up because i actually do have a girlfriend”
heeseung was obviously joking about sunghoon not being invited because he’s single, but he was not expecting to hear his friend confessing that he actually is seeing someone now.
sunghoon was also not expecting that big lie to come out of his mouth, but it was already too late.
“what?” jungwon spoke first after the silence that surrounded after his confession.
“i do have a girlfriend” no sunghoon, you can still get away with it and say you were joking.
sunghoon’s list of surviving highschool has a lot of tasks still left untouched, but this one was definitely not, and was never written, as one of his tasks on his list.
lie to your friends about having a girlfriend? definitely not on the list, stop with the lies!!!
his friends looked at him in shock. riki dropped the spoon he was about to shove into his mouth, jake choked on his water and heeseung pat his back, jay almost fainted and jungwon and sunoo froze in their place.
“what?” sunghoon asked.
they all burst into laughter, “that was a good one! i almost believed you!” riki wiped his tears that fell down because of the amount of laughter he let out.
“i’m serious!” sunghoon scoffed.
“you? a girlfriend? sunghoon, i saw your ‘how to survive highschool’ list, you had a ‘no matter what, stay single until you finish highschool!’ line!” jay chuckled.
“i can break one line its not a big deal, besides, she’s definitely worth it” sunghoon smiled.
he’s talking about no one, no one comes to his mind at the moment, but he still keeps on with his lie.
“will we be able to see her before the wedding?” heeseung asked.
“a day before maybe” sunghoon nodded.
“hey! we’re already late for practice! get up everyone now!!” jungwon checked the clock and hurried everyone up.
sunghoon knows he fucked up, real bad. he never had a normal conversation with a girl in highschool, and let’s not forget about the fact that everyone talks to him as if he has some kind of royal blood.
the only real friendship he had with a girl was with you in his childhood. and you’re the only girl who can talk back to him without feeling threatened. wait, that’s it!
“i need you to fake date me”
curse him and his very awful impulse control.
as soon as sunghoon finished his practice he went to the library, figured he’d find you there and apparently he was right.
the book you were reading was long forgotten as you tried to process what you just heard.
“no” you replied shortly.
“please?” he sounded so desperate.
“are you seriously begging right now?”
“yes?”
“that’s fun, get on your knees and beg more” you smirked.
“are you nuts? i’ll never do that” he frowned and rolled his eyes.
“fine then, pay me for that”
“how much?”
“two”
“dollars?”
“billions”
“hell no”
“kiss my ass goodbye then” you shrugged.
“you’re unbelievable”
“said the one who barged into the library and started begging me to date him”
“yeah, it’ll help you become popular” he slightly nodded.
“right, you’re already popular and have multiple fans or whatever, why don’t you just ask them?”
“it’ll just make things worse!”
“fuck off sunghoon, i’m not going to fake date you and help you because of some stupid lie you told” you rolled your eyes and got back to reading the book.
he tried begging you once more but at this point you just decided to ignore him until he left.
“what the heck was that?” you asked yourself and shook your head.
“hey y/n!” you heard a voice calling you and you immediately recognized this voice.
it belonged to taesan, your classmate and also your longtime crush. taesan’s quite popular amongst the students, and surprising so, he’s not a rugby player.
you’ve made a pros and cons lists about your few old crushes and also made one about your current crush, taesan.
pros? he’s funny, smart, creative, caring, friendly, kind and would prefer to spend his free time in the library with you.
cons?
“hey sunghoon dude! didn’t see you there, what are you doing here?”
he’s sunghoon’s best friend. that is a BIG no no for you.
“just came to check something, studying again?” sunghoon smirked as he looked at you.
did he seriously wait for taesan to come so he could spend more time annoying you?
“yeah, it’s my studying with y/n time, we’ve been doing that for a while” taesan smiled widely and winked at you.
without even noticing your cheeks started to heat up. but your blushing cheeks were already noticed by someone who’s definitely going to use that against you.
“right, i’m not going to interrupt you two, enjoy!” sunghoon said as he gave you one last smirk before turning around and leaving.
“isn’t he so weird sometimes? i can definitely understand why you hate his guts” taesan chuckled and you nodded.
“how are you today anyway? didn’t see you that much” he smiled.
“so far so good, you?”
“great now that i’m here with you”
you tried your best to stop your racing heart beats after hearing what he said and making eye contact with him.
you just giggled and opened a book right away, “let’s just start with this book!”
after some time that felt like half an hour to you (but was actually two hours or so) it was time to go back home.
“let me walk you home” taesan suggested.
“it’s okay, i live closeby, if so i’m the one who needs to walk you home” you giggled.
“i insist”
you didn’t reply to him and just walked out of the library as he followed you.
“oh hey y/n, taesan!” you stopped your trace when you noticed sunghoon standing right outside the library.
“sunghoon? why are you still here?” taesan asked, emphasizing the last question.
“just walked by after dropping yeji at her friend’s house, also i promised y/n i’ll walk her home, right y/n?”
you looked at him confused but he gave you the ‘you better say yes now’ look, and besides, you didn’t want to bother taesan with the long walk.
“right, i completely forgot, i’m really sorry taesan, next time i’ll be the one to walk you home!” you said and he nodded.
“don’t worry about it!” he said, quite confused since he never saw the both of you getting along and actually walking home together, even though you live right across each other.
sunghoon took your hand and dragged you away from taesan.
“what the fuck park?”
“walking him home? seriously? your lazy ass could never” he teased and you rolled your eyes.
“fuck off sunghoon, why are you really here?”
“i’ve got a deal to offer” he stopped you from walking and you glared at him.
“no”
“you haven’t heard it yet”
“i don’t care, it’s a no from me, i can never trust you” you scoffed and started walking away.
“i’ll help you to get close to taesan!” he said and you froze for a second, “i don’t need your help”
“oh but you do” he smirked as he figured he got your weakness point, “you’ve been acting awfully trying to hide your little crush on him”
“what do you need?” you asked, half convinced.
“a month” he said straightforwardly.
“are you—“
“a month of fake dating and then i’ll let you tell everyone you broke up with me and broke my heart and whatever you want” he licked his lips, “i’ll help you get closer to taesan too”
“i need a day to think about it” you sighed.
“fine” he said, full of hopes and prayers.
as you arrived you bid your goodbyes for the first time in years, and it never felt so weird as much as it just did.
as you entered the house you took a quick shower and ate, right after that you ran to get your phone a called karina.
“i think you should do it, a month wouldn’t be so bad, plus, he did say he’ll help you get close to taesan” she said.
“can i really trust him though? he ruined my chances with my crush once already” you groaned.
“you’re right, don’t trust that guy”
“but he’s also the only one that could get me close to taesan”
“right again, trust him fully and agree to that deal”
“you’re not helping me at all!!” you complained.
“i don’t know bae, i guess that if i was you i would’ve probably go with what my heart says”
“cliché much, aren’t we?”
“i didn’t know what to say!”
“i guess i just…”
“really? are you for real? is it really happening right now? i need you to sign this contract right now before you regret” sunghoon’s eyes widened and his lips formed into a little smile.
you rolled your eyes, “don’t make me regret this”
“okay okay, i won’t, let’s just find a spot where we could talk” he said and took your hand.
he dragged you to an empty classroom and closed the door.
“so,” he spoke, “we need rules”
“no shit sherlock”
“can you stop being an actual bitch for a second and hear me out?” he spat and you rolled your eyes.
“i’ll be walking you home, mornings and afternoons no matter what” he said.
“does that really matter? i mean, no one sees us” you sighed.
“that’s what you think, my friends are stalkers it’s actually scary”
“whatever”
“we’ll be posting pictures together which means we’re going to have to go on date—“
“im gonna stop you right there” you cut him off middle sentence, “you can just use pictures from pinterest”
“what?”
“there’s no chance im going on dates with you” you argued.
“you agreed to this fake dating, you need to face the consequences”
you groaned and he continued, “kissing is not prohibited, you can kiss me whenever you want, if it’s necessary”
you felt like throwing up hearing this sentence.
“who’s gonna buy that? just yesterday you were bumping into me and acting like a total bitch in front of everyone” you rolled your eyes.
“it’s as simple as that, we’ll say we’ve been forced by our parents to come as a couple to an event and we had a deep conversation about our past and after a while of reuniting i asked you out and we decided to hide our relationship until now” he shrugged.
“wow,” you clapped, “you thought about it the whole day yesterday didn’t you?”
“no…” he scratched his nape and looked everywhere but at you.
“sure” you nodded, completely not believing what he just said.
“anyways it’s all settled, we’ll be posting a picture today after school” he said and was about to leave the classroom.
“one more thing,” he said, “pda is a must, therefore you’d have to give me your hand and we’d have to go hand in hand to classroom”
“just say you want to hold my hand, i’ll take that into consideration, but i’m not interested” you asked annoyed.
“you wish someone would actually want to hold your hand out of his own will” he rolled his eyes.
“you haven’t touched a single soul in your entire life”
“just shut up” he sighed.
“never as long as your annoying ass is right besides me”
he just groaned and took your hand.
“starting now” he nodded, “it’ll make everyone confuse until we reveal our relationship”
“yuck, even calling it a relationship is making me want to throw up”
“hope your stupid brain knows it’s mutual but whatever, just don’t act like that when we’re together”
walking through the hallway while everyone is whispering and glancing at you was never a problem to sunghoon, it was a big problem for you though.
you tried letting go of sunghoon’s hand to stop the whispering and glancing but he held you tighter.
“it’s okay, calm down i’m here with you” he whispered.
as much as you’d like to deny it, it made you feel somewhat safe.
however, it’s the park sunghoon we’re talking about. your worst enemy.
“is that supposed to make me feel better?” you whispered back.
“and we’re here, outside your classroom” he changed the subject and stopped right outside of your class while everyone else kept looking at the two of you.
“i’ll wait for you after class” he winked and left a peck on your forehead before leaving to his classroom.
you so wished you could wipe it off at the moment. or at least, you think.
“what the fuck did i just saw?” karina walked up to you as soon as sunghoon left.
“we have a lot to catch on” you sighed and dragged her inside the classroom.
“and you agreed?!?”
“ms. karina and ms. y/n, would you like to share to your class what were you talking about?” the teacher knocked on the desk.
“no, we’re sorry” you said quietly and the teacher went back to teaching.
“you told me to follow what my heart says!” you whispered-yelled to her.
“i didn’t think it’d say to agree to it!!” she replied back.
“well i did, and now i’m stuck with the worst person ever”
“maybe he’s not that bad”
“get out karina”
“can’t, we’re in the middle of a class” she shrugged and you groaned.
“so you’re now dating your worst ever enemy, the infamous woman in this highschool, choi y/n?!!”
“yes jake, i don’t know why it’s so surprising to you” sunghoon rolled his eyes as he took a bite from his lunch.
“surprising only to him? sunghoon, just a few days ago you called her an attention seeker bitch, now you’re telling us you’ve been dating for a few months already?” jungwon asked, concerned.
“well we did great at hiding didn’t we? our parents told us we should sign to drama classes”
“nothing here makes sense” jay shook his head.
lying to his friends about his whole relationship life? was definitely not and never will be on his list but he couldn’t care less about the list anymore.
“life doesn’t make sense, jay” sunghoon sighed, “it just happened, now i can’t stop thinking about her, it’s like i want to spend every minute with her”
“ew, not in front of my salad” riki gagged.
“although it makes no sense to me, i’m happy for you sunghoon, so proud of you for finally getting along with someone” sunoo pat his back.
“hey what do you mean by that?”
“from childhood friends to childhood enemies to lovers, that sounds like an actual pretty good story genre” heeseung crossed his arms and nodded.
“can’t believe you haven’t told me anything about it!” taesan, who for the first time in a while joined their lunch table, lightly pushed sunghoon, completely in disbelief.
“you’re right, i should’ve told you about it before” sunghoon nodded.
sunghoon’s a bad friend. a very, very bad one.
a few weeks ago he had a conversation with who he considers as his best friend, but how could he face him now after this conversation?
“hey hoon! i wanted to ask you something” taesan bit his lips, a bit anxious to start the conversation.
“yeah dude, what’s up?” he asked.
“i know you and y/n are….not on good terms, but i actually started spending some time with her and i’m really interested in her” his eyes lit up from excitement just by talking about you, “wanted to ask you if that’s okay that, you know….”
“yeah for sure! even though i hate this person with all my heart, i can’t decided on your life, can’t see how and why you’re interested in her but whatever, it’s yours” sunghoon shrugged.
“thanks sunghoon, i’m really glad i got you as my friend” taesan hugged sunghoon tightly.
sunghoon definitely knew about taesan’s little crush about you, and the day he told you that taesan has a little crush, he actually meant you.
back to today, sunghoon feels like his whole life was tearing apart.
how could he betray his friend like that? after everything taesan did to him. from helping him with studies to even paying for the things he couldn’t.
taesan shook his head and smiled weakly, “whatever makes you happy sunghoon” he said.
sunghoon was expecting him to shout at him and get mad about it, but was actually surprised he took it well somehow.
‘i’m doing this for you too’ sunghoon thought, after all, he has the perfect plan for taesan and y/n.
“thanks taesan” sunghoon hugged him tightly and pat his back as a sign for asking for forgiveness.
“that’s not gonna work, too many people are looking at us” you complained as soon as you got out of your last class for the day and noticed sunghoon who was already waiting for you outside.
“with popularity comes the consequences” he shrugged and you rolled your eyes.
“enjoy lovebirds!” jay shouted as he walked past you.
“let’s go” he extended his hand out for you to hold it but you shook your head.
“i promised taesan i’ll review his essay he wrote”
“you can do it tomorrow—“ “can’t, plus you said you’ll help me with taesan, we can go on your stupid fake date later”
sunghoon rolled his eyes and sighed, “fine, i’ll walk you to the library”
when he noticed you smiling he couldn’t help but feel that weird feeling of excitement, but then he realized you were not smiling because of him.
“hey y/n!” taesan smiled warmly at you when he noticed you, “and sunghoon” he added quietly.
“hey taesan” you called with a wider smile on your face and sunghoon nodded.
“i’ll pick you up later then” he said and walked away.
“so…you and sunghoon huh?” taesan asked.
“ugh, don’t even— i felt everyone’s eyes on me throughout the whole day” you groaned.
“you don’t seem that happy with that”
“because i’m not! i’m so tired of it already, i should’ve known not to agree to that deal”
“what deal?”
“uhhhh” you freaked out, how stupid can you actually be??
“nothing!! no deal” you giggled nervously.
“if you say so” he shrugged and opened his laptop to show you his essay.
“why dont you just tell him?” karina asked you over the phone.
“and what will i say if he asks why i agreed to the deal?”
“simple, ‘i did it because i want sunghoon to help me date you’, like that”
“sure, it’s that easy” you rolled your eyes.
“how was your first day dating sunghoon anyway?”
“he took me to get some ice cream, he actually remembers my favorite taste”
“yeah i saw on your instagram story, if i didn’t happen to know that this is all fake i’d actually believe it” she said teasingly.
“can’t believe i’m saying this but” you sighed, “he’s not that bad to hang out with”
you expected a reply from her right away but all you heard was silence.
“karina?”
“i can’t believe this conversation is not being recorded she finally spoke.
“forget that i said tha—“ “no no no! please continue”
“well….he was actually super nice and even paid for my ice cream, even found a nice spot and brought me his jacket since it was starting to get cold” you said calmly.
“y/n”
“hm?”
“you might end up falling in love with him instead of taesan” she said and you scoffed.
“are you forgetting that he literally ruined my life?”
“i said what i said!” she argued.
eventually you ended the call and drifted off to dreamland.
“so….”
a few days passed since you revealed your (fake) relationship and today was the first day you sat with seven other people at your lunch table.
“you and sunghoo—“
“stop it”
“sunghoon and yo—“
“shut it!”
sunghoon’s friends tried to ease up the awkward situation but were shut off by you and sunghoon.
“we just think it’s weird that’s all!! it’ll pass sooner or later” jay chuckled.
“so y/n, how’s life?” riki asked.
“seriously?” sunghoon raised his brow.
“babe, it’s okay,” you almost gagged after using the nickname on sunghoon, “life’s fun, you never know which surprises awaits for you”
you raised sunghoon’s hand and showed everyone your locked hands.
“ew, don’t need to use those nicknames and act all cheesy here” jake teased.
“you wanted to meet my girlfriend didn’t you? here she is” sunghoon spoke.
that’s when it got to you. sunghoon lied to his friends about having a girlfriend! why did he choose you though? out of hundreds of students.
“you’re right” heeseung nodded, “if you already know each other so well, why don’t we ask you questions about sunghoon and you answer?”
“baby you don’t have to—“ “it’s okay, hit me with the questions”
“sunghoon’s favorite color?”
“white”
“his favorite season”
“used to be winter, it’s autumn now”
“favorite ice cream flavor?”
“um” you froze for a second.
“ah ha! got you”
“coffee”
“aw man, you suck!” riki said in disappointment after you answered all the questions correctly.
sunghoon in the meantime was busy staring at you and daydreaming.
when did you become so pretty? with your cute eyes that lit up every time you answered a question correctly, and your lips that formed into a smile when you noticed you won over his friend’s questions.
how come you remember those details about him as well?
he had tons of questions, but curse his inability to communicate well, he’ll probably leave those questions unanswered.
the only thing he does know, is that he’s scared to fall in love with you.
“babe? are you ready to go? let me walk you to the field now, you have practice”
you called him and he zoned out, for a second there he really forgot this is all fake.
the way you’d look at him and call him babe, it made him feel so weird, he had never felt like that before.
“yeah” he slightly nodded and got up.
when both of you arrived at the field he stopped in front of you and frowned.
“what if i’ll just take you on a date instead of practice?” he asked.
“sunghoon what the fuck? we’re all alone here nobody sees you, you don’t need to act all lovey dovey” you snapped back.
“right” he said, almost sounding too disappointed.
“i’ll go back now to the library, taesan’s waiting” you smiled and started walking away.
“pull yourself together sunghoon” he sighed and entered the field.
“hey” you called taesan as you saw him already sitting at your usual library desk.
“hey y/n!” he called you back excitedly.
“missed being with you after school, i went on too many dates with sunghoon lately” you sighed.
“yeah” he whispered, you could hear a bit of disappointment in his voice but he shrugged it off quickly, “hey how about instead of studying we’ll go hang out, i got pretty tired of reading today”
“sure! of course, i would love to!!” you excitedly replied.
taesan got up and held your hand, “let’s go watch some movies”
practice ended and sunghoon went straight to the library without even showering first. he couldn’t wait telling you how his friends couldn’t stop talking about you and praising your (again, fake) relationship.
he looked at the clock and it was usually around the time you and taesan would finish and get out, only this time you were nowhere to be found.
sunghoon started to freak out, what if something bad happened to you? did taesan leave you alone? what if he did something bad to you?
no, no. sunghoon was just freaking out.
he tried calling you, but your phone was turned off, you weren’t available.
he ran all the way to your home and asked your mother if she happened to see you, but got a negative answer.
“why, is she missing?” your mother asked and tried to stay calm.
“no of course not!” sunghoon awkwardly said, “we’re just playing hide and seek that’s all, i was wondering if she walked all the way here to hide in her room”
seriously sunghoon? that’s the best thing you got?
“alright, have fun!” it seemed like it made your mom believe him!
“y/n where the fuck are you?” he whispered to himself.
he decided to call taesan, “if he’s not answering i swea—“
“hey dude, what’s up?” his friend on the other line answered calmly.
“do you happen to know where y/n is?” he straightforwardly asked.
“yeah, she’s right next to me, didn’t she tell you we’re going to watch some movies?” taesan’s voice stayed calm but on the inside he was smirking.
taesan 1, sunghoon 0.
“she probably forgot or something” sunghoon giggled, “when do you plan on coming back?”
“don’t know, but don’t worry dude, i’ll make sure she gets home safely”
“yeah, okay” sunghoon said and ended the call.
“who was that?” you asked.
“your boyfriend, didn’t you tell him we’re here?”
“oh no, i forgot about it”
“yeah he was worried sick”
“i think we should head back now” you let out a sigh.
“okay, sure” he nodded and both of you got up.
you don’t know why you said it instead of staying the whole night just watching random movies with your longtime crush.
what the hell did this fake dating with sunghoon do to you?
taesan walked you until it was already safe for you to walk alone, you argued with him that it’s fine and your house was a minute away, he tried insisting but you didn’t budge.
both of you knew why you wanted to walk over to your house alone.
sunghoon 1, taesan 1.
you really tried using you muscle memory and walk to your door with your eyes closed so you won’t have to meet with—
“well who do we have here”
“i really didn’t want to see you here now” you sighed and opened your eyes.
“i was worried sick! why didn’t you just send me a text or whatever?” he spit out and you never really realized how irritating his voice is until now.
“what are you? my mom? why do i have to tell you my whereabouts?” you snapped.
“we’re dating, of course—“ “hell no we’re not, this whole thing is fake and you know it, i dont owe you shit, park”
for the first time sunghoon was stunned and speechless because of you. he did not know what to say or even process what the hell just happened. and why the fuck was he so annoyed by you going to the movies with taesan?
“if you dont have anything to say just go” you sighed and just like that he left.
you finally got inside your room and laid on your bed, thinking about your last events and how stupid it was of you to go home early because of that fucking rat who was ‘worried’ over you.
your phone buzzed and when you looked at the caller ID you smiled.
“just checking that you arrived safely”
“i’m not a five years old kid taesan,” you chuckled and got up to sit on the edge of your bed, “besides, it was a minute walk from where you left me”
“alright, was just checking if you were still alive” he giggled.
“hey taesan”
“hm?”
“let’s hang out more, i had real fun today”
“all i was just asking is for you to text me if there’s a change of plans! i was really worried because i knew i had to pick you up but you were nowhere to be seen” that is how your morning started, for the past few days it because a routine for you to have a morning and after school walk with sunghoon, and each morning you’d have a little fight.
this time, even though you hate to admit it, he’s right.
“you’re right, i should’ve told you beforehand, i just got super excited to go out with taesan so i forgot about it, besides you’re supposed to be happy for me, i’m finally getting closer to my crush” you huffed.
“thank you, and yeah, i’m super happy” he rolled his eyes and you nodded.
“another thing, heeseung’s brother is having a wedding in less than a month and we have to go there together, as a couple” he said, “after the wedding we’ll plan the break up and will part our ways”
“sounds like a plan to me” you shrugged.
“no matter what happens, please just show up to his brother’s wedding, i think heeseung already favors you so much, he always did but i always warned him not to get too close to you”
“obviously you did” you rolled your eyes, “but i will do it, for him and for his happiness”
“thank you” he said sincerely.
“wow, didnt know you could be genuine”
“just shut up and continue to walk”
two weeks passed and as much as you hate to admit it, dating sunghoon park isn’t something that bad.
you went to all kinds of ‘dates’ together, that one amusement park date was your favorite.
“no no no no! don’t go too high, y/n hold my hand tight!” he yelled on one of the roller coasters you forced him to get on, “i think i’m gonna throw up oh no, here it comes! i hate it here”
while he was busy yelling, you were busy laughing your ass off at him. he was cute, you admit.
it reminded you of that time you went to an amusement park together when you were kids, he remained the same, nothing changed.
as you got tired of the amusement park, he took you to a restaurant and both of you sat one in front of the other.
“i like it here, this place is designed so beautifully” you said.
“not as beautiful as you” he mumbled.
“hm?” you asked and he shook his head, “nothing”
“you know, it wasn’t so bad today, i really had fun” he started speaking, “reminded me of our childhood”
“yeah, i thought about that too” you nodded.
“i kinda miss it” i kinda miss you, he wanted to say, but he felt like it’d be too much.
sunghoon that day realized his strong feelings for you never left, and probably never will. your past antics were long forgotten and all he wanted was to hold you in his arms and tell you how much he loves you, and he have always had.
“i kinda miss it too” you replied and it was like an unspoken tension between the two of you.
none of you would talk after that and just walked home in silence, but it was a comforting one.
“girl, he’s super like, into you, and you’re so like, into him too” karina said after you told her about the amusement park date.
“am not! i’ve been actually going out with taesan a lot, i really really like him” you smiled.
“whatever you say girl!”
“i actually am going to hang out with taesan today, i’ll update you on everything, bye bae” you smiled and ended the call to get ready for your hangout with taesan.
an hour later he sent you a text that he’s already waiting and you got out of your house right away.
“you look, really pretty” taesan was being so stunned by your beauty that he forgot how to talk.
“thank you” you smiled, “so, where are we going?”
“a new arcade just opened and i know how much you love arcades so i just thought of testing it out”
“oh my god you really do know me so well!!” you took out your phone to text sunghoon about your whereabouts.
you became more responsible and it suddenly didn’t bother you as much to text him about it, it almost became a habit of you.
‘off to the new arcade that opened up with taesan, don’t you worry about me’ you texted him and closed your phone.
as you arrived your eyes roamed around the big arcade and suddenly you looked like a five years old child who just got their first ever vanilla ice cream.
“what are we waiting for? let’s just go!!” taesan cheered and you clapped.
after hours and hours of playing you both went to sit down by the nearest park there.
“it was so fun today, we have to do it again!” you grinned and taesan nodded.
it suddenly became so quiet and you noticed taesan was staring at you for too long.
“are you okay?”
“i know about you and sunghoon,” he spoke, “about your fake dating thing”
you were too stunned to speak.
“i heard you arguing on the same day we went to the movies, i wanted to check on you if you arrived safely but i noticed you and sunghoon talking and i couldn’t help but eavesdrop” he shrugged.
