I don’t have any mobile phone network in or around my farm, but I can get some spotty reception if I pace around the woods for a good while. So now when I want to send or receive a text, and it’s too cold or dark to go outside and walk aimlessly for half an hour, I attach my phone to Pandolf’s collar and send him out in the forest. Usually when he comes home after taking my phone for a walk the text is successfully sent. He’s like those rescue mountain dogs with a little barrel of whiskey round their necks, but the millennial version.

The photo above is the closest humanity has ever come to creating Medusa. If you were to look at this, you would die instantly.
The image is of a reactor core lava formation in the basement of the Chernobyl nuclear plant. It’s called the Elephant’s Foot and weighs hundreds of tons, but is only a couple meters across.
Oh, and regarding the Medusa thing, this picture was taken through a mirror around the corner of the hallway. Because the wheeled camera they sent up to take pictures of it was destroyed by the radiation. The Elephant’s Foot is almost as if it is a living creature.

“Basically, I think chastity is a virtue, but I don’t associate it with refraining it from sex, I associate it with refraining it from sex-as-possession.
How to explain this without going back to the creation of the world? Maybe I can’t.
This goes all the way down to the bottom of Platonic Christian metaphysics. Basically, the idea is that originally the world was ‘whole,’ and perfectly unified in God, and that God created by retracting Himself. If God had not retracted Himself, everything would be God. God created the void.
Because of this, to some extent, the inherent nature of being is suffering. God created incompleteness. God created a lack of completion. This is something of a Buddhist idea, yes?
God did this to create love. Love can only exist between two separate beings. And so, the retraction that created evil, also makes the world a perfect and heartbreaking work of romance.
I am like a prisoner, and God resides in the cell adjacent to my own. We cannot see or speak to each other. We communicate by knocking on the wall. The same wall that divides us, also unites us. Love conquers separation and produces unity once again.
The great suffering of human life is that “to look” and “to eat” are two different operations. But, for someone who has completed their Christian training, they should be the same operation. Through beauty, we should feel just as happy to be apart from our love as we are to be united with them.
Anyway, this is all abstract, trying to return to the point…
Lovers want to unite so absolutely that they become one being. But we cannot do that. Humans are separated by a quite physical barrier – physical skin. We cannot merge with each other. Physical intimacy is tragic. The walls of the prison here, like the walls that separate us from God, are the walls of our own skin, the boundaries of our own bodies.
So, we HAVE to have a “chaste” conception of love… and what chastity means is, not abstentation from sex, but a full acceptance of the fact that humans are other than myself and will always be Other. That I CANNOT “possess” or “eat” another human – and also that it would be wrong to do so. To accept that, in a certain sense, all love is unrequited, all love is heartbreaking,
And to love then, regardless.”

One of the most interesting things I’ve noticed about non-natives appropriating our stuff is they never want anything but sage, smudging, and feathers.
Native people will share: our food, our music, our dancing, our art.
But no one is interested in those. They don’t CARE about our food and music. We never see those things in popular culture. Non-natives just want to take our religious items, because they feel entitled to the things people don’t want to share.
