Everyone always cites the same characters as the reason their standards are so high but no one ever cites Rudy Steiner and therefore everyone else is wrong

“Rudy…”
Rudy Steiner x fem!young!reader
Summary: Precious moments with her dear friend and lover, Rudy.
Warnings: Use of German word “Saumensch” (bastard), bombing, babies crying, mention of dying, talk of future, I think that’s all let me know if you find any!!
Note: I just finished the book and I’m mad at the author because he made Rudy die so this is my coping mechanism. :)
I don’t own the character(s) of The Book Thief!
Tumblr media
“Where ya going?”
The girl started, looking over at the blonde-haired boy in front of her. She was holding a bag with a blanket and another with a few pieces of bread.
Rudy was walking beside her, soccer ball under his right arm, scarf tied around his neck as he once in a while nestled his chin into the fabric.
“I’m running away.” She mumbled. Rudy laughed, thinking she was joking.
“Okay,” he played along. “Where to?”
She bit back a grin and put on a face to tell him she wasn’t kidding.
“I’m serious.” She consisted. Rudy shrugged, not even trying to bite back the grin on his purple lips that were discolored from the cold.
“Me too.” He replied, walking by her side the whole way to the river that was iced over, the chill taking home to it.
“Nice out, isn’t it?” Rudy tried to start conversation, squinting his eyes despite it not being so sunny out, but the light reflecting on the snowy surface made it quite blinding to the eye.
She shoved him teasingly, rolling her eyes. “It’s freezing, Rudy.”
He just smiled, looking from her to the snowy hills in the distance. He didn’t look away form the natured view until he heard a soft grunt beside him, and, turning towards his friend, saw her on her bottom with arms stretched to her feet, fiddling with the laces.
“Need help, Saumensch?” Rudy chuckled, kneeing down beside her. She shook her head, continuing to play with the laces of her shoes. She crossed them carefully between her fingers, tying the first knot using the ‘x’ method. She then created a left bunny ear, than picked up the right lace before finishing the knot and double tying it.
“Not bad; I’m still learning.” Rudy said, now lying on his butt too, showing her his foot with a shoe on it. The laces were messily tied together, forming a bunch of string that tried their best not to break loose.
She shrugged and grinned at him through the bright light of white around them before teasing him. “Mine are better looking.”
Rudy scoffed, looking back at her. “Think they’d last to your house?”
She smiled at the challenge. “Bet.” She said, standing up quickly at the same time as he.
“Race ya?” Rudy offered, and she smiled wider, nodding excitedly.
“What will you get out of it?” She asked, standing beside him as they declared that certain spot their starting line. The bags she carried were on her shoulders, but she knew she wouldn’t let them weight her down. She stuffed Rudy’s ball into the bag with the blanket, wanting both their arms to be free to swing as they pleased.
“How ‘bout a kiss?” Rudy asked smugly, grinning. The girl scoffed, looking straight ahead and calculating the way to her house.
“And if I win?” She asked this time, tilting her head at him. He thought for a moment.
“Then you don’t get a kiss.” He ended up replying, bending down in a position to start racing.
“Deal.” She said, bending down beside him. She turned her head to look at the boy before looking ahead, ready to win.
“3…2..-”
The sound of her feet smacking against the shoveled cement interred with Rudy’s countdown, replaced with his shouts of protest of her cheating.
“Wait up, Saumensch!” He yelled behind her, but his voice was faded by the noise if her breathless laughter, legs burning as her house came in sight.
She soon felt him next to her, cheeks flushed and shoulders brushing but not in the kind way; they pushed and shoved each other, trying to get in front.
A big snowy hill was next to her house, built up from the shoveled snow that once as on the streets. She stuck her leg out like a baseball player hitting a home run, him doing the same as they fell into a hump of limbs and snow, full of red cheeks and dried out hands that were slowly turning blue from the winter chill.
They laughed like the little children they were, pulling apart from each other before she lent him a hand once she got up.
“You won.” Rudy said, breathing hard through his discolored lips. She shook her head, just as breathless as him.
“No, it was a draw.” She insisted. Rudy then looked down at her clothes, spotting the snow covered fabric. He gaped softly.
“She’s gonna kill you!” He gasped. The girl grinned, looking down at her clothes as well, shrugging like it didn’t matter. “Who?”

The horrible sound of bombing roared through the air, babies crying around them as they all wanted for it to be over. The girl shivered next to her friend, flinching soft whenever a great vibration filled the room.
“Rudy…” she whispered, looking at his lemon hair in the dark, his usual bright and happy eyes full of fear and anticipation.
He turned to her hesitantly after scanning the room one last time just to make sure everyone was there, like somehow they would disappear if he looked away too quickly.
“What?” He whispered back, eyes searching hers. She reluctantly answered, worried how his reaction would be of her being so honest towards him, not like they haven’t been before.
“I’m scared, Rudy…” she admitted in a hushed voice, flinching again when a bomb shook the earth, heart limping.
She didn’t notice him being startled too. “Me too, me too.” She didn’t bother to tell him that he said it twice, it just made what he said more real. She was looking at him the next time a bomb vibrated the ground, and she then got to notice his head flinch, once was sparkling eyes getting dimmer by the second. She couldn’t help but want the glimmer back in his eyes, so she placed her fingers on the basement floor, right next to his and brushed them hesitantly. His eyes were fogged over with a sad grey color, making her heart stagger. He didn’t look at her, nor look away from whatever he was looking at, but his fingers gripped hers all the same.

The breeze was light, butterfly wings fluttering around them as they showed off their wings, going from flower to flower. The girl watched as one landed on a blossom, skinny black legs standing on the center, wings expanding every couple seconds.
“I miss my dad.” Rudy admitted, eyes squinting from the sun, his bright eyes being sensitive to the light. She couldn’t tell if it was more comfortable to do the same, since her eyes both stung and felt okay when she kept them normal.
“I’m sorry.” She said, looking over at him, and she meant it.
“I don’t even know if he’s alive, or okay…I want to grow up before I die.” He said, now looking at the sky, the clouds waving hi as they flowed past like everything was perfectly fine in Germany.
“And I want to grow up with you, Rudy.” She wished, smiling as he made eye contact with her, his own lips stretching into a soft grin that she dearly loved.
“That sounds nice: you, me, my soccer ball, seems like a nice family to me.” Rudy suggested, and she couldn’t help the soft laugh that escaped her mouth. She looked over at the boy, the boy that had hair the color of lemons, and so wished for grow up with him so he could run as freely as he wished, right across that finish line as she cheered from the sidelines, shouts of encouragement loudest against all the voices. At least, to him anyway.

I have never cried reading a book. I cried reading The Book Thief yesterday.
the weirdest part is, I didn’t cry for the people she lost or the life she could’ve lived. I cried for the people she got to love and the life she could live in the midst of that darkness. I cried for the selfless love only a father like Hans Hubermann could give, for Rosa’a tough but silent love, for the simplicity of Rudy’s companionship, for Max’s pure heart. I think that it is also my favourite part.
I could never find the words to explain how beautiful The Book Thief is, so I’ll say just that. It’s beautiful.

I have my Marvel Family hyperfixation in one hand, and I've got my Book Thief hyperfixation in the other, and I'm about to clap them together like Death did the stories of Liesel and Max.
I just wanna see the skrunklies interact. Like, Billy, Mary, Liesel and Rudy playing football. Freddy and Tommy Muller bonding over being disabled. Max getting a whole horde of new younger siblings that just adore him, and Freddy not having to take care of the other two for once.