“oh” was all you could let out.
“i was actually glad to find out that this whole thing with you and sunghoon was fake”
“what do you mea—“ “i like you y/n, a lot” he cut you middle sentence and you felt so weird hearing his confession.
“oh! there you are!” before you could even respond to taesan you heard a voice calling the both of you.
you turned around and saw the one and only, park sunghoon. what was he doing here?
a few days ago taesan asked to meet up with sunghoon. he confessed to him about knowing your fake relationship and told sunghoon he was going to confess to you.
“i like y/n, a lot, you already know that” he said.
“what’s your plan?” sunghoon asked.
“asking her out after going to that new arcade” he exposed his plan, and sunghoon’s cue to stop the confession was a simple text from you about your whereabouts.
sunghoon for the second time chose to be a shitty and egoistic ass friend, and prevent his so called ‘best friend’ from confessing to you.
but of course sunghoon wouldn’t tell you all of that.
“me and y/n were planning to go on a date today! i guess she forgot” sunghoon smirked.
“cut it sunghoon, i know you’re not really dating” taesan clenched his jaw.
“doesn’t matter, i still made us a reservation for this new restaurant” sunghoon rolled his eyes and dragged you away.
you were too shocked by the whole scene that only when you arrived back to your home you realized what happened.
“did you just—” you sighed, “ruined my fucking chance with taesan?” you felt your blood starting to boil.
“what do you mean?” he asked confused.
“taesan just fucking confessed and you just fucking showed up and dragged me away, what the fuck were you thinking?” you shout.
“y/n i—“
“you what, sunghoon? want to ruin my life once again? just like you did with my painting from seventh grade and my crush from eighth grade?” you snapped.
“you seriously still hold that against me? we were in seventh grade for god’s sake!”
“and it ruined my life ever since then! did you become your family’s disappointment? because i did, oh! and funny enough, not only that seventh grade made them disappointed in me, but also my stupid crush on eighth grade that you decided to snitch on!” you looked at him in disbelief.
“what about my crush from nineth grade then, huh? not only you lied to her and told her i spread the rumors about her, you made me look like the bad guy and the other students refused to talk to me for months! you basically made everyone back away from me!”
“and rightfully so” you rolled your eyes.
“y/n, look” sunghoon ran his hands through his hair and sighed,
“save it park, i don’t want to hear from you ever again, i had a blast ignoring you for the last few years and i’ll continue having a blast if it’ll continue that way” you lied through your teeth, “we’ll only talk when necessary and cut ties after heeseung’s brother’s wedding”
“y/n” sunghoon called you again but you already walked away and entered your house.
sunghoon knows he fucked up, and he realized there were so many miscommunications between the two of you over the past few years and he didn’t know how to fix it.
meanwhile you, the minute you stepped inside your room and closed the door, you started crying.
you didn’t know how to feel with yourself. you were glad that sunghoon cut you off before you could answer taesan, because surprisingly so, you were about to reject him.
taesan is a nice guy, he really is, and he really was your longtime crush, until your old crush entered your life again.
you realized you gained back your feelings the moment sunghoon opened his mouth to genuinely talk with you, in fact, those feelings never really left.
you found yourself so focused on the way that his dimples would always show while smiling and talking to you, or the way his fangs would show up with every smile he gives you.
but you couldn’t help but let your blood boil after his whole ‘i’m not going to let y/n have another chance with someone’ show, it made you think about your past and you hated it.
the next few weeks felt normal to everyone but you, sunghoon and taesan.
you and sunghoon acted as if nothing happened between the two of you when someone you know happened to be around.
when you two were alone? hell, you won’t even shoot a glance at him.
and as for you and taesan, you told him it’d be better if the both of you would take a short break for a while, just for you to adjust everything.
sunghoon refused to let go of you so easily once again, he tried everything, calling, texting, even calling your parents to ask if you were home and maybe they can tell you to pick your constantly ringing phone up.
it all felt like a deja vu now, but not the good one. you were getting distant again and it scared him that the same thing will happen yet again.
“thank you for coming” sunghoon welcomed the person into his house.
“why are you so stressed? oh no don’t tell me you got someone pregnant”
“jay, i sometimes wonder if your last braincells are just off to go travel or something” sunghoon groaned.
“well, you seem so tense, what is it?”
sunghoon decided to tell jay everything from A to Z, they’ve been best friends for long and he feels like he can trust him wholeheartedly, plus he had to get some help from someone.
“i knew it the moment you told me both of you are dating! it felt so unreal”
“thanks a lot jay, it really helps”
“well, i think im getting a little deja vu for eighth grade”
“exactly! i don’t want this to happen again! i know i fucked up but i….” sunghoon sighed, “i’m willing to do everything as long as i won’t lose her”
“okay first of all, ew dude that’s so cringy” jay said in disgust, “second, i think you just need to give her some time, i’m sure that if you still haven’t heard about her and taesan dating, she might as well was about to reject him”
“then why would she get so angry at me? it doesn’t make sense”
“you took a whole ass opportunity from her to try and sort her things out, of course she’d be pissed”
“right”
“try to talk with karina maybe, she might help you out on this one” jay pat his friend’s shoulder, “besides, the wedding is in a few days and you told me you made her promise you to show up no matter what, it’s not like she can run away from you for long”
“i hate that you’re so right” sunghoon groaned and jay shrugged, “i’m just saying whatever comes to my mind, whenever it comes to my mind”
“what do you want, park?”
“wow you really sound like y/n now” sunghoon sighed as he saw karina looking at him uninterested, “i guess she already told you what happened”
“yes, she did” she also told me she’s scared because she actually has feelings for you, she wanted to say. but its not her place to say it anyway.
“how….is she doing?” he asked quietly.
“why do you care?”
“oh no please don’t make it harder than it already is” he mumbled under his breath.
“because, i need to talk with her, a serious conversation”
“oh no don’t tell me you caught feelings”
“how did you— nevermind, please tell her that i’ll be waiting for her, and i really want to sort things out between us” he sounded so desperate it scared karina.
“i’ll see what i can do” karina nodded and he bit his lips and smiled.
“thank you, thank you, thank you, thank—“ “i get it you can go now!”
he nodded as he got his bag and went for another practice.
“hey bae how are you doing today?” karina hugged you as she sat on your bed.
ever since your last encounter with sunghoon you started missing a few classes here and there, you didn’t really feel like going to school and seeing sunghoon anyway. that’s why karina came to check up on you.
“same as usual, i don’t know”
“i know what you’re thinking” she said and you looked at her creeped out.
“relax, it’s nothing scary” she laughed, “i just know you’re thinking about him”
“am not!” you argued.
“yeah, and i’m queen elizabeth”
you can’t stop thinking about sunghoon, she wasn’t lying really.
you realized how messed up your whole story was. you need answers from him, you need the apology you’ve been waiting to hear, the confirmation that he misses you as much as you miss him. you need to hold him tight and never let him go again.
“fine, you got me” you sighed.
you wish you’d know how to sort things out without going crazy.
“he came up to me today,” she said and your eyes sparkled, “he asked me about you, he’s been so desperate to talk with you, he looked and sounded really sincere”
“i don’t know karina, i’m not sure if i’m ready to face him without getting angry again, it’s just that whenever i see him my blood just starts to boil when i think about our past”
“that’s your problem, you refuse to let go of your past” she put her hand on your shoulder, “just let it go, and get the answers and confirmation you need from him”
you decided not to show up at school ever since your conversation with karina.
sunghoon tried checking up on you multiple times but each time you’d lie to your mother who opened the door for him and told her to tell him that you’re sick. both of you knew it was wrong.
sunghoon was going crazy, his friends couldn’t stop asking about you and about your whereabouts and he could only lie and say that you’ve got really sick and that he’s been taking care of you.
he asked karina about you again and again, until she got tired and told him everything, about your wellbeing and your health.
he was so worried for you it surprised her, he was really acting as if he’s your real boyfriend.
karina would lie if she said she didn’t confuse him as your boyfriend for a while.
“here” sunghoon handed karina a notebook.
“what’s that?” she asked.
“i took some notes on this class, give it to y/n please”
“sunghoon, i’m not some kind of—“
“i know i know you’re not a delivery guy but, i don’t know how to give it to her in any other way” he sighed.
oh the poor guy, she really pities him.
wedding day came and sunghoon was going back and forth in his room.
will you be coming? should he pick you up? you promised him! if not for him then for heeseung!
at the end, jay called him and told him it was becoming too late and he should just come without you.
sunghoon left his house with a heavy heart and empty hands, that were supposed to hold you tightly and close to him.
“hey hoon! you came!!” heeseung welcomed his friend with a hug and a big smile over his face.
“where’s y/n?” he asked.
“oh y/n, she really wanted to come but—“ “but what?” he was cut off by someone else.
when he looked over his shoulder he found you, walking over to them and putting your hands together on sunghoon’s right shoulder.
“i was getting ready and it took me too long to come, so i just told sunghoon to go away so he won’t be late because of me” you smiled and planted a kiss on sunghoon’s cheek.
“i’m so glad you came!!” heeseung smiled widely and hugged you tightly.
sunghoon was still shocked seeing you there, first you walked in, looking gorgeous than ever in the outfit you put on yourself, then you went and put your hands over his shoulder and lastly, you kiss his cheek.
he froze and zoned out for a few seconds until you waved your hands in front of him.
“let’s get in! it’s about to start” you were about to walk in but sunghoon was quick enough to pull you back to him.
he was holding your waist and pulling you closer to him.
“first, you walk in here, looking prettier than any other person here, no offense to the bride, then you smile and kiss my cheeks. i don’t understand, what’s happening?” he asked, his face is closer than ever to yours.
“i don’t want to open it up now—“ “if not now then when?”
you sighed and closed your eyes.
“i only have one question”
“shoot”
“did you really regret what you did back then?”
“of course i did, i still do” he reached your hand to hold it, “look at where it got us”
“why did you ruin my chance with my crush back then?”
“you said only one question”
“okay so maybe now i have more”
“i did it,” sunghoon stayed quiet for a second, is this the right time to confess? “because i really liked you, and i still do” fuck it.
“when we started to fake dating i realized those feelings never left, everytime i look at you i just cant help it but smile, i think it’s way beyond just ‘like you’, i love you y/n” he let go of his hold on your waist and held both of your hands in his.
you stopped breathing for a second as you tried to process what you just heard.
“park sunghoon” you whispered and he hummed.
“i’m here baby”
“i hate you” you said and sunghoon could swear his heart dropped.
“i hate you for making me hate you so much to the point it ruined our friendship for so long” you continued, “you could’ve confessed your feelings and we could’ve been the best highschool couple by now”
sunghoon furrowed his eyebrows, he got so confused by your words.
“if you still didn’t get it, i happen to love you too, you dumbass” you laughed.
without giving you a warning he pulled you into a kiss with a big grin on his face.
it was a desperate kiss, as if he was waiting to do this for so long. both of you didn’t want to part away but you did eventually because of the lack of oxygen.
“i can’t believe we fucked this up because of this stupid painting in seventh grade” that was the first thing he said afterwards.
“you fucked this up and it’s not just a stupid painting!!” you argued and he laughed as he hugged you tightly.
“i’m joking, i’m really sorry for that, and for the crush thing in eighth grade too” he grinned, “but he was just not good for you, you had me the whole time and still wanted him”
you kissed him again and smiled.
“i was too blind i guess”
“can you two cut it off lovebirds? the wedding is about to start” both of you turned your heads and saw annoyed jay standing in front of you.
“sorry! coming” both of you said at the same time.
as you sat one next to each other, sunghoon interlocked your fingers together.
“hey” he whispered and you hummed.
“hearing ‘i love you’ from you really warmed my heart” he smiled, “just letting you know”
“oh really?” you asked and he nodded.
“i love you” you kissed his cheek.
“i’ll keep saying this until you’ll get tired of it”
“which is basically never”
jay groaned and turned to look at the both of you “can you please just stop being so lovey dovey oh my god”
“you were exactly like that on your first days with your girlfriend stop being such an attention seeker” jake rolled his eyes and jay hit him.
“shhhh!! why don’t we just pay attention to heeseung that’s crying right there?”
“just took a picture! will definitely use it to blackmail him!”
“poor little thing only wanted to get emotional in his brother’s wedding”
“soon to be us at sunghoon’s and y/n’s wedding”
and they lived happily ever after! i mean, as much as you can when you have those six people as your friends and karina’s nonstop questions about future kids.

Sunoo narrowed his eyes, clutching his textbooks even closer to his chest as he walked past the hoard of snobby rich kids. Their expensive pearl necklaces and diamond rings gleamed under the warm hallway lights, but no golden jewelry would take away how downright obnoxious they were.
"How could anyone be so loud right now?" Sunoo grumbled under his breath, pushing up his thin golden-framed glasses. Seriously though, he had a point. There was no reason for anyone at all to be screaming at the top of their lungs at 10 in the morning. But alas, here he was, rolling his eyes at the stuck-up rich kids.
The Academy had a pretty simple admissions system. Either you pay to get in, or you apply and get evaluated based on your application. Most of the students at the Academy were from wealthy families, so they obviously paid to be admitted. Sunoo, on the other hand, had more humbler origins.
To say that he worked his utmost ass off to even be able to apply was an understatement. It was almost patronizing to see all of these kids born with a silver spoon in their mouth act so carelessly.
They all acted so condescendingly, as if they didn't get admitted because of their father's paycheck.
"What's got your panties in a twist?" A new voice interrupted Sunoo's thoughts. It was his younger friend Riki, who threw an arm around his shoulder.
"Nothing," Sunoo murmured, tearing his eyes away from the group of popular kids.
All of them were the same. All arrogant, all pompous, all vain, all—
"Are you sure?" his other friend, Jungwon, joined. "You look a little bit—err— disturbed."
"I'm not."
Riki and Jungwon shared a look.
Okay, maybe not all rich kids were the same.
Because there were a few exceptions, such as—
"Are you still mad about that one time that snobby little Sanghyeok threw a ball at you?" Riki asked, blinking owlishly.
"No, what are you—"
"He's a rugby player, isn't he?" Jungwon thought aloud. "Geez, all the rugby players love tossing that goddamn football around, don't they?"
"Erm, actually, it's called a rugby ball," Riki corrected in a nasally voice.
"Whatever. It doesn't matter. Why would anyone throw those around? It's like a ball of concrete!"
Sunoo tuned his younger friends' bickering out. He'll admit it, he's just a little bit of a hater.
Among the snobby rich kids, there's definitely a few exceptions. Jay Park was a pretty cool guy, and so was Jake Sim. Sunoo could've sworn that there's one more person that he didn't mind too much... He just couldn't remember who....
"Watch out!"
It happened so quickly, because one moment Sunoo was lost in thought. And the next, a rugby ball was hurling at him, pummeling him square in the head.
Not again, was the last thing he thought of before he fell to the ground, blacking out.
"Aw man, you hit the nerd again?!"
"Hey, I didn't mean to— Ack!"
Sunoo stirred. It was weird. He could feel himself gain consciousness, but his head and body were pounding. Excruciatingly.
He could hear a little bit of arguing and a few masculine voices, all muffled yet somehow also painful to his ears.
"Quiet down," a new voice entered. It was a voice that Sunoo recognized, a voice that was much kinder and softer on his ears, almost healing. "If you keep yelling, you'll overwhelm him."
Whose voice was this? Sunoo knows that he knows this voice, but he couldn't quite put his finger on who.
Then, Sunoo felt a few gentle fingers run through his hair, and then a cold, ice compress pressed on his forehead.
"Just leave," the voice told the others. "Get to class. I'll take care of him."
There's some murmuring, and then some shuffling, and finally, the door slammed shut.
And the moment that it did, Sunoo's eyes shot open.
The first thing that he's met with as full consciousness pervades his body is a sharp pain everywhere, much more amplified and extreme this time.
The second thing that Sunoo sees is... you.
Of course, that makes sense now. You were the voice, and you were the person he was thinking about earlier. You were one of the exceptions to his "all rich kids are annoying" gag.
Of course you were.
Everyone knew you, and everyone loved you. Who wouldn't?
You were incredibly sweet, had a knack for calling everyone with affectionate nicknames, and every reason why Sunoo couldn't bring himself to hate everyone in the popular crowd. He's had a few classes with you in the past few years. You weren't the top student or academically driven by any means, but he could sense your effort.
Not to mention, you were really pretty. It was no secret that every single guy in school wanted a chance with you. Sunoo wasn't like that, but he wasn't going to sit there and deny that your face was nice to look at. Truthfully, it was difficult to not like you, one way or another.
In total, Sunoo's spoken to you a total of probably four times. Nevertheless, you were a lot more than just tolerable, compared to the rest of your peers.
Now Sunoo was in the infirmary, after that rugby ball smacked him right in the head and knocked him out. He was lying down on the gurney, a cold compress to his head. And you were taking care of him.
"You're up, sweetheart," you said softly, jumping to your feet once you realized that Sunoo was awake. You handed him his glasses that were folded neatly on the table, and then you went to the shelves. Sunoo attempted to raise himself up to sit, but almost immediately he was met with that horrible, aching pain again.
"Aghh!" he groaned, dropping himself instantly and clutching onto the ice pack on his head.
You hissed, scurrying over to his side.
"Don't move," you instructed him. Sunoo got a good look at your face now. Pretty, as always, but you had a pinched expression. You looked frustrated, and as you unfurled the bundle of bandages that you fetched from the shelf, your eyes traveled to him and almost looked apologetic. "Let's get you fixed up, sweetie."
Very gently, almost as if you were dealing with glass, you lifted Sunoo's head just enough so that you could wrap bandages around his forehead.
"Is that okay?" you asked him quietly, your nimble fingers brushing against his skin gently.
"Mmm—" Sunoo was cut off by a guttural sound in his throat— "Mhm."
You pushed his dark locks out of the way, humming.
While you worked on him, Sunoo couldn't help but notice how.... concerned you looked. As a matter of fact, where were the rest of your friends? Where was that bastard Sanghyeok that threw the damn rugby ball at him in the first place?
It wasn't like you were a student nurse or anything. Aside from just being a nice person, what reason did you have to go out of your way to fix Sunoo up? It wasn't like you were the one that threw the ball.
You pulled your bottom lip between your teeth, your brows furrowing together. Something was on your mind.
"I'm sorry," you finally blurted, your eyes wide and nearly glassy.
???
"Wha—"
"I'm sorry that Sanghyeok threw that ball at you," you continued, words spilling from your glossy lips like a waterfall, your eyes trained onto the floor and your head hung low. As words tumbled out, you stopped your ministrations on him, your hands taking solace on the hem of your uniform skirt. "I-It was very wrong of him, and it's even worse that you're now injured, and—"
"Why are you apologizing?" Sunoo interrupted you, though with labored breaths between his words, as he didn't want to hurt himself.
You frowned even harder, your fingers wringing each other. "B-But—"
Sunoo's face scrunched. "You didn't throw the ball at me. Sanghyeok did, so there's no reason for you to say sorry to me."
You shook your head.
"Still!" you huffed, your cheeks filling with air as you tapped your foot. You let out an exasperated breath. It smelled of coffee. "I know that it's not my fault, but— but that doesn't make what happened right."
Sunoo opened his mouth to speak, but you cut him off, beginning your ministrations once again. "I'm just doing what's right."
By the end of the school day, Sunoo got out of the nurse's office, just slightly stumbling. His head still hurt, but thanks to you, who missed a few classes, it hurt a lot less than it should have. Once again, you proved that you weren't as bad as the rest.
If it was any other day, Sunoo would go to the library to fit in a few hours of studying, but after today's events, he just wanted to go back to his dorm.
It's been a long, stressful, and painful day.
The moment that Sunoo's dorm door shut, he made a bee-line for his bed, completely ignoring his roommate Sunghoon. He threw off his uniform shirt and tie, peeling them off like they were some nuisance.
And just like that, the second that Sunoo's head hit the pillow, he knocked out.
Sunoo opened his eyes and he was in a bed. Not his own bed, but a softer, much more comfortable bed.
He felt a warm—really warm— almost fuzzy, feeling in his chest. Sunoo's hands feel around the bed. The sheets are smooth and clean, and under his fingertips they wrinkle ever-so slightly. Now that he was looking around, it seemed to be early morning, with rays of sunlight peeking through the windows. In fact, this dorm room wasn't his. It smelled of espresso coffee, and was so pristine and neat.
Sunoo didn't notice it now, but all the pain he was supposed to be feeling disappeared. And just as he was about to get up to his feet to inspect, someone appeared at the doorway.
You.
"You're up, sleepyhead?" you said, leaning on the doorway as a sly smile spread across your face.
Why was he in your room?
And more importantly, why were you in only a bathrobe?
Sunoo looked down, and that's when he realized that he, too, was shirtless.
Instead of responding how he'd want to— confused out of his mind— words tumbled out of his lips, almost like he had no control over them. "I was waiting for you."
You giggled, pretty sounds falling from your pretty lips. You slowly sauntered over to the foot of your bed, your gentle hands coming down to brush against Sunoo's leg.
"You look so handsome, sweetheart," you rasped. The warmth and fuzziness that he felt earlier began to spread from his chest to his entire body.
And the next thing that Sunoo knew, you were on top of him. Your lips pressed wet kisses all over his bare chest. Sticky gloss clung to his flushed skin, leaving pretty lipstick marks across his skin.
"God, I want you so bad," you groaned, before taking his skin between your teeth. You sucked on it gently, earning a gasp from the boy. You giggled into his ear.
By now, Sunoo was burning up completely. Each graze of your lips was like a scorching hot iron piercing his skin, but it burned so good. If it weren't for his fingers that dug into the crisp bed sheets, or the way that you gripped his chin, Sunoo would have fainted already. Each gasp for air as you marked his soft skin was ripped from his throat, hot lines of electricity running through his veins.
"Please..." Sunoo pleaded through a strangled whimper, letting out a soft moan when you bit onto his ear, your warm breath brushing up against his skin in a way that made him shudder. "Please, [Name]."
Everything before had a haze over it, a blurry screentone cast over Sunoo's eyes.
But as you looked up at him through your pretty eyelashes, lips swollen from abusing his skin, Sunoo swore that he could see everything so clearly. Every line on your face, every shadow and every highlight, every blemish and every perfection— he could see all of it.
"Please, what?" you murmured, your lips spreading into a grin. "What are you begging for, sweetheart?"
And it drove him crazy.
Sunoo threw his head back, an airy moan tumbling from his lips, giving you better access to his neck.
"I need you," he whined, his chest heaving up and down as he failed to catch his breath. "Please, I need you so bad."
You giggled again, pressing a hand against his chest.
"Anything you want you get—"
Beep beep! That was an eerily familiar alarm sound, one that was familiar enough to make Sunoo's head whip around.
You looked unfazed, only giggling again before leaning in to press soft kisses on his chest.
Beep beep!
There it was again! This time, Sunoo's body jerked at the sound, his face scrunching. Why weren't you reacting?
"Focus on me, sweetie," you whispered in his ear.
Sunoo complied (because of course he did), closing his eyes as you pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. And just as he was beginning to forget that godforsaken sound, sinking into the sweet taste of your lips...
Beep beep!
Sunoo couldn't help the way that he jerked away from you.
And as he did, Sunoo jerked awake.
His eyes shot open.
Dark room, completely drenched in sweat, burning up, and unfortunately alone.
"I swear, you always look like someone pissed you off."
"Right? He always looks so... constipated?"
On most days, Sunoo could endure his friends' teasing. Not this morning though.
He woke up from that dream completely disoriented. With his hair disheveled and face flushed, Sunoo arose from his slumber with beads of sweat running down his temple. It took him four more rings of his alarm clock and his roommate yelling at him to truly regain his consciousness— for while he was physically awake, he wasn't truly awake. Not after a dream like that.
Sunoo told everyone so far that he woke up with a fever, which was true. His cheeks were bright red, and his skin was hot to the touch, as he was bundled up in a few layers of coats.
Truthfully, his physical condition wasn't what was causing him to be so disoriented.
It was you.
What the fuck was that dream?
Usually, Sunoo couldn't remember his dreams, even if they were fever dreams. But now sitting in the dining hall, nibbling on his breakfast, Sunoo could remember every little thing so clearly in his mind.
He could remember how your room looked, how your bathrobe made your skin look so beautiful, how your plump lips felt against his chest, how fucking gorgeous you look—
Clank!
Sunoo dropped his fork onto the table, the metal cutlery clanking with the porcelain plates around him.
"What's up with him?" Jungwon not-so-quietly whispered to Riki. The two watched, perplexed, as Sunoo's cheeks turned even more red, the older boy's tired eyes squeezing shut as he hid his face in his palms.
Sunoo groaned, looking through his palms to look at his friends' confused expressions.
He felt hot. Maybe it was the fever.
He looked down at his palms, the reddy patches sticky with a thin sheen of sweat.
Definitely not just the fever.
He couldn't get your voice out of his head.
It was well-known that you liked to call everyone a nickname of sorts. It seemed like his nickname was "sweetheart."
Sunoo knew it was innocent, especially when you were fixing him up yesterday. But now with a new context—the context of his not-so innocent dream where you rasped "sweetheart" into his ear— he couldn't help but feel shy.
Sunoo's chest heaved. His tweed coat felt too thick now. His fingertips were held together by threads, and if he wasn't careful, he'd burst with blazing plasma.
Tuning out his friends, Sunoo couldn't stop his mind from drifting back to last night's dream.
He'd absolutely combust if he saw you again. Sunoo had no idea how he'd even look you in the eye, after doing unthinkable things with you in his dream.
God, there was no way that he'd ever let anyone, let alone you, find out about this. He felt like some pervert, some sick creep using you to fuel his nasty fantasies. He was not, but he sure felt like it.
Sunoo didn't dare look anywhere except down at his plate. If he did, he feared that he would catch sight of you, and completely die. As a matter of fact, even hearing the names of your friends in passing made his stomach do flips.
The school bell rang, and now Sunoo had to drag himself to class. Murmuring a small good-bye to his friends, his heavy footsteps took him where his first period morning class would be.
Gosh, he fell asleep almost immediately last night! Quick, was there homework that he was supposed to complete? His morning class started with his elective, botany.
Botany, botany, botany, he repeated in his head, jotting his memory. There weren't any notes due until the end of the week, and the closest test from today is two weeks. So why did he feel like he was missing something? Was there a presentation that he didn't remember? Maybe they were having a lab today and he forgot to bring his gloves. Or maybe—
Sunoo stopped in his tracks.
Just as he was cooling down, he felt his skin erupt with goosebumps, warmth overtaking his entire body.
If it weren't for his acute awareness of his surroundings, Sunoo would have tripped over his feet.
Because you decided to appear.
Oh fuck, why were you right there? Standing across the hall from him, all prettied up and completely oblivious to the hell that you were putting Sunoo through.
Had you always looked so pretty?
Of course, Sunoo recalled how perfect your face looked at all times, how jaw-dropping you managed to look even when you didn't try. The way that the light reflected off your skin made you look like you were glowing. Like a halo.
Sunoo's face burned. You definitely looked prettier in real life than in his dream. Not even the intricate workings of his brain could capture your beauty.
A strangled noise escaped Sunoo's throat, his face turning as white as a ghost, eyes big as saucers.
No, no, no! Sunoo squeezed his eyes shut. Of course. He had morning Botany with you! How could he forget!
"Move, you nerd!" someone grumbled as they shoved past him. Usually, on any other day, Sunoo would cuss back at them, maybe shove past them even harder. But all he could do now was stand back dazed.
He forced himself to pick up his feet again. After all, class was starting, and the bell would ring in a matter of minutes.
What was harder than pulling himself out of his daze was walking into that Botany lecture hall. Sunoo didn't dare look anywhere that wasn't his shoes, in fear that if he even caught a glimpse of you, he'd evaporate.
With quick, hasty steps, Sunoo scurried along the sides of the hall, ignoring the little hi's and good morning's from his classmates.
And just as he thought he successfully made it to his seat...
"Good morning, Kim!"
To say that Sunoo nearly jumped out of his skin would be an understatement.
As you appeared before his seat, seemingly out of thin air, Sunoo felt every inch of his body flare up with warmth.
You looked even better up-close.
"Oh— Uh—" Sunoo couldn't help the way he stared at you with wide eyes, his lips agape.
"Good— Um, Good morning, [N-Name]," was all he could manage out.
You stared at him for a few moments, blinking a few times, before a wide smile broke out on your lips.
You reached out, your hand resting gently on the crown of his head, completely oblivious to the way that the boy tensed under your touch. "How does your head feel, sweetheart?"
Sunoo completely forgot that he'd sustained a head injury earlier. How could he remember when something (or someone) else was making his head hurt?
"I-It's good!" he stammered quickly, words tripping over themselves. "I'm good!"
You cocked your head, your brows furrowing.
"No one picked on you, right?" you looked around, leaning closer to him— close enough that he could feel your breath on his neck. "Did any of my friends try bothering you again?"
Sunoo flushed at the proximity. This was feeling a little too familiar.
"No!" Sunoo nearly shouted. When everyone turned to look at him weirdly, the room falling silent for a mere second, he muttered a quick sorry. "I mean— No, n-no one bothered me again."
You nodded slowly, before you brought your hand to his forehead. "You're feeling a little warm, sweetie. You aren't sick, aren't you?"
If he had less self-awareness, Sunoo would have run around that lecture hall a few times, dunked his face in a bucket of iced water, and maybe even screamed a few times before answering your question. But he couldn't, so all he could do was shake his head no.
"Good," you said with a smile. "I'll see you around."
With that, you turned on your heel, and went back to your seat.
Class started, but Sunoo couldn't quite focus.
Sunoo felt like this had to be some joke. It felt like Jungwon or Riki were about to come out behind the curtains and scream "Gotcha!" in his face.
Because why on earth were you and him on the same path to the boys' dormitory?
After his daily study session in the library, Sunoo figured that the chances of him running into you again would be low.
But lo and behold, as Sunoo was on his way back to his dorm, you materialized from thin air and started walking with him. In silence, of course, but you greeted him with a smile.
Even after 10 hours of being out and about, you still managed to look so perfect.
In all the years that he'd attended this Academy, Sunoo's never seen you take this route, let alone go to the boys' dormitory.
Did you have a boyfriend? Or a special relationship with a boy? Sunoo's stomach dropped. What if he's been thinking about you all this time when you were taken already?
Sunoo opened his mouth to talk, but you beat him to it.
"Sooo, Sunoo," you said in a dreamy, sing-songy voice. "How's your day been?"
Torture, because of you. "I-It's been okay."
You hummed. "That's good to hear."
.
.
.
Silence.
It wasn't like he was in love with you. But for some reason, it bothered Sunoo that you could be heading to the boys' dorm for a possible boyfriend. He just needed to know.
"Where are you— Where are you headed?" Sunoo winced at his question. You probably thought he was weird now. He felt hot all over.
You smiled, clicking your tongue with a playful eye roll. "Just to my cousin's dorm. He just transferred here so my parents want me to help him move in."
Sunoo blinked.
Oh.
"Th-That's nice," Sunoo quipped. "I'm just going back to my— uh— dorm."
Of course he'd be going back to his own dorm! Sunoo chided in his head. You definitely thought he was an idiot by now.
The trip up the stairs and down the hall was quiet, awfully silent— only the distant sound of students and footsteps filling the air.
Eventually, the two of you met a stop.
"I should be turning at this corner now; his room is just down that hall," you said to him, earning a nod. "Thanks for walking with me, Sunoo."
"Of course," Sunoo said back shyly, a small smile on his lips. " 'It's my pleasure."
"No seriously," you continued, a bashful smile on your lips. "The halls during this time of year are a little sketchy. Sometimes, I can't even trust my own guy friends to walk me."
Sunoo cocked his head.
"The point is," you said, your eyes unwavering as they met with Sunoo's eyes, "You make me feel safe."
Before Sunoo could respond, you shot him a kind smile, before turning on your heel. "Good night, sweetheart!"
Sunoo was rendered speechless, staring at your retreating back.
"Good night," he muttered under his breath, not audible even to himself. "Sweetheart."
(He definitely thought about this interaction later into the night, and burned up severely.)
Although no one would guess it, the next few weeks were hell for Sunoo. It was almost terrifying.
How did you manage to show up everywhere?
Truly, it felt like everywhere Sunoo went, you just happened to show up.
It started with little things. In the middle of class you would come in to give back a sweater you borrowed from your friend. Sometimes you would come in and sit at the back of class to make up a test that you missed, or to ask the professor any question you had about the upcoming assignment. Each time, you'd wave at Sunoo, sometimes even before you waved at your friends.
All normal, of course. Every time he'd see you, he'd immediately straighten his back to make sure his posture was perfect— maybe even brush his hair out of his eyes and adjust his glasses, all in the hopes that if you looked at him, he wouldn't be a pain to view.
All as if he wasn't screaming on the inside. There was just something about how you always had that dreamy look in your eye, like a princess. How could he possibly look you in the eye?
Sunoo wanted to look perfect and pristine for you, but at the same time, he wanted to disappear under your gaze. Sometimes, he wanted to disappear because he simply couldn't handle the power that your eyes had. Other times he wanted to disappear so that he could look at you— observe every line, perfection, and imperfection of your face— without the existence of others around him.
No matter the time, one thing was common: Sunoo always turned four shades redder whenever you walked into the room. And it was frustrating.
"Why are you red?"
"You look embarrassed. Did you fart or something?"
"Tomato boy."
It was embarrassing, especially because his seatmates always ended up being the biggest assholes anyway.
Then, you began waving to him in the hallway. It started with small waves, sometimes with you mouthing hi or hello. But then you'd sometimes run up to him with a wide smile just to say hi.
Maybe you were just really nice, Sunoo thought, though he'd be lying if he said that he didn't wish you were giving him special treatment. In fact, it made him feel sick just thinking about how you called your friends cute pet names like darling, too. He almost had to excuse himself to the washroom when thinking about you calling other people sweetheart. You were bound to, of course, but that didn't mean that Sunoo particularly liked that idea.
All of these were small little things, pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things, especially considering that you were the most popular girl in school.
But then it started getting bad.
And it wasn't your fault.
Why— just why— did you have to be in every single one of his dreams?
The first dream he had about you was already enough. Why did he need a bajillion more?
The dreams ranged from extremely mundane to scary to a bit... raunchy. And yet, you still managed to be in every single one of them.
In the mundane ones, you'd be the person that mutters a remark to him before disappearing.
In the scary ones, you'd be the person that Sun threw over his shoulder as he ran away from the undead.
In the raunchy ones, you'd be under him, your arms thrown around his neck as he lays wet kisses on your skin, basking in the pretty sounds that you make— Too much!
He couldn't help it. He really couldn't.
There were times where Sunoo was afraid to go to sleep. Not because seeing you was a bad thing, but because the aftermath was always bad.
Sunoo always woke up sweaty and burning up. He'd trudge to the shared bathroom and splash water on his face. No matter how cold the water was, whenever he closed his eyes all he could see was your face. Your pretty, pretty, face. You seemed to get prettier with every dream, yet dream-you couldn't ever compare to real life-you.
Seeing your face wasn't the problem. He loved to see it. The problem was that every time he saw your face Sunoo would get all clammy and mushy and warm on the inside. His cheeks would burn, and he'd feel warm all over.
And the hardest part was that every single time, all he could hear was your voice calling him "sweetheart" — over and over, in a hypnotizing cadence that only made him want to fall into your essence even more.
It was weird.
So, so, weird.
And Sunoo thought that he was going to die.
It seemed like Sunoo was always in for a surprise.
By the end of the month, Sunoo managed to convince himself to forget about his dreams completely.
After all, after a few days of doing his best to avoid you, he was able to assure himself that all of these feelings would disappear with time, since his attraction to you was random anyway.
Sure, you're pretty, Sunoo told himself. And very kind and sweet, but it wasn't like you and him were best buds. So whatever delusion that was going on in his head was bound to go nowhere. He was just being a teenager, probably.
He'd never felt this way towards anyone before. It was best to just ignore it.
Sunoo clenched his fists. Yeah, he'd do his damn best to ignore it.
But as he was in line in the Academy's library, preparing to check out a new book about whatever topic he wanted to read up on, Sunoo felt a pair of hands clutch his shoulders.
"Hi, Sunoo!"
Sunoo whipped his head around and jolted, a small "Ah!" leaving his lips. Startled, he nearly dropped his massive hunk of a book, earning a glare from the snobby student-librarians.
It was you.
The moment that he laid eyes on you and your silly little grin, Sunoo's resolve weakened. Like walls of a fortified castle crumbling under the force of a cannon, if Sunoo didn't look away now he'd be absolutely beat.
"H— Hey there, [Name]," he said quietly, tearing his eyes away from you and turning back to the front, holding his book close to his chest.
"Whatcha got there?" you asked him curiously. He could still feel your hands on his shoulders squeezing him playfully.
Sunoo looked down at his book.
Thematic Cartography and Geovisualization?
Oh god, you were definitely going to think he was a nerd.
"Nothing..." he murmured, clutching the book even closer to him.
You shook him by his shoulders playfully, a little chuckle coming from your lips. "Oh, c'mon! I know that massive book isn't just 'nothing.' What're you reading?"
"It's..." Sunoo winced. "It's embarrassing."
You pouted, a little hmph! coming from you.
"Next!" the librarian called, and Sunoo moved forward in the line to check out his book, though he was distracted by the way that you still continued to cling to him.
"You didn't— You didn't get a book?" Sunoo asked as you followed him to a library table, your hands empty.
"Nope," you said smoothly. "I'm just here to study!"
"Oh." Sunoo blinked, pushing up his glasses. It was quiet and he didn't know what to say. "What are you studying?"
"I'll tell you," you smiled, "Only if you tell me what your book is about."
He sighed. Sunoo sat down, and naturally, you followed suit, sitting across from him. He plopped his massive book down onto the table, and slowly slid it over to you.
Your brows furrowed together as you read its title.
Sunoo's cheeks burned. You definitely think he's some nerd. How embarrassing.
You finally looked up at him. Only, instead of looking at him with condescension or ridicule, you looked embarrassed.
"Um," your brows knitted together further. "What's cartography?"
Sunoo stared at you. You don't think he's weird?"
"I-I'm sorry," you continued, letting out a deep breath. You looked perplexed. "I'm not very smart. I don't know what cartography is. Or what geo-something-something is. Can you explain it to me?"
He stared at you again.
After what you just said, there was no way that he'd possibly let his feelings for you fade away. There were a lot of things that Sunoo couldn't agree with when it came to the popular kids at his school. But here he understood why hoards of boys would be at your feet, begging for just one chance.
The corners of his lips lifted. The bashful look on your face was... cute.
"It's okay," he began. "Cartography is just the science of making maps."
You looked even more confused, but also relieved. Relieved that he wasn't going to make fun of you for not knowing. "There's a science behind making maps?"
"Hm," Sunoo paused to think, "Not exactly. But there's a lot of thought that goes behind making maps."
"Why?"
Sunoo thought he was going to fall in love. He loved his friends, of course, but none of them were ever as curious about his interests as you were.
"Well," Sunoo's hands joined to make a circular shape. "The Earth is a three-dimensional globe." You nodded to show that you were listening, staring at him with curious eyes. "Imagine even trying to transfer a 3D globe onto a flat, two-dimensional surface. It's pretty difficult to do without intense distortion."
You nodded slowly, your eyes narrowing.
"Was I rambling?" Sunoo asked quietly, so quietly that he didn't even think you could hear him.
"No!" you jumped to answer, earning a glare from the librarian. "I'm just trying to process it."
After a few moments of silence, you sucked in a deep breath. "I get it now, sweetie. You're so smart."
"Th-Thank you..." Sunoo stuttered out. Did he really just ramble to you about maps? And did you actually just listen to him with interest? "What are you studying?"
"Oh, me?" you looked down, embarrassed again. "It's just history. I can't wrap my head around it and I have an exam next Wednesday."
"Oh...." Sunoo blinked. "I can help you."
And that's how he got invited to your dorm.
(And to hell with forgetting his feelings!)
Truth be told, you weren't the person that everyone thought you were.
It seemed like, to the rest of the school, you were just a perfect little angel. And the fact that you rejected every guy that made advances toward you only helped that image grow.
Everyone thought you were perfect, beautiful, and most of all, untouchable.
And that couldn't be any further than the truth.
The truth was simply that no one was good enough for you.
Everyone had an essence of snobbery to them, something that you just couldn't get past. You wanted someone raw and genuine, someone that had more substance to them than just their daddy's money.
Which was why you wanted Sunoo Kim.
And you wanted him bad.
There was something so fucking attractive amount the way he'd push up his glasses, eyes squinting to get a better look of the board as he messily jotted down notes.
There was something so charming about the way he clenched his jaw when he was concentrated, his brows furrowing.
There was something that made your stomach flip whenever he rolled up his sleeves to do some math problem that you probably couldn't understand.
There was something that made you so obsessed whenever he swiped his tongue over his plush lips, his eyes brightening as he explained his favorite topic.
God, you didn't just want him. You needed him.
All these years, you did everything with him at the back of your mind. Would Sunoo Kim look up from his massive textbook if you wore this skirt? Maybe he'd even breathe in your direction if you got a better grade on this exam.
You didn't get it. Everyone looked at you, yet the only person that you wanted to look at you did not.
You wanted Sunoo Kim, and you wanted him bad.
You and Sunoo agreed to meet on Monday and Tuesday to help you study for your history exam on Wednesday.
On Monday, the two of you met in the library right after school. It was a quiet, focused session, covering all the necessary sections in a short amount of time. For the first time ever, you actually understood the concepts!
On Tuesday, the two of you agreed to meet in your dorm at 7PM, because that was when you knew your roommates would be gone.
You glanced at the analogue clock pinned high on the wall near the entrance of your dormitory. Every dorm room had one, as mandated by the school to promote punctuality— all the exact same model with a red-brown base, serif lettering, and a gold trim. Yet, the clock in your dorm felt slower, much slower than it should.
6:47PM, it read, the slow ticks pushing off the walls as if to tease you.
Couldn't 7PM come any faster?
Your eyes fell over to your roommate's mirror in the corner of her desk.
The Academy's uniform was strict. Collared button-up, the school blazer with its crest crisply embroidered on, for girls the skirt at a reasonable length: it was all very stringent. All students were required to wear the uniform during school hours.
This study session with Sunoo would not be during school hours. You picked out your best top— a pretty, white top with a delicate lace trim. You always got the most stares when you wore this one (and hopefully, Sunoo would stare at you).
You never thought that you had to put any more effort into your appearance than you usually did, but as the clock ticked on the wall, you couldn't help but feel self-conscious.
You knew you were pretty, but what if Sunoo didn't think the same? Did you look weird today? You swore your face was feeling puffy earlier— should you do something? What if you suddenly woke up today and you morphed into a frog-like creature, and everybody knew except you?
You picked at your fingernails as you waited (im)patiently for 7PM to come. Your palms felt a little clammy, and your heart pounded in your chest with each passing minute.
And finally, just when all of your self-confidence was beginning to slip from your grasp, you heard a knock at your door.
If it was anybody else, you would've taken your time to get to the door, maybe even shout a little "Just a minute!"
But because it was the Sunoo Kim, you couldn't help but eagerly scurry to the door. You would've been embarrassed because Sunoo could 100% hear your loud footsteps as you rushed to the door, but you were too engulfed by your nerves to even think of it.
"Hi, sweetheart!" you blurted the second you opened your door, a bright smile on your face. There Sunoo stood, with his delicate face and thin gold-rim glasses, looking composed and focused as ever. And god did that make you want him.
"Oh, hi," Sunoo said coolly, pushing up the glasses on his nose. Though, you missed the way his eyes twitched, his tongue swiping over his bottom lip as he sucked in a sharp breath.
The two of you stood at the door for a few moments, just staring at each other. Your smile never faltered. If anyone were to see you, they'd see hearts in your eyes and a sparkly, pink lovey-dovey aura radiating off of you.
"Come in!" you said cheerfully, letting the boy into your dorm.
The two of you got to work pretty quickly. If there was one thing about Sunoo that you could appreciate, it was his sheer willpower and concentration when it came to academics.
It wasn't like you didn't try in school. That couldn't be further from the truth; you always tried your best, even when your best didn't earn you the best marks.
Sunoo was just another level. You couldn't understand how he did it. He was so focused and intelligent, it made your chest feel warm and fuzzy.
The moment that he stepped inside, he had your textbook and notes cracked open immediately, asking you questions that were just a little too difficult for your mind to wrap around.
"What?!" you cried, your face scrunching as jumbled words that you couldn't understand fell from his lips. You looked at Sunoo incredulously. "We did not study that!"
You could have sworn Sunoo chuckled at your confusion, his eyes squeezing into thin crescents as the corner of his lips lifted. Usually, you'd feel embarrassed for not quite being the brightest, but Sunoo never made you feel that way.
"Lee is your professor," Sunoo pushed up his glasses, unable to hold back airy chuckles at your outrage. You nodded. "Well, he's notorious for his ridiculous trick questions, right? As your study-buddy, it's my duty to prepare you as best as I can."
That's when you got up from your desk chair and flopped over onto your bed, groaning into your pillows.
"Why do you have to be so thoroughhhh?" you whined, kicking your feet.
Your heart fluttered when Sunoo laughed.
Yes, laughed.
It was high-pitched and breathy, like he was sucking in breaths of air only to push it out with a pretty giggle.
You whipped your head around, picking it up from the pillow. You stared at the boy with wide eyes.
God, how could anyone be so beautiful?
You watched the boy laugh, completely and utterly infatuated with him. He was so cute. You needed him now.
You threw your head back into the pillow, continuing to groan and whine, in the hopes that it would make him laugh.
"You hate meeeeeee," you whined, "You hate meeeee!"
"I don't!" Sunoo laughed, his hands slapping his knees, "I don't hate you."
You whined again, kicking your feet. "You doooo."
A comfortable silence fell over the two of you, filled with quiet giggles. From your desk, Sunoo nudged you with his foot, earning another cute whine from you.
You were cute. And hardworking and enthusiastic. But that wasn't a surprise to Sunoo.
Sunoo watched as you shouted at your roommate who came back to the dorm to fetch something she left behind.
"Hurry up, Yujin!" you chided quietly, trying to get Yujin out of the dorm as quickly as possible... before your momentum with Sunoo was lost. "Move it, move it!"
"Geez, sorry!" Yujin rummaged through her things, trying to look for whatever she forgot.
When Yujin finally left, you never closed the door any fast, eagerly turning back to Sunoo and plopping down on your bed.
"Sorry, sweetie" you murmured, a frown on your face. "My friends are having a party tonight and Yujin forgot her lipstick, or something. Her stupid crush is there so she needs to look 'perfect' or whatever."
"Party?" Sunoo cocked a brow.
"Yeah," you rolled your eyes. "It's for someone's birthday."
Sunoo narrowed his eyes.
Did you skip your friends' birthday party just to study for your history exam?
.
.
.
Pause.
Did you just ditch your friends just to study with him?
A strange noise came out of Sunoo's lips as his cheeks felt warm.
Relax, he thought. It wasn't like it was a date or anything. Surely, you were just trying to get a good grade. That's why you chose to study instead of party.
"I was gonna go," you said smoothly, looking at your nails, "But how could I miss out on time with you?"
Sunoo's ears burned.
"Oh— Well—" Just as words were becoming coherent in his head, you just had to drop that on him. He spluttered. "Thank you...? I-I— I mean—"
You chuckled. You got off the bed and joined Sunoo again at your desk. "Let's study, sweetheart."
For the next hour or so, the two of you were in a deep study session. Every word that you read and every word that fell from Sunoo's mouth, you soaked up like a sponge. You needed to pass this exam, and even more, you needed to make Sunoo's efforts worth it. He already spent yesterday and today helping you; you did not want to waste his time and fail.
Your dorm room was quiet now. Other than the sound of pages turning, pencils on parchment, and the distant sound of partying down the halls, the room was silent. From time to time, someone would run down the halls, probably running after their friend. You and Sunoo would look up at each other and share a chuckle.
You had just finished a practice test a few minutes ago, and now Sunoo was grading it for you. Meanwhile, you read up on your notes once again. Holding the notebook up, you hid behind it, creating a wall between you and Sunoo.
You feared that if you could see Sunoo, you wouldn't be able to concentrate.
Well, just him being in the same room as you was already enough to make your mind drift. How could you not?
His concentrated expression made you feel weak to your knees, his fox-like eyes drilling into your practice test. His skin looked so perfect and airbrushed, you just wanted to pounce on him and mark it up and—
Okay, too far.
But still.
You've been studying for a good hour now. It wouldn't hurt to take a break, right?
You peeked over the side of your notebook to catch a glimpse of Sunoo. He was minding his own business and doing it quietly, but he looked so good that you couldn't tear your eyes away.
Yep, this was the break that your eyes needed, from those hunking paragraphs of text and difficult-to-read stimuli.
"Do you need something?" Sunoo asked, not moving his eyes from the practice test that he was currently grading.
You felt your cheeks heat up. How did he notice your staring so quickly? This must mean that he could always notice you staring at him! Fuck, fuck, fuck, were you weird? He definitely thought you were weird now, and—
"N-Nothing," you stammered out, immediately burying yourself back into your notebook. In fact, you even went as far as turning your entire back from him out of embarrassment.
.
.
.
So embarrassing!
"I don't mind..." Sunoo murmured.
You snapped your head over to him. "W-What?"
Did you hear him correctly?
"I said..." This time, it was Sunoo's turn to hide his head behind the paper, making it impossible for you to see face. "I said I don't mind if you stare at me."
You felt light-headed.
Everything— from the deep espresso scent in the air to Sunoo's soft cologne to the way his moles littered his skin to the way he was sat so attractively at your desk, spouting intelligent nonsense at you to the very way that his glasses sat on his nose— everything about Sunoo was driving you mad.
Insane.
You didn't feel like yourself. You didn't feel like the perfect angel that everyone wanted you to be.
You felt like a selfish animal about to pounce on another. You felt like you were going to sink your teeth into his neck and ravage him.
Your head was spinning. Everything was spinning. Your skin felt hot, your mouth dry, as if it needed something to satiate it now. You were thirsty, thirsty for Sunoo, and nothing would be able to satisfy you but him.
And before you could even control yourself, you threw aside your notebook, grabbed Sunoo's face, and smashed your lips against his.
In that moment, it felt like all time stopped.
You couldn't feel anything, other than your hands that delicately clutched Sunoo's face, and your lips that were pressed against his. Your heart pounded in your ears. You felt like you were tied to a pyre, burnt like a sinner at the stake, yet it felt good.
But the moment that you heard Sunoo's breath hitch in his throat, a guttural sound tumbling out, you regained your senses.
Immediately, you pulled away, stumbling back as you caught your breath.
Sunoo's face was bright red as he stared at you. He took heavy breaths, almost like he wasn't breathing before.
"I-I'm—" you blurted, your mind not quite thinking straight. When your eyes met with Sunoo's you nearly bursted. "I-I'm so sorry— I don't know what came over me."
Sunoo only stared at you.
You swallowed the lump in your throat. What on earth did you just do? Suddenly, you were hit with regret and embarrassment.
You spluttered, apologies and jumbled words spilling out of your lips. Yet, Sunoo wasn't listening.
Your words fell upon deaf ears.
Sunoo was too busy staring at your lips.
And if you weren't too busy apologizing, you would notice the way Sunoo's teeth dug into his bottom lip, his fists clenching as his nails prodded into his palms. You would notice the way Sunoo stared at you with glazed over eyes, how his pupils were blown out.
You would notice Sunoo's own self-control slipping out of his grasp.
After all the torment that he's been through— all your light touches, appearances in his dreams, and goddamn pretty smiles— Sunoo could feel his resolve being torn from his hands. He did his best; he dug his claws into what determination and control he had, but alas, it wasn't enough.
And as fast as you could blink, Sunoo grabbed your wrist and pulled you in against his chest.
Holding you by the waist, Sunoo gripped your chin.
"Can I kiss you?" His voice was desperate. "Please, can I kiss you?"
"Yes," you whispered, your hands sliding up his chest to hold his broad shoulders. "Yes, please kiss me."
As the last syllable left your lips, Sunoo wasted no time crashing his lips against yours.
Unlike his usual quiet and calm self, his lips were the complete opposite. They were rough and hungry, eating you like a starved man. You whined against his lips, gripping Sunoo's hair with weak fingers.
It was a messy kiss. An inexperienced, messy kiss that any of your friends would jeer about. No rhythm, no ebb or flow, just feeling.
But to you, this was what you needed.
You could taste the desperation on Sunoo's tongue; the taste of someone pushed to the edge and now finally tipping over. It sent electric waves of warmth down your skin, your stomach doing flips as his hands roamed.
Then, Sunoo gently pushed you onto the bed, his lips swollen as he peered down at you.
"Are you okay?" he asked quickly, making sure that he didn't push too hard.
You only smiled. "Mhm."
Sunoo got on top of you, being careful to not crush you under him.
It looked just like his dream.
The smell of espresso coffee in the air, the two of you in bed, and did you think he wouldn't notice the white lace top that you chose to wear? Just for him.
Sunoo leaned on his elbows for support as he was on top of you, leaning in to kiss you.
Except, before his lips could meet yours, you giggled, placing your hands on his shoulders to stop him.
Sunoo looked at you concerned, like a deer in headlights. Had he done something wrong?
But you only smiled.
Gently, you put your hands on his glasses, straightening them out. They had gotten crooked earlier when the two of you first kissed.
"Can I take these off, sweetie?" you asked.
Shivers ran down his spine at the nickname. Sunoo hummed, too eager to kiss you to even care if he'd be half-blind without them. You took his glasses off, putting it on your bedside table.
Sunoo took your face in his hands, his fox-like eyes staring into your eyes.
"You look so beautiful," he breathed. Sunoo's head dived for your neck. His breath tickled your skin, making you let out a whimper. "So, so, so beautiful."
With that, Sunoo began pressing open-mouthed kisses on your neck. With each kiss you let out a moan, your arms tightly wrapped around his neck and pulling at his hair. Your legs wrapped around him, your head falling back into the pillows to give Sunoo better access.
"Su— Sunoo— ahh," you struggled out, especially when Sunoo sucked on your skin. Although he was only kissing your neck, your entire body felt like jelly, including your brain. "Sunoo— I-I'm sensi— sensitive there."
"Sensitive where?" Sunoo asked simply, ignoring the way that you squirmed under him.
When you could only moan in response, you could feel Sunoo grin against you.
His lips nipped at your collarbone. "Sensitive here?"
"A-Ah—" you moaned, your arm jerking out to grip the bed sheets below you.
Sunoo kissed a wet line to your jugular, right at the center of your neck. "What about here?"
When all you could do was whimper, he grinned again. His lips traveled to the very side of your neck, just under your ear.
"What about here?" he asked again.
But instead of a moan or whimper, you laughed. You threw your head back again, pulling Sunoo's head into your chest in an embrace as soft giggles left your lips.
"I'm ticklish there," you giggled out. You bring a hand up to brush up against that spot on your neck. You grinned softly. "Sorry, I'm ticklish there I guess."
Sunoo nodded into your shoulder. He took in your scent, the feeling of you pressed up against him. He didn't mind that your little session was interrupted by something light-hearted. After all, he got to learn something about you, no matter how small.
And just as Sunoo was listening to your heartbeat, you pulled him back.
"Turn over," you instructed. He did just that. You were now on top of him. "My turn."
Just like in his dream.
He was in for a long night.
"Sunoo!" you shouted, your legs moving faster than you could think. The moment that you spotted his familiar back, you pounced on him, throwing your arms around him. "Sunoo, guess what?!"
Sunoo looked over his shoulder, swallowing back any embarrassment and shyness as you hugged him. Everyone in the hallway was staring at you by now, but it seemed like you didn't care. And if you didn't care, then he didn't care either. "What?"
You turned the boy over. It was now that he noticed the papers in your hands. You shoved it in his face, big red numbers at the forefront.
"One hundred percent!" you exclaimed. It was your history exam. "I got one hundred percent!"
The two of you celebrated (i.e. you hugged Sunoo) in the hallway, completely ignoring anyone that was staring. After all, it was Wednesday afternoon and the dining period was ending soon.
"Good job," Sunoo smiled. He was happy. "You did great."
"I couldn't have done it without you!" Your smile was so bright that it could light up the entire academy. You threw your arms around him again, this time pushing your face into his neck. You squeezed him. "Oh, thank you, thank you!"
You pulled back, looking at him with big, glimmering eyes. You took his hands in yours, squeezing them excitedly.
Feeling bold, Sunoo pushed up his glasses before leaning down to whisper in your ear. "Your neck," he rasped, "I can see the hickeys."
Your eyes widened into saucers at that, immediately fixing your shirt's collar. Your face was painted with shyness, squeezing your eyes shut. Your panic was so evident that anyone could probably tell. So cute.
"Just kidding," Sunoo chuckled, before he turned on his heel and began walking away from you, ignoring your cute shouting as you followed after him.
Yeah, he'd regret that later. After all, you had him on a leash, and there was no way in hell that he could escape you.
He wasn't going to sleep tonight, one way or another. Not if it's you.

red light, green light // park sunghoon
After summer break and your break-up, it seems that things finally go back to normal. At least, until the first after-match party when in an attempt to save you from your ex, Sunghoon blurts out that you're his girlfriend now, and so, your fake dating starts.
➳ Characters: college rugby player!Sunghoon x cheerleader!female reader/you
➳ Genre: fake dating au, college au, sports au, angst, fluff
➳ Words: 6.2k
➳ Warning: reader is very insecure in the beginning and healing from a toxic relationship; the toxic, manipulative ex is also in the story (named Jaehyeok but he has no connection to any real-life people or characters), mentions of cheating on ex's part, injuries
➳ A/N: This story had the most votes in my recent poll, so here it is. It's also a spin-off to my most popular story 'how to cross the line?' with Jake that takes place before this one, but this story can absolutely be read on its own. ❤️
After the summer break, you thought that everything bad - including your break-up with Jaehyeok - would be forgotten. As a cheerleader and a college rugby player who had gotten together over the spring term, and had broken up close to finals, you had been the talk of town until everyone had gone home for the break. There had been a pleasantly short amount of time between the break-up and summer break with no football matches afterwards, so no way to see him up-front when he had been the last person you had wanted to see.
With the autumn term coming, it seemed to be true, and you couldn’t have been happier. The summer months weren’t enough to pick yourself up after the break-up, but they were enough to try to pick yourself up. He had humiliated you in front of his team members, and even though they didn’t look at you any differently, you could feel the lingering gazes on you two when Jaehyeok decided to sit beside you at the first after-match party of the season.
“Oooh, are you guys getting back together?” One of the boys cooed, laughing into his hands as if he had discovered the rumour of the century.
“We’re just being friendly to each other, you know,” Jaehyeok replied with a mellifluous smile, one that you had naively fallen for last semester. Now, you could see how well-practised this was, just like so many of his lines and his whole good boy behaviour. He was perfect only on the surface, he was rotten on the inside.
You could feel the overly curious eyes on you, hungry for an answer, for some drama like hawks circling around their prey. Too bad how fitting it was for those around you to be playing for the Hybe Hawks, they were predators when it came to your love life, and it had been the same when you had been together.
You forced a smile onto your face, nodding without saying a word and looking for a way out when Jay inquired if anyone wanted more meat, and you had never been more relieved in your life. If there were guys in the rugby team who were far from the rest, it would be Jake, Jay and Sunghoon. Those three were the ones who didn’t want to mingle with the others’ drama, and for that reason, you hadn’t really interacted with them before this semester because if you had hung out with other players from the team before, they had always been Jaehyeok’s friends. Now, however, they were the only ones who didn’t want to pick you apart since the break-up.
You tried to keep it in, you tried to conceal your feelings, while the conversation moved on, but when Jaehyeok put a piece of meat onto your plate without you asking him to, the weight on your shoulders doubled. It felt like you were trying to hold up too much, and all that weight could collapse onto you any minute, so to avoid that, you haphazardly excused yourself, saying that you didn’t feel well after drinking.
You threw your bag over your shoulder and exited the BBQ restaurant, the gazes of the athletes and cheerleaders searing into your back. You held onto the strip of your bag even tighter, trying to ground yourself to something real, something that you could control. You were so naive, really. How could you even assume that they could move on from your break-up and not bring it up anymore? How could you even assume that Jaehyeok would change, and bear the consequences of his actions when he had been the one saying those nasty things about you? You had been so stupid, so naive, so…
“Y/N!”
Jaehyeok’s all too familiar voice calling your name made your knees weak for a moment before you snapped yourself back to reality, reminding yourself that it was who he was, it was how he lured people in. You couldn’t believe in his sweet words anymore.
So you picked up your pace and walked even faster, but the red lights at the pedestrian crossing forced you to stop, to look at him when he halted beside you, and to listen to his mellifluous words.
“Hey! What was that about before? I just want us to be cool with each other after you called it quits.”
That was the problem with Jaehyeok. When you looked at these - this scene, his words, the cool expression on his face - from an outsider’s point of view, everything seemed ideal, almost perfect. Yet, when you were the one inside of it, you knew how that illusion of perfection casted its shadow onto you; how you felt suffocated under it, desperately trying to hold onto it because just as he had said it about you to his friends, you had been nothing without him. If you had not gotten together with him during the first semester, no one would have taken note of your existence. Even if you had been in the cheerleading team, the girls had started talking to you only after Jaehyeok had done the same.
And this… this is what Jaehyeok had done disgustingly well: to raise you up, to make you feel special, so you wouldn’t leave his side. Too bad you had caught him telling the other guys the same once and catching him kissing some girl at an after-match party another time. You hadn’t supposed to be there at the party, that’s true, since the group work meeting you would have gone to had been cancelled last minute, but to see him shove his tongue down another girl’s throat while murmuring to her that he would break up with you soon, so she shouldn’t worry had made you frozen on the spot. You wouldn’t have it in you to confront him on the spot, so you had left the party almost as soon as you had gotten there, tears pricking your ears, and the only person who had asked you if you had been alright was Sunghoon when you had managed to bump into him while exiting the scene.
The flashbacks poured onto you one after another, and you could feel your hands shaking by your sides while you were momentarily reliving them.
“You would have broken up with me anyway, we both know that,” you pointed out rather indignantly, desperately glancing side-ways to see how much more time you needed to wait for the lights to turn green.
35 more seconds…
“Well, yeah, but that doesn’t mean you should act all weird when we’re beside each other. Just because you’ve prioritised school over dates with me doesn’t make me a bad guy,” he justified all too innocently, and there it was again: turning the tables around, making you feel small, blaming you for what happened. Blaming you for not having enough time for him, so he had to kiss other girls.
20 more seconds…
“It’s not like I don’t see you talking more with Jay, Jake and Sunghoon since we broke up,” Jaehyeok spitted as if he couldn’t just let it be, and you balled your hands into fists, your nails digging into your skin.
15 more seconds….
Yeah, the only ones who were willing to speak to you after the break-up, god forbid you didn’t tell them off, you thought to yourself.
“I’ve been talking to them since we broke up, not before. There’s a difference between what you did and how I've been talking to guys ever since.”
“And besides, she’s her own person, she can do what she wants,” a voice from behind meddled with the tension hanging over you and Jaehyeok, and as he stepped beside you, so he would come between you and your ex, it felt a bit like he was shielding you. Both figuratively and literally.
You would have recognised that slender build of his, the fringe in his eyes and the depth of his voice anywhere, and even though it was Park Sunghoon out of all people, you didn’t mind that he was the one who showed up. You had no idea whether it had anything to do with the fact that he had seen you exit that ominous after-match party with teary eyes, but even if it was pity, you could take it given the circumstances.
“What do you know, man?”
“I know everything,” Sunghoon stated sternly, keeping eye-contact with Jaehyeok who furrowed his eyebrows in question. Even though you clearly doubted that he knew everything, he announced it so confidently that you would have believed him all the same, and you could feel the same coming from Jaehyeok, too. “I would appreciate it if you didn’t bother her anymore. She’s my girlfriend now.”
The way Sunghoon declared it so matter-of-factly rendered you speechless, and you just stood there, frozen, and even though people started crossing the street, you totally forgot about the lights turning green. It felt as if the whole world stopped all at once, and yet, a sort of warmth peeked through the rain clouds, as if a ray of hope found its way through all the dirt.
Given that you didn’t argue with Sunghoon’s statement because you were too shocked yet numb to do so, Jaehyeok believed it. Though he clearly looked like he didn’t want to believe it.
“Sure. Congrats on getting her. It’s not like I would ever want her back,” Jaehyeok exclaimed a little too frustrated as his last words before turning around and heading back to the restaurant.
You watched him go with a mix of rage and relief, then, your eyes searched Sunghoon’s who was already looking at you. He was nibbling on his lower lip, awfully nervous for someone who had just bluffed about being your boyfriend, and the calm facade of his broke when he spoke up:
“I’m so sorry about this. I didn’t know what else to say to make him go away,” he mumbled, coy and guilty, but you could only care about the kindness lacing his words, and the genuine care in his eyes. You didn’t know him well enough to draw conclusions, but based on your previous encounters with him, you would say that it took him some courage to walk up to you two like that and to save you from the situation with a lie.
So you felt even more grateful for his interruption, and you didn't even want him to think otherwise.
“No, really, it’s… it’s fine. Thanks for that,” you blurted out, equally as uncertain what to say. Sunghoon’s eyes slipped from your face to your hands, and that’s when you realised that your hands were still shaking.
“Did he…” He breathed out, shaky and worried, before pointing at your hands. “Did he do anything to you?”
You could feel how difficult it was for him to say the words, and the weight his question carried was heavy, his question loaded. It made his earlier act less surprising for he could even assume that Jaehyeok would dare to do something like that.
“No, he didn’t do anything like that. It was just… his words as always…”
“Those matter, too,” Sunghoon whispered, somewhat to himself, before looking around. You didn’t know what he was thinking or what he was trying to do, but the lights were red for the third time you were here, so you couldn’t go on your way either way.
When Sunghoon turned back to you, he examined your expression before averting his eyes to your hands again. He could see that your hands were less shaky but you still fumbled with them to ease your nerves, and maybe that’s what prompted him to announce:
“I will go back to the dorms with you. I don’t want you to be alone after this.”
You were so shocked by his gentleness that you couldn’t form proper words, so you just nodded and crossed the street beside him when the lights turned green.
It’s safe to say that you didn’t think about the consequences of your actions - or should you say Sunghoon’s actions? - because by the next day, everyone had gotten to know that you were Sunghoon’s girlfriend (which, in fact, you weren’t) thanks to Jaehyeok gossiping. The cheerleading group chat exploded with questions and next day’s rugby practice was all about the so-called news, so you had to have an emergency meeting with Sunghoon at the end of the day.
You were in the corridor leading to the business department’s simulation labs, and since those were for societies and extra-curricular workshops, you knew that it would be rare to bump into anyone around here. So it was just the two of you, sitting on a hallway bench, the air somewhat more troubled than the day before.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t think it would come to this,” Sunghoon broke the silence almost immediately, his voice deep and worn. He couldn’t look you in the eye, instead, he was playing with his fingers and staring far ahead.
“It’s okay, really,” you tried to reassure him as best as you could. “I’ve been through this before. It gets better after a week,” you shrugged nonchalantly, forcing yourself to avoid having flashbacks of the time you and Jaehyeok had gotten together.
Sunghoon let out a shaky breath hearing that, and you could feel that he was about to say something, but when he turned towards you with his body, he didn’t say anything. Expectant, you looked at him, locking eyes with him, and for a moment, you had a feeling that you might burst into tears. He looked at you so worried, so gentle, as if he was ready to start a revolution for you, it opened a hidden locker in your heart that had never experienced such kindness coming from a boy.
“Are you really okay?” He inquired quietly, barely audible, and it didn’t slip your attention that he glanced down at your hands resting in your lap before looking into your eyes again.
“I’m as fine as I can be. If I’m not fine, it’s not because of this situation, but because of Jaehyeok, so really, don’t beat yourself up about it.”
“Do you want to keep this up? Our… fake relationship?” He hesitated a bit before continuing, and you found it adorable how his ears turned red when he babbled the word ‘relationship’ out loud.
“If you don’t mind,” you answered, giving him the chance to back out because you didn’t want him to tie himself to you over an attempt to save you from your douchebag ex.
Sunghoon’s eyes widened, almost comically, as if it hurt him to hear such a suggestion. Then, he held up his hands in front of his chest, waving them in heavy opposition.
“No, no, I don’t.”
“Okay, I just wanted to make sure,” you let out a little chuckle seeing his objection, and the boy still blinked at you, albeit a bit shyly now.
So you went on to discuss that you would keep up this fake relationship, but nothing was forced. If either of you wanted to put an end to it, the other one would agree immediately. There were no forced dates or social media posts or appearances, just whatever you were comfortable with. You exchanged contacts, so you would be able to keep in touch without having to wait for the other after practices or matches. Speaking of which, you told Sunghoon that you would quit the cheerleading team, and even though he was worried that it was because of him and this whole fake dating thing, you were quick to reassure him that it had nothing to do with it. You merely didn’t enjoy it anymore, and it’s not like you had any supportive friends there.
Hearing that, the boy seemed quite disheartened as if he had any say in how the girls in the team acted. Instead, when you brought up the fact that you could still join any dance-related club because it was early into the semester, and they were still recruiting members, he mentioned that Jake’s girlfriend was a member of a dance club.
“Oh really? Which one?”
“Well, that… I don’t know which one,” he admitted, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. You let out a giggle seeing his reaction; the way his face changed from enthusiastic to confused so quickly. People might have said that he had a stern face, but you would object. He might have seemed nonchalant and icy to some, but when someone got into a conversation with him, all of these different sides of him surfaced, and you realised that you liked discovering the Sunghoon that not everyone had the chance to know.
“It’s okay, you can let me know once you get to know about it,” you pointed out with a smile as you reminded him that you now had each other’s contact. His shoulders easened and he let his lips curl upwards seeing your smile.
You talked a bit more before you suggested going back to the dorms. Sunghoon offered to walk back with you since he was also heading that way, and you didn’t want to tell him that it didn’t even cross your mind that you would go separately after last time.
You were right, the heightened attention that you got because Jaehyeok had told the others that you were dating Sunghoon died down after a week or so. You quit the cheerleading team in the meantime, so you were out of their group chat too, and that probably added to the sudden lack of questions. You had some glances from people who knew who you were, but otherwise, things went back to normal. To be precise, almost normal.
Though you had no idea what to consider fake-dating Park Sunghoon to be. It was definitely not your usual way of doing things, but Jaehyeok backed off ever since Sunghoon’s lie, and it’s not like the boy forced anything onto you. In fact, he was the most considerate soul ever. He indeed asked Jake which dance club his girlfriend went to, and you joined the same after the boys introduced you two to each other. It was nice to get to know someone who was close to the boys, and who definitely didn’t make you feel small after getting to know about your deal with Sunghoon. Ajung knew about it because Sunghoon’s friends were the only ones who knew, but she wasn’t weirded out by it.
You got to know about how they had known each other with Jake, how they had gotten together, and she also shared how it felt to date one of the rugby players. She had a different experience to yours because she wasn’t a cheerleader, but she still got stares and hateful messages. At the end of the day, what mattered to her was that Jake loved her, and she had never questioned his loyalty.
“I guess it’s because I could never imagine him meeting other girls behind my back that I don’t take those messages to heart,” Ajung admitted once, and it dawned on you that you had felt insecure in your relationship with Jaehyeok because you had been afraid he had been meeting other girls. You had been right, but still; just the fact that you could have imagined him cheating on you should have been a major red flag.
On the other hand, you couldn’t imagine the same about Sunghoon. Even if you were technically not together, the boy made sure time and time again that he was fine with it and wasn’t meeting other girls. So when he went to the after-match parties without you because you didn’t feel like going anymore, you weren’t afraid that he was kissing other girls. Which was a surprising realisation to come to, because one would think that you lost all hope in trusting guys after Jaehyeok. Maybe it would have been true had it been for someone else, but you trusted Sunghoon. Even more so because he was always on your side, even if it meant getting into a fight with Jaehyeok after his rugby practice.
You were studying in the library after classes, and you knew that Sunghoon was supposed to finish around this time, so you shot him a message, only to be left on read for half an hour. Hence, you packed up your stuff and went back to the dorms, not wanting to force anything onto the boy.
However, almost as soon as you arrived at the dorms, you got a message from Jake, saying that you should probably talk to Sunghoon because he had a rough day. He was out with Ajung, but Sunghoon would probably be in their dorm room, so you could talk to him in private.
You didn’t need to be told twice; you walked up to the boys’ dorm room (knowing all too well where they lived in the halls since walking back to the dorms together became a habit of yours), and knocked on their door. You didn’t get an answer, so you messaged the boy again. You started getting worried when Sunghoon suddenly showed up in the corridor, already changed back into his usual jeans, a tee and a cardigan thrown over it. When he caught sight of you in front of their door, his eyes widened and his lips visibly parted.
On the other hand, you had the same reaction, but not because of his presence, it was because of the bruise around his lips and on his jaw. It didn’t look like he had hurt himself during practice as you had been familiar with those kinds of injuries due to Jaehyeok. It looked like he had been in a fight.
“Oh my gosh, Sunghoon! Are you okay?” You immediately went up to him, checking on his bruises from closer, yet not touching him because you didn’t want to be invasive. So you looked up at him, waiting for him to reply, but instead of words, he closed the distance between you two and hugged you.
You were so bewildered that you just stood there, blinking rapidly, and you could neither say anything, nor do anything. Your heart, on the other hand, was beating so erratically, you were afraid that it would jump out of your ribcage.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?” You asked, totally confused, while you hugged the boy back. As you laced your arms around his waist, you could feel the boy tense a bit, probably unprepared for you hugging him back, but he eased into your touch a few seconds later.
“For what you had to deal with beside Jaehyeok,” he explained gently, quietly like a confession, murmuring the words into your hair. You were so used to words that cut like a knife that his words - that were like a soothing cream on a bruised heart - felt like a remedy, the boy tending to your broken heart with only a few syllables, a few breaths of words.
You hugged him back tighter, stronger, a silent response to his sentence, and soaked up this warmth, this comforting feeling for a few seconds before you took a step back and pulled yourself out of the hug. You looked up at him, heart churning at the sight but even more so when your hunch was proven right.
“Was it his doing?” You asked as you pointed at his face, and the boy didn’t need to be asked twice. He nodded, but there was no remorse in his tone when he spoke up.
“I was the one who punched him first. I couldn’t just stand what he was saying about you. He is so-”
“I know,” you cut him off, knowing all too well that whatever he was going to say was something you already knew. Instead, you asked if he had treated his bruises already (though it didn’t seem like it), and when he confirmed that he hadn’t, yet he had bought some antiseptic and plasters from the pharmacy, you offered to help him tend to his wound.
He seemed startled for a few seconds, but didn’t object. He let you inside their dorm room instead, and pushed a few things off his study desk, so he could put down his bag and get the pharmacy’s plastic bag out of it. He fumbled a bit with the bag before he reached it out to you, and just stood there as if he didn’t know what to do himself until you told him that it would probably be better if you both sat down because you know, he was quite tall…
“Oh yeah, right… sorry,” he scratched the back of his neck sheepishly before taking a seat on his bed and pushing a few things onto the edge of his bed, so you could sit beside him comfortably.
You only realised how close you were when you leaned forward to put the antiseptic on the corner of his lip, and you came face-to-face with the moles dotting his face like little black stars on the galaxy of his skin. The shade of his eyes also seemed darker from up close, like the sky when it didn’t yet turn to its darkest, deepest colour, and the way he batted his eyelashes was just as elegant as the boy himself. He seemed so dream-like as he was blinking at your swiftly moving fingers, you were afraid that if you stopped, he would vanish. You wished that you could prolong these moments longer and longer…
Yet, you were finished in no time, and after you put a plaster on the bruise of his jaw, you put everything back into the plastic bag while trying to pacify the crazy beating of your heart. You appreciated that the boy let you do this for him after he had stood up for you even without you being there, and even though he didn’t regret it, you still felt bad for him. He shouldn’t have felt like this was his battle to win, but he was protective over you, more than he should have been given your fake relationship.
“Thank you,” you blurted out as such thoughts circled your mind. “From that after-match party when you asked me if I was okay after seeing Jaehyeok kiss another girl up until today, I feel like you’ve been taking care of me so well, I’m really grateful,” you confessed as you turned towards him again, searching for his eyes.
The boy’s delicate features immediately softened, and you could see it on his face, in his eyes, in the way he held himself that he would have done it again and again if it meant that he could take care of you.
“You deserve it. You really do,” he stated, not leaving room for objection, and that was when it hit you. That emotional overflow that had been building inside of you ever since you had been talking with Sunghoon, and time and time again, he proved to you that you were cared for, and that there were people looking out for you despite what Jaehyeok had been telling you, and that you were your own person, not a nobody.
“Thank you,” you choked out, trying to hold it in, but when tears started prickling your eyes, you knew that it was time to let it all out. So you did, without being ashamed, without feeling weak. This was you, a side of you that you now dared to show the world.
And Sunghoon was there to help you through it all by lending a shoulder to cry on and strong arms to hold you safe and sound, wrapping you up in warmth and comfort.
Something changed that day, and you could feel the shift in your relationship.
It’s not that you two were cold towards each other before, you were merely more tentative. You appreciated it, the fact that Sunghoon kept his distance, and he was as polite about every little touch, every little action as one could be, but after that night, you started opening up slowly, letting each other in more and more.
It was gradual, of course. With your history with Jaehyeok and Sunghoon’s generally reserved personality, it wasn’t an obvious change from one day to another, but you enjoyed it nevertheless. You enjoyed the walks back to the dorms, the times you spent messaging each other on and off campus, the times when you hang out with him and his friends after matches (instead of hanging out with the cheerleaders and Jaehyeok’s friends), the lunches you grabbed together between classes, and how throughout it all, you got to know that Sunghoon was actually far from quiet when he was around those he was comfortable with.
He was pretty talkative when a topic was brought up that interested him or when he needed to defend his opinion. He was also pretty funny, making funny faces when reacting to certain campus drama and being his extra self when walking into a place where you were waiting for him. He was also very, very caring, but it went without saying by that point; lending you his jacket when autumn arrived with violent winds and unexpected weather conditions from one day to another, buying a drink for you when he knew that you would be staying at the library to study, holding the door for you and offering to bring your books when you were working on an assignment and had to rent a bunch of books for a week, and looking out for your reactions whenever Jaehyeok was brought up in a conversation or the boy was close by.
Actually, with him by your side, it was easier to put your ex in the past; because Sunghoon showed you such a different way of being together with a boy. You were still fake dating, but the way nothing was forced for the sake of social media or the questions of his nosy team members showed you that he would be just as considerate about your feelings and your comfort as if you had been actually dating.
Maybe that’s why it wasn’t that difficult to say yes to a weekend trip to the winter sea with his friends - Jake, Ajung and Jay. It was just the five of you, renting a small apartment for two days and one night in December; two of the boys sharing a room and one of them sleeping on the couch in the living room (it goes without saying that they decided with rock-paper-scissors that it would be Sunghoon on the couch) while you were sharing a room with Ajung.
During the day, you went to the beach to take a long walk alongside the coast, the boys teasing you while splashing water around, taking pictures and having lunch nearby in a cosy little café. You went to a cliff too, Sunghoon reaching his hand out to help you move from one rock to another while walking towards it, and Jake did the same towards Ajung, so Jay was sulking that he was visibly left out. To which, both of the boys joked to offer their help, but Jay just shushed them. They were having too much fun teasing him.
At night, you went to the grocery store and bought ingredients for dinner which you prepared together. To be precise, you weren’t sure Sunghoon was much help as he was singing songs he put on the speakers into a ladle, and Jake was too busy taking pictures of Ajung with a knife (saving it for himself as possible future meme material as he said), but Jay was doing everything so professionally, it seemed like he didn’t need help either way. You tried nevertheless, cutting up the veggies and bringing him stuff from the fridge while he was by the oven, naturally finding something to talk about in the meantime.
“You know, Sunghoon seems happier since you started talking,” he brought it up suddenly while he was stirring the stew. You both glanced in the direction of the boy who was too busy finding a good song to play next, his tongue sticking out in concentration.
“Oh really?” You quirked an eyebrow, feeling a bit shy, because it meant that you had a positive impact on the boy.
“Yeah,” the boy nodded without thinking twice about it. “I’ve never seen him date a girl, but even if you are fake-dating, I think that’s what he would act like,” he added seriously, and there was no hint of mischief in his eyes, hence, you believed him. At least, you wanted to believe him.
However, you had no idea what to say to that, so you just nodded, and as your eyes glanced in the boy’s direction yet again, your heart did a little somersault. Truth to be told, it didn’t really feel like fake-dating at this point because you and Sunghoon actually spent a lot of time together, getting to know each other, and he even invited you for this trip, so that had to mean something. On the other hand, since you hadn’t seen Sunghoon interact with other girls before (except for smiling awkwardly when the cheerleaders had tried to hit on him), you didn’t know how he acted around them.
Nevertheless, you couldn’t keep Jay’s words out of your head for the remaining day, so when it was just the two of you left in the living room as Sunghoon was making his bed (aka his couch) and you were refilling your water bottle, you felt like you had to ask the boy the same.
“Sunghoon…” You started tentatively as you halted beside the couch which was now covered with a bedsheet, a fluffy blanket and a pillow. The boy looked up from his haphazardly made bed, finding your eyes. He tilted his head like he always did when he was confused, but there was a hint of curiosity in his midnight-black orbs.
“Hmm?”
“Jay said that you seem happier since we started talking,” you said it in one-go, fiddling with the protective layer around your water bottle. “Do you agree with him?”
Silence settled over you two after your question, and even though it was probably just a few seconds, your heartbeat felt twice as heavy as before as you were waiting for his answer. Sunghoon’s confused features easened into a more natural state, but there was a hue tinting his cheeks pinkish when he answered:
“Yeah, I’m happier.”
Your shoulders immediately dropped in ease despite the fact that you couldn’t imagine him saying something hurtful even if he might not have agreed with his friend. It’s just… you felt like you hadn’t really been paying attention to his feelings in the beginning of your fake dating since you had been buried under all the hurt from Jaehyeok. When you had managed to pick yourself up from that dark hole, Sunghoon had already been acting the way he did nowadays, so you couldn’t tell whether he was happier or not. Not to mention that you hadn’t really been looking his way in the first semester because you had been dating a different rugby player.
Now though, you couldn’t imagine not seeing him and not looking for him. His presence could always bring a sense of comfort, and he didn’t even have to say anything, you were just fine being beside him. On top of that, you could be yourself beside him, you knew that. He had seen you when you had been vulnerable and torn, and he hadn’t taken advantage of that, nor had he said anything that might have implied that you should change your ways around him.
“Well, me too,” you admitted as your thoughts kept circling back to the warmth he spread, the gratitude he made you feel, the happiness he bloomed in your chest and… to him. “I like you,” you found yourself saying as you overcame with all the emotions leading up to this point, but you immediately bit down on your lower lip when you realised what you had just said.
Sunghoon seemed shocked for a moment, then shy, then baffled again as if he didn’t want to believe his ears.
“Oh, I, well…” He blabbered coyly, not finding the right words to say. Even in this state, you found him cute because he was trying. He was just nervous like you, but you could wait for him to say what he wanted to say. Not like you could budge, you were entranced either way.
Sunghoon cleared his throat to regain his courage, then as he stepped closer to you, he finally said:
“I like you too.”
And then his arms were around you, strong yet gentle, and you inhaled his sandalwood perfume, your heart thumping against your chest, wild and free. You realised then and there that you had been secretly waiting for this moment, and you wanted to stay in it as long as possible.
“So no more fake dating, I assume?” He murmured into your hair, his voice a bit raspy yet laced with joy.
“No more,” you agreed with a slight bob of your head, and let him hug you tighter, stronger as if he never wanted to let you go.

in honour of being promoted to Deputy Stage Manager in my school's theatre department, top gun high school/sixth form au:
Dr Kazansky rules the drama department with an iron fist. always wearing black turtlenecks. never seen without his glasses, his coffee, and his terrifying glare (which earned him the moniker Dr Iceman). do not show up to rehearsals if you don't know your lines. death be upon the poor students who fuck around during tech and dress, because they will find out. he loves the crew tho.
Mr Call-Me-Mav Mitchell is the head of sports. you name it, he's played it, and he could absolutely give you pointers, also, do you want a protein bar with that? it's chocolate flavoured :) even the kids who Hate (capital H) sports love him. he is sunshine and adrenaline in human form. endless energy. no one knows why he is called maverick, but even the principal does it, so.
Mr Kerner is the principal. he is also the only person who can interrupt rehearsals and survive. dr kazansky loves him. inexplicably, maverick hates him. nough said.
Jake Seresin is the school's golden child, not even because he's Kazansky's nephew. he’s head boy. he’s on the school’s football/rugby team. he writes regular articles for the internal magazines. and this year, he’s playing Orpheus in the school’s production of Hadestown. everyone thinks it’s nepotism. it is and it’s not, jake just lost a bet to his Uncle Tom, and must now reap the consequences to said uncle’s delight.
Bradley Bradshaw has been stage crew since he was thirteen and an overworked runner, thank you very much. it’s his final show, he’s the DSM, and if fucking seresin ruins this for him, he will riot. dr kazansky should never let that happen. however, this is the same man who, last year, laughed when revealing that a screen on stage had turned off and bradley had to go on stage during the show to fix it. hm. maybe bradley should have re-thought his life choices. also: the turntable. the goddamn turntable.
other characters include: phoenix as eurydice, bob doing lighting, payback and fanboy as ASMs who flirt over the comms to everyones misery, cyclone as another drama teacher/stage manager,
maverick keeps turning up to rehearsals and trying to help because his favourite (cough only cough) godson and his favourite player are both interested in this stuff, so he should at least try, right? kazansky hates it until he doesn’t. kerner thinks it’s all fucking hilarious. bradley is embarrassed but its kinda endearing do NOT tell him i said that.
kazansky and maverick both bare witness to A Moment between their respective pseudo sons and decide the two simply must get together for their sakes and also so they never inflict that on another person ever.
bradley and jake both bare witness to A Moment between their respective pseudo fathers and decide the two simply must get together for their sakes and also so they never inflict that on another person ever.
kerner is cackling. Cackling.

Team Player 1/7
Hangster. Jake's cousin plays for the Sydney Roosters and gifts him with merchandise regularly. Bradley has an unexpected realization.
Jake opens the gift from his cousin and snorts. He can never wear this.
“You like it? It’s for the team I just signed with…”
Of course it is. Fuck.
“Congrats man, really happy for you. Thanks.”
“You’ll have to watch a game when you come visit. Wait, do they show footy matches on TV here?”
“Footy? Jake asks, eyebrow raised, because he thought is was rugby that Josh played.
“Rugby league. Footy. And we don’t wear all those pads and helmets like you lot do over here.”
Jake ducks his head to hide a smile, his younger cousin immensely proud of his own country and national sport. Not something Jake will ever understand, but he does understand passion and loyalty.
… … …
“The Hard Deck, what’s that mean?”
“Well, the way you say it makes it sound like something far filthier than what I think it should mean…”
“Still doesn’t tell me what it means… Hard Deck Hard Deck Hard Deck…”
“Oh my god, can you stop with sayin’ that! Sound like you’re sayin’ you’ve got a hard dick…”
His other cousins snort and he wonders why he thought it would be a good idea to agree showing them around San Diego. Of course, three people in their early to mid-twenties versus their parents who are all in their mid-sixties to seventies he’d felt that maybe they’d want a break from one another. He can’t imagine going on a four-week vacation with his parents. Ever. Let alone as a fully-grown adult. A couple of weeks visiting home is his limit, and even then he has to spend most of the time out of the house and helping out around outside to get away from the oppressive expectation of how he hasn’t brought anyone home. Again.
“Tell me what it means!”
“It’s slang for altitude you idiot, now stop being a dick!” Emma says, slapping at her younger brother’s head and Jake wishes he had a closer relationship with his own sister.
“Well that’s just boring! Hard Dick sounds like we’re going somewhere interesting!”
“It’s a Navy bar, just… thought I’d introduce you to a couple of my friends.”
“You have friends?” Isabella asks, and Jake pulls a face. Maybe he’s glad he doesn’t have a close relationship after all.
“Jake!”
“Javy, hey. Man it’s good to see you.”
“You too… these your cousins? Can definitely see they got the better deal in the gene pool…” Javy says, smiling over Jake’s should and he glances back and he guesses his cousins are attractive, except they’re his cousins and he’s seen them grow up through regular photos exchanged via their parents, and this is only the third time in his life that he’s spent any significant chunk of time with them. And of course Javy is already getting flirty with them. Halo and Fritz are there, he can see Bob and Phoenix at the bar.
“Yeah. Everyone, these are my cousins Isabella, Emma and Josh. They’re currently visiting because of my dad’s seventieth birthday. And don’t let him drink,” Jake says, pointing at Josh. “He’s not legal.”
“Hey! It’s legal back home.”
“And Penny here could be fined for serving minors. So no.”
“Also you’re meant to be preparing for camp, which means no empty calories.”
“Ugh. You guys are the worst.”
“I can’t wait for you to meet your trainers, because what we put you through will seem like child’s play…”
It falls into easy banter, his cousins asking dozens of questions and his squadron humoring them and he takes a sip of beer from the bottle Phoenix hands him.
Life is good.
… … …
“You want to tell us something there Bagman?”
“What?”
She tugs at his top and he glances down, realizes he’s wearing the tank that Josh sent him for working out in. He apparently gets a lot of merchandise and Jake seems to be the person he wants to send it to. Apparently he has a case of hero worship. However this particular top is damned comfortable and perfect for working out in, almost as good as wearing nothing, which isn’t an option at the on-base gymnasium, but he’d just grabbed it subconsciously.
“Uh, it’s the team my cousin plays for.”
“And you’re wearing it why?”
“I like it,” he says, and he mentally hits himself in the forehead with his palm. What the fuck is he thinking. He could have said it’s comfortable, or it’s washing day, only clean thing I had, not… I like it.
“Really? Interesting. Wait, was this your male cousin? Josh?”
“Yeah. It’s a rugby team.”
“Mmm. Rugby is a game to enjoy watching…”
“What?”
“No covering up of those athletic bodies, all out on show… Strike a pose Seresin, I’ll send it to you so you can send it to your cousin and show your appreciation.”
He frowns, because Josh would probably like that, but he’s pretty sure Trace is up to something because she never calls him Seresin. He stands and lets her take the photo though, giving her a grin and a wink, because why the hell not?
… … …
Bradley stares at his phone.
Stares some more until the screen goes black and he unlocks it and the photo is back.
Jake Seresin wearing a basketball top, sweat-shiny and winking at the camera, hair dark, damp and mussed from working out. He looks good. That’s all his brain can process.
Natasha’s message telling him he really missed a good workout at the gym.
Bradley’s never thought about his callsign as a thing before, as a name that might brand someone as his. He’s never been a particularly possessive boyfriend. Seeing Hangman wear a top with Roosters across the front makes his fingers itch, and not only because he wants to go and add an apostrophe, but because he wants to touch. He’s wanted to touch Hangman before, sometimes to punch him in the face, but mostly to rough him up a little bit… he’s always resisted though, aware he’s got to keep sharp control of his temper.
Right now it’s not his temper he has to keep control of.
To be continued? 🤷♀️

Sunghoon x reader
Angst, slight fluff
The way that the members are depicted in this story has nothing to do with how they really are or how I feel they are. It is all solely for the storyline so please bear that in mind 🫶
I would also like to add that I know literally nothing about rugby 😁
Summary: Sunghoon was notorious for being cold-hearted to everyone and he’s aware of how many girls at school are dying to melt his frozen heart. Surely nothing would change once Sunoo introduces his friend to the boys
Heeseung is in his final year, 02z are in their 3rd year, Sunoo & Y/N are in their 2nd, and Jungwon & Niki are in their 1st
F/N = female name
Warnings: cursing, slight violence, name calling, gaslighting (please let me know if I need to add any more 🤍)

It was just like any other day at Hybe Academy and the 7 boys known as Enhypen were making their way to their lectures. The high-pitched squeals of girls asking how their day was or if they were free to “hang out” was nothing new to them.
Don’t get it wrong though. They never asked for all of this attention but being the top players of the school’s rugby team, they were bound to attract the eyes of the girls, as well as the odd few envious eyes from the guys.
The 7 boys were a tight knit group ever since they were little. Their parents were great friends and wanted their children to all get along just like they did. Heeseung being the oldest, was extremely protective of all of them and provided them with an older brother figure to guide them through everything. And once the youngest of the group Niki was born, they finally felt that they were complete.
They have been inseparable since day one and nothing was going to change that. Yes the odd few girlfriends would come and go but they never lasted more than a few weeks. But it didn’t matter to them when it came to relationships because at the end of the day, they would always have each other.
Out of all of them, Sunghoon was by far the coldest one. Of course he wasn’t like that around his friends but once the popularity started to build up, so did his walls. You see, Sunghoon was naturally introverted and any hated attention on him. It made him feel so crowded as if he was some kind of show animal.
His mysterious personality paired with his god-like visuals only pushed for girls to want to win his heart over. And trust me, they were persistent. Especially the captain of the cheerleading team F/N who just so happened to be in the same year as the 02s.
Every rugby practice would end with F/N clinging onto his arm and asking if he wanted to join her for whatever party was going on that week. Of course Sunghoon would decline every time with a scowl on his face as he could see through her act.
F/N was a pretty girl but she had been trying to weave her way into the group for ages. Was it for popularity? Was it just to brag? Who knows? And who cares? Certainly not them.
F/N had already tried to suck up to Jay and Jake but there was no going through them. So she went to her final target because why not kill two birds with one stone? She could be apart of their group AND say she was the girlfriend of the ice prince. Nothing was going to stop her and no one would dare to.
Time skip
It was finally time for lunch and everyone slowly started to filter into the cafeteria. At the moment the boys, apart from Sunoo, were sat at their designated table having a catch up on their day and planning on who’s house they were going to hang out at after school.
“Has anyone seen Sunoo hyung?” Jungwon asked.
“He’s probably busy in the library or something. He did mention that there was a partner project coming up so he’s probably sorting that out.” Jay responded
“Hey Sunoo hyung!!!”
The whole cafeteria quickly turned to their table after Niki shouted across to his friend.
Heeseung chuckled “Talk about a grand entrance or what”
Sunoo walked over with his head down after feeling embarrassed by the youngest member. “Could’ve been more obvious you know Niki”
“Sorry hyung. I was just so scared that you weren’t in our presence and just felt so relieved that you’re alive!” Niki exclaimed with a hand on his heart
With a roll of his eyes at Niki’s dramatic answer, Sunoo explained “I was just having a conversation with Y/N. We’ve been partnered up together for this project and had to sort out when we could meet up.”
Niki’s eyes widened “Y/N?! She was the one that helped me and Jungwon hyung find a lecture hall in our first week. You should bring her here when you meet up Sunoo hyung. She was so nice and I never got to properly thank her”
At this Sunghoon, who had peacefully been savouring his tiramisu, couldn’t help but scoff at what Niki said.
“Really Niki? She’s probably just like every other girl just trying to get our attention. She probably knew that you two were close to us and put up a cute act to make it seem like she’s doing it out of the kindness of her heart.”
His comment caused a sudden feeling of overprotectiveness to come up in Sunoo.
“Yah don’t talk about her like that! Y/N is the most genuine person ever and we’re great friends actually. She’s been helping me a lot since we started here but I never brought her up because I knew you’d react like this”
The members were startled at Sunoo’s outburst as it was the first time he had raised his voice in a serious matter.
Before anything could escalate, Jake stepped in to mediate the conversation and turned to Sunoo “Look, I’m sure Sunghoon didn’t mean to insult your friend like that. You know that he can just say things that sound harsher than he intended”
“But that doesn’t excuse anything. None of you have even properly met her and you jump to conclusions about anyone who shows an act of kindness”
Sunghoon spoke up again “I’m sorry Sunoo. I know we can be harsh when it comes to letting new people in but we’ve been fucked over way too many times and I don’t want you to end up getting hurt again”
Sunoo understood where he was coming from. Throughout his life, people had taken advantage of his kindness and used him as a stepping stone to gain the attention of his older friends. But he knew you were different. You never once diverted the topic of the conversation to his friends or remotely showed any sort of interest in getting to know them.
“I get that but I’m telling you that Y/N is not like everyone else. I know it’s what everyone says but I’m being serious about this”
Heeseung spoke up and said “You know what, maybe we shouldn’t be so stuck up and let Y/N sit with us next time. She seems to be someone that you trust a lot Sunoo so there’s no harm in her sticking with you”
Both Sunoo and Niki cheered at their hyung and happily carried on eating their lunch. But Sunghoon still couldn’t help but feel slightly wary about you.
The next day
Y/N’s POV:
“Hey Y/N!”
I turned around with a smile on my face and was met with Sunoo making his way towards me. Sunoo and I became very close since first term where he turned up late to a lecture and took the empty space next to me. His bright smile and bubbly personality always made my day better and it turned out that we had similar interests.
One of our favourite things to do together was to rant about the unbearable cheerleading captain from the year above. Her fake, high pitched voice pierced through our ears every time she found an attractive guy come within her vicinity.
“Omg Sunooo! Where is Hoonie?!? I’ve been looking all over for him and he’s no where to be found! I’m planning for my birthday party in a month and I need him so we can match our outfits” F/N shrieked as she grabbed onto him whilst completely ignoring my presence.
“For fuck sake F/N. First of all, don’t call Sunghoon hyung Hoonie, it’s disgusting and he hates it. Second of all, when will you take the hint that he wants nothing to do with you?” Sunoo snapped back
“Well for your information, Hoonie is just playing hard to get. I know likes the thrill of having the most gorgeous girl of this school chasing after him but he knows at the end of the day, we’re perfect for each other.”
I don’t think I’ve ever had a stronger urge to throw up after hearing her cringy words. I could tell that Sunoo was having none of it from his side eye directed towards F/N. Seeing the obvious look of disgust, I couldn’t help but slightly chuckle at him. Only then did F/N finally acknowledge me with a glare.
“What are you laughing at? You’re just one of those sad losers that try so desperately for any guy to even look in your direction. That’s probably why you stick around with Sunoo isn’t it? You just want to be one of us so bad don’t you” F/N got in my face and started taunting me.
Sunoo was ready to go and roast her like a turkey on Thanksgiving but I quickly responded “One of you? From what it seems F/N, you seem to paint the perfect description of yourself. You know, the desperate puppy chasing her precious Hoonie who wants nothing more than to send you off to a shelter. But I can see that you’re not the brightest and can’t comprehend logic very well so let me spell it out for you. I want absolutely nothing to do with you or Sunoo’s friends. I stick with Sunoo because I care about him and we get along well. Obviously you wouldn’t understand that concept since the people that leech onto you are just your minions that use you to their advantage with the cheer team.”
I could sense Sunoo silently hyping me up from behind, but what can I say? He taught me well.
F/N’s face turned red and she screamed back “HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT YOU BITCH! You’re just jealous of me aren’t you? You’re salty that you thought you could be the cheerleading captain but you’re just shit and excused it as you having an injury! You can’t handle the fact that I have everything you dream of”
“You really think that I’m jealous of you being captain of the cheerleading team? Well I hate to break it to you F/N but I have a life outside of cheer and have moved on. I have people around me that actually care about me but what do you have? Just an obsession with someone who won’t spare you a glance I guess.”
The built up rage in F/N made her raise her hand to slap me but I grabbed her wrist
“Look F/N I don’t want to deal with you ok. You always find a way to get in my face about the most ridiculous shit but I’m sick of it now. I’m not dealing with your bullshit any more”
*School bell rings*
“I’m not finished with you Y/N. You better watch yourself before you regret it” F/N spat as she snatched her wrist away and stormed off.
Other students in the hallway started mumbling about what just happened but I couldn’t care less about what they had to say.
I turned to Sunoo and said sarcastically “Oh so scary! Shiver me timbers 😱”
We both laughed with each other and got ready for our lecture
Time skip
“Hey Y/N, we should probably get started on our project. Why don’t you sit with me and the boys for lunch since I have practice after school?”
“I’m not sure Sunoo. I don’t want to interfere with you guys and after everything that happened this morning with F/N, I’m not exactly interested in having her coming over and causing another scene.”
“No Y/Nie! I swear it will be ok for you to sit with us! They said they don’t mind you eating lunch with us. That’s if you’re comfortable with it though”
“Wait you told them about me?”
“Yeah! They know we’ve been partnered for the project so they won’t bombard you with questions. Also Niki and Jungwon really want to talk to you since you helped them during their first week here.”
Oh I remember those cuties. They were walking around in circles and bickering about which direction to go to in the maths department.
“Ah Niki and Jungwon? I’d love to catch up with them! They’re so cute!”
“But I’m cuter though”
“Of course you are Sunoo”
At the cafeteria
The students looked at me and Sunoo in shock as we both made our way to the boys’ table. I didn’t look at anyone since I knew that I would just be met with envious eyes
What is Y/N doing with them?
I bet she’s just trying to get with one of them
Didn’t she just accuse F/N of doing exactly what she’s doing right now
Well isn’t this fun? I’ve stayed out of drama for my entire time I’ve been here and all of a sudden I’m the centre of the gossip.
“Don’t listen to them Y/Nie. If you want I can roast the shit out of them?” Sunoo whispered
I laughed at his overprotectiveness and responded “It’s ok they’re just finding any way to get some gossip”
We got to the table and Sunoo introduced me to everyone. I was met with charming smiles from everyone. Well, except one.
“Hi Y/N! It’s nice to finally meet you. Sunoo has told us a lot about you” Jay said politely
“Ah hope there was nothing bad” I responded nervously
Jake laughed “No of course not. He’s been going on about how amazing you are and we also heard that you’ve already met Jungwon and Niki”
“Hi noona!” The two younger boys greeted
We all fell into a comfortable conversation as we got to know each other but I could see Sunghoon sitting quietly, sending me the odd glare every now and then.
Heeseung saw as well and spoke up “Sunghoon are you ok? Why don’t you get to know Y/N as well?”
All Sunghoon did was scoff and mumble “Nah I’m good” before getting up abruptly and leaving the cafeteria.
There was a lingering awkward silence before Sunoo reassured me “Don’t mind him Y/Nie. Sunghoon hyung just has a hard time warming up to new people, that’s all.”
I gave him a small smile and thankfully we all carried on our conversation and steered off the awkward moment that just happened.
Time skip
As it turns out, the boys are the sweetest people ever minus Sunghoon and we’ve been hanging out almost every day since. They called me their little sister (ofc older sister for the younger ones but still little in terms of height 😤) and it really did feel like I had a bunch of protective brothers with me.
I’ve been trying to get to know Sunghoon as well, especially since I feel guilty of just turning up in the group out of no where. But I still wanted to respect his boundaries so I never pushed. When I did have the chance to speak to him, they all felt very one-sided on my part as he only responded with short answers before leaving.
For the past few weeks, everyone has been stressing as we all had exams coming up which contributed to 50% of our grade for the year. The older ones were practically living in the library with barely any time to sleep or eat. I knew they felt the most pressure since they were in their final years and the grades that they got now had an impact on if they could graduate or not.
Even though I have exams coming up too, I’ve been a bit more chill since they weren’t as intense. So during my free time at home, I’ve been making lunch for the boys since there’s no way of getting them away from studying if it’s not rugby practice. It’s not much but at least they’re not starving.
I woke up extra early today to make them all some lunch and packed it ready so I could go to the convenient store on the way to school and buy extra snacks.
At the convenient store
I picked out a load of snacks and ramen so the boys could have a bit of energy during their study time. It was mostly just some generic snacks but I still made sure to pick out everything mint choco flavour for Sunoo (aka my favourite person). In the dessert aisle I saw tiramisu and remembered that Sunghoon would eat it for almost every lunch. Hopefully he won’t think I’m some creep 😬 He had still been distant but it was better than him storming away from me every time he sees me.
Time skip to school
Just as the school bell rang, Sunoo and I packed up my things and I quickly brought out his snacks so he could eat some on the way to the library.
“Ah thank you Y/Nie! I actually got you some of your favourite snacks since you’ve been feeding us all so well the past few days”
“Sunoo you didn’t have to thank you so much! This is why you’re my favourite” I smiled at him as we traded snacks
“Of course I am” Sunoo said smugly and flipped his hair before we laughed and went to meet with the others
At the library
The boys greeted the two of us as we arrived and I started handing out the food that I made and snacks. Their faces lit up at the sight of food and they were quick to thank me for it.
As I got around to Sunghoon, I handed him the tiramisu and the boys started to tease him with Niki asking why he got special treatment.
Sunghoon rolled his eyes but I could see a small smile as he thanked me and started to eat.
We spent a few hours studying and every so often we’d have a small break. I felt thirsty so I decided to refill my drink
“Hey Sunoo I’m just going to quickly go to the water fountain, make sure Niki doesn’t try to break my laptop pleaseee”
“Haha of course I can”
The corridors were basically empty at this point so I didn’t have to worry about there being a queue for the water fountain. There were the odd few students who sent me a smile but other than that, it was a quick trip.
Just as I finished filling my bottle, I could hear faint footsteps but I didn’t think anything of it.
“Hey Y/N. Can I quickly talk to you?”
I turned around and there was Sunghoon standing awkwardly and avoiding eye contact with me.
“Sure, is everything alright?”
“Yeah. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to get food for us”
I was shocked at what he said. Not because he was thanking me, but because he came to talk to me first.
“No worries Sunghoon! I know you guys are stressed and you need to look after yourselves so this was the least I could do” I responded with a bright smile
And if I wasn’t shocked enough, he sent back a shy smile to me. Maybe he doesn’t hate me that much then…
We both made our way back and the rest of the guys were having a small conversation
“Hey Y/N you should come and watch us practice tomorrow” Jake suggested
“Really? I mean I guess it would be nice to see”
“Yeah! I’m gonna show noona that I’m the best player” Niki bragged and the rest of the boys started to playfully argue with each other that they were the best.
At rugby practice
The boys were warming up as I went to find a seat with the best view of them. Unfortunately for me though, I also had a view of the cheer team practicing by the field. The sight of F/N and her minions alone was enough to ruin my mood
Just then, the boys started their practice game and my attention was quickly turned to them. Seeing how well they worked together was truly amazing and it was no wonder why they were the top players in the school.
As I carried on watching them, my eyes couldn’t help but land on Sunghoon every so often. And to my surprise he started to look back at me as well and we’d hold eye contact till I’d try to divert my attention.
Their coach told them to take a break and the boys made their way over to me, where their water was. I told them how well they did and they all smiled and thanked me before jogging back onto the field. But Sunghoon stayed back a bit longer and I could see the gears turning in his head
“Do you think I did well?” He asked
I could feel the blush creeping up my cheeks as I answered him “You did amazing Sunghoon!”
He flashed the brightest smile and I thought at that moment my heart had stopped.
I was so distracted by the beautiful sight in front of me that I couldn’t feel the burning glare aimed towards me from across the field.
The next day
I could barely sleep last night. I still felt giddy about the small interaction with Sunghoon during practice yesterday. But I felt energised at the thought of seeing him again.
Wait what am I thinking?!?
No there’s no way
Do I have a crush on Sunghoon?
I mean if I do, is there anything wrong with that?
All these thoughts clouded my mind at the thought of me liking Sunghoon. But if I say anything or act on it, he might take it the wrong way. Especially since it’s taken time for me to try and build a friendship with him. Maybe I’ll just carry on as usual and not rush things. Then I can make sure that these feelings are genuine and not spontaneous.
At school
The rugby team had a meeting before lunch about their next big game that will take place a few weeks after exams are over. So I was by myself, waiting for Sunoo in the corridor when all of a sudden, I hear this agitating, grating voice (iykyk 😂)
“Oi Y/N”
I really didn’t want to bother engaging with the owner of the voice so I tried blocking her out and walking away
“Hey don’t ignore me you bitch. I need to have a word with you.”
I rolled my eyes and turned towards her
“What do you want F/N?”
“I don’t know who the hell you think you are but you better stay away from my Hoonie. He belongs to me and he doesn’t need to be constantly cornered by a desperate rat.”
“What makes you think he’s yours? Sunghoon and I are clearly just friends and we can actually have conversations together because unlike you, I treat him like a person, not some trophy to be won and shown off for my own pleasure.”
F/N laughed with pity as she snapped back “Really? You guys are friends? Come on Y/N. I know you don’t have any friends of your own which is why you stay with Sunoo all of the time. But I can see through your act. You like Sunghoon don’t you? I could tell from the way you looked like a lovesick puppy yesterday but guess what? He will never like you back because he’s way out of your league and he knows it. Think about it. Why do you think he warmed up to you so quick when you guys barely talked? He doesn’t care about you. He’s playing with you so he can have a bit of entertainment and you were just gullible enough to play into his game. So give up. He’s had his fun messing with you now and it’s time that him and I make our relationship official.”
Her words pierced through me like a knife but I wasn’t going to let her think that she could hurt me.
“Oh give me a break F/N I already said that Sunghoon and I were friends so why does it bother you so much? Is it because he at least looks at me? If you’ve been waiting so long to make your relationship ‘official’ then why hasn’t it happened yet? Just because Sunghoon hasn’t as much as spared you a glance, doesn’t mean you should take your insecurities out onto me.”
Before she could respond, I stormed off and I felt the stinging tears starting to fall. I knew that she said all of those things to purposely hurt me a try to make me back off from the boys. But she doesn’t mean shit to me and there is no way I would take that bitch’s word over theirs.
Time skip
I had finally calmed down before I got ready to meet the boys in the library. Sunoo had called me during lunch to tell me that their coach had bought the team food so I wasn’t able to see them then. The thought of seeing them made me feel slightly better and almost made me forget what F/N had said before.
When I entered the library, I saw everyone but Sunghoon with their work out and their heads down in concentration. I put on the brightest smile I could muster greeted them all, which they returned and started to hand out all of their food.
I looked up from my bag and saw Sunghoon standing stoically as it looked like he paused on his way over. I flashed him a smile, ready to show him the food I had made him but he rolled his eyes and walked away.
Sunoo was the only person that witnessed the encounter and he angrily spat “What the fuck crawled between his ass cheeks?”
I was absolutely stunned by what just happened but I still said “I don’t know but I’ll go talk to him.”
“Do you want me to go with you?” Sunoo asked
“No don’t worry. You guys carry on with what you’re doing” I gave them a quick smile before running out.
“Hey! Sunghoon is everything alright? I’ve bought you some f-”
“Stop Y/N! Why won’t you just leave me alone?” Sunghoon turned to me with a cold look on his face
“I-I’m sorry Sunghoon. I thought you’d be hungry after studying and just wanted to make sure you’re ok” I was at a loss for words with the way he was acting. Tears began to form in my eyes as he stared at me with burning hatred. Did he figure out that I might have feelings for him?
“You know I really thought you were going to be different from the rest of them. And seeing how much Sunoo adored you, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt because maybe, just maybe, you were someone we could trust. But I can see it now and I was too blind before. You’re no different to them. You’re just as desperate to try and get in between my brothers and I. And for what? For some dick? I should’ve trusted my instincts from the start but now I see how pathetic you are, thinking you could buy our friendship and try to get in our pants. It’s actually quite funny how ridiculous you are”
I could not believe the words that I was hearing. Did he really see me like this? F/N was really telling me the truth and now I look like a complete fool.
Without thinking, I slapped him across the face. The rage built up inside me after hearing his vile words and my tears started pouring down
“How fucking dare you Park Sunghoon. I did nothing to try and interfere with you and your friends. I decided to be nice to you all and make an effort because Sunoo wanted me to sit at your table. Not once before that did I ever give a flying fuck about you and your friends but seeing how nice the others were, I thought it would be worth the effort for Sunoo’s sake. I truly and deeply care about each and every one about you. Do you really think I’d put in all of this effort trying to get to know you all and wake up early to make sure you guys are fed if my goal was to just sleep with you? That is absolutely disgusting and I refuse to let anyone, especially you talk down to me like that. Before this all happened, we didn’t know shit about each other and now you think I would all of a sudden try to gain your attention now? Well I’m sorry your majesty but you need to pull that stick out of your ass and come back to Earth because surprise surprise, not everyone in this school just wants to fuck you.”
At this point I didn’t care if people were staring at me having a go at him with tears streaming down my face.
“You know, I really thought there was someone sweet under the hard facade you put up but it turns out that you really are just a cold, stuck up bastard. I can’t believe that I thought that I was starting to fall for you. But thank you for waking me from that ridiculous fantasy. Goodbye Sunghoon”
Third person’s POV
Sunghoon was left absolutely speechless the whole time as you walked away. He so desperately wanted to grab you and ask what you meant but he remained still. He really fucked this up didn’t he? He thought he was doing the right thing to protect him and his brothers but seeing how genuinely hurt you were, it was clear that he got the wrong end of the stick. How will he explain to his friends what happened, especially Sunoo.
Wait you liked him? Ah shit. All Sunghoon could think about these days was your adorable smile. The way you remembered the small details about everyone and their favourite things. How you looked at him with the softest eyes during rugby practice. He wanted to let you know how he didn’t mean what he said and that in reality, he fell for you too. But it’s too late and now you hate him.
Well done Sunghoon. You just pushed away another person who really cared for you…
Author’s note: So how are we feeling? 😅 maybe we need a part 2? 🤔😏
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my work I really appreciate it and I hope you enjoyed it
I would also like to reiterate that the way the members (especially Sunghoon) are shown in this fic has no correlation to how they really are or the way they come across to me. I love them all so much 🩵

Ask my characters
Attention please all boys :
Who is the one who is most down bad for their y/n and why
(Interview of Rugby Star Players)
Members will be called one by one to sit a chair a little far from where the other boys are. They will be asked to sit and be asked by this question while the others casually goofing around behind them. There’s a safe distance so it will be safe.
“Who is the one who is most down bad for their y/n and why?”
yang jungwon
“I think everyone loves their girlfriends so much and will do anything for them,” Jungwon, the captain starts. He chuckles and roams his eyes around his team members trying to pick one from them. They’re too busy bickering with one another.
“I will pick Heeseung hyung.” he faces the camera and smirks. “Yeah, him. Why? Because almost abandon our game because she’s not watching.” he announces and scoffs.
“Pretty crazy.” he left a last remarks before calling the next member.
lee heeseung
“I will pick me.” he straight up answered without hesitation.
“If you can pick one other member—”
“I pick myself.” and he gave them an unamused look on his face.
park jongseong
“Hmm,” he hums and tilts his head giving it a thought. The member’s face flashes through his mind and his grin widens at the memory of one of them.
“Park Sunghoon. Definitely him.” he scoffs and shakes his head like he can’t believe something.
“Because he don’t normally takes interest in girls since he’s very focus with games and studies. The fact that his girlfriend catches his attention says a lot. He’s practically heads over heels with her.”
jake sim
“Heeseung hyung.” he smiles. “Look, I love my girl so much and will do anything for her but I guess picking myself will be no fun.” he shrugs his shoulders off.
“So its Heeseung hyung. His girlfriend got him wrap around her fingers.” Jake chuckles attractively.
“Oh girls... such dangerous pretty creatures.”

“What’s this? I thought we will be asked about the game?” his placid expression intimidates the interviewer so they smiled awkwardly.
“I-It’s for the school news paper! Your girlfriend, the vice president, wants us to interview the rugby team.” one even says.
They saw how his face evidently brightens at the mention of his girl. His face relaxes and his he glanced away, thinking for an answer.
“Me.” he shortly replied.
“W-Why?” they wanted to ask for him to pick another member, but afraid to spoil his mood.
“The fact that I’m sitting here answering these questions instead of something about the game just proves it. If it weren’t for my girlfriend, I won’t contribute here.”
kim sunoo
The interviewers melted when they saw him smiling brightly as he sat down at the chair. They are star strucked by Kim Sunoo’s beauty. Thankfully, he snaps them out of their trance.
“I think it will be Jake hyung.” he smiles and chuckles.
“Because he stops playing with girls hearts after he met his girlfriend. He’s been annoying me for having too many of them, I’m really glad its finally over.”
nishimura riki
“Is this for the school news paper?” he asks curiously. One of them nodded and he furrowed his brows.
“Why isn’t my girlfriend the one covering this?”
“She’s assigned in a different department.”
He sighs, disappointed. He clicked his tongue before answering their question.
“I pick myself.” he says. “But if you need another member as answer, it would be Sunghoon hyung. He’s just crazy for her. Whipped. A simp.”

Vampire AU | A night at Hometree
As predicted, the rain got to the point where the return was not an option, even for the early return and everyone had returned to the shelter of Hometree with their work or to play games and settle for peaceful tasks and since most of the humans were still getting to know Hometree and the general location, they didn’t wander out either and stuck close to their assigned jobs.
A few children had gotten interested in some of the newcomers and were playfully asking questions and convincing them to play a few games with them. Jerome had put together a makeshift soccer ball made of dried Yerik Bladder that had some weight to it- enough to feel like a kickable ball in the gravity of Pandora—and Harper had taught a group of kids how to play. A new game for the children and enough players, Jake reasoned that it allowed some of the more stressed parents to get a break by the fire with some tea.
“You know, we could give them coloured strips to tuck into their loincloths for each side?” Kendra spoke to Harper, watching the kids score.
“You think they need that? I think them just having fun is the goal. Turning it into a competition is another thing if you put real sides to it.” Harper mused, snorting as Ashley failed at dribbling before the ball was gone by a quicker teen.
It was remarkable, as Jake watched, to see how quickly the children had picked up the sport though his main gripe about it was the fact Kendra had introduced it as Football, not Soccer. She must have some Britishness to her to be calling it that. American football, he knew wouldn’t do well with the Na’vi; it was far more violent than kicking a ball around but still…. a good portion of humans here came from America. He would have thought they’d use the same names for shit to not confuse the Na’vi.
Kendra patted Harper’s arm, bending down to pick up her basket of tiny (relative to Na’vi) animal bones then headed his way.
“Did you live in England for a bit, by any chance?” He couldn’t help but ask as she passed.
Kendra paused, giving him an odd look. “What makes you say that?”
“You called it Football, not Soccer.” Jake pointed out, “We all know Soccer is the correct term.”
“The British invented its current form, so they have the right to call it football,” Kendra spoke, her eyes twinkling though her tone disapproving. “You Americans just changed British Rugby a little and slapped a new name on it by calling it football and got enough of your population to believe it.” She said.
Jake blew a raspberry. “It is better.”
“Well, given your version of the sport isn’t being played right now on this planet, I think it’s safe to say that Football is the correct term that the Na’vi can understand. Playing Ball with the feet.” She said with a victorious grin. “And yes, I was born in England. My grandparents moved out of Japan to the UK when my mother was seven after the 2100 Earthquake and Tsunami. It was rough but they made it work.”
Jake hummed, wincing a little but she just carried on to deliver the bones towards the far ring of weavers which had grown as young adults were putting together new clothes of near-complete works. As soon as the bones were delivered, there was a mild scramble for them to get a good look and to see if they were suitable. Many looked like they’d be going to rider’s flight visors or women’s shirts.
It was perhaps reflex that Jake dropped his spindle of thread as a shadow quickly appeared in his peripheral. His hands rose automatically before—
Bam!
“Fuck!” His hands stung painfully, the ball launching off elsewhere by rebound but at a lesser speed. His skin tingled and he could feel the crawling burn rise to the surface of his palms.
“Oh my god, Jake!” Harper’s voice was muffled by a few others.
He hissed a little, his palms turning redder and redder but his heart hammered out of sheer surprise of it but he sucked in a few calming breaths. An accident, it was just an accident. Fuck that it was him in its way though.
“Back off guys,” Nadine’s voice called, her presence appearing beside him, her cold limb coming to his wrist to check. “Let’s help him back to Mo’at. He’ll need something cold to reduce swelling.”
“I will help.”
Jake’s head turned up in surprise though the stinging to see Neytiri of all people appear from the depth of Hometree and then crouch next to him in concern.
“May I?”
“Okay.” He leaned into her, allowing her to scoop him up but… he found that he didn’t quite mind and it made his heart flutter. She was gentle but swift—also her necklaces barely covered her breasts which made him realise his elbow was no doubt digging into those wonderful parts of the female body. He debated for a moment if moving his arm was worth bringing it to attention or just ignore. Na’vi clothing had some rules but not as strict or as prude as humans. The body, especially female breasts wasn’t sexualised so… he reasoned that ignoring was the best course of action and keep his hands to himself. It was his elbow that was in contact given the type of hold she had him in.
Plus his hands fucking hurt. He didn’t need another injury and…lest not from inappropriate behaviour.
But, before he knew it, he was being set down on a mat where the den was empty of the resident Tsahìk who was no doubt attending elsewhere. It crossed his mind that Mo’at couldn’t spend all her days in the den but it was amusing for a second to think that. Like every human kid thinking that their teacher lived in the school.
“I will fetch water. Keep your hands elevated.” Neytiri said.
He nodded, keeping his hand sup though he didn’t wait long before she returned with a bowl of water and set it down in front of him. He sunk his burning hands into it, almost withdrawing it by the sharpness of the water but breathed through the discomforting throb. It was like his hands had little heartbeats.
But, it did feel a little better as the intensity of the burning began to recede, he swirled his hands in the basin for a moment and felt the flow of the water between his fingers.
“Feeling better?”
“Yes, thank you.” He sighed out heavily. “Just…a little surprised.”
“Hm, you have fast reflexes,” Neytiri remarked, eyeing the cups before she found the new ingredients of what she was looking for. “Especially reflecting something that you didn’t see coming.” If he didn’t know any better, he was sure she almost sounded impressed.
“I saw a shadow in the corner of my eye, I guess my marine reflexes kicked in.” He reasoned off casually.
“Still, its markings are of that of a warrior or a hunter.” She mused.
“Well, we haven’t started lessons yet. Can I start coming over in my avatar more often than every other if it’s for training days? I can’t train as a warrior in my human body and… I don’t think it’s effective training if it’s every other visit that I get trained.”
Neytiri eyes him for a moment, contemplating for a moment. “No, at least not at Hometree. I can suggest to my father that I will come on your days away from Hometree to continue your training.”
“You will need days of rest if you are to care for your human body.” Mo’at’s voice echoed, making them both jump.
Jake almost tipped the water out of the bowl, leaning up from his slouch and staring up at the Tsahìk in alarm. Neytiri simply jumped to her feet with her tail high and ears perked before they softened back.
“But, that is a good suggestion. You should talk to your camp about it as your absence or training may affect your chores required. Now, hands?” Mo’at requested.
Jake held his hands out, allowing her to examine.“I suppose. N’deh says I’m not ready to hunt, only fish, that I need to learn to See the world around me or to start Seeing.”
“Did he now?” Mo’at didn’t sound…disapproving, which often would be in someone’s tone for that question. “You do not see?”
“I don’t…know what that means,” Jake admitted. “No one’s explained it's...signficance to me. I think the others assumed I knew or knew enough at this point. Felt…kinda awkward to ask them.” It was like not getting someone’s name at a group when instructions happened but it was too deep into a conversation to stop and ask.
Mo’at glanced at Neytiri for a moment. “It is…not something that is strictly taught. It is felt. A connection to one another or as N’deh implied, a connection to life and Eywa herself. You do not believe in Eywa? Not her gifts around her? What she provide even for you?”
Jake refrained from shrinking under her sharp gaze. “Belief is...is a strong word. I do not…fully believe on the account of me…not seeing such proof in understandable qualities I can understand.” He said carefully, “Humans love proof of concepts to believe. I’m sure you know Grace and the scientist’s habits in that regard.”
Mo’at tipped her head. “I have…seen their difficulties in acceptance. But…I’ve come to realise with you sky people that…you hold onto proof far too tightly, you demand more proof despite evidence. The Dreamwalker couple of your camp have passed through the eye of Eywa and returned with new bodies. Is that not enough proof?”
Jake frowned curiously. Mulling her words over. There was no…denying the possibility but… he could feel that there was some part of him unconvinced. That there was some scientific reason for it.
“It’s a culture thing to deny like that.”
All three heads turned to see Ruby in the den entryway, her arm up and her hand bleeding. She looked a little sheepish having been overhearing but Neytiri moved first to offer a space to her and reached for her arm to examine.
“In what way?” Mo’at asked, “I fail to understand why sky people hold onto distrust, even here and for you, Jakesully to be out here for over a month.”
“It’s a culture thing, Mo’at,” Ruby said tightly. “You don’t know Earth. What daily life is like? Belief has to come with scepticism for survival. If a child comes to you for help, claiming that their mother or sibling is sick then that is either a child genuine or a child tasked to lure someone away to a bad fate. Happened to my second cousin once, they found his skeleton six months later under a bridge.”
“I’m sorry,” Jake said, sympathetically.
“You cannot trust at face value. Trust on Earth can kill.” Ruby sucked in a heavy breath, letting Neytiri wipe the blood. “That carried into other aspects of life in our culture. Someone might be playing around, making a joke or simply lying. If you believe that, then you’re considered a fool. Someone to be laughed at or ridiculed at.”
“It is linked back to your closed hearts, then,” Mo’at concluded from her words. “I am sorry for the loss of your family member. Truly.”
Ruby just nodded, “Thank you.”
Neytiri continued to tend to Ruby’s hand quietly, though a simple binding was used as the cut wasn’t too deep or long for stitches. Mo’at set Jake’s hands back into the water.
“I also think humans don’t like their beliefs challenged.” Jake mused, “It pushed us into denial very quickly and we get defensive.”
“Pride?” Ruby suggested.
“That too.” Jake wasn’t a fool to dismiss that motion. “Like…I get why the Na’vi believe. It’s their culture and I understand the concept that they can bond and connect and all but… humans don’t have that. We have no tswin. We have no foundation of which that belief can grow.”
“You need proof,” Neytiri said simply. “You need to see her around her, to hear her in the wind or to hear her voice in your ear…”
Mo’at spared a quiet moment of contemplation, her lips pursed tightly and her brow pulled in then spoke to Neytiri in Na’vi. Jake caught fragments but their words were quicker than he could translate. Ruby though looked to be following along, examining her bandage to look busy.
Mo’at didn’t look thrilled by a suggestion coming from Neytiri, though Jake for some reason held the Tsahìk’s gaze before something looked decided.
“We can…show you means of finding a connection with Eywa, but for now we do not know how to show sky people. With your Dreamwalkers, it is possible. If enough of you were convinced, would convincing the others be easier?”
Jake spared a glance to Ruby who frowned, uncertain but looking curious enough to not shy away.
“Possibly, but…how?” Ruby asked carefully.
“Tsaheylu. Nothing more. Your Dreamwalkers can bond with the Great Mother that your native bodies cannot. However, the sites are forbidden for outsiders….unless permission of either Tsahìk or Olo'eyktan is granted.” Neytiri spoke.
“You don’t look thrilled, Mo’at.” Ruby remarked, “You’re not for it?”
“I am protective of our sacred sites. It is the duty of Tsahìk to ensure the sanity of our ancestral sites.” Mo’at spoke. “It is not a…easy suggestion but it is one that makes sense and has plausibility to show you our belief.”
“Four Dreamwalkers, both myself and you. No one brings any equipment but their own Dreamwalker bodies.” Neytiri suggested. “They would not offend to bring unsanctioned items with them.”
“Do we…have to do this?” Ruby asked next.
“No, the choice is yours.”
Ruby relaxed a little. “I’ll…talk to Zane about it.” She got to her feet, pushing the long plat of hair off her lap then over her shoulder and padded out quickly.
Neytiri watched her leave before something clicked, her head tilting away though Jake was surprised she looked at him. “Have they been told of your blood demons yet?”
“No. I was gonna wait till morning to tell them. It’s…not gonna be easy.” Then he snorted, “You know, getting us to believe in Eywa is probably gonna be far easier than getting them to believe in vampires.”
Mo’at considered. “That may be, but both require the sky people to change their beliefs. I suppose you may understand our frustration at your disbelief.”
Jake hummed. That was…not an unfair statement. Accurate. He knew he was missing the pieces that can’t just be learned so simply. He flexed his fingers under the cool water, lifting them out as Neytiri gestured but she looked satisfied to see the redness was less intense.
He was soon cleared from the healing den but his usage of sore hand were to be kept to a minimum so Neytiri set him next to the fires to watch the cooks and Nadine work. She was happy to wheel him closer and help sort through fresh, live Teylu from the dead that would be returned to Eywa rather than be served to the people. Apparently, children picked many without seeing the harm of being too rough in their harvesting.
“Teylu is safe for humans,” Nadine said, “Rich in protein and apparently sweet as well, but they’re going to steam them with… some vegetables. I’m managing the ones for humans since they added a herb that’s not safe for humans into their Teylu’s food prior to being cooked. It adds to the flavour but I’d rather not be on the loo all night.”
Jake snorted, staring a little at the giant grub in his hands. Massive in his hands but…in the Na’vi they looked small. The Teylu were at least ten centimetres long and very fat, but seemed to be curled up and trying to search for its natural food, not realising it was going to be his dinner. It…was uneasy. He didn’t like the idea of eating bugs but…this was normal for the Na’vi. He was gonna have to grit his teeth and bear it.
“I’m going to wrap them in edible leaves. Lots of veg so the crunch will not be the teylu.” Nadine assured, clearly sensing his discomfort. “The flavour will make up for the texture.”
He hoped so.
-
The humans stuck together as dinner was handed out, not as close as Jake had been before to the fire, but more off to the left their smaller size made them feel puny sitting next to so many big people so, a group made sense. Jake was carried and sat between Morgan and Nadine.
Nadine was vague in her description of the food when Mingxia asked what it was when she started to eat. Neither Ruby nor Ashely seemed to add to it for clarification and both ate without questioning it; they knew what they were eating. Ruby with a little more upturned nose until she actually got to taste then her attitude lightened up.
Jake eyed his lead wrap for a moment, then took a solid breath and lifted his mask for the first bite.
The taste was…better than Jake expected and he didn’t let his intrusive thoughts go off and gross him out. The flavours were a mix between sweet and savoury with a surprising kick of spice that tingled at his palette. His stomach rumbled for more and he was handed a few more when his first was done.
“This is amazing. Thank you, Nad.”
Nadine smiled around her bite, “The other cooks are wonderful teachers. I might see about what other things we have that might work. Teylu don’t eat spice but they do marinade in it. It’s fascinating how they basically marinate it alive first by letting them consume selective herbs and then steaming them before full digestion.”
“Have you never had Teylu before?” Neytiri moved from her place to join behind him. “Not at your camp?”
Morgan hummed, shaking his head as an answer. “Jerome has a slight phobia with caterpillars or…insects with a similar form. Apparently when he was seven, his older sister pulled maggots out of a dead pigeon and put them in his bed because he stole her toy and refused to give it back. He can tolerate them now but he won’t eat them.”
“Plus, plenty of fish and meat with our small numbers. So we don’t need to rely on Teylu.” Jake reasoned, taking another bite after an inhale of safe breath.
Neytiri lent down, sniffing a little. “What did you put in that? It smells…different. Hotter.”
“Just some Capsaicin-based fruits,” Nadine said, much to Neytiri’s horror who lent away from his leaf wrap. “Gives it a nice kick.”
“You eat the burning plants?!”
“Yep,” Nadine gave the woman a grin, “Humans love spice, we’ve made Capsaicin-based sauces called hot sauce, and we’ve had wars over the spice trade because they’re so desired. It went global. Na’vi can’t eat Capsaicin like us. They can tolerate Menthol-based plants a little, like…their version of mint but nothing stronger.” Nadine added to the group. "I bet that some of our spices could probably kill a Na'vi but we'd be fine."
Neyriri eyed their Teylu rolls more wearily.
Ashley cocked her head. “You added capsaicin to mine too?” though she looked down thoughtfully but she looked very weary. “I…feel a kick but I’m not suffering.”
Nadine’s eyes widened for a moment, “Oh god, I forgot that the avatars—wait, you’re good? No burn-y-burn-y mouth? I definitely gave you the human version. I didn’t think….”
Ashley nodded, ears flicking as she took another test bite. “It…kinda tastes sharp, some heat but nothing that’s hurting or burning. It’s…normal. Could do with some more spice.”
“You still have human fragments in your avatar’s DNA. We may have a better tolerance for us in our other bodies.” Jake pointed out, though he felt a deep sense of relief. “Oh, that’s wonderful news. If we get more spicy plants, we can make our own hot sauce. I have pepper and chilli seeds in Tommy’s seed collection. I bet we could get a few seeds and get them growing. Add more to our variety. We could do camp trades.”
The group seemed to perk up at that.
“That…sounds like a good suggestion. Our areas are very remote to yours.” Harper said, eyeing the Teylu thoughtfully. “We have found a good few plants. We can take pictures and show them when we’re next here. Do you have a radio?”
“No,” Morgan said, “but I knew a few places we can get one. There are a few abandoned link shacks we can raid. I’ve seen a few there we can repurpose any of them.”
“Abandoned? How many?”
“We used a virus to wipe Hell’s Gate’s server of Link Shack locations. We should have free pickings.” Nadine said.
“Not entirely.” Ruby shook her head. “Dr Augustine had memorised a portion of the link shacks. The ones we stole were from the recovered list.”
“Which shacks? I can cross them off as potential targets.” Nadine mused.
“Site 7, which was the one you stole, Jake,” Ruby added to him.
Jake just grinned. A little victory of making the RDA pissed off at him was very good. Still, shame it was recovered so soon that they couldn’t struggle for longer on what he took.
“Then… Site twenty-six, thirty-two, Thirty-six, thirty-seven, forty-seven….sixteen and seventeen.” Ruby considered, counting on her fingers as she spoke. “We stole site thirty-six and thirty-seven’s modules and remote lab. Two other groups are stationed at Thirty-two and sixteen, so those are to be avoided. Dr Augustine’s favourite link shack is at Site 26 in the floating mountain.”
“Ooh, that’s a tempting site to go for. I bet that shack is kitted out with the best stuff.” Harper mused, “Head of SciOps, she probably has position perks to get what she wants in that. Last year, they refurbished it with plans of adding another few modules or a remote lab like what Ruby stole. It was put on hold after there was some sort of crash. Dr Augustine, Captain Hale and the pilot survived.”
Jake’s thrill of raiding link shacks dampened the more he heard. It was a tempting target and if Augustine wasn’t a vampire, he would have been one-hundred per cent down for raiding it and to annoy the fuck out of her by stealing all the good shit out of it for their needs; they’ll just get a replacement at the end of the day.
But… she was a vampire. A dangerous creature that… he wasn’t willing to put their neck into the noose, even if it was for their needs.
“You will leave Grace’s home as it is.” Neytiri spoke first, “It is quite the distance, after all, and high in the mountains. It would be in your best interest to avoid it as one would with a Palulukan den.” Her eyes fixed them with a heavy stare, one at a time to ensure each of them nodded. “Good. There is another metal home you are to avoid as it appears to be closeted to your home, Ruby….” Neytiri mentioned, directing this to the woman in question, going on to derive it and its appearance. Jake realised she was talking about the vampire home he had heard about. Another wise choice.
“In a few weeks’ time, we’ll have weed,” Nadine announced once they had settled into a lapse following Neytiri’s words.
“Bullshit.” Harper scoffed.
“Let’s not dismiss this so quickly, Trin.” Mingxia elbowed the soldier, “Go on, and please… for the love of god not be kidding.”
“Nope. Thanks to Jake’s dearly departed brother, we have the glorious seeds planted and growing as we speak. Far faster than anticipated but growing fast indeed. Jerome thinks the first batch will be in two weeks’ time.” Nadine said gleefully, though she reached to pat Jake’s arm softly.
“Add that to a trades list we have yet to get up,” Kendra said, her eyes alight. “It’s been so long since I hit a joint and it was shit. We need to see if there’s local flora that’ll work with it. Enhance the experience.”
“I can have a look.” Ashley said, “Tomorrow once we’re back.”
“I’ll help,” Mingxia added in.
Soon enough the people began to vanish away for their hammocks. Jerome and Kim seemed to vanish up as well with the rest of the people with a brief good night. The humans stayed around, waiting to see what arrangements could be made for them.
“Not all of the sky people are suited to hammocks.” Tsu’tey’s voice was questioning as he spoke to Eytukan, standing close to being heard. “Nor did we expect them all to spend the night.”
“Their size makes them suitable for a few to share a single hammock, they can pair up. Those who cannot have a hammock may simply rest in the healing den for ease of movement.” Eytukan decided,
“I guess, Nad and I are going in the healing den. You can put your arm and leg on charge.”
Nadine hummed, moving to find her bag that was hung up near the spire and pulled it off and carried it with her to the healing den. Ashely didn’t bother with the hammocks for some reason but Jake accepted her help up and allowed her to carry him up and set him onto a mat, avoiding Nadine pulling off her arm.
“Thank you,” he nodded to her. “No hammock?”
Ashley nodded at his thanks, as she pulled a mat from the side though shook her head at the question. “I’d rather stick to the floor for now. I don’t…want to leave my avatar there. Even if Kendra volunteered to small-spoon me.”
“Alright.” Jake adjusted his legs out on the mat and then lay back, making sure to test the seal on his mask was good. He was gonna wake up with rim marks, that was certain.
“Night.” Nadine yawned.
-
Grace should have expected the visit long before the two came to her quarters directly, although she had heard noise isolation headphones on, their steps were easy to identify when they crossed the 5-meter threshold and opened up her door without knocking as well but Grace didn’t look up from her datapad to greet them.
“You know, knocking in polite.” She reminded, reaching up to remove her headgear. “I could have had company or be in a far more awkward predicament.”
Mansk moved in, shutting the door after Walker. “Your attempt to get out of Site 26 has failed. Selfridge has reconsidered his options. He wants you there in two weeks maximum.”
Grace groaned. “Asshole.”
“We could steal the modules and set them up with 43’s RoLab we have hidden away. That way, they can’t put you there.” Walker suggested. “That’s the simplest option. It could be blamed on the people who took off on us.”
“There are at least six spare modules in Hell’s Gate mass storage bay. They’ll just bring them with them if the original modules are gone.” Mansk answered. “We can brainstorm ideas but let’s just tackle the fact that your food situation is our first priority, even for a few days.”
“Trudy will be the pilot, I’m assuming.” Grace sucked on her teeth for a moment. It wasn’t a bad choice; she did like Trudy. “but…it can’t be more than one vampire going out there with me. I can’t feed on the humans I have as well; that’ll draw up more suspicion and I won’t have as much access to drugs to up their blood count in the meantime.”
“We can stop using blood bags ourselves unless we have to, there’s a supply run every week the pilots would do. We can send the bags through her to you or you’ll have to run back to Hell’s Gate to eat, the latter not ideal.” Mansk decided, coming to lean against the door.
“We could decorate the bags with opaque medical covering. Make it look like dietary supplements that you need.” Walker added. “No one would think about it. If the humans of your group ask and wonder then you have a plausible reason.”
“I can last three days without feeding but I’d need two bags to satisfy for another three days. That’s if I don’t expand my energy with my abilities.” She could do the math easily to see it would be quite the stretch on their supply and more so on the long-term side of things. “If I have to, I’ll get back to Hell’s Gate. I can convince the humans to not question if they notice.”
“Who will you have with you?”
“Norm Spellman. He’s a new face as well which may help the cause. I could have a second researcher but… with him and the pilot, that’s less eyes on me. I can cover enough with another driver beside myself.” She did consider a few faces to join. One bright and idealistic soul was Bibi Levson but she wasn’t yet due here for a few months on the next resupply but she had heard good things of the woman’s work. Also rumours the woman was easily excitable about Pandoran plants but also, she may have a fangirl which would be awkward as hell so she’d need to get the girl saturated with work and less about her.
“Two humans. Good.” Mansk scratched his jaw thoughtfully.
“I’ll talk to Shen about getting the ‘suppliants’ logged into the standard request rather than it being flagged as contraband. Dr Solis can get the packs ready. You can bulk-take some in advance as well.” Walker mused.
“I’ll start getting the staff prepped tomorrow.” Things hopefully should be ready and stable by the time she’d have to go. She still wanted to talk to Hale about getting her memories back but, she could another time.
She waved the two out of her room, reaching for her headphones. “If you’ll excuse me, I’ve got work to do.”
-
Of course, the peace didn’t last for more than ten minutes before there was a flutter of steps at her door but it was the little heartbeat of the baby that stopped Grace from dismissing whoever it was from interrupting her again.
“It’s open.” She called, though she smiled a little at the sight of the sleeping baby as Paz came in though her expression fell as Paz looked worried. “Everything okay?” Grace set her headset back off to the side.
“His more vampire side is starting to become more obvious,” Paz said, coming to sit straight on Grace’s bed to better support her child. “He’s teething and… I think they’re sharp teeth. Not blunt human teeth.”
Grace’s eyes flickered down to the infant, her eyebrows pulling in before she leaned forward. “Which makes feeding him a lot harder too.”
Paz’z hand came to her breasts. “Yep, I am well aware.”
“He can’t be on your milk forever. His diet… may be more human than ours but… he won’t suit for fruit or veg if his teeth are sharp.” A meat eater, most likely seemed the next logical conclusion that made sense for his biology. His body would need more than blood.
“I was thinking that but… where are we to get his food without questions? People will wonder why he won’t eat fruit. Hell, if anyone sees him licking some bloody meat, they’re gonna be concerned.”
“Humans can eat Hexepede meat, maybe we could get him onto Pandoran meat?” Grace suggested.
“We can’t consume Pandoran blood, Grace. I doubt he’ll be able to stomach it.” Paz stroked her son’s hair cautiously.
Grace sighed but Paz wasn’t incorrect. It wasn’t for the lack of trying but for some reason, they couldn’t keep animal blood from the wildlife down. She had tried, Mansk had tried when he first turned and even Choi had tried. It was weird, the blood was more or less the same in iron-based composition, with the same necessary proteins and nutrients but…they just couldn’t keep it down.
“He still has his human side, that’s still vastly more prominent.” Grace tried, “We should at least try. If not, we can rethink on blood redistribution with me. Soak what meat the mess has in blood and let him have that.”
Paz wrinkled her nose but nodded. “I suppose. But…his breathing is also different. The gaps between his breaths are longer now. I… I think he’s becoming less dependent on oxygen, or at least is more tolerant of lower oxygen levels.”
“His fingers not changed colour?”
“No, his heart is normal, skin nice and pink.” Paz tugged a little hand into view, Mile’s little hands coming to clench around her index finger.
“Tomorrow night, have Solis take a look at his lungs. Medical scanners may show something. If his lungs are different, we should see if he’s able to breathe Pandoran air—not actually test it!” she added at the alarmed expression on Paz’s face. “I mean a simple biopsy should reveal. We won’t hurt him but…if he’s caught out; you’re caught out, you need to know if he’s safe to leave at a moment’s notice. A mask won’t fit him until he’s about six unless you hand-make him masks.” She clarified.
Paz’s expression didn’t waver, looking down at the baby in concern. “I can’t leave him with my human friends when his teeth erupt. His bites will be less than amusing. He won’t understand…”
“I can’t be around as much but… Maze or the other scientists would be at your disposal.” She didn’t trust Shen or Hendrick within ten paces of a baby, she cared little about Mansk or Walker on their childcare expertise. Hale would be another option but the woman was the new MineOps head. Less time on her hands.
“If I could join you at Site 26…”
Grace moved from her desk to sit beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Right now, I can’t be sure that’s a good idea. I need to know how one vampire works remotely with a small supply drop. Another with a half-human…might be too much.” She couldn’t say no, but she couldn’t say yes either.
Paz slouched a little, shifting Miles to rest against her shoulder. “I’m just…worried. If his vampire abilities kick in early…he could start climbing the walls…or morph or…something.”
“If he’s babysat with a vampire, then we’ll stop him from doing anything in the company of humans,” Grace assured.
“Okay… but can you look after him now? I need to eat.”
Grace opened her arms for the near-five-month-old. “Of course.” She wouldn’t say no to this. He was deep asleep and a comforting weight of warmth. She had fed a little earlier, so she was good for now.
-
Jake woke groggily the next morning, his mouth feeling dry and a weight on his stomach. The rim of his mask dug straight in to the side of his face which promised a lingering ache. It took a moment to fully wake up, blinking to see Nadine was using his stomach as a pillow and had somehow wiggled across the den floor to her current position without her other arm or leg still.
Jake tapped on the front of her mask to wake her.
“No.” She grumbled.
“You’re on me. Get off.” He grumbled.
“Comfy.”
“I’m not.” He tapped on her mask until she got annoyed enough to sit up and flash him a middle finger then slunked across the den to retrieve her limbs.
Jake tested his neck, feeling the relieving cracks as the pressure changed then waited.
Tsu’tey was the first to come in. His eyes remained to the still avatar on the mat. “We’ve got Pa’li ready to take you back to your camp, Jakesully. Ikran will take the other camps back.”
“Have they left yet?” Jake asked.
“No, but they’re preparing to. One team is waiting for the Dreamwalker to stir first.”
Jake nodded, “I need to talk to all of them before they leave. They don’t know about vampires. They should be told.”
Tsu’tey’s head tilted. “They are eager to return. You do not have a lot of time, and Neytiri mentioned it would be hard for them to believe you.”
Jake considered his words for a moment. “Would you help me? They know that you are a serious and fierce warrior and unlikely to joke and… well you’ve seen two vampires yourself.”
Tsu’tey’s expression turned somewhat into a frown but he reflected his words. “I can if it’s required.”
“Thank you.”
-
Getting the hungry and tired groups together took longer than Jake planned, and they sat waiting in a ring near the spiral for the last of the dregs to arrive. Jake sat in his chair, Tsu’tey standing tall beside him as they waited.
“What’s this about, Jake?” Harper yawned, “I wanna go home.”
“I’ve got something to say and…it’s…kinda important for the long-term knowledge.” Jake started, “it…sort of needs an open mind from all of you.”
There was a non-committed, tired confirmation from them as a whole.
“So, Kim and Jerome know about this,” Jake started, seeing the realising cross over the two avatars quickly before Kim rolled her eyes in exasperation, Jerome just…stood there awkwardly. “They don’t really believe and I’m not asking you to believe me either but…as a culture, we’ve been led to believe that myths and stories are just fictional and that…some things don’t exist when…they do.” He started, “So, I will say this thing is real because on Earth I saw shit in the war that validated this thing’s existence, Morgan himself got attacked in Hell’s Gate about it and I’ve seen all evidence on a few people.”
“What is going on here?” Eytukan appeared, eyeing their overly large group forming up. “Is there a problem to be resolved? You are due to return back to your camps, are you not?”
“They are, Eytukan. But Jake is simply informing the new sky people about the blood demons that live in the sky people's village before they go.” Tsu’tey spoke suddenly.
Eytukan nodded softly in understanding. “Now?”
“Blood demon?” Mingxia cocked her head, her voice more of a whisper as she proposed the question to her group. “What the fuck is that?”
“Your people call them Vampires,” Tsu’tey answered as if it was obvious.
The looks of disbelief were immediate, making Jake groan internally at their blatant dismissive nature. Though Jake noted a little of how Ashley’s ears pinned back uncertainly though Kendra’s face lost all colour and tensed up.
Eytukan looked a little surprised at their reaction then seemed to snort in amusement. “Interesting, you do not believe so easily?”
Tsu’tey shorted a little. “<Morons.>”
Jake gave Tsu’tey a soft look, understanding enough to know what he said.
“Jake, please tell me you didn’t convince these people that they actually exist,” Harper sighed. “Vampires are fictional.”
Ashely made an odd noise in the back of her throat, coming to fiddle the end of her tail in her blue fingers. “Not…well, I wouldn’t dismiss it.”
Harper and a few others looked to their camp mate in surprise, “Wait, you believe him?”
Ashely’s ears turned pink, “Look… I saw a few weird things with no context and… I do. Kinda.”
“What weird thing?” Eytukan asked before any of the others could talk her down. “I am interested to know how these beings are living among your kind so silently and with little notice.”
Ashely dropped her tail. “Well, the main thing I sorta remember was…after I got stabbed. I was found by a pilot, Socorro. I was a little out of it but…she got Dr Augustine to help. They must have thought I was too out of it to remember. The pilot’s eyes were like…a black. She used to have brown eyes yet they like…blacked out.” She said, her tail swishing anxiously.
“Entirely or just the iris?” Jake asked.
“Just the iris.” Ashly said, “But… I mostly remember how cold their hand were. Augustine had to hold my neck to keep the blade from slippin’, you see. There might have been some hissing, I think I may have seen some sharp teeth but… I can’t fully recall the details. I didn’t know what I was seeing.”
“You were bleeding out, hallucinations aren’t uncommon.” Harper pointed out dryly.
“What would make you believe?” Jake asked, “Like, Morgan’s got a few bites. I’m sure he can show it to you for proof.”
Morgan squirmed a little to be in the limelight of the uncertain gaze.
“I have seen them myself. You would not call me a liar now, would you?” Tsu’tey spoke.
There was no comment, but uncertainly and some natural disbelief remained in a few of their eyes.
“Wait, I have an idea…” Kendra stood up and pulled a torch from her belt, one of three she had then stepped around the group towards the former soldier. “Where?”
“What are you doing?” Morgan asked wearily, eyeing the torch
“Looking for proof, now show me, boy.” She asked, though a little impatient.
Morgan glowered but nonetheless shrugged off his vest and leaned his head to the side. It took a second to see before they noticed the reflection across the skin in how the light caught the scars. The bites seemed to reflect almost silvery against Morgan’s dark skin, the one along his neck and shoulder were more prominent of course but…Jake realised that it wasn’t just two scars that lined his skin. If you didn’t include the bite set (like top and lower jaw), then there were at least seven more marks that lingered as she shone the light further across and checked the other side of his neck and shoulders.
“Oh…fuck.” Ashley winced, a little taken back, “Okay, yep that’s nasty.”
“Guys?” Morgan looked worried, “How many times was I bitten? What do you see?”
“A few,” Jake said tightly, glad that one of the others in the group had shut up and looked far more seriously.
Both Tsu’tey and Eytukan watched with a more weary eye.
“They must be venomous, and from…my assumption since I found this out last week, is that the venom contains a fluorescent molecule that lingers in human flesh. Humans have things in our own biology that glow under black light like saliva or blood, so not foreign enough that our bodies don’t break it down. The skin scars have been healed but…the scars of their bites are otherwise still present, even if we can’t see them.” Kendra summarised, though to prove her point, she turned the light to her own neck which showed a horrifying litter of bite marks that disappeared down clothes.
No one was laughing. No one was dismissive. Just shocked silence as Kendra shone the light onto Harper next who squeaked as at learning least three bites were on her neck, one on her left forearm close to her elbow.
“What is that light?” Eytukan asked, following along as Kendra continued to check everyone over.
“Blacklight. Like Na’vi, there’s a visual spectrum of light that we can and cannot see. UV light is a light a little out of our visual spectrum though your people would see it more clearly than us. If we lit a room with UV light or this version of UVA; the black light, the room would look dark to us. UV light can be reflective off certain things. Biological things can…reflect into our visual spectrum when in contact with UV light. Blood, saliva…other bodily fluids than show up in this light as well.” Kendra explained to the chief.
“Oh, come on!” Nadine groaned as a few marks shone up on her flesh arm and shoulder “Me?!”
Jake leant into the light when she got to him with it, allowing her to check his neck and arms though she had to double-check before she answered, “You’re clear. No bites.”
“Oh, good.” Jake felt a swell of relief; he hadn’t been someone’s snack, ever. What a relief. Still, he could pity the others a little. That was one nasty wake-up call to the reality of their monsters.
“Hey, why’s he clear and we’re not?” Nadine asked, looking a little offended.
“To be fair, he has—relatively speaking— just arrived at Pandora” Morgan pointed out, thumbing grumpily over an invisible scar. “Piped up on cryo drugs no doubt, no one wants a snack from that. You’ve been in Hell’s Gate for years. ”
“Lucky ass.” One of the group complained.
“So, I hope that’s enough proof to believe me,” Jake said, glad for one for this discovery; that should shed away disbelief in case anyone else came. “Right now—“
“Oh, what the fuc—What is that!”
Heads turned to see Zane under the light and while he too wasn’t spared the bites, it was the skeletal hand on the back of his flesh one that threw Kendra off.
“It’s okay! It’s okay! It’s my tattoo!” Zane laughed, “It’s a UV Tattoo. It only shows up under UV light.”
“Why didn’t you mention it before?! You freaked me out!”
“I forgot! I can’t see it and I’ve been busy!”
Jake sniggered a little, the tension easing a little. “As I was saying, it’s a lot to process so let’s take today to process this. You can ask questions when we next meet up. But… this is something you need to be aware of. We don’t know how long they’ve been in Hell’s Gate for but we know that they’re using secrecy to keep the peace and eat undisturbed. We don’t want that secret to be spilled—”
“We don’t?!” Harper scoffed, shaking her head. “
“If Hell’s Gate finds out, then the vampires can leave then we’re on the menu. We’re not so protected. The Na’vi cannot protect us against these creatures. So, if you have garlic cloves in your supplies, get them growing then we can trade with them.”
“We have some garlic, and some other root veg” Ruby spoke, “I hate working with garlic. So much fucking paperwork to get into the damn cloves.” She mimed the peeling process with distaste as she got to her feet, tugging Zane up to his feet.
With a dismissing word from Eytukan, the group got up and began to disperse to their rides home.
“Thank you,” Jake added to Tsu’tey mostly.
Tsu’tey’s head nose, curtly nodding. “You are welcome, Jakesully.”

your heart is the target // jay
The last thing Jay expected when striking a fake dating deal with you was to get jealous (and ultimately, to fall head over heels for you).
➳ Characters: rich business student!Jay x professional archer!female reader/you
➳ Genre: fake dating au, high society au, olympics au, fluff, comedy
➳ Words: 5.5k
➳ Warning: mentions of food & drinks; vocab related to archery such as the usage of the words 'shooting' 'aim' and 'target'; my knowledge regarding archery comes from watching the Olympics, online research and this archery glossary, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! Jay is big time jealous in the first scene and big time in denial in the third one, so excuse him, he's just hiding his big heart!
➳ A/N: This story was heavily inspired by the Olympics, ISAC, 'Brought the heat back' aka the perfect jealousy song and this short on Youtube.
It's also a spin-off to 'how to cross the line?' with Jake and 'red light, green light' with Sunghoon which both take place before this one, but this story can absolutely be read on its own. ❤️
Apparently, Jay didn’t think through what kind of consequences the fake dating would bring about, and how he would react to them. To be precise, to boys around you.
But it did save him time, money, and let’s be honest, mental energy to not spend so much of his time going on blind dates his mother used to send him off to. Even though he would have plenty of time to meet girls at university, most of them only talked to him because he was 1) a rugby player for the college team 2) he had a lot of money and 3) he was handsome. He wanted more than that, but he didn’t seem to have too much luck, and it didn’t help that both of his university friends - Jake and Sunghoon - already had girlfriends, so whenever they spent time together, he felt like he was fifth wheeling.
So really, it was a sensible deal between you and him, even more so because you were a professional archer, training for the Olympics, so you had even less time to focus on dating than he did. So realising that both of you were fed up with the unfruitful blind dates you had to attend when you two had been set up, you had struck a deal. You would pretend to date for the sake of your families and yourselves, but if either of you found someone they actually liked in the meantime, you would call it off. Otherwise, you could take advantage of the other as a plus one at events, further minimising the chances of shallow-minded boys or girls coming up to you two in hopes of seducing you.
However, sitting through the opening ceremony of a music hall that Jay’s parents built where most people knew who you were wasn’t the same as accompanying you to your birthday party where all kinds of boys showed up he hadn’t seen before. Even the sight of them around you angered him, but the way they mistook him for someone else was truly dancing on his nerves.
At first, there was this tall, broad-shouldered boy who seemed younger than him, but multiple heads turned his way when he walked by, probably because of his handsome looks. Though Jay would never think of growing his hair long, he had to admit that he had a majestic feel to him because of his shoulder-length chestnut brown locks.
“Oh, noona!” The boy hollered when he caught sight of you, and Jay immediately stiffened beside you, but didn’t move when the other boy halted in front of you. As if he didn’t even see Jay, he boasted a wide grin as he handed you a gift box. “Happy birthday!”
“Thank you so much, Leehan! I’m glad you could make it,” you reciprocated his wide smile, visibly comfortable even with the close proximity of the boy. Or maybe it seemed close only because Jay was also by your side.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Though we had a bit of an emergency because Jaehyun managed to spill coffee on my suit, but alas, I look dazzling in any suit,” he blabbered joyfully, and only after you asked a few more questions about his day and silence settled on you three, did the boy turn his head towards Jay.
“Oh, you didn’t tell me that you had a bodyguard,” he noted with curiously widening eyes, and Jay’s eyebrows immediately shot up.
“Pardon?”
“Who are you then if not her bodyguard? You look so serious,” he pointed out, shrugging his shoulders casually. Jay felt like he could combust from both the embarrassment and the fury he felt, but held himself back because he was better than that. Besides, he might have stood too stiff beside you, but every approaching boy was a target in his eyes.
“Oh yeah, Leehan, I didn’t tell you. He’s my boyfriend, Jay. Jay Park.”
Leehan let out a little giggle before mentioning that it was funny that he had the same name as the singer. It wasn’t the first time he heard it, but it didn’t seem to get old no matter how much he hated it. It was just a name after all. It was like joking to every Kitty about Hello Kitty.
“Leehan and I used to be neighbours when I was living in Busan,” you explained as you turned towards him, and despite the fact that he didn’t even know you used to live in Busan, he appreciated the fact that you shared it with him. The explanation soothed his nerves a bit, but he was relieved only when Leehan left to say hello to your parents.
It was crazy, he was crazy, Jay thought to himself. He wasn’t usually like this. In fact, he was never like this. You weren’t even his real girlfriend, yet he was acting like a real jealous boyfriend. Did he even have the right to act this way? After all, Leehan was right. He was standing there beside you like a stuck up person, waiting to judge the next person that came up to you.
You took note of his behaviour as well, and asked if he was alright.
“Why wouldn’t I be fine?” Jay sulked like a little kid, hoping that the tone of voice was as close to neutral as possible, but judged by the way you let out a resigned sigh, he had a feeling that he wasn’t very convincing.
“I’m sorry that I dragged you into this. Maybe it was a bit too soon to have you here today,” you mused out loud, biting on your lower lip as you looked around, at the hustle-bustle of the guests. He knew exactly what you meant by ‘too soon’; a month into your fake dating deal, but it was what he had signed up for, so it wasn’t your fault, and he didn’t get why you felt this way.
“I’m fine, really. I just hardly know anyone, and it seems that people think I’m either your brother or your bodyguard, not your boyfriend.”
Your lips curled upwards when he mentioned this, referring both to Leehan’s bravado and Mark’s who was a childhood friend of yours, but went to the States to study, and totally forgot how your brother looked, and mistook Jay for your brother, Heeseung. In Mark’s defence, he supposedly had not only horrible eyesight but a poor face memory, too.
Coming to think of it, these were pretty amusing conversations, but Jay didn’t feel like laughing even though the bell-like sound of your laughter did awaken something inside of him. He didn’t have a lot of time to ponder what this unfamiliar feeling was though because the next guest came up to you, and you immediately welcomed him with a tight hug.
A hug.
From a boy he didn’t know.
What on Earth was going on? Why did you know so many people? Why did you know so many boys? He met like six of your acquaintances who were boys, and there was only one girl. Just why?
“... and this is Jay,” he faintly heard your voice, and when you called his name, he perked up, looking at you. He was so lost in thought that he barely registered that you and the jet-black haired boy had already started talking. He seemed kind with his big brown eyes and lips that curled naturally into a genuine smile, and even his tone was friendly when he spoke up.
“Your boyfriend, Jay, right?” He asked in a casual, conversational way as he reached his hand out for a handshake.
Now, this boy… he was a keeper. Jay liked him.
“Yes, that’s me,” Jay greeted him with a relieved sigh and shook his hand. He had a firm grip, but his kind smile wouldn’t have made him think so.
“My name is Sung Hanbin. We are archery partners with Y/N,” he explained after he let go of his hand, and now Jay didn’t know what to say. Seeing his confused face, you rushed to explain that you and Hanbin were training together as a mixed team for the Olympics.
“I thought that only same sex teams were competing.”
“There are actually 3 different archery categories. Individual, team and mixed team. We’re in the mixed team with Hanbin. It’s only us two, it’s not like fencing when there could be 4 people in a team,” you answered him in detail, and you were patient with him even though he had no idea about archery as a sport, let alone how the Olympics worked. On the other hand, he would definitely look things up after this because he didn’t want to embarrass himself like he did so.
Not like Hanbin seemed bothered by his lack of knowledge regarding the field. Instead, he asked about his side, and was super eager to learn about all the business things Jay studied at university. He was even more curious when he got to know that Jay did rugby, and asked him to show him some moves one day, he would be looking forward to it.
“You should also come to one of our practices. Y/N is seriously so amazing on the field,” Hanbin suggested, awe lacing his words. There was something in the way he said it, but he wouldn’t think that it was because Hanbin harboured feelings for you. It seemed more like respect than infatuation.
“Ah please, I’m just…”
“I’ll make sure to come by. If you don’t mind,” Jay made up his mind about it quickly, and searched for your eyes. This was the first time you wouldn’t bring the other as a plus one to an event, you would do it simply because you wanted to. It could be seen that you were taken aback by the suggestion, but you composed your features within mere seconds, and directed a smile at him.
“Sure. I’d love that.”
There was a moment when you just gazed at each other, and he forgot about everything else around you. He simply focused on the way the shiny peach-coloured lipstick sat on your lips as they curled into a smile, and the way the lights from the grand chandelier above reflected in your ocean deep eyes. The way the foundation couldn’t hide your beautiful moles, and the way you radiated confidence and chicness in your feminine pink and white body suit.
“Okay, I’ll leave you two lovebirds to have some time to yourself. I might check out the drinks instead,” Hanbin announced, pulling you two back to reality. A hue of pink crept onto your cheeks at the reminder that you were not alone, but your smile didn’t waver as you bid your archery partner goodbye.
“I’ve also brought you a gift, but I left at the table where I saw people leaving them,” Jay announced when he looked down at the gift boxes in your hand. You thanked him, and told him that you would definitely check it out and let him know what you thought about his gift.
Not like you had a lot of time to open gifts because your birthday party was more than packed with conversations with familiar and not so familiar figures, and by the end of the night, Jay had no idea how you still had the energy to greet everyone as energetically as in the beginning. Thankfully, there were no more people who assumed that he was your brother or bodyguard, but some found it surprising to see you as a couple. Like the ever so talkative Keeho who analysed the future of your relationship based on your music taste, MBTI and star sign (whatever he meant by that), or one of your mother’s friend’s daughters - Giselle - who was convinced that Jay was Hanbin because she thought that you were dating your archery partner because that would be so YA book-like.
Nevertheless, Jay truly hoped that after this night, everyone would know that you two were dating, so he wouldn’t have to go through this again. He wasn’t sure he could take that.
You didn’t know what got into Jay when he gave in to Hanbin’s suggestion because he was usually reserved when it came to such events. You would think that he didn’t want to bother with it since he hated blind dates just as much as you did, and you weren’t even dating for real, so it could have been just another nuisance in his eyes.
Nevertheless, he didn’t go back on his word, but asked when he could come by, and so you settled on a date. He made sure to ask if you were comfortable by the idea of him coming to your practice, but you reassured him that you were totally fine with it. Even though you didn’t interact that much in person, you rather texted the other, your impression of him was quite positive. He was a just person, someone who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, but he was also very attentive, noticing when the screw of your earring let go and fixing it for you at the business event you had attended, or how he had gone around to find a blanket for you when you had been sitting outside in the garden at your birthday party. Even his gift was thoughtful: he bought an Avalon archery bag for you which was a good quality bag for professional athletes. You were in need of a new one anyway, so you brought it with you to practise ever since, something that Hanbin couldn’t not notice.
Ever since the two boys had met at your birthday party, Hanbin had been asking about how you had met and whether it was difficult to keep up a relationship with your training schedule and Jay’s university classes. To be honest, you didn’t decide on such details with Jay, so you spoke the truth, and told him that you had met on a blind date, and you had made it work through texts and calls because you wanted to. Which was actually true because you and Jay were getting to know each other, and sometimes it felt like it wasn’t just for the sake of the fake dating deal, but because you really did want to know more about the other. At least, you wanted to know more about him.
The indoor archery range had a security system in place, so only the athletes and the staff could enter who had a card to use the building, so you went out to let Jay inside when he texted you that he arrived. You inquired if he found it easy to get here, and he said that it was fine, and he found a decent parking place not far, so it was alright. Because of course, he knew how to drive and he had his own car. Jay was every girl’s dream after all, no wonder that title followed him around like second skin.
“So it’s just you practising today, or will there be others?”
“We’ve booked a range for us, so it’ll be me, Hanbin and our two coaches. I let the coaches know that we would have a visitor, but it’s alright. A lot of archers visit each other’s practice to learn about techniques, so you won’t stand out too much. Or maybe just a bit,” you pointed at his sleek black cotton pants, dress shoes and white shirt that he tucked into his pants, highlighting his slender waist.
Jay seemed a tad bit coy at your playful call-out, his lips slightly puckering as he looked down at his - probably usual - attire, but he went back to his usual self immediately.
“I hope I won’t be too distracting,” he mentioned with an unbothered look, but you couldn’t help but nudge him in the side.
“What was that? Were you flirting with me?”
“I-” He was about to protest, probably not thinking too much into his words, but then, it dawned on him why you teased him. “I’m your boyfriend after all, aren’t I?” He shrugged nonchalantly, but you could see a hint of amusement prompting his lips to curl upwards.
No matter how many times you said the words ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’ out loud, it still seemed unfamiliar. Yet, there was a certain thrill to it too, something that you had never experienced before. Not since you had broken up with your boyfriend of three months in high school, at least.
After pulling yourself together, you guided Jay to the right room, and told him that he could sit in the spectators’ stand, you also put your bag there. So he took a seat in the front row beside your bag after greeting the ones who were present. Hanbin gave you a knowing look before he turned towards his coach who gave him some instructions. After warming up, you attached the quiver to your waist, and you held up the bow, testing the limbs and the hand. That’s when you realised that you had left a part of it in your bag, so you jogged up to the slightly confused Jay.
“Could you pass me the kisser from my bag?”
“The what?” The boy’s eyebrows shot up so high, you were afraid that his eyes would pop. That’s when you realised that you had used the jargon that he wasn’t familiar with.
“It’s this little black button in the right pocket of my bag,” you explained to him while you leaned onto the rail separating you two. Jay’s shoulders sagged in relief, and you found it difficult to hold back your laughter seeing his bewildered expression. Well yeah, the button was called kisser because it was attached to the bowstring, and your lips usually touched this part when aiming, to give consistent vertical reference. But he must have thought of something else.
Either way, Jay found the button, and handed it to you which you accepted with a grateful smile. Your fingers lightly grazed his hand in the meantime, and you felt heat rushing to your cheeks. No matter how many accidental touches you shared, it was still unfamiliar to you, the effect he had on you.
“Are you sure you will be able to concentrate with him here?” Hanbin teased once you jogged back to him, and you gave him a long stare.
“It’s not like it wasn’t your idea to invite him here.”
“Well, let’s just say I knew what I was doing,” he shrugged, a teasing little grin stretching on his lips. You nudged his shoulder in return and told him to focus on hitting the gold target face.
Despite Hanbin’s warning, the practice went well. What’s more, it went exceptionally well. You both scored high, and even if you didn’t perform that well in a set, you made up for it in the next one. One thing about mixed archery that you liked was that you could cheer on your partner without fearing for your own ranking, and it was easy to shoot beside Hanbin because he was very supportive, and even if he took archery seriously, he knew when to be silly to ease the tension. He was determined and hard-working just like you, and your coaches often said that you seemed like you were made to be each other’s partners.
Once your coaches left and it was nearing the end of your time slot, Hanbin inquired from Jay if he wanted to try it out himself. He objected vehemently, saying that after your practice, he didn’t want to embarrass himself. You didn’t force him either, but thanked him for coming by.
“I will give you a lift,” he offered gently when you walked up to him to get your bag.
“You really don’t have to. It might take about half an hour before I will get ready.”
“It’s alright. I don’t have other plans,” he protested firmly, and you didn’t have the heart to go against him when he offered it himself. He really wouldn’t say it out loud, but you had a feeling that he was offering to give you a ride because it was getting dark outside, and he didn’t want you to go home alone.
“Thanks. I will be quick,” you promised beamingly, and off you went.
After taking a quick shower, getting changed and putting your hair up into a high ponytail, you were fresh and clean, ready to head out. Jay was standing on the other side of the security gate, leaning against the wall while scrolling through his phone. You had a feeling someone let him out - maybe the security guard or Hanbin because he always finished earlier than you -, but still, it was nice to see him standing there even though he really did stand out in his business outfit while you had sweatpants and a knitted sweater on.
Jay’s nonchalant expression turned lighter when he caught sight of you, and he immediately reached for your bag, holding it for you without saying a word. Your face flushed when your hands touched again, but you looked the other way to hide your embarrassment.
You let silence fall over the two of you as you were walking towards his car, and when you stepped inside the vehicle, you felt like you were the one who stood out in your casual, sporty outfit. Alas, you preferred comfort over style when you were off to practise or coming from practise, and you were thankful that you didn’t need to wear high heels or dresses during these times. Plus, it’s not like Jay made a comment on it, instead, he inquired if the temperature was alright in the car, and if you preferred to have the radio on or not.
“So how did you like the practice? I hope it wasn’t too boring,” you inquired when the boy started the engine and drove out from the parking lot.
“It wasn’t boring at all. I didn’t know the distance for archery is 70 metres, so I was impressed that you could control the arrow from such a distance.”
“How did you know it was 70 metres?”
Jay’s Adam’s apple bobbed hearing your question as if he didn’t want to acknowledge that he clearly made his research. You definitely didn’t tell him about that.
“Well, I read it somewhere before,” he mumbled under his nose, but you couldn’t help this warm, embracing feeling bubbling up inside of you. He might have looked cold and composed, but you seemed to shake up his demeanour lately.
You talked a bit more about archery during the car ride because he was curious about the type of arrows you used, how you controlled the draw length and the aim, and whether you enjoyed individual, team or mixed archery the most. You found it heart-warming that he asked you about this because archery meant so much to you, but when you went to high society events with your parents, oftentimes the people there only asked about whether you had a boyfriend and when you would join your father’s company. Your parents never forced you to choose a different path, but these kinds of interactions came with the type of life they had chosen for themselves when you moved from Busan to Seoul, and your father set up his company that has since become one of the most important AI consulting companies in not just Seoul but the whole country.
Time passed by in a blink of an eye while you were talking, and you found yourself at home in no time. Yet, as his car drove out of your driveway, you realised that you wouldn’t mind if he gave you a ride back home more often.
Bit by bit, you and Jay got closer, and there was no denying it anymore. He went to your practices a few more times, you showed up at business events beside him other times, and in the meantime, you continued texting and calling each other. Jay also made it a habit to pick you up after practice when he didn’t have anything else to do, and sometimes Hanbin joined you, too. Jay liked him because he could see that he was a genuine, kind guy who would want nothing bad for you, and your archery partner also gave him his phone number, so Jay could reach out to him in case you didn’t pick up your phone or anything like that. Which was really attentive of him, and despite not saying it out loud, Jay grew fond of the other boy, too.
Alas, his fondness towards you could not be contained that easily, and it didn’t take long for his friends to pick up on his antics. Jake and Sunghoon teased him ever since Jay admitted that he “wasn’t feeling neutral towards you” which, in his dictionary, meant that he liked you, and they kept bombarding him with dating advice. He would never force you to date him though, and you had enough on your plate with the Olympics coming up, so he didn’t want to complicate things even further.
However, it didn’t mean that he couldn’t be supportive of you and your dreams.
“So… are you going to the Olympics with Y/N?” Jake inquired once when they were having lunch together between classes. Jay almost choked on his food, he was so surprised.
“Why would I go with her to the Olympics? She didn’t tell me that she wants me there,” he furrowed his eyebrows, looking at his puppy-like friend. Jake and Sunghoon shared a glance, and there was a knowing smile in the corner of Sunghoon’s lips when he spoke up.
“Jay, my dear friend, you really don’t know a thing about relationships, do you?”
“It’s not like you have that much experience,” Jay snorted, pointing out the fact that he and Chaerin had only been dating for half a year. To be precise, dating officially because they also had their fake dating period when Sunghoon had tried to keep Chaerin’s douchebag ex away by pretending to be her boyfriend. But he had already had a crush on the cheerleader, so his feelings had been genuine when they had started fake dating.
“Well, it’s still more than your experience which is close to zero,” he shrugged and reached for his bottle of water. Jake found the conversation amusing as he kept smiling while shoving kimchi fried rice into his mouth.
“Well then, enlighten me. Why should I go?” Jay gave up on trying to argue with them because as much as he wanted to deny it, the thought had crossed his mind that maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be too bad if he went to the Olympics to watch your competitions. Then again, you had never asked if he wanted to come or if he was willing to come, so he didn’t bother asking either.
“To support her. I’m pretty sure she’s all nerves, especially because she had a bronze medal in the last Olympics, so she must be feeling a lot of pressure. Not to mention that she and Hanbin are said to be the most promising duo for the team archery.”
“It’s mixed archery,” Jay corrected Jake’s choice of words, and his two friends immediately shared a glance. Oh well, he had really become a bit of an expert in archery, but could they blame him? He was trying not to be too nosy during practices, so he did his own research and watched your previous matches to gain more knowledge regarding your field.
Jay didn’t need to ask how they knew about your rankings because they pulled up your Wikipedia page the moment he told them that you were his fake girlfriend, and besides, he might have been dropping hints here and there. However, he had to give it to them that they were right, and despite the fact that you wouldn’t want to show it, he could see the dark circles under your eyes, and you had even managed to fall asleep once while he had been driving you home after practice. You seemed to lose a bit of your smile too, and he hated that he couldn’t do anything about it, except trying to be extra comforting and supportive.
He didn’t even need to be told twice. After asking Hanbin about your Olympics schedule, he booked himself a hotel and a plane ticket, and arrived the day before your first official match. He didn’t want you to worry about his safety while you were supposed to focus on your performance, so he only told you that he arrived when he got the green light from Hanbin that you finished with your last practice before your first day of competing.
Locks still stuck to your forehead when you rushed out of the stadium after a shower and changing clothes, and you hugged him so tightly upon seeing him that he immediately knew that coming here was the best decision that he had ever made.
“Thank you so much for coming! I can’t believe that you’re here,” you exclaimed giddily, and despite the fact that it was your first hug, somehow it felt so good, so right. You didn’t even seem embarrassed as you kept babbling afterwards about literally everything: the food in the Olympic village, how your room looked and how practise went that day.
He listened to you attentively, his heart a lot lighter that he could see you smile, and because you must have been hungry and tired, he treated you to a meal. You didn’t even want to talk him out of it, and enjoyed dinner with him to the last moment. He didn’t even want to let you go so soon, so he offered to walk you back to your accommodation.
“This morning, I was so nervous that I thought I’m coming down with something. I was also not performing as well during practice as I wanted to, but I feel like I’m a lot lighter now that you’re here. The fact that you carved time out of your day to come here willingly means so much to me,” you admitted coyly as he was walking beside you. He couldn’t go with you all the way because outsiders weren’t allowed in the Olympic village, but you still had some time as it was on the other side of the park you were currently strolling in.
“Even just the fact that you are here means that you’re doing great. I know you might feel the pressure to do better than four years ago, but know that you’re already a winner. You’re already one of the most excellent archers in the whole world,” he mused out loud, and if it wouldn’t have been for the bright lights in your deep dark eyes, he might have wanted to dig a hole for himself because that was quite cheesy. It came from his heart though, and you seemed to appreciate it so much that you were visibly touched.
“Don’t cry…” he shushed you when he noticed you tearing up, and reached out to wipe the first teardrop away that was racing down your cheeks. You looked up at him with those beautiful eyes, and he felt like time stopped around you as you two were standing still in the middle of the walking path, surrounded by the shushing of the trees and the watching eyes of the street lamps. To him, you looked vulnerable yet strong, someone who wasn’t afraid to face her feelings and though the sight of you with tears in your eyes churned his heart, he was also thankful that he could be there for you.
“I’m just… I’m just so happy that you’re here,” you choked up, hidden away emotions surfacing as you let it out. Jay let you cry as much as you wanted, handing you tissues and letting you hug him as long as you wanted. Before, he might have thought that you would be better off without him because you had a lot on your plate already, but now more than ever, he was sure that you needed him just as much as he needed you.
But he didn’t ask the question until you were finished with all of your competitions, until you were finished with all the celebrations for your gold medal in individual female archery and mixed archery alike and 4th in team archery, and until you were leaving behind the country.
Only as the stewardesses signalled that the plane was ready to depart in Seoul, did he dare to ask the question:
“Would you like to go on a date with me? A real one?”
The smile that you gave him was enough of an answer by itself, but when you confirmed that yes, you would be more than thrilled to go, he was the happiest person on Earth. Even if you managed to confuse Hanbin who was sitting on the other side of the aisle (after giving up his seat for Jay) by what you meant by a real date.
But he didn’t have to know that.
